Anatomy of a Fragile Market: What to Make of Stocks

By Michael Santoli

"Christmas in July" is celebrated by families in parts of the Southern Hemisphere and by hucksterish retail chains above the equator. Right now the stock market is experiencing a bit of July at Thanksgiving, its recent downturn producing market conditions last seen in late July, when a sharp, two-month selloff was running its course before a two-month rally got underway.

The Standard & Poor's 500 Index has fallen 7.7% to 1353 in the two months since its multi-year peak of 1465 on Sept. 13, dragged lower by flagging corporate-profit performance and, of course, the rampant anxiety about the tax-and-spending standoff in Washington. The last time the index was in this immediate neighborhood was July 26, when it closed at 1360, having already dropped 10% to 1278 in May and June. During this summer retreat, investors were consumed with the threat of an economic slowdown here and in China, as well as European authorities' ability to counter the debt crisis there.

Here's a comparison of the market's posture and gait in both periods, using a quick survey of some below-the-surface trading indicators.

First, the bad news. On a daily basis the market has traded quite sloppily, showing a dispiriting inability to hold on to morning rallies and a tendency to sag later in the day. For seven straight sessions, the S&P 500 has finished in the lower half of its daily range.

This isn't a foolproof hint of a nasty washout to come, but it emphasizes how little buying energy the market has been running on since even before the presidential election sharpened the focus on the "fiscal cliff" and soured investor sentiment. Even if a hard-headed assessment of the probability of a fiscal resolution with sober estimates of long-term effects yield few disaster scenarios (See: "3 Reasons to Fade a Fiscal-Cliff Freak Out"), the longer we go with the public obsessing over it in a substance vacuum the more it could invite a cascade of anxious selling.

The headline S&P 500 is now as "oversold" or as far below its intermediate-term trend - as it was at the market lows in late spring, and all 10 of its industry sectors are appreciably below their three-month trajectory. When such extremes are reached, it tends to mean that the market should soon at least bounce, and if it doesn't, the decline could get out of hand quickly.

The relatively orderly, if oppressive, tone of the correction has so far prevented the sort of visceral, climactic panic selling that frequently marks the final "give-up" phase of a market retrenchment.

The weekly market-sentiment poll by the American Association of Individual Investors release Thursday showed a welling up of concern among the public, with avowed bears outnumbering market optimists 48% to 28%, similar to the 43%-28% split the third week in July. This is faintly encouraging, as bearishness usually peaks as stocks reach a trading bottom.

Yet it has gone much remarked that the S&P 500 VIX index (^VIX) of protective-options pricing has remained unusually subdued during the market drop, defying its typical tendency to surge in nasty markets along with investor fear. While this could imply that sophisticated traders are loath to price in major immediate losses, similar action in the past has also occurred in the midst of treacherous bear markets such as in 2000.

'Grey's Anatomy' Thursday episode based on illness of star's daughter

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Many people know actress Chandra Wilson as tough-talking Dr. Miranda Bailey on ABC's "Grey's Anatomy." But what they don't know is that behind the scenes, Wilson and her daughter, Serena, lived a real-life medical drama of their own.

Wilson's daughter was suffering and no one had answers. In 2009, Serena ended up in the ER with nausea and severe vomiting.

"I thought I was going to die from it," said Serena.

The days of non-stop vomiting happened again and again. Serena lost more than 20 pounds. Scans, scopes and other tests couldn't find anything wrong. Doctors told Wilson her daughter was either a drama queen or a drug addict.

"You're depressed, or you're suffering from anxiety, you need to go therapy, you're having problems at home. You can make yourself stop," Wison said, recounting what doctors were telling her and her daughter.

Wilson listened, but she knew her daughter.

"That type of writhing pain, that type of constant, non-stop all consuming nausea -- you can't make that up," she said.

After a year, Serena and her mom found Dr. Richard Bowles at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. He diagnosed her with Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome, or CVS.

"The vast majority of patients with this disorder don't know that they have it and they're not being treated appropriately," said Bowels.

Now, Wilson is merging real life with life on-screen by directing an episode dealing with Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome on "Grey's Anatomy."

Constance Zimmer

A new doctor is coming to Seattle Grace!

Constance Zimmer has landed a recurring role on Grey's Anatomy, TVGuide.com has learned.

Grey's Anatomy Exclusive: Nip/Tuck's Roma Maffia lands multi-episode arc

The Entourage and Boston Legal alum will play Dr. Cahill, a confident, self-possessed and laser-focused doc with a wicked sense of humor. Details of her specialty are being kept under wraps, but we'd like to think she could be another surgical fellow who keeps the attendings on their toes. Or maybe she's a new love interest for Owen (Kevin McKidd). Yeah, we said it. Who do you think she'll tangle with?

Zimmer's casting follows that of Nip/Tuck alum Roma Maffia, who will play a Seattle Grace board member in a potentially recurring role.

Zimmer, whose credits also include Royal Pains, Pushing Daisies and the upcoming Netflix series House of Cards, will first appear in an episode slated for late January.

Grey's Anatomy airs Thursdays at 9/8c on ABC.

'Grey's Anatomy' recap: Law and Order

DECISIONS, DECISIONS The Seattle Grace doctors who survived last season's fatal plane crash -- like Callie (Sara Ramierz) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) -- had to make decisions about how to proceed with the proposed lawsuit.

Last nights episode of Greys Anatomy -- titled Second Opinion -- was, simply put, all over the damn place. No second opinion needed on that topic. If the writers were intending to put out an hour of television that touched on nearly all the storylines going on in the show, then they surely succeeded. However, they also surely succeeded in making what was pretty much a totally schitzo installment of Greys that ran amok among all the strands of whats happening at Seattle Grace currently. (Apologies now to star Chandra Wilson, who directed the episode.)

And before you naysay about that commentary, Ill just admit: No, Im never really satisfied. I know that I complain when the show ignores certain characters, and then also -- in the case of last nights hour -- I complain when they do touch on every character. The only thing I have to believe is that there is indeed a way to weave several storylines together in a smart way. I believe that, mostly, because I know this show can do that. Its tricky, though. And for the most part, this season of Greys has been good -- I've said as much in several of my recaps here on EW.com. Last night certainly wasnt the series weakest, but it wasnt the strongest, either. It had its good moments, and its bad.

The primary storyline seemed to the be the on-going saga about the pending lawsuit that the doctors affected by the plane crash last season -- Cristina, Derek, Callie (Arizonas proxy), and Meredith -- are trying to get off the ground. The dirty work began in earnest, as the doctors were told to spill the beans about how theyd been affected by the tragedy. The lawyers wanted to calculate damages. Almost anything can be helpful to monetize your injuries, one of the lawyers told the doctors. The lawyers also detailed the formula for how theyd figure out what figure they would sue for -- but long story short, it would be huge huge huge.

The one sticking point during the lawsuit discussion was the planes pilot, who the lawyers said theyd be going after for damages. As far as the pilot is concerned, the lady lawyer said, devoid of any emotion, you need to stop thinking about him as one of you and start thinking of him as one of them. It was decidedly strange to do that, though, because the pilot had also been injured and -- as it was revealed -- was paralyzed after the accident. Another discussion focused on Derek and whether hed ever be able to do surgery again with his injured hand. At first Callie seemed to want to hedge her answer, then she emphatically said no, and then -- after a fight with Derek -- she recanted and said shed do everything she can to fix his hand. She explained why she was all over the place on Dereks hand: Because I was scared. Because I felt like I failed you. You should have pushed me harder. We havent tried everything. You shouldnt give up until we do.

NEXT: The doctors find out the lawsuit will hit closer to home than theyd expected
