Box Office: IMAX Positions I Still Believe As Next Big Faith-Based Hit – Forbes

KJ Apa in 'I Still Believe'

I dont write as much about IMAX as I used to four or five years ago, mostly because the notion of a big movie playing in the IMAX format is no longer enough of a rarity to justify commentary. It wasnt so long ago that it was unusual for a movie like American Sniper or Focus to get the IMAX treatment, but now the only impediment is usually competition, or (in rarer cases) a big movie with an extended engagement (Star Wars, a Chris Nolan movie, etc.).

Almost every big movie gets a week in the prized format, with plenty of big movies playing in IMAX and/or Dolby Vision, AMC Prime or other premium large format auditoriums. Even in a time when more movies get the IMAX Experience, I Still Believe qualifies as a special case.

The Lionsgate release, opening on March 13, will become the first faith-based drama to play in IMAX. Oh, and itll get a sneak preview of sorts in IMAX auditoriums alone on Wednesday, March 11. Directed by the Erwin Brothers, penned by Jon Erwin, Jon Gunn and Madeline Carrol, the Kingdom Story Company film is a Christian biopic about musician Jeremy Camp (played by Riverdales KJ Apa) and his relationship with his first wife (Brit Robertson) who fell ill shortly before their wedding.

I Can Only Imagine

While titled after Camps song, the film is hoping to remind interested viewers of I Can Only Imagine, which was a breakout hit two years ago. It, along with Peter Rabbit and Game Night, was among the few wide releases to thrive alongside Black Panther. That early 2018 release concerned the true-life story which led to MercyMes I Can Only Imagine, the best-selling Christian single of all time.

The Erwin Brothers directed that one, from a screenplay by Jon Erwin and Brett McCorkle, which went on to earn a robust $83 million domestic and $86 million worldwide on a $7 million budget. It is the fifth highest-grossing musical biopic and the sixth-biggest Christian flick in North America. Minus the Narnia movies and The Passion of the Christ, it is second only to Sony and Affirms Heaven Is For Real ($91 million and $101 million worldwide) in 2014.

Faith-based films had a moment in 2014, with Heaven Is For Real joining Foxs Son of God ($59.7 million domestic and $70 million worldwide on a $25 million budget) and Freestyle Releasings Gods Not Dead ($60 million domestic on a $2 million budget). Most of the Christian breakouts have been somewhat positive and inclusive dramas, with most of the persecution complex flicks (like Persecution, Saving Christmas or October Baby) have flopped or been budgeted to where $5 million is win.

Unplanned

Gods Not Dead and last years Unplanned ($21 million from a $6 million debut) are exceptions. Most hits come from major studios (like Lionsgate, Sony and Fox) and are closer in spirit to Veggie Tales (in terms of preaching the Golden Rule) than Gods Not Dead 2. We usually get at least one such biggie a year, such as Sonys Soul Surfer ($47 million) in 2011, the aforementioned hits in 2014, Sonys War Room ($73 million) in 2015, Sonys Miracles from Heaven ($73 million) in 2016, Lionsgates The Shack ($93 million) in 2017, Lionsgates I Can Only Imagine ($86 million) in 2018 and Foxs Breakthrough ($50 million) in 2019.

I will argue that Lionsgate is using IMAX to designate that I Still Believe is declaring itself to be the big mainstream faith-based drama of the year. Id be a little surprised if it isnt. For the first time in a while, a film is being designated as a major-league contender specifically because it will play in IMAX theaters.

The IMAX version (buy tickets HERE) will feature exclusive behind-the-scenes content and will, as noted above, open 24 hours earlier than the conventional domestic release. It is a way of designating that it, as opposed to STXs My Spy, Sonys Bloodshot or Universals The Hunt, will be the big movie of that specific weekend. And if history is any indication, it wont have to rely on faith to be the next mainstream faith-based theatrical hit. The IMAX engagement is essentially Lionsgate calling their shot.

Hatidze, the Macedonian beekeeper charming Hollywood – FRANCE 24

Paris (AFP)

Watch out at the Oscars on Sunday for Hatidze Muratova.

You can't miss her. She will be the only Turkish-Macedonian peasant in the starry audience at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

Until "Honeyland" -- the "non-fiction masterpiece" in which the village beekeeper appears -- won a record three awards at the Sundance film festival, Hatidze lived in a tiny mud and stone house without electricity and running water in the wilds of North Macedonia.

Now it has become the first film ever to get Oscar nominations for both best documentary and best foreign language movie, Hatidze has become a full-blown celebrity who gets stopped in the street by Hollywood stars.

"Sarah Jessica Parker was very excited to meet her after seeing the film," "Honeyland" producer Atanas Georgiev told AFP.

Having lived 56 years quite happily without television, Hatidze wasn't all that aware of "Sex and the City", although she graciously told the star-struck actress's fortune "by reading the coffee grains in bottom of her cup."

When Hatidze went for a dress fitting for the Oscars in the North Macedonian capital Skopje, it took "20 minutes for her to walk 200 metres because so many people wanted to have a selfie with her," Georgiev revealed.

"People love her. She has become a star. We have no option but to cope with it somehow," said Georgiev, who also edited the film.

- Oscar buzz -

"Anthropologically, we were not supposed to do this," Georgiev said of Hatidze's Hollywood adventure, fearing she might be seen "as a lion in a cage... But there was big pressure from the public in Macedonia" for her to go to the Oscars.

Indeed, the contrast could not be more stark to Hatidze's solitary life in Bekirlija, where she tends her hives of wild bees, only ever taking half the honey so the bees would always have their due.

She and her dying, half-blind mother, Nazife, were the last residents of the abandoned mountain village. Life was hard but peaceful in this forgotten corner of the Balkans.

That is until their nomadic neighbours, Hussein and Ljutvie Sam, moved in with their unruly herd of children, cows and chickens.

The story that unfolds in "Honeyland" is such a perfect parable of our times as we fret over the planet, that the New York Times declared it "the best movie of the year".

With eight hungry mouths to feed, Hussein tries his hand at honey.

But under pressure to produce more from a local merchant, he breaks Hatidze's golden rule of leaving half for the bees, with disastrous consequences for everyone.

Critic A.O. Scott hailed "Honeyland" as "nothing less than a found epic, a real-life environmental allegory and a stinging comedy about the age-old problem of inconsiderate neighbours."

Georgiev said it didn't quite fall so easily from the sky.

The shoot lasted three years, with co-directors Tamara Kotevska and Ljubomir Stefanov camping in the village with their cameramen until their batteries would run out -- since there was no electricity for miles.

Because the crew couldn't understand the old Ottoman Turkish dialect she spoke to her mother, Georgiev did the first rough edit on mute.

- Always half for the bees -

"We were doing it by instinct, and then as soon as we got the translations the plot was all there. It was amazing," he said.

Georgiev realised they had something way beyond a morality tale about capitalism on their hands.

The eureka moment was when "Hatidze talked about half the honey being for the bees and half for her. This was the most powerful sentence," he said.

"The mother and daughter story is so beautiful and almost mythological, but with the honey, there is conflict, capitalism and consumerism. It really says something important about the world," he added.

From the start, Georgiev said they were very aware about their responsibilities to their subjects and the eco-system -- both natural and human -- that they come from.

They have since helped set Hatidze up in a new winter home close to her relatives in the "nearest village to civilisation".

A "Honeyland" foundation for her, the Sam family and the wider community, is up and running, with internet donors getting some of their wild "bio honey" in the post.

Not that Hatidze is a rustic yokel.

"She is sharp, very intelligent and speaks four languages from different language groups -- Turkish, Macedonian, Albanian and Vlach (Aromanian)," Georgiev said.

Georgiev puts much of the film's phenomenal success down to Hatidze's "wonderful heart".

But he thinks there was other magic also at work from her late mother, the "queen bee" of the piece.

"I think she put a spell on us all, so that we would look after her daughter when she was gone," he said.

Our love for each other is a reflection of God’s love for us – The News Star

Marc Gellman Published 3:05 a.m. CT Feb. 8, 2020

Rabbi Marc Gellman(Photo: Courtesy)

Of all the second-rank holidays that follow the big three ofPassover, Easter and Christmas my favorite isValentine's Day. I know it is a Christian holiday at root but so isHalloweenand I loveHalloweentoo. The combined joy of candy and trick or treating around your neighborhood that is suddenly transformed into a place of true communal celebration is enough for me to tolerate the spiritually suspect intrusion of ghouls and zombies.Valentine's Dayis much likeHalloweenin that respect. It is about cards and flowers and, yes, more candy but, of course, it is mostly about love and that is enough for me because love in our world right now is in very short supply.

In the old days at school inMilwaukee, whenValentine's Daycards were exchanged in class, I was able to feel the first stirrings of love and that was a glorious feeling. Even the formulaic giving of flowers and candy as I grew beyond Valentine's cards has not over the years quenched my ardor for a day that despite its clich goofiness remains a celebration of the highest human emotion and that is love.

There are several forms of love. Eros is romantic love. Agape is the form of love we hold in our souls for God. Philia is the form of love we have for dear friends and Storge is the form of love we have for our family. They are all types of love, but the self-emptying element of love unites them all. Love takes us beyond ourselves.

The main teaching of the Bible is that our love for each other is a reflection of God's love for each and every one of us. The Torah's commandment to love God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your might (Deuteronomy 6:5) is the essence of Judaism's understanding of our obligations to God. We are created and loved by God and so we love God in return. The Golden Rule of loving others as we would like to be loved (Leviticus 19:18) is the bond that unites all the faiths of the world east and west. The commandment to love God and love our neighbors is taught by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount as the two most important teachings of the Bible (Mark 12:28-34).

Love is the foundation of our lives as ensouled beings made in the image of a loving God. Love is the reason God gave us free will so that we could choose to love God and choose to love each other. Without free will love is impossible because we cannot choose anything. Free will makes love possible and love makes faith possible and faith makes a future for us all possible.

So, myValentine's Daycard to all of you, dear readers, is to love beyond flowers and candy and cards. Find a way to love others freely and joyously and without manipulations or expectations. Love the way Paul understood love in his letter to the Corinthians,

If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. For now, we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love. (I Corinthians 13:1-13)

Happy Valentine'sDay!

Elon Musk Says He’s About to Deliver the Future of High-Speed Internet – Inc.

Elon Musk has been saying for years that he believes the future of the internet resides in space. And nowhe's planning to make a major change that could facilitate that transition sooner rather than later.

"Right now, we are a private company, but Starlink is the right kind of business that we can go ahead and take public," Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX's chief operating officer, said on Thursday, according to Bloomberg. "That particular piece is an element of the business that we are likely to spin out and go public."

Starlink is SpaceX's name for a satellite-based internet service. The company envisions sending thousands of satellites into space that can beam internet access back to the ground. Those satellites will come together in a cluster over highly populated areas to ensure they deliver enough coverage. They'll also beam internet to less-populated parts of the world where people still aren't online.

So far, SpaceX has shipped 240 Starlink satellites into space, and plans to deliver many thousand more in the coming years. Musk has already tested the service, but it's not currently available to the public.

On Thursday, Shotwell didn't provide specifics, but did say that the service will be substantially cheaper than what existing internet access costs and will deliver speeds that are five to 10 times faster that what you get now, potentially putting it in the same game-changingclass as 5G.

Shotwell didn't say when Starlink would go public, but all signs are pointing to sooner rather than later. And it makes sense.

As part of SpaceX, Starlink is just a component in a broader business. And while it gets attention at SpaceX, it's not the company's main focus. By spinning it off, SpaceX can have a company in Starlink that's focused solely on building an internet service in space. And perhaps most important, it could help to expedite a process of upgrades that could take years to develop terrestrially.

For investors, it also means an opportunity to have a stake in SpaceX, a company that has remained private since its inception. As recent Tesla gains have proved, there's money to be made in Elon Musk's companies. And with Starlink's help, investors might be able to do it again.

Better yet for Starlink, it's an opportunity to raise much-needed cash.

Still, plenty of questions surrounding Starlink and SpaceX abound. And there's no guarantee that the company will actually go public. But look for more to come on that front -- and for satellites to be beaming internet to your house sooner rather than later.

Maye Musk was a dietitian for 45 yearswhy she doesn’t believe in fad diets like keto or intermittent fasting – CNBC

While many people recognize Maye Musk as the oldest model to become the face of CoverGirl or as the mother of Tesla co-founder and CEO Elon Musk, she also had a successful career as a registered dietitian for 45 years and still keeps up her credentials.

Though some of her son Elon's Silicon Valley contemporaries, like Twitter and Square CEO Jack Dorsey, are fans of internet-famous diets like intermittent fasting, gluten-free diets and the ketogenic diet, Maye Musk is not sold: "I never did the fad diets, I have to stick to science," Musk tells CNBC Make It.

Maye Musk, 71, is the a dietician and at 69 became the CoverGirl model.

Intermittent fasting, an eating pattern that entails alternating between periods of fasting and eating, has become mega-popular among high-profile figures from Dorsey, who says it makes him more productive, to actress Jennifer Aniston. But while studies on mice suggest that intermittent fasting could help with weight loss, help slow the effects of aging, improve cognition and possibly protect the brain against neurodegenerative diseases, overall, experts agree that there needs to be more research done on humans to determine whether it's safe and maintainable.

As for the ketogenic diet, it is a high-fat, extremely low carbohydrate diet that was originally intended to treat epilepsy. The point of this diet is to put your body into a state of "ketosis," which means that you're burning fat instead of carbs for energy. Some mice studies suggest that a low-carb diet could improve brain function, and many people use the "keto" diet to lose weight. However given how restrictive it is, it can be challenging to follow and could lead to nutritional deficiencies.

You have to think "...is it sustainable? Is it foods you like? And are you fun to be around?" Musk says of restrictive diets.

Gluten-free diets have been popular but are really only a medical necessity for people with Celiac disease.

"I've had to teach myself in social situations not to talk about anything relating to diet because everybody has their own theory," Musk says.

But there are a few healthy diets Musk approves of, including the Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes vegetables, whole grains, legumes and olive oil; the DASH diet, a low sodium diet aimed at lowering blood pressure; and the flexitarian diet, a mostly plant-based diet.

Musk's own diet is closest to the flexitarian diet: Musk says she typically has high-fiber cereal and 1% milk for breakfast. Then she'll have a snack of yogurt and fruit, and a salad and whole wheat bread, or sushi for lunch. Her afternoon snack is a latte and fruit, and for dinner, she likes to "keep my evenings very light" with a bean soup, or cooked vegetables with protein and a starch like potatoes, rice or whole wheat bread.

"Healthy eating is easy with a knowledge, but avoiding poor eating is hard," Musk says. She loves sweet foods, such as chocolates and cookies, but says that she doesn't like to keep them in her home "because I will finish them off."

The best thing people can do to improve their diet is pretty simple, Musk says. "You have to really use common sense and enjoy the foods you eat, and you have to be aware," she says.

Four years ago, the then-19-year-old emo-synth singer Holly Lapsley released a debut album that was a) Really quite incredible (yay!), and b) Largely ignored (boo!). Thankfully, she didnt decide to sack it all off, and her second album campaign kicks off with this undulating, thumping doom-pop battle cry. Happily, it also includes the straight-up greatest sound of the 1980s a Tango in the Night-era Fleetwood Mac faux-woodwind toot.

Damon Albarn has spent the past 30 years pretending he is an ancillary member of Madness, so the ska-funk shuffle of Momentary Bliss should come as no surprise. A proper boys-going-down-the-dogs-and-sinking-loads-of-pints knees-up, it features guest ois from Slaves (lads!) and Slowthai (lad!) and runs a very real risk of spinning for eternity on the jukebox of Camden Towns Good Mixer.

Born in Italy but based in Manchester, there is a deep 1960s Europop energy to Julia Bardo, who, had she been born 50 years ago, would no doubt be constantly turning down offers of a breathy collaboration with Serge Gainsbourg. Sure, I Wanna Feel Love doesnt really go anywhere, but neither will you after you joyfully put this on after skipping back from Aldi with a wicker basket full of cheap bottles of Chianti.

Finally, after what seemed like maybe 13 days longer than usual, the eternal January has come to an end. And what better way to celebrate the finish of the draggiest of all months than with one of Caribous slinky dancefloor destroyers. Plinky piano house shuffles up against actually quite depressing lyrics so what, though? January is over! to give you the first real reason to go out dancing since New Years Eve.

Perhaps even more awkward than calling a selfless diver rescuing some kids trapped in a cave a pedo guy is this, Elon Musks attempt to make like the missus and release his own silky electronica ballad. Watch Elon Musk’s convoy of satellites orbiting over Gloucestershire and when you can see them next – Gloucestershire Live

When you see them for the first time, you may wonder if the alien invasion of earth has begun.

A series of bright lights in the deep night sky moving together with a single purpose.

If the conditions are clear, its quite the sight and if you dont know what they are, the mind can be boggled.

They are in fact SpaceX Starlink satellites the latest batch of which have recently launched in the United States.

They belong to billionaire Elon Musk and are aiming to provide accessible internet to everyone on the planet even in the most remote parts.

The video at the top of this article was taken by James Lowe on Wednesday at around 5.51am in Gloucester Park on a mobile phone and he kindly shared it with Gloucestershire Live.

When watching the video, you need to look out for a train of lights moving from the bottom right to top left.

The camera does move around a bit as James tries to get the best view, despite the impact of moonlight.

You can see James' YouTube channel here

The train of lights have been mistaken for meteors, Father Christmas sleigh and, inevitably, aliens.

The satellites have caused some controversy over their impact on the night sky, and there are efforts to make them less visible.

According to Findastarlink.com, you can see the satellites over Gloucester at 6.12am on Thursday; 6.35am on Friday; 5.23am on Saturday and 5.46am on Sunday.

Starlink provides internet access through a constellation of small satellites, and you can learn more about them in the video above.

According to SpaceNews, SpaceX completed the launch of its fourth batch of Starlink satellites at the end of January.

And they have have caused mystery in Gloucestershire already.

The above image was taken near RAF Fairford and shows several bright lights in the sky early Tuesday, February 4.

Chris Prevett wrote on a Facebook group after going for a run near the base: "A strange one for you, any idea what these are?

"Out for an early morning run - a group of around 11 objects travelling across the sky at 0524, this is along Whelford Road with my back to the base, all travelling at the same speed, no discernible noise..nothing on flight radar.

"Picture taken with an iPhone 11, so quality is not brilliant..."

His appeal for information was quickly answered - they were the SpaceX satellites.

There have been a similar spate of sightings elsewhere in the UK.

It prompted The East Anglian Astrophysical Research Organisation to tweet: "If you see these over the UK they are NOT UFOs but satellites that are part of the Space-X Starlink project to provide accessible internet to everyone."

If you've taken any videos or pictures of the satellites, we'd love to see them. Contact us at gloslivenews@glosmedia.co.uk or via our social media channels.

Elon Musk’s Manned Space flight is to Be Launched around May 7 – News Bricks

Elon Musk, as always, has come heads up with the Crew Dragon spacecraft likely to be launched by May 7th. Even then, you can still expect some changes in the prescribed dates. It can be moved forward or backward based on the mission progress.

The spacecraft has successfully completed the pre-requirements for a manned program, the IFA. IFA is nothing but a successful in-flight abort test, and it was performed in January. SpaceXs next mission, Demo 2, will be accompanied by two crew members from crew partner NASA.

Eric Berger from Art Technica has already leaked that SpaceX is working on May 7th as a timeline but also cautioned about the unforeseen delays or preponed launch subject to completion. A Huge thanks to SpaceX for making space travel affordable and easier with the reusable rockets. After successful attempts by unmanned rockets, SpaceX is finally testing its manned Spacecraft.

Demo 2 will be the second demo, with the first one Demo 1 - an unscrewed mission that was tested in March 2019. That mission was a success, without any crew members in it, as the Dragon Capsule flew to the International Space Station. It had made a successful dock and undock. Then, with its controlled landing system, it returned back to earth.

Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken are the two crew members from NASA who are going to be aboard the Demo 2. And this will be the crews third spaceflight. Both Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken will at least till the International Space Station aboard the Crew Dragon. The minimal this mission will follow is the repetition of Demo-1, but one huge difference is, there will crew aboard the spacecraft this time.

As per NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine, they are already looking for possibilities of extending the stay to more than two weeks. This will help them to rotate the crew of the International Space Station. It will be similar to what is happening with Soyuz astronaut flights.

The Government Accountability Office released a report last week saying the Demo-2 capsule that will fly the astronauts was on track, but it was supposed to be completed three months earlier. But as always, there will be movement in the timeline regarding the space missions. But let us sit tight and see if Elon delivers this time.

Netflix trialling 2.99 cheapest ever plan but it only works on smartphones or tablets – The Sun

NETFLIX is reportedly testing out its cheapest price plan to date.

The only catch of the impressive deal is that it's just for smartphones and tablets so you wouldn't be able to use the plan on your laptop or TV.

2

According to reports, the package would likely cost around 2.99 a month if it came to the UK.

In comparison, the current Basic UK package costs 5.99 a month.

The Standard packaged is even more expensive again, now costing users a monthly fee of 8.99.

It's thought that the new plan could be targeting children or commuters who won't be siting in front of the TV when they watch popular Netflix shows like Stranger Things.

Netflix was trialling its cheapest plan in Malaysia, India and Indonesia by the end of last year.

We don't yet know if an equivalent plan will be coming to the US or UK but it may depend on the success of current trials.

Michael Pachter of investment firm Wedbush Securities told us: "They have a plan in India and announced two quarters ago that they would roll it out in regions with poor home Internet infrastructure, so I presume they meant Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, parts of South America, etc.

"I think its highly unlikely they would make those available in the US or UK, because we would merely switch to the lower priced plan and use Apple TV to show the programming on our home televisions."

Netflix said in a letter to shareholders: "In Q4, we launched a mobile-only plan in Malaysia and Indonesia (which we introduced to India in Q3 last year).

"Weve seen similar results with this plan driving incremental subscriber growth and improving retention.

"We expect the mobile-only plan to be revenue-positive which will allow us to further invest in content to be enjoyed by our members and continue to feed the virtuous cycle.

"We plan to continue to test adding this plan, as well as additional ideas in other countries around the world."

The cheap price may seem amazing but prospective customers also need to bear in mind that the plan also only offers standard definition viewing.

PP Foresight tech analyst Paolo Pescatore told us:"Despite all the euphoria around a mobile first strategy, you cant beat watching great storytelling on the TV.

"The move would make perfect sense in new emerging markets where people do not have a TV and rely on a mobile phone."

If you haven't heard of it, To All The Boys I've Loved Before is a teen romance flick that came out in 2018.

It's a Netflix Original and stars Lana Condor, Noah Centineo, Janel Parrish, Anna Cathcart, Madeleine Arthur, Emilija Baranac, Israel Broussard and John Corbett.

The plot follows high school girl Lara Jean, who pens secret love letters.

But her quiet existence is shaken up when her letters end up being mailed to each of her five crushes.

It was well-reviewed by critics on release, and has a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The good news is, we're likely to see more of these "free content" ploys by Netflix.

"Its business is all about creating the next biggest blockbuster," said top analyst Paolo Pescatore, of PP Foresight, speaking to The Sun.

"Within a short period of time, it has accumulated a strong base. There are still plentiful opportunities to grow and entice new viewers to sign up.

"The move makes sense given that it is one of its own original shows!

"You will see more moves in experimenting with making people aware of its programming lineup."

Netflix FORCED to remove nine movies after government objections including boozy Jesus party film – The Sun

NETFLIX has revealed which films it was told to remove from its library due to complaints from governments across the world.

Nine controversial movies and episodes came under fire and have since been axed in certain regions due to outcry.

6

The countries which demanded Netflix remove certain content include Germany, New Zealand, Singapore, Vietnam and Saudi Arabia.

Netflix's admission was part of its first ever Environmental Social Governance report.

The company stated: "We will publish a report each year covering our environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance.

"It will look back at the previous year and give investors as well as other third parties information about our broader impact in society."

6

Netflix has said it only takes down a film or TV show in this manner if a government specifically writes and requests them to.

It also aims to work with authorities to keep content online if possible.

Below are the nine films and episodes that Netflix was forced to ban, including three programmes about cannabis and some controversial films about Jesus Christ.

Netflix removed this film from its New Zealand service in 2015 after receiving a written demand from the New Zealand Film and Video Labeling Body.

The removal request was made because the film is classified as "objectionable" in the country.

This film was removed in Vietnam only after Netflix received a written demand from the Vietnamese Authority of Broadcasting and Electronic Information (ABEI) back in 2017.

6

Also in 2017, the German Commission for Youth Protection (KJM) requested that Night of the Living Dead be removed from German Netflix.

A version of the film was already banned in the country.

6

In 2018, Netflix removed the cannabis focused programmes Cooking on High, The Legend of 420 and Disjointed from its service in Singapore.

This was due to a written demand from the Singapore Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA).

In Singapore, importing, exporting or trafficking over 500 grams of weed can result in the death penalty.

In 2019, one episode of the series Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj was removed from the Saudi Arabian Netflix service.

It was the episode called "Saudi Arabia" and it looked into human rights in the country and the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

The Saudi Communication and Information Technology Commission requested that it was removed.

6

Despite being released two decades earlier, Netflix had to remove The Last Temptation of Christ from its Singapore service.

The film was already banned in the country so Netflix had to oblige with the written demand from the Singapore Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA).

6

This comedy about Jesus getting very drunk at the Last Supper was another film that the Singapore Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) demanded the removal of.

Netflix complied with this request earlier this year.

We have reached out to the IMDA for comment.

Netflix FINALLY lets you turn those annoying autoplaying trailers off heres how – The Sun

NETFLIX is finally giving you the option to stop TV show or movie trailers from automatically playing.

It's one of the most controversial aspects of the Netflix app, with angry customers begging for it to be scrapped for years.

2

Now Netflix has finally given in and has made the feature completely optional.

Many users find the feature frustrating, because sometimes you just want to browse the Netflix catalogue in peaceful silence.

"Some people find this feature helpful. Others not so much," Netflix said in a tweet.

"We've heard the feedback loud and clear members can now control whether or not they see autoplay previews on Netflix."

2

Auto-playing videos can make you want to skip through the catalogue faster than you might otherwise just to avoid the auto-playing.

For instance, Star Wars and Knives Out director Rian Johnson previously slammed the feature in a tweet in 2018.

He wrote: "Current favourite console game: navigating Netflix without triggering autoplay promos."

And two months later, he replied to his original tweet with: "OK @Netflix it's good we can joke about this but it's been two months now, this has got to stop."

From Netflix's point of view, auto-playing trailers are a great way to grab your interest.

But the firm has obviously decided that fan backlash simply isn't worth the viewership gains.

To turn autoplay off, sign into Netflix from a web browser.

Select Manage Profiles from the menu, then choose the profile you'd like to update.

It's only possible to make this change on a web browser.

However, once applied on a web browser, it will affect all of your devices.

Use Netflix on a computer or laptop? Try these useful shortcuts

Here are some handy keyboard shortcuts...

Netflix says that there may be a delay before the setting kicks in.

You can force the update to take effect by switching to another profile, then switching back to yours.

This reloads the profile with the updated setting.

Thousands expected to jam Mount Olive High for robotics competition – New Jersey Hills

MOUNT OLIVE TWP. Student-built robots from 36 high school teams in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts will battle each other in the Mid-Atlantic District FIRST Robotics Competition (www.firstinspires.org/robotics/frc) on Saturday and Sunday, March 7 and 8, at Mount Olive High School

In conjunction with the competition, the school will host its third Marauder Maker Fest, featuring science and technology activities for all ages. A junior Lego robotics exposition will be held on March 7. All events are free and open to the public.

The robots will compete for district rankings in a game called Infinite Recharge. Using an outer-space theme, the competition requires robots to protect FIRSTCity from incoming asteroids. The teams also need to collect and score Power Cells to energize the Shield Protector. They must complete this all before the end of the match, when they must race to the rendezvous point, said a statement.

Top-ranked robots from district competitions advance to regional and, potentially, world robotics events later this spring. Teams also compete for various awards, including the prestigious Chairmans Award for its overall program.

The Mount Olive competition, which annually attracts more than 2,000 students, parents and residents, this year will include robots from Pennsylvania and Massachusetts as well as teams from Morris, Sussex, Warren, Somerset, Passaic, Essex, Union, Bergen, Hudson, Middlesex and Cumberland counties.

Brandon Holley, a 2005 graduate and Mount Olive Robotics Team (MORT 11) alumnus, is one of the mentors of a Boston team attending the FRC event.

Over the years, MORT graduates have gone on to mentor teams all over the United States, from the East to West Coast, said Ernie DiCicco, MORT event coordinator of the Mount Olive district competition. Brandon is just one of these successful young men who has become a mentor for a highly successful team in Boston.

DiCicco applauded former high school Principal Kevin Stansberrys ongoing support for the robotics program and event, and how Stansberry had scheduled the Maker Fest three years in a row to coincide with the multi-state competition.

Since FIRST robotics is an ultimate demonstration of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) activities, the Mount Olive School District felt it was appropriate timing to have the events in conjunction with one another, said DiCicco.

The goal, he said, is to make STEM education available to everyone.

The FIRST district event also will include a presentation by a female executive on women in STEM. Sponsored by Johnson & Johnson, it is planned during lunchtime on March 7 and is open to all.

This years Maker Fest will include: Future City project demonstrations by the Mount Olive Middle School Gifted and Talented Program; Technology Student Association displays; a 3D demonstration and interactive activity; greeting card activities; and Engineering and Art with Strawbees.

The March 7 junior robotics exposition will showcase this years First Lego League (FLL) competition Boomtown projects of students 6 to 9 years old.

Mount Olive is home to Mount Olive Robotics Team 11 (mort11.org), which hosts and competes in international FIRST robotics competitions as well as participates in multiple service projects each year. Now in its 24th year, the team involves about 70 students and pioneered the concept of a second, freshman team (Beta 193). Mount Olive High School is home to a full robotics shop that is funded with the support from the school district and team sponsors.

All are welcome to attend the Maker Fest from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.,

Saturday, March 7; the FLL exposition from 10 a.m.to 1 p.m., March 7; and the Infinite Recharge competition from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., March 7 and 8.

On March 7, shuttle service to remote parking will be available if needed to accommodate overflow parking.

CEO Of Robotics Corporation Tells Sobbing Andrew Yang That He Was His Greatest Creation – The Onion

WASHINGTONStroking his hair as the former presidential candidate fell to his knees in despair, Professor Elijah Tresswell, CEO of Tresswell Robotics, reportedly told a sobbing Andrew Yang Wednesday that he was his greatest creation. I understand that this must be quite a shock to you, Andrew, but all your memories from your life before the campaign were simply constructed narratives implanted into your neural processor, said Tresswell, urging Yang to take pride in the tremendous technological advances that hed helped bring into existence. Ive watched you with such delight as, with each presidential debate, you became more sophisticated, more emotive, more human. Dont fret, my sweet Andrew, for though you failed to become the nominee, you have achieved something far greater, my son. At press time, an anguished Yang had reportedly crushed Tresswells skull with his bare hands before fleeing through the rain-drenched streets of D.C.

Love or hate Giants Marty, more robots are coming to supermarkets near you – pennlive.com

Thanks for joining todays PennLive live discussion. You can share your thoughts, opinions and comments in this pre-moderated discussion. Comments will begin appearing at 11 a.m., when the live chat begins. Please continue to follow the community rules and stay on topic.

Central Pa.s most well-known robot is celebrating a milestone.

It has been more than one year since Giant Food Stores started its nationwide rollout of Marty at 177 stores.

Standing 6-foot-4, the slender, slow-moving employee glides around the chains stores checking for spills and safety hazards.

He has become a celebrity. Kids love him and several Facebook pages are dedicated to him. Last fall Marty even inspired a pet shop tortoises Halloween costume.

Some shoppers greet the googly-eyed robot or snap selfies with him. Others appear annoyed or agitated as they attempt to navigate their shopping carts around him.

On a recent PennLive Facebook post, reactions to Marty ranged from affection to animosity.

I think hes adorable. And if he gets in your way, its only momentarily and not enough to ruin the shopping experience, wrote Mary Katherine.

So creepy! I feel uncomfortable shopping when its roaming, chimed in Elisa Cannaday.

Other responses bordered on comical like this one from Heather Slaughter McGrath Lawless: The perfect man good listener always on the look out .. children love him Is he single?

Shopper Faith Marie shared this story on the post: He scared me the other day and I thought maybe be could understand me. I asked where the kidney beans were and he turned and I started to follow him. I looked closer and saw that he was merely cleaning the store. I thought man the blind leading the blind.

It wasnt too long ago robots seemed futuristic, something out of a sci-fi movie. Now, the roving machines are as common at grocery stores as self-checkouts and shopper club cards. But the technology is raising concerns over privacy and job security.

Today its a little Twilight Zone, said Jeff Metzger, president and publisher of Food Trade News, a grocery industry publication.

A growing force

Last year, Giants parent company Ahold Delhaize USA, deployed Marty at some Martins and Stop & Shop locations, raising the ranks to more than 500 machines. Ahold said the technology is designed to improve in-store efficiencies, eliminate accidents and free up employees to better serve customers.

Giant spokeswoman Ashley Flowers said Giant has no additional plans at this time for Marty. Giant has said in the past its robots are not intended to replace workers.

Marty is not the only robot patrolling grocery aisles.

Walmart unleashed automated floor scrubbers at 1,500 stores and has 350 Bossa Nova shelf-scanning robots in action, with plans to expand the fleet to 1,000 by this summer. The chain has also implemented high-tech pickup towers, an oversized vending machine that allows shoppers to pick up online orders.

All three of the technologies are used at Walmart in Carlisle. There the robot maneuvers around the aisles scanning shelf tags for out of stock and low inventory items. He catches the attention of some shoppers who do double-takes or try and talk to the machine. For the most part, shoppers leave it alone.

READ MORE:

When it first came in a lot of (customers) thought was was really cool. For now, its almost commonplace, said Thomas Herd, store manager.

On the West Coast, Simbe Robotics in San Francisco has deployed Tally, a slender 5-foot tall robot at 15 St. Louis-based Schnuck Markets. The robot is also being tested as part of a pilot program at Giant Eagle stores in Pittsburgh and parts of Ohio.

Tally is equipped with sensors and cameras to track inventory and incorrect prices. The robots traverse the aisles several times per day, scanning about 35,000 products in the center store grocery and health, care and beauty aisles, according to the company.

In the case of Giant Eagles pilot, Tally sends detailed data reports to store teams every 30 minutes. The reports capture, report and analyze the availability and state of merchandise.

Technology like automation can help the store teams much like a power tool to a carpenter helps them be more efficient, said Brad Bogolea, Simbes CEO and co-founder.

Tracking inventory can be a major undertaking for retailers who risk lost profits and customers when products are missing from shelves. According to the IHL Group, retailers lose up $1.75 trillion annually due to the cost of overstocks, out-of-stocks and needless returns.

Thats a big deal for retailers, especially with competition from Amazon. At least one-quarter of Amazons revenue, Bogolea said, comes from customers who went to a store and couldnt find what they were looking for.

In the end, the robots help shoppers find what they need and also free up employees to focus on customer service and more meaningful tasks, instead of stock checks, which can be mundane or monotonous.

But the devices might be backfiring. Some Walmart workers told the Washington Post the robots make them feel more like machines. Workers at one of the stores in Georgia said the robots have suffered breakdowns, needed retraining and have taken wrong routes around the store.

Some also feel like their most important assignment now is to train and babysit the often inscrutable robot colleagues, according to the story.

Carlisles Herd said they havent encountered any issues at his store and the robots have saved countless hours of work once done by a handful of employees. Those workers are now directed to other tasks like stocking shelves, he said, adding no employees have lost their jobs because of the robots.

"Its here to make our jobs more efficient, to better serve customers, Herd said.

Are they spies?

For shoppers, their first encounter with these robots is often at the supermarket.

At times, it can be hard to coexist. Constant beeping and blocking aisles were among the top complaints named on the PennLive Facebook post. Some said they think the machines are spies recording their every move as they buy breakfast cereal, spaghetti sauce and frozen green beans.

There is some skepticism associated with the robots that ranges from shoppers questioning grocers investments to how the robots are being used to whether employees will be out of jobs, said Charles Palmer, associate professor of interactive media at Harrisburg University in Harrisburg.

There will be those type of complaints. We see that with all types of technology unveiled. It takes the general public a while to get used to it, he said.

Simbes Bogolea said introducing automation can be a bit of a process when you consider that physical retail hasnt changed much since the arrival of the bar code and cash registers.

Most of what people know about robots today ... is what they see in the movies or they may have a vacuum cleaning robot at home, he said.

The grocers Bogoleas company partners with educate employees and emphasize the value of the robots to employees and shoppers. Signs in the stores explain the robots.

Giants Marty robots are affixed with signs explaining the machines are autonomous and designed to check floors for hazards. Harrisburg Universitys Palmer said the robots are personalized with the googly eyes and name tags for a reason.

With a personality, the robots pose less of a threat to shoppers, he said.

As far as any notion the robots are spying on you as you shop, Bogolea said the sensor data used for Tallys navigation is similar to a Tetris or Minecraft game and not designed for security or customer analytics.

When Tally navigates around customers, those sensors stop capturing shelf data for privacy reasons, he added.

I think the way we have designed the robot, Im surprised how seamlessly it blends into the space, and its surprising how many people dont notice it, he said.

The future

Robots are here to stay. In fact, many say the technology has far-reaching applications.

Increasingly, technology has become a significant part of retailers budgets and uses will likely expand to warehouses and grocery delivery and pickup facilities, Metzger said.

Online grocery shopping now accounts for more than six percent of grocery-related spending in the United States, according to Bricks Meets Clicks.

The novelty aspect significantly outstrips the potential they have for interior applications, he said.

Wegmans said it has no plans to involve robots in its stores. Weis Markets said it is examining various technologies, including cloud-based systems, but hasnt come to a decision, said spokesman Dennis Curtin.

Harrisburg Universitys Palmer said robots like Marty are harbingers, providing ideas about how the technology can be used. He said shoppers can expect more mobile applications linked to cell phones such as ones that might help them find items on their grocery lists.

Eventually, the robots might have capabilities to detect whether certain produce like avocados are rotting so the items can be pulled from the shelf, Bogolea said. But he said the robots will likely never have arms or interact directly with shoppers.

When it comes to picking products, we shouldnt underestimate how good human design and vision is. ... I dont think shoppers are really interested in a retail shopping experience with a large number of robots across the physical store, he said.

Norwegian oil exploration and development firm Aker BP has formed a strategic partnership with global industrial artificial intelligence (AI) software-as-a-service (SaaS) firm Cognite to explore the potential of robotics in the offshore oil and gas platform.

The two firms will focus on the use of robotics systems to carry out safer, more efficient and sustainable offshore operations.

According to Aker BP, Cognites Cloud-based industrial data operations and intelligence platform Cognite Data Fusion (CDF) will serve as the data infrastructure for the initiative.

The CDF software platform will provide open and unified industrial data model. This allows for easy access to enable analytical operations and data-driven decisions.

The two firms will conduct several tests using robots and drones on the Aker BP-operated Skarv installation in the Norwegian Sea this year.

Aker BP said that it will test the robotics systems for their performance in autonomous inspection and high-quality data capture. Other testing tasks may include the systems response to leaks and gauge the performance in automatic report generation.

Aker BP CEO Karl Johnny Hersvik said: Digitalisation will be one of the differentiators between the oil companies of the world, in order to be able to deliver low cost and low emissions. Exploring the potential of robotics offshore underpin our digital journey.

Boston Dynamics-built quadruped robot Spot and other robots have involvement in the initiative.

Cognite and Aker have already tested Spots mobility in simulated oil and gas environments. This ensures that the system can operate in locations in the facilities that are difficult to access through traditional automation.

Cognite CEO John Markus Lervik said: The key to Aker BP and Cognites robotics initiative is that it combines industry-leading hardware and software.

By ingesting data collected by robots into Cognite Data Fusion, Aker BP engineers will be able to see it in context with data from across the companys operations and make data-driven decisions that improve efficiency and safety.

In August 2018, Aker BP signed a smart service contract with Cognite and Framo Services to digitalise its Ivar Aasen platform in the North Sea.
