India and outer space ambition: First crewed mission in 2021 and geopolitics involvements – Modern Diplomacy

In the time of Covid-19 epidemic, the destinations of any kind, around the globe, must consider the probability of never facing a zero number, ie a full elimination, of cases. Especially Tourism Destinations have to consider a list of parameters regarding their ability to operate within a COVID-19 environment (or any other epidemic) and to respond fast, if they are to maintain their presence at the world touristic map.

Greece, as a country with many islands being separate tourism destinations themselves, faces a unique dilemma regarding the identification of destinations which can open to tourism, together with their when and how. Destinations aiming to open must also, on top of the national and international legal framework, apply:

1. an Integrated Plan for management of facilities, visitors and locals, so as to copy with incidents and crises in a flexible way, including even the unpleasant closing-and-reopening scenario.

2. effective tools to communicate their managerial sufficiency to all interested parties, especially to potential visitors and local communities.

The Project FLATOD-19:

The FLATOD-19 Methodology covers those challenges and strategic necessities, the main one being the high percentage of the destinations population enrichment, ie a weekly input-output of visitors of 30-100% of the local population, most of them with vague epidemiological status, risking uncontrollable outbreaks.

As stated by the Greek chief Epidemiologist, Mr. Sotirios Tsiodras, such (tourism) environments make the tracking of cases incredibly difficult, especially among tourists. Therefore, the presence of capable health infrastructures alone at the tourism destinations is of small practical value, because it is fairly easy for an outbreak to occupy the capacity and crush the existing health system. Conversely, it is of vital importance to implement methods of preventive control of possible cases transmission and, even more important, it is their identification and very fast tracing both at hotel and at the destination level. The issue of speed should be emphasized, as on top of the possible effects on the medical/ health area, there is another neglected issue: the huge indirect costs entailed by the delay of a well-structured reaction (flights diversions, quarantines, etc.).

The innovative methodology FLATOD-19 helps the pre-planned restriction of incidents and the rapid traceability of cases through the following pillars:

A) Destinations categorization based on the probable efficiency of opening and on the visitors characteristics (e.g. their country of origin) following always the performance of an economic and technical feasibility audit in the very beginning.

B) Formation of a collaborative Leadership scheme for implementing the project at any required local level and installation of critical-information management system (mini MIS).

C) Visitors management through their grouping in clusters, at country, destination and hotel level, by zoning and time-slotting techniques, starting from the booking stage until their departure.

TEAM FLATOD-19

Our methodology was developed by a multidisciplinary group of experts, scientists-consultants representing many complementary sectors of the tourism industry, living in four countries:

DISCLAIMER:

Since the beginning of the pandemic, our team put an effort or even envisioned to cover an expected gap in planning and to help not only Greece but also other tourism-based countries to assign practical solutions at complex problems, in the era of Covid-19 pandemic.

We would like to underpin that our effort, considering its research and thus innovative character, DOES NOT claim any completeness or perfection honour. Our model targets specific types of destinations, and has not so far fully incorporated some operational and marketing parameters. Moreover, in no case, we intend to replace the a countrys structures or any scientific organization regarding the provision of health data or the use of epidemiological models, although we plan to develop one focused specifically on tourism.

Consequently, we are declaring that we are open to collaborations with individuals and groups/institutions and we will be happy to meet and cooperate with any interested parties willing to offer to the common cause.

With honour and sense of responsibility

India and outer space ambition: First crewed mission in 2021 and geopolitics involvements - Modern Diplomacy

The life of a space pioneer – WHNT News 19

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. Alex McCool died in Huntsville on July 14, he was 96-years old. He spent 50-years working at Redstone Arsenal, first for the Army and then at Marshall Space Flight Center.

Alex was one of the people who made the Saturn V happen. His labor helped put the first human on the moon. But Alex McCool started working at Redstone long before that. In the mid-50s he worked on the Redstone Missile. It was challenging work and very interesting, and my specific area was propulsion, rocket engines, and the various systems that go with that, said Alex.

His statement doesnt include that the work being done was pioneering for the U.S.. We had missiles before that, but this was the first time the Army set out to build a nuclear tipped ballistic missile. The Redstone was never fired in anger, but a modified version of this weapon carried the first American satellite to space, Explorer 1. We could have been first, before Sputnik (the Russian satellite). We were told to sit tight, the Navy is going to be the one to put up the first satellite, said Alex.

The Navy was unable to make that happen, and the Army took over and was successful. Alex McCool was part of that. In 1960, he was also one of the hundreds of Army workers who moved over to NASA, and Marshall Space Flight Center. He heard President Kennedys challenge to go to the moon and he knew it wasnt going to be easy.

Getting in low earth orbit, now, dont leave that out. 17,500 miles an hour. To go to the moon, leave Earths gravity, 25,000 miles an hour. Nobody in the history of the universe had ever gone that fast, said Alex.

Thanks to work by Alex thousands of others we would go that fast, and within the decade of the promise, we would go to the moon, and a man would make that first historic step. Alex McCool wasnt done after the Saturn program. He worked on the Space Shuttle, which would have a remarkable 30-year run. Alex was proud of that spacecraft. Here is what he said about the Shuttles powerful main engine. How its the highest performing piece of mechanical system on the planet, the Space Shuttle main engine, said Alex.

That engine was incredible, and in fact still is. Its part of the soon to fly Space Launch System that will put the next humans on the moon. That will be the next part of the legacy of work done by Marshall, and the Army at Redstone Arsenal. Alex McCool has something to say about that legacy, and what it means to this nation.

Number one militarily, technically, technologically. Looking at the future and being able to attract other young people in the nation. Were still the greatest country on the planet, and we will be with the Lords help, and our own help, and the folks that follow us. We need them to continue, to keep this thing moving, said Alex McCool.

Theres obviously more history to be written by the men and women who followed, and will follow Alex McCool. He certainly left a light to guide the way.

What Went Wrong With Boeing’s Starliner Crew Capsule Test – Motley Fool

On Dec. 20, 2019, Boeing (NYSE:BA) made its first attempt to send an uncrewed Starliner spacecraft to rendezvous with the International Space Station (ISS). A successful trip would have set up Boeing to conduct another test flight -- this time with a crew aboard -- then to move on to performing a series of lucrative "Commercial Crew" missions under its $4.3 billion contract with NASA.

But the trip did not go well.

Because of a problem with the spaceship's computer, Starliner failed to fire its engines at the correct time, missed its rendezvous with ISS, and was forced to return to Earth, unsuccessful. And as we now know, that was only one of as many as 80 separate problems with Boeing's launch -- problems that NASA now insists Boeing rectify, in a list of recommendations made public in a press briefing last week.

Failure to fix these problems could hamstring Boeing's $26 billion defense, space, and security business (per S&P Global Market Intelligence data), preventing it from competing with SpaceX for future manned spaceflight contracts.

Boeing's Starliner "Calypso" crew capsule, back on Earth after its abortive attempt to reach ISS. Image source: NASA.

Because Boeing failed to complete its first uncrewed Orbital Flight Test successfully in December, the company has agreed to rerun the test flight later this year as uncrewed Orbital Flight Test-2 (OFT-2) -- eating the $410 million cost in the process. To improve the chances that this test will prove successful, NASA has outlined 80 recommendations for Boeing. The agency did not release full details on all the items that need to be fixed last week, saying that "the full list of recommendations is company sensitive and proprietary."

Here's what we do know:

NASA recommended 21 changes to improve simulation and testing of the mission before OFT-2 takes off. In particular, the agency wants to see better integration of hardware and software, and wants Boeing to perform an "end-to-end" test of all hardware prior to the flight. Shockingly, it appears that Boeing did not conduct such a test prior to its failed test flight in December, instead testing software and hardware piecemeal. This may be the reason Boeing failed to notice that Starliner's shipboard computer's clock was 11 hours off from real time, resulting in its failure to fire the engines on time, which in turn resulted in the spacecraft's failure to reach the space station last time around.

The agency has 35 recommendations to make surrounding "process and operational improvements," including bringing in more outside experts to review Boeing's test data, and six recommendations regarding "knowledge capture." In general, NASA will be performing more oversight of Boeing's work this time around.

Seven tweaks to Starliner's software code will be required, seven changes will be made to safety reporting, and at least one hardware change, narrowing the radio frequency band at which Starliner communicates with NASA's Tracking and Data Relay Satellites (so as to filter out interference), will be necessary.

Why so many changes, if only one glitch -- the mistimed onboard clock -- was the primary reason OFT-1 failed? Because as it turns out, in addition to that failure, there were other close calls that could have caused a loss of vehicle.

Notably, a bug in the software controlling the engines in Starliner's service module (which powers the spacecraft on its approach to ISS, but is jettisoned before the spacecraft's "Calypso" space capsule returns to Earth) could have caused the former to collide with the latter after said jettisoning, damaging Calypso to the point that it would not survive reentry into Earth's atmosphere.

Once NASA realized that, they realized how much work remains to be done before Boeing can be allowed to try again with an uncrewed mission -- much less one with astronauts on board.

NASA did not set a launch date for Boeing's OFT-2. Media reports have suggested a second attempt could happen as early as October or November this year, followed by a crewed flight test (CFT) in 2021 if all goes well. Steve Stich, manager of NASA's Commercial Crew Program, confirms that work on the spacecraft "is coming along very well." But even so, the number of software and other fixes that need to be made suggests there's quite a bit of work left to be done before Starliner can try to fly again.

Depending on how quickly Boeing gets this work done, it's likely that before Boeing sends its first batch of astronauts to ISS, its rival SpaceX -- which launched its first uncrewed mission successfully in March 2019, and completed its first crewed flight successfully in May 2020 -- will already be working on its second. As NASASpaceflight.com points out, SpaceX's first "operational crew rotation mission" (Crew-1) is scheduled to fly this fall.

Will that be embarrassing for Boeing? Probably. But at this point, it's actually the company's best-case scenario. As things stand today, SpaceX is the only company (not named Roscosmos) capable of sending U.S. astronauts into space. Until Boeing clears its OFT-2 and CFT hurdles, it will be completely shut out of this market -- and all of NASA's billions of dollars for crewed spaceflight will be SpaceX's for the taking.

How Ireland is setting up to be next nation in space – The National

AS the people of the United Arab Emirates celebrated the launch of the Hope Probe the Arab worlds first mission to Mars on Sunday, the team preparing what will probably be the next national entry into the space race was quietly going about its work with perhaps a pint of Guinness at the end of the day.

For that nation is Ireland, which is on course to launch its first space satellite next year. Its being built at a cost of 1.5 million, with funding from the Irish Research Council and Science Foundation Ireland as well as the European Space Agency (ESA) of which the UK is still a member yes, thats right, some small amount of British taxpayers money is going towards the Irish project.

DID YOU SAY IRELAND?

YES indeed. The Educational Irish Research Satellite 1, or EIRSAT-1 for short, is being designed and built by students and staff of University College Dublin (UCD), who are participating in the (ESA) educational Fly Your Satellite! Programme.

Experts from Irelands nascent space industry are also joining in. The satellite is both experimental and innovative and should help Ireland grow its participation in space-related developments an increasingly lucrative market.

Its also an educational aid in itself. The EIRSAT-1 team says its aim is to develop the know-how of the Irish higher education sector in space science and engineering, by supporting student teams to build, test and operate the satellite.

READ MORE:The Scottish firm helping people to reduce drinking in lockdown

It also intends to address skills shortages in the space sector by fostering collaboration between student teams and industry through the launch of three payloads that will demonstrate innovative Irish technology; and inspire the next generation of students towards the study of Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects by launching the very first Irish satellite.

WHAT IS THE SATELLITE GOING TO DO?

AT just 22cm by 10cm by 10 cm, the miniature satellite EIRSAT-1 is the size of childs shoebox but it is still equivalent in complexity to a standard space mission.

Most if its payload is experimental as EIRSAT-1 will take new Irish technology into space. GMOD is a detector developed in UCD to measure bursts of gamma-rays from the most violent explosions in the Universe.

EIRSAT-1 will also test the performance of thermal coatings developed by Irish company ENBIO Ltd in an experiment in the ENBIO Module, or EMOD for short.

Additionally the performance of a piece of software called Wave Based Control will be tested to determine how well it controls the movement of EIRSAT-1 in space.

WHAT DO THE MAKERS SAY?

DAVID Murphy is a student in the UCD School of Physics. He said: Im EIRSAT-1s system engineer which means I lead the design and assembly of the satellite. Its my job to make sure that all the different parts that are being built by the team work together. Since Im an astronomer, I have a huge interest in learning about the Universe and building devices that help us to study it.

I also lead development of EIRSAT-1s gamma-ray module, known as GMOD. GMOD will test new technology for use in the next generation of orbiting gamma-ray observatories. Its incredible to think that something I helped design and built with my own hands will end up in space. I hope the work were doing now will help many more students in Ireland have the same experience one day.

READ MORE: Covid-19: Irish PM concerned about visitors from the UK

Maeve Doyle is also a student in the UCD School of Physics. She said: I have taken on a leading role on the team, which involved a huge learning curve, doing satellite software development with a group of other UCD students.

The software we are now writing will go on to run on EIRSAT-1s on-board computer and will ultimately determine how the satellite behaves while in space.

The excitement of this task is matched by its challenges and responsibilities, as we are all taking on completely new roles and learning new skills. It took me a while to get here, but now with each new challenge my confidence grows as I think OK, I dont know how to do that YET, but Ill learn.

Joe Flanagan is a student the UCD School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering.

He said: Being involved in the EIRSAT-1 mission has opened up doors for me in the European space sector that I could only have dreamed of. To be involved in the development of Irelands first ever satellite is something that I am truly grateful for and the mission will inspire a lot of young students throughout the country who may not have thought that this was possible.

My role involves the design, testing and integration of the EMOD experiment into the satellite. I am testing the different components before flight to ensure that they will survive the launch and the harsh space environment during orbit.

WHEN IS IT GOING UP?

IF all goes well the ESA will be given the satellite to launch sometime in the first half of 2021. The aim is for EIRSAT-1 to orbit the Earth for a year, carrying out the experiments and gathering data.

SO IF IRELAND CAN SEND STUFF INTO SPACE, WHY CANT WE?

WE already do. Glasgow builds more satellites than any other city in Europe and the Scottish industry could be worth 4 billion by 2030. There are space-related facilities across Scotland and we could soon have our own launch base at Space Hub Sutherland.

The question is, how much better could we do as an independent country perhaps back in the European Union, just like our Irish neighbours.

NASA Proclaims Human Exploration of Mars is on the Horizon – SciTechDaily

This artists concept depicts astronauts and human habitats on Mars. NASAs Mars 2020 rover will carry a number of technologies that could make Mars safer and easier to explore for humans. Credit: NASA

During an event today with the Space Foundation, I was excited to be part of a discussion on how our upcoming Mars 2020 Perseverance launch and the Artemis program are critical to opening the door to smarter, safer human missions to Mars.

Throughout our history, people have always explored the world around them to discover the unknown, find new resources, expand their presence, and improve their existence. This primordial urge continues within us today, driving humanity to overcome what we once thought impossible. It is pushing our limits beyond terrestrial borders and farther into the universe.

We have a big agenda to return to the Moon by 2024, and to do so sustainably by the end of the decade. Our sights remain set on sending humans to Mars and the Artemis program will give us the experience living on another world closer to home. Artemis missions on and around the Moon will help us make our next giant leap while robots like the Perseverance rover pave the way for our first human explorers to Mars.

Among the investigations onboard, the rover will carry two that will support future crewed missions to the fourth planet one to produce oxygen from the Martian atmosphere and another to aid in development of weather forecasting. The mission will also use new terrain navigation and landing technologies as well as study how a potential spacesuit material is affected by the Martian environment.

Its crazy to think this, but we know more about Mars today than we did about the Moon when we sent the first humans to the lunar surface. The Perseverance rover as well as future Mars Sample Return and Mars Ice Mapper missions will teach us even more about the Martian environment and water resources before we send astronauts on the most challenging human exploration mission in our history.

Were going to the Moon with the purpose of getting to Mars I absolutely believe this is the right approach technically and politically. What do I mean by that? It means were prioritizing investments today in lunar exploration that support successful human exploration of Mars in the future. Both destinations are hard, but possible with our current approach.

Our plans for the Artemis program will ultimately lead us to a better understanding of the deep space environment, allow us to design and test common Moon-Mars systems and mature specific technologies needed for the Mars journey. The first woman and next man will land on the Moon by 2024 and help us take our next steps toward greater exploration than ever before.

Just as were doing at the Moon, we will build up our capabilities at Mars over time, and we anticipate sending humans to the fourth planet as early as the 2030s. What seems like science fiction getting a crew to Mars, landing them on the surface to explore and conduct experiments, and bringing them safely home is on the horizon!

Were planning for our first round-trip voyage to Mars to take about two years using advanced propulsion systems to enable a faster journey while limiting radiation exposure for our astronauts and other mission risks. Our preferred launch window will give the crew about 30 days on the Martian surface, which is ample time to search for life on another world. Other options could require crew to be on the surface for more than a year and away from Earth for as long as three years, but it will be a long time before we have the funding, technology, supplies, and capabilities to sustain such a mission.

In our new video below, we highlight just six of the technologies NASA is developing right now to push human missions farther in the solar system: advanced propulsion, inflatable entry and landing systems, high-tech spacesuits, a Martian home and lab on wheels, an uninterrupted power source, and laser communications.

While were continuing to refine our overall Mars architecture, I encourage you to read our new document, How Investing in the Moon is Preparing NASA for Mars.

Finally, dont forget to tune in to NASA TV for our upcoming launch! Perseverance is heading for the Red Planet at 7:50 a.m. EDT, July 30 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Go Perseverance! Go Artemis!

If youre anything like most parents, changing various batteries around the house is both tedious and strangely fulfilling. Its not like you enjoy making sure the batteries powering the scale or the smoke detector are new, and yet, once youre done with those tasks you feel more like youve made youre home complete. Now imagine youre renting an Airbnb and a week before you have to leave, you have to go outside and change all the lightbulbs and every single battery. Thats basically whats going on at the International Space Station.

Right now, as of 8:00 Eastern Time, astronauts Chris Cassidy and Robert Behnken will walk through space to upgrade the power system of the International Space Station. According to NASA:

Cassidy and Behnken will replace aging nickel-hydrogen batteries with new lithium-ion batteries delivered to the station on a Japanese cargo ship in May. During this spacewalk, the last nickel-hydrogen battery will be removed from the truss and stowed.

This spacewalk could last up to seven hours, so you can probably still check-in on Cassidy and Behnken during your lunch break. Heres the live feed from NASA:

Do you plan on sending your kids back to school this fall?

Yes. I trust that our schools are taking precautions.

No. We don't feel that proper precautions are in place.

I'm not sure yet. It depends on how things progress.

Thanks for the feedback!

Of the two astronauts, Behnken will be returning to Earth on August 2 before SpaceXs Endeavor comes and picks him up. Along with Doug Hurley, Bob Behnken was one of two dads who successfully launched aboard Falcon 9 rocket back on May 30, 2020. That joint mission between NASA; and using Elon Musks SpaceX rockets, was a historic one: It was the first NASA launch from American soil since 2011.

As the rest of the world tries to get its act together, its nice to see that in space, parents like Bob Behnken are still changing some batteries. We salute you.

Explained: Why Asteroid 2020 ND is termed potentially dangerous to earth – The Indian Express

By: Explained Desk | New Delhi | Updated: July 21, 2020 7:18:56 am It is not necessary that asteroids classified as PHAs will impact the Earth. (Representational image/ Getty images)

NASA has issued a warning that a huge Asteroid 2020 ND will move past Earth on July 24. The asteroid, about 170 metres-long, will be as close as 0.034 astronomical units (5,086,328 kilometres) to our planet, and is travelling at a speed of 48,000 kilometres per hour. Its distance from Earth has placed it in the potentially dangerous category.

According to NASA, Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs) are currently defined based on parameters that measure the asteroids potential to make threatening close approaches to the Earth. Specifically, all asteroids with a minimum orbit intersection distance (MOID) of 0.05 au or less are considered PHAs.

NASA classifies objects like these as near-Earth objects (NEOs) as they get nudged by other planets gravitational attraction resulting in their proximity to our solar system.

Even so, it is not necessary that asteroids classified as PHAs will impact the Earth. It only means there is a possibility for such a threat. By monitoring these PHAs and updating their orbits as new observations become available, we can better predict the close-approach statistics and thus their Earth-impact threat, NASA says.

NEOs are comets and asteroids nudged by the gravitational attraction of nearby planets into orbits which allows them to enter the Earths neighbourhood. These objects are composed mostly of water ice with embedded dust particles, and occasionally approach close to the Earth as they orbit the Sun. NASAs Center for Near-Earth Object Study (CNEOS) determines the times and distances of these objects as and when their approach to the Earth is close.

According to The Planetary Society, there are estimated to be around 1 billion asteroids having a diameter greater than 1 metre. The objects that can cause significant damage upon impacting are larger than 30 metres. Every year, about 30 small asteroids hit the Earth, but do not cause any major damage on the ground.

NASAs Near-Earth Object Observations Program finds, tracks and characterises over 90 per cent of the predicted number of NEOs that are 140 metre or larger (bigger than a small football stadium) which according to the space agency are of the greatest concern due to the level of devastation that their impact is capable of causing. However, it is important to note that no asteroid larger than 140 metre has a significant chance of hitting the Earth for the next 100 years.

Dont miss from Explained | Series of missions to Mars why, when

Over the years, scientists have suggested different ways to ward off such threats, such as blowing up the asteroid before it reaches Earth, or deflecting it off its Earth-bound course by hitting it with a spacecraft.

The most drastic measure undertaken so far is the Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment (AIDA), which includes NASAs Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission and the European Space Agencys (ESA) Hera. The missions target is Didymos, a binary near-Earth asteroid, one of whose bodies is of the size that could pose the most likely significant threat to Earth.

In 2018, NASA announced that it had started the construction of DART, which is scheduled to launch in 2021 with an aim to slam into the smaller asteroid of the Didymos system at around 6 km per second in 2022. Hera, which is scheduled to launch in 2024, will arrive at the Didymos system in 2027 to measure the impact crater produced by the DART collision and study the change in the asteroids orbital trajectory.

Cubs Convention has been canceled for 2021 because of COVID-19 concerns – msnNOW

John J. Kim / Chicago Tribune/Chicago Tribune/TNS David Bote attends a reception.

The Cubs Convention, the longest running fan fest in pro sports, is the latest event to be canceled because of COVID-19.

The 2021 convention was scheduled for Jan. 15-17 at the Sheraton Grand Chicago, where it has been held for the last eight years.

When we thought about producing an event of this size and magnitude in a pandemic environment, it was just not practical given the constraints of unknown hotel constrictions, Cubs spokesman Julian Green said. We still dont know whats possible in a hotel environment and given an unknown capacity for mass gatherings and events in the future, and other circumstances beyond our control, we felt the practical decision was to cancel it for next January.

The Cubs Convention began in 1986, spawning an offseason marketing event that has since been emulated by dozens of other pro teams.

Green said the Cubs could hold some virtual events for fans, as theyve done with season ticket holders in the last few months, featuring Cubs President Theo Epstein, general manager Jed Hoyer and Chairman Tom Ricketts.

There is no other choice for organizations than to be creative in this environment, Green said.

MLBs season begins July 23 in empty stadiums, and the Cubs open on July 24 against the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field. The games will be televised on Marquee Sports Network, which still doesnt have a carriage agreement with Comcast, the biggest cable provider in Chicago.

Green said the Cubs are still hopeful a deal gets done but had no update.

Green said the Cubs hope to welcome a portion of fans back into the ballpark at some point in 2020, but admitted it would be challenging in this environment. The 2021 schedule has been released, but the Cubs havent announced when ticket packages would need to be renewed.

We would love to be able to preserve some value for season-ticket holders this season before we start talking about renewals for next season, he said.

The Cubs have either refunded or credited season ticket holders for games that already have been canceled, and offered a 5% credit for those who put their payment toward 2021 season tickets.

Tickets for the team-owned rooftops went on sale Friday, and Green said the Cubs already sold a couple hundred tickets. The Cubs are one of the only teams with a view inside the ballpark, making Cubs fans among the few who can actually watch a game. One rooftop was selling tickets for $379 for the opener, while most games are between $199 and $339.

The Cubs gained approval from the city for night games on Friday and Saturday, which they said would allow visiting teams to avoid spending an extra day in hotel rooms.

Were very thankful to Ald. (Tom) Tunney and Mayor (Lori) Lightfoot, Green said. That is going to allow our team and the visiting team to limit nights in a hotel. Being able to fly in the day of the game will help limit that exposure (to COVID-19).

The Cubs are also working with the city to try to shut down Clark Street from Addison Street to Waveland Avenue for nine non-gameday weekends to allow street dining for the restaurants on the block that partner with the Cubs.

We think we can responsibly operate this, Green said, adding its clear we wont be welcoming fans in the distant future, so welcoming fans across the street from the ballpark is an alternative option.

Other parts of the North Side have closed streets, but that plan has met resistance from the Chicago Police Department because Clark Street is one of the busier streets in Wrigleyville.

The Cubs also would like to open Gallagher Way for a limited number of fans, though the city might be concerned about drawing crowds to the area.

Every decision we make will be driven by science and medicine, Green said. But at the same time, we have to find a way to keep our fans connected to this brand.

Picking up the financial pieces after a loss: ‘We planned life but we didn’t plan death’ – CNBC

Brenda Pickens and her late husband, Howard.

Source: Brenda Pickens

It wasn't supposed to happen this way.

When 63-year-old Howard Pickens died suddenly of complications from Covid-19 in March, his wife Brenda was stunned. Not only had she lost her companion of almost three decades, she now had to figure out how to get by on her own.

"We planned life but we didn't plan death," said 62-year-old Brenda Pickens, who lives in Waveland, Mississippi.

"I don't know where our heads were at," she added. "He was never going to die and life would just go on."

More from Invest in You:How women can lower financial stress during coronavirusHow to decide if tapping into your retirement savings is the right move for youNeed money? Find cash in these unexpected places

Howard owned a barbershop, Fade 1, in nearby Bay St. Louis, and the couple owns an RV. Brenda, who was also out of commission for two months fighting the virus, is now trying to sell both in order to come up with some cash. A retired nurse, she is currently on furlough from her job at a barbershop on a nearby naval base. She's getting a paycheck, but it was the tips she really relied on.

"Now I'm stuck with having to revamp plans, just for survival," she said. "Just to be able to survive."

The couple had only a small life insurance policy and some retirement savings, according to Pickens.

Luckily, she has gotten a mortgage forbearance for a few months and is using the money she's saving on that to pay the bills.

"I'm very concerned," she said. "It is all of the 'what ifs.'

"What if I get pink-slipped and no longer have a job?" Pickens continued. "I would have to sell my house, plus look for another job of some kind. There are so many unknowns."

However financially prepared, or unprepared, you may be, losing a loved one is overwhelming. Not only are you dealing with grief, but there are financial decisions that must also be made.

"It might be tempting to make a lot of decisions all at once," said certified financial planner Stacy Francis, president and CEO of Francis Financial in New York and a member of the CNBC Financial Advisor Council.

That may mean moving to a new place, selling a house, going right back to work and taking a new job.

Her advice: Don't do it.

"Give yourself a little bit of a pause so that you have time to allow yourself to start the grief process and that you give yourself time to navigate this new normal for yourself," she said.

"When you have been through trauma, it is very hard to think clearly."

Finding professional support through, for example, a grief counselor or therapist can help you navigate the mourning process. A financial expert, meanwhile, can help you through money issues concerning insurance, wills, debt and the like.

"Put yourself on a path of not only recovery, but to eventually be able to rebound," said Francis, who specializes in working with widows and widowers and is a certified grief recovery specialist in The Grief Recovery Method approach.

Once you are ready, you can review your finances and reset.

The first thing to do is to take a look at money coming in and how it may have changed since your loss.

You may be facing lower income without your spouse's salary, or you may have some additional funds through a life insurance payout or inheritance.

It is really important to see where you are and to then, once you have all of that information, start to create that new road map for your family

Stacy Francis

president and CEO of Francis Financial

If you have children under age 18, be sure to apply for spousal survivor benefits from Social Security, Francis said. Also, make sure you are collecting any life insurance money you may be entitled to, so reach out to your loved one's employer to see if there was coverage, as well as any private insurers.

Another potential source of money may come from any unclaimed funds. Do a search on your state's online unclaimed funds site for both you and your loved one.

The coronavirus pandemic has already hit people's expenses. Losing a spouse will add to that.

You may need extra child care or therapy sessions. On the other hand, you may see a decrease in some expenses, like a payment for a second car.

List everything and compare it to what you have coming in and see what needs to be adjusted.

If you have outstanding credit card bills, check with your creditor. Many are already offering programs, like payment deferments or a reduction in interest rate, to help people get through the pandemic.

If you are left with high medical bills in the wake of your loved one's death, talk to a medical billing and health insurance expert, Francis advises.

That can help you truly understand if these are bills you need to pay or if your health insurance wasn't billed properly, with the proper medical coding.

"We've also seen some individuals be able to negotiate with their health insurance," she said. "They just want to get paid. The last thing they want to do is have you declare bankruptcy."

Get an understanding of what your finances look like now.

That includes retirement and brokerage accounts, your home's value, your mortgage and any other loans you may have.

Taken together with your expenses and cash flow, it will help you form a plan for your near-term and long-term future and could impact college, retirement and the rest of your life, Francis said.

If you lost your spouse and have children, appoint guardians as soon as possible, even if you aren't ready to take a look at your overall will and estate plan, said New York-based estate-planning attorney Robert Steele.

When things "settle down," you can then update your will and beneficiaries on any retirement plans or insurance policies.

"Your will, your estate plan is going to most likely need to change, especially if you have younger children," Steele said.

That includes creating a trust for your kids if they are young, so they don't receive the money outright, and naming a trustee to oversee it.

Additionally, if you lost your spouse, he or she was likely your health-care proxy and had power of attorney. You'll have to choose another person "who you trust and value," Francis said.

In the end, coming up with an overall plan will help you move forward both emotionally and financially.

"While it might be frightening and scary to look at all of this, it is really important to see where you are and to then, once you have all of that information, start to create that new road map for your family," Francis said.

Donald Trump Showcases Four Years Of Red Tape Reduction At White House Event – Forbes

The White House hosted a midsummer South Lawn celebration showcasing the Trump administrations reforms and reductions of job killing regulations and red tape.

Donald Trump, July 16, 2020; photo by Clyde Wayne Crews Jr.

The event included, along with President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence, a number of cabinet members including Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross (unfortunately since hospitalized but apparently doing well) and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Andrew Wheeler. Two governors and numerous state legislators were also in attendance.

For over three years, the center of gravity of the Trump deregulatory program has been Executive Order 13,771, dubbed Reducing Regulation and Controlling Regulatory Costs. This directive requires that, in order to issue a significant rule, agencies must eliminate at least two other rules. In the process, the aggregate net new federal regulatory costs may not be greater than zero.

Many of the administrations cuts have been unprecedented, and its reductions in pages of regulation unparalleled, assuming they remain permanent. Trump boasted that agencies exceeded their mandate by cutting seven not merely two rules for every one added, and by cutting $50 billion in costs. A bulleted sheet of highlights was provided to media.

The author at the White House, July 16, 2020.

Trump hammered overregulations cost to families and promised many tens of billions in cost reductions yet to come in the wake of developments like: a new rule modernizing the National Environmental Policy Act and limiting the delays in deploying infrastructure; the repeal of the Waters of the United States rule; and the replacement of harsh prior auto fuel standards with the Safer Affordable Fuel Efficient Vehicles rule. He jokingly cheered the reemergence of incandescent light bulbs and dishwashers and washing machines that work.

Addressing Arizona rancher Jim Chilton, who spoke at the event as a victim of overreach of the Waters of the United States rule, Trump warned:

The hard left wants to reverse these extraordinary gains, reimpose these disastrous regulations. They want to take what weve taken off, Jim, and they want to put them back on.

Changes such as improved access to telemedicine spurred by 2020s health crisis that shut down so much of the economy were also touted, with the president asserting that, In total, weve taken more than 740 actions to suspend regulations that would have slowed our response. Such measures have featured prominently this summer in the NeverNeeded regulations campaign of the Competitive Enterprise Institute (my own organization).

To be sure, a substantial amount of regulation has been added during the Trump administration, too. Ive taken to calling these discordant moves (like antitrust, tech and trade interventions) swamp things, and see them as a genuine threat to the foundations of the reform enterprise. But the streamlining campaign under Trump has nonetheless been unique, explicitly taking on the administrative state and the progressive ideology sweeping the nation.

My favorite takeaway from Trumps South Lawn remarks:

Unlike the socialists, we believe in the rule of the people, not the rule of the unelected bureaucrats that dont know what theyre doing. We believe in the dignity of the individual, not the iron grip of the state. Our regulatory reforms are vital, not only to the success of our economy, but the strength of our democracy, and the survival of liberty itself.

In wrapping up, and before introducing Vice President Pence, Trump assured the crowd:

My Administration will continue pressing forward until we have made every last vestige of Washington fully, completely, and totally accountable to the citizens of the United States.

That would be quite the achievement. Back in 1996, when I wrote the first edition of my Ten Thousand Commandments survey of the regulatory state for CEI (in which then and now I urge that Congress rather than unelected agencies answer to the people for the burdens and costs of regulation), a Washington Post story on the report was headlined, A Think Tank Tenet: Thou Shalt Hold Congress Accountable. Trumps promise comes nearly a quarter century later. But better late than never!

With respect to the regulatory reductions promised in the near future, the president seemed particularly annoyed with a Department of Housing and Urban Development rule called Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing or AFFH.

In todays prolonged economic and employment crisis, deregulatory stimulus is needed instead of the flash policy (spending and more spending) to which policy makers always default in times of emergency.

President Barack Obama touted his pen and phone to expand government. An alternative I suggest is that Trump can use an eraser in 2020 to reduce it; aggressively so, but within the rule of law.

In order to continue the celebratory vibe and sustain regulatory liberalization, Trump will without doubt have to take a number additional steps unilaterally to achieve further deregulatory stimulus.

Democrats are all in with progressive expansion of government, so the Congress cannot be expected to assist in deregulatory stimulus even though there are stellar legislative options like a regulatory reduction commission and the Guidance Out of Darkness Act (or, GOOD Act) to require full disclosure of sub-regulatory guidance documents. In regard to the latter, Trump has, again uniquely, required something similar by executive order).

So what next on what Trump calls Job.... Killing.... Regulations? No telling. Many will be watching in hopes for something even more aggressive than as one-in, two-out.

I took a closer look at the cognitive test Trump claims to have aced – The Guardian

Like any smart, down-to-earth person, Donald Trump has been bragging about acing a simple cognitive test he took recently. Hes been doing it for a while now, but it wasnt until his interview with Fox Newss Chris Wallace on Sunday that he was challenged over it.

As the president started boasting about his results, Wallace laughed. I took the test too when I heard that you passed it, the Fox News host told Trump. Its not well its not the hardest test. They have a picture and it says whats that and its an elephant.

This, according to Trump, was misrepresentation. Yes, the first few questions are easy, he conceded. But Ill bet you couldnt even answer the last five questions. Ill bet you couldnt, they get very hard, the last five questions. He added: I guarantee you that Joe Biden could not answer those questions.

So what is the test and are the last five questions, as Trump claims, really so difficult?

The test is called the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), and was created by the neurologist Dr Ziad Nasreddine in 1996. Talking to MarketWatch on Monday, Nasreddine stressed that the test is supposed to be easy for someone who has no cognitive impairment, stressing that this is not an IQ test or the level of how a person is extremely skilled or not. The test is supposed to help physicians detect early signs of Alzheimers.

There are a few different versions of the test with small variations (such as the words to remember or animals to name), but the questions are generally the same. We cant tell for sure which version Trump took, but as he said he did it recently, Ive taken the latest MoCA test from their website.

Trump is right about the start of the test being easy. But when it comes to the last five questions, his claim that theyre very hard is unsettling (although not surprising) in what it reveals about his relationship with reality.

But before we dive into that, heres what the test involves:

The first few questions are indeed easy although it goes without saying that anyone experiencing cognitive problems is supposed to find it hard, and the point of the test is to help diagnose their condition.

First, you have to draw a line between numbers and their equivalent letters (1 to A, A to 2, 2 to B and so on). Then you have to draw a cube, and a clock at 10 past 11. Call it what you will millennial-itis, lockdown brain but this was actually a slight challenge as I cant remember the last time I looked at a clock that wasnt on my phone or laptop. So yes, it took me a second to remember that the minutes are all multiples of five for 10 past the big hand points to two. But I figured it out in the end, and thats all that matters.

If youre lucky enough to not have any cognitive impairment, this part is also easy. There are three drawings a lion, rhino and camel. As mentioned, there are a few versions of the test with very minor differences for example, the test Fox News showed during the interview had an elephant on it (you can see it here), but the latest test has a rhino instead. This has led some of Trumps critics to baselessly claim that he cant tell the difference between the two.

Both of these sections are very simple, and involve repeating a series of numbers forwards and backwards, and remembering a string of five random words. The final part, which Chris Wallace mentioned, asks you to count back from 100 in multiples of seven (100, 93, 86). Like the clock, this took me slightly longer than I would have liked but nowhere does it say this is a timed test. I did it in the end, slowly but surely.

This is where things get a little concerning.

If you remember, Trump bet Wallace that he couldnt even answer the last five questions of the test. But for a mentally healthy person, the last five questions should be as simple as the rest.

The fifth-to-last question on the test asks you to repeat a sentence out loud, before naming as many words as you can starting with F. In the following abstraction section, you have to spot the similarity between different objects such as trains and bicycles (modes of transport), or a watch and a ruler (measuring devices).

Next, you have to recall the random words that were included in the earlier memory section. This may be the part thats easiest to trip over.

And finally, for the orientation part of the test, you have to say what the date is.

For Trump to claim these are hard is worrying because for any cognitively healthy person, they shouldnt be. But before we start any armchair diagnosis, you have to weigh up two probabilities against each other. Is it really likely that he found the last five questions hard? Or is it more likely that hes misrepresenting about how hard they were, in order to look smarter than Joe Biden?

In the same interview, Trump got his team to pass him a chart that he said showed the US had one of the lowest mortality rates in the world, when it didnt do anything of the sort. This is shocking, but not surprising Trump has now made more than 20,000 false or misleading claims since he took office.

So it seems more likely that Trumps difficulties at the end of the test tell us nothing that we dont know already. His prolific lying and self-aggrandisement, two things we have empirical evidence for, should be what worries us. For, similar to his stable genius claims, youve got to ask yourself: how many smart people brag about their supposed intellect so much, and in such a misguided way?

Trump notifies us when hes going to be on Fox News most of the time. But not the last time. Why not? Because it was a total, unmitigated disaster.

For the first time, Trump was not allowed to ramble, change the subject, exaggerate or repeat his oft-repeated lies. He tried, but Wallace challenged him, corrected him, fact-checked him and badgered him into answering the question leaving Trump flustered, confused, angry, baffled and unable to substantiate any one of his standard big lies.

On the coronavirus, for example, Trump again insisted the United States has done more testing and has a lower mortality rate than any other country which Wallace showed is demonstrably not true. Trump also showed a stunning lack of knowledge about how bad things are and lack of concern for victims of the disease.

He baffled public health officials by claiming that many cases amount to nothing more than a bad case of the sniffles, that will heal in a day. He again insisted that the Chinese virus would someday disappear. Ill be right, eventually, he bragged, as if he were talking about the Astros winning another World Series eventually showing no empathy for those who might die in the meantime. In fact, pressed by Wallace for his reaction to over 140,000 deaths from COVID-19 so far, the best Trump could offer was, It is what it is.

On the Black Lives Matter movement, Trump doubled down in opposition. He again claimed, wrongly, that whites were as likely to be victims of police abuse as Blacks. He defended the Confederate flag, insisting it has nothing to do with racism. He vowed to block any attempt by the Pentagon to remove the names of Confederate generals from military bases in the South. I dont care what the military says, Trump told Wallace. He also twice charged that former Vice President Joe BidenJoe BidenBiden vows to fight back against foreign interference efforts if elected On The Money: Congress set for showdown on coronavirus relief legislation | Jobless claims raise stakes in battle over COVID-19 aid | S&P 500 erases 2020 losses Biden pledges to overturn Trump's travel ban initially on majority Muslim countries MORE had publicly called for defunding the police, which Wallace again showed was not true.

On 2020, Trump also revealed how out of touch he is with reality. He dismissed two recent polls showing him losing to Biden by double digits as fake polls. He claimed Biden was not competent to be president, insisting that Joe doesnt even know hes alive. And, like the wannabe dictator he is, Trump refused to say whether, were he to lose, hed abide by the results of the election. I have to see. Look, I have to see, Trump told Wallace.

Wallaces interview with Trump is the most disastrous given by any president, but it makes life easier for Joe Biden. He doesnt have to campaign. All he has to do is replay that interview over and over.

Its true that Donald Trump wouldnt be in the White House today were it not for Fox News. But if you live by Fox, you can also die by Fox. Fox News may have put Trump in the White House, but on Sunday, July 19, it killed his chances for reelection.

Trump excluding those in U.S. illegally from reapportionment – OCRegister

By JILL COLVIN and KEVIN FREKING

WASHINGTON President Donald Trump signed a memorandum Tuesday that seeks to bar people in the U.S. illegally from being counted in congressional reapportionment, a move that drew immediate criticism from Democratic officials.

The Supreme Court blocked the administrations effort to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census form, with a majority saying the administrations rationale for the citizenship question to help enforce voting rights appeared to be contrived.

Trump said in the memorandum that he had determined that respect for the law and protection of the integrity of the democratic process warrant the exclusion of illegal aliens from the apportionment base, to the extent feasible and to the maximum extent of the Presidents discretion under the law.

The presidential memorandum is expected to draw legal challenges.

There is no end to Donald Trumps anti-immigrant agenda, said Tom Perez, chairman of the Democratic National Committee. First, he tried to put a citizenship question on the census but got blocked by the Supreme Court. Now hes back at it with an unconstitutional order that has no purpose other than to silence and disempower Latino voices and communities of color.

The Census Bureau said last month that more than 90 million households had already responded to the 2020 Census with the majority doing it online. People can still respond on their own online, over the phone or by mail all without having to meet a census taker. Only this week, door-knockers started heading out to households in six areas whose residents hadnt yet answered the questionnaire.

Opponents of the citizenship question said it would discourage participation by immigrants and residents who are in the country illegally, resulting in inaccurate figures for a count that determines the distribution of some $675 billion in federal spending and how many congressional districts each state gets.

Trumps efforts to add the citizenship question had drawn fury and backlash from critics who alleged that it was intended to discourage participation in the survey, not only by people living in the country illegally but also by citizens who fear that participating would expose noncitizen family members to repercussions.

Associated Press writer Jill Colvin contributed to this report.

Why Steve Bannon would fuel Donald Trump toward victory | TheHill – The Hill

The Trump campaign is dead. Voters are getting tired of his outrageous statements. Joe Biden has an insurmountable lead. The 2020 narrative is like 2016 all over again. But there is a significant difference between then and now, and it is that Donald TrumpDonald John TrumpDHS expands authority of personnel to collect information on people threatening monuments: report GOP signals Trump's payroll-tax cut in Republican coronavirus bill for now Trump threatens to double down on Portland in other major cities MORE no longer has Steve BannonStephen (Steve) Kevin BannonWhy Steve Bannon would fuel Donald Trump toward victory Sunday shows preview: Trump, lawmakers weigh in on COVID-19, masks and school reopenings amid virus surge Navarro-Fauci battle intensifies, to detriment of Trump MORE.

Think back to the lowest point of the 2016 Trump campaign. One month before the election, the Access Hollywood tape was leaked to the press in that blow to the Republican candidate. Any traditional campaign manager would have advised Trump to issue an apology and grovel before a hostile media. But Bannon instructed Trump to stand his ground. He knew that far more important than innuendo and locker room talk in an old tape was a fundamental understanding of the mindset and needs of the voters.

As chief executive officer of the 2016 Trump campaign, Bannon captured lightning in a bottle. For a 2020 Trump campaign beset by leaks, appeals to ungettable voters, and the damage from the coronavirus, only Bannon can bring in the missing spark. It might be hard to catch lightning twice, but the president cannot afford to leave out the only person of his first campaign who pulled off an unprecedented win four years ago.

Since the days of the second George Bush, several Republican candidates would react to media trends and allow Candy Crowley moments to define their campaigns. The time that Bannon had spent at Breitbart gave him a unique perspective on how to drive the national debate instead of simply responding to narratives set forth by legacy media outlets.

Bannon neutralized criticisms of Trump, while hitting a crucial weakness of the opposition, by parading the sexual assault accusers of Bill Clinton into a room full of mainstream reporters for a surprise panel just before the second debate. This move forced the press to cover his checkered past with women and marked a tremendous turnaround on the ground just two days after the Access Hollywood tape was released.

Consider the current media landscape, which forces Trump to respond to claims that American society is racist and to coverage about coronavirus cases exploding in red states. While Trump struggles to find his message, it is Bannon who has the finger on those issues most important to Trump voters. Listen to his War Room podcast for a better idea of what the 2020 Republican bid must talk about. Bannon knows the threat from China and the loss of American jobs. Instead of Trump fighting the culture war over race, or arguing about masks, he should take control of the narrative and speak to the blue collar workers who sent him to victory.

When several Republican candidates tried to win with outreach to young and Latino voters, including in 2008 and 2012, Bannon knew the Rust Belt held the key to victory for Trump, whose odds fell to below 20 percent a month before the election, according to political forecasters. Rather than spending valuable time apologizing, Trump engaged in a spectacular blitz of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota. Each of these states had not been carried by a Republican candidate in years.

Unfortunately, the Trump team today does not seem to understand any of this. Demoting Brad Parscale for the establishment campaign experience of Bill Stepien is a lateral move. The 2000 Karl Rove playbook will not work for this election. Many of those closest to Trump in the White House and the campaign are not actual Republicans or even populists. The outreach of the First Step Act did not build the support from the black community that was expected, with Trump behind 80 percent to 6 percent among African American voters, according to a Wall Street Journal poll.

Many of those surrounding the president and the campaign may be loyal to Donald Trump the man but not Donald Trump the idea. There is little that their advice or appearances in campaign stops offer the president. Removing the true nature of the president will likely doom his odds of a second term. Right now, Trump seems like he is tired from fighting. He is down 8 points in the Real Clear Politics average. Some of his confidants are reportedly pushing him for left wing sops on the police and criminal justice reform. It is as if they learned nothing from the last time.

Trump can win. Bannon knew that the moment when he joined the 2016 campaign, and he refused to follow the schematics of Beltway insiders. Instead, Bannon sparked an insurgent approach to an outsider campaign. Even Trump himself has said that he was surprised by his November win. Bannon was not. If Trump wants to stay president, he has one of the two pieces needed for a victory this year. Pair Conway with Bannon and you will see Trump in vintage form with 270 electoral votes or more.

Politics: Here’s the most incredible thing about Donald Trump’s problem with facts – CNN

Which is stunning -- a mountain of exaggerations, half-truths and outright falsehoods constructed by the President as he seeks to invalidate the very notion of facts and truth.

But, the breadth of Trump's commitment to mistruth isn't even the most incredible -- or scary -- part of the Post's new report. That honor goes to this:

"The notion that Trump would exceed 20,000 claims before he finished his term appeared ludicrous when The Fact Checker started this project during the president's first 100 days in office. In that time, Trump averaged fewer than five claims a day, which would have added up to about 7,000 claims in a four-year presidential term. But the tsunami of untruths just keeps looming larger and larger."

As the Post notes, it took Trump 827 days to get to 10,000 "false and misleading claims." He got to 20,000 in just 440 days, meaning that between over that 14-month period, the President of the United States said 23 things a day that weren't factually accurate.

So, consider this: In his first 100 days in office, Trump said, on average, five things that were false or misleading. In his first 827 days in office, he averaged 12 mistruths a day. In the next 440 days -- through July 9 -- he averaged 23 false or misleading claims a day.

It doesn't take a mathematician (which is a good thing for me) to conclude that Trump has ratcheted up his misinformation peddling by almost five times since he entered office. He's not just saying some more things that aren't true every day. He's saying lots more things that aren't true every day.

There are two very important takeaways here:

1) Trump, unlike most politicians, isn't cowed by fact checks that show he is flat wrong in many of the things he says. Quite the contrary: Trump seems to revel in being cast as a purveyor of falsehoods by the mainstream media, believing it beefs up his credibility with his base.

What we have seen over these past few months is that as Trump's political fortunes have slid -- thanks to his botched handling of the pandemic and his tone-deaf response to the Floyd protests -- he has retreated more and more into a fact-free fantasy world of his own making. His pace of mistruths has rapidly increased as the actual facts -- be it on coronavirus cases, his support among people of color or his tumbling poll numbers -- turn more and more against him.
