Google is launching a series of gender-fluid emoji for its smartphones, the latest example of efforts to make the tiny symbols more inclusive.

Google is releasing 53 new gender-fluid emoji, according to a Fast Company exclusive — the latest example of efforts to make the tiny symbols more inclusive.

“We’re not calling this the non-binary character, the third gender, or an asexual emoji — and not gender neutral. Gender neutral is what you call pants,” Android emoji director Jennifer Daniel, who sits on the Unicode consortium, told Fast Company. “But you can create something that feels more inclusive.”

Representing All

The work-in-progress designs shared with Fast Company exhibit many of the same features of the more gendered emoji, but with tiny tweaks that make the characters appear neither male nor female — or perhaps both.

The newly designed merperson emoji, for example, boasts chin-length curls, an orange tail, and crossed arms over its chest. Meanwhile, the new vampire wears a chain across its lapels, an accessory that’s a bit more gender-neutral than the necklace or bowtie sported by the seemingly female- and male-presenting vampires, respectively.

First Launch

The new gender-fluid emoji will launch as part of a Pixel smartphone beta release this week, with a roll out to all Android Q phones planned for later in 2019, at which point they’ll join the recently released emoji designed to better represent people with disabilities.

As Fast Company points out, Google collaborates with Apple and other tech companies when developing emojis, so we could see others release their own versions of the new gender-fluid emoji in the near future.

Congress Is Furious That NASA Doesn’t Have a Moon Plan Yet

The Trump Administration wanted NASA to put an astronaut on the Moon by 2024 instead of 2028 as originally planned. So far, the new timeline isn't working.

Back in August, the Trump Administration instructed NASA to put an astronaut on the Moon by 2024 — four years sooner than originally planned.

That accelerated timeline put NASA in an unexpected tizzy, since it meant the space agency had to quickly find a way to trim four years’ worth of fat from its plans. That work hasn’t been going well, according to the Houston Chronicle — suggesting that the accelerated timeline may have been too ambitious.

NASA still hasn’t delivered the budget proposal that Congress instructed it to deliver by March, and now federal representatives want answers.

Friendly Check-In

NASA administrator Bill Gerstenmaier said that the missing budget wasn’t yet ready during a hearing with the House of Representatives Committee on Science, Space, and Technology on Wednesday. He added that he expected it to be several more weeks before NASA sorted out the budget.

“We’re flying blind,” Oklahoma representative Kendra Horn said during the hearing, going on to say that the four-year acceleration left NASA “scrambling to develop a plan and hastening to pull together a budget amendment that still hasn’t been delivered.”

“The lack of planning evident so far is no way to run a human exploration program,” she said.

Jeff Bezos' private space company Blue Origin revealed its plans to go to the Moon at a mysterious press event today, including a lunar lander design.

Jeff Bezos’ private space company Blue Origin revealed its long-awaited plans to go to the Moon at a mysterious press event today.

Bezos showed off a brand new design of its “Blue Moon” lander, which is designed to carry 6.5 tons to the surface of the Moon. According to Bezos, the Blue Origin team has been working on the design for three years.

“A very fundamental long-range problem is that we will run out of energy on Earth,” Bezos said at the event. “This is just arithmetic. It will happen.”

Prime Delivery

The solution, according to Bezos: look elsewhere for energy sources in the solar system.

The lunar lander will fit into the fairing of Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket and will feature a brand new BE-7 engine with 10,000 pounds of thrust. The new rocket will fire test for the first time as soon as this summer.

Bezos also confirmed that a modified version of the Blue Moon lander could be powerful enough to carry a pressurized ascent vehicle for astronauts to the lunar surface.

A new space on Blue Origin’s website describes the lander as being capable of “precise and soft landings” to enable “a sustained human presence on the Moon.”

Space Vision

Bezos also talked about his futuristic visions of humanity living in giant space colonies modeled after physicist Gerard O’Neill’s designs for massive cylinders that could house human settlers by spinning to provide gravity.

But launching into space is not only super expensive but very difficult. The news comes just a day after Congress grilled NASA officials over how it failed to come up with plans to get to the Moon by 2024.

Blue Origin is officially offering its new lander as an ascent vehicle for NASA’s 2024 human landing missions.

Endurance

Up until the announcement, the only clue as to what the event was about was a cryptic tweet with a picture of British explorer Ernest Shackleton’s ship called the Endurance that he explored the Antarctic with.

A site near the south pole of the Moon was named after Shackleton — a crater with rims that are exposed to almost continual sunlight.

Ethereum Won’t Fail: Joseph Lubin – ccn.com

Its no secret Ethereum was among the hardest hit coins during the crypto winter after a tough year of regulatory uncertainty surrounding security tokens and ICOs. If anyone should seem worried, it would be blockchain pioneer Joseph Lubin, whose company ConsenSys is an incubator for Ethereum projects. Yet, he couldnt appear further from losing sleep. Lubin was featured as the Interactive Keynote speaker at SXSW 2019, where he shared his zen vibe with a live audience, saying:

Ethereum is not going away. Its not going to fail. It will remain very significant. *

Increasingly, there are reasons to be optimistic about the Ethereums future. Most recently SEC Chairman Jay Clayton seemingly agreed that digital assets might not be securities based on the Howey framework. ConsenSys is intimately associated with the Ethereum protocol. It has 85 Ethereum blockchain protocol engineers busy building day in and day out.

ConsenSys projects and tools are focused on Ethereum because its the only game in town, really, said Lubin.

The way he sees the world, ConsenSys is more dependent on a decentralized ecosystem succeeding than it is any one project. Wed probably give up ifa decentralized World Wide Web never materialized, said Lubin, pointing to decentralized bandwidth, identity, and lots of other interoperating decentralized protocols.

Of course, the elephant in the room was the ETH price, which since plummeting has been stuck in a rut and unable to break out of a pretty narrow range. Lubin, however, was with Vitalik Buterin from almost the beginning and has seen market cycles come and go. He is playing the long game.

Since the start of the ecosystem and since 2009, weve seen many incredible rises in the price of these tokens followed by very significant corrections. So the most significant correction took us back one year, which was 5,000-times more valuable than when ETH was initially launched. In that context, its not so horrifying.

When times are good in the market, it brings attention to the ecosystem. Technologists and entrepreneurs are busy building. There is way more activity in our ecosystem now than a year or 18 months ago, said Lubin. Fewer people pay attention to the price of the token. But maybe thats not such a bad thing because theres a far greater increase in the number of people building things such as privacy and confidentiality systems, scalability solutions, and ETH 2.0.

Lubin sees nothing but blue skies ahead for Ethereum.

Before Ethereum can reach its wide-scale adoption, it needs to scale. Currently, it can complete between 14 and 27 transactions per second (TPS), the latter of which reflects tiny transactions. Technologies such as Plasma are Layer 2 technologies that will bolster Ethereums scalability and make the blockchain much more useful. With Layer 2 technologies, smart contracts on Ethereum can run off-chain.

Ethereum 2.0 is comingwe have eight teams building it, said Lubin, adding that theyre in phase 0 of four phases. This base layer upon which we continue to build Layer 2 scalability solutions is going to expand by at least 1,000-fold over the next 18-24 months from now. It will keep expanding after that.

As for the broader blockchain movement, he is similarly bullish. Lubin, who is a Princeton grad, pointed to the size of the global economy, which is $80 trillion.

When the blockchain fully ramifies and in 10-20 years the economy will probably be 10x as large. The blockchain will probably be the majority part of that; in dollar terms, a lot, he said.

Lubin is confident about the potential of the blockchain across sectors of the economy. There isnt an industry out there that doesnt need trust and agreements, which are what the blockchain provides. Developers can build platforms that facilitate collaboration over competition. It reflects a paradigm shift from the way that the world works today.

Ethereum (ETH) Price Starts Fresh Increase: Bitcoin Leading …

Ethereum price is gaining traction versus the US Dollar, but it is struggling against bitcoin. ETH is likely to climb higher in the near term, but it may struggle near $164-165.

Yesterday, we saw a fresh downside correction in Ethereum price from the $163-164 zone against the US Dollar. The ETH/USD pair corrected lower and broke the $160 support level. However, the 50% Fib retracement level of the upward move from the $150 low to $163 high acted as a support. Besides, the $156 level and the 100 hourly simple moving average also prevented losses. There was a false spike, but the price quickly bounced back above $158.

More importantly, yesterdays highlighted declining channel was breached with resistance near the $158 level on the hourly chart of ETH/USD. The pair broke the 50% Fib retracement level of the recent decline from the $163 high to $154 swing low. As a result, the price is now trading with a positive bias above $158. An immediate resistance is near the $160 level. It coincides with the 61.8% Fib retracement level of the recent decline from the $163 high to $154 swing low. If there is an upside break above the $160 resistance, the price is likely to climb towards the $163-164 zone.

On the downside, the main support is near the $156 level and the 100 hourly SMA. If there is a proper close below the 100 hourly SMA, the price may decline towards the $154 or $150 support levels. Bitcoin price is currently up more than 3%, but it seems like ETH price is struggling to gain pace above the $160 and $161 resistance levels.

Looking at the chart, Ethereum price is currently placed in a positive zone above $158, but it must gain traction above $160. The next stop for the bulls could be near $164 or $165. If there are further gains, there are chances of a sharp rally towards the $170 or $172 resistance level.

Bitcoin Booming As Ethereum, Ripple’s XRP, EOS And Litecoin …

Bitcoin as a whole is now worth$100 billion for the first time this year as the cryptocurrency market continues its bull run that began in early April, spurring on ethereum, Ripple's XRP, litecoin, bitcoin cash, and EOS.

The bitcoin price has begun moving towards the psychological $6,000 mark after hovering around $5,500 for the last few weeks, with the overall cryptocurrency market adding an eye-watering $40 billion to its value since early April, according to CoinMarketCap, which tracks most major cryptocurrencies.

The bitcoin price surge follows a report that suggeststhe bitcoin pricehas already bottomedfor this market cycle and is now going to resume its march higher.

The bitcoin price has been climbing steadilysince the beginning of April.

"We continue to believe the bottom is in," analysts Delphi Digital, a digital asset research firm, wrote in a report out yesterday. "The one year+ holder rate during the potential December bottom is within 1% of the one year+ holder rate during the previous cycle's bottom in January of 2015.

"Minimal selling coming from long-term holders throughout the consolidation period over the past few months. In fact, we've actually begun to see a very slight uptick among long term holders, which is consistent with the trend after the previous cycle bottomed."

The bitcoin price is up some 7% over the last 24 hour trading period, while litecoin, which has been rising for months ahead of a scheduled having later this year, is leading the market, up almost 8%.

Bitcoin cash, ethereum, Ripple's XRP and EOS have all climbed between two andseven percent over the last day's trading.

Elsewhere,Grayscale Investments,the world's largestcryptocurrency asset manager,has launched a campaign to try to convince investors to drop their gold holdings in exchange for bitcoin, arguing "bitcoin will become the store-of-value for our digital age."

The bitcoin price has jumped higher of the last 24 hours.

Bitcoin and the wider cryptocurrency market's uptick comes as the industry is reeling from the news that tether, the worlds most popular stablecoin, is not backed one-to-one with cash, as had previously been thought. Tether has, however, managed to maintain its price following the revelations.

Bitcoin is, though, trading at a$300 premium on the Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange, now over $6,000 per bitcoin, amid speculation investors are exiting the tether stablecoin, which shares management with Bitfinex.

"What the actual price is and whats being used to translate to bitcoin is part of the issue,"said Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Mike McGlone. "People on Bitfinex are getting out of tether, off the exchange and whats the first thing youre going to buy if you dont want too much broad crypto exposure? Bitcoin."

Meanwhile, bitcoin dominance, a measure of bitcoin's worth compared to the rest of the cryptocurrency market, has risen to its highest level so far this year, rising to above 55% after almost dipping under 50% just a few weeks ago.

Ethereum price is currently correcting recent gains against the US Dollar. ETH remains nicely supported on dips near the $133 and $132 support levels in the near term.

This past week, Ethereum price started a strong upward move from the $128 swing low against the US Dollar. The ETH/USD pair broke the $134 and $135 resistance levels to move into a positive zone. There was also a close above the $136 level and the 55 simple moving average (4-hours). The price gained traction above the $139-140 resistance area and climbed above the $145 level. A new monthly high was formed near $147 before the price started a downside correction.

It declined below the $142 and $140 support level. There was a break below the 50% Fib retracement level of the last wave from the $128 low to $147 high. However, there are many supports on the downside near the $136 and $133 levels. The price is currently consolidating above $136 and the 61.8% Fib retracement level of the last wave from the $128 low to $147 high. There is also a crucial bullish trend line in place with support at $133 on the 4-hours chart.

The trend line support near $133 is importance since it coincides with the 55 simple moving average (4-hours). If there is a downside break below $133 and $132, the price could move into a bearish zone. The next key support is near the $128 swing low. On the upside, the price must settle above the $139-140 resistance zone to gain bullish momentum. The next main resistances are $144 and $147.

Looking at the chart, Ethereum price clearly corrected most of its recent gains and traded below the $140 support. However, there are many key supports on the downside above $132. Therefore, there are high chances of a fresh upward move in ETH as long as it is trading above the $132 support. If buyers fail to hold $132, the price could slide towards $128 or $125.

However, buyers failed once again to clear the $140 resistance. As a result, there was a fresh decline and the price traded below the $138 and $136 support levels. There was even a close below the $135 level and the 55 simple moving average (4-hours).

During the slide, the price broke the 50% Fib retracement level of the last wave from the $122 low to $140 high. Moreover, there was a break below a connecting bullish trend line with support at $133 on the 4-hours chart. The pair even broke the $130 level and traded close to the $127 level. The 76.4% Fib retracement level of the last wave from the $122 low to $140 high is also near the $127 level. If there is an upside correction, the $133 level and the 55 simple moving average (4-hours) are likely to act as resistances.

Above the 55 simple moving average (4-hours), there is a key bearish trend line formed with resistance at $136. Therefore, the price is likely to struggle near the $133 and $136 levels in the near term. The main resistance remains $140, above which the price could test $148. On the downside, the $127 level is an initial support. If there are more losses, the price is likely to break the $125 level.

Looking at the chart, Ethereum price is back in a bearish zone and it could revisit the $122 swing low. If there is an upside correction, the price could struggle to clear the $136 resistance level. The overall bias remains bearish as long as the price is below $136 and $140.

Yesterday, there was a decent upward move in Ethereum price above the $154 and $155 resistances against the US Dollar. The ETH/USD pair even settled above the $155 level and the 100 hourly simple moving average. The pair gained bullish momentum and even broke the $158 resistance and the $159 swing high. It opened the doors for more gains above the $160 level and the 1.236 Fib extension level of the last drop from the $159 high to $150 swing low.

The price traded towards the $165 level and formed a swing high near $163. At the moment, the price is correcting lower towards $160. An immediate support is near $160 and the 23.6% Fib retracement level of the recent wave from the $150 swing low to $163 high. Moreover, there is a connecting bullish trend line in place with support near $158 on the hourly chart of ETH/USD. If there is a break below the trend line, the price could test the $156 support level. The 50% Fib retracement level of the recent wave from the $150 swing low to $163 high is near the $156 level.

Besides, the 100 hourly SMA is also close to the $156 support to prevent losses. On the upside, an initial resistance is near the $163 high. The next key resistance is near the $165 level, above which the price could start a strong wave towards the $170 and $172 levels.

Looking at the chart, Ethereum price clearly recovered nicely above the $160 resistance level. In the short term, there might be a downside correction, but dips remain well supported on the downside near the $160, $158 and $156 levels. Overall, the price is likely to extend gains above the $163 swing high as long as it is trading above the $158 support level.

Hourly MACD The MACD for ETH/USD is now placed nicely in the bullish zone.

Crypto Market Wrap: Bitcoin Cash (BCH) Leading $6 Billion Surge

Crypto markets rebound adding $6 billion; Bitcoin Cash surging, Cosmos enters the top twenty, Ravencoin flying again.

Contrary to all signals yesterday crypto markets have turned bullish again today as $6 billion gets injected back into digital assets. Bitcoins push back to resistance levels has heaved market capitalization back up to $175 billion.

Just when it looked like BTC would drop through support it bounced back at charged back to $5,400 today adding 2.5 percent. Volume remains above $14 billion and signals now have turned bullish indicating that there could be another push up to $5,600. Analysts are of mixed opinion as to where BTC will go next but more consolidation in this range is likely.

Ethereum has also gained a couple of percent on the day taking it up to $160 again. There are no real fundamentals driving ETH at the moment as it mirrors the movements of its big brother.

The top ten is all green today as Asian traders load up on altcoins. Bitcoin Cash has cranked out an 11 percent gain to reach $270 as daily volume jumps to almost $2 billion. Litecoin and Stellar have also made good gains today with 4 5 percent added, the rest are gaining a little less.

The top twenty is also all green and has a new entrant. Cosmos has arrived from nowhere to sixteenth as Coinmarketcap has just recorded ATOM market cap which is at $835 million. This has enabled it to instantly flip Tezos, ETC and NEO. XTZ has had a good day itself with 7 percent added while Tron and Monero made 4 percent on the day.

After a dump comes a pump, or is it the other way round? RVN is back with the fomo again today as it tops the top one hundred with a 17 percent surge. There doesnt appear to be a great deal driving momentum fundamentally so watch out for the dump tomorrow. The aforementioned Cosmos has pumped 12 percent surging into the top twenty and Horizen has made it into the big one hundred with a 10 percent gain today.

For the last few days ODEM has been getting fomo and today it is predictably dumping with a loss of 13 percent. There are no other major declines going on in the world of altcoins at the time of writing.

Total crypto market capitalization has jumped $6 billion, or 3.5 percent on the day. This has taken it back to the middle of the range bound channel at $175 billion. Daily volume is still solid at $46 billion and consolidation is likely to continue within this channel.

Nearly 100 years ago, Congress passed a restrictive law that cut the overall number of immigrants coming to the United States and put severe limits on those who were let in.

Journalist Daniel Okrent says that the eugenics movement a junk science that stemmed from the belief that certain races and ethnicities were morally and genetically superior to others informed the Immigration Act of 1924, which restricted entrance to the U.S.

"Eugenics was used as a primary weapon in the effort to keep Southern and Eastern Europeans out of the country," Okrent says. "[The eugenics movement] made it a palatable act, because it was based on science or presumed science."

Okrent notes the 1924 law drastically cut the number of Jews, Italians, Greeks and Eastern Europeans that could enter the country. Even during World War II, when hundreds of thousands of people were displaced and dying, access remained limited. The limits remained in place until 1965, when the Immigration and Nationality Act ended immigration restrictions based on nationality, ethnicity and race.

On what immigration was like at the turn of the 20th century, before the Immigration Act of 1924

Ellis Island opens in 1892 and within a few years it becomes one of the busiest port spots anywhere in the U.S. Ellis Island was a teeming hive of activity as hundreds of thousands in some years more than a million immigrants came pouring through. [It] was a very, very busy place and a very alienating place for a lot of people, because of the examination that people had to go through, particularly for tuberculosis, trachoma and other diseases. But once through the line, and then onto the ferry boat that took people to Manhattan, it was really a wonderful place to have been.

On the Immigration Act of 1924, and the quotas set up to restrict immigration

First, there is an overall quota. At various times it was 300,000 people, then it got chopped down to ... 162,000 people. ... The second part is where did these people come from? And it was decided that, well, let's continue to reflect the population of America as it has become, so we will decide where people can come from based on how many people of their same nationality were already here. ...

If 10 percent of the current American population came from country A, then 10 percent of that year's immigrants could come from country A. Except and this is probably the most malign and dishonest thing that came out of this entire movement they didn't do this on the basis of the 1920 census, which had been conducted just four years before, or the 1910, or even the 1900. But those numbers were based on the population in 1890, before the large immigration from Eastern and Southern Europe had begun. So to any question about whether there was any racist or anti-Semitic or anti-Italian intent, this established there clearly was. ...

So if you take the Italians, in the year before the first of the quota laws went to effect, more than 220,000 Italians came into the U.S. And the year after, under the quota, it was fewer than 4,000 and similar numbers stretched across Eastern and Southern Europe. Suddenly the door has slammed in the faces of those people who had been coming in the largest numbers, based not only on bogus science, but based on a manipulation of American history itself.

On how eugenics began

The origin of eugenics was in England in the latter half of the 19th century. It really comes out of Darwin in a way, out of some very good science. Darwin upsets the entire balance of the scientific world with his discovery and the propagation of the ideas of evolution. And then, once you establish that we are not all derived from the same people from Adam and Eve which was the prevailing view at the time, then we learned that we are not all the same. We are not all brothers, if you wish to take that particular position. And the early eugenicists believed that and thought that we could control the nature of the population of a nation the U.K. at first, or the U.S. by selective breeding. Let's have only the "good" breed with the "good," and let's not let the less-than-good breed.

On how eugenicists believed morality was an inherited trait

You find some very well-established scientists, [Henry] Fairfield Osborn, the head of the American Museum of Natural History for 25 years, he outright declared that it is not just intelligence, it is also morality that is inherited, and criminality is inherited. It's really stunning to think that people who are very, very well-credentialed in the natural sciences could believe these things. But if you begin your belief by thinking that certain peoples are inferior to other peoples, it's very easy to adapt your science to suit your own prejudice.

On the evaluations to determine which ethnic groups were the smartest

There were any number of tests in various places, almost all of them of equal unreliability to determine whether people were of sufficient intelligence. One of the most famous ones was the so-called "Alpha Test" that was given to nearly 2 million soldiers in World War I by Robert M. Yerkes, who is now memorialized in the Yerkes Primate Research Center in Atlanta, a federal facility.

Yerkes gave tests that included questions that were almost [like] Jeopardy questions, although in reverse. A question like: "Is Bud Fisher a (choose one): outfielder; cartoonist or novelist?" If you've just been in the country for five years and you don't speak English terribly well, how are you possibly going to answer a question like that? But it was taken seriously as a measure of intelligence.

What Is Quantum Computing? The Complete WIRED Guide | WIRED

Big things happen when computers get smaller. Or faster. And quantum computing is about chasing perhaps the biggest performance boost in the history of technology. The basic idea is to smash some barriers that limit the speed of existing computers by harnessing the counterintuitive physics of subatomic scales.

If the tech industry pulls off that, ahem, quantum leap, you wont be getting a quantum computer for your pocket. Dont start saving for an iPhone Q. We could, however, see significant improvements in many areas of science and technology, such as longer-lasting batteries for electric cars or advances in chemistry that reshape industries or enable new medical treatments. Quantum computers wont be able to do everything faster than conventional computers, but on some tricky problems they have advantages that would enable astounding progress.

Its not productive (or polite) to ask people working on quantum computing when exactly those dreamy applications will become real. The only thing for sure is that they are still many years away. Prototype quantum computing hardware is still embryonic. But powerfuland, for tech companies, profit-increasingcomputers powered by quantum physics have recently started to feel less hypothetical.

Thats because Google, IBM, and others have decided its time to invest heavily in the technology, which, in turn, has helped quantum computing earn a bullet point on the corporate strategy PowerPoint slides of big companies in areas such as finance, like JPMorgan, and aerospace, like Airbus. In 2017, venture investors plowed $241 million into startups working on quantum computing hardware or software worldwide, according to CB Insights. Thats triple the amount in the previous year.

Like the befuddling math underpinning quantum computing, some of the expectations building around this still-impractical technology can make you lightheaded. If you squint out the window of a flight into SFO right now, you can see a haze of quantum hype drifting over Silicon Valley. But the enormous potential of quantum computing is undeniable, and the hardware needed to harness it is advancing fast. If there were ever a perfect time to bend your brain around quantum computing, its now. Say Schrodingers superposition three times fast, and we can dive in.

The prehistory of quantum computing begins early in the 20th century, when physicists began to sense they had lost their grip on reality.

First, accepted explanations of the subatomic world turned out to be incomplete. Electrons and other particles didnt just neatly carom around like Newtonian billiard balls, for example. Sometimes they acted like waves instead. Quantum mechanics emerged to explain such quirks, but introduced troubling questions of its own. To take just one brow-wrinkling example, this new math implied that physical properties of the subatomic world, like the position of an electron, didnt really exist until they were observed.

Physicist Paul Benioff suggests quantum mechanics could be used for computation.

Nobel-winning physicist Richard Feynman, at Caltech, coins the term quantum computer.

Physicist David Deutsch, at Oxford, maps out how a quantum computer would operate, a blueprint that underpins the nascent industry of today.

Mathematician Peter Shor, at Bell Labs, writes an algorithm that could tap a quantum computers power to break widely used forms of encryption.

D-Wave, a Canadian startup, announces a quantum computing chip it says can solve Sudoku puzzles, triggering years of debate over whether the companys technology really works.

If you find that baffling, youre in good company. A year before winning a Nobel for his contributions to quantum theory, Caltechs Richard Feynman remarked that nobody understands quantum mechanics. The way we experience the world just isnt compatible. But some people grasped it well enough to redefine our understanding of the universe. And in the 1980s a few of themincluding Feynmanbegan to wonder if quantum phenomena like subatomic particles' dont look and I dont exist trick could be used to process information. The basic theory or blueprint for quantum computers that took shape in the 80s and 90s still guides Google and others working on the technology.

Before we belly flop into the murky shallows of quantum computing 0.101, we should refresh our understanding of regular old computers. As you know, smartwatches, iPhones, and the worlds fastest supercomputer all basically do the same thing: they perform calculations by encoding information as digital bits, aka 0s and 1s. A computer might flip the voltage in a circuit on and off to represent 1s and 0s for example.

Quantum computers do calculations using bits, too. After all, we want them to plug into our existing data and computers. But quantum bits, or qubits, have unique and powerful properties that allow a group of them to do much more than an equivalent number of conventional bits.

Qubits can be built in various ways, but they all represent digital 0s and 1s using the quantum properties of something that can be controlled electronically. Popular examplesat least among a very select slice of humanityinclude superconducting circuits, or individual atoms levitated inside electromagnetic fields. The magic power of quantum computing is that this arrangement lets qubits do more than just flip between 0 and 1. Treat them right and they can flip into a mysterious extra mode called a superposition.

You may have heard that a qubit in superposition is both 0 and 1 at the same time. Thats not quite true and also not quite falsetheres just no equivalent in Homo sapiens humdrum classical reality. If you have a yearning to truly grok it, you must make a mathematical odyssey WIRED cannot equip you for. But in the simplified and dare we say perfect world of this explainer, the important thing to know is that the math of a superposition describes the probability of discovering either a 0 or 1 when a qubit is read outan operation that crashes it out of a quantum superposition into classical reality. A quantum computer can use a collection of qubits in superpositions to play with different possible paths through a calculation. If done correctly, the pointers to incorrect paths cancel out, leaving the correct answer when the qubits are read out as 0s and 1s.

It's the trick that makes quantum computers tick, and makes qubits more powerful than ordinary bits. A superposition is in an intuition-defying mathematical combination of both 0 and 1. Quantum algorithms can use a group of qubits in a superposition to shortcut through calculations.

A quantum effect so unintuitive that Einstein dubbed it spooky action at a distance. When two qubits in a superposition are entangled, certain operations on one have instant effects on the other, a process that helps quantum algorithms be more powerful than conventional ones.

The holy grail of quantum computinga measure of how much faster a quantum computer could crack a problem than a conventional computer could. Quantum computers arent well-suited to all kinds of problems, but for some they offer an exponential speedup, meaning their advantage over a conventional computer grows explosively with the size of the input problem.

For some problems that are very time consuming for conventional computers, this allows a quantum computer to find a solution in far fewer steps than a conventional computer would need. Grovers algorithm, a famous quantum search algorithm, could find you in a phone book with 100 million names with just 10,000 operations. If a classical search algorithm just spooled through all the listings to find you, it would require 50 million operations, on average. For Grovers and some other quantum algorithms, the bigger the initial problemor phonebookthe further behind a conventional computer is left in the digital dust.

The reason we dont have useful quantum computers today is that qubits are extremely finicky. The quantum effects they must control are very delicate, and stray heat or noise can flip 0s and 1s, or wipe out a crucial superposition. Qubits have to be carefully shielded, and operated at very cold temperatures, sometimes only fractions of a degree above absolute zero. Most plans for quantum computing depend on using a sizable chunk of a quantum processors power to correct its own errors, caused by misfiring qubits.

Recent excitement about quantum computing stems from progress in making qubits less flaky. Thats giving researchers the confidence to start bundling the devices into larger groups. Startup Rigetti Computing recently announced it has built a processor with 128 qubits made with aluminum circuits that are super-cooled to make them superconducting. Google and IBM have announced their own chips with 72 and 50 qubits, respectively. Thats still far fewer than would be needed to do useful work with a quantum computerit would probably require at least thousandsbut as recently as 2016 those companies best chips had qubits only in the single digits. After tantalizing computer scientists for 30 years, practical quantum computing may not exactly be close, but it has begun to feel a lot closer.

Some large companies and governments have started treating quantum computing research like a raceperhaps fittingly its one where both the distance to the finish line and the prize for getting there are unknown.

Google, IBM, Intel, and Microsoft have all expanded their teams working on the technology, with a growing swarm of startups such as Rigetti in hot pursuit. China and the European Union have each launched new programs measured in the billions of dollars to stimulate quantum R&D. And in the US, the Trump White House has created a new committee to coordinate government work on quantum information science. Several bills were introduced to Congress in 2018 proposing new funding for quantum research, totalling upwards of $1.3 billion. Its not quite clear what the first killer apps of quantum computing will be, or when they will appear. But theres a sense that whoever is first make these machines useful will gain big economic and national security advantages.

Back in the world of right now, though, quantum processors are too simple to do practical work. Google is working to stage a demonstration known as quantum supremacy, in which a quantum processor would solve a carefully designed math problem beyond existing supercomputers. But that would be an historic scientific milestone, not proof quantum computing is ready to do real work.

As quantum computer prototypes get larger, the first practical use for them will probably be for chemistry simulations. Computer models of molecules and atoms are vital to the hunt for new drugs or materials. Yet conventional computers cant accurately simulate the behavior of atoms and electrons during chemical reactions. Why? Because that behavior is driven by quantum mechanics, the full complexity of which is too great for conventional machines. Daimler and Volkswagen have both started investigating quantum computing as a way to improve battery chemistry for electric vehicles. Microsoft says other uses could include designing new catalysts to make industrial processes less energy intensive, or even to pull carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere to mitigate climate change.

Quantum computers would also be a natural fit for code-breaking. Weve known since the 90s that they could zip through the math underpinning the encryption that secures online banking, flirting, and shopping. Quantum processors would need to be much more advanced to do this, but governments and companies are taking the threat seriously. The National Institute of Standards and Technology is in the process of evaluating new encryption systems that could be rolled out to quantum-proof the internet.

Tech companies such as Google are also betting that quantum computers can make artificial intelligence more powerful. Thats further in the future and less well mapped out than chemistry or code-breaking applications, but researchers argue they can figure out the details down the line as they play around with larger and larger quantum processors. One hope is that quantum computers could help machine-learning algorithms pick up complex tasks using many fewer than the millions of examples typically used to train AI systems today.

Despite all the superposition-like uncertainty about when the quantum computing era will really begin, big tech companies argue that programmers need to get ready now. Google, IBM, and Microsoft have all released open source tools to help coders familiarize themselves with writing programs for quantum hardware. IBM has even begun to offer online access to some of its quantum processors, so anyone can experiment with them. Long term, the big computing companies see themselves making money by charging corporations to access data centers packed with supercooled quantum processors.

Whats in it for the rest of us? Despite some definite drawbacks, the age of conventional computers has helped make life safer, richer, and more convenientmany of us are never more than five seconds away from a kitten video. The era of quantum computers should have similarly broad reaching, beneficial, and impossible to predict consequences. Bring on the qubits.

Yet while hardware has improved markedly in recent years, and investment is surging, there are still open scientific questions about the physics underlying quantum computing.

Microsoft will open-source parts of Q#, the programming …

Much has been made of Microsofts reinvention as an open-source company, and it will continue to live up to that billing Monday at Microsoft Build as the world prepares for quantum computing.

Microsoft plans to open-source the Q# compiler and quantum simulators that it includes as part of its quantum development kit sometime in the near future, the company plans to announce Monday at Build. The idea is to help researchers and universities studying quantum computing have deeper access to these tools in order to help contribute to their development and understanding of quantum technology, the company said in materials provided ahead of Build.

Quantum computing is still pretty far off in the future, but one day it is expected to allow computer scientists to bypass the limits of so-called classical computing to reach new levels of performance. Todays computers represent information using an amazingly complex string of 0s and 1s to represent data, but quantum computers will be able to use more than two states to represent data.

There are lots of different routes to quantum computing, and Microsoft is pursuing a distinct vision thats unique compared to some of the others chasing this grail. Q# is a big part of this approach, because while building a viable quantum computer is hard enough, programming one is going to require a new way of looking at the world.

Open-sourcing the compiler which takes code written by developers in a programming language and makes it run on a computer could help budding quantum developers better understand how to write more efficient code and reduce errors preventing their applications from running. And open-source simulators could make it easier for developers to test their quantum applications before letting them fly on quantum machines, which are likely to be pretty expensive in their early days.

Microsoft is expected to provide more information about its open-source quantum projects this week at Build, where more than 6,000 people are expected to attend to hear details about a lot of Microsofts current projects.

Watch This “Police Robot” Pull a Car Over

Traffic Stop Robocop

American nonprofit research institute SRI International has developed a prototype of what it’s calling a “police robot,” as IEEE Spectrum reports. The robot is meant to prevent accidents that occur when the police pull over drivers.

The brain behind the bot is Rueben Brewer, a senior robotics research engineer at SRI. Brewer started building the prototype in his garage.

“With such dangerous interactions between people, maybe it’s time to send a robot in between them, one that can’t hurt or be hurt,” reads the caption of the video. “Our robot goes between people to keep everyone safe.”

License and Registration

The cop bot is attached to a telescopic robotic arm that can extend from the side of the cop car to reach the window of the pulled over vehicle in front of it. The office is then able to communicate with the driver via a webcam.

From there, Brewer’s robocop can do it all: it can scan the driver’s license, spit out a ticket, and even deploy spikes to stop a perp from getting away.

Personal gadgets known as “hearables,” which communicate with the neural signals passing through our ears in order to monitor and interact with our brains, are on their way.

Hearables could help us focus on specific conversations, like smart hearing aids, or monitor our brain activity to treat tinnitus. That’s according to Poppy Crum, the Stanford University neuroscientist and chief scientist at Dolby Laboratories who coined the term, who recently wrote about the concept in IEEE Spectrum.

The emerging tech stands to blur the lines between artificial and biological intelligence, Crum argues — augmenting our thought processes and collaborating with our brains.

Plug And Play

Other wearables, like Google Glass, were ridiculed for being dorky and potentially creepy. But a hearable could help people isolate specific conversations or monitor neural health without constantly being the topic of conversation by curious passers-by.

And the ear is the logical choice for such a connection to the brain, argues Crum.

“The ear is like a biological equivalent of a USB port,” writes Crum. “It is unparalleled not only as a point for ‘writing’ to the brain, as happens when our earbuds transmit the sounds of our favorite music, but also for ‘reading’ from the brain.”

Surround Sound

Based on the progress of various teams around the world, Crum argues that the technology for these wearable brain-computer interfaces could be developed within five years.

“When we do, hearables will constantly and silently assess and anticipate our needs and state of mind while helping us cope with the world around us,” Crum writes. “They will be our true life partners.”

Hubble scientists just assembled a dizzying composite image made of 16 years of Hubble Space Telescope observations that includes 265,000 galaxies.

A resplendent new composite image shows off 265,000 galaxies — which were slowly but surely captured over 16 years of observations by the Hubble Space Telescope.

The image, called the Hubble Legacy Field, is made up of 7,500 separate images of distant galaxies. Some are so far away that our images of them represent how they looked as far back as just 500 million years after the Big Bang, according to a press release.

If you don’t want to download a massive image file, Business Insider’s Dave Mosher uploaded a version that people can scroll around and explore.

You can zoom in and watch tiny specks of lights reveal themselves to be entire galaxies — some of which Hubble scientists say are 10 billion times too faint to see with the naked eye.

“Now that we have gone wider than in previous surveys, we are harvesting many more distant galaxies in the largest such dataset ever produced,” Garth Illingworth, the University of California, Santa Cruz scientist who led the project to assemble the image. “No image will surpass this one until future space telescopes like James Webb are launched.”

Many companies rely on radar signals and satellites to predict the weather.

Boston-based startup ClimaCell, however, pulls its data from a range of sources including cell phones, street cameras, connected vehicles, and drones. This allows it to forecast weather conditions on a hyper-local level — and with what it claims is 60 percent better accuracy.

“A lot of the things around us actually sense the weather, just not by design,” ClimaCell co-founder Rei Goffer recently told Borgen Magazine. “They’re affected by the weather, and by looking at how they’re affected you can actually reverse engineer things and see through that.”

Several major airlines and transportation companies have already invested in ClimaCell in the hopes of improving their ability to forecast weather conditions.

However, the startup might make its biggest impact in places without any current forecasting systems in place.

“Developing countries like India don’t have sufficient weather infrastructure, like radar and weather stations, to ensure public safety and serve the private sector,” co-founder Shimon Elkabetz told Forbes in 2017. “Our technology helps countries leapfrog from no weather data to granular data using software. We can issue alerts about flooding, including warnings to citizens and information for rescue teams.”

Medical First: Doctor Performs Open Heart Surgery in the Street

In a medical first, doctors saved a stabbing victim's life by performing open-heart surgery in the street because he wouldn't have survived to the hospital.

After a man was stabbed in Durham, England, medical personnel arriving at the scene worried he might not survive the trip to the hospital. Instead of taking that risk, according to The Independent, the two doctors began to perform emergency heart surgery right there in the street.

It was a risky procedure, but one that ultimately paid off — the surgery was a success and the man, who had gone into cardiac arrest before the doctors arrived, survived.

The doctors attribute the successful procedure to the fact that they were able to reach the stabbing victim within 15 minutes, per The Independent.

“I think it’s proof that if everything works in terms of the patient getting good care on scene straight away, if we can [utilize] the aircraft or the car and get the team to the scene as quickly as possible, then we can make a difference to that patient,” Chris Smith, the doctor who performed the procedure to remove a blood clot and restart the man’s heart, told The Independent.

In short, that doesn’t mean that more doctors should replace operating rooms with street scenes — but it does mean a robust healthcare infrastructure can make all the difference during an emergency.

Watch This Hulking Robot Play “The Floor Is Lava”

In IHMC Robotics' new video, its humanoid robot Atlas autonomously traverses suspended wooden planks and wobbly cinder blocks.

On Friday, IHMC Robotics unveiled a new video in which a humanoid robot named Atlas gingerly — and autonomously — walks across various objects, including suspended wooden planks and wobbly cinder blocks.

It basically looks like someone challenged the robot to play “the floor is lava” with the leftover supplies from a construction site, and the bot is surprisingly good at the game — putting it a step closer to one day filling in for humans on dangerous missions.

Step Ahead

Boston Dynamics built Atlas, but IHMC Robotics wrote the algorithms giving the bot the dexterity demonstrated in the video.

In the description posted along with the clip, the company says the humanoid relies on LIDAR to build a map of the area it’s supposed to traverse, and then uses an algorithm to determine each step it should take to reach the other side.

Currently Atlas is successful with about half of its attempts, according to IHMC, but the company is already working to increase that rate by improving the robot’s balance and the range of motion in its joints.

If IHMC can pull it off, Atlas might one day do far more than dominate at sleepover games — the goal is for the robot to serve as an avatar for humans in dangerous emergency scenarios or even as they explore Mars.
