Flight to Bahamas Delayed Over Face Mask Dispute – WebMD

July 8, 2021 -- An American Airlines flight from North Carolina to the Bahamas was delayed overnight this week after several issues, including a group of teenage passengers who refused to wear masks.

Flight 893 was scheduled to leave Charlotte, NC, on Monday to travel to Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. Instead, the flight left on Tuesday morning, according to NBC News

At first, the flight was delayed for a maintenance issue, the airline told USA Today. During the 2-hour delay on the tarmac, some of the students removed their face masks due to a lack of ventilation and quite unbearable conditions, said Breakaway Beach, a student travel company. The company was hosting a group of 47 high school graduates on a trip from Boston to Nassau.

The passengers then became disruptive to other customers and refused to follow crew member instructions while onboard, American Airlines told NBC News.

Per procedure, the customers involved were asked to exit the aircraft, the airline said in a statement. We expect our customers to comply with our policies when they choose to fly with us, and we take action when that is not the case.

There were other delays, including flight crew time limits and concerns with Tropical Storm Elsa, according to The Washington Post.

When a second plane arrived, the 172 passengers were directed to another gate at the airport, but the tour group wasnt allowed to reboard at that time, the newspaper reported. The captain made the decision after multiple tour group members refused to wear masks, played music with profane lyrics through a speaker, used foul language, and didnt stay in their seats on the plane while waiting on the tarmac.

Breakaway Beach said the entire group was labeled as unruly and disruptive due to the actions of a few of the graduates.

The act of one individual is not the responsibility of others, and the students that were abiding by the rules should not have had to endure this type of treatment, the company said. The group was treated in an improper and overly harsh manner, causing unnecessary stress and aggravation to the travelers and their parents from afar.

But a passenger who sat near the tour group told WSOC-TV 9 in Charlotte, NC, that a large majority of the graduates were being terrible kids by yelling, using foul language, and being obnoxious.

After numerous delays, American Airlines moved the flight to Tuesday morning because the plane would have arrived in the Bahamas after the immigration and customs office closed, USA Today reported.

Ultimately, American Airlines allowed the tour group to board Tuesdays flight after they all agreed to wear face masks and follow crew instructions.

Roy Seligman Wants to Win Big for the Bahamas in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Orlando, And Then (Like All Spelling and Super Bowl Winners)…

The Scripps National Spelling Bee has been a yearly tradition since 1925 except for a break in 2020 during the height of the pandemic.

The bee has returned this year with the finals scheduled to take place tonight at 8 pm at the ESPN Wide World of Sports on the Walt Disney World campus.

Among the 11 finalists is Roy Seligman from the Bahamas who will attempt to bring home the trophy to his country for the first time in the history of the competition.

WMFE spoke with 12-year-old Seligman and his coach Katina Seymour about preparing for the competition starting with Roys favorite word to spell.

Read the full interview below.

Roy:My favorite word is Clypeaster. It means a sand dollar. I like it because I find a lot of sand dollars when Im in the ocean. C-L-Y-P-E-A-S-T-E-R.

Danielle:So Roy, youre representing a distant neighbor of ours here in the Scripps National Bee, the Bahamas. How does it feel to be representing your country for the first time here in Orlando?

Roy:I feel very proud to have an entire country behind my back.

Danielle:You know, and speaking of Orlando, how have you been spending your time ahead of the Scripps National Spelling Bee Finals? Im guessing lots of drilling, flashcards, something like that.

Roy: Yeah, Ive been practicing and reviewing a lot. But after the finals, Im gonna explore the place.

Danielle:What do you kind of want to see first when you get a chance?

Roy:I want to go to Expedition Everest.

Danielle:How are you feeling going into the competition? Do you have any tips for staying calm under pressure?

Roy:Im feeling nervous. But whenever Im nervous, I just take deep breaths, deep breaths in and out.

Danielle:What does it mean to get to these finals? For you and for your family? I know the last year has been hard with the pandemic.

Roy: Like, Ive put in a lot of hard work. So Im very proud to have gotten this far into the competition.

Danielle: You know, I know that you love to spell but what else do you love? What do you want to be when you grow up for example?

Roy:Some of my hobbies are swimming and playing with Rubiks cubes. Math is my favorite subject. So yeah, I guess theyre kind of connected. Um, Im not sure what Im gonna do when Im when I grow up, Im only 12.

Danielle:Fair point. Fair point. So what would you like? You know, to tell other kids who want to be in your shoes next year? What would you recommend to them? Any tips you can give them?

Roy: Hard work always equals results. I started spelling in 2018. And I just kept working. And now Im right here.

Danielle:Katina, you know, what is it like coaching Roy? And why do you love working with him and his family?

Katina: He is just so, heslike a sponge. He soaks it in. And hes hes definitely very good with application. So we will learn a root, we will learn a language background, the pattern, the etymology. And when were done with that, we are able to just go out and read or look at signs. Look, at I mean a whole list of words and be able to pick out okay, that ones German, that ones Greek, that ones Arabic, that ones Sanskrit. And we are able to do that. And he just blows my mind to apply them in so many ways. So its not about learning every single word. Its like when you know the pattern, then you kind of like know, a big chunk of words that way. And hes really, really great with it. And of course, now he beats me, right? So I love the fact that he can beat me hands down. And he has, I mean, the time of his life, beating me with spelling, but I love it. I love it and love it.

Danielle:What would this mean for you, but also for him and for your country as well, if he wins?

Katina: Its justsuch a joy to see how weve brought good news to our country, just by just making it to this point, and so we want to be you know, the bearer of good news, so to speak. And I think so many people are going to be the better because of it. And then of course itll be a big inspiration to many of our children. Some of them who are have been trying or been you know, on the sidelines looking and wondering if I can do it. I think this will definitely put that you know, nail in it and say listen, yes, I can do it. Somebody else from the Bahamas did it. And so I think this is definitely going to be the inspiration that many people are just waiting on. So for the country, for his family, for myself as a coach who participated in spelling bees in my sixth grade year, and so I have that kind of affinity to it as well. This will be really big for us and exciting for our country.

NBA Finals: How Suns Deandre Ayton and former player Mychal Thompson share special bond as native Bahamians – USA TODAY

Suns' DeAndre Ayton emerging as one of the NBA's best young big men

Duane Rankin of the Arizona Republic breaks down DeAndre Ayton's development and standout play in his first NBA postseason experience.

USA TODAY

MILWAUKEE If only family and friends could engage with NBA players at games the same way they did before the pandemic.

Perhaps then former Los Angeles Lakers player and team broadcaster Mychal Thompson might be here so he could embrace Phoenix Suns third-year center Deandre Ayton before playing the Milwaukee Bucks in Games 3 and 4 of the NBA Finals. After all, Thompson often greeted Ayton before the Suns played the Lakers to further cement their bond as native Bahamians.

"I tell him how proud I am of him and to keep going," Thompson told USA TODAY Sports. "Hes the greatest player weve ever had from the Bahamas."

Ayton and Sacramento Kings guard Buddy Hield represent the lone current NBA players born in the Bahamas, but Hield has never appeared in the playoffs. Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson, one of Mychals sons, has won three NBA titles and shattered numerous shooting records, but he was born in Los Angeles. Ayton and Mychal Thompson have the strongest connection to the Bahamas.

"He will be the main sports ambassador in the Bahamas for the next 15 years," Thompson said of Ayton. "He has that kind of potential to represent the Bahamas and carry the flag for the Bahamas in sports for the next 15 years. I expect him to."

Ayton and Thompson are the only Bahamian-born players to play in the NBA Finals. They are also the only Bahamian-born players to be selected No. 1 in the NBA draft. But as Thompson stressed, "I dont compare to him." Thompson, who won two NBA championships in three Finals appearances with the Lakers (1987, 1988, 1991), predicted Ayton will collect more rings than him. Thompson, who had a 12-year NBA career with Portland, San Antonio and the Lakers (1978-1991), predicted Ayton will have a much more substantial rsum than his.

"Hes going to become a multiple-time All-Star," Thompson said. "Hes going to be a Hall-of-Famer. So hes the best basketball player weve ever produced in the islands."

BOOKER: Stayingfresh to carry a heavy workload against Bucks

WILLIAMS: Evolution as a coach has led Suns to the NBA Finals

BUCKS: GM built team to compete for titles with methodical process

Thompson considers Ayton to be the NBAs third-best center behind the Philadelphia 76ers Joel Embiid and the Denver Nuggets Nikola Jokic, who won this years regular-season MVP. The 22-year-old Ayton reminds Thompson of San Antonio Spurs center David Robinson, who collected two NBA titles, an NBA Defensive Player of the Year award and 10 All-Star nods during a 14-year career (1989-2003).

"He can run the floor, block shots and has a nice mid-range game like Robinson," Thompson said of Ayton. "He just has everything that David Robinson had at that age. If he keeps progressing and staying hungry and healthy like hes showing, he can get to that level."

Aytons eyes lit up and his smile widened when he learned about Thompsons praise of his current skills and long-term trajectory.

"That's big time," Ayton said. "All I have to do is make sure I put my head down and make sure I keep working. With wins, individual accolades come. I just have to keep working and keep winning."

The Suns and Ayton are heading in that direction.

Phoenix has a 2-0 Finals series lead against Milwaukee entering Game 3 on Sunday after dispatching last years NBA champions (Lakers), the team with this years MVP (Nuggets) and another championship contender (Clippers). Ayton has become one of seven players in NBA history to have 12 double-doubles in their first 17 career playoff games. He also has recorded an NBA playoff record for the highest field-goal percentage through that same sample size (71.1%).

With his native country celebrating its Independence Day on Saturday, Ayton conceded that his current motivations go beyond winning his first NBA championship. It also traces back to how Ayton wants to honor the Bahamas.

"There's a lot of people back home supporting me and watching," Ayton said. "I want to put on a show for them and make sure this thing happens. Every game I'm going, I'm bringing the Bahamas with me."

Thompson saw at an early age that Ayton could inspire his home country.

Thompson first met Ayton as a 12-year-old when he visited the Jeff Rogers celebrity camp in Nassau, Bahamas, when Klay Thompson also attended following his rookie season (2012-13). After marveling at the attention Klay received, Ayton aspired to follow his path. By that point, Mychal did not notice anything particular about Aytons game that suggested stardom. But considering Ayton already stood 6-4, Mychal sensed it would still happen.

"We knew he had a future because of his size and his love of the game," Thompson said. "We knew if he continued to grow, he would have a nice future in basketball."

Thompson predicted correctly. Ayton moved to San Diego to study and play basketball at Balboa City School. He then played two more years at Hillcrest Prep Academy in Phoenix, which led to the University of Arizona giving him a scholarship. He then set a program and Pac-12 record for most double-doubles (25) along with Pac-12 Player of the Year honors. It's no wonder the Suns selected Ayton with the No. 1 pick in the 2018 draft.

Why Booker-Ayton are not the next Shaq-Kobe (and why that's a good thing)

USA TODAY Sports NBA reporter Mark Medina explains why Devin Booker and DeAndre Ayton are not the next Shaq-Kobe duo and why that's probably a good thing long-term for the Suns.

Sports Seriously, USA TODAY

As Ayton grew in height and stature, Thompson occasionally gave Ayton what he called "words of wisdom."

"The only thing I told him when he was in high school was stay humble and just be willing to listen and work hard," Thompson said. "You could tell that he was eager to play. So I didnt have to give much advice. He had good people advising him already and a good family. He had all the support he needed."

Therefore, Thompson did not become worried with some of the hiccups Ayton experienced once he entered the NBA.

Ayton sparked immediate comparisons to others in his draft class, including Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic and Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young. Though Ayton plays a different position, questions emerged on whether the Suns would have been better off selecting either guard instead. After all, the Suns had failed to make the playoffs since 2010.

Ayton also sparked questions about his consistent production and commitment. Though the Suns have always praised Ayton for his play and attitude, they conceded he still faced a learning curve with how he trained on the practice court, weight room and film room. Ayton faced a 25-game suspension to open the 2019-20 season for violating the terms of the NBA/NBPA Anti-Drug program after testing positive for a diuretic.

"Hes a great kid. I wasnt worried about him at all," Thompson said. "Hes got such a good strong family structure behind him and such good coaches around him. So I knew he was going to be fine."

Thompson often resisted peppering him with too much feedback. He credited Suns guards Chris Paul and Devin Booker for both demanding and encouraging Ayton to elevate his game. He praised Suns coach Monty Williams for empowering Ayton with constructive feedback, some of which was recently captured in the Suns Game 2 win over the Buck.

Yet, Thompson argued that more could be done to bring out the best in Ayton.

Suns vs. Bucks: What does each team need to do to win NBA Finals?

SportsPulse: USA TODAY Sports' NBA Roundtable breaks down the NBA Finals between the Phoenix Suns and Milwaukee Bucks and one big key for each team in the series.

SportsPulse, USA TODAY

"Sometimes he gets ignored too much, and the Suns dont tap into his fuel that he has in the paint," Thompson said. "This guy is unstoppable in the paint as he has been showing. So they got to treat him like hes a hyper giant star."

They did so when Ayton threw down a game-winning lob off an inbounds pass with 0.7 seconds left in a Game 2 win over the Clippers. Thompson likened that play to when former Chicago Bulls forward Toni Kukoc and former Lakers guard Derek Fisher made winning shots in playoff games off inbounds passes with little time left on the clock. Otherwise, Ayton still has cemented career-lows this season in points (14.6) and shot attempts (10.5) because of the teams depth.

"They have such a dynamic backcourt and outside shooters that sometimes you can fall in love with the 3 and not realize the weapon that you have in the paint," Thompson said. "Its a delicate balance that the Suns need to concentrate on. Deandre is so skilled in the paint with his jump hook and his turnaround shots."

Despite the bullishness on Aytons potential, even Thompson has his limits.

He conceded uncertainty on whether Ayton could supplant Embiid and Jokic soon as the NBAs best center.

"Embiid and Jokic are pretty special, but Deandre can push them," Thompson said. "He can push them for that honor. From now on, he should be no worse than the third-best center going forward for the next few years with a chance to get on that second or first team."

He also sounded skeptical on whether Aytons career would end with comparisons to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Hakeem Olajuwon or Shaquille ONeal.

"I hope so, but those are lofty levels," Thompson said. "Youre talking about five of the greatest ever there. But hes going to be a Hall-of-Famer. No question about it. How great he wants to be is up to him on how hungry he wants to be and how hard he wants to work."

Ayton has wanted to work hard partly to make Thompson proud.

"He's been holding it down for me, supporting me all the way to here," Ayton said. "Hes keeping me in high spirits."

Meanwhile, Thompson sounded in high spirits when talking about Ayton and the influence he has had on him.

"For him to even acknowledge me and know who I am is very flattering," Thompson said. "Its a huge accomplishment. Hes already exceeded anything Ive ever done at this age. At 22, I was in college trying to figure out the next test I was going to have. To see him at 22? Hes two wins away from an NBA championship and is one of the main reasons why. He has far exceeded anything that Ive ever done and will have ever done in basketball."

If you're thinking, "What made Sarah and Bryan Baeumler go to The Bahamas in the first place?" you're not alone. We had the exact same question in mind, and got the opportunity to ask the couple about what initially attracted them to the hotel renovation business, and what their journey to entrepreneurial and television success has been like. Sarah was the first to concede that the experience has been "unpredictable," and Bryan chimed in to share exactly how they came to find themselves in The Bahamas.

"Sarah and I were exploring The Bahamas in the boat with the kids and, obviously, it's beautiful," he said. "Who wouldn't want to just pack up and move to a beautiful island?"Bryan said they just "threw [the idea] out there" that they should move and create a life on the gorgeous island nation. Bryan shared that as they moved forward with their decision-making process, they "tried to find reasons not to do it," but at the end of the day, their zest for life and adventure motivated them.

"At the end of the day, we realized whether we did it or not, in 50 years the end result is the same," Bryan said. "I hit my midlife pre-crisis and I said, 'Well, [on] the back nine, I want to have some fun. I want to do something crazy.'" CHANGE OF HEART: Govt. agrees to host two-day independence concert after criticism from creative community – EyeWitness News

NASSAU, BAHAMAS The government has announced that it will host a two-day music festival on July 30 and July 31, featuring 48 Bahamian musicians from across the archipelago, in celebration of the countrys 48th independence.

The announcement followed criticisms and lobbying from local artists who slammed the government after not being included in the initial plans for this years festivities.

Those artists argued that the initially planned event did not highlight true Bahamian culture.

During a press conference on Thursday, Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Iram Lewis said the government has heard the cries of those artists and acknowledged the dynamics of the creative arts community.

It would be awesome if we could include everyone in this venture but 48 artists representing our 48 years of independence will be chosen from around the length and breadth of The Bahamas so that all islands will be represented, Lewis said, adding that the production will be live-streamed and recorded for rebroadcast.

The two-day event will be keeping in line with this years Independence Day theme, Lets Celebrate Freedom.

The Independence Celebration Committee, headed by Fort Charlotte MP Mark Humes, said the decision behind the initial plans for the celebrations were based on a theme to get back to the countrys root as a Christian nation.

He contended that Bahamians are on the lineup, noting the choir is fully Bahamian.

Wendi Lewis-Knight, one of the artists who advocated for change, offered thanks and appreciation to Lewis for granting an audience with artists on Tuesday about not being represented and presenting the issue to Cabinet.

Were excited about this partnership and we look forward to fostering this relationship with a view of deepening the impact the arts and entertainment industry has on our great country, she said.

Bitcoin mining gets easier with drop in hash rate: Why it is important to mind the environmental cost – Firstpost

Kenneth Kumar MohantyJul 07, 2021 09:24:10 IST

For Bitcoin enthusiasts, first, the good news. It is reported that mining difficulty for the world's largest, and most valuable, cryptocurrency just dropped by more than a fourth. Which means, it is now easier and more profitable to mine Bitcoins.

However, if one scratched beneath the surface, it would become evident that the easing of in mining difficulty is a move that is linked ultimately to the high environmental cost that the activity was seen as extracting. Authorities in China, which accounted for as much as 65 percent of the global production of Bitcoins last year, have cracked down on mining after it became evident that miners were using up massive amounts of energy.

But what makes Bitcoin mining a concern for ecologists? Here's what you need to know.

What is cryptocurrency mining?

What makes Bitcoin unique is that it is nothing like existing currencies in either the way it is built or how it functions. For starters, while it is called Bitcoin, it is neither a coin nor any kind of paper money but just lines of computer code. While conventional coins and notes are either struck or printed at a mint, Bitcoins are created through a function integral to how the network itself operates.

Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are what are known as decentralised money. That is, they are not controlled by a central bank like, say, the Reserve Bank of India, which decides the monetary policy for the country. The RBI gives directions to banks on everything from liquidity to interest rates and the banks in turn execute the directives and also keep a track of the money you keep with them. When you withdraw cash or spend money via cards or digitally, the bank makes a note of it and accordingly adjusts your balance. The people you transact with don't get to know how much money you have in bank as long as the transaction is smoothly done.

Transactions via the Bitcoin are undergirded by the blockchain technology and are tracked via the distributed ledger system. That is, all transactions on the Bitcoin network are visible to every computer that is a part of the network and there is no central authority or bank that tracks the movement of the cryptocurrency. How these transactions are verified and recorded lies at the heart of the blockchain and how Bitcoin is mined.

Why does mining require so much energy?

The Bitcoin network adds transactions to the distributed ledger in the form of blocks. These blocks get added to preceding blocks, thus creating the blockchain. But adding these blocks is not a simple matter of typing in some information and uploading it to the network, because that would mean that anybody could enter any amount in the ledger and compromise its integrity.

To verify transactions and add new blocks to the blockchain the Bitcoin network requires that the transactions are first verified. This is where miners come in. You see, verification of Bitcoin transactions is a very complicated process requiring the cracking of a code, which gives these currencies the prefix of crypto, which comes from cryptography, the art of writing or solving codes.

The code that has to be solved before a transaction is included in a block and the block is added to the blockchain though is not a simple one and that is why miners require awesome computing power to crack it. And, as an incentive for devoting the computer power needed to verify transactions, the miners are rewarded in Bitcoin. Mining, in short, is the process by which the Bitcoin ledger is maintained and new Bitcoins are created.

How much energy do miners use?

The only way in which Bitcoin miners can crack the code is through trial and error and reports say that "the odds of solving the problem are about one in 5.9 trillion". Cracking this problem allows the miners to provide what in Bitcoin jargon is known as 'proof of work' for which they can seek the reward. Which is why the computers or processors that are vying to solve the Bitcoin puzzle need to practically run continuously. And, because processors tend to heat up, they require large amounts of cooling.

The Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index run by the Cambridge Centre For Alternative Finance (CACF), says that if Bitcoin were a country, it would have only 41 countries ahead of it in terms of total annual power consumption. At 65.95 terawatt hours (TWh), Bitcoin uses more energy every year than the likes of Venezuela (65.65 TWh) or Israel (56.4 TWh).

How did it become easier to mine Bitcoin?

It actually had become so difficult to mine Bitcoins that miners started using even more computing power and energy for the purpose. Because Bitcoin has kept growing in value - despite some big fluctuations - more and more people are signing up on the network and even greater numbers of people are now involved in mining the cryptocurrency.

But as China cracked down on mining rigs, which is what the collection of processors are called, the Bitcoin network has now made changes to its algorithm that makes it easier to mine the currency. In fact, computing power on the network, known as the hashrate, has dropped by more than 54 percent since May.

With mining in China likely off the network, there are fewer miners, which in turn means fewer transactions are verified. Reports said that while it used to take about 10 minutes to complete a block, reduction in mining activity has meant that it now takes between 14 to 19 minutes to add a block. Which is why Bitcoin can adjust the difficulty level for mining blocks after every 2016 blocks are added. But no people or body decides what algorithm to set, it is reportedly handled by the network itself, given Bitcoin's decentralisation mantra.

But everybody from Tesla CEO Elon Musk to governments and think tanks and activists have flagged how Bitcoin is so high on energy use. But an improvement upon Bitcoin's mining principle has already been proposed with newer cryptocurrencies now adopting what is known as 'proof of stake' protocols, which require that people must have a stake in the blockchain to be able to verify transactions. By doing away with mining, proof of stake is expected to save much of the energy that now goes into creating cryptocurrency tokens.

Best iOS and Android apps we used in 2021 (so far) – Mashable

Yes, everyone downloaded TikTok this year. But there are plenty of other iOS and Android apps worth using.

Whether we needed to chill out, do some work, or get some fresh air, here are the best apps that the Mashable staff used in 2021.

Angi launched in March 2021, but it may be familiar to some. Formerly known as Angie's List or HomeAdvisor, the app connects people with local contractors and home services such as plumbing, landscaping, and electrical work. Shopping for contractors is an absolute pain, but Angi makes the process just a little bit easier, and lets you see real reviews and ratings from professionals in your area. The quotes are free to you, but keep in mind that Angi charges contractors every time they bid on a project.

Every city thinks its local radio station is the best in the world. But L.A. locals might be right. KCRW DJs spotlight both local and international artists, play live shows, and serve as music supervisors for movies and TV shows.

Luckily, anyone around the world can listen to KCRW programming for free with the station's app. What does that get you? The KCRW app features the excellent "Eclectic 24" channel. As the DJs note on air, this is curated by humans, not algorithms and therefore isn't influenced by money from record labels.

The app has been around for a while, but as of this spring, it became compatible with Apple CarPlay.

Does anyone of a certain (younger) age even own a home printer/scanner anymore? The good ones cost way too much to justify the rare usage and the cheap ones are, well, cheap and prone to breaking down.

So, let's give a collective thanks to Google for making the most of our Android phones and putting the power of a scanner in a convenient app called Stack. Now, scans are as simple as pointing your phone at a document and taking a picture. Stack will convert the image to PDF, and give you the tools to sharpen and crop it. And, since this is a Google app, it's seamlessly integrated into all of your GSuite services, so sharing, uploading, and labeling that scanned doc is only a few taps away.

Forest (iOS, Android)

An oldie but a goodie, Forest which helps people become less dependent on their phones remains my favorite productivity app. Set a desired number of minutes you want to focus, and Forest will lock your phone screen while a virtual tree grows in your app. When the tree grows to completion you can use your device again, and youll earn coins that you can save and use to plant real trees in Africa, thanks to a partnership with the nonprofit Trees for the Future.

White Noise Lite is the only app that's never let me down. It isn't new, but it's literally the only app I could not live without. Quite simply, it plays white noises for me a fake AC that drown out outside sounds to aid sleep. The app has been a godsend during a strange year, during which good rest was tough to come by. If you're a light sleeper, its an amazing, simple tool to get a better night's sleep.

I've been using Aloe Bud since 2018, and it's the only app that makes practicing self-care feel like less of a chore. It allows you to set daily reminders to stay hydrated, fuel up with a snack, move your body, and more, and encourages you to check-in via your personal dashboard whenever you complete an activity.

In a world where most of us are stuck at our desks for a majority of our days, it can be easy to forget to take care of ourselves both mentally and physically. But Aloe Bud's gentle nudges make the experience less judgmental and more positive than other self-care apps I've used in the past. Plus its super retro aesthetic is the cherry on top.

The Best SD Cards and microSD Cards for Your Money – Money

Theres more to SD cards and microSD cards than simply storing photos and videos. Buying the right card will also help make your devices operate at optimum speeds and keep your digital files safe for as long as you need.

SD cards are most commonly associated with digital cameras, whether it be a point-and-shoot or an expensive DSLR used by professionals. Using a low-quality SD card or one without the appropriate specifications for your device can cause occasional compatibility issues or errors while taking photos or recording video. It can also prevent your camera from shooting in data-intensive formats like fast-action burst photos or 4K videos.

On the other hand, microSD cards which can also be used with cameras, if you use an adapter are best suited for smartphones, tablets, drones, GoPros and even gaming consoles, like the Nintendo Switch. These cards allow you to store more photos, videos, apps, music and games without using up your devices internal storage.

Prices for SD and microSD cards start as low as $10 but can run to upwards of $300. Generally speaking, higher prices correlate with cards that worker faster and have more storage capacity.

How much should you pay? Well, if you simply want to add extra storage to save photos from your smartphone, a 128GB microSD (which can cost as little as $15) will do. However, if youre a photography enthusiast, youll need both plenty of storage for high-resolution images and a minimum write speed that is, how quickly the card can record the image of 30MB/s (megabytes per second), which can help you capture even the fastest moving action shots. These can cost from $20 to over $100 depending on their storage capacity.

As mentioned, theres more to buying an SD or microSD card than just price and storage capacity. The numbers and letters written on a cards label like U3 or V30, for example show you what a card is suitable for, whether its best for some extra storage for your smartphone or to shoot high-quality photos and videos with a top-of-the-line DSLR or mirrorless camera.

Heres a rundown of the most important factors to keep in mind when shopping for SD cards and microSD cards, and what all of that confusing jargon on their labels means:

SDHC vs. SDXC. There are two main types of SD and microSD cards: SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) and SDXC (Secure Digital Extended Capacity). The only difference between the two is their storage capacity. While SDHC cards have a capacity of up to 32 gigabytes (GB), SDXC range from 64GB to up to 2 terabytes (TB).

Read vs. write speed. In addition to GB capacity, SD cards include another number on their label: the cards read speed, indicated by MB/s.

Read speed, sometimes also called transfer speed, determines how fast files will uploaded from the card to a computer. For example, uploading images to a computer would take longer with a 95MB/s read speed than it would with a 150MB/s.

The number that photographers should look for, however, is the write speed. This is also expressed as MB/s and reflects how fast the memory card can record data when you snap a photo. The higher the write speed, the faster a camera will perform. This is especially important when taking photos in burst mode (great for action photos with minimal blur) or recording 4K videos.

The write speed isnt included on an SD cards label, but can be usually found in the product description. MicroSD cards generally dont feature the read or write speed on their labels, but these speeds are usually mentioned in the card description.

Speed classes. There are three types of speed classes for SD and microSD cards: speed class, UHS speed class and video class.

The first one, simply known as the speed class, is shown as a C with a number inside the curves of the letter. The most common (and fastest) speed class is C10, which means the card has a minimum write speed of 10MB/s. This is adequate for extra storage, or for anyone who isnt shooting action photography or 4K videos.

Other, slower speed classes include C2 (2MB/s), C4 (4MB/s) and C6 (6MB/s). These, however, are not common anymore and would be quite slow for the performance requirements of most devices nowadays.

The Ultra High Speed (UHS) speed class is represented by a U with the number 1 or 3 inside the letter. A U1 card offers a minimum write speed of 10MB/s, (same as a C10 card) while a U3 card offers a minimum of 30MB/s. Since U3 cards are faster than C10 and U1 cards, these are more suitable for serious photography enthusiasts and are a must when recording 4K videos.

Cards with a U1 or U3 rating are further classified as UHS-I or UHS-II, which are known as the cards bus speed. While the U1 and U3 denote a cards minimum write speed, UHS-I and UHS-II indicate the theoretical maximum read and write speeds.

UHS-I cards are marked by a Roman numeral I on the label and are capable of a maximum speed of up to 104 MB/s. UHS-II cards have a Roman numeral II and can reach maximum speeds of up to 312 MB/s.

Even though UHS-II cards are blazing fast, not all cameras are compatible with them. These cards, however, are backward compatible. What this means is that if you use a UHS-II card with a UHS-I camera, the card will operate at UHS-I speeds up to 104 MB/s.

Lastly, theres the video speed class, usually shown on the label as a V followed by a 6, 10, 30, 60 or 90. Not all cards feature the video speed class designation, but those that do are able to record ultra-high resolution video.

Like the other speed classes, the number represents the minimum write speeds in MB/s. A V60 card would have a minimum write speed of 60MB/s, for example. Cards with a V30 are suitable for 4K recording, while V90 cards support formats up to 8K.

When it comes to storage capacity, a 64GB card should be sufficient to store photos and videos for quite some time. However, the amount of storage you need depends on the resolution and format (JPEG or RAW) of your images and videos, as well as how many you want to save.

If youre planning on always shooting at the highest resolution possible or recording 4K videos, a card with more capacity could be beneficial especially if you dont empty your card frequently. For cards that are going to be used with a gaming console, for example, a storage capacity of 128GB or more is a better option since these will be used for long-term storage (as opposed to photos or videos that most people eventually upload to a computer).

In terms of speed, consider how youre planning to use the card. For users who just want some extra space to store photos, videos and music on their smartphone, a microSD card with a UHS-1 U1 rating is sufficient. Hobbyist photographers who shoot high-resolution photos but never record in 4K can probably get by with a UHS-I U1 SD card as well. But professional photographers who want optimum performance, and anyone who regularly shoots 4K videos, are better off with a U3 card that has a video speed class of V30 or more.

A super cheap SD card may be tempting, even if its from a generic brand youve never heard of. But the safest bet is to buy cards from well-known names like SanDisk, Lexar, Samsung or PNY. In general, this reduces the chances of compatibility issues and data-recording errors.

Still, even brand-name cards can be risky if bought from unknown sellers online. Customers have complained about receiving counterfeit cards that, on first glance, look identical to the original models but tend to offer less memory capacity or lower read and write speeds than the real deal.

We recommend you buy your card from a reputable vendor or from the manufacturer directly. If youre shopping on Amazon, its wise to make sure the product says its shipped and sold by Amazon, the manufacturer or another reputable seller. Once it arrives, carefully check the print on the package and the logos on the card for anything that looks misaligned or poorly printed or other red flags.

Price range: $14 $300 | Capacity: Up to 1TB | Speed class: UHS-I, U3, V30, C10 | Read speed: Up to 170MB/s | Write speed: Up to 90MB/s | Durability: Temperature-proof, waterproof, shock-proof, X-ray-proof

The SanDisk Extreme PRO is one of the most powerful SD cards around, suitable for hobbyists and pros alike. With write speeds of up to 90MB/s, this card can handle even the most demanding tasks without slowing down your cameras performance.

You can use it to shoot high-quality content like RAW (uncompressed and unprocessed images) in burst mode as well as 4K videos smoothly. Also, its 170M/s read speeds guarantee fast uploads from your camera to computer.

Price range: $9 $47 | Capacity: Up to 256GB | Speed class: UHS-I, U3, V30, C10 | Read speed: Up to 150MB/s | Write speed: Up to 70MB/s | Durability: Temperature-proof, waterproof, shock-proof, X-ray-proof

If you dont really need the fastest speed and dont record in 4K frequently, the SanDisk Extreme may be a better option than the Extreme PRO. It comes a close second in terms of performance with read and write speeds that are only about 20MB/s slower. For example, the 64GB Extreme card has a maximum read speed of 150MB/s while the 64GB Extreme Pro can reach 170 MB/s.

Although the Extreme line is slightly slower then the Extreme Pro, it also has a U3 and V30 rating, which means it can handle occasional series of burst photos and ultra high-definition videos. Its also more affordable the 128GB version is available for around $25 while the 128GB Extreme Pro costs over $35.

Price range: $11 $80 | Capacity: Up to 512GB | Speed class: UHS-I, U3, C10 | Read speed: Up to 95MB/s | Write speed: Undisclosed | Durability: Magnet-proof, shockproof, temperature-proof, waterproof

PNYs Elite Performance line is great for beginners and light users who want cheap prices and reliability and arent necessarily worried about maximum performance.

PNY doesnt disclose write speed but, since its read speed is rated at up to 95MB/s, itll probably be slower when compared to our Editors Pick, the SanDisk Extreme. (An SD cards write speed is always slower than its read speed.) Still, PNY Elite Performance cards have a U3 speed rating that offers a minimum write speed of 30MB/s, which is suitable for high-definition photos and occasional 4K recording.

The Elite Performance line is quite affordable. The 128GB card sells for around $17, about $5 cheaper than some cards with faster read and write speeds.

Price range: $50 $190 | Capacity: Up to 128GB | Speed class: UHS-II, V90, U3, C10 | Read speed: Up to 95MB/s | Write speed: N/A | Durability: Magnet-proof, shockproof, temperature-proof, waterproof

The SanDisk Extreme Pro, our Best Overall pick, offers the speed necessary to handle even the most demanding photography and videography. The Lexar Professional 2000x series is, however, almost twice as fast as the Extreme Pro.

Lexar Professional 2000x SD cards are capable of read and write speeds of up to 300MB/s and 260MB/s, respectively. Such high speeds and the V90 video speed class make these cards perfect even for 8K recording. Youll also spend less time waiting for photos and videos to transfer to your computer.

These impressive speeds are only possible when used with a camera that supports UHS-II SD cards. But a 2000x card can be used with UHS-I cameras and still provide exceptional performance, so its perfect for action photography (like sports or wildlife) that require quick processing.

The Lexar Professional 2000xs outstanding performance comes at a steep cost around $190 for the 128GB card. This is expected for an SD card thats aimed at action photographers with professional UHS-II cameras. However, theres a more affordable player in the market with similar specifications: the ProGrade UHS-II V90.

The ProGrade has a maximum write speed of up to 250MB/s, only 10MB/s less than the Lexar. Both are capable of up to 300MB/s read speeds and have a V90 video speed class rating, which makes them suitable for 8K videos. And best of all, the 128GB ProGrade card retails for $140, around $50 less than the Lexar model.

Price range: $10 $200 | Capacity: Up to 1TB | Speed class: UHS-I, U3, V30, C10 | Read speed: Up to 160MB/s | Write speed: 90MB/s | Durability: Temperature-proof, waterproof, shock-proof, X-ray-proof

SanDisk Extreme microSD cards offer the best all-around performance for smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles, drones and more. These cards are fast enough to shoot high-resolution photos and record 4K videos with devices like the Samsung Galaxy S20 or the GoPro Hero 9.

The SanDisk Extreme is available up to a whopping 1TB, and its A2-rated, which means you can store (and use) some of your phones mobile apps directly from it. Not all apps can be saved in microSD cards, but storing the ones that support this feature frees up your phones internal memory and keeps it running fast.

Price range: $10 $200 | Capacity: Up to 1TB | Speed class: UHS-I, U3 (128GB, 256GB, 512GB), U1 (32GB and 64GB) | Read speed: Up to 100MB/s | Write speed: 90MB/s (128GB, 256GB and 512GB models) 20MB/s (32GB and 64GB models) | Durability: Temperature-proof, waterproof, shock-proof, X-ray-proof

The Samsung EVO Select line offers great performance for the price. It might not be as fast as the SanDisk Extreme, but its suitable for anyone who simply wants extra storage for their smartphone or even a Nintendo Switch. Its 128GB, 256GB and 512GB models are also great for taking high-resolution photos and videos up to 4K.

Price: $27 | Capacity: Up to 1TB | Speed class: UHS-I, U3 | Read speed: Up to 95MB/s | Write speed: 60MB/s | Durability: Temperature-proof, waterproof, shock-proof, X-ray-proof

This Pioneer card is even cheaper than Samsung EVO Select microSDs and offers similar performance. The 256GB model retails for $27, while the EVO Select with the same capacity has been going for over $30, even when on sale.

Price: $160 | Capacity: Up to 1TB | Speed class: UHS-I, U1, V10 | Read speed: Up to 150MB/s | Write speed: N/A | Durability: Temperature-proof

The Lexar PLAY is ideal for those looking for maximum storage capacity at a great price. The 1TB card can be found on sale for around $160 (most comparable cards sell for about $200).

Thats enough to store more than 200,000 photos and around 500 hours of high-definition video, ensuring your smartphone, tablet or gaming console wont run out of space for quite some time.

Price range: $13 $98 | Capacity: Up to 512GB | Speed class: UHS-I, U3, V30, | Read speed: Up to 160MB/s | Write speed: 120MB/s | Durability: Temperature-proof, waterproof, shock-proof, X-ray-proof, vibration-proof

Lexar Professional 1066x cards are a smidge speedier than our Best Overall pick, the SanDisk Extreme. With a write speed of up to 120MB/s 30MB/s faster than the SanDisk Extreme microSDXC Professional 1066x cards are fast enough for 4K-quality videos with a drone, GoPro or smartphone, without any errors or drop in performance.

Price: $24 | Capacity: 128GB | Speed class: UHS-I, U3 | Read speed: Up to 100MB/s | Write speed: 90MB/s | Durability: N/A

The Nintendo Switch should work with any microSD card without trouble. But if youre worried about possible compatibility issues or memory errors that could cause you to lose your gaming progress, the Switchs official memory card from SanDisk could be the one for you.

This SanDisk card bears Nintendos official stamp of approval and offers 128G, enough to store downloaded games, screenshots and video captures without using up the consoles built-in memory. Not only does it offer great performance for the Switch, its also designed with Nintendo fans in mind sporting Super Marios Super Mushroom front and center.

Nintendo also offers other microSD cards featuring the logos of some of their most popular games, such as Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing and Apex Legends.

We want also to urge those who are in the same situation like Greatman not to look down upon themselves, they should discover their strength and earn a living from that angle.

Tawonga said he was planning a collaboration with Freddy Manjalima, affectionately known as Kapfupi.

We are looking forward to a lot of collaborations, and plans are at an advanced stage to have another video that will feature Freddy Manjalima aka Kapfupi, he said.

We have also chosen Kapfupi because he is someone who is multi-talented and has attracted a lot of youths through comedies and music. His experience can help us to become stronger in the music industry.

The video, which is expected to hit on all online platforms soon, is a confession to God by someone who has been involved in various abominable practices.

They would have made up their mind to confess all the sins to God and become a born again Christian.

Currently, we are uploading our music on Prince Tawonga Facebook page and very soon the video be on all online platforms, said Tawonga.

As upcoming artistes, we have a lot of challenges which includes financial challenges since it is a burden for us as new beginners in the music industry to secure finances for video shoot and all the expenses, its a serious burden.

The video was shot and edited by Takudzwa Hove Mapembures Naxo Films in Budiriro, who is a veteran in the industry and has done a lot of hit songs for musicians like Jah Prayzah, Tocky Vibes, among others.

Greatman said he appreciates working with upcoming artistes.

I understand that there are people with talents which need exposure, but for them to be known might take a lot of time, he said.

This is the reason why I welcomed them as upcoming artistes, they can bring in new ideas and skills in the system.

PUBG Mobile is an emotion for me as it helped me through really difficult periods of my life: Kezia Blind Ziia Mathew, content creator for Blind…

PUBG Mobile has been one of the most influential mobile game titles to have ever hit the Google Play Store and the iOS market.

While those who werent all that involved with the game might feel like it's just another battle royale title, to the rest, it is an emotion that runs quite deep.

For Blind Esports Kezia Blind Ziia Mathew, PUBG Mobile has been one of the biggest aids through some of the most difficult phases of her life. And in a special interaction with Abhishek Mallick of Sportskeeda Esports, Kezia opens up about her early life, how she got into gaming, the toxicity that she faces from the community, and how she tackles them.

Here is an excerpt of the conversation.

Q. Kezia, I dont think your fans know much about you, outside your YouTube persona of Blind Ziia. So can we start our conversation today by having you tell us a bit about yourself, your childhood, and your journey as a streamer and content creator?

Kezia: Hello! My name is Kezia Mathew, but I am known primarily as Ziia by the video games community. And though my roots are in Kerala, I was born and bought up in Qatar, where I also completed my schooling along with my Masters.

I have always been into public speaking from my formative years, and stage fright was something very alien to me, as I would never get nervous while talking to people. That was one of the reasons why I was provided with the opportunity of being an RJ here in Qatar, as soon as I finished my schooling. Interacting with people and trying to cheer them up was something that was always in me.

I had been into video games ever since I was a kid, and I remember how addictive some of the games like Mario, Supersonic, and Road Rash got for me. So somewhere between all the hustles of life, video games were one constant that I was never able to let go of.

So when I started my YouTube channel, I did not have a long-term plan in mind, as I was only looking to upload one video, since some of my clan-mates wanted me to be the first female video game streamer from Kerela.

I was excited and nervous at the same time. I had just started PUBG Mobile, and I wasnt exactly sure of the audience base. Nevertheless, I marched on, and on October 12, 2019, I did my first stream on the title, on which I got an overwhelming response. My first bit of content went really well, and what surprised me was the fact that the community was able to accept me more than I had initially imagined.

However, after uploading two videos, I took an 8-month long break from streaming, as I wanted to focus on the more competitive side of PUBG Mobile. But I soon came back to streaming, where I would capture gameplay on my old iPhone 6 which was quite outdated and was nearing the end of its lifespan.

The ping was also a very big issue for me as I stream for the middle-east, and a constant 200 ms lag is something I had to work around on a daily. This always got frustrating for me as I wasnt able to properly play the game like others on both the classic and competitive game modes.

But I continued streaming, as I saw myself loving this out of passion and wanted to continue no matter what. Then, my channel eventually started to grow, and then I joined Blind Esports as their streamer and content creator. I soon hit 100k subscribers, and I am proud to state that I am the first female streamer from South India to hit that landmark on PUBG Mobile.

Q. How difficult does it get to maintain the various aspects of your life? How do you strike a balance between the streamer you and the professional you?

Kezia: I work at Qatars Government offices for Public Works, and its very much a regular 8-hour desk job,

In the beginning, I did not expect that I will have to juggle a lot between my work and then stream, but eventually, it became quite difficult to handle, the stress from work, taking care of my family, and then streaming.

As the pressure piled on, I had to keep reminding myself that streaming is my passion, and that its not a task that I need to complete on a daily basis. Its definitely not something that can negatively affect my mental wellbeing.

If I did not want to stream on a particular day, I never really forced myself to do it. If I stream it will only be because of my passion for it and because I love interacting with people. So, yes, it does get tough from time to time, but the perfect work-personal life balance is something attainable and I do see myself achieving it from time to time.

Q3. The esports community, no matter the region, can get rather toxic from time to time. As a woman in the industry, how often were you on the receiving end of sexist and toxic comments while streaming?

Kezia: When people say things are easy for girls or pass comments like Shes a girl, 100k is easy, to them I would say; trust me it WAS NOT easy.

I think I can speak on behalf of all the girls in the video games industry when I say that the gaming community can get incredibly toxic. Toxic to the point that it can affect you mentally, and you will feel like quitting and thinking that its not your platform.

I am often harassed on a daily when I start my stream, and there have been many times when I was on the receiving end of lewd, sexist, and degrading remarks. And I am not even exaggerating when I say that this has been going on on a daily basis.

During the initial days of my channel, even small comments used to hurt me, and there have been multiple occasions when I have actually cried on stream. I know it might sound silly to many, but when you are at the receiving end of all the abusive comments, sometimes its a lot to handle.

People who just sit behind their mobiles, with fake IDs, coming and posting a lot of nasty comments, do not realize the amount of damage that they do to the one on the receiving end. Words are powerful, and not once do these people stop to reflect on their actions.

I even had cases filed against such people, as I feel that people should be aware of cyber-bullying laws that prevail in many countries. I always like to tell my female streamers to be vocal, to be powerful, and to react when they want to react, as there is no harm in being angry and letting it out, rather than taking all the abuse in.

My audiences often say deedi please ignore; so, yes, at times I do ignore it, but I do not believe in ignoring everything. Sometimes such toxic behavior needs to be punished, and you need to teach them a lesson.

I have also had people targeting my stream even with dislike spams, but my likes have always been higher than the dislikes, so it never bothered me. Even though there can be negativity on my stream, there are 1000s of others who are my well-wishers and give me their complete support.

I can happily state that being a streamer has made me more confident and strong-minded. Hence, at the end of the day, these trollers are just bullies, and whatever they say shouldnt affect us.

Reaching this mindset can be easier said than done, but I believe anyone can achieve it, as I live by a quote of CR7 which reads, Your love makes me strong. Your hate makes me unstoppable.

Q. PUBG Mobile is the title that you have created your YouTube channel around. What about the game attracts you so much that you have invested so much time, hard work, and content around it?

Kezia: I used to play a lot of PC and PlayStation titles before picking up mobile titles. But I soon had to leave everything for my studies, and I never really had the time to play much afterward.

I entered the world of PUBG Mobile when I was going through a very tough stage of my life, and Kraftons title helped me escape my immediate reality and even allowed me to make some really close friends along the way.

I eventually shifted from a classic player and started focusing more on the competitive aspect of PUBG Mobile. I had a line-up of my own, with some of the best underdogs from the Kerelan mobile esports community.

This game has changed the face of the Indian esports community, by giving the mobile esports scene a significant boom in terms of community participation.

So ever since I started with the game, I have been hustling each day from being a competitive player and streamer, and to realize my passion in bringing more underdogs into the community.

PUBG Mobile has always been an emotion for me.

Q. After PUBG Mobile got banned in India, did you see a noticeable shift in the matchmaking lobby and the skill difference in the ranked ladder?

Kezia: I dont think I faced many issues with match-making when PUBG Mobile got banned in India, primarily because I am playing on a completely different server.

But from what I have noticed, it is the impact the ban had on many of the stakeholders. Organizations and people who spent money on PUBG Mobile along with a considerable amount of their time were completely devastated and heartbroken

Q. With PUBG: New State on the horizon, what are some of your expectations from the title once it officially launches?

Kezia: As far as I have researched about it, its still in its alpha state and only a handful of users in the US have access to it. I even checked out content from other YouTubers, and I must say that PUBG: New State looks pretty exciting. The concept of the new state is completely futuristic, and it takes us to 2050.

Filled with sci-fi gear and supercars, New State looked much more polished with a realistic, dynamic environment when compared to PUBG Global.

Q. How has your time been in Blind Esports? What are some of the expectations that the org has from you as one of its content creators?

Kezia: Being in Blind has been a bittersweet experience for me. When the tag BLIND associates with your name, it brings in a lot of pressure because the expectations from you will always be very high.

However, being one of their content creators has really opened up opportunities for me to show my creative side to a wider audience. The org grants us full freedom of our content, and though like most orgs Blind might expect us to deliver more and keep entertaining our audience, they get us better brand deals and opportunities so that we can flourish and our hard work finally pays off.

Blind treats us more like their family rather than just content creators and expects us to be with them in all phases of their growth.

Q. With Blind Esports going into a partnership with leading stock and crypto trading platform IQ Option, what are some of your opinions on the merger, and the opportunities that it brings to the table for both parties?

Kezia: These types of partnerships give both the org and the content creators under them to get more exposure in fields outside esports.

With more brands coming in, the value of the org and creators rises and I guess the inclusion of brands in esports will create a big boost for gaming.

Q. Whats the future like for Blind Ziia? What can fan expert from the channel in the coming months?

Kezia: The future is full of new opportunities for me. I am currently working on building my game room and a PC so that I can start creating content for other games as well.

Where Have All The Economists Gone? (Socialism) OpEd – Eurasia Review

If a history professor asserted that black holes dont exist, would anyone pay any attention to him? What about an English professor who advocates Lamarckian evolutionary theory over Darwin? How about a sociologist who believes in alchemy?

What if these folks didnt just have weird beliefs, what if they taught these ideas in their classes? What if they wrote articles and books and gave public speeches extoling them?

The answer is obvious. They would be dismissed as kooks.

And much more. On a typical university campus, the physics department would probably demand that the history professor stop spouting fake physics or be fired. The biology department would react the same way to the espousal of fake biology.

In fact, on most campuses almost every academic discipline would try to protect its turf a well as the scientific integrity of its discipline.

With one exception: economics.

Over my long experience with the academic world, I have often marveled at the fact that people who had never had a course in economics, had never read a book on the subject, who wouldnt know what to do with a supply and a demand curve if they saw themnonetheless feel free to speak with authority on economic topics.

If you search the economics departments of our nations colleges and universities you would be hard pressed to find a real socialist. Thats because economists know a lot aboutsocialism. They have been studying it and thinking about it for over a hundred years.

Outside economics departments, things are different. It has often been humorously estimated that there are more Marxists on the faculty of American universities than there are in Russia or China today.

How is that possible? I blame the economists.

Economists have not only documented the failure of socialism in the Soviet Union and China, they know why the Cuban, North Korean, and Venezuelan economies are basket cases. It isnt complicated. When people at the top design a plan in which everybody who is needed to carry it out has an economic self-interest in not doing so, the plan never succeeds.Good economics is often plain common sense.

Serious scholars have also documented the human costs of concentrating economic and political power. Socialist hellholes have produced imprisonment, torture, starvation and mass murder on a scale never before imagined in human history. In the 20th century, almost170 million peoplewere killed by their own governments. These people were not killed in wars. They were the victims of genocidal murder.

The vast majority were murdered by socialist governments. The Russian communists were the worst (62 million) followed by the Chinese communists (35 million) and then the Nazi national socialists (20 million).

Although socialists claim that workers are exploited under capitalism, no greedy capitalist has ever begun to match what socialists have done.

Josef Stalin, Mao Tse Tung, Fidel Castro and Hugo Chvezlived like kings and accumulated vast fortuneswhile their own people often faced starvation. Kim Jong-un and the current rulers in Cuba and Venezuela are following in their footsteps

Chinese communist leader Mao Tse-tung was the greatest mass murderer in world history, causing at least45 million peopleto be worked, starved or beaten to death. When he died, he was worth an estimated$1 billion.

The worlds second greatest mass murderer, Josef Stalin, killed 20 million, many by forced starvation. Some regard him as one ofthe wealthiest people of all time.

Fidel Castros former bodyguardJuan Reinaldo Snchezsays that the communist leader lived like a king and ran the country the country like a cross between medieval overlord and Louis XV. While ordinary Cubans stood in breadlines, Castro had his own private yacht and his own private island. In Havana, he lived in an immense estate with a rooftop bowling alley, a basketball court and fully equipped medical center.

The puzzle is: Why arent these facts better known? The answer seems to be: In the classes where students should be learning them, the teachers arent doing their jobs.

While students are getting a daily dose of socialist propaganda from economic know-nothings in the other social science departments, what have the economists been saying about the subject in their classes? Nothing. Well, almost nothing.

Pick up just about any introductory economics textbook and you will find very little about socialism. And what you do find will never be front and center. It will be stuck at the back of the book in case the instructor has time to cover it at the end of the semester.

The reason for this is understandable. Most economics teachers consider socialism to be so completely dysfunctional, they see no reason to spend any time on it.

Here is what the economics departments are missing. Given the economic nonsense that is being spewed out all over the rest of the campus, the first things students need to study in introductory economics is socialism. In fact, I believe the entire first semester should be devoted to socialism.

What starts on the campuses doesnt take long to spread. Jane Fonda, Barbra Streisand and other Hollywood celebrities dont think they need to know anything about economics in order to have strong opinions on the subject.

When is the last time you heard Streisand quote Paul Samuelson or Milton Friedman or any economist? With increasing frequency, in a very large part of the national public policy conversation, professional economists are considered completely irrelevant.

To use a military analogy, the economists have left the battlefield, leaving the students behind to fend for themselves. The nation is paying a heavy price for that less-than-honorable retreat.

The Germans and the flag: ‘It’s complicated’ – DW (English)

For two weeks, all over the country, German flags fluttered on cars, on balconies, and in allotment gardens. They were a visible expression of cheerful patriotism, and they lasted from the German national team's first defeat by France until its last, by England. As Italy and England face off Sunday in the final of the European Championships and Germany having bowed out, the flag and the face paint have both been stowed away most likely until next year's World Cup, as long as Germany qualifies.

It was another soccer tournament, the 2006 World Cup in Germany, that marked a turning point in the way Germans related to their flag. "A time to make friends" was the official motto of the championship, and it was the first time the Germans waved their national flag en masse.

"If you compare the stadium crowds [at the World Cups in Germany] in 1974 and in 2006, you can see a huge difference. In 1974, a few people had flags. In 2006, almost everyone had a flag. This was the moment when Germans acknowledged their flag and were happy to wave it," said Harald Biermann, communications director of the Haus der Geschichte in Bonn, a museum that focuses on contemporary German history.

The German flag was highly visible during the 2006 World Cup but quickly disappeared after the tournament

Of course, the national flag is not simply merchandise, as the website of the German Bundestag points out: "Germans identify with these colors as they seldom have before in their eventful history, and this is expressed in many places, not just at soccer World Cups." Is this really the case, or is it wishful thinking on the part of national lawmakers?

The relationship of its citizens to their own flag is more complicated in Germany than in almost any other country in the world, Biermann told DW. He emphasized that this makes Germany a "total exception" among the industrialized developed nations where national flags daily fly in front of government buildings and even people's front lawns.

Each society has its own unique way of dealing with national symbols, and, at first, outsiders often find these peculiarities hard to understand. Something people in other countries may take for granted, such as wearing a T-shirt with the slogan "Vive la France!" or "God bless America!" doesn't transfer easily to Germany. The same is true of the way people view the German flag. But why is this?

Though ubiquitous across the US, German flags seldom fly outside a person's home

Biermann explains it as a consequence of recent history. "Basically, it must be said that Germans have a difficult relationship with national feelings, and the colors black-red-gold are associated with those feelings. Because of the history of National Socialism, many people struggle with their attitude to the nation and to national feelings. This burden still weighs on people, and it takes a toll on our relationship to the nation."

Enrico Brissa is the author of the book "Flagge zeigen! Warum wir gerade jetzt Schwarz-Rot-Gold brauchen" [Show your colors! Why we need black-red-gold right now]. "The way we deal with state and national symbols is characterized by mistakes and confusion because our relationship to our state and nation has not been a consistent one; furthermore, it is one that has been, and is still, repeatedly brought up for discussion," he said.

Many symbols from the National Socialist era are banned by German law. The use of symbols of unconstitutional organizations is punishable by up to three years in prison. These symbols include things like the swastika and the Nazi salute. The use of such symbols that have not beendeclared illegal is also widely avoided by general society.

But Biermann said black-red-gold has nothing to do with either National Socialism or dictatorship: "Quite the opposite. Black-red-gold wasn't used under National Socialism. Instead, the swastika flag became the national symbol."

The German national colors first appeared as a combination in the 1813-1815 "Wars of Liberation" against Napoleon. They were used as uniform colors by the Ltzow Free Corps, a volunteer unit of the Prussian army, whose uniform consisted of black fabric, red piping, and gold buttons. Over the years that followed, the colors became more widely used, and in 1848 the Frankfurt National Assembly designated a flag with these three colors the official flag of the German Confederation.

The choice of black, red and gold goes back hundreds of years

Black, red and gold, it said, were the colors of the flag "under which liberals and democrats joined together to found a common state through the national movement," after which, in the Weimar Republic of 1919, it was "established as the flag of the first German democracy."

But this flag was rescinded by the Nazis when they seized power. "In that sense, black-red-gold really is completely untainted in every respect," Biermann said.

But even if the Nazis were less interested in the colors of today's German flag, right-wing extremists have flocked to them.

"Since the autumn of 2014, we have also been dealing with an insidious reinterpretation of our national colors," Brissa said. "The joy over the World Cup victory in Brazil had not yet faded when, a few months later, the [far-right, anti-Islam] PEGIDA demonstrations began in Dresden. Since then, black-red-gold has become a constant, highly visible accompaniment to right-wing protests 'against the system.' The big presence of these colors on the streets has been surpassed by their even bigger presence on social media. Since then, too many of our citizens believe that black-red-gold is a symbol of the extreme right which, of course, is nonsense."

Despite the flag's lack of connection to the Nazi regime, neo-Nazis and the far-right have latched to the colors

In a speech in November 2020, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier warned that the German flag should not be abandoned by society and left to the right-wing extremists.

"Black, red, gold these are the colors of our democratic history," he said. "We must not allow them to be appropriated and misused by those who want to ignite fresh nationalist hatred."

According to Biermann, one of the reasons for people's uneasy relationship with the German flag is a lack of knowledge about the history and significance of the three colors.

"Many Germans simply don't know what the symbol black-red-gold actually stands for. It must be said that this is a failure on the part of schools," he says. Consequently, people are not sure what Germany's national colors actually mean.

Brissa is committed to raising awareness about black-red-gold: "The aim is to persuade more people to develop positive feelings for the symbols of our state, and to connect with thembecause they have a better understanding of their meaning and content."

It’s time to reframe the United States – The Fulcrum

Anderson edited "Leveraging: A Political, Economic and Societal Framework" (Springer, 2014), has taught at five universities and ran for the Democratic nomination for a Maryland congressional seat in 2016.

As we celebrate our independence this month, the vast majority of Americans need to decide to reframe our country.

The polarization narrative has a stranglehold on Washington and the American people. It is nothing less than the reigning paradigm of American political thought. This is unfortunate because the paradigm is misguided, even though there are certainly pockets of polarization throughout the country and considerable hostility between the most vocal elements of both the Democratic and Republican parties, inside and outside Washington.

We need a new paradigm to reframe what America is. There are three main themes that need to be addressed.

The polarization theme is the first.

Poll after poll, survey after survey, show widespread agreement on many major policy debates, including the need for immigration reform with a path to citizenship, protection of Social Security and Medicare, massive investment in infrastructure, funding for paid parental leave, reforming the criminal justice system, confronting climate change, significant support for child care for the middle class as well as the working class and the poor, and more.

Sign up for The Fulcrum newsletter

One-third of the 240 million members of the American electorate did not vote in 2020, and 44 percent of Americans, according to the latest Gallup poll, regard themselves as independents. Today only 53 percent of Republicans still believe Donald Trump is the rightful president, whereas this figure was in the 70 percent to 80 percent range in November and December.

That figure is nothing to boast about from the standpoint of national health, but when only 25 percent of the electorate identify as Republicans this means about 13 percent of the electorate do not think Biden is the rightful president. That is nothing to brag about if you think Trump is the rightful president.

The idea that we are a country where Democrats are pit against Republicans the way Southerners were pit against Northerners prior to The Civil War is plainly false. Most of us sit somewhere between the two 20-yard lines of a football field. The media and the politicians, however, give most of their attention to the extremists, especially when it comes to getting elected in primaries and most especially in House primaries in gerrymandered districts.

The polarization narrative is one part of the poor framework used for understanding our country of 330 million people who are a complex mix of urban, suburban and rural voters with ever increasing minority representation.

Washington is definitely polarized as the Democratic and Republican parties are engaged in a bitter battle that concerns not only policy differences but a titanic struggle over the 2020 presidential election and the laws federal, state and local that should govern elections. It is the American people who are not.

A second part of the process of reframing America is to accept the fact that we do not live in a society with a capitalist economy. We must acknowledge that we live in a society with a mixed economy. From the New Deal to the Great Society we morphed into a "mixed economy," one in which the government intervenes in a very substantial way in the private sector. We have a massive system of regulation and redistribution, one that gave us and in most cases still gives us everything from Social Security and Medicare to the Affordable Care Act, the Clean Air Act, the National Labor Relations Act, the Violence Against Women Act and the Interstate Highway Act.

We, and many other countries, rejected both capitalism and socialism in the 20th century and carved out a middle ground. We do not have a "capitalist mixed economy," which is what most economists would say. We have a mixed economy, plain and simple. When you mix chocolate cake and vanilla cake you get marble cake, and when you mix capitalism and socialism you get a mixed economy.

One of the chief reasons we need to jettison the concept (and word) of "capitalism" is that it enables Republicans to provide a wrongheaded critique of Democrats as raging "socialists" who have rejected capitalism. Since neither the country nor most Republicans are capitalists in any interesting sense of the term, Republicans need to be denied the opportunity to falsely label Democrats as socialists during candidate campaigns. (Less than 5 percent self-describe that way.)

If the public especially the moderates and centrists, many of whom are independents could come to understand that our political-economic system is not capitalist or socialist in any interesting sense of the term, then they would not be swayed by unfair, grossly inaccurate labeling and fear-mongering by the hard right.

The third element of the new framework concerns public policy debates about the size of the federal government. It is time to drop it.

In the 21st century, the pressing issue about our federal government must not be framed in terms of its size, although of course there are major questions about the nature and extent of federal spending. Instead, the driving issue is more nuanced and indeed pervasive. It concerns whether the federal government effectively leverages resources across federal agencies to solve problems that cannot be solved by one agency alone, including climate change, systemic racism, family policy, job creation, infrastructure and the pandemic crisis itself.

Leveraging resource leveraging, financial leveraging and bargaining leveraging is the dominant way companies, nonprofits, politicians and individuals get things done today. When the Cold War ended, the nuclear family declined and information technology revolutionized business, politics and personal life, traditional lines of authority dissolved.

This was an invitation for resource leveraging, especially of the internet and social media, to take off: If you can no longer order people and countries what to do and your bargaining leverage is weakened, you need to leverage resources to get things done. The most obvious form of resource leveraging is leveraging government investment to generate private investment on a public works project. A reframed America will integrate the concept of resource leveraging across Cabinet departments into the entire framework.

We need to throw out concepts about our country that undermine our ability to live and work together with dignity, compassion and common purpose. It is time to reframe America.

China is asking critical questions of the global normative order, and only India has a clue to the answers – Firstpost

For the burgeoning Indian middle class, theres a China-envy at work as the aspirational segment looks at the roadblocks posed by Indias chaotic democracy

Watching the pomp and grandeur of the events marking the centenary of Chinese Communist Party that culminated in a major speech delivered by CCP general secretary Xi Jinping before a 70,000-strong crowd on 1 July at the Tiananmen Square in Beijing, it is difficult to escape the conclusion that the impressive performance was as much a grand celebration as a geopolitical missive. This was China telling the world that it has arrived.

The awe-inspiring choreography and stunning visuals were meant to express efficiency, control and order against the chaos of democracies. The CCP was perhaps trying to prove that one-party states do not lack in vitality or vivacity. But the Chinese president had a lot to convey of his own. Xis hour-long, extraordinary address gave us a glimpse into the way the party perceives itself, the direction towards which it wants to take China and Xis personal ambitions.

It also made explicit the implications of great power competition with the rapid rise of a Leninist authoritarian state that is integrated with the global economy, brings its own set of toolkits to the table, bends the existing system to facilitate its rise and presents an existential threat to the normative order by offering an autocratic alternative to democratic societies and their political systems.

Xi moved from history to the present and linked the fate of 1.4 billion people of China to the fate of 95 million members of CCP, stating forcefully that the party and the state are inseparable, CCPs right to rule is inalienable and the survival and success of CCP is integral to Chinas national rejuvenation.

Xi also exhorted the virtues of Sinified Marxism socialism with Chinese characteristics as he likes to call it and the importance of ideological clarity as well as malleability in the highly centralised power structure of the CCP. Having secured his position as the core leader for life, Xi also placed equal emphasis on upholding the partys firm leadership and maintaining a strong military that remains loyal to the party as essential conditions for Chinas progress.

Also notable was his pitch that Chinas job is only half done. Xi expressed satisfaction that the first centenary goal of removing absolute poverty has been met, and the party is now marching in confident strides toward the second centenary goal of building China into a great modern socialist country in all respects. The case that Xi was making is that it is essential for him to remain at the helm (beyond the two-term limit that he has already abolished) for China to meet its goals and be rejuvenated a term that appears in his speech 24 times.

Yet amid the restorative rhetoric that sees success as the result of a never-ending struggle (13 appearances), what shone through was the note of defiance, even anger, as Xi took aim at the powers he deems to be antithetical to Chinas rise.

In a passage marked with deceit, aggression and imagery of violence, the Chinese president warned that whoever takes on China will pay a heavy price. Xis message was intended as much for the domestic audience as the United States and other nations that have criticised Chinas mercantilist policies, territorial aggrandisement, wolf warrior diplomacy and oppression of minorities.

Xi said, We Chinese are a people who uphold justice and are not intimidated by threats of force. As a nation, we have a strong sense of pride and confidence. We have never bullied, oppressed or subjugated the people of any other country, and we never will.

Deception is a favourite tool of the CCP, so the irony is lost on Xi. As the chairman of Central Military Commission that controls the partys armed wing, the PLA, Xi has overseen an astonishing phase of Chinese territorial aggression across the land and sea, sparing not even the tiny Bhutan. The millions of Uyghurs Muslims who remain incarcerated for the crime of practicing their religion, or those who were forcibly sterilised may also have something to say.

Xi then delivered the punchline. By the same token, the Chinese people will absolutely not allow any foreign force to bully, oppress or enslave us and anyone who attempts to do so will face broken heads and bloodshed in front of the iron Great Wall of the 1.4 billion Chinese people. The specific phrase has also been translated as heads bashed bloody.

Interestingly, the imagery of violence and bloodshed is toned down in the official English translation where broken heads and bloodshed/heads bashed bloody is replaced by a more sanitised expression. The Chinese foreign ministry version of Xis speech reads, Anyone who would attempt to do so will find themselves on a collision course with a great wall of steel forged by over 1.4 billion Chinese people.

Washington Post, however, points out that the phrase heads bashed bloody was trending on the social media platform Weibo, unhindered by the regimes army of censors as soon as Xi delivered his speech.

It is likely that Xi was playing to the gallery that greeted the words with a lusty cheer. Behind the aggressive rhetoric, however, Xi sent a larger message that the post-War world order is over, and the liberal democratic axis must learn to live with and accommodate the rise of a rival power that has hegemonic designs of its own.

When Xi said, We are also eager to learn what lessons we can from the achievements of other cultures, and welcome helpful suggestions and constructive criticism. We will not, however, accept sanctimonious preaching from those who feel they have the right to lecture us. The Party and the Chinese people will keep moving confidently forward in broad strides along the path that we have chosen for ourselves, and we will make sure the destiny of Chinas development and progress remains firmly in our own hands, he laid down a marker.

Or consider these lines: We will continue to champion cooperation over confrontation, to open up rather than closing our doors, and to focus on mutual benefits instead of zero-sum games. We will oppose hegemony and power politics, and strive to keep the wheels of history rolling toward bright horizons.

Xis candid remarks show China is throwing both a structural and ideological challenge to the US and the hegemony of the America-led liberal order. At one level, it is a power game. An exponentially powerful China is stating that it will brook no opposition in its quest of becoming the regional hegemon and reserves the right to shape the behavior of the states in the geography that it dominates. That means the United States, the ruling hegemon, no longer enjoys primacy in Asia.

Consider Xis rhetoric on Taiwan. Resolving the Taiwan question and realising Chinas complete reunification is a historic mission and an unshakable commitment of the Communist Party of China. We will uphold the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus, and advance peaceful national reunification. We must take resolute action to utterly defeat any attempt toward Taiwan independence, and work together to create a bright future for national rejuvenation. No one should underestimate the resolve, the will, and the ability of the Chinese people to defend their national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

A few days later on 6 July, Kurt Campbell, Joe Bidens Asia handler, said at a webinar that the US does not support Taiwan independence and fully recognises and understands the sensitivities involved". These remarks were promptly played up by Global Times, with added comments that this is the first time that a senior official in the Biden administration explicitly said that the US does not support Taiwan independence, which sent shockwaves to the island of Taiwan.

At another level, China is also confronting the ideological supremacy of liberalism and the feasibility of democratic political system in delivering growth and meeting aspirations putting forth its authoritarian, technocratic model as a viable option.

Xi said, We will develop whole-process peoples democracy, safeguard social fairness and justice, and resolve the imbalances and inadequacies in development and the most pressing difficulties and problems that are of great concern to the people. In doing so, we will make more notable and substantive progress toward achieving well-rounded human development and common prosperity for all.

China is challenging the tenets of liberalism still the most influential global ideology that personal liberty, political freedom and a moral core is the lifeblood of human progress and the desirable end-state. It is posing instead that a one-party rule that tightly controls all the levers and institutions of society and even runs a surveillance state may offer better prosperity and security to its people, and the end-state of human progress is equitable success that may only be achieved by a society that is collectivist, remains unified and is willing to be guided by the iron hands of an imperial government.

American writer and China observer Orville Schell wonders in Foreign Affairs, might the Chinese just be different from everyone else, especially those in the West? Perhaps, some say, Chinese citizens will prove content to gain wealth and power alone, without these aspects of life that other societies have commonly considered fundamental to being human. Then he proceeds to answer the question himself: Such an assumption seems unrealistic, not to say patronising.

China, however, is questioning the validity of the values that the West holds axiomatic and universal for human civilisation. There could be legitimate debates over whether Chinas model of development is inherently brittle and may eventually implode but the CCP is convinced that economic well-being, and not personal liberty, is essential in maintaining the social compact.

Instead of a democratic seal of approval, the party retains legitimacy by delivering on peoples aspirations and growth. It sees representative democracy as a model riven with weakness that breeds chaos and instability.

It would be wrong to assume, however, that the CCP controls Chinese society by keeping it distracted with merely a single-minded pursuit of prosperity. The CCP remains genuinely popular, and it has successfully managed to combine elements of Sinified communism with a staunch nationalist outlook that runs deep in Chinese society. The CCP from Mao Zedong to Xi Jinping has been able to establish itself as the link between Chinas past humiliation and promised greatness.

Consider Xis comments: With a history of more than 5,000 years, China has made indelible contributions to the progress of human civilisation. After the Opium War of 1840, however, China was gradually reduced to a semi-colonial, semi-feudal society and suffered greater ravages than ever before. The country endured intense humiliation, the people were subjected to great pain, and the Chinese civilisation was plunged into darkness. Since that time, national rejuvenation has been the greatest dream of the Chinese people and the Chinese nation.

As Rush Doshi, director for China in Biden administrations National Security Council, writes in his book The Long Game, many of the Chinese Communist Partys early leaders were patriotic youth drawn to this essentially restorative nationalist project. To dismiss the CCPs popularity as brittle and the partys rule as an implosion waiting to happen because it runs an imported Leninist ideology is wishful thinking.

This brings us to the key question on the impact of China model on democracies, specifically for India, since China is our neighbour and its hegemonic ambitions in the same geography holds huge implications for our development. The question is all the more important because India has been unable so far to translate its demographic dividend into economic productivity to mimic Chinas rise.

For the burgeoning Indian middle class, theres a China-envy at work as the aspirational segment looks at the roadblocks posed by Indias chaotic and rambunctious democracy as the cholesterol that impedes its promised economic transformation, as opposed to China where one-party rule gets things done.

But can authoritarian technocracy replace Indias multi-stakeholder politics? According to Harsh Pant of Kings College, London, whatever India did, it did in a democratic framework. Indias economic reforms program was not a dictate from some party high command but the result of a meticulous process of multi stakeholder engagement. Indias choices, therefore, should be understood in this context.

Theres also the risk that democracies face from within, as CCPs fixation on command and control is seen as a necessary ingredient of Chinas success. As BJP general secretary Ram Madhav writes in Open magazine, Increasingly, under the osmosis effect, democracies too are turning to concentration of more and more powers in the hands of governments. The economic strife caused by the pandemic has provided an opportunity to the leaders in several democracies to resort to the same model today.

This is now an open question. It is reasonable to assume, however, that the pluralism and diversity inherent in Indian society, the heterogeneity of geography, not to speak of Indias long argumentative tradition impose implacable roadblocks on the idea of a strong leader doing away with democracy. Indias inevitable rise, and not the hegemonic West, therefore will provide the answer to this question.

How hypocritical Republican lawmakers are trying to put women, minorities ‘in their place’ – Courier Journal

Mary Lou Marzian, Honi Marleen Goldman and Maria A. Fernandez| Opinion contributors

Republican hypocrisy Can you hear us now?

Kentucky Republicans, along with those in other states, are passing laws to keep women and minorities "in their place."Just as the patriarchal mindset and laws were in the 1800s, these men still consider us as their property.

For example, women and Black peoplemust be stopped from voting because women and minorities are inferior to white men.Women need to be constantly pregnant so we cannot be in the workplace where women take jobs away from men.

So, while the Republicans in Washington, D.C., are trying to change what really happened on Jan.6 with their "alternate facts,"let us take a look at the hypocrisy of our own Kentucky legislature. After all, hypocrisy is the soul of Republican propaganda.

Hypocrisy No.1: Kentucky Republicans passed various laws taking away the governors ability to make executive decisions because they said that they wanted to make those calls. Now let us be reasonable would the Robert Stivers and David Osbornes of the world put through this legislation if there were a Republican governor? And let us also be realistic: The Kentucky Senate and House are in session four months each year with each member representing their own specific district. The governor is on the job 24/7 and represents all the people of Kentucky. So, if there is a statewide emergency that requires immediate action, who do you want to make that call?

Voting: Mitch McConnell is determined to block Democrats' voting rights efforts. Here's why

Hypocrisy No. 2:Voting suppression laws.We all know the real reason. These laws are only being passed by the Republicans (or being blocked by Mitch McConnell in the U.S. Senate) to keep women and Black peoplefrom voting.Their cry of preventing vote fraud is a ruse. Many women have jobs with long hours and day care situations.Getting to the polls is difficult without a car and/or dealing with child-care issues. This is not about "voter fraud" but making sure only the votes of the elite white men will be counted so that they can control the legislatures, which then can make even more laws to control women and minorities.

Hypocrisy No. 3.No commonsense gun laws. This should be a no-brainer, but instead has become an irrational rally cry. This is definitely not about the Second Amendment, but rather a red herring just to get GOP voters to the polls. The thousands of women, children and minorities whoare killed each year are their justified collateral for their misguided right of the Second Amendment.

Hypocrisy No. 4.Daniel Cameron is wasting taxpayer money just to improve his name recognition. Each frivolous court case that he files or signs onto cost thousands of our dollars. Not to mention the wasted hours of his staff.

Hypocrisy No. 5. The Kentucky GOP fought the governor on all the COVID restrictions, flaunted not wearing a mask and mandated that all legislators show up for hastily called votes in the Capitol. But these are the same elected officials who were the first to get the vaccine.Of course, they never acknowledged that Kentucky was a leader in the country by preventing more COVID deaths, because of the governor's mask mandates and closings.

Hypocrisy No. 6. The 2022 Elections. The Kentucky Republicans need to keep the seats they have in 2022 in order to redistrict out more Democratic legislators.Kentucky has been cited by numerous national groups forhaving the worst gerrymandered legislative districts in the country. So, these legislators come up with hundreds of outlandish bills in previous sessions, just so that they can tell their constituents what a great job they are doing.Legislators should not be choosing their voters.Democracy means the voters choose their representatives.

Hypocrisy No. 7. Abortion laws.Is this not the epitome of southern white male ownership of women?Does anyone want to believe they care about a women's uterus versus being a flashpoint with their downright wrong medical terms like heartbeat laws and protection of infants born alive? Do these men even consider that the USA has the highest maternal death rate or that more women die from being pregnant and/or childbirth? Forgetthe medical doctors, the Republicans wanttheir constituents to be outraged enough to go vote to keep these stupid laws going until we all are Stepford wives and segregation is the law of the land again!

Hypocrisy No. 8.Republicanscryout against socialism, while every citizen of Kentucky enjoys socialism benefits like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and COVIDrelief packages. Not one of these Republicans (be it an elected official or voter) have ever refused these "socialistic" assistances programs.

Are you listening people?Your votes are being used to benefit only the lives of these white male legislators. The GOP has done nothing to make your life better. At what low point will you be outraged enough to vote them out of office? Wake up!

Mary Lou Marzian, a Democrat, is the Kentucky House representative for District 34. Honi Marleen Goldman and Maria A. Fernandez are community activists who have organized numerous grassroots movements on problems facing this community.

Democrats plan increased policing and incarceration in response to lethal violence in Chicago – WSWS

In what is on track to be a record year of deadly violence in Chicago, Americas third largest city, 104 people were shot over the July 4 Independence Day holiday weekend, 19 fatally, according to local media.

The days leading up to the holiday weekend saw horrific violence, including a one-month-old infant shot in the head while sitting in her car seat, a nine-year-old girl shot in the head while sitting in a car and an eight-year-old girl shot in the arm while in her home.

On July 1, 20-year-old Max Solomon Lewis, a University of Chicago undergraduate studying economics and computer science, was shot in the neck while sitting in an elevated car on the West Side. He died three days later.

The entire month of June saw gruesome levels of gun violence. Just in the final weekend of the month, 10 people were fatally shot and 65 others were wounded. Chicago is averaging about one mass shooting per week since 2019, according to the public radio channel WBEZ.

Just halfway through 2021, highway shootings in the Chicago area have reached the total number for all of 2020.

Last month, Good Kids-Mad City marched to City Hall with a group of 30 youth to protest the lack of action on the part of the city government. The protesters demanded that the city call the epidemic of gun violence a public health crisis and declare a state of emergency.

Democratic leaders have responded to the rise in gun violence by demanding that the administration of Democratic Mayor Lori Lightfoot carry out a crackdown. Different arms of the local government are blaming one another for being insufficiently aggressive in making arrests and imposing long jail sentences.

Lightfoot directed a call for a sense of urgency at the federal level to President Joe Biden during his visit to Illinois last week. Lightfoot assured the media that federal assistance would be coming soon, in the form of a federal strike force.

She told the Sun Times that Chicagos specific needs required talks with federal police agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the US Marshals Service. Lightfoots efforts to bolster the operations of the Chicago police with federal law enforcement agencies began last year under President Trump and are expanding under Biden.

In mid-June, an online webinar was conducted by the United States Conference of Mayors. Mayors from Austin (Steve Adler), Houston (Sylvester Turner), Chicago (Lightfoot), Savannah (Van Johnson) and San Jose (Sam Liccardo) united in a call for increased federal intervention. One week later, President Biden, speaking from the White House, announced new executive and legislative measures to deal with what he called a crime wave and epidemic of gun violence in American cities.

Ahead of the July 4 holiday weekend, Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown was questioned for six hours by City Council members about police plans for the weekend. Last year, in the wake of mass protests opposing police violence that were accompanied by some looting, Brown announced a plan for preemptive arrests of youth ahead of the holiday.

Brown has appeared on CNN to boast of the citys progress in ending violent foot pursuits after police shot and killed 13-year-old Adam Toledo and 22-year-old Anthony Alvarez in a late-night chase last March.

During a recent City Council meeting, Brown blamed modest changes made at the state level, including the elimination of cash bail, for the increase in shootings. He also complained that Cook County judges were handing down lenient sentences.

The Cook County States Attorneys office responded to these accusations with equally reactionary rhetoric, blaming the police for being slow to make arrests. States Attorney Kim Foxx tweeted: Finger-pointing instead of talking honestly about the violence plaguing our city doesnt help bring solutions that make our communities safer. It starts with apprehending those who pull the trigger; police must make an arrest before a case reaches the courthouse door.

Far South Side Alderman Anthony Beale raised the demand for National Guard troops to be deployed to protect the wealthiest area of the city so that local police can return to occupying impoverished neighborhoods. He said, We need to bring in the National Guard to secure the perimeter of downtown and to work along with the police to free up more officers to come from downtown back into the communities, where we can help flood the communities where resources have been taken out of.

The Chicago City Council itself is populated with criminals. Alderman Carrie Austin, the second-longest-serving ward boss, is only the latest elected official to be arrested and charged with bribery. Earlier this year, Patrick Daley Thompson was named in a seven-count indictment for filing false tax returns and lying to insurance officials about $219,000 in loans and other payments hed received.

In January 2019, the citys longest-serving alderman, Ed Burke, was arrested and charged with attempted extortion. In the course of the investigation, Burke, a former Chicago cop, was ordered to remove 23 handguns and rifles from his City Hall and ward offices and turn them over to US Marshals. He currently awaits trial on federal racketeering charges.

None of this comes as a surprise, given the right-wing record of the Democratic Party, exemplified by both Biden and Lightfoot. Lori Lightfoot was the head of the Chicago Police Board, the Chicago Police Department Office of Professional Standards, and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, where she represented the CPD in the lawsuits brought against it.

Biden, then a US senator, was an architect of the 1994 Violent Crime Control and Enforcement Act, also known as the Biden Crime Law. It established mandatory sentencing, which contributed to an explosion in the incarceration rate of poor and minority workers and youth. The United States as of 2020 had more than 2.2 million people locked up in state and federal prisons and local jails.

While calls by elected officials for the deployment of National Guard troops in Chicago has taken on a somewhat routine character over the years, the social crisis has dramatically intensified with the COVID-19 pandemic. Workers and youth must take the threat seriously and organize political opposition to the bipartisan policy of police repression.

The pandemic has brought to crisis levels the malignant social inequality in cities all over the US, and opposition to intolerable conditions is growing, indicated most clearly by the strikes currently taking place in major industries. Striking Volvo Trucks workers in Virginia were joined by their brothers and sisters in Ghent, Belgium, who carried out a wildcat walkout last week. Hundreds of Frito-Lay workers have walked out in Kansas City, and 2,500 Cook County health care and janitorial staff are now in the second week of a strike against the exploitative conditions imposed by the county, led by Democratic Party Chairwoman Toni Preckwinkle.

Biden, Lightfoot and other mayors of both big business parties speak for a political establishment that anticipates and fears growing political radicalization and social opposition to the exploitation and misery for the majority of the population at the hands of a capitalist class getting richer with each passing month.

The bipartisan policy in every city and state in the US is to bolster the police, the first-line repressive tool of the state, on behalf of the interests of the capitalist class. Through its representatives in the Democratic Party, the ruling class insists on a social policy thoroughly hostile to the most basic interests of the great majority of Chicagos population, battered by decades of low wages, slashed services and rising household debt.

The strikes by manufacturing and health care workers, and the memory of last years anti-police violence protests, terrify the wealthy and upper-middle classes. Instead of providing any form of social relief, the Democrats promote sectarian racialist politics aimed at confusing and dividing the massive and powerful multiracial and multiethnic working class against itself.

There are two Chicagos, as there are two cities in every major city: one for the wealthy and one for everyone else. A report by University of Illinois at Chicagos Great Cities Institute analyzing data from the 2017 American Community Survey found that approximately 45 percent of young black men in Chicago, ages 2024, were neither working nor in school. Almost 20 percent of Latino men in the same age group were neither working nor in school that same year.

The disinvestment and abandonment of the working class and poor neighborhoods of the south and west sides of Chicago have created the social distress that fuels the everyone for himself mentality and lack of hope for a better future that feed gang activity and recruitment.

The horrific social conditions in Chicago are a direct consequence of decades of Democratic Party rule in the service of the financial aristocracy. The working class must name its true enemy, the capitalist class, represented by both ruling parties.

The striking workers of Volvo, Frito-Lay and Stroger Hospital point to the solution to violence, unemployment and mass inequality: it must come about through the working classs united struggle for socialism. Billions must be appropriated from the banks and corporations. Resources need to be diverted from the military and police to provide jobs, health care and education for unemployed working class youth.
