Personal freedom is still limited in most of the Islamic world – The Economist

By one measure, just 3% of Muslims live in countries that are freer than the world average

Aug 30th 2020

IN HIS WRITINGS Mustafa Akyol, a Turkish-born author and columnist, has argued there is no logical reason why Islam should not thrive in conditions of personal liberty. After all, in a much-debated verse, the Koran insists that there is no compulsion in religion. But the reality of the Islamic world is drearily repressive, and has in some ways been getting worse, according to a report he has just published for the Cato Institute, a think-tank in Washington, DC. It looks mainly at 51 countries where Muslims form at least a plurality of the population.

Only 60m of the worlds 1.9bn Muslims live in countries where the general level of personal freedom is greater than the global mean, while more than 1.8bn live in places where liberty levels are clearly below average, he finds. To reach this conclusion he uses the Human Freedom Index, which his think-tank has developed in collaboration with two others. It measures a range of entitlements, including freedom of movement, expression, identity, recourse to law and of course, religion.

The 60m total is based on aggregating, to 30m, the smallish populations of the handful of Muslim countries which score fairly well on freedomAlbania, Bosnia, Burkina Faso and Kyrgyzstanand then adding the 30m or so Muslims who live in Western democracies. Far down the other end of the scale are authoritarian states, like Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Sudan, and countries which have been convulsed by internal conflict: Iraq, Syria and Yemen. In between are the populous Asian giants with more Muslims than any other countries (Bangladesh, India, Indonesia and Pakistan) which are all nominal democracies, but all of which fall below the index average. It is striking that womens rights seem best observed in formerly communist countries which, although they may not be free in all respects, have at least retained secular law codes. These include Azerbaijan, Bosnia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

Mr Akyol laments the dramatic deterioration in all kinds of liberty over the past decade in Bahrain, Egypt, Syria and Turkey. He finds a more nuanced, and less depressing, picture when it comes to economic freedom: the right to offer goods and services without excessive state interference. On this measure, monarchies (Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates) do better than the global mean, whereas republics established in a burst of republican zeal, such as Algeria and Egypt, score dismally.

Whether their regimes are traditional or secular, Muslim countries in the Middle East and north Africa are generally less free than those in say, central Asia or parts of west Africa. All this adds poignancy to the last article written by the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, entitled What the Arab world needs most is free expression. It was published posthumously in the Washington Post in October 2018, shortly after his murder in Istanbul, in his own countrys consulate.

‘Mental Freedom’ part two – The River Reporter

By KIM OLVER

If you are coming late to the party, or want a refresher on last months introduction to the process I call Mental Freedom, you can find it here. There, I introduced the first three constructs:

Now, lets move on to the next three constructs.

People can get really hung up on emotions. In actuality, they serve two clear purposes, and you can use them as tools to help you rather than allowing them to work against you. Which purpose they serve depends on how long they last.

Humans are quite adept at conducting a utopia in their heads about how life, and everything in it, is supposed to be. In this make-believe place, everyone is responding the way you believe is correct. Its too bad this place will never be reality; there are just way too many variables that we have no control over such as other people, random events and time marching on.

When we encounter something that doesnt match the way we think it should be, we have a brief, involuntary emotion. You cant control whether you become sad, angry, disgusted or worried when things dont match the way you want them to be. Its going to happen and is totally normal; you cant help it, stop it or slow it down. It is what it is.

However, when you dont recognize that brief emotion as what it isa signal that things arent how you want themand you allow it to persist, then it becomes something more than a signal. You are no longer just recognizing life isnt how you want it, now you are harnessing that emotion in an attempt to change life into what you want it to be. You dont know thats what youre doing. In fact, it feels like youve been hijacked and are a victim of these painful emotions that take up residence in your heart. You point your fingers at whatever is wrong in your life and assign blame for why youre feeling the way you are.

This is, of course, a lie you are telling yourself. Your emotions are simply energy. They cant make you do anything or say anything. After the original signal, you choose your emotions as your best attempt to get what you want in that moment.

I know this is a lot to wrap your mind around and it likely goes against everything youve been taught and believe, but I have many examples of this concept helping people. Once you see this truth, you cant unsee it. Think about the last time you were sad or angry about something. Ask yourself what you wanted that you were trying to get with your anger. It was probably some version of the following:

The emotions are painful, yes, but at least they provide something you want.

Another skill on the path to Mental Freedom is the recognition of the control you give the stories you make up in your head. Humans have a need for closurea gestalt, if you will. Life doesnt always provide that, so we make it up in our heads. That isnt so bad, unless the stories you construct are hurtful to you, and they often are. The antidote to this is to question the stories and perceptions you have in your head. I propose that since you are making up the story, why not make up a story that helps you feel better instead of worse? Youre making it up, anyway! You dont know the truth; youre only imagining what might be happening. Why tell yourself stories that dont serve you? Start making up stories that help put your mind at ease. For example, instead of telling yourself your partner just ended your relationship because you arent good enough for them, tell yourself the relationship ended because your partner felt inadequate walking next to you through life. You are never going to know the real reason. Why not tell yourself something that feels good instead of awful?

Think of the worst thing that ever happened to you. Maybe you lost a loved one. Perhaps you are battling a serious illness. Maybe you are a survivor of sexual abuse. In this human experience, there are many versions of pain. Take the worst emotional pain youve ever experienced and give it a number from one to 100. Whatever number you assign, understand that there is at least that same amount of positivity in that very event. If you experienced a 65 in pain, there is a corresponding 65 in GLOW. Many people are never exposed to this concept, so they never find their GLOW. Some dont even know its there, but that doesnt make it untrue.

When most people are experiencing pain, they believe they are at pains mercy. This is only true if you give your pain that power. When I work with people, I ask if they are ready to feel better. If they are, we proceed. If they arent, then I cant help them. If you are in a painful situation and you truly want to feel better, your first step is to realize there is GLOW in your situation. GLOW stands for gifts, lessons, opportunities and wisdom. Once you accept thats true, then you can go on a journey of collecting, recognizing and finding gratitude in those things.

Im not saying your pain isnt real or that it will magically go away. However, when you can collect an equivalent amount of GLOW to your pain, then you will no longer be held hostage by it. You will be able to say thank you to the cause of the pain, realizing it brought along equal value in gifts, lessons, opportunities and wisdom.

I know this is true because Ive been using this concept in my own life and the lives of my clients and have yet to find an exception, and also because its a law of the universe. Every naturally occurring element in our world has an equal number of protons and electronsthe same positive and negative charge, if you remember your periodic table of elements. The same is true for our life events. You just have to look harder for the GLOW because our human brains are hardwired to notice the negative over the positive.

Tuesday Freedom Kicks: Gelmin Rivas to D.C. United, continued fallout at Real Salt Lake, and more – Black And Red United

Good morning, heres some soccer things!

D.C. United acquires striker Gelmin Rivas | Black and Red UnitedThe fanbase reaction to D.C. United signing a forward seems to be irritation that Gelmin Rivas is not a well-known player. I get it, and his resume doesnt scream Golden Boot, but MLS is a weird league. Sometimes a guy arrives with no expectations and finds the league perfect for them. For me, Rivas means we will have fewer games with non-forwards trying to get the job done up front, and that needed to be taken care of.

Maybe hes BWP or Luciano Emilio; maybe hes Danny Allsopp.

D.C. United signs Venezuelan striker Gelmin Rivas | The Washington PostSteve Goff has more details, including length of Rivass contract and the fact that he had already begun quarantining before the announcement in the hopes of being cleared to train ASAP.

Meanwhile, its one guy in, one guy out:

Its not ideal to see academy players heading abroad, but thats life sometimes. Hopefully it works out.

United may have other reinforcements on the way, and this time its someone we know:

Rodney Wallace is still only 32, and has spent most of his non-United career playing for contenders around the league (and in the Brazilian top flight). If offseason hip surgery hasnt slowed him down, he could be helpful at a few spots for the Black-and-Red.

Washington Spirit join DC2026 Partnership Group led by Events DC | WashingtonSpirit.comThe Washington Spirit are formally a partner for the bid to bring the 2026 World Cup to the District.

Employees describe toxic RSL culture: rotten from the top down | RSL SoapboxThe folks at RSL Soapbox have continued doing excellent reporting work when it comes to the internal culture soon-to-be former owner Dell Loy Hansen has fostered. That includes some extremely gross examples of sexism and misogyny, as well as wage theft that would violate Utah law.

Will Weston McKennie succeed at Juventus? Plus Real Salt Lake and youngsters thriving in MLS | MLSsoccer.comThe latest episode of Extratime Radio includes Brian Dunseth giving more inside info on what went down at RSL, and where the club goes from here. Also I guess this Weston McKennie at Juventus thing is a big deal, idk.

2020 fall series to stream globally on Twitch | NWSLsoccer.comRemember the details of the NWSLs fall series broadcast schedule leaving seven games unaccounted for? Well, now theyre accounted for: theyll stream on Twitch in the US, just like they do for international audiences.

Rachel Daly signs new three-year contract | Dynamo TheoryThe Houston Dash re-signed a bunch of players, but there were brief murmurs that something was up with them and captain/forward/club-defining player Rachel Daly. This news puts those rumors to rest.

WELCOME TO SECRET BASE | Secret BaseIm not exactly sure whats going on here, but its got talented weirdos doing weird videos about sports, and a font that brings me great nostalgia, so Im into it.

This post was exactly 500 words until I typed this sentence and ruined it. Happy Tuesday!

Ethereum Is Eating Bitcoin – Forbes

Ethereum, having long played second fiddle to the number one cryptocurrency, bitcoin, is stepping into the limelight.

The ethereum price, climbing more than 10% over the last 24-hour trading period and adding to gains of all almost 300% so far this year, remains far behind the bitcoin pricebut price isn't everything, with the number of bitcoin tokens "wrapped" into ethereum doubling in August.

Ethereums supply of tokenized bitcoins had been hovering around 3,000 until mid-May when the rate ... [+] of new ethereum-wrapped bitcoin tokens suddenly surged.

Bitcoin can be wrapped onto the ethereum blockchain using a number of ethereum-based tokens, such as WBTC, which has surged in popularity since May, according to data from Dune Analytics. During some periods in August, more bitcoin was wrapped onto ethereum than was created by bitcoin miners.

Bitcoin wrapped onto the ethereum blockchain using WBTC is backed 1:1 by bitcoin and minted by locking up bitcoin on the bitcoin blockchain. It's thought that by wrapping bitcoin onto ethereum and making it compatible with smart contracts, users will be able to unlock tools such as lending, liquidity provision, and decentralized exchanges.

"This presents an interesting quandary for bitcoin. While it clearly has more utility after being converted onto the ethereum blockchain, its underlying value ostensibly comes from the 68 terawatt-hours of power that go into securing the bitcoin blockchain each year," Glassnode analysts wrote in their weekly newsletter.

"How much bitcoin has to migrate onto ethereum before the necessity of the bitcoin blockchain itself starts coming into question," Glassnode asks. "And, if this were to occur, what would back the value of bitcoin if not the massive amounts of energy that go into maintaining its existence?"

The value of WBTC--bitcoin wrapped onto the ethereum blockchain--has exploded in recent months.

Meanwhile, the ethereum price is soaring, boosted by the decentralized finance (DeFi) craze that's currently sweeping the bitcoin and crypto world. DeFi is the idea that cryptocurrency technology can be used to recreate traditional financial instruments such as loans and insurance.

"Following a challenging number of weeks for many crypto-assets, ethereums price increase shows it is one of the main alts leading the market," Simon Peters, bitcoin and crypto analyst at investment platform eToro, said via email.

"I agree with Glassnote's reports that bitcoin is no longer investors first steps into cryptomany new investors may be entering the market directly into ethereum or DeFi protocols, rather than choosing bitcoin as their first or only crypto investment as they did in the 2017 crypto bull run."

Bitcoin Rally Fails After Breaking Through $12,000 – Forbes

Bitcoin prices pushed higher lately, but this rally fizzled. (Photo by Nicolas Economou/NurPhoto ... [+] via Getty Images)

Bitcoin prices have rallied modestly within the last 24 hours, rising to their highest in roughly two weeks before losing momentum.

The worlds most prominent digital currency reached as much as $12,070.23 earlier today, its loftiest price since August 18, CoinDesk data shows.

However, the cryptocurrencys upward price movement stalled, and the digital asset has been trading within a reasonably tight range, additional CoinDesk figures reveal.

[Ed note: Investing in cryptocoins or tokens is highly speculative and the market is largely unregulated. Anyone considering it should be prepared to lose their entire investment.]

Joe DiPasquale, CEO of cryptocurrency hedge fund managerBitBull Capital, weighed in on the matter.

$12,000 has continued to be a strong resistance for Bitcoin but the bulls have persisted over the last month, rallying around the $11,000 level to provide strong support, said DiPasquale.

The result is that Bitcoin continues to test this resistance at $12K despite multiple rejections, he added.

Jon Pearlstone, publisher of the newsletterCryptoPatterns, fit the digital assets latest moves into a broader pattern, stating that:

Since Bitcoins breakout above the key price level of $9,500 in late July, Bitcoin has ranged between $10,500 and $12,500.

While there are some bearish signs, the bulls have the edge with a bullish pattern on the weekly chart, he added.

The target is in the $15,000 range which would be a retest of the 2019 high of $14,000, said Pearlstone.

If Bitcoin can break out above that resistance level with strong volume, there are longer term patterns with prices much higher, starting with a test of all time highs around $20,000.

DiPasquale also provided a bullish outlook for the digital currency.

While the move today was too sharp to not invoke profit-taking, selling pressure is relatively balanced and not dominating market sentiment, he stated.

Moreover, the 20-day moving average is now acting as support and indicators, at the moment, are not as overheated as they were during rallies earlier last month.

All these factors together, in our opinion, bode well for Bitcoin, and by association, the crypto market.

Disclosure: I own some bitcoin, bitcoin cash, litecoin, ether and EOS.

Fidelity Is A 1,000 Pound Bitcoin Gorilla In The Making – Forbes

NEW YORK CITY, NY, UNITED STATES - 2020/02/17: A view of an american multinational financial ... [+] services corporation Fidelity Investments logo. (Photo by Alex Tai/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images)

Yesterday, Fidelity filed paperwork with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to create a new fund dedicated entirely to bitcoin, which will require a minimum investment of $100,000.

CEO of Onramp Invest, Tyrone Ross, notes Fidelitys minimum investment size indicates they have no immediate plans to expand into retail offerings, but rather want to focus on the higher end institutional side of the business.

The likely logic behind Fidelitys decision is better margins and pre-existing formula for success via industry leader, Grayscale. Grayscales bitcoin trust caters to high net worth individuals and institutions, and has seen its assets under management balloon over the past few years, now topping almost $5 billion.

Tyrone Ross further comments that Fidelity also knows that they carry a brand legacy that other investment managers and custodians simply cant match. Fidelitys brand recognition could allow them to beat out first movers like Grayscale for the growing pie of institutional capital allocated to bitcoin and other digital assets.

https://www.coinbase.com/price/bitcoin

Additionally, the Boston investment giant has ~$8.3 trillion of assets under management, which in theory, if even a small portion of their clients bought into the new bitcoin fund, it would not take long before Fidelity would rival Grayscale. For example, 1% of client assets into their bitcoin fund would give it $83 billion in assets under management, i.e. greater than 16x Grayscale.

If Fidelitys fund proves successful, the price implications for bitcoin are quite clear. For example, back in June 2020, analyst Kevin Rooke determined that Grayscales trust was buying bitcoin faster than it could be mined post-halving.

Given bitcoin currently has a market cap of $208 billion and just underwent its third halving, the aforementioned scenario could easily happen again if Fidelitys fund gains traction.

Furthermore, it could be more potent this time around. Per GrayscalesValuing Bitcoinreport, only 37% of outstanding bitcoin are actually available for trading. The remaining amount has not been touched in over 1 year.

https://grayscale.co/insights/valuing-bitcoin/

There are numerous questions still unsolved from Fidelitys surprise announcement principally, can it gain demonstrable traction with its existing clientele? If so, Fidelity has the potential to be the next 1000 pound gorilla buying up more bitcoin than is being mined, thus a strong tailwind for price.

Disclosure: The author owns bitcoin and ethereum.

Is Bitcoin About to Explode? – TheStreet

Bitcoin is back in the news. The virtual currency has nearly tripled over the past six months, but could there be further gains in store? To understand what could happen next, we need to look back at an earlier rally.

If you were following bitcoin in the second half of 2017, you might remember a rally that pushed the virtual currency higher by about 700% in less than six months. That rally is represented by the green dotted line.

In 2017, investors became obsessed with bitcoin, which formed a parabolic curve, shown in blue. A parabolic curve is the market's way of telling us that a trading instrument has become detached from reality. Bitcoin started June of 2017 trading near $2300, but by mid-December it had reached $19,600.

Parabolic moves are inherently unsustainable, and this one was no exception. By February, bitcoin had lost two-thirds of its value, falling back to $6000.

Fast forward to 2020. Bitcoin has formed a massive ascending triangle pattern. In order to break out of this formation, bitcoin needs to climb above $13,000, represented by the red dotted line.

The bottom line: Based on the sheer size of this pattern, if bitcoin can close above that $13,000 level, there is no serious resistance until the $19,000 area. In other words, if bitcoin breaks above $13,000, it could challenge its all-time highs.

Russia Blocks Cryptocurrency Websites Ahead of Regulation | News Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News

Russian authorities have blocked a number of websites related to cryptocurrency ahead of the countrys crypto regulation taking effect. A popular exchange aggregator website has already been blocked twice and has now received a third notice.

Russias Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) has blocked popular Russian cryptocurrency exchange monitoring website Bestchange.ru for the third time. The platform informed its users via Facebook on Wednesday:

Dear subscribers, our Bestchange.ru domain has again been blocked in the Russian Federation. Unfortunately, regional prosecutors continue to sue to block Bestchange and other sites for mentioning the bitcoin cryptocurrency.

Bestchange.ru further explained that it had been investigating how to unblock its domain but testing may take some time. The free website helps users find the best offers online, including the best rates for cryptocurrencies, electronic money, and internet banking. The service, launched in 2007, is not restricted to just cryptocurrency.

According to bits.media, this is the third time Roskomnadzor has blocked Bestchange.ru. The first time was in 2017, which was canceled in 2018. The second time was in March last year when the Kuibyshevsky District Court of Omsk issued an order to block Bestchange.ru along with other cryptocurrency exchange websites. It was canceled in May of the same year. According to a court ruling, information about bitcoin was considered prohibited, as it contradicted federal laws of the Russian Federation, the publication noted.

The third time started when the Kotlas city court ordered the blocking of seven cryptocurrency websites in January. Roskomnadzor reportedly received the court decision on June 23 and immediately sent out notices about the blocking.

The publication reported on June 24 that the owners of the sites bitok.shop, lavka-flowers.ru, cryptorussia.ru, prostocoin.com, cryptowikipedia.ru, bestchange.ru and coinpost.ru received notifications that they distribute information prohibited in the Russian Federation and will be included in Roskomnadzors registry of blocked websites. In addition, news.Bitcoin.com previously reported that six crypto websites and two news sites were blocked by the Russian media watchdog.

Bestchange.ru did not shut down, however, as the management decided to appeal the court decision. The court is expected to pass the case to a higher court on Aug. 27. Nonetheless, Roskomnadzor sent out another notice on Aug. 26 about the blocking of the site.

According to the news outlet, Roskomnadzors action is not related to the crypto regulation recently signed into law by President Vladimir Putin, which will enter into force on Jan. 1 next year. The new law gives legal status to cryptocurrency but prohibits its use for payments of goods and services.

What do you think about Russia blocking crypto-related sites? Let us know in the comments section below.

NASA Rover Glimpses a Ghostly Martian Dust Devil Whirling Across The Red Planet – ScienceAlert

Mars may have only a thin atmosphere compared to other Solar System planets, but boy does it make the most of it. Water ice can rise high in the sky to form thin clouds. Wild winds can whip up into uncontrolled dust storms that shroud the entire planet, or create dust towers that extend almost into space.

So it should come as no surprise that NASA's Mars Curiosity rover, beavering away in the Gale Crater, sometimes lays its electronic eyes on Martian weather phenomena and now, it's spotted a dust devil spinning across the rocky crater floor.

Seeing weather phenomena on Mars that we also see on Earth isn't just interesting, though - it can also tell us a lot about seasonal atmospheric changes on the Red Planet.

It's coming into Martian summer in the planet's southern hemisphere, where the Gale Crater can be found, and the atmosphere in the region is heating up. Just as uneven heating of the atmosphere on Earth generates atmospheric movement, so too is the Martian atmosphere affected.

"Stronger surface heating tends to produce stronger convection and convective vortices, which consist of fast winds whipping around low pressure cores," writes atmospheric scientist Claire Newman of Aeolis Research on the Mars Exploration blog.

"If those vortices are strong enough, they can raise dust from the surface and become visible as 'dust devils' that we can image with our cameras."

Dust devils are pretty well understood, and they come about the same way on both Earth and Mars. They form best in relatively flat, dry terrain, when the air at the surface level is warmer than the air above it.

This hot surface air rises through the cooler, denser air, creating an updraft. This causes the cooler air to sink. If a horizontal wind then blows through this vertical circulation, a dust devil whips into action.

They're extremely common on Mars, but we only know this because, as they move across the ground, they sweep up the dust in their path, leaving tracks behind them. Actually seeing them in action on the Red Planet is quite rare, since our observational capabilities are limited, and dust devils themselves are relatively short-lived.

The dust devil above, seen in the top centre of the image, was captured by Curiosity's Navcam on Sol 2847, and covers a span of about 5 minutes, Newman says. Even though it seems ghostly, the fact that we can see it means it was pretty powerful.

"We often have to process these images, by enhancing what's changed between them, before dust devils clearly show up," she writes. "But this dust devil was so impressive that - if you look closely! - you can just see it moving to the right, at the border between the darker and lighter slopes, even in the raw images."

Studying these movies can reveal a lot about dust devils on Mars - where they form, for instance, how they evolve, how long they last, the type of dust they pick up, and how they vary from location to location.

They can also reveal wind speed and duration, which, in combination with meteorological readings, can help scientists learn more about Martian weather, and how dust devils fit into it.

Curiosity is the only operational rover on Mars at the moment (InSight is a stationary lander), so whatever surface information can be gleaned on Martial dust devils is very limited. Mars also has operational orbiters, though, which cover a lot more ground.

These have caught the occasional dust devil in action from space, as well as the many, many tracks they have left behind after they fade away.

NASA puzzles over mysterious Mars ridges billions of years in the making – CNET

The origin of the strange ridged texture of this Mars terrain, as seen by the MRO HiRise camera, is a puzzle.

For as much as we know about Mars, a lot of the planet remains mysterious. NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) snapped a picture of "puzzling" ridged terrain located near a wild region called Aureum Chaos.

The MRO's HiRise camera took a closer look at the area. "In this image we can see much detail, but the origin of the surface texture is still intriguing," wrote the University of Arizona HiRise team in a picture-of-the-day feature on Aug. 30.

From the lab to your inbox. Get the latest science stories from CNET every week.

The HiRise team came up with one possible explanation, which starts with a long-ago layering of sediments left by water or volcanic activity.

"A crudely polygonal patterned ground was created by stresses in the sediments, and groundwater followed the fractures and deposited minerals that cemented the sediments. This was followed by perhaps billions of years of erosion by the wind, leaving the cemented fractures as high-standing ridges," the HiRise group suggested.

But take that idea with a grain of martian sand. "Of course, this story is almost certainly incomplete if not totally wrong," the feature concluded.

Rough landscapes aren't good candidates for rover exploration or human landing sites. This is where helicopters like the one traveling with NASA's recently launched Perseverance rover could one day come in handy.

If successful, the Ingenuity Mars chopper could kick off a new trend in the exploration of other worlds, giving us close-up views of locations other robotic explorers can't visit.

The story of Mars geology is an unfinished book, but we're adding chapters all the time, even if some of them end in question marks.

A Full Corn Moon Rising And A Mars-Moon Match-Up: What To Watch For In The Night Sky This Week – Forbes

The full moon rises beside One World Trade Center in New York City on September 5, 2017 as seen from ... [+] Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Gary Hershorn/Getty Images)

Each Monday I pick out the northern hemispheres celestial highlights (mid-northern latitudes) for the week ahead, but be sure to check my main feed for more in-depth articles on stargazing, astronomy and eclipses.

This week stars with a slight meteor shower, but theres no doubting the star attraction. Rising near-full on Tuesday night and setting near-full on Wednesday morning, the Corn Moonthe final full Moon of the seasonswill dominate the night sky all week. As it wanes, catch it shining beside Mars, the red planet, on Thursday.

Producing a mere six shooting stars per hour on average, the Aurigid meteor shower is nothing to get too excited about, but if youre out stargazing you just might spot one.

Aurigids are created by dust and debris left in Earths orbital path by comet Kiess (C/1911 N1), a long-periodcometdiscovered 75 years ago that orbits the Sun roughly once every 2,000 years.

There was a really big outburst in 2007 when Earth crossed through its densest stream of material, but the next big one isnt predicted until 2077.

Its named after the constellation of Auriga, which is the area of the sky where the shooting stars appear to originate from, but they can appear anywhere in the sky.

A "Strawberry Moon" rises over the Pacific Ocean at Narrawallee Beach, located near Mollymook on the ... [+] South Coast of New South Wales in Australia, June 6, 2020. (Photo by David Gray/Getty Images)

Traditionally the Harvest Moon is Septembers Moon, though technically speaking that refers to the closest full Moon to the September (or fall/autumnal) equinox. That makes Octobers full Moon the Harvest Moon. So what do we call this Moon? In the UK it tends to be called the Fruit Moon, with Corn Moon or Barley Moon offered as a replacement.

Whatever you decide (after all, the names of the Moon are largely fictional anyway), get yourself a view of a clear eastern horizon at dusk today to see the delicate orangey hues of a rising full Moon. For Europe and North America the Moon will rise almost full shortly after sunset tonight.

Once youve seen that majestic sight, ponder the fact that today an asteroid measuring 22 meters by 49 meters will sweep safely by Earth. Already labelled potentially hazardous and entered on the close approaches database of the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS), asteroid 2011 ES4has been known aboutand its trajectory mappedsince 2011.

If you want another glorious sight of the Corn Moon, get yourself up early to watch it sink due west. Although most of us focus on the more convenient full moonrisewhich always takes place in the east around duskthe moonset, close to sunrise, is just as impressive.

As a bonus, tonights sunset and moonrise times are close enough for a third impressive view of the Corn Moon in a twilight sky.

On September 5, 2020 the Moon will appear to be close to Mars.

Just past full and now 86%-lit, the waning gibbous Moon will make an apparent close approach to the red planet. Look east after dark to see the two in conjunction.

Note: Star charts here are for 40 North latitude. If you need exact information for where you are please consult an online planetarium like The Sky Live.

Wishing you clear skies and wide eyes.

Stuck At Home? Explore Mars With The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter – Forbes

The High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera that captured most of these detailed ... [+] images is one of three cameras aboard MRO.

NASAs Perseverance Rover is on its way to Mars, but 15 years ago, another spacecraft made the same months-long cruise from Earth to Mars, carrying three cameras and a suite of scientific instruments. Data and images from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter helped NASA choose the landing sites for rovers and landers like Curiosity, InSight, and Perseverance. Thanks to the MRO, NASA knew where the rovers could land safely, where to do the most interesting science, and where to go next.

Since its arrival in Martian orbit in early 2006, the MRO has given us an unprecedented look at the Martian landscape, gathered a wealth of data on our rocky neighbors geology, and monitored its thin but dynamic atmosphere. Its also helped keep an eye on the landers and rovers on the planets surface, provided photos to help with crash investigations when the ESAs Schiaparelli lander was lost on Mars in 2016, and sent home some truly gorgeous photos that make the dusty red planet feel like a real place.

If theres a particular place or feature on Mars youd like a better look at, you can suggest it to NASA at HiWish. NASA takes these suggestions into consideration when its deciding what to photograph next with MROs High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment, or HiRISE.

Exposed Bedrock In An Impact Crater

Craters can offer windows into the structure of the rocks beneath the surface, and their structure ... [+] can also offer clues about the impact that created them.

When an asteroid or comet slammed into Mars in the distant past, the impact blasted this 44 kilometer-wide crater in the planets rocky surface. The large impact also caused the ground at the center of the crater to rebound upward (picture what happens when you throw a pebble into the water; the water at the center of the splash bounces back upward after the pebble hits). The result is called a complex crater, and that rebound lifted the greenish bedrock in this photo from where it was buried several kilometers beneath the surface. Over time, the terraces at the sides of the crater have collapsed to reveal more of the bedrock.

Walls of Ice And Rock

These sheer cliffs of ice face the Martian poles.

These steep icy cliffs can be found near both Martian poles. Their sheer faces are walls of water ice nearly 100 meters high.

A Surprise Dust Devil

A westerly wind pushed the dust devil into a graceful curve partway up the swirling column of air.

One day in 2012, HiRISE was just casually taking some photos of the Amazonis Planitia, a swath of flat land in Marss northern hemisphere, when it caught this dust devil twisting across the deserted landscape. Based on the length of the shadow it casts, the dust devil is probably about 800 meters tall and 30 meters wide. Its hard to compare a Martian dust devil to its Earthly counterparts, because the Martian atmosphere is so much thinner that even a relatively high wind doesnt actually exert much force.

The Devils Tracks

At one time, planetary scientists expected Mars to be a static, unchanging world, but images like ... [+] this one prove that's not the case.

Another dust devil in Mars southern hemisphere left these tracks in early 2019, reminding us that Mars is a planet with active weather and a constantly evolving surface.

The Storm That Killed The Opportunity Rover

Besides blotting out the sunlight, Martian dust storms generate a lot of electrical activity thanks ... [+] to the slight electrostatic charge of the dust particles they carry.

Although the Martian winds dont pack a huge punch, potential travelers should still take weather reports on Mars seriously, because the planets dust storms kick up a lot of electrical activity and then theres the dust itself. Check out these images of Mars taken before and after a dust storm shrouded the planet in dust and dimmed the Martian skies back in the summer of 2018.

Farewell, Little Space Robot

This is the Opportunity Rover's final resting place after 14 years exploring Mars.

MRO captured this image of the Opportunity Rover in September 2018. NASA wasnt able to regain contact with the rover after the storm passed; unfortunately, the rover ran out of power thanks to all the dust covering its solar panels and blotting out the sky.

Sand And Ice At The North Pole

This is the Martian landscape at its coolest.

The polar landscapes of Mars are a sight to behold. Sand dunes march across the frozen ground during the summer months, and in the winter theyre held in place by a thin layer of frost. The streaked texture on the icy ground between the dunes is a fascinating geological trick called frost heave. If you look closely, you can see piles of boulders scattered here and there along the dark streaks on the ground. NASA explains, In the Arctic back on Earth, rocks can be organized by a process called frost heave. With frost heave, repeated freezing and thawing of the ground can bring rocks to the surface and organize them in piles, stripes, or even circles.

The Highest Point On Mars

Olympus Mons is the second-highest peak in the solar system, next to Rheasilvia on Venus. The ... [+] volcano may still be active, but the last evidence of an eruption is about 2 million years old.

In this image, youre looking straight down at the 21 kilometer-high peak of the volcano Olympus Mons. Geological evidence suggests the volcano first formed more than 3 billion years ago during the Hesperian Period, when the surface of Mars was a tumult of volcanic eruptions and massive floods. Over time, lava flows built Olympus Mons into a mountain more than twice the height of Mount Everest; the youngest lava flows on its slopes probably date to just 2 million years ago. The dark sediment piled around the foot of the mountain came from landslides rolling down off the mountains sides.

An Ancient Flood

Megafloods like the one that dropped these massive rocks in Holden Crater were common during the ... [+] Hesperian Period, when geological forces reworked the Martian surface in catastrophic ways.

In the distant past, Mars had oceans, lakes, rivers, and occasional catastrophic megafloods. When the waters of the Uzboi Valles breached the rim of Holden Crater, the flood dropped 100 meter-wide blocks of stone into the crater. The bright layers you can see on the exposed sides of the rock probably record a much warmer, wetter period of Martian history which is why NASA once had Holden Crater on its list of possible lander targets.

Curiosity Climbs A Mountain

Curiosity has been on Mars since 2012, and it's still going strong.

The MRO captured this shot of its sibling Curiosity trekking its way across a clay-bearing area on the slopes of Mount Sharp back in May 2019, which seems like a century ago now.

Looking Up column: Fiery Mars arrives on the scene – Online Athens

If you have a good, low view to the east, catch what looks like a distant campfire soon after the sky grows dark and the stars come out to shine.

This is Mars.

The beloved Red Planet, long cloaked in awe and mystery, only in the past few decades has started to reveal some secrets, even as more questions arise. Its lure somehow draws us as in millennia past, now in this space-age close to our literal grasp.

Pondered as a possible abode of life, the notion has never been ruled out. Whether that is the case or not (little green martian microbes with antennae living underground with tiny ray guns?), the fourth planet from the sun and the one most similar to our own, is nearing one of its fairly rare close approaches this October.

Mars orbits the sun in 687 Earth days, which is nearly two Earth years, and each time reaches a closest point. This point is referred to as perihelion (the farthest point is aphelion). The distance varies considerably due to Mars highly elliptical orbit. On occasion, it gets close enough to stand out like a fiery beacon, catching even the attention of people who dont ordinarily look up to admire a clear, night sky.

Currently, Mars rises in the east less than a half-hour after twilight fades into night. It is glowing at magnitude -1.6, matching the brightest star of the night sky, blue-white Sirius, which is well seen on winter evenings.

The Red Planet makes its closest approach on Oct. 6, appropriately when autumn in the Northern Hemisphere is known for foliage bursting in red, orange and yellow.

Presently, the planet is about 48.3 million miles from Earth. On Oct. 6 it will be 38.6 million miles.

It hasnt been so close since Aug. 27, 2003 (34.65 million miles). It will be another 15 years (2035) until Mars is any closer than this years passage.

Most of the time, Mars glows at around +2 magnitude or so, and catches little attention other than by amateur astronomers. At these times, Mars is much farther and shows little more than a tiny red disc in a small telescope.

During these rare close passages, even a telescope with a 3-inch mirror or lens can start to show dusky markings and the bright polar cap. It can be very challenging even at these opportunities to see much. The atmosphere needs to be steady as possible, and Mars should be viewed when it is well above the horizon. Examining Mars takes a well-aligned telescope and patience, and as experience builds, you may be able to identify major, dark features shown on maps of Mars.

Even without a telescope, however, enjoy seeing this fiery beacon glowing in the sky. Ponder its mysteries!

Be sure to enjoy Jupiter and Saturn, in the southern sky the next clear evening. Jupiter is most brilliant, on the right side (west) as seen from the Northern Hemisphere.

Saturday night, Aug. 29, the gibbous moon will be to the lower left (east) of Saturn.

About an hour before sunrise, look due east again. Mars will have moved far to the southwest, but in its place is planet Venus, shining very bright.

While you are out that early this time of year, you will see the wonderful constellation Orion with its three-star belt, in the south-southeast. Sirius is to the lower left. You are seeing a preview of December evening skies!

The moon is full on Oct. 1 and is known as the Harvest Moon.Keep looking up at the sky!

Mars board member accused of stamping on the foot of ex-employee at the center of JAB Holdings lawsuit – CNBC

People visit the M&M store in Times Square on July in New York City.

Spencer Platt | Getty Images

A former Mars executive is claiming that a member of the family and the company's board "stamped" on his foot and told him that he would regret his choice to leave for a position with JAB Holdings.

The allegation is part of JAB Holdings' rebuttal against a trade secrets lawsuit filed by Mars in May infederal court in Washington, D.C. The M&M maker claims thatJacek Szarzynski, who formerly served as CFO of Mars' pet-care business and is named as a defendant in the suit, stole upward of 6,000 documents from Mars and passed them over to JAB. The latest salvo, which was first reported by the Financial Times, is a rare look behind the curtain into the two privately held companies.

Szarzynski called the lawsuit "vindictive and unnecessary," saying that while he still had some Mars documents in his possession, he never used or intended to use them for his own benefit or to harm his former employer. He is now a partner at JAB, which is the investment arm of the Reimann family, and serves as chief operating officer and chief financial officer at Pret Panera, one of its business units.

"Mars is a private, family-owned business, and the Mars family reacts with brutality to any perceived slight," he wrote in a court filing Aug. 20. "They were upset that, after 24 years working for Mars, I had the temerity to leave."

Szarzynski claimed that Frank Mars, who shares a name with company's founder and sits on its board, "intentionally" stepped on his foot after one of his final presentations in front of the Mars board in December 2018.

"As Mr. Mars stared at me aggressively, his foot on top of mine, he warned me, 'Tell your new boss we will never forgive him taking people like you from us and will fight him aggressively,'" he alleged.

Mars said in a statement to CNBC that the arguments are "an attempt to divert attention from wrongdoing and paint a misleading picture." The company said it is confident that its lawsuit will be successful.

"Mr. Szarzynski and JAB do not dispute these facts," the company said. "We tried to resolve this issue amicably, but unfortunately we were unable to do so. JAB was unwilling to agree to a comprehensive settlement."

In its original complaint, Mars also accused the former executive of expense fraud.Szarzynski estimated that the expenses could not be worth more than a few hundred dollars and said that he has offered Mars repayment for any errors. He alleged that the company has rebuffed the suggestion.

Szarzynski also claimed that Mars wrongfully withheld incentive compensation awards owed to him with an estimated value of more than $1 million. Moreover, he argued that the dispute should be solved through arbitration with Mars or in Belgian courts, where he resides and formerly worked for Mars.

Destiny 2 Reset Update: Mars Evacuates, A Second Collapse And The Final Week – Forbes

Destiny 2

Destiny 2 is back with the final week of Solstice of Heroes, and theres really nothing new to report there, other than for you to finish up your armor or grind out the packages you want from the EAZ, though I cant run that course anymore lest my eyes fall out of my head.

Rather, I have morphed from Tree Watch, because the damn tree never changes, to Crate Watch, as I learned this week that we have been packing up all the different destinations and stockpiling their supplies in the Tower Hangar, and also by the NPCs themselves.

This week I predicted we would see crates from Mars, and we have. There are Clovis Bray brand crates in the Tower where previously there were only a few barrels. There were not crates by Ana on Mars, so I wonder if this has been an eight week process. Crates in the Tower on one destination, then crates by the NPC the next week, then they move on. That means next week this is finished which leads me to a few things.

We are approaching when this season was supposed to end. Next reset was going to be the last real week of Arrivals before Beyond Light, and now we have to figure out whats changed.

Destiny 2

It seems like its going to be time for the Evacuation to finish, or at least continue, so we can get Travelers Judgement. Supposedly that quest was already delayed a month from August to September, but if Evacuation is supposed to go directly into Beyond Light, then maybe it has to be delayed even further. But all signs point to the idea that it could end next week, so thats one reset to definitely pay attention to it.

The same goes for the Interference quest, which is scheduled to end (ie. the last lore entry is unlocked) the same week. While we dont think this is taking us to some hidden weapon, we may see a different mission that week, or I suppose, the next, when lore runs out. Possibly a fight against Nokris, our taunter in this mission.

The lore word this week is Falling and Eris has some unsettling news from the Darkness:

Another threat of imminent disaster. You declared a new Golden Age, and our enemy declares a second Collapse. They imply it is already in motion. Alarming.

Free fall is indistinguishable from a stable orbit until you strike the ground. Are we already falling? Is our doom fixed? Have I missed the signs this time?

Destiny 2

This would be one thing if it was like, the Vex or something predicting a Second Collapse. But the Darkness predicting one? Telling its already in motion? I dont understand. If theyre not the threat, ie. the ones causing it, then who is? Savathun?

There is no mention of the potential corruption of Zavala in this lore entry, something hinted at in the past. Hes brought up, but not in that context. I did get a Drifter/Zavala conversation during the public event today where Drifter seems to imply Zavala has a crush on Eris. But I am not sure if thats new or not, or if Ive never heard it before.

Again, not much to do this week, which is why Im back to Avengers. While Festival of the Lost is coming in October we have no idea what will happen in Destiny 2 in September, if anything, but I would keep an eye on reset next week for sure.

Follow meon Twitter,YouTubeandInstagram. Pick up my sci-fi novelsHerokillerandHerokiller 2, and read my first series,The Earthborn Trilogy, which is also onaudiobook.

Adin Steinsaltz: Rabbi who brought the Talmud within reach of millions – The Independent

Adin Steinsaltz was an Israeli rabbi who devoted nearly a half-century to translating the Talmud for modern readers, an epic undertaking that unlocked for millions of people a foundational but often impenetrable Jewish text.

He died on 7 August in Jerusalem. He was 83. His death was announced by the Steinsaltz Centre in Israel, which describes as its mission making a world of Jewish knowledge accessible to all, and was reported in publications including the Jerusalem Post, which said the rabbi had been hospitalised for a lung infection. In 2016 he had a stroke that left him unable to speak.

One of the most famous passages in the Old Testament arises in the book of Exodus, when Moses, leader of the enslaved Israelites and their defender before the pharaoh, demands that he let my people go. Rabbi Steinsaltz, as one of the most prominent intellectuals in modern Judaism, adopted a wry take on that ancient cri de coeur: Let my people know.

He was a genius, Walter Reich, a professor at George Washington University and frequent commentator on Jewish thought and affairs, wrote in an email, describing the rabbi as one of the greatest and most consequential scholars of the past thousand years of the Jewish people.

Rabbi Steinsaltz wrote dozens of books, including a seminal volume on Jewish mysticism, The Thirteen Petalled Rose, and commentaries on subjects ranging from philosophy to biblical zoology. In addition to his centre in Jerusalem, he founded religious schools in Israel and the former Soviet Union. He dabbled in science fiction and detective stories, an indulgence allowed, perhaps, by his propensity for 16-hour workdays.

But he was best known for the project that he took on in 1965, when he was in his late twenties and brought his encyclopedic knowledge to bear on an encyclopedic text the Talmud. Its 2,700 folio pages record centuries of rabbinical discourse on a universe of topics relating to ancient Jewish life, from observance of the Sabbath and Kosher dietary laws to agriculture in the Holy Land, civil and criminal law, family relations and Jewish beliefs on the betterment of the world.

Along with the Torah, the Talmud is one of the seminal texts of Judaism. Written in rabbinical Hebrew and Aramaic, it is also deeply arcane, intimidating to nearly all but the most learned scholars, who may devote a lifetime to the study of the Talmud and still consider their understanding of it incomplete. Even translations Rabbi Steinsaltzs was not the first failed to render readily comprehensible the pages that brim to the margins with rabbinical commentaries upon commentaries.

One could not possibly open the Talmud 50 years ago and just start reading it, Lewis Glinert, a professor of Hebrew studies at Dartmouth College, said in an interview. It was in every respect a closed book.

The task that Rabbi Steinsaltz set out for himself was not only to translate the Talmud into modern Hebrew but also to make it user friendly, Glinert said. He added modern punctuation, paragraph divisions, illustrations and extensive background material engendering fury among purists but thrill among uninitiated readers.

This was a way of opening up the Talmud to I wont say the average person, but to Jews and Gentiles who were prepared to invest time and energy into it, Glinert said. For them, it was opening up this whole world ... opening up the ancient Jewish treasures to whoever wants to come and learn.

Rabbi Steinsaltz employed a team of translators who laboured over the task through interruptions including several Middle East wars; a modern Hebrew edition was completed in 2010. The Steinsaltz Talmud (or portions thereof) was translated into several other languages, including English. A volume in Russian was released in 1996.

The Talmud is the central pillar of Jewish knowledge, important for the overall understanding of what is Jewish, Rabbi Steinsaltz once told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. But it is a book that Jews cannot understand. This is a dangerous situation, like a collective amnesia. I tried to make pathways through which people will be able to enter the Talmud without encountering impassable barriers. Its something that will always be a challenge, but I tried to make it at least possible.

Detractors accused Rabbi Steinsaltz of simplifying a text whose wisdom was revealed through the laborious process of deciphering it. Reading the Steinsaltz Talmud in English is like trying to understand what a crossword puzzle is when the words have been filled in, Arthur Samuelson, a reviewer, wrote in The Nation. You get the idea but you miss the point: process is everything.

But even his fiercest critics, according to Reich, are said to hide their copies of the Steinsaltz volumes in brown paper wrappers.

Some American critics, themselves relatively innocent of serious and sustained Talmudic study but moved nonetheless to offer themselves as defenders of the Talmuds purity, have decried Steinsaltzs English edition as false, superficial and a mimicry of the real thing, Reich wrote in 1990.

To say that, however, is to misunderstand the value and purpose of his achievement, the review continued. Whatever simplifications he introduces are more than balanced by the advantages they confer to the student who would otherwise find himself unable to even begin Talmud study.

In 2010, when Rabbi Steinsaltz completed the last of the 45 volumes of his translation, The New York Times reported that 3 million copies had been sold around the world.

According to the Times, Rabbi Steinsaltz was born on 11 July 1937, in Jerusalem, in what was then the British mandate of Palestine. His father, a socialist, fought with the Republicans against Francisco Francos fascist forces during the Spanish Civil War. The intellectuals most venerated in their household were not rabbis but rather Marx, Lenin and Freud.

Nonetheless, Rabbi Steinsaltzs father engaged a Talmudic tutor for him when he was 10 years old. I dont mind about your behaviour or your beliefs, but nobody in our family will be an ignoramus, he recalled his father saying. That exposure to Judaism, along with what Rabbi Steinsaltz described as his innate scepticism towards atheism, led him to Orthodox Judaism.

I came to the point, he told the Times, where the world could not contain my desire for truth. He later became a follower of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement of Hasidism. Under the guidance of the movements longtime leader, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, he adopted the Hebraicised surname Even-Israel.

Known throughout his life for his unbridled intellectual curiosity, Rabbi Steinsaltz studied mathematics and physics at university. He worked as a teacher and a principal before devoting himself to his translation of the Talmud.

Since I started the work at a relatively young age, obviously I didnt take into account the immense effort it requires, which includes not only the work of researching and writing, but also many logistical problems, Rabbi Steinsaltz told the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth in 2009.

But sometimes, when a person knows too much, it causes him to do nothing, he continued, observing that it seems its better, sometimes, for man, as for humanity, not to know too much about the difficulties and believe more in the possibilities.
