Flying Dog Brewery terminates its Brewers Association membership in defense of free speech – Washington Examiner

Flying Dog Brewery terminated its membership with the Brewers Association over free speech concerns on June 1, marking the first time that a craft beer manufacturer split with the powerful trade group. The move was made in protest of a policy the Brewers Association announced in April aimed at cracking down on "sexually explicit, lewd, or demeaning brand names, language, text, graphics, photos, video, or other images."

Flying Dog, who produces a popular Belgian IPA called Raging Bitch, is no stranger to censorship challenges. In 2009, the Michigan Liquor Control Commission barred the sale of Raging Bitch in the Wolverine State, claiming that the label is "detrimental to the public health, safety, and welfare." Oddly enough, the label was designed by renowned artist Ralph Steadman, who is best known for illustrating many of Hunter S. Thompson's best-known works, including Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

After a long legal battle, Flying Dog won a decisive victory for free speech in May 2016, with the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that the Michigan Liquor Control Commission's ban violated the brewery's First Amendment rights. Flying Dog used the damages it received from the ruling to found the 1st Amendment Society, a nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness about free speech issues. Over the past year, the 1st Amendment Society has held numerous educational events at Flying Dog's headquarters in Frederick, Md.

Thus, Flying Dog's decision to leave the Brewers Association should come as no surprise. Their steadfast defense of free expression is integral not just to its beer labels but to its core values as a company.

Flying Dog CEO Jim Caruso explains in Brewbound:

Free enterprise doesn't exist without freedom of expression If you've suppressed my ability to communicate my marketing message to my potential consumers, you are anti-free enterprise. It's appalling to think that the brewers who sit on the board of directors and the [Brewers Association] management are interfering in the industry, trying suppress free enterprise and suppress craft brewers from communicating their marketing message to their consumers.

These days, free speech is not just under threat by governments. Private institutions like universities and trade groups often embrace censorship, creating a chilling effect where individuals are afraid to share knowledge. While it's perfectly within their rights to impose such rules, their customers should not be afraid to raise their objection or vote with their dollars.

Such is the case case with the Brewers Association's unnecessary decision to regulate its members' brands. Flying Dog should be applauded for standing up for "good beer and no censorship."

Letter: What freedom of speech truly is – The Gazette: Eastern Iowa Breaking News and Headlines

Jul 19, 2017 at 9:58 am | Print View

Tim Bickels July 9 letter Exercise your right to free speech was a completely inaccurate representation of what the freedom of speech truly is.

The impression I got from his letter is that he wanted to be able to say what he wanted whenever he wanted and no one is allowed to respond or be critical of it. Thats not how it works. If you say something that is anti-gay, thats homophobic and you will be told that youre homophobic. If you say something thats discriminatory toward Islam, then yes you are Islamaphobic. Theres a big difference between being critical of something and demonstrating out right hate and bigotry toward it. Being critical of something is dissecting the various points of it and stating why you disagree with it without classifying it in a discriminatory light.

Freedom of speech guarantees you the right to express yourself without interference from the federal government, thats a very basic laymans term definition of it. But that doesnt mean that a person can say something and another person isnt allowed to retort and classify them as what theyre demonstrating when they speak.

My interpretation of what Bickel wanted was to be able to demonstrate discriminatory thinking, but not carry that label along with him. I think he may need to re-examine things.

I wish for people to exercise freedom of speech with the understanding that others will too and if youre discriminatory the First Amendment doesnt protect you from that.

Berkeley free-speech fight flares up again over Ben Shapiro – The … – Washington Post

The University of California at Berkeley is again blocking a conservative speaker from coming to the flagship public campus, an advocacy group claimed, threatening the constitutional rights of students.

But university officials said they welcome Ben Shapiro and are just trying to find a large enough, and safe enough, venue for the conservative columnist to speak to students in September.

We think theres a very strong likelihood we can make this work, university spokesman Dan Mogulof said Wednesday evening.

He said university officials are trying to meet with students to talk about it and that efforts to resolve the situation would be better served by a face-to-face meeting than by a public fight in the media.

Berkeley, long known for its liberal-leaning student body and its role in the Free Speech Movement of the 1960s, has become a cultural battleground, with pitched fights between far-left and far-right activists.

When Milo Yiannopoulos, a writer who calls himself a free-speech fundamentalist and whom critics call a hatemonger, tried to speak on campus in February,University of California police locked down the campus and canceledthe event after 150 or so black bloc anarchists in masks streamed into a large crowd of peaceful student protesters, breaking windows, setting a propane tank ablaze and attacking police with rocks and firecrackers.

That decision was polarizing: Some saw it as the smothering of conservative thought, an assault on the First Amendment. Others saw it as the only rational response to the imminent threat of dangerous riots.

President Trump jumped into the fray with a tweet the morning after: If U.C. Berkeley does not allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view NO FEDERAL FUNDS?

In the months to come, there were violent clashes between far-right and far-left protesters in Berkeley. The Berkeley College Republicans, who had invited Yiannopoulos, asked conservative commentator Ann Coulter to speak on campus, and that sparked another fight, as campus officialscanceled the event over safety concerns.

After pushback, they invited her to speak the following week in a safer venue. The Young Americas Foundation and College Republicans filed a lawsuit against the university, claiming it had violated their right to free speech.

Coulter never gave the speech. Protesters swarmed campus anyway.

[Ben Shapiro plans to speak at UC-Berkeley, where clashes have shut down other conservative speakers]

This summer, Berkeley College Republicans, with the help of the conservative advocacy group Young Americas Foundation, invited Shapiro.

University officials said, when they learned of the invitation, that they welcomed him and would work to find a secure site for the speech.

The university continues its shameful tactic of hiding behind vague security concerns, Naweed Tahmas, external vice president of the UC Berkeley College Republicans, wrote in an email Wednesday night.

Most recently, the university police and the administration cited broad concerns that Ann Coulters speaking engagement would spark violent protests.

Ultimately, after massive police presence the day of Ms. Coulters proposed speaking date, the Anti-Fascists and other left-wing groups did not show. In fact, they released an op-ed stating that they had no intentions or plans to disrupt Ann Coulters speaking engagement at UC Berkeley. After canceling our last three events, UC Berkeley has solidified itself as an ideological echo chamber, as only favored viewpoints may be heard on campus with no meaningful opposition or challenge permitted. This is a disservice to students as it is incumbent upon universities to expose students to a breadth of different ideological views.

The Young Americas Foundation announced: Berkeleys inability to find a lecture hall more than two months in advance is laughable.

Ben Shapiro, in a written statement, said, Using ridiculous pretexts to keep conservatives from speaking is unsurprising but disappointing.

Well find a way to get this event done, and UC Berkeley has a moral and legal obligation to ensure we do so.

Mogulof said there are three venues on campus that are free to student groups and large enough to accommodate the event but that they were already booked for that time, so they have asked the student group if another time or a smaller venue would be acceptable or if they would be willing to pay to rent another space.

He said they were hoping to get a better understanding of their request, not through the media but by sitting down to talk about it.

They support the right to have a wide variety of speakers on campus, and freedom of speech, he said.

We want to have this event. he said.

A Critical Look At A New Sefer: Alternative Medicine in Halachah – Yeshiva World News

(by Ben Rothke)

Learn a few pages in the Mishnah Berurah and youll come to the phrase hamachmir tavo alav bracha. While the Chofetz Chaim didnt coin the phrase, he made it his calling card. He will accept an opinion, but commend those who want to be strict. These stringencies apply throughout Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim, even though most of the topics do not deal with potential capital crimes.

Had the Chofetz Chaim written on Yoreh Deah hilchos Avodah Zara, I think its safe to say the phrase would be pervasive.

In a new book, Alternative Medicine in Halachah, Rabbi Rephoel Szmerla attempts to make the halakhic case for alternative medical treatments. Its a heavy tome; 11 English-language chapters and about 400 pages of Hebrew appendixes.

Yet in close to 200 pages, I was struck by the fact that never once does Szmerla use hamachmir tavo alav bracha. This is noteworthy given that avoda zara is one of the 3 prohibitions one must give up their live rather than violating.

Some of the therapies to which the book details the practical halacha include:

Remote healing Reiki Acupuncture Kinesiology Dowsing Homeopathy and flow essences Gem therapy Geobiology and Feng Shiu Hypnotherapy Yoga Therapeutic touch Shamanic healing

Szmerla is a proponent of these alternative therapies. Hes been involved with so-called energy medicine for twenty years and is something of an evangelist for this cause. For this reason, his devotion to this project, perhaps, the author struggled to provide a cogent rationale for his arguments. He also represents a curious trend among some elements of the Orthodox Right to declaim modern science as wisdom. The sinuous logic often takes some unorthodox and untraditional turns.

A Scientific Halakhist?

The failure centers on the authors attempt to be the medical and halakhic expert. This was not a challenge for some of the twentieth centurys leading halakhic authorities. For example, Rabbi Moshe Feinstein frequently called on the scientific knowledge of his son-in-law Rabbi Moshe Tendler, who had received his Ph.D. in microbiology from Columbia University. In Israel, Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach relied on experts in biology and physics when addressing halakhic issues related to these fields.

But it is troubling in this more recent project. While he quotes extensively from myriad new age sources, Szmerla does not reference any non-alternative scientists or medical doctors. What is more, the books bibliography lists a mere 29 citations, none of which are science-based works. The result is a goodly number of botched scientific proofs and impreciseor wrongterminologies. One example is his equating data and evidence as being the same.

Sometimes, the scholarship just does not back up the claim. For instance, an aura, according to new age thought is an emanation that encloses a human body. However, the myth-buster Joe Nickell writes that tests to observe alleged aura emanations have repeatedly met with failure. Nonetheless, Szmerla writes that it is worthwhile to note that there exists scientific data supporting the existence of the aura.

Rabbinic Authority

Its not just Szmerlas understanding of science that is lacking, his disdain for the halakhic process and understanding of the nature of halakhic development are also quite troubling. His portrayal of the rabbis of the Talmud deserves specific mention. Szmerla portrays rabbis of the Talmud as gullible. He writes that halachic determinations do not require the rigorous evidence of scientific double-blind studies. This is plainly crass, ignoring the fruitful scholarship conducted by Rabbi Nahum Rabinovitch, among others. The rabbis of the Talmud certainly didnt use a chi-squared test or regression and correlation analysis as we know it, they did operate with sophisticated levels of statistical analysis, the best of what was known to them in their time.

To boot, Szmerlas proof for this criticism is rather simplistic. For example, he notes that in the eyes of the Torah, any phenomenon that has been validated three times is considered authentic. He is referring to the Talmud in Shabbat 61a that discusses when amulets are to be approved as medical devices. He takes a discussion limited to amulets and applies it to all medical therapies. In any system, be it legal, mathematical, or theological, one cant take a limited item; and pro forma apply it globally.

Further, Szmerlas methods are precarious from a practical halakhic perspective. He assumes to know exactly what the Talmud is discussing, and can precisely correlate it to a particular new age therapy. Contrast that with the notion that the Talmud states in Shabbat 35a: that we are not experts in identifying medium-sized stars to determine nightfall. If we cant expertly identify the size of the stars in the sky, its hard to understand how he can know the specific new age therapy. Yet, Szmerla does exactly that. For example, the Talmud in Horayot 12a discusses the concept of a babuah di-babuah, a shadow of a shadow. Szmerla writes that this description is identical to the description of the aura given by energy healing practitioners, a therapy he therefore allows.

He also ignores notions of rabbinic consensus and debate. In the foreword, Rabbi Shmuel Meir Katz of Lakewood writes that a hallmark of a genuine moreh horaah is the intellectual honesty to examine an issue from various standpoints and the capability to honestly evaluate dissenting opinions. Yet, one of the most egregious problems with Szmerlas approach is that he does not significantly reference those dissenting opinions. He writes that there is scientific data to support his findings, but much of his data is based on vibrational medicine, to which a 2008 study by noted researcher Edzard Ernst found that the evidence is not fully convincing for most complementary and alternative medicine modalities.

Finally, he writes the efficacy of homeopathy has been well-established. That simply is not true. No large-scale study has found homeopathy any more effective than a placebo. Yet that assertion is what allows him to permit ineffectual therapies, as he believes that any phenomenon that has been validated three times is considered authentic. With enough of a sample size, its easy to get three cases of anything. Science would call that the placebo effect. Szmerla would call that authentic.

An Orthodox Counterculture

Looked at more broadly, this book reflects disturbing trends in some subculture elements of Orthodoxy to disdain modern science and certain medical developments and to engage new age therapies.

Why the opposition? For Szmerla, modern science is not God-focused. He contrasts the opinions of atheistic scientists with those of the creators of alternative therapies, who he feels realize that their healing powers originate from the Divine. Both characterizations are overly generalized, and his simplistic observation does nothing to support his claims. The author does not explain why alternative therapies, which may have their ancient roots in Krishna or Vishnu, may be more acceptable or effective than those from non-believing scientists and doctors such as Linus Pauling or Franois Jacob.

What Hath the New Age Movement Done to Us?

The New Age movement, with its acceptance of occult practices, pantheism, and a spirituality without borders or confining dogmas that is inclusive and pluralistic is anathema to halakhah. Rabbi Szmerlas book, I fear, reflects a trend within some parts of the Orthodox Right to eschew modern science and contemporary medicine.

This comes at a significant cost. The authors weltanschauung leads him to be a promulgator of bad science while misrepresenting Chazal. The danger with Alternative Medicine in Halachah is that the author oversimplifies both halakhah and the often-complex fields of science and medicine. This leads to his acquiescence to therapies that other major poskim outright forbid. Perhaps more disturbing than the poor scholarship in this book, is the underlying trend it illustrates.

Skepticism, Humanism, Atheism, and Right Wing Upbringing – The Good Men Project (blog)

Angelos Sofocleous is a friend and colleague. We write together a decent amount. I asked about an interview for an ebook, where we would discuss his background. I wanted to diversify the content of the e-book, free one, with not only the articles written with friends and colleagues but also interviews with the writers themselves. Here is Angelos.

Scott Douglas Jacobsen:To begin, we have been writing partners. In fact, youve been one of my more prolific writing buddies, activist work, for about a year coming into a year-and-a-half. It is cool because were on almost opposite sides of the globe, but we work on common initiatives relatively consistently. I wanted to diversify some of the content of this volume with some more diverse interviews with people beginning their active careers. Their lives in other words, so here we are after you agreed to be a willing interviewee (victim). What was early childhood to college life like for you? Was there an activist background? How do you find the developments within the EU throughout your lifetime?

Angelos Sofocleous: Thank you for the opportunity, Scott. You are one of the most active, intelligent, and knowledgeable people I know. It is a joy to be able to work with you on a number of projects.

To begin, I have been through many phases of metamorphoses from early childhood to college life. I can think of periods in my life with which I have very little in common with the person I am now. From a very young age though, I always remember myself going through the encyclopedias in my grandmas house, trying to figure out what interests me; from biology to politics, from astronomy to philosophy. Soon, I found out that I was interested in one thing: Knowledge.

Luckily, I was a very introverted and shy child. This gave me the opportunity to be able to spend my time wisely on what regards social interactions while I very carefully allocated my (limited) energy on things that could benefit me. Hence, I spent a lot of time with myself. And I felt totally fine with it. I never get why people consider it weird for someone to stay at home on a Saturday night, or go to the movies by themselves, or pick a book and sit on a parks bench. I was thus involved in activities through which I would spend time having discussions with myself, exploring my mind, and writing down my ideas and thoughts.

Writing, o writing. I started my anonymous personal blog when I was 14, in which I still write 9 years later, although the person who started the blog is different from the one who still writes on it. Words in my mind have no voice, no physical expressions; they can only be expressed through writing, and this is what I did for most of my life. Had it not been for writing, my mind would be a chaotic mess of unstructured and unorganized thoughts, probably expressed in non-conventional ways. And I wouldnt like that. Writing, thus, saved my mind from going crazy. A mind that cannot be expressed, either stops thinking or stops expressing itself. Both can lead to insanity.

The year when I started writing signified a turning point in my life. Growing up in a right-wing religious family, the opportunity arose through my teenage years, to revolt against what I had grown up with, and explore new ideas, while questioning my own, deeply held at that time, beliefs. I no more consider belief to provide an appropriate basis on which to base arguments What is needed is knowledge, and in case of knowledge is not possible (yet), one must suspend belief until there is appropriate and satisfactory evidence for knowledge. This is science.

Apart from some close friends, I was never able to discuss my atheistic and agnostic beliefs, as well as my opposition to religion and my endorsement of science, with my family or even at school. This is how it is growing up on a small island, with less than 1 million population, which claims to have one of the biggest percentages of religious followers in the European Union. My teenage revolution, then, was not verbal and not physical, it was mental.

That being said, my activist background was limited to sharing my ideas, trying to encourage people through my writings and influence them, while I was doing the same with other peoples writings. No action out in the streets, no discussions outside social media, limited involvement in groups. I would not say, then, that I had any activist background when it comes to my teenage life unless you want to call writing a form of activism.

In any case, I drew myself more and more into skepticism, freethinking, and humanism, and tried to educate myself on these issues, waiting for the time when I would apply this knowledge into the world.

This could not be done after high school though, as I had to spend two years doing mandatory military service. I will not waste much space here to talk about it, as its not worth it. I am ashamed of my country that treats its 18-year-olds in such a way, still having remnants of hegemonic masculinity. There is great potential for encouraging young people to develop themselves, and military service is definitely not a way to do this, at least in my country.

Things had changed, however, when I entered university. Having spent two years of physical and mental inactivity, I decided that it was time for me to become active. At the moment, Im the president of two student societies, Durham Humanists, and Cypriot Society of Durham, while Im a Sub-Editor at my universitys newspaper (Palatinate UK), a writer at ConatusNews.com, and a co-editor at Secular Nation magazine.

I have also just published my second poetry collection. I am therefore active in writing again, this time having the opportunity to meet like-minded people and be active in groups, promoting campaigns and influencing students and the general public to a greater extent. I feel that most of the chains that held me back to my teenage years have broken, and I am now able to take action on the issues that concern me.

Now, moving onto your last question regarding the developments within the EU within my lifetime, I witnessed a major shift in Europe, from conservatism to liberalism and progressivism. Mutual respect and recognition of human rights across Europe, of course, need to take place at a personal level, within societies, but also at a national, and even pan-continental level.

This is what I feel the EU has achieved, bringing European countries closer to each other without erasing any aspect of their unique identities but, in contrast, managing to protect, secure, and enrich each nations identity through mutual recognition and respect for each other nations identity.

The Last Atheist Will Get Good Care from A Chinese Christian – Patheos (blog)

If things go as they are going, the last Swedish atheist will get decent care from Christian Chinese nurses.

The good news about global change is that atheism and the religious nones are in decline as a percentage of the global population. Humankind is becoming more brown and religious.

The future could not be brighter. Why?

In China the official atheistic regime has not been able to keep people away from the truth. In this highly educated country, Christianity is booming.

Meanwhile in the North America and Western Europe some oldsters keep reporting on trends inScotland as if the five million Scots matter in the face of 182 million Nigerians. The United States will be smaller than Nigeria in population soon. Isnt it time that our media paid more attention to sub-Saharan Africa and less attention to tiny, shrinking West European countries and their concerns? Of course, some bigots will say they are growing in the civilized world as if China, India, and Kenya were uncivilized but that kind of offensive talk will doubt out.

If the West is to be saved, it will be because new people groups decide Western ideas can be their ideas. We should care about the Indian Supreme Court as much as the US Court to find the future.

This is truly blessed news as the old evils of colonialism, the sick mistakes that tainted the good that European nations did in the world, can finally be laid to rest. Let us see power go to the global South and have those of us who are white and European in background bequiet and listen to the wisdom of most of humankind.

Here is what I hear just now from my global friends:

The world is tired ofus.Everything we do, we broadcast. Western European and secular US culture has become the nearly-senile relative who must trumpet every bowl movement to the entire family. We dont matter nearly as much as we think we do and it is time to sit down, listen, and let the rest of the world teach us what we have failed to learn.

Most of the world thinks we have become deranged on sex. If you are not sex positive, then shame on you is not a message that resonates in the parts of the world still having actual sex that produces babies. While some decadent secularists view babies as a burden, the rest of the world views children as a blessing.

Sanity will win, because sanity knows that the future belongs to those who procreate!

In the West we are presented three tired alternatives: right-wing secularism (individualism!), left-wing secularism (It takes a village!), and strongman rule. Most of the world says no. Normal humans, normals, wantsocial stability, scientific innovation, and liberty with law.

In the West, we have produced no alternative to the bureaucracy of Belgium, the EU state, which would rather regulate a jam than eat one. Normal people look on, from Africa and Asia look and say: No thanks. They come here, they see, and they snicker.

In our futuristic novels too often we have seen Utopia or dystopia in white, Western terms. We have forgotten that if things continue as they are going the last atheist Icelander will get charitable care from the dominant Asian and African monotheistic population.

As the nones fade, as atheism withers away, the important thing is to be gracious in victory, especially white theists. We did some good, but our day is done and what is done cannot ever be undone.

So take good look at the future: religious, African and Asian, and full of jollications.

I cannot wait!

Elon Musk Calls for Moon Base – Space.com

Elon Musk (left) talks to NASA International Space Station (ISS) program manager Kirk Shireman on July 19, 2017, at the ISS Research and Development conference in Washington, D.C.

Elon Musk may be focused primarily on Mars, but he'd also like to see a human outpost on a world much closer to home.

"To really get the public real fired up, I think we've got to have a base on the moon," the billionaire founder and CEO of SpaceX said today (July 19) at the 2017 International Space Station Research and Development (ISSR&D) conference in Washington, D.C.

"Having some permanent presence on another heavenly body, which would be the kind of moon base, and then getting people to Mars and beyond that's the continuance of the dream of Apollo that I think people are really looking for," Musk told NASA ISS program manager Kirk Shireman, who interviewed him onstage at the conference. [Moon Base Visions: How to Build a Lunar Colony (Photos)]

Musk and SpaceX are working to make the latter part of that vision a reality within the next 50 years or so. Last September, at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) meeting in Mexico, the entrepreneur unveiled plans for a reusable rocket-spaceship combo called the Interplanetary Transport System. The ITS would help colonize Mars and, potentially, allow humanity to explore more distant worlds, such as the Jupiter moon Europa and the Saturn satellite Enceladus.

Musk has been relatively quiet about the ITS since then, but he said he plans to give an update about the architecture at the next IAC conference, which will be held this September in Adelaide, Australia. And he teased an ITS tweak that SpaceX has been working on.

Downsizing the ITS spaceship a bit the originally unveiled version would carry at least 100 people and using it for some profit-generating "Earth-orbit activity" could help make Mars colonization economically feasible, Musk said at the ISSR&D conference today.

"That's one of the key elements in the new architecture," Musk said. "It's similar to what was [unveiled] at IAC, but it's a little bit smaller still big. I think this one's got a shot at being real on the economic front. You know, that's the trick."

Musk also said today that another one of his ventures, The Boring Company, could aid in Mars colonization as well. The Boring Company's main goal is to construct tunnel networks beneath (and, eventually, between) traffic-choked cities such as Los Angeles, enabling speedier travel.

But advanced tunneling technology will also be in high demand on Mars, Musk said, citing the likely need to mine large amounts of ice and other natural resources. And Red Planet colonists may want to live underground, at least part of the time, to shield themselves from the relatively high radiation fluxes encountered on the Martian surface, he added.

"You can build a tremendous amount underground with the right boring technology on Mars, so I do think there's some overlap in that technology-development arena," Musk said.

But Earth-optimized tunneling machines won't do the job on Mars, he stressed.

"The Earth ones are really heavy. Like, really heavy," Musk said. "You're not worried about weight for an Earth tunneling machine; actually, you want one that's nice and heavy. But a Mars one, you'd have to redesign it to be superlight that's a tricky one and then just take into account the different conditions on Mars and everything else."

NATO, Russian troops rattle swords along hundreds of miles of borderland – Chicago Tribune

Tens of thousands of troops are on the move from the Baltic to the Black Sea, as NATO and Russia open up a series of massive military exercises the size of which the continent hasn't seen since the Cold War.

Both sides claim the drills, which involve aircraft, warships, tanks and artillery, are purely defensive in nature. But it is clear the exercises are also meant to show off new capabilities and technologies, and display not only the strength of alliances, but how swiftly troops and heavy equipment can move to squash a threat at the frontier.

The most ambitious undertaking on the NATO side is Saber Guardian 17, a series of over a dozen distinct battle drills being carried out by 25,000 troops from 20 countries moving across Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria.

The scenario presented to ground commanders is that a technologically advanced land force has pushed into NATO territory and is threatening the alliance as a whole. The drills include air defense tests, live fire tank engagements, long advances by armored columns, fighter planes and helicopters supporting ground movements, electronic warfare, and airdrops.

"Deterrence is about capability, it's about making sure that any potential adversary knows that we are prepared to do whatever is necessary," U.S. Army Europe commander Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges told reporters during the exercise. "What escalates tensions is when we look weak, not connected, not prepared, that is what invites aggression."

But increasing military capability doesn't have to mean war, he added. "The Russians only respect strength, so if we demonstrate cohesion, if we demonstrate that we are together, that we are prepared, then I think we don't have to worry."

The general's blunt comments underscore the planning for Saber Guardian, which doesn't name Russia as the adversary, but clearly has the Kremlin in mind.

The scenario revolves around an incursion into NATO territory by a militarily advanced enemy intent on seizing the economic assets of Black Sea countries. A battle featuring 5,000 NATO troops at the Cincu training range in Romania saw U.S. Apache and Romanian helicopters coordinate with artillery on the ground, U.S. Abrams tanks, and 650 vehicles in support of a large infantry movement to halt the advance.

The U.S. is planning to spend about $23 million on the sprawling Romanian base in order to conduct even larger, more complex battle drills there in the future.

On the other side of the deterrent fence stands Russia, which is preparing to surge as many as 100,000 troops into the field in a series of drills dubbed Zapad, or "West" in the coming weeks.

The Kremlin claims about 12,700 troops will be active in Belarus and Russia for Zapad. But experts and NATO officials say Moscow is more likely to conduct a series of engagements that will swell those ranks by tens of thousands. Under the Vienna Document agreement of 2011, foreign observers must be present for any exercise that exceeds 13,000 troops.

By coming in under that number while conducting several other large drills at the same time, Moscow can avoid the presence of observers and control the narrative of how its troops performed.

But NATO is wary.

Given that Russia used a massive military exercise in 2014 to obscure its incursion into Crimea, and invaded South Ossetia in Georgia in 2008 during another exercise that covered troop movements, the alliance is keeping a close eye on Zapad.

"From previous experiences related to previous exercises, we have every reason to believe there may be substantially more troops participating than the official quoted numbers," NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said recently when asked about Zapad.

"We don't consider this year's Zapad exercise in itself to be a direct threat to [NATO] or a cover for an attack," added Kristjan Prikk, undersecretary for defense policy at Estonia's Ministry of Defense during a conference in Washington on July 11. "But we have to keep in mind that the Russians have the nasty habit of hiding their actual military endeavors behind exercises."

The last Zapad, in 2014, focused on displaying how quickly Russia could move forces from one part of the country to another, and illustrated how the Kremlin underplays the number of troops involved in its intertwined military drills.

Moscow claimed about 22,000 troops took part in 2014, but outside observers later concluded that up to 70,000 were involved, once all of the smaller but related exercises were added up.

Whatever number of troops ultimately take part, Moscow is "going to very actively signal what they can and cannot do militarily," said Olga Oliker of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. And the fact that Russia often conducts nuclear exercises in conjunction with conventional movements adds an extra element of uncertainty for NATO and the West.

This year, "I'm looking to see what Kaliningrad's role is in the exercise, and what supporting and concurrent exercises are being held in Belarus and Kaliningrad," the Russian exclave on the Baltic Sea, Oliker said.

Three Chinese warships are slated to arrive in Kaliningrad in July 21 to take part in a series of drills with the Russian navy and air force.

The upcoming week's worth of activities will include anti-submarine and anti-ship operations, and practice between the two nations communicating and coordinating while fighting. "The main aims of the exercise are to increase the efficiency in cooperation of the two fleets to counter threats to security at sea, [and] train compatibility of the crews of Russian and Chinese combat ships," the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The naval activity in the Baltic comes months after NATO established new brigades in Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia, beefed up by prepositioned American tanks and heavy armored vehicles.

In June, the U.S. Air Force also sent B-1 and B-52 bombers to Europe to participate in the massive BALTOPs exercise with Baltic allies, which included 50 allied ships running through a series of defensive maneuvers to protect NATO's northern flanks.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Army deployed a Patriot anti-aircraft missile system in Lithuania for use in yet another NATO wargame, marking the first time the system has been brought to the Baltic region where Russia enjoys a robust air and missile defense capability. The deployment is temporary, U.S. officials cautioned, but officials in Lithuania are looking at purchasing the system. Romania recently committed to a $3.9 billion deal for seven Patriot missile defense systems in July.

Closer to Russia's borders and Crimea is another NATO exercise related to Saber Guardian, dubbed Sea Breeze 2017. The 12-day naval exercise currently underway in the Black Sea is co-hosted by the U.S. and Ukraine, and features the U.S. Navy cruiser USS Hue City and the destroyer USS Carney, which join 16 other countries in the Odessa-based undertaking. American surveillance plans and a team of Navy SEALs are also participating.

The naval exercises will be closely watched by Russian forces, who are active in the Black Sea, and have vastly improved their surveillance capabilities in Crimea. Over the past year, Russian aircraft have repeatedly buzzed American warships and aircraft in international waters in the Black Sea, drawing protests from Washington.

In February, an armed Russian aircraft buzzed the USS Porter, and in May armed Russian jets came within feet of U.S. surveillance planes operating over the waterway.

Moscow spooks return to Hungary, raising NATO hackles – POLITICO.eu

Government insists there is no such thing as a special relationship between Russia and Hungary.

NATO allies are worried about expanding Russian intelligence operations in Hungary.

While Western officials have often criticized the government in Budapest for backsliding on democracy, theyve tended to praise it for a steadfast commitment to NATO. But officials from allied countriessay Russia increasingly sees Hungary as an operational backdoor into Europe.

There is tremendous concern that Russia is basically using Hungary as an intel forward operating base in NATO and the EU, said a former official at the U.S. Embassy in Budapest, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Western officials say Russian intelligence agencies have boosted their presence over the past few years in Hungary, which is a member of Europes border-free Schengen zone, to launch a variety of intelligence and sabotage operations in the EU.

Back in 2014-2015 [the Russians] went from maybe 50-100 intelligence officers up to 300 plus in Hungary, said the former embassy official.

Generally we expect they are openly capturing telecoms, running HUMINT [human intelligence] sources all over Europe, planning and staging all kinds of cyber sabotage, linking up with organized crime and supporting folks in parties like [the far-right] Jobbik with fat sacks of cash and maybe even some intel-sourced dirt, this person added.

Located on NATOs eastern edge and bordering Ukraine, Hungary is considered an important component of the alliances eastern defense strategy. Allied troops are currently training in Hungary as part of NATOs 10-day Saber Guardian exercises.

Everyone thinks Hungary is compromised Western NATO employee during part ofOrbns term

With Hungarian troops deployed in Kosovo and Afghanistan and a brigade currently training in Estonia, policymakers in Budapest often make the case that regardless of Prime Minister Viktor Orbns friendliness with the Kremlin, Hungary at its core is a dedicated NATO ally.

Orbn has vowed to boost defense spending, with the goal of it reaching 2 percent of GDP by 2024. All NATO countries have committed to spend 2 percent of GDP on defense, although only five member countries currently do so a matter U.S. President Donald Trump has highlighted in an effort to get European allies to boost their contribution to the organization.

NATO policy is an exception in Hungarian politics, its been consistent, regardless of any governments ideology, said one current Hungarian official, who declined to be identified.

I have never felt like Im not taken seriously by NATO partners, he said, adding that Hungary is quite active in contributing intelligence to alliance members, especially on Ukraine and the Western Balkans.

In the alliances Brussels headquarters, some officials try to highlight the countrys positive efforts. Hungary contributes a lot to the alliance within the constraints of its limited resources, said one NATO official. The country plays a key role in strengthening NATOs defense in the eastern part of the alliance, he added.

But among some of their partners, the Hungarian government and security apparatus are regarded as untrustworthy.

Everyone thinks Hungary is compromised, said one Westerner who worked for NATO during part of the Orbn years. I was told not to share anything classified with Hungarians, even if they had the appropriate clearance, this person said.

The Hungarian government, in response to questions from POLITICO, denied that there are any concerns about Russian operations in Hungary.

There is no such thing as a special relationship between Russia and Hungary, a spokesman for the government wrote, adding that the Hungarian intelligence services fulfill of all their duties regardless of the nature or origin of any given issue.

Since coming to office in 2010, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbn has reached out to Moscow, meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin frequently and sealing a deal for a 10 billion Russian loan for the Paks II nuclear power plant project.

In late 2016, Hungarian online news portal Index reported that a far-right paramilitary leader, who was accused of shooting a police officer, had for years been meeting with Russian intelligence personnel on Hungarian territory. Members of the GRU, Russias military intelligence, have developed relationships with several far-right Hungarian groups, according to the Index report. Some Russian diplomats, moreover, participated in airsofta sport that uses non-lethal equipment resembling guns with far-right activists while Hungarian intelligence services turned a blind eye, the report said.

Suspected Russian intelligence operations have also impacted Hungarians directly. In April, online news portal 444.hu reported that the governments national consultation website where Hungarians were asked to answer a series of questions on their personal views used a tracking code belonging to Russian firm Yandex, which forwarded Hungarians data to a server in Russia. Hungarys National Data Protection Agency, under pressure from critics who say Yandex is bound by Russian law to share information with Russian security services if asked, later announced it would investigate any potential mishandling of Hungarians personal data, which the government had originally assured users would not be shared with foreign third parties.

Some Hungarians, meanwhile, see Western critics as simply hypocritical.

Some Hungarian intelligence professionals are concerned that the Orbn government is leaving Hungary vulnerable to Russian operations.

If we just look at the past six months, we see obvious Russian activities that cannot be explained in a normal NATO or EU member state, Ferenc Katrein, a former director of counterespionage and counterterrorism operations at Hungarys civilian counterintelligence agency, told POLITICO.

He pointed to cases like the national consultation websites forwarding of Hungarians personal information to a Russian server and the recent intimidation of an opposition activist in Budapest by a Chechen who, according to some Hungarian media reports, threatened the activist with the encouragement of a Russian diplomat.

The frequent appearance of stories from Russian state media in Hungarian state-owned outletsand media close to the ruling party has also raised questions about the relationship between Budapest and Moscow.

While the official Hungarian media is constantly attacking the allies, there is no criticism of the Russians This contradiction is telling, said Katrein.

Bilateral military-to-military information-sharing with Western allies almost evaporated after Orbn was elected in 2010, said Gyz Zakaris, a retired Hungarian army colonel who has studied the challenges facing Hungarys armed forces.

Some Western officials say the Orbn government is allowing Russian activity to go unchecked for political reasons.

The Hungarians are tracking [Russian activity] and arent exactly thrilled either, but our read was that Hungarian officials dont believe they can kick them all out without provoking Russia, said the former U.S. Embassy official.

Some Hungarians, meanwhile, see Western critics as simply hypocritical.

What we think, we say, and thats unusual in international politics, said the Hungarian official, adding that many NATO members are in constant communication with the Kremlin but are simply not as open about their ties.

I dont think anyone doubts for a moment that its in Hungarys interest to be part of NATO, said Eleni Kounalakis, who served as the U.S. ambassador to Hungary between 2010 and 2013.

Orbn doesnt want Russian influence in Hungary, she said. The prime minister sees his role as navigating among surrounding powers and protecting Hungarys interests.

NATO Is Staging War Rehearsals for the Ultimate Nightmare: A Russian Invasion – The National Interest Online (blog)

President Trumps assertion that NATO countries are not carrying their fair share of the security burden rings hollow across military bases in Eastern Europe this month, where 45,000 troops from the United States and 23 other countries are staging war rehearsals for a Russian invasion.

Eighteen exercises are underway this summer in the Black Sea region, an area that has grown especially nervous about Russias aggressive posture.

U.S. military leaders do not expect an imminent invasion, but they understand why countries along the Russian border are jittery. These exercises should help them prepare to fight back if and when Russia threatens them, said Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, commander of U.S. Army Europe.

I dont think thats likely to happen, but it has happened, Hodges said. And certainly anyone who lives close to that area, from Finland and Sweden all the way down to Romania, believes it is possible.

Hodges spoke Tuesday from Bezmer Air Base, Bulgaria, in a live webcast hosted by the Association of the U.S. Army.

In the largest of the 18 exercises, dubbed Saber Guardian, 14,000 U.S. soldiers are participating. Other troops came from Armenia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Germany, Croatia, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Macedonia, Republic of Moldova, Montenegro, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.

The naval piece of the combat rehearsal is called Sea Breeze, co-hosted this year by the United States and Ukraine. Air, land, sea, and amphibious forces from 17 nations will simulate maritime interdiction operations, air defense, anti-submarine warfare, damage control tactics, search and rescue, and amphibious warfare.

Patriot anti-missile batteries were deployed in Lithuania for the Tobruk Legacy exercise, which focuses on long-range anti-aircraft and missile defense.

Hodges said these drills should not be viewed as provocative acts but as deterrence.

We want to be ready, he said. We are practicing how we would mass power and assemble multinational teams quickly so our political leaders have some options.

A sense of urgency is especially acute among the three Saber Guardian host nations: Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania. They are all in on this thing, said Hodges. These countries are completely committed. The public there has welcomed U.S. soldiers, he added. Ive been very pleased with that.

U.S. allies are fretting over Russias upcoming military exercise, called Zapad. About 3,000 Russian troops and 800 tanks will be in Belarus later this year to rehearse and train for a potential confrontation with NATO. There is anxiety about the Russian exercise, said Hodges. This will be the first Zapad since Russians annexation of Crimea in 2014.

The incursion into Crimea was the event that forced NATO to rethink its security posture. Russian aggression in the 21st century has pushed warfare into unfamiliar territory, Army officers Amos Fox and Andrew Rossow wrote in a recent Institute of Land Warfare white paper.

In conflicts in Chechnya, Georgia and Ukraine over the past decade, Russia has perfected hybrid warfare tactics, they noted. It is a whole of government approach that includes covert action, manipulation of public opinion and cyberwarfare.

The exercises in Eastern Europe are important for the U.S. Army as well, said Deputy Commander of U.S. Army Europe Maj. Gen. Timothy McGuire.

What do we do in a crisis? he said via webcast from Bulgaria. The U.S. military for a long time has not trained for the type of war that it would have to fight against a sophisticated enemy like Russia. We have to bring back that toughness, McGuire said. We are trying to get back to being agile, he said. The days of going to a FOB [forward operating base] with three meals a day provided by [military contractor] KBR are over.

One of the challenges is logistics, he said. Youve heard the saying: Tactics are for amateurs, logistics are for professionals. The U.S. Army has three combat brigades based in Germany, so moving troops and supplies to Eastern Europe would require careful planning. We have to get diplomatic clearances from nations, said McGuire. Weve had friction at the borders; the coordination is not as solid as it should be. Even routine checkpoints can hold up supply convoys.

In the United States, meanwhile, the debate continues over how much of the Army should be permanently based in Europe.

The presence there was downsized dramatically after the Obama administration in 2012 adopted a pivot to Asia strategy that deemphasized Europe. Two armored brigades in Europe were eliminated. Two brigades a Stryker and an airborne infantry remained.

Priorities had to be reevaluated in the wake of Crimea. An armored brigade and a combat aviation brigade now rotate there for nine-month tours. A study by the Army War College suggested the Army should consider stationing a brigade in Poland.

Most U.S. military leaders have pointed to Russia as their top national security concern. Trump administration officials have not said much on the issue, which is not surprising, as the White House remains embroiled in scandals related to Russians meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Trumps nominee for principal deputy undersecretary of defense for policy, David Trachtenberg, explained his thinking on Russia last week during his confirmation hearing in front of the Senate Armed Services Committee. We face no shortage of challenges. Russia has invaded a neighbor whose territorial integrity it pledged to respect, violated its arms treaty commitments, and threaten NATO allies with nuclear attack.

SitRep: Trump’s Secret Putin Meeting; Pentagon Gets New No. 2; NATO, Russia Square Off in War Games – Foreign Policy (blog)

With Adam Rawnsley

Trump, Putin, alone: The White House failed to disclose a second, hour-long private meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G-20 summit in Germany earlier this month. And the most remarkable bit? The only other person involved was Putins Russian translator, a Russian government employee. No other American official was present.

The dinner with leaders from G-20 countries was on the presidents public schedule, and press was not allowed inside. The presidents decision to leave his seat and engage the Russian leader was not planned (we think), and White House officials did not mention it until forced to on Tuesday.

And remember this bit, from the NYT: The evening after his two meetings with Mr. Putin the first lasting 135 minutes and the second an hour Mr. Trump returned to Washington. On the Air Force One flight back, his top advisers helped draft a statement about a meeting his son Donald Trump Jr. attended last year with a Kremlin-connected lawyer who promised damaging information about Hillary Clinton.

North Korea can hit the U.S. Maybe. The Pentagons second highest-ranking military officer, Gen. Paul Selva, told Congress Tuesday that North Korea cant yet hit the United States with any degree of accuracy. The Norths missiles have the range, but not the ability to hit a specific target, he said. What the experts tell me is that the North Koreans have yet to demonstrate the capacity to do the guidance and control that would be required, Selva added.

NATO, Russia, China drill. Tens of thousands of troops are on the move from the Baltic to the Black Sea this month, as NATO and Russia open up a series of massive military exercises the size of which the continent hasnt seen since the Cold War. FPs Paul Mcleary writes that while both sides claim the drills, which involve aircraft, warships, tanks and artillery and Chinese warships in the Baltic are purely defensive in nature. But it is clear the exercises are also meant to show off new capabilities and technologies, and display not only the strength of alliances, but how swiftly troops and heavy equipment can move to squash a threat at the frontier.

Pentagon Gets new No. 2. The Senate on Tuesday confirmed President Trumps pick for the Pentagons second-highest ranking civilian official. The 92-7 vote confirmed former Boeing exec Patrick Shanahan to be the next Deputy Defense Secretary, the person who runs the day-to-day operations of the Defense Department. Hell replace Bob Work, who has held the job since the Obama administration and was asked to stay on while Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and the White House struggled to agree on a replacement.

Four more coming. A group of White House nominees for other top Pentagon positions had an easy go of it Tuesday before the Senate Armed Services Committee and look to be a lock for confirmation: John Gibson, nominee for deputy chief management officer; Ellen Lord, tabbed to be undersecretary for acquisition, technology, and logistics; Lucian Niemeyer, pending assistant secretary for energy, installations, and environment; and Matthew Donovan, picked for Air Force undersecretary.

Payday. The U.S. government is paying Donald Trump $130,000 a month to lease space in Trump Tower, despite the fact that Trump hasnt spent a night in New York since January. More from the Wall Street Journal: The militarys lease in Trump Tower puts the space far above market rate for similarly sized apartments in the luxury high rise market and makes it one of the most expensive residential rentals in Manhattan.

Kurds make their case. Iraqi Kurds are mounting a campaign in Washington this week to rally U.S. government support for an independence bid before a referendum in September. But Baghdad opposes talk of secession, and with the United States committed to a one-Iraq policy, its going to be an uphill fight, FPs Bethany Allen-Ebrahimian reports

Ambassador. The Trump administration is nominating Jon Huntsman, former Utah Governor and Obama administration ambassador to China, to be U.S. ambassador to Russia.

Theres always one. Jon Huntsman called to see me. I said no, he gave away our country to China! @JonHuntsman. Donald Trump in 2012, tweeting his disdain for Huntsmans service as ambassador to China.

Mass graves. Transnational Justice Working Group, a human rights NGO, released a new report pinpointing the location 40 mass graves in North Korea based on satellite imagery and defector interviews. North Korean civilians and former officials interviewed for the report said they had witnessed public executions at over 300 different sites.

Defections. North Korean defector Jeon Hye-sung has done what few North Koreans have done before gone back to the North after living in the South. Jeon appeared in a recent North Korean propaganda video, bemoaning life in the South. But intelligence officials in South Korea believe that Jeon, who had a high profile career in television, may have been kidnapped by North Korean agents while working to help family members still in the North make it across the border into China.

Summer getaways. Forgotten to book your summer vacation yet? Theres no need to worry as North Koreas National Tourism Administration has a new website up offering you all the information you need to take the spouse and kids for an unforgettable trip to the workers paradise north of the 38th parallel.

Negative content. China is unhappy with the latest version of the National Defense Authorization Act because of provisions calling for joint exercises and training with Taiwanese forces and the U.S. military.

Malorossiya. Novorossiya, the self-declared New Russia proclaimed by Russia and the rebels it backs in Ukraine, is gone, replaced by the rebranded breakaway Ukrainian statelet name Malorossiya or Little Russia. The head of the Donetsk Peoples Republic, Alexander Zakharchenko, proclaimed the new country this week, although Russia and Malorossiyas rebel enclave cousins in the Luhansk Peoples Republic, have been notably cool to the declaration.

Game of Thrones. The New York Times has the inside scoop on how Mohammed bin Salman managed to elbow former heir to the throne Mohammed bin Nayef out of the line of succession. Mohammed bin Nayef, told that King Salman wanted to see him, was summoned to a palace in Mecca where princes stripped him of his phone and told him to give up his government post and claim to the throne while other Saudi officials spread rumors that he was addicted to pain pills prescribed to him after being wounded by an al-Qaeda suicide bomber.

Yemen. A Saudi airstrike killed 20 civilians in the village of al-Atera in Taiz province with some of the victims including women and children.

Sanctions. The Trump administration has applied new sanctions to Iran, targeting industries and individuals that support the countrys Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The sanctions come as a kind of consolation prize for the administration, which has certified Iranian compliance with the nuclear deal signed by the Obama administration but is nonetheless unhappy with the agreement.

Think tanked. The American Enterprise Institutes Katherine Zimmerman has a new report out, The Salafi-Jihadi Movement, arguing that the U.S. is losing the war on terror, defining its enemy too narrowly and prioritizing military action against terrorist groups to the exclusion of addressing political grievances fueling their support in Sunni communities.

EU failed, NATO in the limelight – Daily Sabah

More than 6 million people in Turkey spent the last weekend in the streets commemorating the failed coup attempt of July 15, 2016.

The reason why the people's reflexes are still alive after all this time is that they believe that the danger is not yet over.

Now, the whole world knows what that belief is. Turkish people think what happened on that night was not an ordinary coup like the previous ones in the country and that the purpose was to make the country vulnerable to invasion.

As opposed to what some Western politicians and strategists think, the only factor in the proliferation of this conviction is not the political atmosphere in Turkey.

The West itself has the lion's share in the emotional break of Turkish people from the West.

This is because Turks personally witnessed that the West and its institutions did not even formally side with them on that night.

Feeling alone in the face of the silence of Western institutions such as the EU, NATO and the U.N. on the night of the coup attempt, the people joined hands. They clamped together even more tightly as a result of the fact that soldiers deemed responsible for the coup escaped to U.S. bases or took shelter in EU countries such as Greece and Germany.

Moreover, there were examples in front of them such as the embarrassing design of the West, which pretends to be the knight of democracy, in Egypt and Syria.

Obviously, this course of things has brought Turkey, which has been in the Western bloc for a century since the founding of the modern Republic, to a crossroads. However, the path that Ankara points to and moves toward is poised not only to influence its EU accession talks, but also its relations with institutions like NATO, which has high symbolic value.

For instance, the fact that Turkey, a member of NATO since 1952, is purchasing S400 air defense systems from Russia, the de facto enemy of the organization, is an issue that must be emphasized.

News from Ankara and Moscow reveal that the parties even discussed concrete figures regarding the rocket batteries and their cost.

There is no problem with NATO. In other words, Turkey's NATO membership does not prevent it from pursuing a multifaceted policy, including procurement. Experts argue that this diversity in defense will not create a contradiction for Turkey's close relations and interests in other regions.

Obviously, however, such a de facto situation will make NATO, the most iconic institution of the Western bloc against Russia, rather than its function, lose credibility.

Brussels is aware that it will not be able to make up for Turkey, its strategic border ally, with the new member countries it has in Eastern Europe or with alternatives in the chaotic Arab world.

I think that NATO's condemnation of the July 15 coup attempt, even though delayed by a year, and its rejection of Germany, which demands pressure on Turkey because of the base visit crisis, are signs of this awareness.

However, almost all of the Turkish electorate now wants more solid assurances from the West and its institutions. Hence, NATO should not adopt a rigid attitude like the EU and must increase its gestures in its dialogue with Ankara, which indexes its presence to the electorate's reflexes.

NATO should do this before Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has looked at an ally like Turkey with great aspiration for years, comes much closer to Turkey.

Former National Security Adviser Susan Rice

In the waning days of the Obama administration, bureaucrats ensconced in their posh Washington offices were resting in the prospect ofa Hillary Clinton victory that would protectObamas legacy and their positions.

But then-National Security Adviser Susan Rice may have had some doubts. Or maybe she was just curious. Or maybe there was another motive. Regardless, she unmasked a number of Trump campaign individuals who were caught up in various federal surveillance tactics.

That means they were recorded talking on the phone or meeting with someone who was under surveillance by the Obama administration.

Normally, the identity of American citizens in such situations is withheld.

But not so in this case. In fact, Rice gave the identifications to the National Security Council, the Defense Department, the Director of National intelligence Office and the CIA, according to media reports citing illegal leaks.

Its been part of the flood of leaks of secret or protected information bythe Obama-leaning Washington bureaucracy, dubbed by some as the deep state, apparently in an effort to undermine the agenda of the president chosenby American voters.

Now theres an organization that thinks the people should know what went on who did the surveillance, who unmasked the names of American citizensand who spread the names around Washington.

What to todays top authors have to say about Washington? Find out at the WND Superstore in Socialism: A Clear and Present Danger, Throw Them All Out, Inside the Beltway, Capitol Punishment and many more.

The American Center for Law and Justice has sued the National Security Agency for refusing to respond to itsquestions submitted under the Freedom of Information Act.

ACLJsaid the lawsuit seeks to enforce its demandsfor government records that will shed light on the Susan Rice unmasking scandal that rocked the intelligence community.

The questions were submitted under FOIA, but the NSA has refused to follow the law.

Fox News explained the big picture: Susan Rice, former national security adviser under then-President Barack Obama, requested to unmask the names of Trump transition officials caught up in surveillance. The unmasked names, of people associated with Donald Trump, were then sent to all those at the National Security Council, some at the Defense Department, then-Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and then-CIA Director John Brennan essentially, the officials at the top, including former Rice deputy Ben Rhodes.

TheACLJ said the only way we even know about the Obama administrations apparent politically motivated unmasking is because this raw intelligence information classified national security secrets was illegally leaked to the media.

Its formal request asked for records pertaining to any and all requests former National Security Adviser Susan Rice made to National Security Agency officials or personnel regarding the unmasking of the names and/or any other personal identifying information of then candidate and/or President-elect Donald J. Trump, his family, staff, transition team members, and/or advisers who were incidentally caught up in U.S. electronic surveillance.

The request was acknowledged by the NSA and even granted expedited processing status.

But the answers never came.

So we filed a critical lawsuit and we will force the NSA to answer to a federal court for its blatant disregard for the law, ACLJ announced.

It is seeking an order to release any and all non-exempt records.

This is not our first time weve taken the NSA to federal court, ACLJ explained. We filed a lawsuit earlier this year to force the NSA to produce government records that could expose the people and purposes behind the Obama administrations eleventh hour rule change that dramatically expanded access to raw signal intelligence signed by the Obama administration officials on their way out the door.

It was these changes that have [led] to an unprecedented avalanche of dangerous national security leaks, the group explained.

The deep state shadow government bureaucracy must not be allowed to endanger the national security of the American people as it carries out a vicious vendetta against the current administration.

The lawsuit states, Plaintiff is being irreparably harmed by reason of defendants unlawful withholding of requested records, and plaintiff will continue to be irreparably harmed unless defendant is compelled to conform their conduct to the requirements of the law.

WND reported only weeks ago that some of the key documentation may be under lock and key now and kept their for five years at the former presidents library.

It was another watchdog on government, Judicial Watch, that said its National Security Council denied Freedom of Information Act requests for documents related to Rices alleged unmasking of the identities of any U.S. citizens associated with the Trump presidential campaign or transition team.

The NSC said the documents have been transferred to the Barack Obama Presidential Library, while pointedly adding you should be aware that under the Presidential Records Act, presidential records remain closed to the public for five years after an administration has left office.

It was unclear what was in the statement and what that would mean for the members of Congress who are investigating, the FBI, or even special counsel Robert Mueller.

The Wall Street Journal reportedthe House Intelligence Committee issued seven subpoenas recently, a sign that its investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election is ramping up in scope and intensity.

Three of the subpoenas specifically addressed how and why the names of associates of President Donald Trump were unredacted and distributed within classified reports by Obama administration officials during the transition between administrations.

Back in April, WND reported Rice, speaking to MSNBC, did not deny unmasking the names of Trump associates.

She implicitly acknowledged and explicitly defended unmasking: It was not uncommon. It was necessary at times to make those requests.

But weeks earlier, speaking to PBS, Rice denied any knowledge of such unmasking after it was revealed by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif.

She told PBS, I know nothing about this and, I was surprised to see reports from Chairman Nunes on that count today.

Security Researcher Publishes NSA Exploit Capable of Affecting Newer Windows Versions – The Merkle

Recent NSA exploits were partially responsible for multiple major ransomware outbreaks. In most cases, these NSA exploits could only be leveraged against older versions of the Windows operating system. It now appears that a security researcher has successfully made the ETERNALSYNERGY exploit applicable to newer versions of the popular OS. If researchers canmake this happen, criminals couldcertainly do so as well.

The NSA has built many different exploits to take advantage of weakened protocol found in the Windows operating system. In most cases, these exploits relate to the SMB protocol, which can be exposed to external connections. Ever since the Shadow Brokers unveiled these exploits to the public, we have seen multiple global ransomware campaigns leveraging them. WannaCry is just one of those examples.

ETERNALSYNERGY is one of the NSA exploits exposed by The Shadow Brokers several months ago. At the time of this reveal, thisexploit would only work on older versions of the Windows operating system. All versions up to and including Windows 8 were prone to this SMB exploit. Most security-aware computer users have switched to newer versions of the operating system, but there are plenty of vulnerable machines running older Windows versions right now.

Microsoft has always claimed that the technique used by ETERNALSYNERGY would not work with newer versions of Windows due to several security improvements found in the Windows kernel. Unfortunately, that does not appear to be the case any longer. Worawit Wang, a Thai security researcher, has successfully ported the exploit to newer versions ofWindows. Theported version targets the exact same vulnerabilityusing a different technique.

The new ETERNALSYNERGY exploit will not crash a Windows system. This exploit affects a long list of Windows versions, including Windows 8.1, Windows 2016, and many others. Users of Windows 10remain safe from harm for the time being, but that could change.

About75% of all Windows PCs in the world are now vulnerable to this new attack. These vulnerable computers are actually susceptible to three different exploits, including the original ETERNALSYNERGY and ETERNALROMANCE. Some form of solution needs to be found before more damage is done. Protecting ones computer should be onestop priority, and upgrading to Windows 10 seems to be the best course of action.

Wang also made his own exploit public, which couldhave some interesting consequences. There is also a step-by-step guide on how people can leverage this exploit against vulnerable computers. Any user not implementing the MS17-010 security update soon will remain vulnerable to these attacks. It will be interesting to see if more NSA exploits will be ported to Windows 10 in the future.

Columbus State University Partners With Local School System on NSA Grant for Middle School Cybersecurity Education – Newswise (press release)

Newswise COLUMBUS, GA --- In what may be a first for Georgia, Columbus State University is partnering with the Muscogee County School District on a National Security Agency (NSA) grant to develop and implement a course in cybersecurity education specifically designed for middle school students.

The $50,000 NSA grant allows Columbus State University's TSYS School of Computer Science and its developing TSYS Center for Cybersecurity to work with Rothschild Middle School Leadership Academy to develop and implement a course in cybersecurity education specifically designed for 7th and 8th grade middle school students.

We do not think that a cybersecurity curriculum of this magnitude has been attempted at the middle school level in Georgia, said Tom Hackett, chair of the university's Department of Counseling, Foundations, and Leadership and executive director P-12/University Partnerships. This STEM project is expected to raise interest in cybersecurity and will encourage students to continue learning about cybersecurity, a field very much in-demand by todays workforce.

The course will be structured on the National Security Agency (NSA) Cybersecurity First Principles but will be broken down into age-specific topics understandable by 7th- and 8th-grade students, Hackett said. The NSA Cybersecurity First principles include: domain separation, process isolation, resource encapsulation, least privilege, modularity, layering, abstraction, data hiding, simplicity and minimization.

He said the course will facilitate a learner-centered classroom with numerous hands-on exercises that provide opportunities for middle school students to apply their newly gained knowledge of cybersecurity education.

This program is just one example of what will be many developing partnerships between the Muscogee County School District (MCSD) and Columbus State University. Hackett, Columbus State University (CSU) President Chris Markwood and MCSD Superintendent David Lewis are working on more ways to develop programs and education goals to benefit P-12 students, university students and the local businesses that will be hiring these graduates.

We are proud of this unique partnership with CSU and excited for the opportunities it will afford our students as they begin exploration in this high-demand field, said David F. Lewis, superintendentof the Muscogee County School District.

About 140 7th and 8th grade students at Rothschild Middle School will have the appropriate prerequisite to take the year-long elective course on cybersecurity education during the 2017-2018 school year.

Whether you are 6 or 60 years old, cybersecurity is important to us all, said Wayne Summers, professor and Distinguished Chairperson of CSUs TSYS School of Computer Science. Byteaching the elements of cybersecurity in middle school, we will encourage safe computing practice as well as expand the pool of candidates for future cybersecurity professionals. Based on a comprehensive study supported by the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education, there are nearly 13,000cybersecurity job openings in Georgia and nearly 350,000 openings nationally.

The TSYS School of Computer Science, its TSYS Center for Cybersecurity and Muscogee County School District will ensure the cybersecurity education course will provide age-appropriate and performance based cybersecurity education in a safe environment for middle school students and will meet Georgia curriculum standards.

Hackett said the course curriculum will be available for download on the projects website and the course can be replicated in other middle schools across the nation.

The Rothschild teacher developing this falls course to be called Business Principles & Computer Science is enrolled at CSU this summer in the Information Security course in the TSYS School of Computer Science, which is designated by NSA as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education. Additionally, CSU is part of aconsortium of seven University System of Georgia (USG) institutions to develop the USGs capabilities in IT and cyber security as well as significantly increase the number of IT and cyber security industry qualified graduates coming from USG institutions.

Kushner to testify before Senate intel panel Monday – Bangor Daily News

President Donald Trumps senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner will speak to the Senate Intelligence Committee in a closed-door session Monday as part of the panels widening probe into alleged ties between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

The meeting was confirmed by Kushners attorney, Abbe Lowell, who said that his client is prepared to voluntarily cooperate and provide whatever information he has on the investigations to Congress and appreciates the opportunity to assist in putting this matter to rest.

Kushner is expected to answer the committees questions and not invoke his Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination, according to a person familiar with Kushners thinking.

The interview comes as the Senate Judiciary Committee also announced its intention to schedule former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and Trumps son Donald Trump Jr. to testify before that panel in open session next Wednesday.

Trump Jr.s attorney, Alan Futerfas, did not respond Wednesday evening to requests for comment about the Judiciary Committee hearing.

A lawyer for Manafort said that he and his legal team are reviewing the request and have not made a decision on which committee Manafort will speak with first.

The Judiciary Committee also asked Manafort and Trump Jr., as well as the Trump Organization and the Trump campaign, to preserve all relevant documents related to Russian interference in the 2016 election and to furnish the committee by Aug. 2 with documents related to the June 2016 meeting with Russians purported to have ties to the Kremlin.

Committee Chairman Charles E. Grassley, R-Iowa, and ranking Democrat Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., added that they expect Manafort and Trump Jr. will comply voluntarily with invitations to testify. They added that they have agreed to issue subpoenas, if necessary for the two men.

Kushner, Manafort and Trump Jr. are expected to be asked about a number of reported contacts they and others had with Russians during the campaign and transition period. In particular, they are expected to be grilled about their participation in a June 2016 meeting in Trump Tower with a Russian lawyer that Trump Jr. was told had Kremlin connections and could provide damaging information on presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Four other individuals were also present at the meeting.

Its safe to say that the committees going to reach out to everybody we feel has some contribution to make, Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr, R-N.C., said Wednesday. The Don Jr. meeting as of today has potentially eight individuals. All eight of those individuals will be important to us once we know the types of questions that we need answers to.

Carol Leonnig and Tom Hamburger contributed to this report.

Reidsville police sergeant fired after material in search warrant appeared to be ‘reckless, without basis, misleading’ – WXII The Triad

Reidsville police sergeant fired after material in search warrant appeared to be 'reckless, without basis, misleading'

Sergeant Lynwood Hampshire, of the Reidsville Police Department, was terminated July 14. His termination comes after wrong-doing, while executing a search warrant, was documented in a court memorandum opinion and order. Hampshire was also accused of being part of a Fourth Amendment violation.

RPD Major Ronnie Ellison confirmed the news to WXII 12 News Wednesday. Ellison says Hampshire was employed with the department since December 6, 2004, but had been involved with law enforcement for 17 years.

His ending salary was $46,574.96.

Ellison says Hampshire was terminated for violation of department policy and general order: operational duties and responsibilities.

"Members shall establish and maintain sufficient competency to effectively perform their duties and carry out their responsibilities of their position. They shall perform their duties in such a manner as to effectively and efficiently carry out the functions and objectives of the department," said Chief of Police Robert Hassell.

Hampshire was initially placed on administrative leave. That action came after issues were listed in a search warrant involving former Greensboro police officer William White. White faces possession of stolen property charges after police say he was one of four people who stole $44,000 in lawn mowers in March.

Court documents state that on March 5, Hampshire applied for a warrant to search White's property at 7102 Destiny Jo Road in Pleasant Garden, North Carolina. The warrant was issued by a state court judge the same day.

"When asked by the court at the hearing why he waited until March to secure the search warrant from which this case arises, Sgt. Hampshire stated: 'Guilford County didn't want to deal with it. My district attorney (Rockingham County) didn't want it, and eventually, Alamance County took it over. I couldn't find a district attorney that was willing to prosecute it," court documents state.

According to the court memo, the state warrant sought evidence of the following crimes:

"The day following the issuance of the warrant, officers went to White's home to conduct the search. Special Agent Cummings, a 15-year veteran of the SBI, testified he was present at the search and his duties that day were to document the crime scene in photographs, sketches and in words to include in a report later. Cummings was directed to the master bedroom, where Detective Ken Mitchell was already searching. When he walked into the bedroom, Cummings observed several firearms and other items that Mitchell had found in different locations and spread onto the bed. Cummings observed two rifles that contained a collapsible stock, with one of the rifles having a longer barrel than the other. Cummings seized the rifles and suppressors after viewing them. The day after the search, law enforcement checked the national firearms registry and learned that White had not registered the rifle and silencers," court documents state.

White would later challenge the validity of the search warrant, contending:

White also contends that "even if the warrants were valid, seizure of the rifle and suppressors were not authorized because the registration status of these items was not something immediately apparent to law enforcement under the plain-view doctrine," court documents state.

THE SEARCH WARRANT

The Fourth Amendment requires that warrants be based upon probable cause supported by oath and contain a particular description of the place to be search and things to be seized. White contested whether those elements have been satisfied.

STALENESS

White says the affidavit in support of the search warrant failed to provide probable cause because it was based on information that was four to six months old.

White argued that paragraphs one through nine of Hampshire's warrant affidavit involved conduct related to White's alleged acquisition of and sale of the lawn mowers in August and September of 2016; five to six months prior to the warrant being sought. He argues further that paragraphs 10 through 15 of the affidavit contain no dates and fail to demonstrate that there would be evidence present at White's home five to six months after the fact.

Paragraph 16 of Hampshire's affidavit states that based on his training and experience, suspects often keep these types of evidence readily accessibly in residences, vehicles, businesses, or on their person. Further, with respect to the omission of certain relevant dates, the affidavit does contain a number of investigatory steps Hampshire undertook to determine White's involvement with the stolen tractor, albeit without the dates.

"Considering all of the facts and circumstances, specifically the nature of the evidence to be seized in this case, and giving the issuing judge's determination great deference as required, (the) court concludes that White's staleness argument must fail," court documents state.

THE PARTICULARITY REQUIREMENT

The warrant affidavit in paragraphs one to 11, under the heading "Property to be Seized," lists specific items of the property that are to be taken away. White had an issue with the language in paragraph nine of Hampshire's affidavit, which stated: "any and all property belonging to the victims and/or suspects of this [sic] crimes." He contends the broad language makes the warrant an unconstitutional general warrant.

"While the language in paragraph nine appears overly broad, the other ten paragraphs under the section entitled "Property to be Seized" outlines with specificity the types of evidence to be seized and connects the language to the alleged crimes under North Carolina law," court documents state.

The court concluded the warrant does not fail because of lack of particularity.

FRANK'S HEARING REQUEST

White argued the warrant affidavit contains an intentionally false and misleading statement, or a statement made in reckless disregard for the truth.

White said paragraph 14 of the warrant affidavit includes false statements. The court agreed.

Paragraph 14 of the warrant affidavit states, in relevant part:

During the interview, William White made the comment "he was here to talk about the mower he stole[.]" He immediately recanted the "stole" to say "sold."

"Upon review of the video recording introduced at the hearing, the Court concludes that this statement in the warrant was so totally taken out of context that it was intentionally misleading and demonstrates a reckless disregard for truth," court documents state.

The relevant portion of the video of White's interview with Hampshire and Agent Denny demonstrates the following:

Denny: Has [Sgt. Hampshire] explained to you why we're here today?

White: He has told [pause] he told me a lawn mower I stole was stolen. First he told me I stole it. It was stolen. But, uh, he told me it was stolen.

Denny: Okay, alright. Do you remember selling [inaudible]

White: I guess I'll have to explain to you guys I flip stuff. So, you'll have to be...

Denny: [interrupts] Okay.

White: [continues] ...very specific with me. Houses, cars, lawn mowers, you name it. I do it all. So, you have to be extremely specific with me.

Denny: Okay.

The court document stated that not only is the statement in paragraph 14 of Hamphsire's warrant affidavit not a direct quote from White, the recording makes it clear that White was responding to the question that was posed to him by Agent Denny about whether he knew the basis for the interview.

"No reasonable person would conclude that White's statement was anything other than a response to Agent Denny's question," the court document reads.

"Specifically, Hampshire testified: 'I originally told [White] that I needed him to come in to speak to me about the lawn mower that he had stolen and then I said sold,'" court documents state. "Clearly, White was responding not only to Agent Denny's question, but was sharing what Hampshire had said to him in the message the day before."

According to the court memo, the statement made by Hampshire was intended to mislead the judge into believing White had admitted to stealing a tractor and, further, had recanted that admission.

"There is no question that the statement in paragraph 14 would compel a judge to find probable cause under the circumstances of this case. Thus, Hampshire's inclusion of the statement outlined in paragraph 14 was reckless in that it was without basis, was misleading, and further it was material to the state court's finding of probable cause," court documents state.

PLAIN-VIEW DOCTRINE

White's final argument is that the lawfulness of the rifle and silencers was not readily apparent to officers seizing them and the plain-view doctrine should not apply.

The government stands by the seizure of the rifle because the "incriminating character of the short-barreled rifle and modified suppressors was immediately apparent to Cummings."

"Cummings testified that when he entered the master bedroom, he observed the short-barreled rifle and two suppressors lying in a gun case on the bed. The third suppressor was lying open in another gun case, likewise on the bed. Cummings testified that he did not observe Mitchell, who was in the room when he entered, move any of the items from their original location; nor could he tell the court why Mitchell needed to move these items from their original location to the bed," court documents state.

According to the court memo, the government presented no evidence regarding the circumstances involving the search and the subsequent removal of the firearm and suppressors from their original location. The court, therefore, could not evaluate the government's assertion that the items were in plain view when discovered, or whether the original seizure was valid.

"The government presented no argument as to how the rifle and silencers present in White's home would be an immediately apparent violation of the statue prohibiting the possession of unregistered firearms," court documents state.

White's motion to suppress the evidence, the rifle and silencers seized from his home, from trial was granted.

The court document ends with: "The Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution requires that individuals must be protected, particularly in their homes, from unreasonable searches and seizures. When it appears that law enforcement treats this sacred constitutional right as nothing more than an impediment to making their case, we all lose."

The new Justice Department directive is garbage. Call your representative. – Washington Examiner

Congress must put an end to the Justice Department's flagrant disregard for the Fourth Amendment.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions signed an order this week making it easier for law enforcement officials to seize property from persons who have not even been charged with a crime.

"President Trump has directed this Department of Justice to reduce crime in this country, and we will use every lawful tool that we have to do that. We will continue to encourage civil asset forfeiture whenever appropriate in order to hit organized crime in the wallet," Attorney Jeff Sessions said Wednesday.

He added, "With this new policy, the American people can be confident knowing that we are taking action to defund criminals and at the same time protecting the rights of law-abiding people."

CBS News' Paula Reid explains how the newly announced DOJ policy, which marks a reverse of Obama-era restrictions, could help law enforcement officials get around state-level legislation meant to curb civil asset forfeiture:

24 states have passed laws limiting the practice, but local law enforcement can get around those restrictions by giving seized assets to the federal government instead of returning them to their owners. This practice is called "adoption" and it's been used to seize almost $1 billion in assets over the last decade.

It's bad enough that this entire practice is a clear violation of our Fourth Amendment right to be secure in our "persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures." But reversing previous civil asset forfeiture restrictions so that law enforcement agencies can skirt state laws goes far beyond bad.

If you're a conservative and you believe in personal property rights and the virtue of limited government, there's no defending a policy wherein law enforcement officials can work around local and state ordinances to seize an individual's property based entirely on suspicion.

That's some primo, grade-A garbage alright.

Congress has the power to rein in this Justice Department. Call your representative.

Australians Sound Off on Second Amendment After Fatal Shooting – Townhall

Australians have long been wary of Americas Second Amendment. Last weeks fatal shooting of an innocent Australian woman in Minnesota has only stoked their fears.

Justine Damond, 40, had called the police to report a local crime in Minneapolis. In the midst of some confusion, the officers she had called ended up accidentally shooting her to death.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Australian media is fuming over Americas relaxed gun laws. Australia has some of the strictest gun laws in the world - why can't America learn from them, they wonder.

A Daily Telegraph headline read, AMERICAN NIGHTMARE.

This country is infested with possibly more guns than people, Philip Alpers, a gun policy analyst from the University of Sydney, told the Associated Press.

Its not just the media that want answers. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull alsowants the U.S. to address the shocking shooting.

"How can a woman out in the street in her pyjamas seeking assistance from the police be shot like that?" he asked.

"It is a shocking killing, it is inexplicable.

"Yes, we are demanding answers on behalf of her family and our hearts go out to her family and all of her friends and loved ones."

More details emerged Wednesday into what transpired in the moments before the shooting. An officer reportedly heard a loud noise on the scene, leading to the deadly confusion.

Near the end of the alley, a loud sound startled Harrity. A moment later, Justine Damond, the woman who had called 911, approached the drivers side of the squad car. Suddenly a surprise burst of gunfire blasted past Harrity as Noor fired through the squads open window, striking Damond in the abdomen.

The two officers began lifesaving efforts, but within 20 minutes Damond was dead.
