Health Care Reform: The ACA and Beyond – Video

11-04-2012 09:51 The US Supreme Court recently heard arguments both for and against President Obama's health care reform initiative, known as the Affordable Care Act. The provision at the center of the legal debate, known as the "individual mandate," requires all adults to buy health insurance, either through their employers or by buying it themselves. Knowledge@Wharton talked with Wharton professor Scott Harrington about the possible outcomes of the court case; the potential implications for businesses and consumers, and ongoing questions about how to improve the country's health care system.

Providence Health Care’s Vision Statement – Video

25-04-2012 12:48 New Vision Statement Reflective of PHC's Growth and Future Path Providence Health Care has a new Vision statement -- one that builds on our rich 118-year history of compassionate care, and looks to the future with boldness, inspiration and urgent desire to improve the lives of British Columbians. The new Vision states: "Driven by compassion and social justice, we are at the forefront of exceptional care and innovation." It replaces the older Vision statement, which had stated: "We will continue to grow as a community, regional and academic health science enterprise that is a recognized leader, and major player, in the provision of health care within British Columbia. We will be respected for our care and services, known for our Mission and Values, acknowledged for the contributions of our teachers and researchers. We will actualize our Vision by being an organization of "caring hearts, creative souls, and resourceful actions." Dianne Doyle, President & CEO, says the new Vision was required to reflect PHC's evolving strategic aspirations and goals for continuing to make leadership contributions in health care delivery, teaching and research. "To me the new Vision acknowledges and symbolizes the excellence and deep commitment each of our staff, caregivers, physicians and researchers have to patients, residents, communities and to enhancing human knowledge," says Doyle. "It's saying 'This is who we are and where we come from -- a strong values- and faith-based organization ...

Experiential Genetic and Epigenetic Effects on Neurocognitive Development – Video

22-12-2011 08:22 ?For several years we have employed psychophysics, electrophysiological (ERP) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques to study the development and plasticity of the human brain. We have studied deaf and blind individuals, people who learned their first or second spoken or signed language at different ages, and children of different ages and of different cognitive capabilities. Over the course of this research, we observed that different brain systems and related functions display markedly different degrees, or 'profiles', of neuroplasticity. Some systems appear quite strongly determined and are not altered even when experience has been very different. Other systems are highly modifiable by experience and are dependent on experience but only during particular time periods ("sensitive periods"). Aaron Bernstein on Biological Diversity and Medicine – Video

12-03-2012 12:02 Plants, animals, and microbes have led to the development of treatments for many diseases including cancer, glaucoma, malaria, inflammatory disorders, high blood pressure, and many other disorders. The staggering loss of biodiversity today affects the ability of researchers to tap natural sources for medicine and exposes people to new risks from diseases like West Nile Virus and Lyme disease. Climate change, one of the drivers of biodiversity loss, also impacts children's health. Aaron Bernstein, MD, MPH, Associate Director of the Center for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard Medical School, Physician in Medicine, Children's Hospital Boston, and Instructor in Pediatrics, Harvard Medical School speaks with Link TV correspondent Miles Benson on the connections between biological diversity, medicine, and health.

Genetic Modification of Foods – Video

09-01-2012 13:49 Visit : The story in the film "GM food and you" is a journey through the maze of complexities surrounding genetic modification. New technologies have a great influence on our daily lives and plant biotechnology is no exception. After all, plants provide us with the food we need to survive. However, plant biotechnology is a controversial area where both the basic research and its application to our daily lives is viewed with suspicion by members of the public. Legitimate concerns have been raised. The content of the film addresses the role genetic modification and plant biotechnology plays and is likely to play in our society. Is GM food safe to eat? What about the impact on our environment? Do we need it? Is all the truth told about GM crops? What about our right to choose? Can GM crops help the third world? (also see: http://www.eusem.com)
