Gauge Your Age: Epigenetics and the Future of Medicine – WhatIsEpigenetics.com

Why do some people stay healthy throughout their lives and others dont?

Whilewe all age, we dont all age in the same ways or at the same rate. Epigeneticmodifications are largely responsible for this phenomenon, with DNAmethylation being the most studied modification.

An EpigeneticClock is a sophisticated way of tracking our real age by measuring methylationor demethylation at particular DNA sites (Kanherkar, 2014). The uses forepigenetic clocks are manifold. The most obvious use comes as a diagnostictool, one that is already being offered by some companies as adirect-to-consumer test. The second is as an in vitro screening method, something to inspect the effects ofpharmaceuticals on cells in a petri dish. This lets researchers analyze subtlemolecular signs of aging, paving the way for the rapid discovery of potentialanti-aging therapeutics (Lujan, 2019).

In geriatric medicine, we are always struck by the difference between our patients chronological age and how old they appear physiologically.- Douglas, Kiel, HMS professor of medicine at Beth Israel

Accuratelyestimating biologicalage has tremendous value. This is because aging has a negative effect onevery aspect of our health. Its not a substitute for more specific tests, likefasting glucose levels, but paints a big picture. Like any other biomarker, itdoes not stand alone, but it is complementary to the growing ensemble of testsmodern medicine now has at its disposal. Epigenetic clocks made headlines withthe publication of a paper that found all-cause mortality could be predictedbased on methylation patterns in blood (Marioni et. al, 2015).

Inother words, the team found they could guess when someone was going to die fromany number of natural causes.

However, the title of MITs article, Want to knowwhen youre going to die? is sensationalistic and misleading. Even if ourinitial reading is not spectacular, we can take steps to change it. Someepigenetic modifications are well-entrenched, but not all are set in stone (Kanherkar, 2014).The sands of time flow downwards for us all, but the pace varies. In otherwords, what is not completely reversible can still be influenced by ourchoices, if not through lifestyle changes, then through future therapeuticsmeant to produce specific changes in the epigenome.

Whilethe usefulness of epigenetic clocks is not questioned, it is not clear why they work. Its also not obvious asto whether changes in DNA methylation are the cause or result of aging (Eckler,2019). Despite this fact, the literatureabout their current and potential applications continues to grow. A deeperunderstanding of exactly whats going on behind the scenes will help us developmore precise therapeutics. Steve Horvath, a pioneer in the field, envisions afuture where you can go to your doctor, get your clock checked, get aprescription, then return a few months later, significantly younger thanbefore.

Smoking, drinking, stress, chronic infection, and majordepression can all measurably accelerate the aging process as gauged by theepigenetic clock (Gao, 2016; Gassen, 2017; Horvath, 2015; Rosen, 2018; Han,2018). There is also an intrinsic rate ofaging, which appears to vary between individuals and populations. Certaingroups, like the Tsimane of Bolivia, age slowly compared to other ethnicities (Horvath,2016).

Direct-to-consumerkits are proliferating, like BioVivasTimeKeeper and Elysiums Index.Discouraging readings shouldnt be cause for panic or despair, but they canserve as wake up calls. A bad reading can be a cause for further investigation maybe its an issue with your telomeres or mitochondria. Maybe its a Klothodeficiency.

Whetherits prognostics, diagnostics, precision medicine, drug discovery, or basicresearch in gerontology, there is no doubt that the use of and uses forepigenetic clocks will continue to explode.

Laughter is the best medicine – Bangkok Post

Educating children about the Covid-19 pandemic is a critical mission. The popular Kai Hua Ror (Laughter For Sale) comic magazine recently launched its special edition KnowCovid, which seeks to demystify for kids the disease that has so far infected more than 7 million people globally.

KnowCovid is currently available in Thai and English with translated versions coming soon. Photos Banlue Group

Using familiar cartoon characters and beautiful illustrations coupled with plenty of humour, KnowCovid is designed to show families how to protect themselves from the outbreak. Some 100,000 free print copies, as well as an e-booklet, are available now in Thai and English; and Myanmar, Cambodian and other versions are said to be on the way.

In the midst of this life-altering pandemic, many people remain concerned for their safety and finances. Adults at least can use their phones or social media as a medium to stay in touch with family, friends and colleagues and to exchange information on how to handle the situation wisely. But children and adolescents are suddenly trapped in confined spaces with their parents all day long. Stay-at-home orders mean they aren't allowed to go to school, visit a shopping mall or playground or spend time with friends. Even though many of the lockdown measures have been eased and many places reopened, some may not have a clue what's really going on. And this confusion could lead to the favourite question, "Why?", which sometimes can be difficult for the adult to explain.

With its goal to help children and families learn about Covid-19 through cartoon characters, KnowCovid was produced under a collaboration between Kai Hua Ror publisher Banlue Group, the World Health Organization Thailand, the United Nations, the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, the Ministry of Public Health and parliament.

"We're glad to be a part of the project and also proud of our art in the form of a cartoon, which will help communicate and benefit society in times of crisis," said Pimpicha Utsahajit, Banlue Group executive director. "We sincerely hope to help protect people's lives and reduce the spread of infection, which will greatly reduce the burden on medical personnel. We believe that humour and good mental health are important for everyone at this time."

KnowCovid is currently available in Thai and English with translated versions coming soon. Photos Banlue Group

With its simple but effective content, KnowCovid shows readers how to reduce the risk of infection for themselves and their communities, from washing hands frequently and properly, coughing and sneezing safely, always wearing a mask, avoiding touching your mouth and nose, and learning about social distancing and how to stay a safe distance (1-2m) from others -- all told with humour and an easy-to-understand approach. Pimpicha said that there's a plan to release a translated version into different languages in neighbouring countries such as Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar to provide knowledge to foreign labourers regarding Covid-19 because the cartoon is a universal language and can cross any border. And Covid-19 is a crisis that the whole world faces.

The 56-page comic book features work by a team of well-known cartoonists with unique styles such as Wat, Fen or Tai, and his iconic fictional child character Pangpond, or Aor and the hilarious girl with bangs, Noo-Hin, or some of the new generation of cartoonists like Noi-na, Yung and Wirat who draw and use gags through these cartoon characters from the information submitted.

Pimpicha said that in the past few months there's been a lot of fake information about the disease that has circulated online, which could lead to weak protection or risky behaviour. One of the highlights of KnowCovid is the 12 false beliefs about Covid-19, such as drinking alcohol to prevent Covid-19, that thermometers can identify 100% of infected people, or that mosquitoes can transmit the coronavirus to humans.

"Apart from providing basic information about the virus, the cartoons take on sensitive topics and psychological issues, such as showing people how to reduce any stigma surrounding a coronavirus infection and how to be aware of domestic violence that has increased as a result of the pandemic lockdowns," said Pimpicha.

"It's quite an important issue that not that many people are talking about. Because lockdown measures may result in more violent factors, for example, family stress or loss of income, we believe this is useful information that should benefit any family. Because what we all need the most right now is a healthy family environment."

Pimpicha said the content provided in KnowCovid will still be relevant in years to come whether during a lockdown or not.

"As long as the medical profession has not yet found a cure or vaccine, and Covid-19 has not disappeared from the world, we believe that there are still many people on this planet who do not have the correct knowledge on Covid-19. So this information is always useful."

KnowCovid has now been released nationwide through village administration offices, village health volunteers, provincial halls, primary and secondary schools, public libraries, state-run hospitals and health centres. People can also download a copy at gocovid.issara.in.th, or request a copy by calling the 1300 hotline of the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security.

MHPS, RCMP blended with new initiative – Medicine Hat News

By GILLIAN SLADE on June 9, 2020.

gslade@medicinehatnews.com

A new initiative to address crime will see Medicine Hat Police Service and the RCMP working together across traditional boundaries.

Andy McGrogan, chief MHPS, says the priority street crimes team is now expanding into a regional property crimes team after presenting a business case to the province showing the benefits of a new initiative.

The case study looked at nine specific cases where cross-jurisdictional issues had negatively impacted investigations.

McGrogan uses an example of someone in a rural area contacting MHPS after a robbery where a large amount of cash was stolen. The description of the suspect, believed to be addicted to drugs, helped MHPS to identify someone who was known to police. However the crime took place in a rural area covered by the RCMP.

McGrogan says by the time the suspect was apprehended the stolen cash was gone and could not be recovered.

If we would have had a regional team in place we would have been on that instantly and probably would have had that person and hopefully had some of that cash returned, said McGrogan.

Funding for three RCMP members to join the MHPS priority street crimes team has now been granted, said McGrogan. The province will also fund one of four MHPS officers on the team who were previously all funded by the city.

The RCMP is not able to immediately place people in the positions so members of MHPS are filling in until the RCMP appoints its own members within a matter of months, McGrogan said.

It gives us the ability to co-ordinate our activities all over southeastern Alberta in relation to prolific street crimes, said McGrogan.

The group has been operating for a couple of months already and has already seen significant success, said McGrogan.

Last week we got a stolen vehicle, a motorcycle its been good, he said.

A scheduled press conference in Medicine Hat with Doug Schweitzer, minister of justice and solicitor general, to make the announcement on Monday was cancelled with no rescheduled date provided.

The anticipated announcement by Schweitzer was also to include drug-related crime and addiction treatment supports. Schweitzers office was not immediately able on Monday to provide details on that initiative.

I am thankful the government listened We are going to show results, said McGrogan. As soon as they (the RCMP) bring their members in we will be standing our members down, said McGrogan.

Parks and Rec: A different take on Parks and Recreation Month – Medicine Hat News

By Medicine Hat News Opinion on June 9, 2020.

While June signals the arrival of Parks and Recreation month, typically celebrated by engaging in community recreation opportunities, it goes without saying this year looks different. While it is always important to maintain proper safety procedures while recreating, there are extra measures to consider this year to keep individuals, families, and communities illness-free. Here are some ideas on how to keep active, healthy, and socially engaged throughout the summer while still maintaining the fight against COVID-19.

While public swimming areas will not be open this summer, there are alternate ways one can enjoy water-themed recreation. Floating or paddling down the South Saskatchewan river, or one of its tributaries, is a great way to enjoy the Medicine Hat areas gorgeous scenery. Remember to keep safe while on the water by checking weather and water conditions prior to heading out, and always wear a flotation device when in or near bodies of water.

Medicine Hat playgrounds will soon be open again, but it is encouraged to visit those closest to home, and re-think your visit if the park is busy. Disc golf courses at Gillwell, Leinweber, and Kiwanis Central Parks are great places to engage in friendly competition while keeping gatherings intimate.

The citys vast trail system provides the ability to get up close and personal with local natural areas. Medicine Hats unique grassland environment provides not only a gorgeous landscape, but is home to many plants and animals that thrive in prairie environments. The Citys environmental reserves, many of which have trail systems, are home to native grassland communities with significant ecological history, and value to the natural world. Enjoying and learning about these areas will in turn promote prairie conservation, helping maintain the ecosystems value as carbon reservoirs, and habitat for many animals and vegetation.

Whether in your backyard or a public space, remember that keeping connections alive between friends and nature will help the temporary two metre (six feet) separation seem smaller. Social distancing measures are simply another means of protection, not unlike wearing a helmet while biking, or a PFD while canoeing. Please visit http://www.medicinehat.ca to find more information on local public health updates, and remember to keep updated with changing Provincial guidelines and restrictions.

‘Our China boycott medicine is hitting the right spot’: Sonam Wangchuk reacts to Amul ad, Google Play Store report – Livemint

Sonam Wangchuk is happy with how his boycott China call has led to an action-oriented disruption of Chinese services in India. Reacting to the news stories about Amul account suspension, Google Play Store removal of anti-China apps and a Global Times report on Indian consumers, Wangchuck said, " This is a good news, our medicine is hitting the right spots."

"The people's call for boycott of Chinese products, uninstallation of Chinese apps is forcing China to coerce Google and Twitter to take down the anti-China narrative," Wangchuk said in a brief Youtube video uploaded Monday.

"The only takeaway from the recent China-related controversies are that people's call for action is having a far reaching impact, please continue on this path," said the man who inspired Aamir Khan's character in Bollywood blockbuster 3 idiots.

Wangchuk also pointed out a report of China's state-run publication, Global Times titled, "Indians can hardly resist buying Chinese quality goods: analysts," adding that the boycott call is impacting China, otherwise Global Times would not have commented on this.

Ladakh-based innovator and educationist Sonam Wangchuk had appealed to Indians to boycott Chinese products in the backdrop of the recent standoff between Indian and Chinese forces along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in that region.

Wangchuk's call of "give up all Chinese software in a week, all Chinese hardware in a year," has resonated with millions of Indians in the face of Chinese aggression in the Eastern Ladakh reason.

Revolution Medicines Announces Dosing of First Patient in Phase 1b Combination Study of RMC-4630 and AMG 510 – GlobeNewswire

Study Evaluates Combination Treatment with Investigational SHP2 and KRASG12C Inhibitors in Patients with KRASG12C Mutant Solid Tumors

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., June 09, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Revolution Medicines, Inc. (Nasdaq: RVMD), a clinical-stage oncology company focused on developing targeted therapies to inhibit frontier cancer targets, today announced dosing of the first patient in a Phase 1b clinical trial evaluating the combination of RMC-4630, the companys investigational SHP2 inhibitor, and AMG 510, Amgens investigational KRASG12C inhibitor. The trial, which is being sponsored and conducted by Amgen with clinical supply of RMC-4630 provided by Revolution Medicines, is an open-label, dose-escalation and dose-expansion study evaluating the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, and efficacy of the combination of RMC-4630 and AMG 510 in patients with advanced solid tumors harboring the KRASG12C mutation.

RMC-4630 is a potent and orally bioavailable small molecule that is designed to selectively inhibit the activity of SHP2, an upstream cellular protein that plays a central role in modulating cell survival and growth by transmitting signals from receptor tyrosine kinases to RAS. AMG 510 is a first-in-class investigational oral therapy designed to selectively and irreversibly target the KRASG12Cprotein, an oncogenic RAS mutant at the core of the RAS signaling cascade.

Preclinical and clinical research has shown that cancers caused by RAS pathway mutations exhibit oncogene addiction, in which tumor cells become highly dependent on signaling through the RAS pathway to survive. Suppressing KRASG12C activity, either directly with AMG 510 or indirectly by inhibiting SHP2 with RMC-4630, has shown anti-tumor activity against non-small cell lung tumors harboring KRASG12C in early clinical trials. In addition, adaptive resistance to inhibition of RAS signaling is common. SHP2 is an upstream RAS pathway node that often plays a key role in adaptive resistance, and inhibiting SHP2 with RMC-4630 has been shown preclinically to suppress adaptive resistance to KRASG12C inhibitors.

Our strategy is to advance a broad clinical program to assess the therapeutic potential of RMC-4630 in both monotherapy and multiple combination treatment regimens. With our recent demonstration of encouraging monotherapy activity for RMC-4630 against KRASG12C lung cancers, it is compelling to pair this investigational drug with KRASG12C inhibitors such as AMG 510, said Mark A. Goldsmith, M.D., Ph.D., chief executive officer and chairman of Revolution Medicines. This collaborative trial sponsored by Amgen, a leader in the field, will help test our hypothesis that RMC-4630 may be useful as the backbone of targeted therapy combinations for the treatment of various RAS-dependent tumors.

RMC-4630 and AMG 510 have each demonstrated activity in early-stage clinical trials in patients with KRASG12C tumors, stated Steve Kelsey, M.D., president, research and development at Revolution Medicines. Initiation of this trial is an important step in the evaluation of this combination and its potential to treat RAS-dependent cancers by simultaneously inhibiting the activity of different oncogenic targets within the RAS signaling cascade.

About RMC-4630 and Sanofi Collaboration

RMC-4630 is currently being evaluated in a Phase 1 monotherapy clinical trial (RMC-4630-01) for a range of tumor types featuring specific, molecularly-defined oncogenic mutations, a Phase 1b/2 study (RMC-4630-02) in combination with cobimetinib in patients with relapsed/refractory solid tumors displaying specific genomic mutations, and in the recently initiated Amgen-sponsored Phase 1b study in combination with AMG 510 in patients with advanced solid tumors harboring the KRASG12C mutation.

The SHP2 inhibitor program, including RMC-4630, is the focus of an exclusive global research, development and commercialization agreement with Sanofi.

About Revolution Medicines, Inc.

Revolution Medicines is a clinical-stage oncology company focused on developing novel targeted therapies to inhibit elusive high-value frontier cancer targets within notorious growth and survival pathways, with particular emphasis on RAS and mTOR signaling pathways. The company possesses sophisticated structure-based drug discovery capabilities built upon deep chemical biology and cancer pharmacology know-how and innovative, proprietary technologies that enable the creation of small molecules tailored to unconventional binding sites.

The companys pipeline includes RMC-4630, a clinical-stage drug candidate that is designed to selectively inhibit the activity of SHP2. Additionally, the company is developing a broad portfolio of inhibitors of other key frontier oncology targets within the notorious RAS pathway and the related mTOR signaling cascade. These include inhibitors of multiple mutant RAS proteins and SOS1, as well as RMC-5552, a development candidate within the companys 4EBP1/mTORC1 program currently in IND-enabling studies.

Elon Musks Top Priority Now Is Going to Mars and the Moon – Observer

Now that SpaceX has successfully launched two NASA astronauts to the International Space Station and Tesla has opened after a pandemic shutdown, Elon Musk is now literally aiming beyond Earths orbit and prioritizing his ultimate space dream: colonizing Mars.

In a letter to SpaceX employees over the weekend, the ambitious entrepreneur said his rocket companys focus now is Starship, the prototype-phase spacecraft thats supposed to fly up to 100 humans at a time to Mars when paired with the SpaceXs upcoming Super Heavy rocket booster.

We need to accelerate Starship progressdramatically and immediately, Musk wrote in the email, obtained by CNBC. Please consider the top SpaceX priority (apart from anything that could reduce Dragon return risk) to be Starship.

Starship is one of SpaceXs three main pillars of business; the other two are the Crew Dragon vessel, used in NASAs ISS mission, and the Starlink satellite broadband project. The reusable interplanetary spacecraft has been under development since late 2019 at SpaceXs testing site in Boca Chica, Texas.

So far, SpaceX has built five prototypes of Starship and suffered multiple setbacks. The first two prototypes, Mk1 and SN1, were destroyed during pressure tests in November 2019 and February 2020, respectively. The subsequent version, SN2, passed a pressure test in March. But the next one, SN3, collapsed during testing a month later. The latest prototype, SN4, blew up during a test in Boca Chica on May 29.

SpaceX is already working on an SN5, which is expected to be used in the next test, with plans for SN6 and SN7.

Besides Mars colonization, the Starship system (the spacecraft and the Super Heavy booster) is also intended to be used for delivering satellites to Earths orbit, long-duration spaceflight and sending humans back to the Moon, either for government scientific projects or SpaceXs own commercial lunar program.

The latter, which Musk has said could materialize as early as 2023, has secured only one customer to date: Japanese retail billionaireYusaku Maezawa, who reportedly paid a hefty deposit for the faraway vacation.

Cryptoassets and Litigation – Lexology

Syedur Rahman of Rahman Ravelli considers the issues that have been established regarding cryptoassets in litigation and those that still need to be addressed.

The shape of fraud is ever changing due to the digital age, as shown by the use of cryptoassets.

Bitcoin was invented in 2008 by an unknown person (or group of people) using the name Satoshi Nakamoto. In 2009, the first Bitcoin was mined. A system was created recording the transactions made in Bitcoin across computers linked in a peer-to-peer network, better known as the blockchain. Now global institutions and banks raise billions of dollars selling blockchain-related instruments and there are over 5,000 different cryptocurrencies being traded with a total market capitalisation of approximately $201 billion.

In November 2019, the UK Jurisdiction Taskforce (UKJT) published its legal statement, identifying key questions that needed to be answered about English laws approach to cryptoassets and smart contracts. The report was described by Sir Geoffrey Vos, the Chancellor of the High Court, as something that no other jurisdiction had attempted. While the document is not a legal precedent, the aim of the legal statement was to afford a degree of legal certainty.

In December 2019, the landmark cryptocurrency case of AA v Persons Unknown & Ors [2019] EWHC endorsed and approved the UKJTs analysis of cryptoassets and recognised it as property. As such a proprietary injunction was granted over the cryptoassets. In this case, I acted for one of the defendants. This was a multijurisdictional matter including - but not limited to - regions such as Canada, BVI and the UK. This case led to include proprietary claims in restitution and/or constructive trustees or for the tort of intimidation and/or fraud and/or conversion.

In January 2020, new regulatory powers were introduced by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) for financial crime prevention. The regulatory powers allowed the FCA to supervise how cryptoasset businesses conduct their business with consumers. The FCA highlighted the risks involved in cryptoassets and, in particular, how the marketplace is a target for fraud.

Fraud and Cryptoassets

With the rapid expansion of the cryptocurrency markets and its largely - until recent times - unregulated growth, this new asset class has inevitably attracted fraudulent activity.

In the case of AA v Persons Unknown, Justice Bryan delivered an interim ruling for a propriety freezing injunction to stop Bitcoin from being dissipated. While this is a giant leap, the case raises more questions in the legal sector for future cases rather than providing clarity.

At the time of writing, the only other case in the High Court is Robertson v Person Unknown. This related to Mr Liam Robertson, a cryptocurrency trader and CEO of a digital asset management advisory business, who was a victim of spear phishing attack. Mr Robertsons email was hacked and the investment of 100 Bitcoin was misdirected to fraudsters. Legal action was taken against these unknown persons as the first defendant.

The Judge, Mrs Justice Moulder, had concerns about granting a freezing order given that the claimants did not know anything about the person who committed the fraud including his identity or his known assets. This proved to be an obstacle. Having said that, she did find that an Asset Preservation Order was an option. The court needed to be satisfied that there is a serious issue to be tried concerning a proprietary claim.

In both cases, the court was prepared to proceed on the basis that Bitcoin could constitute legal property and made proprietary injunctions and asset preservation orders.

Key Questions for Future Litigation

The cases mentioned earlier have considered some matters regarding litigation and cryptoassets. But other issues need to be addressed.

These include:

But with the right expertise and strategies, the above hurdles can undoubtedly be overcome. Cryptoasset litigation is a growth area in which legal practitioners are tailoring frameworks to recover losses for clients and courts are finding suitable remedies for victims.

5 Crypto Executive Predictions On Where The Economy Is Headed – Yahoo Sport UK

In 2020, the world has embraced uncertainty as the new norm. Market volatility has reached record levels, leading to a surge in trading volume and opportunities for value investors. Industries such as airlines, cruise lines, and rental cars have taken a massive hit as air travel remains down 90% and lockdown orders prevent travel.

Stocks such as Norweigan Cruise Lines (NYSE: NCLH), Spirit Airlines (NYSE: SAVE), and Carnival Corporation (NYSE: CCL) have all experienced recent upward swings as coronavirus concerns are easing as more companies, such as Moderna, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRNA), come closer to developing a vaccine.

For the cryptocurrency industry, these events have supported the old theory that cryptocurrencies will become the de-facto currency as the dollar decouples, inflation increases, and people become more concerned with financial privacy.

In recent months, the cryptocurrency industry has seen positive developments with higher retail trading activity and institutional interest increasing. For example, Grayscale Investments has been very aggressive in accumulating Bitcoin, at the rate of 150% of all new Bitcoin mined since May 11. Ironic, given the fact that Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) announced on a recent investor call that cryptocurrencies are not an asset class.

What is clear is that some institutional investors are more optimistic about the role of cryptocurrencies in the global economy. For the cryptocurrency executives working tirelessly to educate investors and the public about the benefits of crypto, criticism is something that they have become accustomed to. As with any emerging technology, new can often be scary and intimidating until more solid foundations are set.

To learn more about where the economy is headed, we reached out to a handful of cryptocurrency executives that have recently been in the news.

Crypto Executive Predictions are Vastly Optimistic

1. J.D. Salbego, the CEO of Singapore-based exchange BitTok, has experienced the ups and downs of the crypto industry since 2017. In the midst of mass economic and socio-economic turmoil, he sees this as an opportunity for crypto to shine:

What is interesting and what we might see is with Beijing taking over Hong Kong, there could be an increase in Bitcoins price and usage. We've seen in the past when there is political turmoil and instability in a countrys economic future, like with Venezuela, the public has had increased Bitcoin and crypto usage because of the lack of faith in their own central banks and national currency. What we are seeing again is a completely broken banking and financial system globally. With blockchain and crypto, we will hopefully see a higher rate of usage and adoption within banking, forcing centralized institutions to become more transparent.

2. Patrick Collet, Founder and CEO of MOOVIN, a blockchain protocol that democratizes and tokenizes successfully access to data, is optimistic that the US and global economy will not see a recession based on current signs:

The present economy is facing uncertainty as confidence towards the Federal Reserve is getting thinner. I dont believe we will see a crash per say because signs arent pointing at a recession just yet. Even though the US annual GDP is looking to come 40% short, there is a strong boom in the technology and e-commerce platform sector. I believe we will see a lot of market volatility in the coming months and even though DEFI and Fintech are becoming more commonplace, adoption for blockchain tech is clearly not a conquered territory. However, these sectors will eventually be mainstream.

3. For Quincy Dagelet, CEO of Boostchain, a company that is disrupting advertising with blockchain technology, mainstream adoption could be closer than we expect:

The world we are living in with COVID-19 is really unfortunate but it opened peoples eyes and led to more digitalization. Also, people tend to have less faith in banks, the monetary system and politics. This creates the perfect gateway towards more crypto adoption.

4. Stefan Hostettler, Co-founder and CEO of Tycoon69 International, a blockchain firm based in the UAE, agrees that we should see massive disruption in the near future:

Economically, I believe that we will see stagnant and outdated industries experience a massive wave of innovation and disruption over the next few years. This happened during the last crisis and was the leading factor that drove Satoshi Nakamoto to create Bitcoin following the 2007 crash. We are dedicating our time to building out an ecosystem to modernize billion-dollar industries, such as the gift card industry.

Story continues

5. Gabriella Davis, CEO of Centric, the world's first dual-cryptocurrency payment network, agrees with the legacy cryptocurrency community that sees these events as a perfect storm that will propel cryptocurrencies:

More than ever in modern economic history we are witnessing the end of an era. Fiat currency and central banking methodology are not capable of managing highly complex marketplaces. It is time to usher in new economic and monetary innovation, the launch of Bitcoin in the wake of 2009 was the start of a wave of innovation. Moving forward, in order to drive full global adoption a vision of currencies utilizing trust-less, censorship resistant ecosystems, that help offer a reliable store of value and an incentive to join the network while simultaneously limiting industry volatility will look to be implemented.

Conclusion

One thing is certain, the world will be watching as the rest of 2020 plays out and increasingly more curious to learn more about emerging technology that can help them better control risk and their finances. When it comes to transparency, security, and access, blockchain technology provides benefits never before seen.

Bitcoin Lies Continue as Craig Wright Testifies Using His iPhone Before It Was Released In 2007 – CryptoPotato

Recently released court documents from the ongoing Ira Kleiman vs. Craig Wright trial reveal the self-proclaimed inventor of Bitcoin may also have invented an early prototype of the iPhone.

In Craig Wrights legal deposition from March 16, 2020 released June 2 the self-titled Satoshi Nakamoto told the opposition counsel he had used an iPhone as early as 2006. The trouble is, the first iPhone wasnt released until June 2007.

The line of questioning related to email correspondence between Wright, Kleiman, and others in the period since Bitcoins creation. The plaintiffs, representing the estate of deceased computer scientist Dave Kleiman, seek 1.1 million Bitcoin from Craig Wright based on Wrights own claims that Kleiman helped to create Bitcoin.

During Wrights deposition, opposition counsel Vel Freedman presented Wright with a cache of emails that Wrights counsel had submitted to the courts. Wright claimed that many of them had been faked, forged, or otherwise fabricated by Ira Kleiman who represents the estate of his deceased brother.

When shown a selection of those emails, Wright explained that many of them could not have been sent by him due to his preferences in mobile technology. Wright told Freedman:

Some of these that are tacked together like that include sending from my HTC, I use a Samsung, I have used a Samsung phone since 2011, I have all the receipts for every phone I have bought, they are on the Samsung account.

Wrights preference for Samsung tech aside, the self-proclaimed Satoshi Nakamoto, also claimed to have once used an iPhone for a week in 2006. He told the counsel for the plaintiffs:

I also have one saying that I used an iPhone. I used an iPhone once in my life, I survived it one week, then I played golf. This was 2006. I beat the iPhone to death literally. So, if you ever see emails from HTC they are not mine, from iPhone they are not mine.

Arthur van Pelt of Dragon Industries, who has been watching the case unfold, tweeted in response to Wrights timeline gaffe:

Not really a surprise though, Craig Wright has his channels to use things like Microsoft patches, email programs like Bitmessage, etc days, weeks or months before release.

As referenced by van Pelt, this isnt the first time Craig Wright has been at odds with official technology release dates. In 2019 a Microsoft Word document presented by Wright was revealed to be fake after sharp-eyed observers noticed it had used a version of the Calibra typeface, which didnt exist at the time Wright alleged the document was created.

Craig Wright’s appeal over Norway’s jurisdiction dismissed in the defamation suit against Hodlonaut – CoinJournal

The court further orders Wright to pay for costs incurred by Hodlonaut both at the District Court and the Norwegian Court of Appeals

Craig Wrights appeal against Norways jurisdiction for his case has been dismissed by the Norwegian Court of Appeals yesterday. The defamation suit against Twitter Bitcoin analyst Hodlonaut was filed by the self-proclaimed Satoshi Nakamoto last year after the former called him a fraud. This is yet another setback for the Australian entrepreneur as his attempts to push the case to be tried in the United Kingdom have failed.

Wright originally sued Hodlonaut in the UK but the case was dismissed due to lack of jurisdiction in January. The UK High Court further ruled that Norway had jurisdiction because of Hodlonaut being a Norwegian citizen. The decision by the Norwegian Court of Appeals has confirmed Norways jurisdiction over the defamation suit and the case will now move to trial.

The Norwegian Court of Appeals also directed Wright to pay all costs incurred by Hodlonaut both at the District Court and the Norwegian Court of Appeals. However, this is only the beginning of the case and both parties have a long way to go.

Hodlonaut took to Twitter to announce the courts decision. He stated that the Norwegian Court of Appeals today handed down judgment on CSWs appeal of the December jurisdiction decision. Appeal denied. Norway has jurisdiction. Welcome to law.

The cryptocurrency analyst further stated that this was only a small win and a long trial stood in front of him. This stuff is only jurisdiction. Both Norway and UK courts have decided Norway has jurisdiction Only after that the real case starts, he said.

Hodlonaut told his followers that he believes Wright will be willing to appeal this decision even further and might as well take it to the Supreme Court. He will likely try to appeal this to the supreme court, he said in reply to one of the users asking if the battle was over.

Wright is expected to continue to push for the case to be heard in the UK. Many believe that the UKs loose laws on what constitutes defamation are the reason for Wrights insistence.

This is one of at least dozed libel and defamation suits involving Craig Wright that has been filed in the past two years. Other than Wrights infamous suit with his former partners brother, Dave Kleiman, Wright has dragged several high-profile members of the crypto community into court for publicly refuting his claims of being Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin. However, despite filing multiple lawsuits, Wright is yet to register a victory on a single one of them.

While I have a fairly solid grasp on how to play fundamentally sound poker, I often find myself calling a bit too often with good, but second best, hands when my opponents are willing to put all of their money in the pot. I have been working hard to plug this leak, and this hand demonstrates my progress.

In a recent $5,000 buy-in live partypoker event in Montreal, I started the hand with 280,000, which was a ton of chips at the 1,000-2,000 level. I raised with A Q from first position to 4,500. A tight, passive player who had 120,000 chips called from middle position. An excellent tight, aggressive player with 200,000 chips also called from the small blind.

The flop came Q 9 6, giving me top pair, top kicker. The small blind checked. I certainly want to make a bet to get value from numerous worse made hands, like K-Q, Q-J, and A-9, while also protecting my hand against various draws, such as 5 4 and K-J. Of course, I do not expect anyone to ever fold a premium draw to any reasonable bet. The idea of betting a large amount to try to force the premium draws to fold will almost never work. I bet 12,000 into the 17,500 pot. This bet easily allows worse made hands that I crush to call while giving the draws poor pot odds.

The middle position player thought for a while then called. The small blind then started thinking, and thinking and thinking, for about three minutes total. While he was thinking, I realized that the small blind would probably only raise with a set, Q-9, 9-6, or a premium draw. Against the sets and two pairs, I am crushed. Against the premium draws, I will win roughly 60 percent of the time. Against exactly that range, A-Q is in terrible shape, winning only 25 percent of the time.

While the small blind may occasionally run a big bluff, since our table was decently soft, I did not think he would want to make an overly risky play. He may also check-raise with a marginal made hand such as K-Q or Q-J to try to price out the draws, but I thought that was unlikely because it is a generally bad play, given I could easily have a premium hand. If he check-raises with Q-J, he will usually only get action when he is against a strong draw or when he is crushed, which is a terrible result for him. He eventually check-raised to 38,000.

As soon as his chips hit the felt, I folded my hand. The middle position player thought for a while and then called. The turn was the 3. The small blind went all-in for the middle position players remaining stack. The middle position player instantly called with 6-6, which he was quite happy with, but he lost to the small blinds 9-9.

I dodged a bullet! Maybe I am the next Phil Hellmuth.

In the past, I would have lost a few more chips in this situation, usually by calling the flop raise and then folding to the turn bet. Many players would simply go all-in on the flop, putting the small blind on a draw or a marginal made hand that A-Q beats.

Most players dont even consider that the middle position caller could have a strong hand. Even though this was actually a fairly easy fold once the small blind check-raised due to my poor chances of winning at the showdown, it is important to make sure you are folding reasonably strong hands when you are almost certainly crushed by your opponents range.

Bans on smoking and poker are part of plan to reopen Detroit casinos – The Detroit News

The Michigan Gaming Control Board has a plan for safelyreopening Detroit casinos, and that means banning smoking and poker, andgreatly restricting the number of people on the floor as COVID-19 precautions. Casinos are now waiting for the green light from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Bans on smoking, eliminating poker and restricting numbers of people on the floor are part of the plans to reopen Detroit's casinos, which have been closed since mid-March due to the pandemic.(Photo: David Guralnick / The Detroit News)

The plan approved Monday includes:

In compiling these minimum guidelines, we considered CDC recommendations, Nevada Gaming Board guidelines and information from the National Indian Gaming Commission, Richard S. Kalm, the board's executive director, said in a statement. "We required the casinos to propose reopening plans, and we consulted with the casino unions on the guidelines. We believe the guidelines will protect the public when it is safe to reopen the casinos.

The MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino and Greektown Casinohave been closed since March 16to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

The three casinos year-to-date combined revenue of $299.2 million was down by 51.6 % through May compared with $617.9 million in combined revenue reported for the same period in 2019, Michigan Gaming Control Board said Monday.

The revenue losses from the closures have impacted the casinos as well as the city and state, which collect hundreds of millions of dollars intax revenue annually from the casinos' more than $1 billion in revenue.

"MotorCity Casino Hotel looks forward to reopening our casino complex as soon as authorized by Governor Whitmer,"Bruce Dall, president ofMotorCity Casino Hotel said in an email Monday."Since closing, we've consulted with health experts, and worked with City of Detroit leadership, state leadership, the MichiganEconomic Recovery Council,as well asthe Michigan Gaming Control Board in its efforts to develop reopening guidelines designed to protect the health and safety of our guests and employees."

Dall said that MotorCity Casino Hotel'sguidelines include screening employees and customers including temperature checks, property-wide social-distancing signage and spacing in slots and tables, access to masks and gloves, and 200 hand-sanitizing stations.

Last month,MGM Resorts Internationalreleased a Seven-Point Safety Planoutlining the health and safety protocols it would implement in its properties, including MGM Grand Detroit.

MGM Resort's plan includesscreening, temperature checks and employee training, mandatory masks and personal protective equipment and physical distancing. The company's planalso addresses air quality and the operation of itsheating ventilation and air conditioning systems.

David Haye Dreaming of Being a Poker World Champion – PokerTube

09:5309 Jun

Former world heavyweight boxing champion David Haye has set his sights on being a poker world champion. The Londoner has switched disciplines following his retirement from prize fighting and looks to be as motivated as ever.

Its no secret that boxing champions have a work ethic unrivaled in most other sports. Haye now wants to bring what he has into the poker scene and establish himself as a world beater once more.

Many boxing champions have told how they lose a little of that fire in the belly once its time to retire. Not having that next fight to focus on negatively affects many of the sports former professionals.

Haye sounds like he is determined to make sure he doesnt follow that path.

His entry into the poker tournament scene has started off well. Last summer he finished in 40th place in the 100 + 25 No Limit Hold'em - Goliath Main Event at the Grosvenor Casino, Coventry.

Okay, he only went home with 2,000 but out of a whopping 9,300 entrants he showed plenty of staying power.

Flying out to Las Vegas for the bout between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder Haye showed how keen he is.

Only time will tell if he can continue to put in the insane hours that successful poker requires. If he does we can be sure that he will be a regular feature at the World Series of Poker in the future.

Odds of Being Dealt a Royal Flush – Royal Flush Odds and More – BestUSCasinos.org

Getting a royal flush is the hardest hand to obtain when playing poker online or in a casino. If youre wondering what your odds are of being dealt a royal flush and other hands, youve come to the right place. Weve developed this page to equip you with all the information you need to know about your poker hand odds.

In this detailed guide about your odds of being dealt a royal flush and other hands while playing poker, well provide you with tons of information. You can check out the preview below to get an idea of everything well cover. Feel free to click on one of these section titles if you want to jump ahead.

Before we dive into royal flush odds and other hands, we wanted to first ensure youve got a good understanding of the different hands possible when playing poker. Check out the sections below to look over all the different poker hands. Weve listed them in the order of their rank when playing the game.

This one should be pretty obvious. In casino poker and online poker, if you dont have a single pair or higher in your hand, you have whats considered a no pair hand. In this case, your hands value will depend on the highest card youve got.

If you end up getting a one pair hand, it means youve got two card values that match in your hand. For example, if you have two 4s, you have a single pair of 4s. While this isnt a powerful poker hand, it does outrank anyone who has a no pair hand.

Kicking things up a slight notch from a single pair would be a two pair hand. In this scenario, you have two sets of matching card values. As an example, if you have two Ks and two 10s in your hand, it would be a two pair hand. In turn, it would outrank any players with just a single pair or no pair.

As the name implies, a poker hand that counts as three of a kind has three cards of the same value. For example, if you have three jacks in your hand, this would create a three of a kind poker hand. If you end up with the three of a kind hand, youll have a better hand than no pair, single pair, and two pair hands.

Up next on the poker hand rank scale is a straight. Here, were only focused on standard straights, which means were not counting straights that are either flush or royal in nature (more on those in a moment). To make a straight, youll need all five cards in your hand to be in sequential order. As an example, if you had A, 2, 3, 4, and 5, youd have a straight poker hand.

Topping out straights and the other hands below it, a flush is another form of a poker hand. With a flush, youll have all five cards of your poker hand of the same suit. As an example, if all five cards in your hand are spades, you have a flush. For this particular hand, your cards do not count as a straight flush or a royal flush. Well touch on each of those below.

The next hand up the poker hand ranking scale is a full house. To make a full house with your hand, youll need to have a three of a kind paired with a two of a kind. If you have three 10s and two 5s, youd have a full house.

One of the toughest hands to get when playing poker is a four of a kind. Here, youll need to have four cards of the same value in your hand. As an example, if you had four queens in your hand, youll have made a four of a kind poker hand. With four of a kind, there are only two other poker hands that can beat you.

Second from the top of the best poker hands possible is the straight flush. The flush portion of this name implies youll need all your cards to be of the same suit. However, to make a straight flush, they also must be in sequential order. For example, having 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 of the same suit would provide you with a straight flush poker hand.

The king of all poker hands is the royal flush. With a royal flush, its essentially a very specific straight flush. For starters, all your five cards must be the same suit. On top of that, it must be the 10, J, Q, K, and A of a particular suit to complete the royal flush.

Up first, we wanted to start by presenting you with your odds of being dealt a royal flush and other hands when playing five-card games of poker. Most notably, this will include Five-Card Stud Poker. Weve included a chart below which showcases your odds of being dealt each hand in conjunction with the potential combinations and associated probability.

One thing worth noting is that the chart below showcases your odds of having one of the hands in a five-card poker game. This data does not account for any possibilities of wild cards or draws, which may be present in select games like Five-Card Draw.

As you can see from the chart above, youve got the highest chance of being dealt a no pair or single pair hand when playing a five-card variant of poker online or in a casino. Interestingly, theres roughly a 50% chance you wont have a pair or better.

However, you can see just how tough it can be to get some of the other higher-ranking poker hands. Even two pair hands only happen about 5% of the time. And if youre hoping for a royal flush, the odds of it happening are minuscule.

Since the royal flush is the hardest poker hand to achieve, we wanted to provide you with some visualizations to help you grasp just how rare it is. Check out the list of things below, which are more likely to happen to you than being dealt a royal flush when playing a five-card variant of poker.

Getting in a Car Accident 1 in 103

Getting Audited by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)1 in 175

Winning an Academy Award 1 in 11,500

Losing an Appendage in a Chainsaw-Related Accident 1 in 4,464

Going to the ER With a Pogo Stick-Related Injury 1 in 103

Up next, we wanted to provide you with royal flush odds and other poker hands when playing seven-card versions of poker. If youre into games like Seven-Card Stud and No Limit Texas Holdem, this is the section for you.

While the addition of two extra cards to work with doesnt sound like much to some, it creates a dramatic difference. Instead of just 2,598,960 potential hand combinations, playing poker with seven cards brings the possibility of 133,784,560 hands. That means there are more than 50 times as many possible hand combinations thanks to those extra two cards in play!

This chart focuses on your odds of being dealt one of these hands in a game of seven-card poker. As with the previous five-card section, the poker probability and odds below do not take into account wild cards and draws from specific versions of poker.

Immediately, youll probably notice how much better your odds of getting most hands are. In the next section, well provide you with even more information about how much better your chances are for each of these hands if you play a seven-card variant instead of a five-card one.

Thanks to the additional two cards, offering you the chance to make your best five-card hand, there are more potential combinations which can help you improve your starting hand.

Now that weve broken down the difference in royal flush odds and other poker hands between five- and seven-card poker games, we wanted to help you visualize just how much better your odds are when playing a seven-card game. Check out the chart below to see why you might opt to choose a seven-card game if youre hoping to land a significant hand like a royal or straight flush.

As you can see from the chart above, theres a 2000% greater chance youll get a royal flush when playing a seven-card poker game instead of a five-card game. Other hands which have an increased chance of happening when youre playing a seven-card variant of poker include the straight flush, full house, flush, and straight.

Interestingly, theres one hand where you have a lower chance of getting it when playing a seven-card game of poker instead of a five-card game. That hand is the no pair hand. Intuitively, this makes sense since there are increased chances youll make at least a pair thanks to the expanded cards youre playing with. In this case, your chance of getting a no pair hand is 65% less when playing a seven-card game as opposed to a five-card one.

Sudbury may seem an unlikely place for the birth of a legendary character of Americas Wild West but its not impossible says Suffolk history buff Peter Driver.

Alice Ivers, later to become Poker Alice was born February 17, 1851, she was the daughter of a schoolteacher.

Alice is quoted as saying that her birth place was Sudbury though some historians believe that she may have actually been born in Devon or even America.

The story goes that when Alice was 12 years old her family decided to emigrate to America.

The family settled in Richmond, Virginia, where Alices father secured a teaching role.

They remained there until the end of the American Civil War when they moved to Denver, Colorado.

In those days Denver was made up of mainly log cabins built around the silver mines and it was there that Alice met her first husband a mining engineer who was killed just a year later when a mine collapsed.

Alice was forced to look for a way to support herself, and, having watched her husband playing cards in a local saloon, she persuaded the owner to teach her to become a dealer.

This earned her the nickname of Poker Alice and she travelled many of the frontier towns following her new profession,

She took to carrying a gun and smoking cigars giving her the appearance of a formidable woman who made a lot of money and spent most of it on spending sprees in the city.

In 1892, she took a job in the Number Ten saloon owned by Bob Ford, the man who shot and killed the famous outlaw Jesse James.

She was dealing on the evening when he in turn was gunned down by a man who wanted to be known as the man who killed the man who shot Jesse James.

After this Alice moved to Deadwood, South Dakota where one evening, a drunken miner attacked a fellow dealer named Tubbs, with a knife.

Without hesitation, Alice is said to have pulled out her revolver and shot him in the arm.

Soon after Alice married Tubbs, retired from gambling and bought a farm where they adopted seven orphans.

Tubbs died of pneumonia in 1910 during a blizzard that was said to be so bad that fire had to be lit on the ground for four hours before a grave could be dug.

Alice did marry again but her third husband soon died and instead Alice opened her own saloon.

One night, after she had closed up, a group of drunken soldiers tried to force their way in and a frightened Alice.

After shouting a warning, fired through the door killing one of the men.

At her trial, she was found guilty but a kind hearted judge released her saying that they were unable to send a white-haired old lady to prison.

Poker Alice died aged 79 on the operating table after taking her final gamble in 1930.

Since her death Alice has been fictionalised on film in a number of different tv shows and films.

The most notable of these portrayals was by legendary actress Elizabeth Taylor in a made for tv film in 1987.

These days you can visit Alices home in Sturgis, South Dakota where it forms part of a local motel.

If transistors can’t get smaller, then coders have to get smarter – MIT News

In 1965, Intel co-founder Gordon Moore predicted that the number of transistors that could fit on a computer chip would grow exponentially and they did, doubling about every two years. For half a century, Moores Law has endured: Computers have gotten smaller, faster, cheaper, and more efficient, enabling the rapid worldwide adoption of PCs, smartphones, high-speed internet, and more.

This miniaturization trend has led to silicon chips today that have almost unimaginably small circuitry. Transistors, the tiny switches that implement computer microprocessors, are so small that 1,000 of them laid end-to-end are no wider than a human hair. And for a long time, the smaller the transistors were, the faster they could switch. But today, were approaching the limit of how small transistors can get. As a result, over the past decade researchers have been scratching their heads to find other ways to improve performance so that the computer industry can continue to innovate.

While we wait for the maturation of new computing technologies like quantum, carbon nanotubes, or photonics (which may take a while), other approaches will be needed to get performance as Moores Law comes to an end. In a recent journal article published in Science, a team from MITs Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) identifies three key areas to prioritize to continue to deliver computing speed-ups: better software, new algorithms, and more streamlined hardware.

Senior author Charles E. Leiserson says that the performance benefits from miniaturization have been so great that, for decades, programmers have been able to prioritize making code-writing easier rather than making the code itself run faster. The inefficiency that this tendency introduces has been acceptable, because faster computer chips have always been able to pick up the slack.

But nowadays, being able to make further advances in fields like machine learning, robotics, and virtual reality will require huge amounts of computational power that miniaturization can no longer provide, says Leiserson, the Edwin Sibley Webster Professor in MIT's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. If we want to harness the full potential of these technologies, we must change our approach to computing.

Leiserson co-wrote the paper, published this week, with Research Scientist Neil Thompson, Professor Daniel Sanchez, Adjunct Professor Butler Lampson, and research scientists Joel Emer, Bradley Kuszmaul, and Tao Schardl.

No more Moore

The authors make recommendations about three areas of computing: software, algorithms, and hardware architecture.

With software, they say that programmers previous prioritization of productivity over performance has led to problematic strategies like reduction: taking code that worked on problem A and using it to solve problem B. For example, if someone has to create a system to recognize yes-or-no voice commands, but doesnt want to code a whole new custom program, they could take an existing program that recognizes a wide range of words and tweak it to respond only to yes-or-no answers.

While this approach reduces coding time, the inefficiencies it creates quickly compound: if a single reduction is 80 percent as efficient as a custom solution, and you then add 20 layers of reduction, the code will ultimately be 100 times less efficient than it could be.

These are the kinds of strategies that programmers have to rethink as hardware improvements slow down, says Thompson. We cant keep doing business as usual if we want to continue to get the speed-ups weve grown accustomed to.

Instead, the researchers recommend techniques like parallelizing code. Much existing software has been designed using ancient assumptions that processors can only do only one operation at a time. But in recent years multicore technology has enabled complex tasks to be completed thousands of times faster and in a much more energy-efficient way.

Since Moore's Law will not be handing us improved performance on a silver platter, we will have to deliver performance the hard way, says Moshe Vardi, a professor in computational engineering at Rice University. This is a great opportunity for computing research, and the [MIT CSAIL] report provides a road map for such research.

As for algorithms, the team suggests a three-pronged approach that includes exploring new problem areas, addressing concerns about how algorithms scale, and tailoring them to better take advantage of modern hardware.

Lastly, in terms of hardware architecture, the team advocates that hardware be streamlined so that problems can be solved with fewer transistors and less silicon. Streamlining includes using simpler processors and creating hardware tailored to specific applications, like the graphics-processing unit is tailored for computer graphics.

Hardware customized for particular domains can be much more efficient and use far fewer transistors, enabling applications to run tens to hundreds of times faster, says Schardl. More generally, hardware streamlining would further encourage parallel programming, creating additional chip area to be used for more circuitry that can operate in parallel.

While these approaches may be the best path forward, the researchers say that it wont always be an easy one. Organizations that use such techniques may not know the benefits of their efforts until after theyve invested a lot of engineering time. Plus, the speed-ups wont be as consistent as they were with Moores Law: they may be dramatic at first, and then require large amounts of effort for smaller improvements.

Certain companies have already gotten the memo.

For tech giants like Google and Amazon, the huge scale of their data centers means that even small improvements in software performance can result in large financial returns, says Thompson. But while these firms may be leading the charge, many others will need to take these issues seriously if they want to stay competitive.

Getting improvements in the areas identified by the team will also require building up the infrastructure and workforce that make them possible.

Performance growth will require new tools, programming languages, and hardware to facilitate more and better performance engineering, says Leiserson. It also means computer scientists being better educated about how we can make software, algorithms, and hardware work together, instead of putting them in different silos.
