We need to learn a new language, said Kevin Camphuis, co-founder of Paris-based business accelerator Shakeup Factory.

Food choices, he explained, were once split between a Latin diet (characterised by an attitude of food meaning pleasure, taste and a social occasion) and the Anglo-Saxon diet (based on the philosophy that food equalled fuel and functionality).

However, there is a new culture of food which is more flexitarian and vegetarian, he said. The values the new generations have towards food is completely different to past generations. These eaters have a fast and casual approach to food, noted Camphuis. They seek food on demand that has health benefits. They are interested in plant-based foods, sustainability and novel ingredients.

"We've been growing, transforming, packaging, selling and eating the same food the same way for 60 years, said Camphuis. And it's over now. There's a new vocabulary that we have to learn that is very different from the previous one.

Whereas consumers traditionally sought two-to-three meals a day and made decisions based on trust, price and functionality, younger eaters demand as much as five-to-seven foods a day and value variety and immediacy.

Rick Miller from market research company Mintel agreed."The generation born after 1995 are questioning more and are less trustworthy of the bigger brands. That mean that smaller artisan brands seem to do better as they're leaner and they can change their business models to reflect consumers growing needs. What sits well with these consumers, he said, are brands that tell a story not just in terms of their product, but what they stand for as a company".

Miller cited the brand Tribe, which makes cereal bars aimed at runners, as an example of a company successfully 'telling a story' to connect with these consumers.

"Their whole business model and premise is based around fuelling from a clean and natural point of view but is also centred around ending modern slavery: its a powerful message and also niche. They're not talking about climate change or their carbon footprint: they're talking about this in particular and they've built and entire community around that."

The younger generation wants to know that brands care, and what they stand for, he continued. "It's not good enough now just to say 'we produce the best boiled sweets on the planet.'"

They also want snacks. "The snackifaction of our culture continues to escalate which may or may not be a good thing for the obesity crisis, noted Miller. We're also getting sportification and the merging of different sectors that were once very distinct. For example a few years ago you never would have seen an average consumer having creatine or Beta-Alanine or even protein supplements. Now you can go into any supermarket and buy a protein dink or a soft drink with cognitive enhancing ingredients, Nootropics and botanicals. The consumer wants more functionality, they want a merging of sectors together.

Interestingly, not all these food trends are being led by younger people. Populations are, after all, ageing dramatically in most developed countries. "We're living longer, but we're spending less years of our lives in good health," said Miller.

As such, consumers will increasingly demand food and beverage innovations offering solutions in areas such as mental alertness, physical resilience and skin reticence.

Meanwhile, Miller presented the tantalising question of what happens when two trends ageing populations and young people and the sustainability agenda meet? "The NHS [the UKs free healthcare system] produces nearly 6% of the UK's greenhouse emissions and wastes 100,000 meals a day in hospitals. Are we going to see the rise of the sustainable patient eventually?

Andres Montefeltro, CEO of Spain-based cultured meat company Cubiq Foods, added: "I think the opportunity here is that they need us to generate a new type of food. We used to say that processed food is bad. And now processed food can become more nutritional, and healthier than natural ones.

NASA picks the asteroid crater its spacecraft will steal rocks from next summer – The Verge

Next year, NASA plans to scoop up a small batch of dirt from an asteroid named Bennu, located millions of miles from Earth and now the agency knows which part of the space rock its going to steal from. Today, the space agency announced that one of its spacecraft will attempt to grab some particles from a 20-meter-wide crater, called Nightingale, on the asteroid.

Engineers picked the Nightingale site from four final candidate spots on Bennu, arguing it could be the best place to find organic material and water on the asteroid that may hail from the earliest days of the Solar System. This one really came out on top, because of the scientific value, Dante Lauretta, the principal investigator of the asteroid sampling mission, said during a press conference announcing the selection. However, targeting the crater is not without risk. The area is surrounded by a large wall of rocks, which could make it difficult to grab a sample. But ultimately, Lauretta said the area could have what theyre looking for.

Scientists are hoping to get a sample that will provide the best snapshot of what the early Solar System was like billions of years ago when it first formed. Asteroids are thought to be rocky remnants of the early Solar System, having stayed relatively the same over time and still containing materials that were present during the birth of the planets. Studying an asteroids offerings in a lab here on Earth could help us unlock some of the secrets of how our cosmic neighborhood came to be.

The robot tasked with grabbing and delivering these asteroid particles to our planet is the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft. The vehicle has been circling around Bennu for the last year, after spending two years traveling through space to reach the asteroid. During this hang out time, the spacecraft has been using various instruments to map Bennus surface and get a detailed understanding of what the rocks terrain is like. That way, the engineering team behind OSIRIS-REx could pick the best site for the vehicle to sample.

Well, it turns out that Bennu is not a particularly amenable space rock. Almost immediately after OSIRIS-REx got to Bennu, NASA engineers realized that the asteroid was incredibly rugged and rocky. Its quite different than what they thought it would be; based on their observations of the object from Earth, scientists thought that Bennu would house patches of smooth, sandy grains with very few boulders. Turns out there are hundreds of large boulders lurking on the asteroid, and smooth areas are almost nowhere to be seen.

That has made it extra tough to figure out the best place to grab a sample. To scoop up material from Bennu, OSIRIS-REx is equipped with a thin robotic arm that is meant to extend from the spacecraft and gently tap the asteroid, sending particles shooting up into the vehicles sample chamber. If OSIRIS-REx targets a particularly rugged patch, it could throw the sampler off or even cause the instrument to get clogged with large pieces of debris.

The OSIRIS-REx team only gets one shot at sampling Bennu, so selecting this site was an incredibly important part of the mission. After mapping the surface, engineers scoured the images and used algorithms and software to find flat parts of Bennu. NASA even put out a call to the public to help find possible targets. After identifying 50 potential sites, the OSIRIS-REx team eventually whittled it down to four, finally landing on the Nightingale crater.

Nightingale is filled with lots of fine grain material, but it also has a few larger boulders, making it one of the riskier spots to target. But scientists think the risk is worth it. For one, the crater is located pretty far north on the asteroid, where temperatures are cooler than other areas. Thats extra enticing because the cold temperatures may have kept the material in the crater well preserved from the early days of the Solar System; the particles may not have changed dynamically over time from heating. Additionally, the OSIRIS-REx team thinks that the crater is relatively new, so the material within the region has actually been inside Bennu for a long time until being unearthed recently. That also means the material may have stayed relatively unchanged, since it hasnt been exposed to the harsh radiation-filled space environment for very long.

Because Nightingale is a bit perilous, the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft has to be extra precise when it descends to the asteroids surface. The boulders surrounding the site could cause the spacecraft to tilt and then accidentally run into a rock as it tries to leave the asteroid. One of the rocks has even been nicknamed Mount Doom, since its extra tall and peak-shaped. Its a substantial building-sized obstruction, and were trying to get into a crater thats on the order of a few parking lot spaces wide, said Lauretta. So we are doing a really tight job parking that, and were aware that we have hazards around us. So precision navigation to that sample material is our biggest challenge. To be extra careful, the team has added some additional safety measures, programming the spacecraft to detect if its coming down on too rocky a surface. If so, itll fire its thrusters and fly away.

However, doing that will come with a cost. Firing thrusters on Nightingale may mess up the position of the material in the crater. If that does happen, the team will target a backup site called Osprey, which isnt as scientifically exciting but a bit more smooth.

Currently, NASA is hoping to grab a sample from Nightingale in the summer of 2020, with the goal of collecting at least 60 grams of material. Once a sample is obtained, OSIRIS-REx will head back home in 2021 and attempt to land in the Utah desert in 2023. If the sample does contain water and organic material like the team hopes, it could reinforce the idea that asteroids like Bennu may have brought this material to Earth when it was freshly formed. And that could be a substantial piece of evidence for how life came to be on our planet.

NASA gives go-ahead for Starliner test flight to space station – Spaceflight Now

NASA officials cleared Boeings Starliner spacecraft for flight Thursday after a thorough and comprehensive review of the crew capsules readiness, setting the stage for final pre-launch preparations at Cape Canaveral ahead of liftoff Dec. 20 on an unpiloted demonstration mission to the International Space Station.

The Starliners Orbital Flight Test will blast off on top of a 172-foot-tall (52.4-meter) United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The test flight is a prerequisite for the first Starliner launch with astronauts on-board, a milestone mission scheduled some time in 2020.

Together, NASA and Boeing are ready to demonstrate the capabilities of the CST-100 Starliner spacecraft ton top of a human-rated Atlas 5 rocket, said James Morhard, NASAs deputy administrator. This is the first flight test to the International Space Station of this new crew-capable system.

During a full day of briefings and discussion Thursday at NASAs Kennedy Space Center, representatives from NASA, Boeing and United Launch Alliance reviewed the status of flight hardware, software and the space stations readiness to receive the Starliner spacecraft.

We are go for launch for the Orbital Flight Test next Friday, Dec. 20, said Phil McAlister, director of NASAs commercial spaceflight development programs. Theres still some standard open work to complete, and a couple of technical issues we have to close out, so we could move off the 20th. But right now, the 20th is looking good.

John Mulholland, vice president and general manager of Boeings commercial crew program, said engineers continue to assess several unresolved issues, including a NASA verification of data showing the Starliner for the Orbital Flight Test matches Boeings design.

Part of our requirements was to provide that dataset to the International Space Station program, Mulholland said. They are almost complete with that review, but they are conducting a thorough review of that to make sure that theyre satisfied with the thoroughness of our build.

Mulholland said final analysis and qualification of the Starliners mission data load, which will be loaded into the capsules computer Tuesday, is also ongoing.

The launch time Dec. 20 is set for 6:36 a.m. EST (1136 GMT), roughly the moment Earths rotation brings Cape Canaverals Complex 41 launch pad under the space stations orbital plane.

The Atlas 5s Russian-made RD-180 main engine and two Aerojet Rocketdyne solid rocket boosters will power the launcher off the pad. A dual-engine Centaur upper stage will power the Starliner into space and deploy the capsule on a preliminary suborbital trajectory. The capsules own thrusters will fire about a half-hour after liftoff to reach a stable orbit and begin its pursuit of the station.

While officially getting the authority to proceed with the launch, its important to remember that the launch of the Starliner is just the beginning, Mulholland said Thursday. The spacecraft will spend about eight days in orbit, and weve got a highly skilled team who will be executing the mission.

Boeing, ULA and NASA have backup launch opportunities reserved with the U.S. Air Forces Eastern Range at Cape Canaveral for Dec. 21 and Dec. 23.

Assuming the launch occurs Dec. 20, docking of the Starliner spacecraft with the International Space Stations Harmony module is scheduled for Dec. 21 at 8:08 a.m. EST (1308 GMT).

The space station crew will open hatches and enter the Starliner spacecraft, retrieving cargo and performing inspections during the ships week-long stay.

At the conclusion of the eight-day test flight, the Starliner is scheduled to undock from the space station Dec. 28 around 2:16 a.m. EST (0716 GMT). After backing away to a safe distance, the 16.5-foot-tall (5-meter) capsule will fire its service module engines at 5:02 a.m. EST (1002 GMT) for a deorbit burn.

After slowing its speed enough to fall back into the atmosphere, the Starliner will jettison its disposable service module. The crew module will orient itself to fly belly first, exposing its heat shield to temperatures up to 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit (1,650 degrees Celsius).

While the service module burns up in the atmosphere, the spacecrafts crew module will unfurl three main parachutes to slow down for landing. The capsule will inflate airbags to cushion its touchdown at White Sands Space Harbor in New Mexico on Dec. 28 at 5:48 a.m. EST (1048 GMT).

Recovery teams will be on standby at White Sands, the missions preferred landing site, to safe and retrieve the spaceship. They will transport the capsule back to Florida for refurbishment and reuse on a future crewed Starliner flight.

Mainly, the focus of this flight is to prove out the spacecrafts ability to get to the International Space Station and dock safely, transfer the cargo, and then safely return back to White Sands, Mulholland said.

The Flight Readiness Review held Thursday was a major milestone in the Starliners first launch campaign.

The Boeing team, in particular, went above and beyond in the last few months to complete the necessary testing and prepare the necessary certification products required for this review, McAlister said. Everyone is eager to see this mission fly, but the NASA team did a thorough and comprehensive job verifying all the safety products.

If someone saw something that gave them pause or required additional work, they spoke up, we talked about it, and in some cases, we developed additional data to help close the open item, McAlister said. The team worked quickly but they didnt hurry, and I think that speaks to the competence and professionalism of the team.

NASA is paying Boeing more than $4.8 billion for the Starliner program through a series of agreements and contracts since 2010. While the decade-long development of the Starliner spacecraft is nearing the finish line, the unpiloted test flight later this month is a precursor to future flights with astronauts.

Boeing astronaut Chris Ferguson, a former space shuttle commander, will fly on the Starliners first crewed test flight next year. NASA astronauts Mike Fincke and Nicole Mann will join Ferguson on the mission to the space station, where they could stay for up to six months.

The Starliners demonstration flight this month will also test the capsules life support systems before astronauts fly next year. An instrumented test dummy named Rosie the Astronaut will ride in one of the capsules seats to collect data on the environments astronauts will see on future missions.

This uncrewed test flight is not just another contract milestone, McAlister said Thursday. Its just a phenomenal opportunity for us to learn the true performance of the spacecraft. Computer models are great, but they only go so far. Seeing how the spacecraft actually performs in the operational environment of space is a huge confidence-building measure, and its going to provide us with the critical data we need for the final certification.

McAlister cautioned that the Starliners first trip to space will be risky.

While weve done everything we think is necessary prior to flight, there will undoubtedly be some unexpected results, he said. This is a test, and testing inevitably identifies some items that were unanticipated, and some of those items may even be unwelcome, but we are going to work through all those challenges that may arise in order to get our crew members to space, and our spacecraft will be better because of it.

NASAs other commercial crew partner, SpaceX, conducted the first unpiloted test flight of its Crew Dragon spacecraft to the station in March. Kathy Lueders, manager of NASAs commercial crew program, said Thursday that SpaceX could launch its first Crew Dragon flight with astronauts in the first quarter of 2020.

After the Starliner and Crew Dragon complete their first crewed missions, NASA plans to certify both vehicles for regular crew rotation flights to the space station. Each capsule will carry at least four astronauts for NASA and international partners to and from the station, ending U.S. reliance on Russian Soyuz crew ferry ships.

A fifth seat on Starliner missions could be sold commercially for space tourists or private astronauts.

We have not had this capability in the United States since the retirement of the space shuttle in 2011, and we are looking forward to ending that gap, McAlister said.

We understand how the star at the center of our solar system nourishes life on Earth. But it also burns, fizzes and spews in ways that are bewildering.

It is a long-standing mystery why the sun's crown, or corona, sizzles at millions of degrees, while the surface beneath is comparatively cool, simmering at only a few thousand. And, curiously, the "solar wind" of particles and magnetic fields blowing off the sun, which fills the entire solar system, accelerates as it increases in distance from it. To investigate, NASA sent a spacecraft straight to the source: the sun itself.

This week at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco, solar researchers presented new findings from the Parker Solar Probe, elaborating upon the initial data release last week.

Scientists are hopeful a better understanding of the sun will improve predictions of solar storms, rowdy ejections of fiery plasma from the sun, which can knock out electrical grids, take out satellites and harm the health of astronauts.

Now that the Parker Solar Probe has made three close passes to the sun, flying closer than any former spacecraft, astronomers are getting an unprecedented view.

"Because we've flown through with in situ measurements, we can really understand some of the detail that we've only had hints at before," said NASA astrophysicist Nicholeen Viall on Wednesday. "This matters because it's telling us about fundamental physical processes as this material is created and sent out into the solar system."

Researchers have likened studying the solar wind to studying the source of a waterfall. If you can only observe from the base of the fall, the stream will be mixed and you'll end up understanding very little. This is the view of the solar wind from Earth. With the Parker Solar Probe, scientists are able to effectively crawl up the waterfall.

"We can see that there is underlying structure, there's intermittency, the wind is emerging in a bursty fashion from the sun," said Stuart Bale, UC Berkeley physics professor and lead researcher for some of the probe's instruments, in a statement.

New Data, New Records

At AGU, researchers presented new images and findings hinting at the mechanics behind the sun's spew of solar wind. Researchers characterized particles and magnetic fields in solar storms or "coronal mass ejections." For the first time, they've observed these CMEs sweeping up and freshly energizing particles that the sun had spit out.

Researchers also elaborated on the Parker Solar Probe's discovery of what scientists are calling "switchbacks," when the solar magnetic field doubles back on itself. Researchers think these may help heat and accelerate the solar wind.

The Parker Solar Probe now holds the record for the spacecraft to pass closest to the sun, cruising about 15 million miles from the solar surface on three different passes. In 2025 it is expected to pass within 4 million miles; eventually, it will spiral into the sun and burn up. The probe is also the fastest spacecraft in history, cruising our inner solar system at about 430,000 miles per hour.

NASA’s Sun-Orbiting Probe Reveals New Secrets of Our Host Star – Smithsonian.com

In August 2018, NASA launched the Parker Solar Probe toward the sun to analyze and measure the G-type yellow dwarf star that makes life on Earth possible. Now, after the spacecraft completed 3 of 24 planned close orbits around the sun, researchers have released four papers published in the journal Nature detailing the probe's first findings.

The $1.5 billion probe has flown closer to the sun than any spacecraft in history, passing through the suns upper atmosphere, or corona, for the first time. The probe is loaded up with several suites of instruments that collect data about solar wind, plasma flows, the suns magnetic field and more, reports Alexandra Witze at Nature News & Comment.

Scientists at University of California, Berkeley led by plasma physicist Stuart Bale control the probes devices, fittingly dubbed FIELDS, that study the suns magnetic and electric fields. A second toolkit called SWEAPor Solar Wind Electrons Alphas and Protons, operated by the University of Michigan and the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatorymeasures the particles of solar winds. The probes imaging instrument WISPR is led by the Naval Research Lab. Another group of devicescalled the Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun suite, led by Princeton Universitymeasures the suns outflow of energetic particles, like electrons and ions. Together, data from all of these instruments are revolutionizing what we know about the star.

Solar winds constantly wash over Earth, but studying the phenomenon from an earthly vantage point is like trying to understand the origin of a waterfall by standing halfway down the cliff, explains Bale. Expanding on the waterfall analogy, Bale tells Witze, [i]f you want to know the source, you have to get up there and get closeris it coming from one hole in the ground? From a bunch of seams in the rocks? Is there a sprinkler system up there?

The so-called fast solar wind, which flows at 500 to 1,000 kilometers per second, emanates from large holes in the corona near the suns north and south poles, reports Hannah Devlin at The Guardian. However, the origin of the slow solar wind, which is denser and travels at about half that speed, is not understood, explains atmospheric physicist Tim Horbury of Imperial College London, who is part of FIELDS research team.

During each swoop toward the sun, the probe passes about 15 million miles above a coronal hole for up to a week at a time to measure the solar wind and magnetic fields, according to a Berkeley press release.

Parker Solar Probe is also investigating a mystery that has long baffled solar physicists: the extreme heat of the outer atmosphere. The corona is a million degrees, but the suns surface is only thousands, Horbury tells Devlin. Its as if the Earths surface temperature were the same, but its atmosphere was many thousands of degrees. How can that work? Youd expect to get colder as you moved away.

Data from the spacecraft shows that the movement of plasma in the corona is extraordinarily complex. The measurements revealed that quick reversals in magnetic fields and fast-moving jets of plasma cause turbulence in the solar wind. The researchers dubbed one particularly dramatic type of magnetic field reversal a switchback.

As the solar wind flows away from the sun, the magnetic field lines would almost completely reverse for a few seconds or even a few minutes, causing abrupt changes in velocity. When the magnetic field snaps back to its previous orientation, it produces a spike in energy. While the researchers do not yet know what causes these magnetic reversals, the spacecraft's close observations will help them narrow down the possibilities.

These switchbacks are probably associated with some kind of plasma jets," Bale says in the Berkeley release. My own feeling is that these switchbacks, or jets, are central to the solar wind heating problem.

The Parker probe was able to measure solar wind while it was still rotating with the sun, finding that the speed and strength of the rotation was ten times more powerful than current solar models predict.

Because the sun rotates, solar wind travels on a curved path. But after the energy is flung into space, its path eventually straightens out. Finding out the exact point at which that energy starts traveling in a straight line will tell researchers about the lifecycles of stars and the workings of protoplanetary disks, which will improve our understanding of how planets form.

The probe also observed the suns dust-free zone. Our solar system is full of dust particles remaining from the planet-forming process that occurred over billions of years. Researchers long ago predicted that the heat of the sun could vaporize this dust into gas creating an area with much less dust. The probe has finally found supporting evidence of this phenomenon and researchers suspect it will likely encounter less and less dust as it swings closer to the sun.

Scientists also used the probes data to measure the outflow of electrons and ions that sometimes produce solar flares or coronal mass ejections (CMEs). So far, the Parker probe has recorded several new types of particles and ejection events that researchers are unable to observe from Earth, explains Princetons David McComas who leads the Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun suite of instruments.

Its amazingeven at solar minimum conditions, the sun produces many more tiny energetic particle events than we ever thought, says McComas in a NASA press release. These measurements will help us unravel the sources, acceleration, and transport of solar energetic particles and ultimately better protect satellites and astronauts in the future.

As Mike Wall at Space.com reports, this new data is really just a taste of what the probe will likely discover if its 4.5-inch-thick, carbon-composite shield can survive the remaining 21 dips closer and closer to the sun over the next five years. Eventually, the craft will fly as close as 3.83 million miles above the sun.

We knew we were going into a region we've never been before. It is a voyage of discovery, Nicola Fox, director of the NASAs Heliophysics Division, tells Nell Greenfieldboyce at NPR. It's going to the last sort of major region of our solar system to ever be visited by a spacecraft. And as we continue to get closer and closer, then I'm sure that we are going to continue to see more and more surprises."

A Billion Pixels and the Search for Indias Crashed Moon Lander – The New York Times

On Nov. 19, Mark S. Robinson opened an email with the subject line, Vikram Landers final resting place (Images with Proof).

Dr. Robinson is the principal investigator for the sharp-eyed camera aboard Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, a NASA spacecraft that has been mapping the moon for a decade, and he had received a lot of these emails since an Indian robotic spacecraft disappeared in September as it attempted to land on the moon.

But this one turned out to be the crucial clue in finding the missing lander, and on Monday NASA announced the location of the crash site, with photographs showing the scar on the moonscape.

The accomplishment was a triumph of crowdsourcing in modern space research, and pointed to the value of NASAs openness with its data and operations. Most of the data from American civilian space missions is freely available to both academics and curious amateurs, who were able to scour pictures from a NASA orbiter for signs of the Indian spacecraft.

By contrast, the Indian Space Research Organization, or ISRO, the agency that runs Indias space program, has been parsimonious in revealing what it knew about the fate of Vikram, which was part of Chandrayaan-2, a mission that launched in July. An accompanying orbiter continues to operate around the moon.

If Vikram had successfully made it to the surface, India would have become only the fourth nation to accomplish that feat. But as it descended, something went awry about a mile above the surface. Vikram shifted off course, then went quiet.

A day later, the Indian space agency posted on its website that it had already found the lander: Vikram lander has been located by the orbiter of Chandrayaan-2, but no communication with it yet.

This week, K. Sivan, ISROs director, dismissed the NASA announcement, repeating the claim that Vikrams location had been identified back in September.

However, the Indian space agency never released images or other data to corroborate the statement, nor did it share the coordinates of where Vikram supposedly sat on the moons surface. Only last month did the Indian government admit failure.

Thus, NASA and others looked for Vikram without ISROs help.

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which has been methodically mapping the lunar surface for a decade, happened to pass over the Vikram landing site 10 days after its crash.

Dr. Robinson and other camera scientists examined the images, but there were no obvious signs of Vikram. The high-resolution images encompassed about a billion pixels, and the small lander, if it were not hidden in the shadows, would be only a few pixels wide.

There was a huge search area, said Dr. Robinson, a professor of earth and space exploration at Arizona State University. There were five or six people who pitched in and spent a day.

They then returned to their more scientific tasks. It was interesting to do, Dr. Robinson said. There wasnt a lot of scientific value in it.

The orbiter made additional flyovers of the site on Oct. 14, Oct. 15 and Nov. 11, adding more pictures to analyze. The direction the spacecraft was pointing during the Nov. 11 flyover provided better lighting and sharper resolution in the images.

Amateur enthusiasts continued to examine the NASA images, and many claims of Vikram sightings landed in Dr. Robinsons inbox. For most, a quick before-and-after comparison with older photographs showed that the purported impact crater was already a feature of the lunar surface.

While NASAs openness has enabled many more eyes to look over the scientific data, the space agency, with management of its missions spread around the country, is not always diligent in following up on tips.

The November email came from Shanmuga Subramanian, a computer programmer and mechanical engineer living in the south Indian city of Chennai, who had already tried for a month to tell NASA what he thought he had found.

On Oct. 3, Mr. Shanmuga posted on Twitter a tiny white speck that was not visible in an older image, which he said he thought could be Vikram.

Two weeks later, he emailed Noah E. Petro, the project scientist for the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Five days later he followed up with Dr. Petro and John W. Keller, the deputy project scientist.

But it was only on the third email that he added Dr. Robinson, who forwarded the email to other scientists on the camera team, and they quickly found the crash site.

First, they confirmed that the speck Mr. Shanmuga identified was not there before September but was also visible in the October and November flybys. That ruled out the possibility that the speck was unlucky camera noise.

They then found changes in the brightness of nearby soil caused by bits of the moon flying upward and outward after the impact.

The pattern looked like a splash of water and pointed to where Vikram had slammed into the moon, about 2,500 feet to the southeast of the speck Mr. Shanmuga had seen. The speck turned out to be a piece of Vikram thrown out by the impact, and the scientists spotted other bits of wreckage.

The debris is spread out over a wide area, Dr. Robinson said.

While Indian authorities had initially suggested that the spacecraft could still be operational after a harder-than-designed landing, the images showed Vikram had disintegrated.

It wasnt a hard landing, Dr. Robinson said. It was a crash.

Dr. Robinson said it took a few days to carefully check the analysis before he informed Dr. Petro and Dr. Keller, who in turn told agency officials before Thanksgiving.

A NASA spokesman said that the release of the findings was coordinated with the Indian space agency. But the spokesman said ISRO did not share with NASA the coordinates of where it thought Vikram had ended up.

ISRO did not respond to questions about the claim that the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter had already located the lander in September.

Vikrams inadvertent strike of the moon reveals properties of the soil in the area that scientists would not have seen otherwise.

At the impact point, the surface became darker.

That material is not itself necessarily darker, but rather chunkier and thus casting more shadows, making it appear darker.

That tells something about the cratering mechanics, Dr. Robinson said.

Farther away, lighter-colored material emanates outward. The lighter streaks are not a coating of material thrown out by the impact but rather, the surface was smoothed out, making it more reflective and brighter, Dr. Robinson said. Seeing that could aid future studies of the moons surface.

Cloud Computing and Security: The Risks You Need to Know – TechDecisions

Cloud computing has become a valuable and increasingly popular approach to digital technology that includes on-demand self-service, broad network access, software as a service, and much, much more. As businesses continue to explore cloud options for a number of applications, its critical that they assess and align specific needs with the appropriate cloud vendor and service early in the cloud transition. Misaligning them, or underestimating cloud computing risks can spell trouble.

Clouds platforms and services available from technology giants including IBM, Google, Amazon, Salesforce, SAP and Oracle provide formats of IT service that offer users significant advantages over old-school, on-premises data centers.

For example, the users capital costs are lower and better matched to actual consumption; no hardware or software installations are required. Cloud-based IT infrastructure provides customers with rapid access to computing power whenever its needed.

Beyond that, the most significant misconception is that cloud services are protected 24/7 armies of security experts, making them virtually bullet-proof. That vision of an unimpregnable fortress, safeguarding client data against all adversaries, is comforting but its misguided.

Using cloud services actually carries its own set of risks risks that are unique to the cloud providers own operating environment, as well as other risks associated with traditional data centers.

Clients who dont recognize those risks and accept their own responsibilities for mitigating them, are almost as likely to experience data loss and compromise as they were before migrating to cloud operations.

Understanding and managing these shared cloud computing risks is key to successfully utilizing a cloud service. And it is equally important to recognize the cloud is not a monolithic concept; clouds vary both in who can use them and in what they do.

For one thing, just as in meteorological cloud formations, there are also different computing cloud configurations.

They include private clouds, which are hosted internally and used by a single organization; public clouds, which are commercial ventures available to the general public; community clouds which are only accessible to specific groups of users, and hybrid clouds which include elements of two or more such arrangements.

Cloud platforms and services are owned and operated by different companies, each with their own policies, prices, and resources.

There are also differences in the types of computing services they offer. Infrastructure as a Service, or IaaS, controls user access to computing resources servers, storage, network and so on which are actually owned by the client.

Platform as a Service, or PaaS, controls user access to the operating software and services needed to develop new applications.

The third and most popular cloud operations product is Software as a Service, or SaaS, which gives users direct access to the clients software applications.

For example, once theyre migrated to the cloud, client organizations lose a good amount of visibility and control over their assets and operations.

The monitoring and analysis of information about the companys applications, services, data and users never loses importance, but it will need to take a different form than it did when the clients own network monitoring and logging procedures were in place.

Before a clients data ever gets to the cloud, it travels across the internet. Unless the users network and internet channel are secure, powered by strong authentication standards and encrypted data, information in transit is susceptible to exposure.

Vulnerabilities in shared servers and system software used by public clouds to keep the data of multiple tenants separate can be exploited, enabling an attacker to access one organizations data via a separate organization and/or user.

Permanently removing sensitive data that a client wants securely deleted is difficult to confirm because of the reduced visibility inherent in cloud operations, which frequently includes data distributed over an assortment of storage devices. Any residual data can become available to attackers.

If a cloud service provider goes out of business or fails to meet your business and/or security needs, transferring data from that operator to another can be more costly in terms of time, effort and money than it was to initially become a subscriber. Additionally, each providers non-standard and proprietary tools can complicate data transfer.

Cloud operations are complicated by their technology, polices and their implementation methods. This complexity requires the clients IT staff to learn new ways of handling their information, because as complexity grows, so does the potential for a data breach.

Insider abuse has the potential to inflict even greater damage on the clients data than it did before due to the clouds ability to provide users with more access to more resources. Depending on your cloud service, the forensic capabilities needed to trace and detect any malicious insider may not be available.

The loss of stored data due to an accidental deletion or a physical catastrophe such as a fire or earthquake, can be permanent. A well thought out data recovery strategy needs to be in place, but the client and service provider must work together to establish a secure and effective process.

Managing user identities carefully controlling users identity attributes and regulating their privileged access remains an equally challenging task in cloud operations as it ever was in on-premises environments. Due to the nature of cloud services, the challenge in some cases can be much greater than in on-premises environments.

Providing appropriate levels of secure access for different user roles, such as employees, contractors and partners is critical to protecting your cloud environment, making Identity Governance a high priority when migrating to the cloud. Cloud computing and security should constantly be thought of as joined concepts, not separate silos.

Cloud operations provide a variety of valuable avenues to exploit. And while the childlike faith that cloud platforms and services are immune to malicious attacks may be touching, its simply not true. Vigilance is equally, if not even more important, than it was before migrating to the cloud.

We all know what is cloud computing. Today, we are going to learn about cloud computing vs fog computing. From the same makers of the Cloud, we get the fog. And no, its not about a Stephen King book, but about data processing in the limbus between hardware and network.

It may seem to some that I took the term out of my pocket just to invent a title. I was a little familiar with the general meaning of what we will explain next, but by reading How to Geek I discovered it was called Fog Computing. After reading many explanations that try more to sell me something than to illustrate the concept, I was convinced that it was something much simpler than it seems.

Consider cloud computing as an initial concept, as many already know what it means. All those computer services that are offered online, on the Internet, that involve a large network of computers connected to host the data of the software that users access without having to install anything. Cloud services concentrate and process everything on a central server and not on the users computer.

Granted, its a funny term. Fog computing is a model where data processing and applications focus on devices on the edge of the network and not entirely in the cloud. This allows data to be processed locally on an intelligent device instead of sending it to the cloud. This model is specifically designed to focus on the Internet of Things, all the new devices like your home thermostat or fridge that are now connected to the Internet.Such devices can transfer large amounts of data, and the idea of Fog Computing is to use the same device as an access point to increase the speed of data processing and thus relieve the cloud of some of the work for smoother and more immediate user experience. After all, who wants to wait 30 seconds for the refrigerator to know the condition of their vegetables?

On the other hand, some argue that current cloud computing already has all the elements of supposed fog computing and that it is just a marketing term to attract attention. And indeed, what is the cloud, but a metaphor for the Internet.

Some experts believe that the expected implementation of 5G mobile communications could create more opportunities for Fog Computing. 5G technology in some cases requires the installation of very dense antennas, and under certain circumstances, the antennas must be within 20 kilometers of each other. In such an application, a fog computing architecture could be created between these stations, including a central controller that manages applications running on this 5G network and manages connections to data centers or background clouds.

A fog computer fabric can have a variety of components and functions. It could also be Fog c, which are gateways that accept data from IoT devices. It could include a variety of wired and wireless granular collection endpoints, including rugged routers and switching devices. Other aspects could include the equipment of customer premises (CPE) and gateways for accessing edge nodes. Further up the stack, fog computer architectures would also affect central networks and routers, and ultimately services and servers in the global cloud.The OpenFog Consortium, the group that develops reference architectures, has defined three goals for the development of a Fog framework. Fog environments should be horizontally scalable, meaning that they support vertical use cases from different industries, can work from the cloud to the continuum of things and are a system-level technology that extends from things across the boundaries of the network to the cloud and across different network protocols.

Cloud computing surges in the UAE in 2019 – ComputerWeekly.com

The past 12 months has seen a rapid growth of cloud computing in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as suppliers race to set their footprints.

Microsoft and Oracle launched datacentres in the country in 2019, adding to existing UAE centres offered by SAP and Alibaba Cloud. Amazon Web Services (AWS) also unveiled its first Middle Eastern datacentre in nearby Bahrain in July.

SAP is the current front-runner in the Middle East race with three centres in the region in Dubai, Riyadh and Dammam, while Oracle opened its first datacentre in the Middle East in Abu Dhabi in February to offer cloud storage to customers across the region. In a show of serious intent, Oracle is set open two more datacentres in the UAE and two in Saudi Arabia within the next year.

Meanwhile Microsoft brought online its first datacentre regions in the Middle East in June this year, opening one in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Comparatively a smaller player, Alibaba Cloud cloud computing arm of the Chinese ecommerce giant opened its first regional datacentre in Dubai in 2016.

According to a recent YouGov survey of more than 500 IT decision-makers in the UAE, 88% planned to increase cloud spend in 2019, 83% are running partially or completely in the cloud in 2019, and nearly 90% expect cost savings on the cloud.

The public cloud services market in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is projected to grow to $1.9bn (AED7.97bn) by 2020, double what it was in 2016, according to data research firm Statista.

According to Jyoti Lalchandani, group vice-president and regional managing director for the Middle East, Turkey and Africa at IDC, the arrival of several new datacentres in the UAE in 2019 foretells a transformational year for the country.

Lalchandani told Computer Weekly: The fact that several tech suppliers have entered the UAE shows that there is a changing landscape. This trend shows there is a strong national focus on public cloud services. The datacentres are arriving in the region to fulfil the demand from local customers.

He noted that local companies are now moving their mission critical services to the cloud, which is evidence of growing trust in remote hosting centres. Very traditional organisations such as the Commercial Bank of Dubai have moved all their sensitive data to the cloud. I foresee other banks doing the same, he said.

As UAE cloud uptake grows, Lalchandani also predicted a heightened focus on security and regulations. With all these providers coming in, there might more regulatory frameworks put in place. I predict the government will become more involved in cloud regulations.

According to Zakaria Haltout, managing director at SAP in the UAE, 2019 has been a landmark year for cloud computing in the UAE.

Haltout said every industry vertical in the UAE is undergoing digital transformation through the cloud, especially sectors such as oil and gas, utilities, government, retail, passenger travel, and financial services. More and more public and private sector organisations are digitally transforming on the cloud, he said.

The SAP MD said the companys local cloud datacentre in the UAE is the centrepiece of its ongoingfive-year $200m UAE investment plan.SAP was the first multi-national business applications company to go live in the country and onboard customers with localised data centre solutions.

Haltout predicts continued and rapid cloud services growth in the UAE, particularly as local organisations embrace the experience economy and personalise customer experiences with cloud-based solutions, rather than merely selling products and services. UAE organisations that leverage customer experience solutions on the cloud are set to see the biggest business benefits, said Haltout.

He said the upcoming Expo 2020 Dubai will offer companies opportunities to experiment with cloud projects. The event, which will run on SAP to optimise processes and costs, is expected to deliver personalised experiences for 25 million visitors and 192 participating countries.

Looking ahead, Haltout said the biggest challenge for cloud take-up in the UAE lies in implementation issues.The biggest challenge is not in business vision for the cloud, but in its implementation. Channel partners play a key role in supporting UAE organisations to understand the business challenges that organisations face, and which cloud solutions best meet business needs.

According to Haltout, CIOs should work with channel partners to develop strategies for change management and skills development, to ensure that employees can optimise their cloud-based workplaces and business applications.

Jayakumar Mohanachandran, head of IT at Dubai-based packaging firm Precision Group, said many companies in the UAE are now ready to take advantage of cloud benefits, such as quick deployment of IT resources, shared resource usage, and the ability to monitor usage.

Mohanachandran, who is currently managing a large-scale digital transformation project at Precision Group,said cloud migration has enabled his firm to build a solid foundation for future growth plans.

Precision was running on a legacy system for more than 25 years and this migration has helped us to be more agile and flexible. Now all our employees can work from any part of the world and stay connected all the time with all their information available at their fingertips. Employees can manage, monitor or approve all requests through mobiles which is a huge transformation for us.

Santhosh Rao, senior director analyst, Gartner UAE, predicted that many more local companies will shift their data to UAE cloud centres.

We expect a steady stream of projects where enterprises engage advisors to come up with cloud migration strategies. The UAE is transforming from an oil economy to data economy, so there is a need to create new revenues streams such as artificial intelligence. Cloud is a really nice way to kick things off its a good way to start the transformation with less risk.

Microsoft is pushing forward with JEDI recruiting despite Amazon’s legal fight – CNBC

Microsoft is staffing up in preparation for its work with the Defense Department, even as Amazon is in court protesting the Pentagon's decision, according to people familiar with the matter.

In the more than six weeks since winning the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure, or JEDI, deal, which is worth up to $10 billion, Microsoft has been trying to lure talent from defense contractors and other companies and get employees the necessary authorization to work on the project, said the people, who asked not to be named because they're not authorized to speak on behalf of the company.

Amazon has contested the Pentagon's decision to award the contract to its smaller cloud rival, citing in a lawsuit a bias on the part ofPresident Donald Trump and repeated attacks against Amazon and CEO Jeff Bezos as evidence of an unfair process.

But Microsoft isn't slowing down. Brad Smith, Microsoft's president and chief legal officer, told CNBC on Saturday that "we have if anything been moving even faster since that contract was awarded."

Microsoft has a history with government contracts and has spent years going through the process of clearing employees for defense work, said two of the people. The company has hundreds of cleared engineers, one of the people said. But there are so many people in the pipeline that Microsoft faces an 18-month bottleneck getting current employees through the process, a different person said.

Microsoft's website lists more than 100 openings for people with security clearances, though none mention JEDI by name. Openings are for positions including principal software engineering managers and principal program managers. In January, Microsoft plans to hold two recruiting events in Reston, Virginia, near the headquarters of the Central Intelligence Agency in Langley.

"The Department of Defense is confident in the JEDI cloud contract award and remains focused on getting this critical capability into the hands of our warfighters as quickly and efficiently as possible," Pentagon spokesperson Elissa Smith said in an email. "The department's Cloud Computing Program Office continues to work with Microsoft to prepare the JEDI cloud environment."

A Microsoft spokesperson declined to comment.

As part of the internal recruiting process for Defense Department work, Microsoft regularly offers to pay for employee applications for security clearances, according to a person familiar with the process. The clearance brings with it a 20% to 30% salary increase, depending on the level of authorization and the employee's role, the person said, adding that not every employee will need clearance to contribute to JEDI.

According to a court filing that became public on Monday, Amazon and the Defense Department have agreed that there's currently no reason to ask the court for a restraining order because the Pentagon has said it "will not proceed with performance of the JEDI contract beyond initial preparatory activities" until Feb. 11, 2020, at the earliest.

The battle for JEDI has been hotly contested since 2018, when the Pentagon announced its plan for a $10 billion and 10-year upgrade to its IT operations. Amazon Web Services holds a commanding lead in cloud infrastructure, with 47.8% of the market, according to Gartner, and was widely considered the favorite to win JEDI, in part because of a big contract the company has had with the CIA since 2013. Microsoft Azure is a distant second, with 15.5% of the market.

In Monday's court filing, Amazon asserted there was a "fundamental defect" in the procurement process. Early on, according to Amazon, Pentagon staffers observed the strengths of AWS offerings, but their views became more negative over time as Trump's bias became more evident.

"This abrupt change in course reflects the culmination of President Trump's improper interference and express direction to officials responsible for overseeing the award of the JEDI contract," Amazon wrote.

AWS has a reputation for winning hesitant, often skeptical customers to the cloud. But for years now, the IaaS kingpin has faced a tough sell when trying to convince high performance computing practitioners to ditch their data centers.

The scientists and engineers that run those resource-demanding applications have long resisted Amazon's overtures: They are more comfortable deploying (and more often waiting to deploy) their compute intensive jobs on expensive mainframe supercomputers.

But AWS thinks it's finally found the formula for matching the elasticity of cloud computing with the scale-out capabilities required for high performance computing, Peter DeSantis, Amazon's vice president of global infrastructure and customer support, told attendees of a nighttime keynote that kicked off the AWS re:Invent conference last week in Las Vegas.

Over the last year, the goal to host "some of the most amazing and demanding workloads out there" has become reality, DeSantis said in an annual talk that provides a unique glimpse at the technical wonders of AWS infrastructure.

Advances in custom hardware, primarily networking, now enable HPC applications "to run on AWS the same as any other workload," DeSantis said.

As DeSantis dived deep into the innovations underpinning AWS' progress, Derek Magill, HPC solution architect at Flux7, a pioneering AWS partner that just launched an HPC practice, listened closely.

That DeSantis dedicated his highly anticipated re:Invent keynote to HPC in itself is an important signal to channel partners implementing the technology, Magill later told CRN.

"Not only do we believe it, but Peter DeSantis getting up there and spending an hour-and-a-half talking about HPC on AWS, I think it really validated our move to HPC," Magill said.

And DeSantis did a good job explaining how AWS has overcome the technological barriers that have kept HPC workloads on-premises.

"HPC people talk about how we're different and special and our needs can't be met by cloud," Magill said. But DeSantis keynote went far in knocking down some of their biggest excuses.
