Howmet Aerospace creating up to 75 new jobs – Canton Repository

City Council approved an income tax break in exchange for job creation.

CANTON The city expects Howmet Aerospace to hire as many as 75 new employees in exchange for an income tax break.

"Theyre getting ready to go through a pretty large expansion," Deputy Mayor Fonda Williams told City Council on Monday.

Howmet Aerospace which manufactures engines and transportation components will invest about $9.1 million in new equipment at 1935 Warner Road SE, he said after the regular meeting. The facility currently employs 103 people, and new hires will bring the annual payroll to $5.1 million.

A company representative returned a message seeking comment Monday but did not immediately have additional information.

City Council unanimously approved a 1% tax credit and authorized the mayor or public service director to enter into a job creation agreement with RMI Titanium, a subsidiary of RTI International Metals based in Pittsburgh, doing business as Howmet Aerospace.

Canton will give 1% of the 2.5% city income tax back to the company. It is a 10-year incentive beginning June 1, 2021, which applies to full-time positions paying at least 150% of the state minimum wage.

"Payments will continue each year thereafter so long as the company meets all of the necessary criteria with the final payment being June 2030," Williams' memo states.

Councilman Greg Hawk, D-1, asked what options the city would have if Howmet Aerospace does not create 75 new jobs.

"Theres a callback in all of our agreements," Williams responded.

The deputy mayor also noted that tax incentives are reviewed each year.

Stevens Aerospace and Defense Systems announced Wednesday afternoon that it would be relocating its operation from the Nashville International Airport to the Smyrna Airport.

Stevens will become a part of the Hollingshead Aviation FBO campus with a 30,000 square-foot hangar and will relocate 75 jobs from Nashville to Smyrna. It will also add 30 new jobs initially with the intention of growing its workforce.

Id like to thank Stevens Aerospace for its commitment to expand its operation in Middle Tennessee and create 30 jobs, Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Bob Rolfe said in a release. As our economy goes through significant disruptions, its even more vital for us to support private investment and job creation, which can help Tennessee rebound.

Stevens Aerospace and Defense Systems is known for its maintenance, repair and overhaul of private and government aircraft. The move also brings them closer to Middle Tennessee State and the school's aerospace program.

Aerospace and aviation are target industries in Rutherford Countys economic development strategy, Destination Rutherford Chairman Bill Jones said in the release. This announcement speaks to our great business climate for the aviation and aerospace industry, even in a time of uncertainty.

For over 40 years, advanced manufacturing company LAI International has made components for the defense and aerospace industry, as well as surgical devices, bringing technology like waterjet cutting, laser technology and other machining tools.

Now, the company is turning those tools and engineering capability toward the mobilization against COVID-19.

The Westminster-based company is producing face shields for local hospitals that are in need of protective equipment for doctors and nurses treating the disease thats causing a global pandemic. After design, retooling and testing, the company had 1,500 face shields out to seven local hospitals and healthcare providers in less than two weeks.

Just showing that were doing the small part that we could possibly do was a feel-good story for the whole entire shop, said LAI International CEO Marlon Johnson.

This week, the company was one of the 20 in Maryland that received state grants to pivot or expand production of personal protective equipment. Administered by the Maryland Department of Commerce, the $1.6 million was given in the first round of grants from the Maryland COVID-19 Emergency Relief Manufacturing Fund.

Gov. Larry Hogan has said ramping up the supply of personal protective equipment is a key building block for being able to reopen. With local companies enlisting to help, the fund is providing additional capital for the new operations.

We quickly created this program to address an immediate critical need, and our business community has responded in a big way, Maryland Commerce Secretary Kelly M. Schulz said in a statement. Another nine companies received grants from the City of Baltimore two weeks ago, and Station North makerspace Open Works has mobilized makers to 3D print face shields.

For LAI, the process meant iterating. Looking at the existing disposable face shield designs that were available and the additive manufacturing tools at the companys 50-associate shop, Johnson asked his team, How can we take it up a notch?

A key component of LAI Internationals design is that the shields are reusable. The company also wanted them to be comfortable, so that when the physician wears them or the nurse wears them, it feels like glasses, Johnson said. Subscribing to the idea that one shouldnt ship a product before ensuring the maker would use it themselves, the CEO and others wore the face shields as they were working to test them. After all, theyre used to wearing protective glasses in the shop.

There was also collaboration. For clinical testing, they worked with Dr. Alan H. Shikani, who is the chief of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital and LifeBridge Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. And to retool the operation, they worked with Shannon Van Deren, who is president of Layered Manufacturing.

The shields have since been delivered to Medstars Union Memorial, Good Samaritan and Georgetown hospitals; LifeBridge Healths Sinai and Carroll hospitals; and institutions in the Johns Hopkins University and University of Maryland networks.

Going forward, LAI is looking to continue production, and ramping up to make 1,000 face shields a week.

Collins Aerospaces new president, Interiors, Troy Brunk is convinced the airline passenger experience as we know it will change in a post-pandemic world. Whether that new reality includes long-term social distancing on board remains to be seen, but its here for a spell.

The only thing we know for certain is that as long as COVID-19 remains an issue for the world, social distancing is here to stay for a while. I dont want to guess what that means for the long-term, he told Runway Girl Network, when asked if onboard social distancing will continue after aviation gets back to business.

What I can say with certainty is that the flight experience as we know it will change and well be there creating what our passengers need every step of the way helping our customers help their customers.

A growing number of airlines are blocking seats and spacing passengers apart to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Consumer advocacy group Flyers Rights is calling for IATA and ICAO to publish best practices for facilitating onboard physical distancing, arming flight attendants with M-95 masks and ensuring all passengers don masks, among other proposed measures.

Now a unit of Raytheon Technologies, Collins Aerospace is a premier provider of aircraft interiors, including economy and premium seats, lavatories, and systems for waste, oxygen and potable water. As such, the company is well positioned to aid in the aviation industrys recovery. Indeed, this is a key topic of discussion not only within the Interiors business but across the entire organization, says Brunk.

However, new products and solutions take time to develop and get certified. Were certainly looking at those future concepts but right now our first priority is to help the airlines make the changes they need to keep passengers safe in a financially strained environment. For example, helping them explore seat configuration changes with existing equipment, and new measures to deal with social distancing requirements.

In recent weeks, aircraft interiors stakeholders have tabled a number of intriguing ideas to support social distancing on board. Italian firm Aviointeriors is proposing forwards-backwards seating with a wraparound shell layout that includes a head-level transparent thermoplastic screen. HAECO, which in 2019 dbuted its Eclipse staggered-angled hybrid seat, suggests that Eclipse offers unmatched privacy, safety and social distance as onboard social distancing is adopted by airlines.

Noting that the future of aircraft interiors will require more means of providing passengers with piece of mind that their journey will be comfortable, safe and sanitized, thermoplastics specialist SIMONA Boltaron suggests that new cabin concepts, as well as retrofitted aircraft seats, will feature privacy and safety dividers that separate passengers and can be cleaned frequently. Boltaron is pushing forward its Boltaron 4350 translucent and transparent materials, which meet crucial flammability requirements and can be thermoformed to provide a safety barrier without sacrificing regulatory compliance or aesthetics.

For its part, Collins Aerospace has done a lot of research in this area with its innovations throughout the cabin, from nose to tail. Looking at innovations to reduce interaction through touch, innovations for surfaces we have to touch and innovations that positively impact the environment inside an aircraft are all areas our engineering organizations are exploring, Brunk tells RGN.

In terms of whether Collins Aerospace has any IP that might prove useful in a post-pandemic world that perhaps didnt suit the market before, Brunk says: We are always looking into future technologies, the associated IP and the market timing. I dont necessarily think that suitability has changed, I think about it more from a market timing standpoint. I am convinced that the post COVID-19 environment is more likely to accelerate market entry points for many of these innovations.

Meanwhile, Collins Aerospace and more broadly, Raytheon Technologies is still helping to fight the spread of COVID-19. From an Interiors perspective, our team has been actively involved in producing 3D print headbands for face shields. This is part of a larger Raytheon Technologies effort to produce nearly 2,500 headbands a week, says Brunk.

Im particularly proud that these are being produced at some of our Interiors sites including Bohemia, NY, Everett, WA, Colorado Springs, CO, Nogales, Mexico, Savannah, GA, New Berlin, WI, Phoenix, AZ, Peshtigo, WI and Kilkeel, Northern Ireland which has also been producing hospital scrub kits for medical workers. Its been extremely gratifying to see the great work that our team is doing.

He says the team has also been been witnessing many individual stories of employees volunteering their time and effort throughout the entire organization.

Collins Aerospace is also working closely in an advisory capacity with our airline customers as they transition passenger aircraft to all-cargo flight missions. There are however, other parts of the Collins organization that are involved as well, including our Information Management Services group which is helping with humanitarian flights and waiving fees for those efforts, notes Brunk, who recently succeeded Dave Nieuwsma as president, Interiors, reporting to Collins Aerospace president Stephen Timm.

As an essential business, has Collins Aerospace scaled down any of its interiors production operations?

As you know, the commercial aerospace industry has been hit hard by COVID-19 and we arent immune to that, responds the Collins Aerospace executive. We are currently working closely with our airlines and OEMs to adjust to this new reality. I cant get into specifics at this time, but I would expect that well hear more about the impact in the May 7th earnings update from Raytheon Technologies.

Private equity firm Artemis has successfully completed the divestment of its portfolio company Adcole Maryland Aerospace (AMA).

The company has been sold to aviation industry private investment firm AE Industrial Partners (AEI).

Financial details of the deal have not been disclosed.

Based in Marlborough, Massachusetts, US, AMA specialises in designing and producing mission-critical optical sensors such as sun sensors, star trackers and star cameras for satellites.

It serves the US Department of Defense, other government agencies, and major aerospace and defence companies.

The companys satellite components have played a key role in various space missions, including Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Pluto voyages.

Artemis founder and managing partner Peter Hunter said: Were very proud of what we have accomplished in partnership with the talented AMA team.

As a result of the companys industry recognised commitment to innovation and quality, AMA is uniquely well-positioned to meet the growing demand for high reliability, mission-critical satellite components and subsystems.

Sandvik achieves AS9100D aerospace certification for titanium and nickel-based superalloy powders – Powder Metallurgy Review magazine

Sandvik Additive Manufacturing, a division of Sandvik AB, headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, reports that its new powder plant for titanium and nickel-based superalloys has received AS9100 Revision D certification for deliveries to the aerospace industry. The company believes that this will accelerate the adoption of additively manufactured titanium parts, as well as a shift towards sustainable manufacturing.

The powder plant for Osprey titanium and nickel-based superalloys was officially opened at the end of 2019 in Sandviken, Sweden. Since then, Sandvik explains that extensive work has been ongoing to ramp-up the highly automated plant, finetuning all processes and qualifying the powder to ensure the best possible consistency, morphology and quality suitable for Additive Manufacturing. The first two titanium powders produced at the plant are Osprey Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 and Osprey Ti-6Al-4V Grade 23. The nickel-based superalloys are Osprey Alloy 625 and Osprey Alloy 718.

Having atomised fine metal powders for more than forty years, and supplying titanium to the the aerospace industry since the 1980s, Sandvik is no stranger to powder atomisation or the requirements of the most demanding industries, stated Keith Murray, Vice President of Global Sales, Sandvik Additive Manufacturing.

Now we are one of few companies that has the new and prestigious AS 9100D quality certification for our Osprey titanium powder and nickel-based superalloys used for Additive Manufacturing. According to Sanvik, its titanium powders for Additive Manufacturing supports the shift towards sustainable manufacturing, as the AM process results in far less material waste than traditional subtractive techniques, while also encouraging new levels of design freedom. The company states that this is opening up the use of titanium in other industries such as automotive and tooling and that Sandviks own Lightweight CoroMill 390 is excellent proof of this as the additively manufactured version of the mill is said to be more than 80% lighter and up to 200% more productive.

Sandvik further states that Powder Metallurgy is also labeled as a recognised green technology and the net-shape capability of technologies like Additive Manufacturing not only means that material waste is minimised, but also that great energy efficiency can be achieved, by eliminating manufacturing steps.

Murray added, If combining this with a light and strong material like titanium, the sustainability advantages can be enormous. Weight reduction is for example a constant key issue for the aerospace industry, driven both by fuel cost and carbon footprint. The same is true for cars and trucks, and everything else that moves. Each kilogram of weight loss on an airplane saves about 3,000 US dollars per year in fuel and can make a great difference for the planet.

In addition to a shift towards sustainable manufacturing, Sanvik explains that traceability is of vital importance in the aerospace industry, the company can offer an incomparable level of traceability for its titanium powder, which is made possible by having the full supply chain inhouse from titanium sponge to finished powder.

The new titanium powder process uses advanced electrode inert gas atomisation technology to produce highly consistent and repeatable titanium powder with low oxygen and nitrogen levels. The automated production process is also supported by several industrial robots and a dedicated downstream sieving, blending and packing facility. The new powder plant is located next to Sandviks Additive Manufacturing facility, which includes all relevant AM processes for metals. This company says that this means it can tailor the powder to different AM processes, on the same site.

Platform Aerospace awarded a Prime on the $6.1B KRACEn MAC Contract Award – The Southern Maryland Chronicle

April 28, 2020 (Hollywood, MD) Platform Aerospace was selected as an awardee on the Kits, Recovery, Augmentation, Components and Engines (KRACEn) Multiple Award Contract (MAC) supporting the United States Navy.

Commander, Fleet Readiness Center (COMFRC) awarded a 10-year, $6.1 billion, enterprise contract vehicleto 42 small business industry partners on April 14, enabling U.S. Navy, government customers and international partners to procure aircraft maintenance services and sustainment support quicker.

The Kits, Recovery, Augmentation, Components and Enginescommonly called KRACEnis an indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) MAC that will provide maintenance services and support for single satellite sites, small aircraft quantities, personnel to augment government maintenance teams, and overhaul capabilities for aircraft components and subsystems. This is COMFRCs first, multi-billion contract award.

The MACs scope of work, which is set aside for small-businesses, includes modification kit build and installations, recovery of downed aircraft, repair and overhaul of aircraft and components, repair and overhaul of engines, and augmentation labor supplement for maintenance both ashore and afloat.

As one of 42 small business industry partners, Platform Aerospace will help enable COMFRC to effectively use the KRACEn enterprise contract vehicle allowing the Navy meet its sustainment needs expeditiously while delivering improved outcomes, COMFRC Executive Director Roy Harris said.

KRACEn is a crucial addition to our traditional organic capabilities, providing us with the means to tap into the expertise of small business industry partners.

The nature of the work covered by KRACEnsimple platform, organizational-level Contractor Logistic Services (CLS) requirements involving few aircraft, elemental or off-aircraft tasksis well-suited for small businesses, according to COMFRC Acquisition Group, CLS Division Lead Chris Giggey. The CLS Division, formally known as the Fast Acquisition Solutions to Enable Readiness (FASTER) team, was charted by Commander, Naval Air Systems Command in 2018 to improve acquisition speed and quality of services by developing expertise in CLS contracting.

Chennai startup Garuda Aerospace to combat COVID-19 by using drones to disinfect 26 cities – YourStory

Before the coronavirus outbreak, drone startups in India had one main concern - regulatory grey areas. Often seen as a security threat, drones were initially used only in the armed forces.But gradually, they percolated into the domain of civilian activity, and were used for industrial applications, imagery, and surveillance.

But drone startups have now managed to capture the limelightin combating coronavirus by playing a key role in disinfecting places across the country.

Chennai-based Garuda Aerospace is one among them. Founded in 2016 by Agnishwar Jayaprakash, the startup, which has built several agricultural drones, is now helping the government in drone-based sanitisation projects.

An ISO 9001 firm, the startup was selected by the United Nations as one of the top 10 socio economic innovations of 2016.

At present, Garuda Aerospace has a manufacturing facility incubated at Agni College of Technology, Chennai. According to the founder, the college ground has become an ideal testing location for all its prototypes.

For the past few weeks, the startup has been using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to disinfect around 3.28 million sq km area across India to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Named as the Corona killer (CK), these automated UAVs aid in the sanitisation of crowded locations such as markets, metro stations, airports, schools, colleges, hospitals, and government offices, which otherwise would have been an impossible task for public workers to undertake a manual spraying process.

Using drones is more advantageous due to the accessibility, which enables them to reach heights of up to 450 feet and spray disinfectants on buildings, which is impossible to be done manually.

The CK 100 sanitisation drone consists of patented autopilot technology, advanced flight controller system, and is equipped with fuel efficient motors that enables the drone to be deployed for 12 hours a day. It has a payload capacity of 15-20 litres, flight duration of 40-45 minutes, and maximum ceiling height of 450 feet, which is sufficient to disinfect 99 percent of tall buildings across India. Each drone can cover 20 km a day.

The startup said it sources raw materials from the US, Spain, Germany, Taiwan, and Japan.

A Harvard Business School alumnus, Agnishwar got the idea of starting Garuda Aerospace when he was representing India at an international swimming competition. He saw how underwater cameras were extensively used in foreign countries to help swimmers alter their techniques.

I had the vision of using drones to help me get better in swimming. I developed a drone with the help of my engineering friends, and it worked wonders for my training. Later, after retiring from the sport, I founded Ignite India, which was focussed on building innovations for social and economic change, and it became the largest innovation ecosystem in the country, and was established in 7,500 schools in collaboration with the United Nations, says Agnishwar.

We had a lot of amazing ideas, and so we wanted kids to pitch in a TV show format, he adds. It was then that he produced a TV show called 7th Sense, which was loosely based on Shark Tank, but it was for children. The best performers were rewarded with chocolate showers, gifts, etc., and drones were used to shower children with gifts.

I realised the use case of drones could be vast and wide, and decided to start Garuda Aerospace, says Agnishwar.

Agnishwar adds that every drone varies in its manufacturing and set up costs. The startup made an initial investment of Rs 1 crore in 2016 to set up the basic facility, which had the capacity to start the assembly line.

Drones used for small event coverage can cost around Rs 50,000, and can go up to Rs 5 crore for those used in the military, armed forces, etc.

The startup has so far received work orders from Smart City Municipal Corporations of Varanasi, Raipur, Bhopal, and Municipal Corporation in Chandigarh; and from Jaggayyapeta, Kurnool, in Andhra Pradesh. Apart from this, it is currently servicing eight states and 26 cities. Many private companies have also signed three-year contracts for conducting sanitisation operations using drones at Rs 30,000 per day.

Additionally, Garuda Aerospace has worked for the Tamil Nadu Electricity Department and the TN Health department to commence sanitisation operations. The startup has also worked during severe emergencies such as Chennai floods in 2015, Cyclone Vardha in 2016, and during Kerala floods.

The team consists of 45 full-time employees, and 500 contract pilots established in 26 cities across India.

Apart from Garuda Aerospace, some of the other startups helping to fight the COVID-19 crisis is Mumbai-based ideaForge, which is monitoring social distancing, and there is Telangana-based Marut.

A group of researchers at IIT-Guwahati have also developed a drone for disinfection of larger areas, while another group has come up with a drone equipped with an infrared camera, which can help in the thermal screening of groups without human intervention, and to identify suspected COVID-19 cases at an early stage once the lockdown is lifted.

The startup has secured Rs 3.5 crore in funding over the past four years, and has a pan India presence.

Agnishwar says that over the years, Garuda Aerospace has been manufacturing indigenous drones in India, and is being guided by retired IAS, IPS, Army, and RAW officers, while also being advised financially by several corporate honchos from companies like Boeing, KPMG, Trans Advisory, CBRE, etc.

Garuda Aerospace can easily scale from a national market leader to a global market player in the next few years, says Agnishwar.

Catholic criticises Protestant YECs . are you serious?Are you promoting the same Catholic church that placed Galileo under house arrest for supporting the Copernican model? and banned both of their books?

The same church that taught (inerrantly uh huh) and held to deeply flawed Aristotelian philosophy and integrated it into its religious worldview, including a static geo-centric universe? as believed and taught by Catholic apologist Robert Sungenis?

Since your premise is education of Catholics vs Protestants more than slightly disingenuous assertion that your condition in matters now considered science is supportive of your ability to interpret historical theology.

Consciousness after death is clearly taught in Scripture. Indeed it is which is why any religion asserting this (by faith it has no other methodology) is utterly incompatible with evidence-based science.

Whatever brings you comfort: circular arguments; appeals to evidence-free assertion; . . . and trying to make out that atheism is a religion. I was a Christian. I know what a religion is. Atheism aint.

As you must know, many if not most of the important philosophers throughout history have been dualists and theists, rather than materialists. So its not simply blind faith. The existence of a soul, the afterlife, and God can be argued for strictly on a philosophical / non-religious basis, and has been defended by many brilliant, dazzling minds.

Secondly, I would contend that when you say utterly incompatible you overstep your own epistemological boundaries: the limits of your own chosen worldview. You can say that consciousness after death has nothing to do with science, and I would enthusiastically agree. Itcannot, by definition, because science (essentially applied empirical philosophy) deals with matter. Therefore, it has nothing to tell us about things like souls and spirit, which are irrelevant or nonexistent categories within its purview.

By the same token, however, because it cannot speak to those things, it also follows logically that it cannotrule them outfrom its own perspective. You can no more say, science has disproven the existence of souls than we can say, religion has disproven the theory of evolution. Both are impermissible, because they are serious category mistakes at the presuppositional level.

You also go way too far in insinuating that any religion that believes in consciousness after death (i.e., immortality of souls), must do so only by faith (false: we can also enlist dualist philosophy), and must be utterly incompatible with evidence-based science. The latter is also a false statement, based on what I have already stated: its like comparing apples and oranges or a fish to a bicycle.

Christianity is not only not intrinsically opposed to science; it was crucial and virtually necessary to thebeginningof modern science. See also: Christians or Theists Founded 115 Scientific Fields.

And we can bring much reason to the defense of our views, not just faith. Thats what the theistic proofs are about. You may disagree with them, but theyarespecimens of philosophical reasoning; not just faith.

Lastly, you flatly deny that atheism is a religion. Typically, as an atheist, you seem to think that science is the be-all and end-all of all knowledge (clearly and unarguably false), that it is based only on evidence (false: it necessarily entails mathematics and logic: both of which include unprovable and non-empirical starting axioms), and that atheism entails no acceptance of unprovable axioms. The latter is also spectacularly false, as I think I demonstrated rather conclusively in my paper:Atheism: the Faith of Atomism.

Id be happy to discuss any of these things at length. As it is, I will now make a new blog paper of this exchange. Ill post it here when Im done.

Nathan G. Alexanders Race in a Godless World: Atheism, Race, and Civilization, 18501914 is a better book than its title, however accurate, might indicate. Well written and informative, the book rises far above the level of the academic thesis that lies at its heart. Perhaps more importantly, Race in a Godless World provides a solid building block in the still largely untold history of freethought and atheism.

The book begins by setting the stage for three intersecting strands of thought in the 1850s: freethought (atheism), rational science (soon to be dominated by Darwinism), and slavery. As Alexander frames it in his introduction,

Secular Enlightenment thought opened new avenues for thinking about race. It offered powerful arguments against inequality and slavery through the rhetoric of the equality of man, but it also served to emphasize the divisions between human races through the guise of rational science.

Indeed, throughout the 1850s freethinkers were generally anti-slavery. Freethinkers likewise found common cause with emerging science that suggested the world was much older than the biblical 6,000 years and therefore cast doubt upon the biblical account of creation starting with Adam and Eveand, by extension, all of Christianity.

But following the course of science to oppose racism wasnt as straightforward as atheists today would like to believe. While slavery was something most freethinkers, immersed in the ideas of humanism, found abhorrent, after slavery itself was eliminated and replaced by the Jim Crow racism of the late 1800s, the lines of moral suasion blurred. Evolution, in its early stages, would be used to make the argument that there was in fact a racial hierarchy of sorts, based on a rudimentary understanding of the science. (The author notes that Darwin himself didnt hold to any such hierarchy but felt evolution suggested the common humanity of all. Other scientists were not so certain, however.)

While this did create some tension within freethinking circles, Alexander does a good job of illustrating how freethinkers finessed this problem through a combination of emphasizing that science was still unsettled on the point or, more unfortunately, by acquiescing to a certain level of racist thought that they put aside in favor of what they felt was the more pressing matter of fighting Christianity in general. Its not always a flattering portrayal, but Alexander does a good job of examining the arguments around this issue, and generally finds that freethinkers, while far from being free of racial bias, at least tended to be more tolerant than the general public.

Alexander spends one interesting chapter examining the racism prevalent in the late 1800s against Asian people. Here, Western scholars in the freethought community generally came forward in a positive way, as they found much value in the history of a people that created a system of ethics and morality not based on Christianity or God. They viewed Confucius as a forerunner to secularization, calling him our great reasoner.

The late nineteenth century was one of conflicting attitudes towards segregationist racism within the freethought community. Most, following the impulse towards liberal humanism that had brought them to freethought, gave general support to the rights of black people, if still rooted in what we now see as some cringeworthy paternalism. The ideas and attitudes of such liberal thinkers as Robert Owen and John Stuart Mills both heavily emphasized that the character of a particular person was influenced most by circumstances, rather than by race.

But others, including Darwins own cousin Francis Galton, misused the ideas of evolution to support a tiered structure of what they regarded as scientific racism, or eugenics, as it came to be known. For instance, Galtons close follower Karl Pearson argued that the near elimination of native tribes in North America was unfortunate but on the whole necessary, and, on balance, that it brought more good results than bad.

But as the twentieth century began, Alexander describes how freethinkers and atheists, such as the Scottish-born J.M. Robertson, started to confront more directly the problems of these racist views and began to instead present the strongest arguments against racism that were rooted in an atheist perspective. They were instrumental in organizing the 1911 Universal Races Congress in London that came out definitively against scientific racism. But as the history of this Congress was retold, Alexander notes, the role of atheists and freethinkers has been minimized.

In a conclusory chapter, Alexander explores whats next for racism in a godless world. While generally positive, he raises a disturbing warning sign of atheism increasingly being part of one segment of the alt-right movement, again using a shallow understanding of evolution to underpin their racial beliefs.

Throughout the book, Alexander tells his story not only by exploring the ideas themselves, but also by highlighting those ideas through the lives and words of such freethinkers as Robert Ingersoll, Robert Owen, and W.E.B. Du Bois, as well as others, like Frederick Douglass, whose freethought sympathies were apparent if not firmly established. He also draws attention to a whole host of lesser-known characters whose stories deserve to be told and remembered, and he does so with verve and style. For instance, he highlights a satirical cartoon by Englishman W.P. Ball called Noahs Family, in which each member is portrayed as being of a different race (thereby explaining why there are different races). Another minor player brought to life is James Morton, an American atheist born in 1870 who became a regular columnist for the Truth Seeker, where he called upon Darwinian evolution to explain that the human race is one in all essential characteristics and that therefore it was impossible to talk about a race being superior or inferior to any other. Alexanders research is wide, and his selections are illustrative.

As the history of freethought continues to be explored, books such as this are integral to understanding the importance and strength of atheistic thought in history. They also serve to show that its not a story that is all virtuous or without internal conflicts and controversy. But that comes with the territory. Alexander provides a needed and readable account of a particularly important transitional time in freethought, and how it dealt with the most important issue of the last two hundred years. If the title of the book piques your curiosity at all, it is a book well worth reading.
