GW Research chosen as ‘paper of the week’ for blood coagulation discovery

Researchers at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) will be featured as a top paper in next week's issue of the Journal of Biological Chemistry. Research by Rakesh Kumar, Ph.D., Catharine Birch McCormick Endowed Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, and Beatriz Snchez-Solana, postdoctoral fellow at the department of biochemistry and molecular medicine, both at SMHS, has been selected as the journal's "Paper of the Week". The study, titled "p21-activated Kinase-1 Signaling Regulates Transcription of Tissue Factor and Tissue Factor Pathway Inhibitor," was chosen for its groundbreaking discovery of a new regulator of the blood coagulation cascade.

The research will be featured starting on Nov. 16, in Volume 287, No. 47 of the journal. The journal's editorial board members and associate editors determined the paper to be in the top two percent of manuscripts they will review in a year in significance and overall importance. About 50 to 100 papers are selected from the more than 6,600 published in the journal each year. The research will also be featured as the issue's cover image.

Blood coagulation, which many are aware of in terms of blood clotting after cuts and injuries, is a continuous process in the blood. It is a dynamic process, and there is a need to prevent and promote coagulation from time to time, for example, in the control of some diseases related to coagulation, such as cancer. As a whole, coagulation is regulated and initiated by a protein, named Tissue Factor (TF). TF works with many other proteins in a series of chain reactions in order to create coagulation. The activity of TF, a positive regulator of coagulation, is controlled by tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI), a negative regulator, creating a balanced state.

"What was not known in the field is if there was any shared regulator or shared pathway, which cannot only regulate a positive regulator, but could also regulate a negative regulator of coagulation," said Kumar. "This is what we have found."

"We discovered for the first time that PAK1 [p21-activated Kinase-1] was implicated both in the regulation of the expression of TF, as well as TFPI," said Snchez-Solana.

P21-activated Kinase-1 (PAK1) has been widely implicated in cancer. There are many cancers where the expression of TF is up-regulated and outside research to support the idea that increasing expression of TF or a deregulated coagulation could contribute to cancer progression. The discovery made by Kumar and Snchez-Solana states that PAK1 is able to induce the expression of TF, but at the same time repress the expression of TFPI, promoting a hypercoagulant state. This is important not only to coagulation, but also coagulation as implicated in many cancers and diseases. By controlling the expression or activity of PAK1, which has been shown in this study to control coagulation, it can be used as a therapy for these coagulation processes.

"Should these findings be verified in animals, our research suggests it should be possible to change the rate of coagulation or the process of coagulation outcome by interfering or effecting the PAK1 signaling," said Kumar.

CSUSB appoints new Social Science Director

Brent Hunter has been appointed director of development in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Cal State San Bernardino.

Hunter, who began his position on Nov. 1, was most recently the director of development at the School of Business Administration at University of California, Riverside.

Hunter brings a wide spectrum of experience in program development, building volunteer and community support, as well as creating recognition activities. He also has held a variety of leadership roles in business management.

The critical role that CSUSB plays in creating a positive economic future for the county of San Bernardino is very important, and Im looking forward to contributing to that role, said Hunter.

Brent brings a depth of experience in private business and nonprofit fundraising that will broaden CSUSBs philanthropic efforts to increase student scholarships, strengthen opportunities for faculty research and enhance the learning environment on campus, said Cindi Pringle, CSUSBs associate vice president of development.

I believe the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences will have a huge opportunity to grow its alumni support along with business and community support for our students and programs, said Hunter.

He earned a bachelors degree in economics with a minor in anthropology from UC Santa Barbara and a masters degree in urban institutions and systems from Claremont Graduate University.

Testosterone's 'fountain of youth'?

John Freiburger, 48, says people have noticed the difference in his energy levels since he began taking testosterone.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

(CNN) -- For thousands of years, explorers have been searching for the Fountain of Youth. Legend has it the elusive fountain contains a restorative source that brings endless vitality to those who drink from its pool.

No one knows what the source is, exactly. It's been called everything from the "water of life" to the "elixir of immortality."

These days, anti-aging specialists simply refer to it as "T."

You'd think T, or testosterone, was pure magic from its advertised results: increased energy, better mental concentration, less fat, more muscle, fewer sleepless nights and a higher sex drive. But experts say altering your body's natural hormone levels can be dangerous if not done properly.

As more FDA-approved products hit the market, the baby boomer generation is taking note. In 2011, consumers spent approximately $1.6 billion on prescription testosterone therapies, almost triple the amount spent in 2006, according to market research company IMS Health.

Dr. Harvey Bartnof is the founder of the California Longevity & Vitality Medical Institute. His practice focuses on age management medicine and hormone replacement therapies for both men and women. He says patients come to him to slow the aging process; they want to remain active and engaged as they grow older.

"We have medications that help people stay alive longer, but the quality of life declines," Bartnof says. "People would rather not go down the pathway of ... mom, dad if they don't have to."

Internationally Recognized Hair Loss Expert Dr. Alan J. Bauman was Featured Speaker at Paris Anti-Aging and Hair …

Dr. Alan J. Bauman discussed new technology and trends at the European Masters in Aesthetic & Anti-Aging Medicine conference in Paris.

Boca Raton, Florida (PRWEB) November 15, 2012

Among Baumans several presentations, FUE Mega Sessions: Pearls and Pitfalls in Achieving Maximum Graft Yield Using Minimally Invasive Hair Transplant and Harvesting Methods, and FUE Trends: The Minimally Invasive Hair Transplant Revolution, were featured as part of the EMAAs 2nd International Hair Surgery Master Course (IHSMC), hosted by renowned hair transplant surgeon Dr. Pierre Bouhanna. Along with FUE technology, Bauman, who is a board-certified hair restoration surgeon, discussed mechanisms of low-level laser therapy including the latest at-home breakthrough laser devices. Bauman was one of the first US physicians to use laser therapy as an integral part of a multi-therapy approach to treating hair loss and thinning for both male and female patients. The new LaserCap is a portable, wearable laser unit that contains 224 laser diodes to stimulate weak and thinning follicles at the cellular level and improve blood flow in order to help patients achieve thicker, fuller healthier looking hair. The Nutreve personal laser is another new cordless and rechargeable consumer device with 35 true laser diodes.

Minimally-invasive NeoGraft FUE hair transplantation and low level laser devices like LaserCap are the absolute cutting-edge of hair loss treatments and its exciting to present those options to the progressive doctors in the field, said Dr. Bauman, who is founder and medical director of the Bauman Medical Group in Boca Raton. The Paris EMAA conference was a unique opportunity to share these new treatments and successes with a global audience of colleagues. This allows us the chance to both teach and learn from each other to better help our hair loss patients, while at the same time, raise awareness about the advanced new treatments and techniques available.

View photos and a slideshow from the event.

NeoGraft FUE:

FUE is a less-invasive harvesting of hair follicles and follicular units individually; eliminating the linear or strip harvest approach. The highly delicate and technically challenging FUE procedure has been available for several years, but prior to the advent of mechanical instruments like NeoGraft, it was difficult for hair transplant surgeons to accurately and efficiently perform large minimally-invasive hair transplant sessions.

The FDA-cleared NeoGraft (also known as the S.A.F.E.R. device by Medicamat in Europe and Asia) is a dramatic advancement over previous manual FUE methods which were more time consuming and less accurate. NeoGraft/S.A.F.E.R. allows surgeons to harvest and transplant large numbers of hair follicles in considerably less time for patients and without the tell-tale linear scar. Because recovery from NeoGraft FUE is faster, more comfortable and less restrictive, most people are back to their regular routines - including athletic workouts - within just a few days.

FUE is an extremely effective surgical option for patients that allows for a quicker, more comfortable recovery, less post-op activity restrictions, as well as avoiding the tell-tale linear scar associated with traditional linear strip-harvest hair transplants, explained Bauman. As we showed in our lectures, it takes meticulous preparation and teamwork to transplant more than 3,000 follicular units in a Mega-FUE transplant session.

According to ISHRS statistics, FUE surgeries have risen in demand dramatically over the past several years around the world and large Mega-FUE sessions will likely be the next trend.
