Its a common phrase, that laughter is the best medicine, and EMS providers are well known for making it integral to prehospital care.

In the right context, laughter does provide evidence-based health benefits. Its been the subject of medical consideration for centuries, formal research for over 60 years and even cited as a cure for the famed Norman Cousins case during the 1960s [1-3].

Long-term physical and mental health gains for patients and paramedics are innumerable. With a focus on its more immediate, short-term benefits, it comes as no surprise that we are heavily reliant on humor within the emergency medicine environment.

Humor can elicit the following physical benefits [2-7]:

Humor also has the following positive effects on mental health [2-6]:

The beauty of this freely available, rapid-acting elixir lies within its universal language. Humans are naturally hardwired to laugh, so it is easily recognizable despite barriers of dialect, disability or environment [3,4].

So, with its limited adverse effects and minimal contraindications, why exercise caution in the administration of humor [2]?

Misuse in the healthcare setting can have devastating and long-lasting consequences. Patients and their loved ones may feel confused, embarrassed, ridiculed, dismissed and hurt by misdirected or misconstrued attempts to ease stress or tension, making them fearful of similar encounters [8]. Such reluctance to call for an ambulance has disastrous repercussions in terms of risk to future physical and mental health.

Also, with communication, behavior and attitude cited as the cause of more healthcare complaints than clinical treatment, we have a personal vested interest in avoiding offense through poor delivery or direction of humor [8-11].

So, how do we decide when to crack the comedy vial and when to dispose of its unused contents?

With its heat of the moment nature and the subsequent need to defuse high tension on scene, prehospital care can benefit through smart use of considered comedy [6]. The secret lies in maintaining compassion and exercising emotional intelligence to deliver it appropriately [8].

If we opt to include humor within our skillset, we must make it our duty to stay sharp in knowing when to use it and why.

Discrimination in the medical curriculum: are medical schools providing students with equal access to the medical profession? – The European Sting

India is the 2nd most populous country in the world. That being said, it is extremely diverse in terms of sub ethnicities, races, religions and languages spoken. Almost 19,500 different languages are spoken across entire India. And thus, this is one big barrier in providing efficient health care services to patients by health care professionals.

Ive grown up in the central region of India geographically speaking. And my entire life Ive been speaking English, Marathi and Hindi. I joined a medical university in the southern part of India. The day I joined the university, I was taken by surprise with the amount of differences I witnessed. Students and staffs mainly communicated in English and Kannada. I was absolute rookie to kannada language. I enthusiastically tried to learn kannada and some of my beloved friends cheerfully helped me as well.

1st year of medical school was comparatively easy to me because I just had 3 subjects to study anatomy, physiology and biochemistry. Real struggle I faced when I actually entered in 2nd year when clinical postings started. I was completely shunned down by the native language speaking students. I tried my best to learn the language in order to make my patients comfortable. Studying entire language along with the vast syllabus of medicine is difficult and gradually, my grades dropped due to that frustration.

But hey, honestly language barrier was never the issue. Real problem was the discrimination I faced because of this language barrier. Many professors prejudice that north Indians and central Indians students are mischievous and dont study adequately as compared to south indian students. Often before testing our knowledge and clinical skills or even our name, they would ask us the region we belong to. Some would even take the liberty to show their prejudice by their expressions and tone of talking. Some native language speaking students would even giggle at our rookie attempts to speak the local language.

Incidences like these demotivates incoming students, discourages them to involve into academic activities without any fear of being judged by the people around them. Medical School do not even provide basics of local language education to immigrant students in the medical curriculum. They are often judged by their skin colour as well. A fair skinned person is prejudiced to be belonging from northern India and dark skinned person from southern India. Same goes with the name, religion and accents. Groups are formed within the classes and students are addressed as entire group rather than being addressed individually.

Our fight was never against the variety of languages, races, ethnicities or religions. The unity in this diversity is what makes India great, they are part of it and we accept all of it gracefully. Our fight is against discrimination which leads to havocs and despairs amongst everyone including medical students. And we solemnly swear to fight until we make this world free of discrimination.

Hill Aerospace Museum set to reopen in August – Daily Herald

HILL AIR FORCE BASE After being closed for more than four months due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Hill Aerospace Museum is set to reopen.

In a press release, Kendahl Johnson, with Hill Air Force Base's 75th Air Base Wing Public Affairs office, said the museum will open Aug. 5 with modified hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. During the modified opening, there will be a maximum of 50 visitors allowed in each of the museum's two indoor galleries.

Robb Alexander, executive director of the Aerospace Heritage Foundation of Utah, said the museum has been closed since March 16, when the virus first began to surge in the United States. He said in addition to the visitor cap, several other precautionary measures will be taken. The museum will be equipped with signage directing people to maintain at least 6 feet distance from others. The museum also has received a large shipment of masks, which will be available to visitors.

Many volunteers who work daily at the museum are retired members of the military and older than 65 years old. The latter group has been identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as at risk for more serious medical complications from COVID-19. Alexander said vinyl shields will be installed at all visitor stations.

Located on the northwest corner of Hill Air Force Base, about 5 miles south of Ogden, the museum opened in 1984 as a part of the United States Air Force Heritage Program. The museum moved to its current facility in 1991 and hosted its 5 millionth visitor in spring 2019. The Museum has more than 70 aircraft on display in its two inside galleries and outside air park and features thousands of artifacts depicting the history of aviation and the United States Air Force. Located at 7961 Wardleigh Road, admission to the museum is free to the public.

The reopening is part a larger base shift to loosen coronavirus-related health restrictions, Johnson said, after a two-week downward trend in percentage of positive cases, both in the state and in surrounding counties. According to the Weber-Morgan Department of Health, there were 320 new coronavirus cases for the week ending July 25 93 fewer cases than the week before.

The entire installation is currently in Health Protection Condition Bravo, which means there is a moderate threat of community transmission of the virus at Hill. For several weeks prior to the move to HPCON BRAVO, the base had been under a HPCON CHARLIE designation, which is the second-most restrictive health designation in the Department of Defense.

As part of the BRAVO posture, the base also plans to resume in-person chapel services on Aug. 8 but won't allow congregationwide singing during services. Barber shop services also have been expanded, serving active-duty military members on a walk-in basis but requiring appointments for retirees and DOD civilians.

Base personnel are being instructed to continue adhering to guidance on social distancing, disinfection plans and face coverings, Johnson said, including no hand-shaking, frequent hand washing, cleaning of common-use items and wearing masks when social distancing isn't practical.

Boeing And Aerospace: The Art Of Touch-And-Go (Video) – Seeking Alpha

We published our last public update on Boeing (BA) and the aerospace industry on March 20th: "Boeing's Nosedive: From Leading The Dow To Asking For A Bailout (Video)." We were pretty adamant that it was a "must-hold" low or BA could go into an unrecoverable flat spin - the same flat spin responsible for the death of Lt. Nick Bradshaw. In the first line of our last article, we said, "It is time to go full flaps and put the gear down if BA is going to hold as a fourth wave!" Not only did Boeing hold, it executed a textbook "touch-and-go" maneuver, soaring back up 109%!

We followed the sub-wave path and had our subscribers ready for a consolidation. After getting a corrective pullback to a perfect 61.8% retrace on May 14, we were looking for a swing move up again. BA climbed another 99% for a perfect measured move! Since then, it has been consolidating correctively again, allowing for yet another swing attempt toward the 280 region. Whether this would count better as a 5th up from the March low or the C-wave of a 3rd is a little ambiguous, but as always, the smaller degree sub-waves will give us clues along the way.

But we did not only call the bottom on BA in 2020, we also correctly identified the top in 2019. On April 30, 2019, we published "Stall Warning," and in November published "Holding Pattern," showing the March 2019 high for Boeing as a major top that was not likely to be breached before seeing significantly lower prices.

In the following video, we again go over the Elliott Wave patterns we see on the iShares U.S. Aerospace & Defense ETF (BATS:ITA) as well as its major components. We examine how they have evolved off the significant low we pointed out. And we project what to expect in the months and years ahead. Discussing technical analysis in text can get a bit tedious, so we highly suggest you watch the short video where we can point to specific things on the chart.

As discussed in the above video, the vast majority of components in the aerospace sector and indeed ITA itself count the March low as a large-degree fourth wave, and the movement off that low so far is just the start of the larger-degree fifth waves that should continue to carry prices higher over the next several years.

The ITA only got three waves up from the March low so far as an ABC pattern; in a vacuum, this pattern is not in and of itself bullish. Quite the opposite, in fact, we look for ABC patterns as corrective consolidations, either retraces or bounces, before continuation of the prior move. So, how is it that we are seeing this bullishly? The answer is two-fold: context and an EW pattern called an Ending Diagonal.

First, context, as mentioned above, the ITA and most names count as a larger-degree fourth wave completed into the March lows as support. Elliott Wave Theory provides several guidelines for where fourth waves should target and hold support. While the drop in February and March was violent, it came into the ideal target support region for all of those guidelines. Not only did it hold support in the region of the prior wave (4) inside the Primary 2, it came back to the red 100% Fib extension of P.2, it was a 50% retrace of the P.3, and it also held in the region of the wave twos inside the extended (5)th. Additionally, though the "(B.)" wave of our fourth made a higher high; this is called an Expanded Flat, and it implies that the underlying bullish trend that began at the 2009 low is still strong. This confluence of context allows us to remain confident in the larger Primary wave 5 despite the initial ABC structure.

Second, the Ending Diagonal. A diagonal is an EW pattern consisting of five subwaves, but unlike an "impulse," each of these subwaves is an ABC move. The "Ending" part of the name just means that it is the final move in a larger pattern. The initial move off 2009 for ITA's Primary wave 1 was actually a Diagonal too, a Leading Diagonal. Another characteristic of diagonals is that the waves two and four are often deeper and/or wider than in a standard impulse. So, while ITA has already retraced more than 38.2% of the ABC up from March, it is possible that this is only the A wave in a wider and deeper wave (2). The B wave should bounce more toward the 180s, and there is a chance that bounce turns into the start of (3). Since the larger fifth waves for most of these names are targeting ultimate highs well beyond those seen in early 2020, the risk:reward is favorable for initial exposure. ITA's Primary wave 5 targets the 300s, and there is some nice Fib confluence ~370.

Moving on to the individual names, BA did drop far deeper than ideal for the same-degree fourth, but allows for a fourth at a larger degree to have completed. It clearly has the same ABC move up, but allows for a slightly different interpretation as just the B wave retrace inside the (3) of a larger Leading Diagonal off March. Even a "nominal" higher high in BA over the 2019 top to the next Fib extension easily puts BA at 711. While there is a near-term risk of a deeper retrace to 120s, current immediate support is 160-157.

Raytheon Technologies (RTX) has potential for an even more bullish interpretation off the March low. If so, it should really hold the recent 58 low; fading below that would most likely put it in the same wave (2) of a diagonal as we discussed on ITA. Lockheed Martin (LMT) perhaps has the strongest-looking chart off the March low as an Impulse. It easily counts as the start of a third already off the 337s. It should be in just wave 1 of that third. The larger pattern is easily heading toward the 600s, and there is even some nice Fib confluence into the 700s.

Transdigm Group (TDG) also fits well within the patterns shown by other members of the squadron. Though it counts best as one degree higher for a Cycle degree 5th starting, it too has a clear three-wave up structure for wave 1 of an Ending Diagonal. The ideal support for more of a wave 2 retrace is the 328-290 region, and the 5th wave up here can easily target 1161. No, that is not a typo, that is $1161 per share.

General Dynamics (GD) also has the same three waves up so far, which can count as the wave (1) of an ED for P.5. It does look a bit more bullish off the July low so far, but the wave (1) as is was slightly smaller than ideal for an ED targeting the 300s. 268 is the minimum Fibonacci extension I would like to see hit for P.5 in GD, but 324 and 364 are more preferable. I am open to a larger wave (1) in a more complex pattern.

Teledyne Technologies (TDY), while not as convincingly bottomed in a comparable larger-degree fourth wave as the others, has a more impulsive-looking pattern off the March low similar to LMT. Ideally, the 289 low in July holds and the third targets 745. Even just a measured move targets the 574 region off that support, so the risk:reward is very favorable.

Northrop Grumman (NOC) was not as strong as the others off its March low, but it is also important to consider that it held a much higher relative low and did not even get under the December 2018 bottom. You could blame a LOT of ITA's -53% slide on BA, but others got hit hard too. While NOC's -33% was no cakewalk, it was substantially less severe. It also has a very clear three-wave retrace into the July low as support, and a measured move off that targets 387-420.

Our Thursday webinars often end up being well over an hour, and this one was no exception. I had to cut the video short for this article, but we continued to discuss more of the components of ITA. Many other names support the bullish thesis for the next several years playing out, and show their own nuanced subwave patterns. Another standout that can certainly hang with the big boys is Kratos Defense & Security (KTOS). Where most of the large caps here count large fourth waves at the March low, KTOS can count a Primary wave 2. The move off that extreme is awkward because of the massive reversal bar, but it is hitting resistance at the .618 Fibonacci extension, which is perfectly consistent with the wave (1) inside a Primary wave 3. We would love to see a dip under the 12s for the wave (2) retrace to get close to the 38.2%. The upside potential here long term is as impressive as their orange painted drones.

General Dynamics cuts 2020 profit forecast as pandemic weighs on IT, aerospace – Reuters

(Reuters) - General Dynamics Corp (GD.N) cut its full-year profit outlook on Wednesday as its information technology and aerospace units grappled with coronavirus-led disruptions, although it signaled a gradual pick-up in demand for its Gulfstream jets.

The company said some high-margin programs at its IT business had come to a hard stop because of the pandemic, leading to a 12.7% drop in sales at the unit in the second quarter.

The business accounted for about 21% of its 2019 revenue, while adding 13.5% to its operating earnings.

Earnings per share for the year are now expected to be between $11 and $11.10, down from a previous forecast of between $11.30 and $11.40.

The defense contractor, however, topped Wall Street estimates for quarterly profit as it delivered 32 jets, up from 23 in the preceding quarter, despite challenges in making deliveries due to COVID-related travel restrictions.

When we look at where we are right now at Gulfstream, weve seen the beginning of what would appear to be an increase in demand, Chief Executive Officer Phebe Novakovic said on a post earnings call.

Novakovic, however, cautioned that it was still too early to tell the slope of recovery.

Executives and forecasters are seeing a rise in demand for business jet flights this summer due to a pick-up in leisure trips and easing European travel restrictions.

That, in turn, has led to expectations of new orders at business jet makers.

Sales at the aerospace unit fell 7.6% to $1.97 billion.

Its marine systems unit, which makes ships and submarines for the U.S. Navy, was a bright spot, with sales rising 6.3% to $2.47 billion. Total revenue fell 3% to $9.26 billion.

Red wall Tory MPs demand support for aerospace amid fears for 30,000 jobs – The Guardian

Tory MPs are demanding more support for the stricken aerospace industry to prevent mass redundancies, as new figures show more than half of jobs in the sector are in red wall seats won by Conservatives off Labour at the last general election.

The future of aerospace jobs is fast becoming a major political headache for the government, with ADS, the main representative body for UK companies in the aerospace, defence, security and space sectors, warning this weekend that a total of 30,000 jobs across the UK are now potentially at risk.

Analysis conducted by the Labour party and approved by the House of Commons library shows that of 100,000 aerospace jobs in England and Wales in manufacturing, repairs and maintenance, more than 52,000 are in red wall areas in north Wales, the Midlands and the north, including the north-west, Yorkshire and the Humber.

Tory successes in dozens of these seats last December allowed Boris Johnson to storm to victory in the general election as Labour heartlands fell to the Conservatives, leaving the party suffering its worst defeat since 1935.

Last week in the House of Commons the Tory MP for Wolverhampton North East, Jane Stevenson, who won her seat off Labours Emma Reynolds at the election, told ministers her constituency was home to aerospace companies that have seen an unprecedented and sudden collapse of demand. She added that Collins Aerospace is now sadly considering mass redundancies and asked what more could be done to help save jobs.

Nadhim Zahawi, parliamentary under-secretary of state for business, energy and industrial strategy, said the government had already provided the industry with more than 8.5bn of support, including through UK Export Finance, the Covid-19 corporate financing facility, research grants and the job retention scheme, and was discussing further help.

Other Tory MPs, including Andrew Stephenson in Pendle and Antony Higginbotham in Burnley, have also been lobbying ministers for additional support after hundreds of aerospace jobs were lost recently in their areas. Tory MPs in north Wales have also called for additional measures.

Last night Mark Menzies, the Conservative MP for Fylde, said he was asking whether more could be done for military aerospace, including Team Tempest the project for the next-generation fighter aircraft to replace Tornado. There are things that can be done on the military side of things that could really help, including on procurement and research and development, he said.

Labour accused ministers of betraying communities. Ministers have left our world-leading aerospace sector in a downward spiral, said Ed Miliband, the shadow business secretary. High-quality, well-paid jobs are being lost in communities that simply cannot afford to lose them because of government inaction.

The government must bring forward a support package for aerospace which protects jobs in our world-leading sector and helps it to lead the low-carbon future. The failure to act is a betrayal of so many people who were promised this government would be on their side.

Airbus has already announced it will cut 1,700 jobs in the UK, while Rolls-Royce has revealed the locations of an initial 3,000 redundancies in the UK. About 1,500 jobs are to go at the companys manufacturing headquarters in Derby and surrounding sites in the east Midlands. Approximately 700 redundancies will be in Inchinnan, near Glasgow, with another 200 at its Barnoldswick site in Lancashire, and 175 in Solihull, Warwickshire. There will be smaller cuts at Rotherham, Washington, Denby, Bristol, Ansty near Coventry and London Heathrow.

General Electric is to cut 369 jobs at its aircraft engine maintenance plant in south Wales. The announcement comes on top of 180 posts already lost at the site since the coronavirus crisis began through voluntary redundancies.

Paul Everitt, chief executive of ADS, said: The UK aerospace sector is facing a serious challenge as a result of the pandemic, with up to 30,000 jobs at risk. We expect the industry to experience a slow recovery before demand fully returns.

Since the start of the crisis the government put welcome measures in place to limit the loss of the high-value jobs provided by this industry. In the weeks and months ahead our companies will need further specific support to protect their long-term competitiveness.

We are urging the government to boost support for industry to develop low-carbon aerospace technology in the UK, make sure small firms have the financial support they need, and use the power of public procurement.

The usual glitz and glamour of the Emmy Awards won't be the same this year due to the restrictions of the coronavirus lockdown.

It's unlikely that the red carpet arrivals and step-and-repeat fashion commentary will happen this year but the awards will go ahead in some shape or form, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, on Sept. 20.

Star gazers will still have plenty to marvel over, including performances from some of the world's greatest actors - among them Aussies Cate Blanchett, Hugh Jackman, and Russell Crowe.

The Nominations for the 72nd annual Emmy Awards were unveiled on Tuesday, local time, and not surprisingly, Netflix walked away with a massive 160 noms, a record for any station or streamer.

HBO's miniseries Succession starring Russell Crowe led the drama category with 18 nominations, but while Crowe won a Golden Globe for his performance, surprisingly, he was snubbed by the Emmys.

On the other hand, Hugh Jackman received a nomination for his lead performance in Bad Education.

But it's Cate Blanchett who is receiving raves for her portrayal of conservative anti-feminist Phyllis Schlafly in Mrs. America.

The Hulu series has garnered Blanchett a nod for Outstanding lead actress in a limited series or TV movie.

Blanchett's performance in the star-studded show (which also features Aussie Rose Byrne as feminist legend and Ms. Magazine editor Gloria Steinem) examining the struggles of the American second-wave feminist movement was widely praised.

Blanchett attacked the role of Schlafly with nothing less than relish, imbuing a woman who is widely regarded as a female villain if not an enemy of civil rights.

Why did Blanchett take on the role of this nightmarishly anti-feminist, anti-gay, anti-fun character - the undeniable villain in a pantheon of feminist saints including Gloria Steinem, Shirley Chisholm, Bella Abzug, and Betty Friedan?

In an era when America is being torn apart by its inequities and political division - and some say is on the brink of civil war - Blanchett, an activist and human rights advocate, found the positive in trying to see things from a different perspective.

The Oscar-winning actress told Harper's Bazaar, "It's interesting that in everything I read about Phyllis that for her supporters, she was a Joan of Arc figure to be admired and revered, but I didn't come across a lot of people who were very close friends with her."

But Blanchett digs deep and gets to the heart of the Midwestern housewife whose only mission was to stop the ERA (Equal Rights Amendment) in its tracks.

"She was a mother of six, and between her activism and political aspiration and the kind of engagement with her family life, that left precious little time for her to have what's traditionally called friends," says Blanchett.

Schlafly lacked the sisterhood of intersectional feminism, says Blanchett, and her crusade - to preserve traditional women's roles as wife, mother, homemaker - was therefore "quite, quite lonely."

Critics have applauded Blanchett's interpretation of one of the villains in America's culture wars.

Leading film review website Roger Ebert singled Blanchett out for praise from the ensemble cast, noting that the Aussie star captures America's current Zeitgeist "brought to life by Blanchett's frozen smiles, flickering eyes, and a voice that shoots out like the gong of a bronze shield: to know something is wrong, do it anyway, and then keep doing it for as long as you can."

Punters predict Blanchett will walk off with the award - to the tune of 63 per cent, according to Gold Derby, which bets on Hollywood award races.

But Blanchett has some tough competition in her category: Shira Haas, Unorthodox; Regina King, Watchmen; Octavia Spencer, Self Made; and Kerry Washington, Little Fires Everywhere.

To date, Blanchett has won a total of 159 major international awards and been nominated for 341.

Mrs. America is her first Emmy nomination.

Wilson, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, and Irving Kristol were intellectual giants, who shaped the Western zeitgeist in the second part of the 20th century as they challenged the then traditional liberal thinking about the welfare state and the Cold War.

Trumpism, by contrast, is represented today by loud pundits on right-wing news sites such as Sebastian Gorka. These people are committed to fighting the globalists, the elites and the secularists as well as by academics like Trumps economic nationalist guru, Peter Navarro. These scholars have been raised out from obscurity after being portrayed by the media as the brains behind the former reality-show host who occupies the White House.

Intent on laying the ground for a new intellectual movement, a group of Trumpists gathered last July at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Washington DC for the National Conservatism Conference, where they tried to market their new intellectual brand. The idea was to provide an alternative to Reaganism in its neoconservative and libertarian incarnations.

Yet the gathering in Washington merely demonstrated that Trumpism remains inchoate. It is mostly a figment of the imaginations of jobless academics and ex-think tankers pretending to be the voice of a president.

Trump hasnt been very Trumpist, for one thing. The President who criticized unnecessary military interventions, especially in the Middle East, very nearly went to war with Iran. And while posing as the ally of unemployed blue-collar workers in the Rust Belt. Trumps only legislative achievement has been a huge cut in the corporate tax rate that has benefited the billionaires who dominate his cabinet.

Trump is basically a political opportunist who has exploited the anti-immigration sentiments in the country by embracing an us vs them agenda. Calling Chinese President Xi Jinping his great friend, he waged a cold war against the Chinese as part of a re-election campaign ploy. He has raged against the social media only to reach a backroom understanding with Facebooks Mark Zuckerberg.

Bannon, as well as other political figures such as Republican senators Josh Hawley and Tom Cotton, seem to believe that bashing China and attacking Silicon Valley would help them win the political support of members of Trumps electoral base, as well as mobilize the support of the American people behind nationalist and populist agendas even if Trump loses the election in November.

But these hopes are based on a misreading of the countrys political map. It tends to assume that Trumps election victory was the result of a political backlash against immigration and trade among unemployed blue-collar workers in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Ohio. It further regards Trumps election as the start of a grand political realignment, the kind that allowed Richard Nixon and then Ronald Reagan to switch large chunks of the Democratic electorate to the Republican party and win smashing re-elections elections in 1972 and in 1984.

But those re-election victories were a result of major demographic changes, during which many of the traditionally Democratic southern states started to shift their allegiance to the Republican side, as did many of the so-called white ethnics, mostly Catholic voters.

Nothing as momentous happened in 2016. If anything, the electoral power of members of the demographic group that voted for Trump older white Christians with no college education is going to diminish in the coming years. African Americans, Hispanic and Asian Americans as well as liberal young voters will determine the outcomes of elections even in what are now red states, like Georgia, Arizona and Texas. Old miners in West Virginia are out; young urbanites are in.

In that context, the cultural changes in the country, such as growing secularization and evolving sexual mores and attitudes towards gays, are not favoring the Trumpists who rely on the support of Evangelical Christians and conservative Catholics.

Reaganism thrived on the concept of the big political tent that brought together libertarians, national security hawks, Evangelical Christians, suburbanites, urbanites and residents of rural areas. Trumpism seems to be moving in the other direction, towards building a very small tent of voters. Small tents dont build global movements.

Marshall McLuhan regarded a countrys advertising as a treasure trove of information and insights about that country.

From an Irish perspective, Prof Anthony Clare remarked that, if we are going to be discussing the future of Ireland the role of advertising in shaping the culture must be included these advertising people are tapping into elements of what is commonly called culture for a variety of hard-headed business reasons they can give us cultural information but we need to keep an eye on them.

I think those last few words are a clue to why the vital role of advertising to reflect the mood and culture of a society hasnt been properly utilised; the academic disciplines that might be tempted are inclined to look down their pedagogic noses at advertising, which is why Dr Patricia Medcalfs book is not only welcome but ground-breaking.

The time period she has chosen, 1959-1999, is particularly apposite. 1959 was at the heart of one of the most dramatic periods of Irish social, cultural and economic history. 1958 saw the publication of the first programme for economic expansion; Irelands opening up to the wider world. In 1959, de Valera finally handed over the reins of power to Sean Lemass and 1960 saw the election of John F Kennedy as president of the US, giving us a new sense of self confidence. RT began transmission in 1961, bringing the rest of the world to our living rooms and in 1962 Vatican II provided another significant break with the past.

The closing date is also significant. 1999 initiated the birth of the digital era; Google was less than a year old but, together with Facebook, it would grow into a monster of Frankenstein proportions, promising more accurate targeting for advertisers, but all too often at the expense of creativity.

The result was a global efficiency pandemic where famous creative campaigns were banished into lockdown. A recent report from the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising in London concluded that advertising, has become flat, abstracted, dislocated and devitalised it has lost its humanity-and become dislocated from its time and place. So, it looks like the 40 years covered in this book will be looked back on as the golden age of TV advertising in Ireland.

Those years were of course a time of seismic transformation in Ireland, one of the most dramatic being the change in the status of women as almost every barrier to female advancement was beginning to be dismantled. Guinness advertising reflected this throughout the four decades, from the amusingly direct approach in the 1970s Trousers and Guinness were only for men, but now that youre wearing the trousers isnt it time you had a Guinness to the more sexually explicit Monogamy in the 1990s, which the author discreetly describes as a story of love, lust, betrayal and disappointment.

I was delighted to see that the only TV ad Medcalf reprints is the entire voiceover is the classic I Believe ad featuring the great Stanley Townsends delivery on Sandymount Strand standing in the shadow of the Poolbeg chimneys: I believe the DART should run to Tallaght, I believe in flushing toilets, washing your hands and leaving the seat down. Isnt it amazing how prescient those who work in advertising are; the DART (well, Luas) now runs to Tallaght and were all washing our hands and leaving the toilet seat down.

The book also comments on an underlying tension in the relations between local marketing departments and agencies and head office marketing teams and their global agencies. This inevitably leads to problems when a global agency is imposed on the local market. One London agency, HHCL, launched a disastrous Big Pint series of commercials in the 1990s and Medcalf doesnt pull any punches in stating that, they convey a lack of understanding of the Irish psyche and Guinnesss deep associations with Irish culture.

An important theme running through the book is whether advertising is a driver to or a reactor of social change. This is a subject that comes up regularly and although academia, to some extent, and the media often regard advertising as having the capacity to play an active role in society, those who work at the coalface tend to be more sceptical and incline to the belief that advertising reflects society rather than shapes it.

Medcalf takes an admirably nuanced approach, pointing out on the issue of female emancipation that it is difficult to conclude that Guinness was responsible for the gradual change on the status of women in society, however, its ads probably supported the movement by normalising images of women in pubs or engaging in activities traditionally associated with men.

At the heart of this book is the important subject of cultural branding. Cultural consumption theory acknowledges that goods not only have a utilitarian character but are also able to carry and communicate cultural meaning. Sometimes this is deliberate and today we see numerous examples of brands consciously adopting positions on societal issues to demonstrate brand purpose.

Nikes campaign featuring American footballer Colin Kaepernick, Believe in something even if it means sacrificing everything, is a good current example. But often cultural meaning can be communicated unconsciously through a combination of insights gathered from detailed research among the population that precedes major advertising campaigns and the innate feel for zeitgeist that characterises the best creative teams. This study of the last 40 years of the 20th century through the lens of Irelands most iconic brand is a good example of how a study of cultural branding can illuminate aspects of that period.

Im not suggesting that Advertising the Black Stuff should replace the collected works of Diarmaid Ferritter and Roy Foster, but it can augment what they have to say and hopefully it may inspire other academics to dip their toes into advertisings Aladdins cave and add to our understanding of our collective times past and present.

You Can Finally Own a Good Ghost in the Shell Movie in 4K – Gizmodo UK

I mean, the 2017 film was at the least pretty to look at in UHD. That couldnt save the everything else, though.

Twenty-five years ago, Production I.G. and Mamoru Oshiis seminal adaptation of the classic Masamune Shirow seinen manga provided us a neon-soaked vision of the future, and influenced the way we talk about and consider the design of cyberpunk aesthetics to this day. And now, to celebrate, the original movie is being released in 4K for the first time in September by Lionsgate. Heres a trailer the studio put out for a 4K release in 1080p, because... hmm. Anyway, it still looks good:

Set in in 2029, Ghost in the Shell follows the missions of Public Security Section 9 in New Port City, an elite police taskforce helmed by the cyborg Major Matoko Kusanagi. While navigating her own identity as one of the titular ghosts in the shell a human consciousness in an entirely cybernetic body the Major is tasked with hunting down a mysterious hacker known only as the Puppet Master, who begins targeting cybernetically enhanced officials with a debilitating virus.

The UHD/Blu-ray edition of the film will come with cover art re-utilising Martin Ansins stunning poster art for Mondo, and remasters the film in both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. As well as an audio commentary from Mary Claypool (Ghost in the Shells English-language scriptwriter), Eric Calderon (animation producer and writer), Richard Epcar (who voiced Batou in the dub) and Charles Solomon (animation historian and critic), the release includes two new featurettes, one offering a retrospective of 25 years of the animated franchise, and another examining the architecture of its cyberpunk future.

Ghost in the Shell comes to 4K UHD on September 8th, both physically and digitally.

Politics is a year-round sport, but the season is intensifying with the coming of the 2020 presidential election.With it, relationships between family members, friends and strangers will become more contentious, strained and precarious.

It doesnt take a prophet or the son or daughter of a prophet to see what is coming: a tsunami of conflicts between individuals of different political perspectives.

Often these conflicts are exacerbated by a deluge of unflattering visual images, provocative sound bites and caustic memes that flood Facebook, Instagram and other social media. So, in this political season, is there Christian wisdom available for the survival of interpersonal relationships?

Folks who at least nominally want to portray themselves as Christian in their relationships frequently turn toward the Bible for inspiration and guidance.The Bible is a reasonable place to search for such wisdom, since it is replete with stories about interpersonal relationships between family members, tribes, enemies and especially between God and humanity.

Of course, as Samuel Sandmel notes: More people praise the Bible than read it.More read it than understand it, and more understand it than conscientiously follow it. Nevertheless, the Bible does provide wise counsel on how one can approach interpersonal relationships, and perhaps no passage is so oft quoted or better known thanDo to others as you would have them do to you, which is found in Luke 6:31.

Empathy is understanding how another feels.

This passage, the Golden Rule, speaks about empathy as an approach for personal relationships.Former news anchor Dan Rather captured the essence of empathy in his book,What Unites Us: Reflections on Patriotism.He described his own hardscrabble upbringing in Texas during the Great Depression of the 1930s and how his family at Christmas, even with their own meager existence, would give to others.On one occasion, he writes, I asked my mother why we gave those families gifts at Christmas when we ourselves didnt have much. I remember then answering for myself: It was because we felt sorry for them, right? We do not feel sorry for them, my mother said sternly. We understand how they feel.

Thats a good definition of empathy, understanding how another feels. In the biblical concept of incarnation, its the very reason Jesus walked among us. Cultivating empathy for another is a way of pouring oil on the troubled waters caused by political disagreements. But heres the rub: In todays politically charged climate, empathy is probably not going to work.The Golden Rule has become tarnished, and heres why.

In a fascinating study on empathy that has been going on for decades, researchers have shown the practice of empathy is on the decline. Between 2000 and 2009 alone, it declined 40%. While empathy is declining, of course its not going away; but even the way empathy is practiced today is troubling.

This is the dark side of empathy. Its the type of empathy Jesus warned about.

Researchers discovered a trend, one we all have intuited: empathy can be practiced selectively. So today, empathy might be extended for my team, my political party, my candidate, my agenda, but not yours.In fact, I will become righteously indignant when you hurt my fill-in-the-blank, but I could care less about your fill-in-the-blank.

This is the dark side of empathy. Its the type of empathy Jesus warned about in Luke 6:33: If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you?For even sinners do the same.

If the guiding words of Jesus are failing to be heard or are being twisted, where does this leave us?Nov. 3 is coming.

Perhaps we need a reboot to one of humanitys most basic operating systems for engagement of interpersonal relationships.Its biblical, universal and simple, with no complicated ethical theory of communication or interactions.Its a modest and unpretentious moral form of guidance for both Christians and non-Christians in this political season, found in Ephesians 4:32: Be kind to one another.

Be kind to one to another.Thats it.Be kind. It seems a little pollyannaish and a bit simplistic, but one must admit, its not an approach that needs lengthy explanation to even the most vitriolic spewer of venom.You cant really confuse and obfuscate the imperative to be kind.

Expressing kindness in all relationships does not mean one has to agree on political agendas related to life/choice, immigration, guns, race or a host of other issues. And one does not have to give up his or her sincerely held political perspectives to be kind both in words and acts. Kindness is a type of bedrock that can allow for the possibility that conflictual you vs. me relationships might, in the words of Martin Buber, become loving I-thou relationships.

Mark Twain once wrote: Do the right thing.It will gratify some people and astonish the rest.In todays political climate, and with respect to Twain, perhaps we can enter the political season with the thought, Be kind.It will gratify some people and astonish the rest.

The Americans with Disabilities Act at 30 | UDaily – UDaily

One in four Americans (26%) has a disability of some kind it may be serious difficulty with mobility, cognition, hearing, vision, independent living.

The Americans with Disabilities Act, designed to protect people with disabilities from discrimination, was passed into law 30 years ago, on July 26, 1990.

A few years before the ADA came into being, Karl Booksh broke his neck playing flag football as a freshman in college. The injury would put Booksh in a wheelchair, but it didnt stop him from pursuing the career he always wanted to be an educator. Originally, he thought he wanted to be a high school teacher, but then he fell in love with research and revised his plans.

He went on to earn a bachelor of science in chemistry with honors from the University of Alaska, a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Washington, and a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship prior to joining the faculty of the University of Delawares Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in 1998. Since then, hes been leading a thriving research program at UD in the development of chemical sensors for environmental, biomedical and industrial monitoring. Hes published more than 100 scientific papers and holds five patents.

Booksh also has been an outspoken advocate for people with disabilities, particularly in academia. Hes on the board of OXIDE, the Open Chemistry Collaborative In Diversity Equity, established by the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health and Department of Energy. He is a past chair of the American Chemical Societys Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Board and the Committee on Chemists with Disabilities. Currently, he is president-elect of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy, where he is working to establish its first diversity and inclusion committee. He also has pioneered an NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program at UD to encourage more students with disabilities to continue on for their doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

In recognition of the ADAs 30th anniversary this year, UDaily asked Booksh about the headway he has seen and the work yet to be done, from his perspective.

Q: Since the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990, what progress have you seen in stamping out discrimination against people with disabilities?

Booksh: I broke my neck a couple of years before the ADA, so I sort of grew up as it was forming. Ive honestly seen more progress on the West Coast than on the East Coast because of newer buildings and infrastructure on the West Coast, including the integration of Braille signage. On the East Coast, there are so many historic buildings with steps. Its harder to incorporate elevators into these older buildings. A good friend who is blind said he feels there is more progress in cities through technology, with apps. But I still have a lot of challenges with buses and public transportation. And right now, Im stuck at my parents place while the elevator in my house is being fixed. You just cant get a ranch house thats move-in ready you have to retrofit it somehow. But thats just the physical side of things.

Q: What about the social side?

Booksh: The social side is much more interesting. Were still the only underrepresented group that cant control its own language, and Im a proponent of free speech. What I mean is that we still hear these disability pejoratives words like gimp, retard, lame. Can you imagine if that were still the case with other diverse communities, especially with the growth of movements like Black Lives Matter? But you dont see or hear much about us in the media. Instead, people with disabilities seem to fall into one of three archetypes on TV: (1) were evil (disability is a metaphor for evil); (2) were the vessel for other people to show their compassion; or (3) we all have to be computer people because God knows we cant do anything else. By contrast, in Ozark on Netflix, one of the strong characters was Ben, who had bipolar disorder. They did a good job presenting his life and problems in a way that was appropriate and sympathetic. And then they had to go kill him off.

Q: What are still some of the biggest challenges?

Booksh: One of the biggest challenges is getting people to look at the data. There has to be recognition and forethought. One in four people in the U.S. has a disability, and they are not all visible, physical disabilities. I find it very interesting that few people know the name Tony Timpa. He lived in Texas and happened to be from a wealthy family. He had schizophrenia and depression. He was off his meds, was at a store and got afraid. His mother had always told him to call the police for help. He did that, and he ended up being restrained by police officers and died in the same manner as George Floyd. Yet there was no media coverage beyond the Dallas area. What I believe were seeing is police officers not being trained to recognize things outside of their normal. The psychological disability, the deaf person who might not hear an order.

Q: Do you think fear is part of it, that some people dont know how to interact with a person who has a psychological or physical disability?

Booksh: Its true. Some people dont know how to respond. Even other people in wheelchairs will talk about how people will not talk to you theyll talk to the person beside you. What does he want? As though you dont have the ability to answer. You need to go into that interaction not thinking, How do I survive this encounter, but rather, what does this person need?

Q: How is UD doing on this front? Do we offer programs or approaches that you have found to be particularly effective?

Booksh: Ill give you my top example that cannot be highlighted enough. The University of Delaware Center for Disabilities Studies is not just succeeding but excelling. They are respected across the state and across the nation. They are helping people lead enriched lives take getting access to needed health care, as just one major area. Wheelchair-accessible dental chairs and doctors examining tables are rare. And just getting a child, or any low-income person with a disability, who doesnt have access to their own wheelchair to a dental or medical appointment can be a full-day process. They are also running innovative programs like the Spectrum Scholars. Society needs more programs like this that are not thought police focused on diversity and inclusion, but that lift people up to succeed.

Q: In an essay for the UD Research magazine several years ago, you said you rarely saw people like yourself at national conferences, when giving seminars at other universities or even in applicant pools for new faculty hires. Is that changing?

Booksh: Not really. One of the boards Im involved in did a survey of university leaders after a conference recently on how to increase diversity in your department. One hundred percent of the respondents said we need to do gender equity. But only two-thirds said they would be willing to do disability equity. Some of my colleagues believe its because some people think it takes more money and effort.

Q: What are some of the most meaningful and impactful actions a person can take to support people with disabilities?

Booksh: My answer is, the same thing I would ask you to do with anybody. Determine what the person needs to succeed and then put them in this role. I took a leadership development course from the American Chemical Society several years ago and learned that in every field of endeavor, you have about a dozen skills that can lead to your success. But you only need to be really good at 1 or 2 of them. The problem is, were developing one-size-fits-all curricula and lesson plans in our educational systems because its easy. But were not approaching things humanistically. We need to give people the freedom to excel. Its like Ive learned as a parent, your goal is not to make excellent children, but excellent adults. The same applies to universities. How do you prepare someone to excel after they leave our bubble? All of our benchmarks are meaningless if the people we pass back to society are not prepared to contribute. We cant put people with disabilities in boxes and forget about them.

Q: As an academic, what grade would you give the U.S. in securing full rights for people with disabilities? And what can all Americans do to improve that grade?

Booksh: Id give us a B. And if I was grading on a curve, its an A+. Are you surprised? Give me a country where youd rather be. If I had to parachute my child with a disability into a nation, there are more opportunities here. We were the first to pass anti-discrimination legislation for people with disabilities, and were still the best. Theres still a lot we could do. We can improve that grade if we just improve ourselves I guess you would call it following the Golden Rule, about treating others as you would like to be treated. People with disabilities are not special. Were in that bell curve of capabilities although only 33 percent of us are employed. Think what all that untapped talent could do for the U.S.
