Celebrity Travel : Leila Janah is a social entrepreneur and a world traveller to developing countries

There is no place where poverty has to exist best sums up Leila Janahs world view.

As founder and CEO of Samasource a non-profit microwork organization which connects people in developing countries with companies that require small computer-based jobs performed as well as Samahope, which uses crowd sourcing to fund surgeries for women and children in poor countries, Janah logs a lot of miles.

The Harvard grad and social business entrepreneur, who previously worked at the World Bank and as a management consultant, likes to travel light. Unless shes carrying medical supplies or other important cargo, Janah never even checks a bag. Its a trick she learned as a student, writing for the Lets Go travel guides, in Brazil, Borneo, the Philippines, Mozambique and Malawi.

The tech-savvy 30-year-old, who sits on a number of boards, also recently partnered with Canadian bootmaker Sorel for its Get Your Boots Dirty campaign featuring women entrepreneurs.

We caught up with the Buffalo native at her home in San Francisco.

Q: Youve been to over 80 countries; have you estimated how far youve travelled over the years?

A: Well over a million miles, I would say, (but) I tend to go, go, go and not take stock.

Q: Do you have a favourite place to visit? Is there one thats stood out?

A: Just one? There are so many I love Haiti: Port-au-Prince. Its an incredible city and people are scared to go there or think its really poor; it is quite poor but it is an incredibly rich city culturally.

You have the old French Colonial architecture and a lot of Latin influences from the Dominican Republic, which shares the island with Haiti. And the people there have been through so much; theres resilience and this sense of faith that permeates the culture there that I find really interesting.

Optimism for 2013 despite economic gloom

World travel and tourism will continue to grow next year despite the gloomy economic environment, according to leading international organisations and market researchers.

Chinese tourists remain a growth driver. Foto: iStockphoto

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) announced this week that international tourist arrivals grew by 4% to 705 million between January and August 2012 and confidently predicted that one billion international tourists will have travelled the world by the end of the year. The UNWTO expects growth of 3% to 4% for the year as a whole and currently forecasts a slight slowdown in demand for 2013 (+2% to 4%).

This growth is a very positive result in view of the global economic situation. We must remain cautious, however, as we have also observed some weaker months during the year, a trend that might return in the remainder of the year, said UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai.

Emerging economies (+5%) have clearly regained the lead as compared to advanced ones (+4%), according to the UN agency. By regions, growth was stronger in Asia and the Pacific and Africa, followed by the Americas and Europe. The Middle East continues to show signs of recovery, with particularly promising results in Egypt.

Similarly, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) also predicted that the global travel & tourism industry will see robust growth this year and grow again in 2013. The organisation forecast growth of 2.7% this year, only slightly lower than its original 2.8% prediction made at the start of this year.

David Scowsill, WTTC President & CEO, said: The latest figures from WTTC confirm the resilience of the Travel & Tourism industry around the world. Despite some specific and regional downgrades to short-term economic and industry forecasts, the longer-term prospects for Travel & Tourism remain very positive, and continue to be boosted by strong growth and rising prosperity in emerging markets. We expect the direct contribution of Travel & Tourism to global GDP to grow by an average of 4% per annum between 2011 and 2021 with North East Asia making up a growing share of the overall Travel & Tourism contribution to GDP.

German-based market researchers IPK International reported in their World Travel Monitor 2012 that global travel is likely to increase by 2.5% to 6.8 billion trips this year, with domestic travel up 2% at 5.8 billion trips and international travel increasing by 4% to top the one billion mark. For 2013, IPK sees international travel growing slightly more slowly by about 2-4%.

IPK chief Rolf Freitag said the continuing upward trend in the global travel industry is due mainly to an economic boom in the BRIC countries - Brazil, Russia, India, China and in other developing countries. Significant income growth in countries such as Russia and India and the emergence of a new middle class in almost every BRIC country has sparked a desire to travel which prevails in times of crisis, he commented.

Titan Now Officially The World’s Fastest Computer

November 12, 2012

Michael Harper for redOrbit.com Your Universe Online

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has completed some upgrades to their existing super computer, and theyve become awfully proud of it. This new supercomputer combines the power of CPUs and GPUs, improving the power of the previous Jaguar supercomputer ten fold. The result: The Titan supercomputer takes up the same footprint of about 200 refrigerators and is said to be capable of calculating 20 petaflops without breaking a sweat. When the news was released about these new upgrades last month, the ORNL was confident the Titan would be the worlds fastest supercomputer. Now, the Top 500 List of the Worlds Top Supercomputers has agreed, saying their Titan machine is indeed the fastest machine in the world.

The Titan, a Cray XK7 system with 560,640 processors and 261,632 NVIDIA K20x accelerator cores achieved just shy of the projected 20 petaflop marking, calculating 17.59 petaflops, or quadrillions of calculations per second.

Titan beat out the previous number one contender, Sequoia of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Sequoia, a supercomputer built on top of the IBM BlueGene/Q system, has now been moved to second place. During the last Top 500 tests this past June, the Sequoia used its 1,572,864 cores to churn out 16.32 petaflops. According to the Top 500 statement, Sequoia is also the first machine to house 1 million or more cores.

Elsewhere in the top 5 of the top 500 list are machines from Japan, Chicago and Germany. Fujitsus K computer came in at number 3, and is housed at the RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science (AICS) in Kobe, Japan. The BlueGene/Q system performed very well in the most recent Top 500, backing the 2nd, 4th and 5th place machines. The 4th Place BlueGene/Q system supports Mira, a supercomputer from Argonne National Laboratory outside of Chicago, Illinois. JUQUEEN at the Forschungszentrum Jlich in Germany scored number 5 and is also supported on the IBM BlueGene/Q architecture. Though JUQUEEN scored number 5 in the world, it was named the most powerful supercomputer in Europe.

A Dell PowerEdge C8220 system at the University of Texas at Austin by the name of Stampede also made the top ten list. This system uses the new Intel Xeon Phi processors, capable of working out 2.6 petaflops, much less than Titans 17.59.

According to Top500.org, Titan isnt the only computer to combine CPU and GPU to achieve its high speeds. There are now a total of 62 systems in the Top 500 list which make use of the same principal, including number 8 on the list, the Chinese system Tianhe-1A. This supercomputer uses NVIDIA GPUs. When the last Top 500 list was released 6 months ago, there were 58 systems which took the hybrid approach.

The Top 500 list also acknowledges Intel, saying 76% of the Top 500 rated supercomputers make use of their processors. The AMD Opteron is used in 12% of these supercomputers (a total of 60 systems) while IBM Power Processors are used in 10.6% of these systems.
