Dishonest Comparisons Between the Second Amendment and Government Funded Education – AmmoLand Shooting Sports News

From Twitter, cropped by Dean Weingarten

U.S.A. -(Ammoland.com)- Writing in the Atlantic, Aaron Tang, Professor of law at the University of California, creates a profoundly misleading comparison of the Second Amendment with a fabricated entitlement to an education.

Tang attempts to make the case that Second Amendment supporters and proponents of a theory the Constitution guarantees a right to an equally funded state education are rough equivalents.

There are minimal similarities in the arguments: a basic right implies a level of supporting rights. You cannot have effective Second Amendment rights without access to ammunition and a place to train. You cannot have an effective right of the press without the ability to own and operate media. You cannot have religious freedom without preventing the government from closing down churches and stopping private choices of conscience.

Tang claims the argument that the right to vote implies the entitlement to a state-funded education is equivalent to the argument by Second Amendment supporters that the enumerated right to keep and bear arms implies the right to have access to firing ranges. From the article:

So what do the gun activists argue? Its worth reproducing this argument from their brief verbatim, with emphasis added to a single word: The right to possess firearms for protection implies a corresponding right to acquire and maintain proficiency in their use after all, the core right to keep and bear arms for self-defense wouldnt mean much without the training and practice that make it effective. The Second Amendment may say nothing about the right to practice at a shooting range of ones choosing, in other words, but that right ought to be recognized implicitly because it is important for an express constitutional right to have full meaning.

Now consider the argument advanced by advocates of a constitutional right to basic literacy. Like gun activists and their right to firearms training, educational-equity advocates recognize that the Constitution says nothing explicit about education. But surely a guarantee of basic literacy skills must be implicit in the document in order for its express rights to have meaning. As the Gary B. complaint puts it, without access to basic literacy skills, citizens cannot engage in knowledgeable and informed voting, cannot exercise their right to engage in political speech under the First Amendment, and cannot enjoy their constitutionally protected access to the judicial system including the retention of an attorney and the receipt of notice sufficient to satisfy due process.

In order to reach this plausible-sounding bit of sophistry, Tang overlooks obvious, blatant differences.

The most obvious and fundamental difference, is no one is claiming the State must pay for Second Amendment training, the creation of ranges, or pay the costs of Second Amendment supporters who use those ranges. The Second Amendment arguments are all about stopping the state from preventing the exercise of Second Amendment rights. The Second Amendment arguments are all about limiting the power of the government to interfere with Second Amendment rights.

An equivalent right to education already exists in the First Amendment, with the right to free speech, freedom of the press, and freedom of religion. The government is not allowed to prevent you from becoming educated.

On the other hand, the proponents of education equality are demanding more power for the state. They are demanding the government provide state-run schools. They are demanding the government take from some taxpayers and give money to other taxpayers, to fund what they demand.

They demand an expansion of government power and authority, exactly the opposite of Second Amendment supporters.

You cannot teach students who are unwilling to learn. Access to basic literary skills already exists. If students want to learn, there are numerous, relatively inexpensive means for them to learn. Parental attitudes are far more important than funding. Some low funded schools produce excellent results and well-educated students. Some high funded schools produce horrible results and poorly educated students. Many students are taught at home, with excellent results.

Government-funded and run ranges are not required to exercise Second Amendment rights. They may be desirable. They are likely useful. They are not required.

Government-funded and run schools are not required for people to be literate and vote. People were literate and voted long before government-funded and run schools became the norm.

The arguments both use the word implied. The arguments have almost no similarity after that.

Federal government funding of schools has far more to do with creating a government-funded propaganda arm for the Democrat party, and funds for the Democrat party via teachers unions, than it has with creating literate citizens.

Government-funded schools may be desirable. They are likely useful. They are not required. Federally funded government schools are a recent development.

Professor Tang creates the illusion of equivalency of arguments with the assumption that a right to freedom from government interference is equivalent to an entitlement to government largess.

The Second Amendment is the protection of a fundamental right enumerated in the Bill of Rights. The Supreme Court has ruled the right existed long before the ratification of the Bill of Rights in 1791. The right to become educated was implicitly protected by the First Amendment. Voting was almost entirely left to the states, with the franchise gradually being expanded more and more and moreover the intervening centuries.

It is an enormous stretch to compare a right implied by a foundational, fundamental, enumerated right, such as the implied right to transport firearms to a range which welcomes you, outside the jurisdiction of your domicile; to an implied entitlement of a right to vote, to have the state pay for the education which you desire, by taking money from another jurisdiction to pay for the education in your jurisdiction.

He states Second Amendment supporters admit there is no explicit mention in the Constitution of the implied right to training.

Then he states the argument of an implicit entitlement of public education is equivalent. It isn't. It does not start with an explicit right. It starts with a claim that an entitlement is required to exercise a right. Exercise of Second Amendment rights does not require an entitlement.

An equivalent for the Second Amendment would be claiming the government must provide everyone with firearms.

There has never been a right to a government-funded education in the United States Constitution. (Some state Constitutions have a right to education in the text, Arizona is one)

There has never been a Constitutional right to government-provided food.

There has never been a Constitutional right to government-provided police protection.

There has never been a Constitutional right to government-provided housing.

There has never been a Constitutional right to government-provided firearms.

There can not be a legal right to those things, because Constitutional rights limit government. They protect you from what the government would do to you.

To say there are Constitutional rights to economic products is to say the government must control the economy and make sure everyone has equal outcomes. Otherwise, the right would not be equal under the law.

A right exists, even if you do not exercise it. Everyone has Second Amendment rights, not just gun owners. Everyone already has the right to seek and obtain an education, protected by the First Amendment, even if they do not exercise that right.

This fundamental misapplication of the word right' requires a fundamental transformation of the structure of government. In essence, it requires the economy to be run by the government, with who gets how much determined by bureaucracies or the courts, instead of from a combination of effort, determination, skill, talent, luck, and, yes, government.

Some redistribution has happened, of course. Redistribution has never been a right. It is a combination of charity and forced redistribution of wealth, to use the force of government to take what would not be given.

Constitutional rights limit what government can do to you. They do not define what governments must do for you. Limiting what the government can do to you does not take resources from someone else.

To equate the arguments for implied Second Amendment rights, which limit what the government is allowed to do, with implied requirements for the government to pay for an education is fundamentally dishonest.

After setting up the argument, by ignoring the direct, obvious differences between a foundational right restricting government, and a demand for more government to take from some, and give to others, Professor Tang makes this statement:

The identical logical structure that underpins these otherwise distinctive arguments presents a puzzle for the Supreme Court. How can it in good faith accept a theory of implied constitutional rights for gun owners only to reject the same argument for schoolchildren? Yet the consensus among close followers is that this is the most likely outcome: Gun-rights activists believe the Court is primed to deliver them a victory in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, while educational-equity advocates recognize that the Courts conservative majority is unlikely to rule in their favor.

They should rule differently. The logical structure is not identical. It is fundamentally different.

The information about the difference is well known in legal circles. It is hard to believe Professor Tang does not understand the theory of natural law and the need to limit governmental power, which is foundational to the entire structure of the Constitution. The federal government is granted significant, but limited powers by the Constitution. The power to infringe on the right to keep and bear arms is not one of those powers.

He rejects that structure. He works hard to replace it with the Progressive construct of a living Constitution; a Constitution meaning only what the current justices are pressured to have it mean at any given moment. Attorney General William P. Barr recently gave a superb speech clarifying the differences in the Progressive vision of expansive government versus the founders' vision of limited government.

The Second Amendment has been infringed in various ways over the history of the United States. Those infringements do not change the foundational right. The Supreme Court has ruled the right to keep and bear arms existed long before the Constitution. The Second Amendment is in place to protect the right, not to create it.

Until 1968, citizens could order anti-tank and anti-aircraft cannons and their ammunition in the mail. Most people, in most places, had easy access to modern firearms, ammunition and ranges.

The Supreme Court is coming out of a long period, during which the words of the Constitution were often ignored, exactly because of the Progressive vision of government Professor Tang is promoting.

An important part of the theory of Progressive governance is the necessity of lying to the population, in order to achieve the objectives the governing elite wishes to enact. This is called manufacturing consent.

The United States is in the process of rejecting that theory, and in restoring a Constitutional government of limited powers.

Elected officials preparing to discuss ‘2nd Amendment Sanctuary’ – Allied News

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP Springfield Township supervisors are looking to touch base with other elected officials on whether Mercer County should be designated a "Second Amendment Sanctuary."

It's definitely an issue that needs to be taken up with the county commissioners, Tim Stiffy, chairman of the board of supervisors, said atlast week's meeting.

Counties and towns across the country have been looking into the "Second Amendment Sanctuary," a designation they say would block enforcement of proposed gun laws that they believe would violate the U.S. Constitution, according to the Associated Press.

Dozens ofmunicipalities in Virginia have passed second amendment sanctuary resolutions.

The resolutions are promoted heavily by the gun rights group Virginia Citizens Defense League, and most of them declare the intention of local officials to oppose any "unconstitutional restrictions" on the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms, the AP has reported.

Supervisors need to engage in dialogue with the county commissioners, said Ray Bogaty, the township's solicitor.

And considering the fact that the township doesn't have its own police department they rely on state police, he added.

Supervisors plan to meet with the county commissioners to discuss the issue, and they're also interested to find out what other municipalities in the county think, Stiffy said.

If a gun owner is doing nothing wrong, then there is no need to take away their Second Amendment rights, he said.

Before the meeting, Stiffy said that if you're legally not allowed to have a gun because of certain charges, like domestic violence, it would stay that way with the "Second Amendment Sanctuary" designation.

Political Horizons: State Bond Commission tangled in 2nd Amendment fight – The Advocate

The State Bond Commission got ink around the world and praise from right-wingers by proclaiming in August 2018 Louisiana would not do business with two of the nations largest banks because of their gun policies, which a majority on the panel considered anti-Second Amendment.

A few months later one of the two targeted banks Bank of America Merrill Lynch won a bond job from the state.

That happened again March 5 when the other targeted bank Citigroup Global bid the lowest interest rate of 2.175% to win the handling of the sale of the $264.6 million 2020 issuance of General Obligation Bond. Last years interest rate was 3.22%. That means Louisiana taxpayers will pay tens of millions of dollars less over the life of the loan.

Louisiana borrowed $350 million on Thursday to keep money flowing to state-financed construction projects.

But the awarding of this lucrative state contract came only two weeks after the Bond Commission went out of its way Feb. 20 to again preclude Citigroup from doing business with Louisiana.

Hypocrisy claimed the left in emails and social media posts. Fake news claimed the right.

The easy answer, however, is the difference between bonds that require competitive bidding and those that can be negotiated. General obligation bonds are used to fund state construction projects, usually found in the annual capital outlay bill. Legally, that work must go to the lowest bidder.

Bank of America, which handles 18% of the state's general obligation bonds, and Citibank, which administers 5%, are two of the largest players in the bond market, which is how governments leverage taxpayer dollars to finance construction projects.

Bonds also are sold on a negotiated basis, as was the case with last years GARVEE projects. That bond sale was used to fund another lane, each way, on Interstate 10 in Baton Rouge and a dedicated lane from the I-10 into the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport.

The State Bond Commission barred two of the largest banks in the world from participating in efforts to fund some highway projects in Louisian

In a negotiated sale, the state decides who can best represent its interests. Citibank was one of seven banks excluded from the pool, Treasurer John Schroders office explained.

Though usually noted, its a distinction lost when proponents focus their arguments on protecting 2nd Amendment rights by excluding banks with policies that fetter their retail and manufacturing clients from selling guns to some consumers.

Attorney General Jeff Landry wouldnt come to the phone, but issued a statement Thursday, through his press office, blaming The Advocate, with which he has been feuding because of reporting about a company he owns that imports foreigners to work on Louisiana projects. Until they (The Advocate) can comprehend basic financial transactions and representations, the only thing I can say is that I will continue to protect the people of Louisiana's 2nd Amendment rights from liberal interests like this paper, said Landry, a member of the Bond Commission.

Treasurer Schroder, who chairs the Bond Commission, also refused to discuss the issue personally, but his press office sent definitions of competitive and negotiated sales. By law, anybody can bid and we take the lowest bidder, no matter who the bank is, Schroder was reported in The Advocate as saying prior to the general obligation bond bids arriving on March 5.

Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne said in an interview last week that Schroder and Landry have taken an inconsistent position by banning banks from some state business because of political positions while including them for others.

They gave the state the best deal, said Dardenne, also a member of the Bond Commission. It stands to reason they would be competitive with other issuances as well. The Bond Commissions job is to get the best rate, to save taxpayers money.

Hes more concerned, however, about the use of staffers to grade the proposals in a way that kept Citigroup from qualifying in February for the underwriters pool to handle negotiated bonds. Bank of America didnt submit a proposal.

In an continuation of last years battle over the state doing business with banks that have gun control policies, the Bond Commission Thursday

Graders for the treasurer, the attorney general and the speaker of the House all three of whom voted to not hire Citigroup and Bank of America because of gun policies gave Citigroup across the board grades of 0, 1, or 3 for categories such as relevant experience, track record and previous services to the state, according to the grading sheets. No mention of political policies was included on the grading sheets.

Those scores were added to the relatively high grades awarded by the Division of Administration, Senate president, and Department of Transportation & Development.

When averaged out, Citigroup came in ninth with a total score of 55.00. The number eight proposal was graded at 55.19 total. The majority on the Bond Commission drew the line at eight proposals, leaving Citigroup out of the pool.

It was a blatant, a clear attempt to use staffers to achieve a political statement, Dardenne said.

County Board meeting still scheduled in spite of coronavirus concerns – newmedia-wi.com

SHAWANO In spite of health concerns over the coronavirus that have spurred numerous closings and cancellations of events, there were no plans as of Sunday to cancel the Shawano County Boards March 25 meeting.

It is anticipated there could be a huge public turnout for that meeting, given that the board will be considering a resolution designating Shawano County a so-called Second Amendment sanctuary.

The resolution would give the sheriff the discretion not to enforce state or federal gun control laws considered to be unconstitutional.

The countys public safety committee has held two meetings on that topic, which turned out crowds of about 50 people for the first and around 30 for the second.

There have been a host of cancellations of meetings and events announced over the last several days due the COVID-19 coronavirus.

The state has ordered that schools be closed starting Wednesday, and some, including the Shawano and Bonduel school districts, have already announced closures starting Monday.

The city of Shawano has closed down City Hall and cancelled public meetings. Many area churches have cancelled Sunday services.

Shawano County is discouraging people from coming to the courthouse building unless they have essential business.

As of Sunday, however, County Board Chairman Jerry Erdmann said the March 25 County Board meeting at the county courthouse is still on.

That is up to me and I have not so far thought of cancelling it, Erdmann said.

I could possibly restrict so many people that would be coming to the courthouse or we could possibly take the names and addresses of everybody that does come, just so we know whos there so we have verification of people, he said.

Erdmann said the county would probably ask anyone who is stick to stay home.

If they definitely want to come, I may limit the number of people that will speak, he said. Thats up to me. But I may also have a health department nurse taking names of everybody that comes in, so if someone would, God forbid, get sick in Shawano County, at least we would know who would be there.

Erdmann said he felt it was important the County Board take up the Second Amendment resolution.

To me its a matter of what the Constitution of the United States says, Erdmann said. This vote is about the Second Amendment, which lies in the Constitution. We have to believe in the Constitution. Every board member basically took that oath when we were elected. So, to me, its more about the Constitution than it is any amendments.

Erdmann said he didnt feel there was any need to postpone the March 25 meeting at this time.

Now, if the situation would change where all of a sudden we are having numerous people sick in the county, I may then postpone it, he said, but right now I havent made the decision. The County Board meeting is still on for the 25th and I will deal with whatever changes happen in the near future.

Erdmann said he has been in contact with the Shawano-Menominee Counties Health Department on the issue and said he has asked department director Vicki Dantoin to update the board at the March 25 meeting regarding the coronavirus.

Taking time to think | News, Sports, Jobs – Daily Mining Gazette

Garrett Neese/Daily Mining GazetteHoughton County resident Matthew Wright speaks in support of a resolution to declare Houghton County a Second Amendment sanctuary county. The county board voted the resolution down 3-2 Wednesday night.

HOUGHTON By a 3-2 vote, the Houghton County Board of Commissioners voted down a revised resolution on becoming a Second Amendment sanctuary county Tuesday, a month after tabling the original proposal.

Commissioners Glenn Anderson, Roy Britz and Gretchen Janssen voted against the resolution. Chairman Al Koskela and Vice Chairman Tom Tikkanen supported it.

Tikkanen opted for a resolution declaring Houghton County a sanctuary county over others based on resolutions passed in other counties. They stopped short of a sanctuary declaration, but passed resolutions supporting Constitutional rights.

Tikkanen said while the resolution is symbolic, it sends an important message to Lansing about the value Houghton County puts on gun rights.

There are limitations constantly being placed on individual ownership Its a slow cumulative effect that eventually many fear are going to result in our Second Amendment rights being virtually nonexistent, he said.

In an interview Thursday, Britz said he was put off by the usage of sanctuary. Despite it being a non-binding resolution, he said, people could take the resolution as a sign that the county will be a refuge from gun laws.

The word sanctuary may give the thought to certain persons that its a place to come and bring some of their problems with them, he said Thursday. I dont believe in that.

Britz said he would gladly have voted for another resolution given to commissioners modeled on one passed in Huron County. That one asked state and federal legislators to maintain the Constitution as is.

I would absolutely have supported that one, he said Thursday. It didnt say anything about sanctuary. The word sanctuary just didnt fit with me.

The revised resolution removed several provisions commissioners had objected to at the previous meeting. In a list of means the commission would take to protect the right to bear arms, the board removed the power to direct the law enforcement and employees of Houghton County to not enforce any unconstitutional law.

Britz approved of the change, but said a clause directing the county not to use county resources or funds towards laws judged to violate the Second Amendment was effectively a backdoor to accomplish the same thing.

I believe its the responsibility of people to vote into office at the state and federal level people we trust that will support the Constitution and not try to change the amendments, he said. We have other avenues rather than to start doing county-level resolutions that mean nothing.

Three other paragraphs were removed from the resolution introduced in February. Two affirmed the boards support for constitutional carry legislation, which would allow people to carry a gun without a license, and stated no citizens should be arrested or prosecuted for exercising those rights. The other stated the rights in the Second Amendment and Article 1, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution apply to all arms, including modern sporting rifle.

Wednesdays meeting drew about 60 people, down from the 100 or so who attended Februarys meeting. Most who spoke during public comment supported the resolution.

Houghton County Prosecutor Brittany Bulleit did not speak for or against the resolution, calling it more of a political issue than a legal issue. She did give the board some relevant case law and other legal issues. Under state law, the county board cannot pass ordinances that contravene state laws, she said.

While I understand the proposed document is a resolution, and not an ordinance, I think it is still important to note this distinction because it sets forth a legal limitation in powers, she said. Further, many requests included in the resolution are not included in the powers given in the statute. That idea should be considered in deciding what portions of the resolution, if any, to pass.

Bulleit also referenced MCL 123.1102, which says local units of government shall not impose special taxation on, enact or enforce any ordinance or regulations on guns except as provided by state or federal law.

Thus, many requests in the resolution could potentially go against the above statute and would have no legal backing, unless the state or federal government passed their own laws, Bulleit said.

The longterm legal repercussions of a declaration as a sanctuary county are unknowable, Bulleit said.

In a statement on the amendment introduced in February, the Michigan Attorney Generals office said it views Houghton County and others resolutions as a policy issue. Because the board still has to follow Michigans firearms laws, the resolution would have no actual effect.

We would view Houghtons proposed resolution as a policy/political statement by the Houghton County Board of Commissioners, which we respect as their right to engage in free speech always with the reminder that of course Houghton County remains subject to all enacted firearms legislation, the statement said.

After the vote, Hancock resident Justin Kasieta, who brought the Second Amendment resolution to the board, said he was disappointed.

I think that the community supports this resolution and were going to keep pushing for it, he said. Commissioners may see a response to what they voted for in November.

Bloomberg Gets It Wrong on Guns and Self DefenseHere’s Eleven Examples – The National Interest

Earlier this month, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloombergwas asked how he justifiedhis push for more stringent gun control when he is guarded by an armed security detail.

Bloombergs response? He is a wealthy businessman and politician who faces threats that normal Americans do not, so its just fine for him to pay others to protect him with guns that hed put the rest of us in prison for possessing.

The reality is that Bloomberg, as a wealthy white man living in upper-class neighborhoods, is statistically far less likely to be a victim of violent crime than most other Americans.

But youd never know it from the way he spends hundreds of millions of dollars advocating gun laws that reserve armed protection for the special few.

In these trying times, we must turn to the greatest document in the history of the world to promise freedom and opportunity to its citizens for guidance.Find out more now >>

Every day, many Americans without Bloombergs wealth and power rely on the Second Amendmentnot private securityto defend themselves against threats to their lives and livelihoods. In fact, almost every major study on defensive gun use has found that Americans use their firearms defensively between 500,000 and 3 million times each year.

Last year, The Daily Signal began a monthly series highlighting just some of the countless times that the right to keep and bear arms made all the difference for ordinary Americans whom Michael Bloomberg wants to disarm. (You can read the stories fromJanuary 2020 here.)

February similarly provided ample evidence in favor of an armed citizenry and against Bloombergs claim that only the select few can be trusted with guns.

Michael Bloomberg is more than wealthy enough to afford to pay armed men to protect him. Most Americans are not so fortunate.

We dont have former law enforcement officers on hand when the convenience store were in gets robbed. We cant rely on an armed detail to jump to our defense when were assaulted. We dont live in gated communities with 24/7 security.

We have only our Second Amendment rights. And they are worth insisting upon.

Biden’s Latest Campaign Hire Shows Joey Boy Is Putting The Second Amendment in the Crosshairs – Townhall

Former Vice President Joe Biden and some in the Democratic Party might want to deny it, but the cat is out of the bag now: they want to destroy the Second Amendment. I know, this really isnt news. You, loyal readers, have known this was the Democrats long game for decades. Its the reason why some were quite irked when former Rep. Beto ORourke, his real name is Robert Francis, said: hell yes, were going to take your AR-15s and other firearms that are so-called assault weapons. Thats liberal speak for a gun that looks scary, though owned by millions. To recap, an AR-15 is a rifle owned by millions, it doesnt fire a high-caliber round, and its firing mechanism is no different than a handgun used by millions of civilians and police officers alike. Its semi-automatic, one bullet per trigger pull.

But and I know Im preaching to the choir, you already knew that toothat that liberal media doesnt care about lexicon, knowing the proper terms or the laws because thats not the point. Gun confiscation is the goal. Period. And white guy Bob blew the game and gave us oodles of political ammunition for multiple cycles. Beto endorsed Biden. Biden, in turn, said he was going to follow his lead on gun control, which is straight-up confiscation. Beto as the nations gun czar would be a parade of horrible too terrible to contemplate. And now, Biden has hired his former campaign manager to helm his 2020 bid (via NYT):

Former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. is planning to announce this afternoon that he has hired Jennifer OMalley Dillon as his new campaign manager, according to two Democratic officials, elevating a veteran Democratic strategist as he tries to scale up his limited organization and pivot toward President Trump and the general election.

Ms. OMalley Dillon, 43, managed former Representative Beto ORourkes presidential campaign last year and before that was a top aide on former President Barack Obamas re-election team.

Presidential campaigns always expand as they transition from the primary to the fall election, which Mr. Biden is clearly doing after building a near-insurmountable delegate lead against Senator Bernie Sanders.

But by tapping Ms. OMalley Dillon as campaign manager, Mr. Biden is also signaling to Democratic donors and elected officials that he knows he has to broaden an operation that, until his Super Tuesday success, had been underfunded.

[]

By installing Ms. OMalley Dillon now, Mr. Biden is effectively attempting to catch his organization up to his success and status as the Democratic front-runner.

Well, if OMalley was helming the were going to take your guns agenda of Beto, then it looks like Biden is pretty open to it as well. Could there be a stop to the Biden hiccups of the campaign trail? Well see. Probably not because this is Joe Biden and there are many, many aides tasked with keeping Joey Boy more or less from getting into situations where he makes a fool of himself. Granted, Beto made his pitch that only the government should own firearms on the grounds ofKent State. You know, where the government shot and killed a couple of students in 1970. And now, we have Joe Biden telling a Michigan voter that hes full of s**t and threatened to slap him after being pressed on gun rights. The voter thinks Biden wants to do that which is why he asked. Katie has more:

The Detroit union worker who former Vice President Joe Biden said was "full of sh*t" for asking about the Second Amendment during a campaign stop this week is speaking out about his experience with the Democratic presidential candidate.

During an interview with Fox and Friends Wednesday morning, Jerry Wayne explained what went down.

[]

"It was a little bit disturbing to see that a politician wants to take away my right to defend myself," Wayne said. "He doesn't need to touch anybody's weapon at all. What we need to do is we need to concentrate on teaching people how to respect firearms and how to use them, not take them away."

"This is a right we need to protect with our heart and soul and it shouldn't be infringed," he continued.

And now, with Mr. gun grabbers campaign manager now taking over Bidens operationlets say the former VP plans to be like his old boss when it comes to gun rights. He wants to strip them.

The Fight against Socialism Isnt Over – National Review

Sen. Bernie Sanders addresses a news conference in Burlington, Vt., March 11, 2020. (Lucas Jackson/Reuters)Bernie Sanders isnt a relic. Hes a preview of things to come.

Democrats are breathing a sigh of relief. Joe Bidens victories on Mini Tuesday make his delegate lead all but insurmountable. Bernie Sanderss electoral weakness, compared with his performance four years ago, has dulled the fear of an incipient socialist takeover of the worlds oldest political party. The left is said to have talked itself into believing its own propaganda and helped President Trump equate Democrats with socialism. Victory in the primary did not come from pledges to eliminate private health insurance or impose wealth taxes. It followed from the perception that Biden is the candidate best able to defeat Trump.

Dont write off the socialist revival just yet. Sanders might not win the Democratic nomination. But this outcome does not mean the forces that propelled him to second-place finishes in the two most recent Democratic primaries will vanish overnight. Abandoning the intellectual fight against socialism, both inside and outside the Democratic Party, would cede the field to an increasingly sophisticated and networked band of ideological activists whose influence in media and politics is greater than their numbers. Such ambivalence could have devastating consequences for American society.

The resurgent left has pushed Biden far beyond where he stood as vice president. And a socialist infrastructure guarantees the philosophys longevity. Aspiring Democratic politicians must at least deal with, if not pay obeisance to, groups such as the Working Families Party and the Democratic Socialists of America. Especially if they inhabit a deep-blue district ripe for picking by the Squad.

Fashionable, lively, radical, and controversial outlets, including Jacobin, Current Affairs, the Young Turks, Chapo Trap House, and Secular Talk, complement popular Instagram and Twitter accounts. And the New York Times magazines 1619 Project shows that the mainstream media is responsive to, and willing to participate in, the latest trends in anti-Americanism.

The most obvious reason not to dismiss the Sanders phenomenon is demographic. On Super Tuesday, Sanders won 30- to 44-year-olds by 18 points, and 18- to 29-year-olds by a staggering 43 points. He defeated Biden by nine points among Hispanic voters and by 25 points among Asian voters. Asian Americans are the fastest-growing ethnic group in the country. Hispanics are second. Sanderss protege, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 30-year-old woman of Puerto Rican descent, represents this ethno-generational cohort. Their place in American life will not be denied.

Right now, socialism is unpopular. Last month, only 45 percent of adults told Gallup they would vote for a socialist for president. Last year, a 51-percent majority said socialism would be a bad thing for the United States. But Gallup also found that the number who said socialism would be a good thing had risen to 43 percent in 2019 from 25 percent in 1942. A majority of Democrats have held positive views of socialism since 2010. A willingness to adopt the socialist ideal is most pronounced among the young. A YouGov poll conducted last year for the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation found that 70 percent of Millennials are either somewhat or extremely likely to vote for a socialist.

It is the decline in institutional religion that drives the resurgence of socialism. Gallup found that church membership among U.S. adults has dropped precipitously over the last two decades, to 50 percent in 2018 from 70 percent in 1998. Why? Because the percentage of adults who profess no religious affiliation has more than doubled. It has gone to 19 percent from 8 percent. The Millennials exhibit the lowest percentage of church membership among generations. Pew says the number of Americans who identify as Christians fell more than ten points over the last decade as the number of religiously unaffiliated spiked. Here too the largest falloff was among Millennials.

Religion not only offers answers to the most powerful, definitive, and ultimate questions of human existence and purpose. It anchors individuals in a particular authoritative tradition defined by doctrinal orthodoxy and refined through multigenerational practice. People released from these bonds are capable of believing anything. Thus, socialism has returned at the same time as climate apocalypticism, transhuman and transgender ideology, anti-vaccination movements, anti-Semitism, conspiracies, and ethnonationalism. In this climate of relativism and revisionism, where the most outlandish theories are a Google search away, both Marxism and utopian socialism seem credible. Nothing is too absurd.

Irving Kristol said that it is easy to point out how silly and counterproductive and even deadly socialism has been, in so many respects, but difficult to recognize its pull as an emotional attachment. The love of equality and progress makes for a special and durable political passion. Socialism, wrote Irving Howe in 1954, is the name of our desire. In the absence of an intellectually coherent and morally compelling account of the inequalities inherent to liberal democracy, so will the desire remain.

Mind-blowing Nasa James Webb Space telescope will look 13.5billion years BACK in time – The Sun

A GIGANTIC space contraption is gearing up to scan alien atmospheres and peer back to the dawn of time.

The James Webb Space Telescope is due to launch next year and will be the most powerful telescope ever built.

Put together by Nasa and aerospace company Northrop Grumman, the $10billion (7.6billion) machine has been plagued by delays and setbacks.

However, it appears it's finally on track to head into space in 2021, giving scientists the chance to "look into the past", according to its creators.

"Over the last few years, we were working in two halves," Northrop Grumman's Scott Willoughby told reporters last month, according to Fast Company.

"Until the summer of last year, they were in a very long engagement, and they got married," he joked.

3

"We put the two halves together to create an observatory. Were celebrating that success."

The project has taken 24 years to complete with the help of thousands of scientists and engineers.

These experts come from 24 countries across three space agencies Nasa, the Canadian Space Agency and the European Space Agency.

Orbiting nearly 1million miles from Earth and measuring four storeys high, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will scan light from stars and galaxies.

It can peer 13.7billion light-years (that's about eight with 22 zeroes afterwards in miles) through space because it's orbiting extremely far from Earth.

For most space telescopes, Earth's thick atmosphere obscures readings but the JWST won't have that problem.

One of the probe's goals is to find new planets outside of the Solar System and scan their atmospheres for signs of aliens.

3

Specifically, it will look for oxygen on alien worlds, one of the key ingredients for life as we know it.

The JWST will also "look back in time" by scanning light given off by extremely distant galaxies and stars.

This ability to "time travel" is based on the fact that even light has a speed limit.

The further you peer into space, the more time has passed since the light you are looking at set off on its journey towards you.

So if a star explodes 6billion light-years away, the light from the event will take 6billion years to reach Earth effectively allowing us to see through time.

Professor Alistair Glasse, of the UK Astronomy Technology Centre, said: "Light takes a finite team to reach us because it doesn't reach our eyes instantly.

3

"The further away an object is, the longer that light has been travelling before we detect it.

"With the telescope we can look as far away as the edge of the visible universe.

"The age of the universe is about 13.5billion years and we can say light has been travelling that long before it reaches us."

JWST is three times larger than its predecessor the Hubble telescope and 100 times more powerful thanks to its vast gold-plated mirror.

The massive primary mirror, stretching 21ft across, is made up of 18 hexagons each the size of a coffee table and weighing 46 lbs.

The beryllium components are coated with a fine film of vaporised gold to bounce infrared light into the sensor equipment.

Unmatched infrared sensitivity will help astronomers understand how galaxies assemble over billions of years.

Drive-through coronavirus testing starts Monday in West Palm Beach – WPTV.com

WATCH LIVE COVERAGE:

Palm Beach County's first free drive-through testing service for coronavirus opened on Monday morning.

FoundCare, Inc., a non-profit Federally Qualified Health Center, has set up an outpatient drive-through testing station in the parking lot of its location at 2330 S. Congress Avenue in West Palm Beach.

SPECIAL COVERAGE: Coronavirus

The site, which opened at 10 a.m. Monday, is offering free COVID-19 tests for Palm Beach County residents.

The service will be offered on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and hours may be adjusted based on needs and supplies. Testing will be conducted by trained FoundCare staff members.

Prior to being tested, patients need to call 561-967-0365.

During the call, each patient will be asked basic screening questions about their symptoms and other criteria for the test. The phone line will be manned for screening and appointments weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Patients will be asked if they meet any of the following testing criteria:

"Patients typically present with fever, cough, and possibly shortness of breath," said Dr. Oneka Marriott, Chief Medical Officer for FoundCare. "Most cases have presented with mild symptoms. Patients with underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, chronic kidney disease, immunocompromised states, or those greater than 65 years of age with fever or symptoms of cough or shortness of breath may experience more severe and life-threatening outcomes of COVID-19 infection."

At the testing site, patients must have their patient code and an appointment in order to be tested. No one will be tested without an appointment.

While the patient remains in their car, they'll need to provide proper identification and contact information, including a valid phone number. FoundCare staff will safely store the patients information, collect the specimen using a test kit, and send the specimen to a qualified lab.

According to Dr. Marriott, samples will be sent to either a commercial lab like Quest or LabCorp, or the Florida Department of Health's Bureau of Public Health Laboratories.

The patient will be instructed to self-quarantine at home while waiting for the test results, which can take 48 to 72 hours. FoundCare staff will contact the patient with the results as soon as they are available.

While FoundCare is performing the test for free, the laboratories may generate a separate bill for patients for that service.

In Martin County, a drive-through coronavirus test site opened on Saturday at Cleveland Clinic Martin North Hospital, located at 200 SE Hospital Avenue.

People flock to beaches as other places across Tampa Bay shut down – WTSP.com

CLEARWATER, Fla. With nearly every major event canceled or postponed this weekend, the beach became a go-to spot Saturday.

As parts of the world came to a stop, the pace at Clearwater Beach stayed steady, with full parking lots and tourists soaking up the sun.

We were supposed to go to Disney, actually, the day they closed it, Chuck Smithson told 10News.

He and his family are in the area from Ohio and headed to the beach when they found out the park was closed something thats happened only a handful of times in the parks roughly 50-year history.

Im shocked the beaches arent shut down. I mean we need something to do, other than sit inside, but Im shocked the beaches arent shut down, he said.

Avoiding large gatherings can help manage the pandemic. Fewer people in one place can lead to fewer people getting sick and help limit the overall burden on the health care system.

We take precautions, we have hand sanitizer on hand, we wipe everything down, we try to stay away from most people, he said.

Local businesses on the beach said they were busy over the weekend, but said they didn't think it would last.

Were already getting cancellations from travelers who are scared to get on planes, Gregg Corder with Charter Boats Two Cs said.

Busy beaches amid COVID-19 concerns

Jordan Bowen rpeorts

TREASURE ISLAND, Fla. - With schools closed, events canceled, and games postponed, manyBay Area beaches are keeping busy despite coronavirus concerns.

Sun and fun were on the minds of Bay Area beach-goers on Saturday in the wake of event cancellations. Dozens of big events scheduled for this weekend were called off amid growing concern over the spread of coronavirus in mass gathering settings.

"I'm a big sports fan. I'm not happy about it. I understand the problems that are happening," beach-goer Jayson Armstrong said.

The world of professionals sports is currently in the midst of a major time out with all leagues postponing their seasons. More than 2.7 million students in Florida's public schools are also feeling the effects after being forced to take a 2-week recess.

"I was supposed to go to Reggae Rise-up and I don't know, I was bummed," beach-goer Erica Pougnet said.

Pougnet is among many taking to the surf and sand in the wake of mass cancellations. This means a boost in business for this beach concession stands on Treasure Island.

"There are people everywhere. The parking lot has been full since 9:30 this morning so it doesn't seem like people are doing too much to avoid being out in public," concession attendant Holly Leonard said.

Beach-goers are hoping the cancellations help the crisis stabilize at a faster pace so other big events planned in the months ahead aren't affected.

"I hope this is over and done with as soon as possible because everyone is just panicky and in panic mode and it's just kinda crazy," Pougnet said.

Coronavirus Update: Jones Beach Eyed As Possible Drive-Thru Testing Site As Number Of Cases On Long Island Grows – CBS New York

MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) The number of coronavirus cases continues to grow on Long Island as families strive to keep life as normal as possible.

Were just trying to come up with something to keep these kids busy, said Massapequa resident Jacqueline Martin.

Playing tag and catch on a ball field was not the first choice for some of these kids and parents, reports CBS2s Dave Carlin.

The Martin family planned on being inside the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, but the Jurassic World Live Tour was canceled because of coronavirus concerns.

We assumed it would happen, we knew it was coming but we were looking forward to it, said Martin.

In Nassau County, the number has grown by 20 overnight, bringing the total of confirmed cases to 70, with more tests being processed. Ten are hospitalized, with three in critical condition including a 57-year-old and a 76-year-old.

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said Saturday she expects the number of confirmed cases to continue to grow.

Nassau County has a hotline up and running (516) 227-9570 and is operational seven days a week during business hours.

Curran noted that Friday New Rochelle had launched the states first drive-thru testing facility, and she was looking forward to replicating that. On Saturday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that Jones Beach was being looked at as a possible drive-thru testing site.

I am confident that drive-thru testing is not too far in our future, Curran said.

Curran added that officials are in discussions with hospitals about possibly setting up tents for testing.

Curran said that as more testing is deployed, the number of positive cases will grow. Curran reminded people it is also allergy season.

Officials continued to reiterate the importance of people staying home if theyre sick.

Youve got to stay home if youre symptomatic. Youve got to call your health care provider, she said.

Officials said people under mandatory quarantine are checked on to make sure they are physically staying put. They could be confined if they are found to be violating it, officials said, adding that no one under mandatory quarantine has yet violated it.

We can not stress this enough: If you are in quarantine, you must stay in quarantine, Curran said. Containment is the key to preventing this from spreading.

Nassau County officials say theyve delivered a lot of food to people under quarantine.

Curran said officials are seeing a concerning increase in incidents of bullying, particularly on social media, of children who are in quarantine.

I think we all need to not stigmatize, blame, Curran said. Nip it in the bud were all in this together and if we start attacking each other, this is not a good thing.

Curran said the protocol as regarding schools remains to close it for 24 hours if a positive case is found.

The CDC has a mass pandemic plan. And closing schools is one of the very last measures. Science has shown us what measures work in preventing the spread of diseases and what has not. And closing schools in a pandemic has actually been scientifically proven to be one of the least valuable things because now students are home. And somebodys got watch them. If a parent has to go to work, maybe now theyre with a grandparent that they could be exposing that they would not be, Nassau County Health Commissioner Lawrence Eisenstein said Friday. We may get to that point, but there is a scientific reason for the decisions that we make.

Boris Johnson’s hero is the mayor who kept the beaches open in Jaws. That’s fine by me – The Guardian

The coronavirus has turned the UK into an outlier. The rest of the world has seemingly gone into lockdown, shutting schools and public transport in a desperate bid to quell the pandemic. But Boris Johnson has gone in a different direction. According to him, the UK is business as usual.

But what prompted such a policy? Is he privy to more advanced scientific knowledge than all the other countries? Is he really such a vocal proponent of herd immunity? Or is there something else going on? Perhaps to find out, we should travel back to 2006, when Johnson told an audience that the real hero of Jaws is the mayor.

Ah, Mayor Larry Vaughn, Amitys foolhardy leader who orders the beach to remain open despite overwhelming evidence that theres a massive shark in the water determined to eat everyone. Now everything suddenly makes sense.

But still, at least Vaughn is finally getting his dues. Without him, Jaws would simply be a film about a policeman who spots a shark, imposes a stringent set of beachside social distancing rules and then kills the shark. But Vaughn is the necessary sand in the ointment. He can only see the potential economic losses caused by a beach closure, and pushes on against all arguments. As you can see, its a beautiful day, he tells the media at one point. The beaches are opened, and people are having a wonderful time. Vaughn is the entire reason why Jaws became an enduring classic.

And yet, until now, the cultural impact of Vaughn has been minimal. True, in 2013 the comedian Howard Kremer released a song celebrating Larry Vaughns impressive the-show-must-go-on attitude (Only three people got eaten / The rest had a great season / Cos of Larry Vaughn). And, true, Boris Johnson is a self-confessed Vaughnaholic. But thats about the extent of it.

Looking back, Vaughn had three things going for him. The first, obviously, was his never-say-die attitude towards deadly shark attacks. The second was his incredible taste in blazers. This, remember, was a man so dedicated to his role as the mayor of a seaside town that he literally walked around in a jacket covered in little tiny anchors. Whatever you think of the mans policies, you have to admire his style. I have for some years been a member of a Facebook group devoted to discussions of Vaughns anchor jacket. Paul F Tompkins once commissioned an imitation suit and the only thing stopping me from doing the same is my increasing suspicion that the money would be better spent on long-life food to feed my children when the coronavirus inevitably mutates and our quarantine period becomes indefinite.

The third thing is Vaughns longevity. Youd think that, in a fair and just society, he would have been removed from office the moment the people of Amity caught wind of his preposterous self-interest in the face of disaster. But no. Do me a favour and watch Jaws 2. Its set a few years after the devastating attacks of the original, but guess whos still mayor? Thats right, Larry Vaughn. Better yet, despite even more overwhelming evidence that another shark is terrorising the coastline, Vaughn still continues to frustrate all of Brodys plans. The electorate, it seems, holds a lot of stock in Vaughns total refusal to believe in the existence of sharks.

Look, nobody is saying that Vaughn was perfect. In his ability to willingly send townsfolk to their deaths for short-term financial gain, some might argue that he was actually something of a villain. But to me, he is a figure of ultimate dignity. Was he a good man? No. Did he do his best? No. Is it a good thing that our prime minister is repeatedly being compared to him during a once-a-century global health crisis? No. But did he wear a nice jacket with some anchors on it? Yes. Yes, he did.

Man flew to Palm Beach after positive coronavirus test: reports | TheHill – The Hill

A passenger flying from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City to Palm Beach, Fla., has been diagnosed with coronavirus, according to media reports.

Theindividual was on a JetBlue plane with 114 passengers that landed Wednesday evening, with officials telling passengers to remain on the tarmac for several hours as health officials spoke to travelers on board, according to ABC News.

One of the passengers on the planesaidthe person diagnosed with coronavirus may have received the news before the plane departed, according toWPTV in West Palm Beach, Fla.

"The person across the way from me was taken to the back of the plane. He was wearing masks and gloves. His wife was sitting in the same row as me and mentioned to others that he wasn't feeling well. She said he had gotten a phone call with his test results right before we had taken off, implying that he had a positive test but not actually saying it," passenger Scott Rodman told WPTV.

People sitting adjacent to the passenger who tested positive for the virus were offered information about monitoring their health.

Workers for the airline sterilized the containment area where passengers left the plane. In New York, JetBlue workers also conducted additional cleaning of the gate from which the plane departed, according to the Port Authority in New York.

"The health and safety of our customers and crewmembers is our first priority. In reviewing last nights event, we determined the customer boarded our flight knowing he was awaiting results for a coronavirus test without disclosing it to anyone at," JetBlue said in a statement.

The statement continued, "Consistent with CDC guidance, we ask all customers who are not feeling well, who believe they may have coronavirus, or who are awaiting test results to avoid travel until they are cleared by a medical professional. Last nights event put our crewmembers, customers, and federal and local officials in an unsettling situation that could have easily been avoided, and as such, this customer will not be permitted to fly on JetBlue in the future."

In the U.S., there are about 1,323 confirmed cases and 38 deaths from COVID-19, according to the ABC report.

Watch The Late Layne Staley Performing With TOOL On A Beach In Oahu, 1993 – Metal Injection.net

The footage of the late Layne Staley performing with Tool during the first Big Mele festival on Oahu in 1993 has some interesting back story, as well as a poignant flash-forward moment featuring Tool vocalist Maynard Keenan sharing the stage with Staley's former Alice in Chains bandmates in 2005.

Both bands got to know each other while on the Lollapalooza tour in the summer of 1993, and Layne would end up spending time taking over vocals for Keenan during Tool's set. He and Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine used to joke about which one of them was "more metal." When he wasn't performing, Layne spent most of his time hanging out with the members of Babes in Toyland in their dressing room as they were pretty much the only band drinking and partying on the tour. There is also an interesting story told by former AIC tour manager Baldy (Todd Shuss) about Layne and Maynard getting drunk at an after-hours bar in Atlanta during which they stopped talking to each other and passed notes back and forth instead. If you know anything about Alice in Chains, one thing should be pretty clear: Everybody likes Layne Staley.

Tool would head to Oahu following the conclusion of Lollapalooza to play the Mele Festival on August 15th with Fishbone (who also played Lollapalooza '93), Primus, Stone Temple Pilots, and Violent Femmes. The question here is, why exactly was Layne in Hawaii? It's not entirely clear, but given it's proximity to Seattle, it's not hard to imagine Staley hopped on a plane and showed up to jam with his Tool pals. Alice in Chains didn't have a show scheduled until August 17th in Dallas, so technically, he was commitment-free.

At any rate, during the Lollapalooza tour, Layne liked to take over Maynard's spot when Tool performed their 1992 song "Opiate." And the logical way to one-up that milestone up is to do the same thing on a beach in Oahu. Like the waves of the Hawaiian islands, the footage is a bit gnarly as it's not professionally shot, but it's good enough thanks to the sound quality of this star-crossed event. Following Layne's tragic death in 2002, Maynard would pen a song with his other band, A Perfect Circle, which appeared on their 2003 album, Thirteenth Step. In an interview with MTV's Kurt Loder, Maynard spoke about the album noting some of its references to addiction and recovery were a direct reflection on his friendship with Staley. Here's Maynard's heartbreaking response to Loder asking him if he "saw things coming" with Layne:

"Yeah, absolutely. But there was nothing you could do, and it's very difficult to understand. Being a friend to someone like Layne, it really does your head in. I don't understand it, but I do want to help other people who are on the borderline, who might hear (a song) and go, "You know what, I think I want to try to live."

Staley would perform "Opiate" with Tool once more, this time in Layne's home state of Washington during Tool's show in Bremerton on May 28th, 1994. Following Staley's death in 2002 Maynard would join the members of AIC for a benefit show in 2005 to raise funds for the victims of the devastating tsunami that struck Sumatra, Indonesia. A surprise guest at the show, Maynard would perform Man in the Box (Facelift, 1990) and Them Bones" (Dirt, 1994).

Footage and audio from all performances can be viewed/heard below.

2 men shot in North Long Beach, police investigating it as gang-related – Long Beach Post

Two men were hospitalized in serious condition after they were shot early this morning in North Long Beach, authorities said.

Police responded to the shooting at about 3:44 a.m. on Sunday, March 15 in the 400 block of East Mountain View St., in the Addams neighborhood just west of the Carmelitos Housing Project.

When officers arrived they located two victims at a residence, said Long Beach police spokesman Lt. James Richardson.

One man was wounded in his upper body and the other in his lower body, Richardson said.

Its unclear if they were shot inside or outside the residence.

Detectives responded to the shooting, which is being investigated as gang-related.

Thomas Mensah: the pioneer of fiber optics and nanotechnology – Face2Face Africa

Dr. Thomas Mensah, a nanotechnology expert and Ghanas technology icon, is a pioneer in fiber optics manufacturing and communications systems.

He has contributed immensely to the development offiber opticsandnanotechnology. Fiber-optic communication is the use of light pulses to transmit data through cables from one place to another.

The Ghanaian-American engineers contribution to the process of making fiber optic cables has enhanced the cost-efficiency of producing those cables, paving the way for a much greater degree of fiber optics technologies at work in our world.

Mensah was born in 1950 in Kumasi, Ghana. He could read newspapers and speak French fluently and was the main contact person between his fathers business and french clients. He also won different levels of the National French Contest (Le Grand Concours) between 1968 and 1970.

Whilst in high school, Mensah excelled in science and math and went on to study chemical engineering at the University of Science and Technology, Kumasi in Ghana graduating in 1974.

He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and then studied chemical engineering at the University of Science and Technology at Montpellier, France where he graduated in 1978 with a Ph.D.

Dr. Mensah moved to the United States in 1980 after taking a job as a research engineer with Air Products & Chemicals of Allentown, PA.

Three years later, he joined the engineering team of Corning Glass Works in Corning, NY. He soon discovered that the fragility of the glass fiber-optic wires which the company manufactured caused them to snap easily if the drawing and coating phases of manufacturing fiber optics were configured to produce more than two meters per second of wire.

He discovered a solution that results in the fiber optic wires greater durability and increases in production at rates of up to 20 times the previous production speed without breaking.

His groundbreaking discoveries at Corning Glass Works was the beginning of his engineering career.

In 1986, he joined Georgias AT&T Bell Laboratories, now known as Bell Labs, where he was able to utilize fiber optics to create a guidance system for missiles that incorporated a small camera that was installed within the missiles nose.

The images captured by that camera could be delivered to a pilot, giving them a technique for locking onto a target with incredible accuracy.

Reportedly, the fiber optics missile guidance systems were capable of working whiletraveling at the speed of sound and were utilized in Patriot missiles and otherguided weaponry used by the United States in the Gulf War.

InDecember 1988, Dr. Mensah was part of a team of Corning inventors who wereissued U.S. Patent No. 4792347, entitled Method for Coating Optical WaveguideFiber. The patent protects the method of using carbon dioxide as a purge gas toreduce air entrainment and bubble inclusions in the liquid coating of a glassoptical fiber.

Dr.Mensah is also one of two inventors listed on U.S. Patent No. 4636405, issuedunder the title Curing Apparatus for Coated Fiber.

He holds 14 patents with seven patents in fiber optics technologies over the course of six years.

Some of his inventions include semiconductors designed for space communications, tank gun barrel replacements and solid-state rechargeable cell phone batteries.

Dr. Mensah founded in Norcross, GA, a high tech firm called Supercond Technologies, which helped to develop advanced structural materials for American fighter aircraft.

Dr.Mensah is currently the president and director of Georgia Aerospace SystemsManufacturing, which is also focused on research and development in aerospacematerials.

Dr. Mensahs technological exploits have various recognition and award. He earned the Corning Glass Works Industrial Outstanding Contributor Award for Innovation in Fiber Optics, 1985; AT&T Bell Laboratories High-Performance Award, 1988; and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE)s William Grimes Award for Excellence in Chemical Engineering, 2006.

He got the Kwame Nkrumah African Genius Award in Ghana in 2017, The World Nanotechnology Conference Award in Dubai, 2019, Fellow recognition at the US National Academy of Inventors, Percy Julian Award in the US, AIChE 100 amongst others.

He has also authored five books on innovation including the international textbook Nanotechnology Commercialization.

Apart from creating Silicon Valley of Ghana, Dr. Mensah is involved in several high profile infrastructure programmes in the West African country that is aimed at helping Ghana reach 90 percent of its Sustainable Development Goals.

Dr. Mensah has beendescribed as the Imhotep of Modern Times.

China and US salute the cyborg soldier – Asia Times

The arrest of Harvard ProfessorCharles Lieberfor failing to reveal his work for the Chinese is more than alarming. One of the worlds leading experts in nanotechnology, Liebercontributed toChinas Thousand Talents Program and assistedChinain its military arms race with the United States, whether knowingly or not. Americans should be concerned thatChinais pursuing military nanotechnology solutions, including linking soldiers brains directly to computers.

Since at least 2000, when President Clinton proclaimed his National Nanotechnology Initiative, US government agencies have been heavily engaged in nanotechnology research.A significant part of the work has been funded by theDefense Department, and the long-term goal is to create a new kind of warrior linking the human brain to machines, to millions of sensors and to the computer cloud. If successful, the capability of the human brain would be expanded exponentially. For the warfighter, the complete integration of sensors to shooters and near-perfect situational awareness would create a formidable soldier, and if in the hands of an enemy, a highly dangerous adversary.

The American military, especially since the microelectronics revolution, has based its superiority on technology as a force multiplier, permitting the United States to field smaller but much more lethal forces.Chinais rapidly catching up with the US military, a source of deep worry in Washington.

As more and more military operations begin to rely on artificial intelligence, a field actively pursued by the Pentagon and by the Peoples Liberation Army ofChina, the line between the warrior and machines starts to blur. Connect the human brain directly to the computers and systems making critical calculations, and the character of the warfighter is forever changed, assuming it is possible.

TheDefense Departmentin 2018 published a major study called Cyborg Soldier 2050, Human/Machine fusion and the Implications for the Future of the DoD.The study proclaimed :

neural implants for brain-computer interfacing would allow for seamless interaction between individuals and secondary assets (machines). This control could be exerted upon drones, weapon systems, and other remote systems operated by an enhanced individual. The enhancement would not simply entail user control of equipment (brain to machine) but also transmission to operator (machine to brain) and human to human (command and control dynamics) to enhance situational awareness as drone, computational analytical, and human information is relayed to the operator.

While theDefense Departmentis aiming at 2050, inventor and futurologist Ray Kurzweil sees the mind-machine interface happening by 2030, where he says the 300 million or so very general pattern recognizers in the brain can be expanded by creating a synthetic neo-cortex linking the brain to the cloud and merging artificial and human intelligence together. This will be achieved by nano-scale brain implants.

Lieberand his partners were working on exactly this type of technology and received substantial funding from the Department of Defense and many of its agencies. Lieberand his colleagues were awarded a number of patents, but the most important one appears to be a 2015 patent award called Systems and Methods for [nano-scale] Injectable Devices. The idea of the 2015 patent was to inject a nano-scale matrix into the brain and creating a brain interface that could be linked to machines.

Research for this patent was funded by theDefense Departmentand the National Institutes of Health. The government has certain rights to the invention, according to the patent application.

Lieberhas been accused by the US government of concealing information about the work he was doing inChina. In 2015, Lieberwas elected as a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

In 2015, the same year that Lieberwas awarded a patent enabling nanotechnology implants for the human brain, Pentagon officials sounded the alarm aboutChinaworking on their own cyborg project. Then-Deputy Defense Secretary Robert Work said:Now our adversaries, quite frankly, are pursuing enhanced human operations, and it scares the crap out of us.

Cyborg technology is also being commercialized.Elon Musks company Neuralink is now entering the animal-testing phase and states that it will start experiments on humans in 2020.Lieberis one of the consulting scientists at Neuralink. Musk has invested $100 million of his money in this startup and is raising additional funds.

Whether 2050 or 2030 or in the next few years the first Cyborg Warrior may actually appear. Will it be an American Cyborg or fromChina? No one knows.

Stephen Bryen served as a deputy undersecretary of defense and as the director of the Defense Technology Security Administration. He is a senior fellow at the American Center for Democracy.
