THE HAGUE, the Netherlands Van Oord has contracted Blue Offshore to supply a full cable transport spread for both the Hollandse Kust (zuid) Alpha and Beta campaigns.

On Sunday July 19, the tug Kamarina and barge CC Atlantique carrying more than 8,000 metric tons of high voltage cable arrived in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The cables will form the connection of TenneTs Hollandse Kust (zuid) Alpha platform to the onshore grid.

For this transport Blue Offshore mobilized what is said to be the worlds first certified double basket carrousel barge, with each carrousel carrying about 4,000 metric tons of cable. The transport took place from Hellenic Cables in Greece to the port of Rotterdam.

Van Oord charted the 122-m (400-ft) long CC Atlantique. Besides two large carousels and the dedicated control systems, Blue Offshore provided all deck engineering, technical crew and complete mobilization service.

The cables will soon be loaded onto Van Oords cable lay vessel Nexus for installation offshore in the Dutch North Sea. A spare cable will be delivered to TenneT in Eemshaven.

The Hollandse Kust (zuid) Alpha grid connection is expected to be ready in 2021. Beta is scheduled for completion in 2022. The HKZ wind parks will supply 1,500 MW of renewable energy, sufficient to power 3 million households.

The Perseverance rover is on its way to Mars. What’s next? – CNN

"The mission has 314 million miles of interplanetary space and seven minutes of terror to get safely onto the surface of Mars," said Lori Glaze, director of NASA's planetary science division, in a statement. "When we see the landscape at Jezero Crater for the first time and we truly begin to realize the scientific bounty before us, the fun really begins."

Perseverance and the Ingenuity helicopter are safely tucked inside a protective aeroshell capsule. The descent stage that will help land the rover is also located in this aeroshell, which is attached to the cruise stage, or the mission's spacecraft.

The cruise stage is shaped like a disk and solar powered. It will travel more than 300 million miles to reach Mars.

While it's cruising to Mars, engineers on Earth will tell the spacecraft when to execute correction maneuvers to keep it on the right path to Mars, as well as its landing target. The ground team will also perform checks on the instruments and subsystems in the spacecraft.

About 45 days before landing on Mars, the spacecraft will enter the approach phase, with more correction maneuvers to its trajectory.

During what is hopefully a quiet journey to Mars, Perseverance's teams will be preparing and training for when the rover lands on Mars. The science team will prepare the instructions it wants to send to the rover as it uses its instruments on Mars.

The rover's drivers will also work with a model of the rover on Earth to prepare for Perseverance's journey across the Martian surface.

This includes using a twin of Perseverance on Earth to test hardware, drive it through the Mars Yard at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, and make sure the auto-navigation algorithms work, said Heather Justice, robotic operation downlink lead and one of the rover drivers at JPL.

'Seven minutes of terror'

The one-way light time it takes for radio signals to travel from Earth to Mars is about 10.5 minutes, which means the seven minutes it takes for the spacecraft to land on Mars will occur without any help or intervention from NASA teams on Earth.

NASA team members refer to this as the "seven minutes of terror." They tell the spacecraft when to begin EDL, (entry, descent and landing), and the spacecraft takes over from there.

The spacecraft hits the top of the Martian atmosphere moving at 12,000 miles per hour and has to slow down to zero miles per hour seven minutes later when the rover softly lands on the surface.

About 10 minutes before entering the thin Martian atmosphere, the cruise stage is shed and the spacecraft prepares for a guided entry, where small thrusters on the aeroshell help adjust its angle.

The spacecraft's heat shield will endure peak heating of 2,370 degrees Fahrenheit 75 seconds after entering the atmosphere.

Perseverance is targeting a 28-mile-wide ancient lake bed and river delta, the most challenging site yet for a NASA spacecraft landing on Mars. Rather than being flat and smooth, the small landing site is littered with sand dunes, steep cliffs, boulders and small craters.

The spacecraft has two upgrades -- called Range Trigger and Terrain-Relative Navigation -- to navigate this difficult and hazardous site.

Range Trigger will tell the 70.5-foot-wide parachute when to deploy based on the spacecraft's position 240 seconds after entering the atmosphere. After the parachute deploys, the heat shield will detach.

Terrain-Relative Navigation acts like a second brain for the rover, using cameras to take pictures of the ground as it rapidly approaches and determines the safest spot to land. It can shift the landing spot by up to 2,000 feet, according to NASA.

The back shell and parachute separate after the heat shield is discarded when the spacecraft is 1.3 miles above the Martian surface. The Mars landing engines, which include eight retrorockets, will fire to slow the descent from 190 miles per hour to about 1.7 miles per hour.

Then, the famed sky crane maneuver that landed the Curiosity rover will occur. Nylon cords will lower the rover 25 feet below the descent stage. After the rover touches down on the Martian surface, the cords will detach and the descent stage will fly away and land at a safe distance.

On the surface of Mars

Once the rover has landed, Perseverance's two-year mission will begin and it will go through a "checkout" period to make sure it's ready.

The rover will deploy its mast and antenna, image its landing sight, conduct a "health check" for its instruments, test movement and "flex" its arm and conduct a short test drive. Perseverance will also release its belly pan, which provided a safe haven for the Ingenuity helicopter stowed there during cruising and landing.

The rover will also find a nice, flat surface to drop the Ingenuity helicopter so it has a place to use as a helipad for its potential five test flights during a 30-day period. This will occur within the first 50 to 90 sols, or Martian days, of the mission.

Once Ingenuity is settled on the surface, Perseverance will drive to a safe spot at a distance and use its cameras to watch Ingenuity's flight.

After those flights, Perseverance will begin searching for evidence of ancient life, study Mars' climate and geology and collect samples that will eventually be returned to Earth via planned future missions.

mars 4k images show surface of the red planet in space as you’ve never seen it before – 7NEWS.com.au

For the first time, the landscape of Mars has been captured in stunning 4K resolution.

That is the highest quality that has ever been recorded. And the results are simply breathtaking.

Watch the incredible video above.

The pictures were captured by NASAs three most successful Mars rovers: Spirit, Opportunity and Curiosity.

The cameras onboard each of the rovers were the height of technology when they were launched.

The stunning video above was made by British YouTubers ElderFox Documentaries.

The group stitched thousands of pictures together, converting them into ultra-high-definition of the Red Planet.

The 10-minute video is described by the team as the most lifelike experience of being on M

And its hard to disagree.

If youre wondering why we dont see live video from Mars, theres a simple explanation.

Curiosity can - generally speaking - only send data it captures on Mars back to earth at a rate of 32 kbps, which is nowhere near fast enough for video. Its basically super slow dial-up speed.

But thanks to these amateur space fans, we dont need to worry, these images top them all.

New book documents the life of James Jesse Strang, self-professed Mormon monarch of Beaver Island – Michigan Radio

Stateside conversation with author Miles Harvey

The United States faced growing turmoil in the mid-19th century as technological change, abolitionist and religious movements and westward expansion altered American society. Out of the fracture and fervor emerged an unexpected king: a lawyer named James Jesse Strang. He claimed he was a prophet and the new head of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, moved his followers to Beaver Island and declared himself the monarch of a Mormon utopia in northern Lake Michigan.

Journalist and author Miles Harvey delves into Strangs story in his new book The King of Confidence: A Tale of Utopian Dreamers, Frontier Schemers, True Believers, False Prophets, and the Murder of an American Monarch.

After the death of Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon Church, in 1844, Strang was one of several figures who claimed they were his successors, Harvey said. Strang brought his followers to Beaver Island and established his monarchy there, though the island was already inhabited by Anishinaabe peoples and some European settlers. Strang used violence to force out those who opposed him, Harvey said.

Making a monarch

A couple hundred people attended Strangs coronation, which was enhanced with handmade costumes, a throne made of moss and stage props, Harvey said.

Its easy to take this stuff sort of like as a joke, but Ive got to say, the federal government didnt take it as a joke. President Millard Fillmore, about a year after Strang crowned himself king, was so worried about this quasi-independent kingdom on U.S. soil that he sent in the U.S. Navys first iron-hulled warship to invade the island and bring Strang to justice. Whats interesting is that although Strang was put on trial in Detroit in 1851, he and his people were found innocent on all charges, Harvey said.

Strang just had this incredible charisma, and he also had the ability to fool people, Harvey said. He said Strang basically ran a pirate colony out of Beaver Island.

Strangs contradictory kingdom

Harvey said Strang was a complicated character, known for violence, stealing from coastal towns and running a horse theft ring. But he held some progressive views on womens rights and was an abolitionist.

In the newspaper [Strang] ran off Beaver Island, I noticed an article one day by a guy named Fred Douglass, which was Frederick Douglass all about how sometimes, theft is okay when youre an oppressed person. And I just thought, this is just so Strang. Its both this kind of progressive abolitionist view--Im going to publish Douglasss piece--but for his people, it must have been so self-justifying: Yeah, were the oppressed. We get to steal that stuff, Harvey said.

Beyond Beaver Island

Harvey said the United States faced widespread economic, political and cultural turmoil during Strangs ascension to power, which took place a few years prior to the Civil War. It was an unstable environment that made persuasive leaders like Strang compelling, he explained.

Its a time when truth is just very malleable, and there arent a lot of firm things to hold onto, Harvey said. Strang came in and offered confidence, and people could trust him, although they couldnt trust him. So he absolutely thrived in that era, like a lot of people like him--swindlers, before and after. He was able to take advantage of this very unstable time and make people feel that he had simple answers to complex questions.

Reopened Art Institute Of Chicago Balances Needs Of Global Audience With Needs Of Local Community – Forbes

"Entrance to the Art Institute of Chicago Museum, Chicago, Illinois"

Edward Hoppers Nighthawks. Grant Woods American Gothic. Georges Seurats A Sunday on the Grande Jatte.

All of them among the most recognizable images in art history.

All of them in the permanent collection at the Art Institute of Chicago.

All of them from the hand of a white male artist depicting white people.

As art museums nationwide commit to becoming more welcoming to black audiences, the Art Institute of Chicago faces a question: how does it best balance continuing to highlight its treasure trove of art historys greatest hits from white artists Monet, van Gogh, Chagall, Picasso, Pollack, Warholwith work from black artists, depicting subjects more relevant to the 30% African-American community it serves locally?

CHICAGO, IL - SEPTEMBER 17: Visitors look over paintings including Georges Seurat's A Sunday on La ... [+] Grande Jatte (R) at the Art Institute of Chicago on September 17, 2014 in Chicago, Illinois. The museum, which draws around1.5 million visitors a year, has been named the best museum in the world by TripAdvisor. The museum has nearly 1 million square feet of exhibit space and 300,000 pieces of art in its permanent collection. (Photo by Scott Olson/Getty Images)

The awareness with which we consider what we're showing in our galleries and how we're interpreting artworks in the gallery has become more important, instead of being on the list of things to do it's, number one, Sarah Guernsey,Director and Senior Vice President, Curatorial Affairs at the Art Institute of Chicago told Forbes.com.

The museum reopened to the public following its coronavirus closure on July 30, several years into multi-faceted efforts to be more inclusive of black voices. Importantly to the Art Institute, that inclusion starts from within.

For us, it's not just an external approach to audiences, but it's also about our internal staff culture, Guernsey said. We want to make sure that our internal culture is supportive in the way we want to invite external guests.

One new initiative in that direction is the development of a department titled people and culture.

It is meant to work on having a better staff culture with equity, inclusion and anti-racism at the core, emphasizing the need for our staff culture and engagement to impact how we're presenting art in the galleries, Guernsey explained.

The museum, additionally, has an equity forum, employees who volunteer to take positions pushing the institutions anti-racism work forward. Within the equity forum is a group called narratives and content.

This is a group of people that as we hit on some of the issues of social identity in the exhibitions or in acquisitions, if we have questions we want to consider more broadly, they're willing to work through challenging topics without it just being one curator who thinks he or she knows what to do, Guernsey said.

The efforts continue with staff color affinity groups, providing employees of color a space to gather and talk, and we're working to create another place for dialogue where we're putting together meetings with the director and black staff to talk about their concerns because we realize that everyone is reacting to the brutal murders of George Floyd and others, but that it impacts our black staff more than anyone else, Guernsey noted, adding that, we are working really hard to center black voices inside the museum, to make it a welcoming place for staff where they feel supported really thinking about black staff and not speaking for black staff.

One of the museums longest running efforts toward inclusion is its leadership advisory committee dating back to the 1990s. This group of black supporters consult with curators and the learning and public engagement department on acquisitions, exhibitions and programming in an effort to decentralized decision making.

Subtle, but significant, tweaks to guest services have also been undertaken to place black artists on a more equal footing with their celebrity white counterparts. One such example takes shape in the visitor guides highlighting what to see in an hour.

Hundreds of thousands of tourists annually stream into the museum. Many of them are looking primarily to breeze through for an in-person glimpse of the images theyve read about in books and seen on posters before moving on to the citys next attraction.

Years ago, youd look at the what to see in an hour (guide) and it was all 19th century masterpieces by Suerat, Monet, and we have very intentionally moved away from just listing those same 10 objects every time in the what to see in an hour suggested tour, Guernsey said. As much as it's our job to share with the world the famous artworks, we want also to educate people on artwork they may not have noticed or considered.

One such example is Archibald Motleys electric, jubilant, purple juke joint utopia Nightlife, a previously less-celebrated painting from a black artist now elevated to the stature of Monets haystacks or van Goghs bedroom.

There are ways that artwork becomes famous and part of it is putting it in the public eye and letting people learn about it, Guernsey said. We definitely take that seriously, we can't just share the most famous objects that everybody expects, we want to share more to broaden the cannon and broaden our visitors understanding of art history.

The Obama presidential portraits will be visiting the Art Institute of Chicago in 2021.

To that end, the Art Institute will be presenting a rich exhibition schedule of black artists through the remainder of 2020 and 2021. Richard Hunt, Joseph Yoakum, Bisa Butler and the Obama presidential portraitshis by Kehinde Wiley and hers by Amy Sheraldall take center stage. Hunt is a Chicago native, Yoakum was educated at the Art Institute, as was Hunt, and the Obamas, of course, arrived in Washington, D.C. from Illinois.

We are a major national art museum, but we are Chicago-centric, Guernsey said. It's our civic role, but it's also just a proud part of who we are to look to Chicago voices.

Malangatana Ngwenya. The Fountain of Blood (A fonte de sangue), 1961. The Cleveland Museum of Art, ... [+] Gift of Dr. and Mrs. Lloyd H. Ellis Jr.

While not a Chicagoan, a mostly-unknown black artist taking center stage as the museum opens with an exhibition alongside El Greco and Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, two traditional art history stalwarts, is Malangatana Ngwenya (19362011).

Malangatana: Mozambique Modern brings together over 40 key paintings and drawings, serving as both the first survey of the artists early work since his death and the first solo exhibition of a modern African painter at the Art Institute.

The museum vividly describes his work as, an aesthetic defined by a dense assembly of figures; phantasmagoric depictions of animals, humans, and supernatural creatures; and a palette of both bright and dark colors.

Our exhibition is looking at the early part of his career alongside the backdrop of the social, cultural and political conditions in Mozambique that in some ways he was commentating on, Felicia Valentine Mings, Academic Curator, Department of Academic Engagement and Research, told Forbes.com. Its a tumultuous moment as it was the height of the anti-colonial struggle.

The exhibition covers the period 1959-1975, 1975 being the year Mozambique was finally granted independence from Portugal, one of the last African nations to realize its freedom from colonial rule.

Malangatanas unforgettably gruesome figures fall nicely into an art historical through line connecting him to Hieronymus Bosch, Goya and Dali.

He would have most likely absorbed some of that material while also really looking to his Ronga cultural background and bringing in the monstrous forms, the dense composition, the fantastic themes pulling from culture and folk lore and bringing that together, Mings said. Its really exciting to think about how we can see his work in dialogue with modern African artists who were practicing on the continent at that time as well as European artists who we see resonance with.

Malangatana Ngwenya. Do You Remember Those Who Entered Bleeding (Lembras-te daqueles que entravam a ... [+] sangrar), 1974/75.

Malangatana: Mozambique Modern is on view through November 16.

Richard Hunts exhibition is tentatively set for an opening date of September 18, 2020, followed by Bisa Butler on November 14th. In 2021, both the Joseph Yoakum and Obama portrait exhibits are scheduled to debut in June.

Hot iGaming Investment Opportunities – NuWireInvestor – NuWire Investor

In the past few years weve witnessed a massive growth in the iGaming industry. While other internet-based industries have faced major challenges, this industry, spurred on by technological advancements and internet operations mergers and acquisitions, has exploded.

Now, this growth has not come without any pains. As more countries have begun to legalize the industry, it has brought increased regulations, which is both good and bad for the industry. Its good, in that guidelines are being set for companies to follow. However, at the same time some of these regulations can be challenging, and costly, for companies to implement. There is no denying, though, that the igaming space is here to stay, and its growth will only continue from here. There may be no better time for investors on the hunt to jump in with both feet to this sector.

What is iGaming?

If you havent come across the term before, iGaming is a catch-all designation for all forms of online gambling. It stretches from online sports betting, esports, poker and bingo, to the more traditional slots and table games.

The businesses that are involved in the igaming industry include the casinos, of course, but also all the other businesses that service the casino operations. That includes affiliate companies who send players to the casinos, the companies who license the games to the online casinos and many other similar service providers.

iGaming locales

The most popular iGaming hubs in the world are Gibraltar, the United Kingdom and Malta. There are several other places as well that are becoming hubs in their own right, but these 3 locations stand out from the pack.

iGaming investment opportunities

The iGaming industry offers numerous opportunities for investors, depending on their risk profile and preferred investment vehicles. Here are some ideas for investors to explore:

Venture capital

With the growth of the igaming space, funds are beginning to show increased interest.

Vice Ventures, a New York City-based seed-stage venture capital firm in the USA, was recently launched to invest in good companies operating in what they call bad industries.

Angel investors with tech-specific skills and (typically) high-net-worth can decide to invest in iGaming startups and support them with capital and knowledge, helping them to grow, develop, and thrive in this massive sector.

The present and future of iGaming

Despite the big growth seen by the iGaming industry, current events have thrown a few recent roadblocks. The biggest online gambling companies have experienced mixed fortunes depending on which parts of their portfolio of products have been exposed to the pandemic.

Those companies who are heavily weighted on the online casino side of things, have exploded with record numbers. With more people stuck at home, and starving for entertainment, the online casino industry was positioned for huge gains.

One the other side, these companies who were weighted on sports better, have taken a huge hit to their business. Without any sporting events taking place, it was of course difficult for companies to handle the level of wagers they had become accustomed to. The good news is that most sports are now back, or on their way back, so it should hopefully be just a temporary setback for the industry.

According to recent predictions, the online gambling market may approach $1 trillion in less than a decade. The market valuations expect the global iGaming market to grow from $45.8 billion in 2017 to $94.4 billion by 2024.

No matter which way you slice it, this industry is poised for some incredible investment opportunities.

Las Vegas food banks brace for increase in need, $600 supplement to unemployment could expire – KTNV Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) Thousands of valley families could be left in jeopardy if Congress does not extend the extra $600 unemployment benefit and some nonprofits are bracing for a large increase in demand if that happens.

Three Square food bank is already seeing people prepare for the worst. When the pandemic first started, it saw 60% more people needing food every day. In the last couple weeks, it says it has actually seen an increase in people needing food.

RELATED: Las Vegas residents speak out about missing $600 unemployment benefit

The COO of Three Square, Larry Scott, says he believes people on unemployment are preparing to lose that extra money.

"We're already starting to feel the impacts of that," Scott said. "I think people are trying to find food sources today, knowing that it's about to come upon them."

Scott says they've had enough food up until this point, but if that need increases, it could be a challenge.

And that's on top of other challenges, including closing their building to their volunteers to help prevent spreading COVID-19.

"So what we did was have our volunteers meet out at our drive-thru sites in the open air where we can social distance them," Scott said. "We still have some volunteers, but they're at our drive-thru."

MORE CORONAVIRUS NEWS

Individual donations don't normally make up a large portion of their food, but Scott says they need the public's help now more than ever.

Option to donate is available here.

Golden Knights strike early in exhibition win over Coyotes – Las Vegas Review-Journal

Not since the Golden Knights inaugural season has there been an exhibition game more anticipated than Thursdays.

After more than four months away, the Knights picked up where they left off.

Reilly Smith scored twice in the first period as the Knights grabbed a 4-1 victory over Arizona at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta.

There was a flurry in the third where they grabbed some momentum, some power plays where we got on our heels a bit, coach Pete DeBoer said. But for sure through the first 40, 45 minutes of the game, I really liked how we put pressure on them offensively and didnt give up much defensively.

The Knights, who won 11 of their final 13 games before the season was paused March 12 because of the coronavirus pandemic, saw plenty to build on before they open round-robin play against Dallas on Monday.

Smith helped the Knights win the special teams battle, as he scored short-handed and converted on a power play later in the first period. The Knights finished 1-for-6 (11 shots) on the power play.

Nick Cousins added an empty-net goal and two assists, and Alex Tuch finished with a goal and an assist as part of a seven-point effort from the third line.

When we have all our lines going, and I think we did tonight, its really tough on teams, Smith said. I think (the fourth) line did a great job being able to change momentum. In every game, other teams are going to get different momentum swings, and they did a good job shutting them down and we were able to build off that and create offense.

Goalie Marc-Andre Fleury got the start and turned in a solid effort as he battles with Robin Lehner for the No. 1 job.

Fleury, who missed the first three practices during training camp, finished with 22 saves after a quiet first period when the Coyotes were held without a shot for more than 17 minutes.

Taylor Hall had Arizonas goal at 9:14 of the third period when he poked home a loose puck after a scramble in front.

Maybe at the start they brought it to us a bit, but we didnt take too long, Fleury said. Our guys found their legs and played very solid. They have a lot of speed on that team, but I thought we matched it, no problem. Like I said before, we controlled the puck a lot and created a lot offensively. It was fun to watch guys go.

The Knights played without left wing Max Pacioretty, who remains in Las Vegas to rehabilitate what DeBoer termed a minor injury.

Pacioretty, the teams leading scorer during the regular season with 32 goals and 66 points, was replaced by Chandler Stephenson on the first line against Arizona.

Smith notched a career-high 27 goals during the regular season and provided the offense for the Knights in the first period.

The winger forced a turnover and finished off a two-on-one with penalty kill partner William Karlsson at 8:42 and converted on a power play after Jonathan Marchessault drew a tripping penalty on Coyotes defenseman Jakob Chychrun.

Smith dragged the puck around Arizonas Alex Goligoski and snapped a shot from the left hashmark past goalie Darcy Kuempers glove at 16:23.

I think we were probably a little sloppy at the start, Smith said. It seemed like there was a lot of bodies running into each other at the start of the game. I thought we did a good job cleaning it up after that.

Physical winger Ryan Reaves created a talking point with about six minutes remaining in the second period when he decked Arizonas Nick Schmaltz with a check to the head.

Schmaltz was forced to leave the game, and the hit will put Reaves back in the spotlight entering the postseason.

Knights defenseman Nate Schmidt left with about eight minutes to play, but DeBoer said Schmidt cramped up and was removed as a precaution.

Ive said this before, Youre never as good as you think you are, and youre never as bad as you think you are after a game, DeBoer said. Im sure theres some areas we can clean up but, you know, overall, considering the circumstances, I thought we came in and did a real good job of carrying over a real good camp into the first exhibition game. We want to build on that.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Therapy …

If your major depression has proven resistant to other treatment, TMS may be an option. Heres how its used in the treatment of depression and other mood disorders. What is transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)?

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive treatment that directs recurring magnetic energy pulses at the specific regions of the brain that are involved in mood control. These magnetic pulses pass painlessly through the skull and stimulate brain cells which can improve communication between different parts of the brain. When these TMS pulses are delivered at regular intervals it is known as repetitive TMS (or rTMS). Exactly how TMS works is unclear, but the stimulation seems to have a lasting effect on how the brain functions, which can ease depression symptoms and boost your mood.

Magnetic pulses going into your brain might sound scary or even conjure up images of shock therapy portrayed in movies such as One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. However, the pulses used in TMS therapy are actually the same type and strength as the magnetic pulses used in MRI machines and are considered very safe. And unlike electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), TMS doesnt require any kind of sedation or post-therapy downtime, and comes without any memory or cognition side effects. In fact, for most people TMS has fewer side effects than antidepressant medications.

Thus far in the United States, transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy has only been approved for the treatment of major depressive disorder. While depression is a treatable condition, TMS is typically used when standard treatments such as therapy, medication, and self-help techniques have proved ineffectiveor, in the case of medication, the side effects are too severe. In many European countries, however, TMS is approved for a multitude of other common conditions including:

TMS has even shown promise in off-label treatment of conditions such as tinnitus, fibromyalgia, Tourette syndrome, autism spectrum disorder, and multiple sclerosis.

Depression can take a heavy toll, changing how you think, feel, and function in your daily life. While many people are able to gain relief through self-help, therapy, medication, or a combination of these treatments, for others the sense of hopelessness never lets up. If youre suffering from major depression thats proven resistant to other treatment, then transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy may be an option. Just as antidepressant medication aims to stimulate your brain chemically, TMS does the same using magnetic fields.

A variety of TMS systems are available, including:

Surface transcranial magnetic stimulation (surface TMS) devices use a figure-of-8 magnetic coil which can penetrate 0.6 inches under the skull to reach specific brain regions.

Deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (dTMS) devices use a larger H-coil which allows the magnetic energy to penetrate deeper into the brain, up to 1.6 inches below the skull.

Rapid TBS (theta burst) therapy devices are considered just as safe and effective for the treatment of major depressive disorder as standard TMS, but these devices require sessions of just 3-6 minutes rather than the 20-40 minutes required by most TMS devices.

There are also simple brain stimulation devices that have been cleared by the FDA in the U.S. for use at home. However, these are not strictly TMS devices. Rather, theyre classed as Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation (CES) units which useelectric currents instead of magnetic pulses to stimulate the brain. The true effectiveness of these devices seems to be up for debate. As with any medical treatment for depression, its important to discuss the best options with your doctor.

Most published trials have yielded results supporting the use of TMS to improve cases of treatment-resistant depression. For people with major depression that hasnt benefited from medication, just over half experience improvements in their symptoms with TMS, while about one in three gain total remission from their symptoms.

That doesnt mean that TMS is a cure for depression and that your depression symptoms wont return, though. In fact, the positive results from transcranial magnetic stimulation tend to last for an average of about a year after treatment. However, its important to remember that depression is not just the result of a chemical imbalance but is caused by a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors. In other words, your lifestyle choices, relationships, and coping skills likely contribute to your depression just as much as your genetics. Therefore, you can use the improvements in your energy and drive following TMS therapy to begin talk therapy or make the lifestyle changessuch as improving your diet, exercising, and building your support networkthat can help preserve your depression recovery in the long term. See Coping with Depression.

TMS is a relatively short, noninvasive, outpatient treatment. That means that it doesnt involve surgery, theres no anesthesia or sedation required, and no down time needed afterwards. You stay awake and alert throughout the treatment. TMS therapy is also non-systemic, which means that it has no effect on other areas of your body as antidepressants can.

A typical TMS treatment course includes daily sessions (5 times per week) for 4 to 6 weeksthough some people find it helpful to occasionally return for maintenance treatments following the initial treatment course. A TMS session generally lasts 20 to 40 minutes, although some new devices require sessions as short as 3 minutes.

During your TMS treatment, the clinician will seat you in a comfortable chair, provide you with earplugs, and then place a magnetic coil on your head, near the area of the brain thought to be involved in mood regulation. In the case of depression, this area is the prefrontal cortex beneath your forehead.

Short electromagnetic pulses are then administered through the coil. The magnetic pulses easily pass through your skull, and cause small electrical currents that stimulate nerve cells.

After TMS treatment is complete, youre able to go straight back into your day, drive back to work or home, and continue on as normal.

Unlike the oldest brain stimulation therapy, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), TMS has no effect on memory or mental clarity. It also avoids the negative side effects of sedation required for ECT. While TMS isnt totally free of side effects, the most commonly occurring are mild, usually headaches and scalp discomfort. While about half of TMS patients report headaches, they typically respond well to over-the-counter pain medication and tend to diminish over the course of treatment.

About a third of patients report painful scalp sensations or facial twitching during the magnetic pulses, which also tend to diminish over the course of the treatment. Repositioning the coil and adjusting the stimulation settings can also help to reduce these mild side effects.

The most serious risk of TMS is the possibility of producing a seizurebut the risk is very small at around .001%. While there have been only a few documented cases of seizures occurring due to TMS treatment, if you have a high risk of seizureif you have epilepsy or a history of head injury, for examplethen youre unlikely to be a candidate for TMS.

TMS has been approved in the U.S. for just over 10 years and so far, there are no reported lasting negative effects associated with the treatment.

However, it is important to remember that this treatment is relatively young at 10+ years old, so there simply has not been enough time to study the long-term effects. With time and more research, understanding on the long-term effects will improve.

In addition to those with epilepsy or a family history of seizures, TMS is not suitable for several other types of patient. Since TMS uses magnetic energy, people who have metal in their head or neck are not able to receive TMS, with the exception of braces or dental fillings.

Examples of metal objects that would prevent TMS treatment include:

Other factors that may preclude you from receiving TMS therapy include:

Sebi allows acceptance of client securities as collateral by way of title transfer till August 31 – The Financial Express

Markets regulator Sebi on Wednesday allowed co-existence of the current title transfer collateral mechanism and the new pledge and re-pledge process till August 31.

The decision has been taken in view of the prevailing situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic and partial lockdowns in various areas of the country.

Besides, the regulator received representations from stock brokers regarding changes to the systems and software development.

In a circular, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) said the mechanism of pledge and re-pledge will be implemented with effect from August 1.

Trading members (TMs) or clearing members (CMs) need to align their systems and accept client collateral and margin-funded stocks by way of creation of pledge and re-pledge in the depository system.

It further said TM or CM will also be allowed to accept client securities as collateral by way of title transfer into the client collateral account as per the present system.

The system of parallel acceptance of the client securities by way of title transfer shall be available only up to August 31, 2020, and no further extension shall be granted, Sebi said.

Funded stocks held by the TM or CM under the margin trading facility will preferably be held by them by way of pledge with effect from August 1.

It further said trading or clearing member may continue to hold funded stocks in respect of margin funding in client margin trading securities account till the end of August.

The regulator reiterated that trading or clearing member will have to close all existing demat accounts tagged as client margin or collateral by August 31.

Earlier in the day, the Association of National Exchanges Members of India (ANMI) has written to Sebi and the finance ministry seeking them to consider granting extension of implementation of Sebi circular for the next two months and allow the existing system of crediting the funded stock to earmarked funded stock DP account.

In February, Sebi had issued stringent norms to prevent misuse of clients securities that are available with trading and clearing members, and depository participants.

It had banned transfer of clients securities to demat accounts of trading and clearing members.

Under the framework, TM or CM will accept collateral from clients in the form of securities, only by way of margin pledge, created in the depository system, with effect from June 1. This was extended to August 1.

Sebi said depositories should provide margin pledge for pledging clients securities as margin to the TM or CM. The latter should open a separate demat account for accepting such margin pledge, which should be tagged as client securities margin pledge account.

For the purpose of providing collateral in the form of securities as margin, a client shall pledge securities with TM, and TM shall re-pledge the same with CM, and CM in turn shall re-pledge the same to clearing corporation (CC).

The complete trail of such re-pledge shall be reflected in the demat account of the pledgor, Sebi had said.

Government Grants Loan to Libertarian-Based Ayn Rand Institute – The Great Courses Daily News

By Jonny Lupsha, News Writer

According to Reuters, a federally funded loan program designed to aid small businesses saw at least one surprising recipient. The institute promoting the laissez-faire capitalism of writer Ayn Rand [] was approved for a Paycheck Protection Plan (PPP) loan of up to $1 million, the article said.

The Ayn Rand Institute: The Center for the Advancement of Objectivism in Santa Ana, California, sought to preserve 35 jobs with the PPP funding. The institute referred Reuters to a May 15 article, in which board member Harry Binswanger and senior fellow Onkar Ghate wrote that the organization would take any relief money offered by the CARES Act.

Ayn Rands philosophy in fiction and nonfiction was to promote individualism and unfettered capitalism, denouncing government involvement in virtually every aspect of life.

Ayn Rands beliefs aligned with libertarianism.

Libertarians come in two major clanseconomists and philosophers, said Dr. Lawrence Cahoone, Professor of Philosophy at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. Economist libertarians typically argue for maximum individual liberty and minimal government interference through a utilitarian economic argumentin other words, that free markets bring the greatest utility or benefit to society.

Philosophical libertarians have prominently been ethical, natural rights theorists, claiming that capitalism is morally required independent of its consequences.

Similarly, Ayn Rands philosophywhich is called objectivismis rooted in humanitys need to survive, which she said is rooted in self-dependence. Dr. Cahoone said that there is an objective standard of value, an objective ethics, in her beliefs, and that rights are how those ethics are applied in society.

Note that rights are primarily not to own things, he said. They are a right to ones own self and own life, which yields rights to pursue interests and purposes. But on that basis, property rightswhich are the rights to use, enjoy, or dispose of somethingare essential.

With Rands emphasis on self-reliance, its no surprise that she was no fan of charity.

Rand hates altruism, Dr. Cahoone said. That is, she hates the tendency to first take as the ultimate moral standard the effects or benefits of my acts on other people. And second, she hates the belief that the highest moral act is self-sacrifice.

Rand believed that if people are precious, their egoistic purposes and freedoms were precious, and therefore selfishness is a virtue. This belief is called rational selfishness, which Dr. Cahoone said is a belief in which selfishness is a moral duty.

So capitalism, for her, is the only moral and rational socioeconomic system in human history. She endorses laissez-faire; no government activity whose aim is more than to protect individuals and their property is just. She wanted a voluntary system of taxation, among mere provision of military and police.

The Ayn Rand Institute said it was accepting the million-dollar PPP loan unapologetically, because the principle here is justice.

Rest of the Story, Pandemic Edition : Planet Money – NPR

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON, BYLINE: This is PLANET MONEY from NPR.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

ROBERT SMITH, HOST:

I remember the last normal day I had - March 12, 2020. And I remember it so vividly because I spent most of it in a studio recording this lighthearted episode with Sarah Gonzalez about the strange new coronavirus and how everyone was dealing with it. We never played the episode, but here's just a taste from four months ago.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

SARAH GONZALEZ, HOST:

Like, not touching your face - turns out it's impossible to do.

SMITH: Or finding sanitizer or just going to work with your colleagues or public transportation.

GONZALEZ: Or even cleaning your hands properly. Most of us have been doing it wrong.

SMITH: You have never heard this episode because, by the time we finished recording it - by the end of the day even - it seemed like everything had changed. Cities shut down. The stock market plunged. Tom Hanks announced that he had the virus. The episode felt out of date by the time we left the studio, and we just put it on a shelf and forgot about it. But I think about that episode a lot because, at the very end, Sarah and I were talking about hand sanitizer, and I did something that I haven't done since.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

SMITH: Maybe for the last time in my life, I feel confident to do a high-five (laughter).

GONZALEZ: Oh. No...

SMITH: All right, the last high-five.

GONZALEZ: I don't know. I don't know. All right, let's do it.

SMITH: We're finally sterilized.

GONZALEZ: (Laughter).

(SOUNDBITE OF SMACK)

SMITH: The last high-five. It was also the last day I rode the subway, the last day in the office, the last day recording in a studio with another human being. In the four months since that, so much has happened - so many deaths, the worst economic collapse of our lifetimes. And we're still in the middle of it. But we wanted to stop for a moment, as a show, and take a look at what we've been through and how much of our lives have changed in such a short period of time.

(SOUNDBITE OF LE FAT CLUB'S "IBIZA POOL PARTY")

SMITH: Hello, and welcome to PLANET MONEY. I'm Robert Smith. Usually, we wait until the end of the year to do a special episode we call The Rest of the Story, where we check in on the people we met that year and find out how they're doing. We're going to do that show a little early this year because so much has happened so fast. Today on the show, we're going to go back over the episodes that we did about COVID and report the rest of the story. We'll track where the money went, who got it and who didn't, and we'll check in on some of the people we profiled over the last few months - the unemployed, the business owners, the nurses and the man who manufactured a tiny piston to save lives.

(SOUNDBITE OF LE FAT CLUB'S "IBIZA POOL PARTY")

SMITH: Some of the economic changes in the last four months have been staggering - tens of millions of people unemployed, bankruptcies skyrocketing. But just as extraordinary has been the response to this challenge.

Congress moved faster than anyone thought possible to provide $3 trillion in relief, money that went to states and hospitals and businesses but also to individuals - checks for $1,200, a $600 a week boost for unemployment checks across the country. So much money, in fact, that when you look at the charts, the total personal income in the United States went up. Income was higher than it was before the crisis, even with so many people not working. Those benefits are expiring in a week, and Congress is debating what to do next. A lot is on the line. So we wanted to take this moment to follow up with the people we profiled over the last four months and to see how they're doing.

First up, small businesses. Part of that $3 trillion package went straight to businesses with fewer than 500 employees. It was called the Paycheck Protection Program.

NICK FOUNTAIN, BYLINE: PPP.

SMITH: The PPE. That is Nick Fountain who's with me now.

FOUNTAIN: It's true.

SMITH: Nick and I interviewed a bunch of business owners who were applying for these loans from the federal government. They would eventually be turned into grants if they kept their employees. And we traveled out to Queens to meet one person in particular.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED NPR BROADCAST)

AUDRA FORDIN: My name is Audra Fordin. I am the fourth generation and first female to take ownership of my family's auto repair shop here in Flushing, Queens, N.Y. It's called Great Bear.

FOUNTAIN: Yeah. And, Robert, just to remind people about Audra, we talked to her during the middle of New York's shutdown. And her business was pretty much devastated. She does car repair, but nobody was driving. So the amount of money her business was bringing in had gone down 75%. And she'd been talking with her employees about how she might have to lay them off or furlough them. She didn't really know what. But as a last-ditch effort, she applied for this PPP loan. And she asked for $25,000. And last we heard from her, she had been approved for the loan, but she hadn't gotten it yet.

SMITH: And there was a little bit of drama at the end of the episode because the rollout of this PPP plan by the federal government, it was an absolute mess. The computers were crashing. Nobody knew the rules. It was first-come, first-served, so there was a limited amount of money, and everyone was desperately, like, refreshing the site, refreshing the site, trying to get through to get these loans.

FOUNTAIN: And after we published the episode, things got a little smoother the computer system was worked out. Congress put more money into the program. But this other problem arose, which was that it turned out that people who had, you know, banking relationships, people who knew their banker and had them on speed dial, were the most likely to get those early loans. And some people without those relationships kind of just gave up. And so now when we look at the data - we actually have a lot of the data now - we can see that richer neighborhoods got more of these loans per capita than poor neighborhoods and Black and brown neighborhoods.

SMITH: Absolutely. And if you've followed Twitter any amount over the last few months, you know there's also been this backlash against businesses who took the loans.

FOUNTAIN: People have strong feelings on the Internet about who got PPP money. That is an understatement.

SMITH: Well, there was this whole, like, you shouldn't have taken the money; I deserved the money. And then other people would be like, no, you shouldn't take the money. And the thing that really typified this was the Ayn Rand Institute, named after, of course, the famous author and philosopher Ayn Rand, who talked about the power of the individual and who railed against government handouts. Well, the organization named after her asked for a government handout.

FOUNTAIN: And, Robert, you and I have been sort of sending these articles back-and-forth - like, ah, ha-ha, Ayn Rand Institute got it. But all these articles really missed the point of the program, which was to get as much money into business owners' hands as quickly as possible so that they could keep people on the payroll. And at least for Audra, when I talked to her this week, that seems to have happened.

SMITH: Yes. You called Audra back. Tell me everything.

FOUNTAIN: Well, we FaceTimed. And quick side note - she was wearing one of those masks - have you seen these? People send in a photo of them smiling, and it's printed...

SMITH: No.

FOUNTAIN: ...On the mask.

SMITH: No.

FOUNTAIN: And so it's just very weird.

Hey, Audra.

FORDIN: Hi there, Nick.

FOUNTAIN: You at the shop?

FORDIN: Yes.

FOUNTAIN: How you been?

FORDIN: We're doing OK. You know, as far as - I guess you're asking with the PPE...

FOUNTAIN: Not the PPE, but the PPP.

FORDIN: PPP.

FOUNTAIN: I see that you're set with the PPE. You've got the mask. You've got the gloves. How about the PPP?

FORDIN: The PPP came through great. I got the money. It was timely.

SMITH: She got the money.

FOUNTAIN: Yeah. She asked for $25,000. She got all of it. And she says that it's been a huge help because business isn't actually at full strength yet, and despite that, she's been able to keep her whole team together.

FORDIN: There's a community that happened, and I can't make that up - the relationships.

FOUNTAIN: Yeah. It seems like you have such an awesome team, and it would've been such - so heartbreaking to lose any of those guys. And you didn't have to.

FORDIN: Well, not that I didn't have to. I chose not to.

SMITH: This is one example of a team that was able to stay together, which is good, which is exactly what this program was meant for.

FOUNTAIN: Yes, totally.

Are people working in the - on the floor right now? You want to...

FORDIN: You want to say hi to Cedric?

FOUNTAIN: Sure.

Robert, you remember Cedric Kang (ph), her lead mechanic, the guy who showed us all those drills?

SMITH: Yeah. (Imitating drill) - yeah. We recorded drills for 10 minutes, yeah.

FOUNTAIN: So many drills.

FORDIN: I'm sure he'll be happy to hear from you, too.

FOUNTAIN: Anyways, I got to talk to him for a second.

CEDRIC KANG: Hi, Nick. How are you?

FOUNTAIN: Hey, Cedric. What's going on?

KANG: All right. Not much. I have very good news for - you know, with my wife. We got a quarantine baby.

FOUNTAIN: You're having a baby?

KANG: Yeah, yeah.

FORDIN: Yeah.

FOUNTAIN: That's awesome.

SMITH: Such a happy ending. Thanks, Nick.

FOUNTAIN: You bet.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAWRENCE WONG'S "EYES ON YOU")

SMITH: The last four months were obviously hard for businesses that shut down. But in some ways, it was worse for the employees of the businesses that had to stay open. Those workers were essential. They weren't going to get fired, so no unemployment checks. And they had to show up for work in the middle of a pandemic. Sarah Gonzalez profiled some of those workers. Hey, Sarah.

GONZALEZ: Hey, Robert.

SMITH: Sarah, you visited a grocery store because you had to 'cause you were doing a story about grocery workers.

GONZALEZ: Yeah, essential workers.

SMITH: Tell us what the story was.

GONZALEZ: So about three months ago, I spent a morning at a grocery store in North Carolina with essential workers. And just to, like, remind listeners, this was a grocery store where everyone was a person of color, and mostly the people working there were women. I don't know if you guys remember this.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED NPR BROADCAST)

FATIMA PAVON: Oh, no white people work here. No. We do have, you know, a little bit of everything except white people, yeah.

GONZALEZ: That was Fatima Pavon (ph). She works at Compare Foods supermarket. And when we spoke in April, she was trying to bring herself to ask for a raise because her job had gotten a lot riskier than she signed up for with the virus.

SMITH: And that was one of those interesting things about this story, is normally when a job is riskier, you get paid more for it. But in this case, no one had gotten a raise yet.

GONZALEZ: Yeah, no hazard pay. And Fatima made $9.20 an hour, which came out to about $300 a week.

SMITH: Which, we should say, is a lot less than she would've made if she had been fired and put on unemployment. Sarah, you called her back. What did she say?

GONZALEZ: Yeah, we checked in this week.

Hey, Fatima.

PAVON: Hey. How are you?

GONZALEZ: Hey. I'm good. How are you?

PAVON: Good.

GONZALEZ: So I was just curious what's going on with you.

PAVON: Nothing. I'm still at the - at my job. Only thing new is - so I got a raise.

GONZALEZ: You got a raise?

PAVON: Yeah. Yeah.

Law of Integrity the Joke’s on Us – India Legal

And what, incidentally, do you think integrity is? The ability not to pick a watch out of your neighbors pocket? Asks Ayn Rand in the classic Fountainhead and goes on to answer, No, its not as easy as that. If that were all, Id say ninety-five percent of humanity were honest, upright men. Only, as you can see, they arent. Integrity is the ability to stand by an idea. That presupposes the ability to think. Thinking is something one doesnt borrow or pawn.

The on-going catharsis in the Court No 1 of the Supreme Court has all the components for a competing episode in the theatre of Indian Judiciary. The histrionic screenplay unfolds in the backdrop of the gruesome and gory murder of 8 men in khaki, in a typical Maoist style operation just that it was not played out in the forests of Dandakaranya by a history sheeter roaming free with more than 60 criminal cases pending various stages of trial in different courts. The celebration in social media that followed the killing of Vikas Dubey and his men in police encounter was a sharp slap on the knuckles of our judiciary. What was being mocked at, if not questioned, was the integrity of the Indian judiciary.

The ensuing PIL drama in the Supreme Court is nothing but a cruel attack on the 8 policemen who were butchered on duty, by elements who do not believe in the concept of rule of law. This enactment is beginning to remind one of the Nirbhaya case the one who should not be named wherein the self-appointed conscience keepers of the legal cottage industry in Delhi took it upon themselves to dictate to the judiciary as to how their perverted idea of deliverance should substitute the idea of dispensation of justice.

I have dealt cases with Justice B S Chauhan. I too would have suggested his name, observed the CJI when the Solicitor General, representing the UP Government, submitted a draft notification for appointment of a three member inquiry commission. Instant verdict was delivered by this coterie and the farce did not even break for an adequate recess. Bang came the next petition, orchestrated with significant precision, attacking the retired bureaucrat in the Commission, that it appeared as if the CJI pleaded for the endorsement of this legal cabal while stating we will not allow you to cast aspersions on someones integrity on this. How can you call a man corrupt by a statement that simply says rule of law has to be followed?. In a court wherein public interest has got substituted by competing vested interests of criss-crossing factions those that want to selectively shed a cinematic tear only for blood-thirsty murderers as defined in the left-leaning human rights encyclopaedia an endless stream of frivolous petitions is becoming the new norm. What we are witnessing in Court no 1 is the precise death of obiter dicta one cut every day under the mindful watch of our robed luminaries.

Who is the director behind this clan which probably subscribes to no ideology other than the rule of expediency and wants to remote control the Supreme Court of India? Why should the Apex Court watch this political circus that aims to convert the highest seat of justice into a Lutyens panchayat exhibiting a tendency of judicial masochism? Who is behind these petitioners, lawyers, journalists, media platforms that earnestly want to dish out integrity certificates to serving and retired judges and bureaucrats? Should wine tasting sessions or kitty parties in swanky south Delhi living rooms decide what defines constitutional morality for the collective conscience of this country?

The joke, many would argue, is not on the judiciary but on us, the common people, who still believe in the institutional integrity of the courts. This joke gets amplified when you will learn that even after the Supreme Court dismissed the plethora of petitions asking the Commission to begin the enquiry, a fresh set of public interest litigations on the same issue have been filed, this time on the basis of a news report that appeared in a digital platform whos only point of existence is to expend certificates of virtue to every institution this country holds dear. One question that begs reply in this ongoing saga, even before the Commission has commenced an enquiry when will the tirade of these petitions stop?

The lofty acumen of the three member committee becomes evident when one has a sneak-peak into the 150 collective years in public service they have registered in service to this nation. Should the verdict of a failed journalist ruling on their integrity in a struggling left-leaning media platform be the only reason for the top court to open their doors for this unrelenting caucus in their endless fight to bring down the judicial values we cherish?

By questioning the single-member Commission and restructuring it on the plea of this professional legal clique, did the chief justice unwittingly play into their hands? Where will the line be drawn in the process of establishing justice? Or will that also be outsourced to the disastrous tone of these eminent activist lawyers? When the Supreme Court very often invokes the extraordinary jurisdiction in the name of public interest, should it not invoke the same authority to stop this brutally vicious tyranny that is being perpetually unleashed in the name of crony human rights?

If the killing of Vikas Dubey has evinced cheer from an otherwise peace-loving and law abiding public chamber, it is a moment to pause and reflect for the highest court of our land. What will be put on trial before the Chief Justice next week is not just the criminal justice system of our nation but the institutional integrity of the Supreme Court of India. Whether the Court No 1 wants to stand by their notion of integrity the ability to stand by their idea of justice or outsource this for the certification of the career activists, is a conscious choice that the bench will make. The Chief Justice with more than 40 years of significantly successful legal experience is carrying on his shoulders not just the combined wisdom of his predecessors but the unbearable heaviness of the aspirations of young India. Will he set a precedent by ending this stinking menace of judicial harassment by invoking Article 142 and cause a CBI enquiry? The nation is watching.

No. PAW Patrol Wasn’t Canceled. But We Wish It Had Been – Fatherly

During her Friday press briefing, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany touched again on the subject of cancel culture, and lamented that the Nickelodeon show PAW Patrol had been canceled. Calling the program a a cartoon show about cops she grouped it among other cop shows like, Cops and Live PD, which have actually been canceled. Unfortunately for the nations parents, McEnany was (and I know this is shocking) inaccurate. Sadly, PAW Patrol, in all of its saccharine, vivid, extremely grating, Canadian glory remains on the air.

But why would McEnany claim that PAW Patrol was canceled in the first place? Most likely because in the wake of ongoing police violence toward Black people, parents are casting a dubious eye towards PAW Patrols leading pup, Chase. The plucky German Shepherd is, well, problematic. He is a cop-dog and part of a seemingly privatized police force. He apparently operates with impunity, free of warrants, or public mandate. He has a goddamn surveillance drone. Which, you know, feels like the show is grooming a generation to accept the benevolent oversight of a police state.

Thats only a guess, though. Its also possible that Trump simply wasnt able to find his favorite show and assumed the worst.

The thing is that plenty of parents would welcome the cancelation of PAW Patrol. It would be a sweet release. Because for anyone over the age of 8, the show is basically unwatchable. The voices are pitched way too high and unnaturally optimistic. The plots are so simplistic and yet confounding that its likely even the target audience of Kindergartners feels that they are being patronized. And the characters? What is even going on there.

Do you plan on sending your kids back to school this fall?

Yes. I trust that our schools are taking precautions.

No. We don't feel that proper precautions are in place.

I'm not sure yet. It depends on how things progress.

Thanks for the feedback!

Leaving aside Chases fascist tendencies, theres the PAW Patrols owner, Ryder. Hes the child Ayn Rand never had, living out some kind of John Gault objectivist fantasy. Hes the child genius/iconoclast who has somehow managed to privatize the social infrastructure of Adventure Bay by replacing it with specialized dogs. Hes put the clumsiest one in charge of fire response, by the way, so sleep tight Adventure Bay! Even on the merits of his dog ownership, hes terrible. He basically neglects Zuma the water dog, giving most of his attention to his favorites. What kind of role model is that?

The merits of PAW Patrol are few and dim the second you count past It keeps my kid slack-jawed for a half-hour. Believe me, if the show were canceled there would be much parental rejoicing.

Is that cancel culture? Not in the way McEnany and the White House understands it. But lets be honest. Some things deserve to be canceled, simply because they are objectively terrible. PAW Patrol is one of those things and McEnany should be ashamed for getting our hopes up.

A field guide to the pandemic deniers – Salon

Every day there is more data to prove the dangers of the coronavirus. Yet, bizarrely, the more proof we have of the damage of the pandemic; the more vicious and hysterical its deniers. It is hard not to be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of uninformed, deluded ideas covidiots spew on a daily basis. We mourn not just the lives lost and the bodies damaged, but the collective intelligence of our nation. With international news consistently depicting the United States as the dumbest nation in the developed world, it is as if news of the covidiocy is almost as depressing as news of the virus's spread itself.

The trend to what is described as America's move from freedom to"freedumb"has sadly been a long time in the making. The pandemic only painfully reveals a process that was well-documented by Charles Pierce's 2010 book "Idiot America: How Stupidity Became a Virtue in the Land of the Free."

Pierce opens with a story of Americans descending on the Creation Museum in Kentucky, where homeschooled children on field trips can behold a dinosaur wearing a saddle. With stories like these it is not hard to understand how this country lost its grip on even the most basic scientific concepts. It is not a big leap from dinosaurs in saddles to believing thatface masks make us sick.

Shortly before the 2016 election we started to hear that part of the problem with America's stupidity was the fact that social media allows us to exist in information silos or echo chambers where our ideas aren't challenged and where we get a daily dose of confirmation for our brand of personal wackiness. Surely, information silos are a problem, but as the pandemic deniers have shown, there is actually a fairly diverse array of covidiocy types.

In fact, when we lump all pandemic deniers together into the same pile, we miss the fact that what plagues America on acognitive levelis a far more serious disease, one that has neither one symptomnor one easy cure. Here are five main types of covidiots to look out for:

The eye rollers think that all of the news over the pandemic is exaggerated hype. This is the line of reasoning that suggests thatif we didn't test for the virus so well, our numbers would be more in line with other developed nations. The eye rollers think that the coronavirus is just like the flu and that its mortality rates are of no real significance.

You'd think all you'd need to do with an eye roller is show them the inside of an ICU or have them hear stories from those who have been gravely sickened by the virus. But the key to the eye roller is that they aren't going to believe a single piece of evidence because, from their view, all proof of the dangers of the pandemic is manufactured to produce hysteria.

The eye roller is disturbing for the fact that they have a long history of not taking a single critical issue in this nation seriously. So, coupled with their eye rolling over what they perceive as coronavirus hype, they are also likely to believe that we have no racism, no sexism, in fact, no significant problems whatsoever. For them, liberals manufacture issues that aren't real so that they can create social anxiety and elevate their policy platform. These are the people who disparage the Black Lives Matter movement as reverse racism and mock #MeToo as a problem of thin skin.

The shoulder shruggers are your Ayn Rand-style covidiots. These folks get the numbers and the science. They have a full sense of the dead bodies and damaged lungs, but they simply don't care. They epitomize the "profit over people" worldview.

This is the line of reasoningwe saw on displayby Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick who suggested that grandparents should be willing to die in order to save the economy for their grandkids:"My message: let's get back to work, let's get back to living, let's be smart about it, and those of us who are 70-plus, we'll take care of ourselves." According to him, there is no reason to "sacrifice the country" in order to save a few old people.

Like the eye rollers, the shoulder shruggers have a far more pernicious mindset that shapes their views on a wider set of concerns than the virus. These are the folks who see in the virus neoliberal opportunities to capitalize rather than empathize.

The hedonists simply don't want to be inconvenienced by the virus. They want their manicures, haircuts and happy hours. Their own selfishness dominates their behavior and clouds their ability to consider the wellbeing of others. They see the entire world from the vantage point of their pleasure-driven egos and they outright refuse to be inconvenienced for the benefit of others.

The narcissistic hedonists talk about how they have a right not to wear a mask and how those who worry over the pandemic should just stay home."You're infringing on my rights,"they screamany time they are told they can't enter a store without a mask. "This is a free country, and I'm here to shop."

The narcissistic hedonists have no commitment to a social project nor do they care a wit about the common good. They have weighed the costs and risks of their behavior and they think that their own desires are more valuable than their grandparents' lives.

This strain of covidiot also has a long history in this nation. Unlike the eye roller who thinks everything in the nation is already great or the shoulder shrugger who cares more about the economy than society, the narcissistic hedonist places their desires at the center of everything. And, even worse, they think that their own destructive ego-driven behavior is their "right" as Americans.

The self-proclaimed scientists are a unique strain of covidiot that derives from this nation's long resistance to expertise. The self-proclaimed scientist will tell you that you should not listen to Dr. Anthony Fauci.Instead you should listen to them, since they have done "research" and they know more about the virus than world-leading scientists.

Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, recently warned of the dangerous consequences of our national anti-science bias:"One of the problems we face in the United States is that unfortunately, there is a combination of an anti-science bias that people are for reasons that sometimes are, you know, inconceivable and not understandable they just don't believe science and they don't believe authority."

Yet, as Pierce documents in the book I cited earlier, the American tendency to eschew expertise and disparage science has extremely deep roots in our collective history. It is tied not just to religious extremism, but also to the history of anti-intellectualism in the U.S. The urge to put down teachers and professors alongside scientists is part of the American habit of distrusting smart people and it is tied to the idea that some folks would prefer a president theywant to have a beer withover an intellectual or even highly educated president.

The anti-expertise sickness that plagues the United States is sadly to blame for much of the failed U.S. response to the pandemic, but its negative impact on the functioning of our nation goes well beyond flaws in our healthcare system and public health policy. As long as we continue to be skeptical of knowledge and attracted to BS, we can expect our nation to continue to lookless and less like a developed nation.

One of the special features of conspiracy theorists is that they are found on both the left and the right, unlike a lot of the other strains of covidiots. They converge in the bizarre alternate reality of anti-vaxxers. But, regarding the coronavirus, the conspiracy theories are largely skewed to the right.

The range of conspiracy theories about the pandemic is simply too broad to cover in this piece. It spans from theories that the virus was deliberately started by China or by Bill Gates to theories that the virus simply isn't real at all.Naturereportedin March that "the website Biohackinfo.com falsely claimed that Gates planned to use a coronavirus vaccine as a ploy to monitor people through an injected microchip or quantum-dot spy software."

Healthline reported in Junethat 25 percent of people believe unproven theories about COVID-19. This is all to show that there is a strange urge in this country to attach to fantasy theories rather than facts.

The danger to the conspiracy theorist is not just their refusal to accept evidence that challenges their views, but rather their paranoid worries that any evidence is actually propaganda designed to dupe them and cause harm. The conspiracy theorist is so worried thinking that information is manipulation that they lose any sight of what the truth actually is.And as coverage of a Palm Beach County Commission meeting that went viral for the outlandish arguments presented by residents against a mask ordinance (which the Florida county did pass) shows, covidiots tend to mix up their reasons for refusing to wear masks and take the pandemic seriously. Trying to follow thesearguments against wearing masks will hurt your brain.

What's worse is that having to "debate" matters of science and evidence-based medicinetends to leave us fighting each other rather than the virus.Even more disturbing, there is no vaccine for covidiocy: It promises to linger well after the virus has been contained, wreaking havoc on our society, taking up resources and frustrating progress. It's a condition that has plagued our country for decades and it won't be cured until and unless we make a collective effort to prevent its spread.

Mastodon, Tool, Coheed + Cambria, Primus Members Team on Cover of Rush’s ‘Anthem’ – Loudwire

Two Minutes to Late Night continues to deliver some pretty cool quarantine covers, this time delivering perhaps their biggest star power to date, with members of Tool, Mastodon, Coheed and Cambria, Primus and Mutoid Man signing on to rock out Rush's 1975 song "Anthem."

The lineup includes Coheed's Claudio Sanchez on vocals, Mastodon's Bill Kelliher and Mutoid Man's Stephen Brodsky on guitars, Primus' Les Claypool on bass and Tool's Danny Carey behind the kit.

Each of the musicians bring their own unique look to the song, whether it be Kelliher's light goggles, Claypool's gas mask or Brodsky's continually changing backgrounds. But it all makes for a video that not only captures the eye, but delivers a raucous cover that more than lives up to the original.

"Uhhh... Holy Moley. It's Claudio Sanchez, Bill Kelliher, Les Claypool, Danny Carey, and Steve Brodsky covering a Rush song. We're just as surprised as you are," gushed Hall, later adding that in lieu of taking money for the cover, the participants decided to donate their fees to the Cancer Research Institute. Kelliher composed the cover that the collective performed.

"Anthem" was the lead off song on Rush's 1975 album Fly By Night. Neil Peart would name the song after Ayn Rand's novella of the same name, taking inspiration from the piece while working on the lyrics.

Rush served a big influence to a number of musicians, with Primus even plotting a tribute tour to Rush's A Farewell to Kings that has been moved from this summer to 2021.

WAGE SLAVERY – THE WAGE WAR

Wage slavery refers to a situation where a workers livelihood depends on wages, especially when the dependence is total and immediate. It is a pejorative term used to draw an analogy between slavery and wage labor by focusing on similarities between owning and renting a person. The termwage slavery has been used to criticize economic exploitation and social stratification, with the former seen primarily as unequal bargaining power between labor and capital (particularly when workers are paid comparatively low wages, e.g. in sweatshops),and the latter as a lack of workers self-management, fulfilling job choices and leisure in an economy. The criticism of social stratification covers a wider range of employment choices bound by the pressures of a hierarchical society to perform otherwise unfulfilling work that deprives humans of their species characternot only under threat of starvation or poverty, but also of social stigma and status diminution. The view that working for wages is akin to slavery dates back to the ancient world.

In 1763, the French journalist Simon Linguet published a description of wage slavery:
