5 Italian Islands the de Blasios Should Have Picked Over Pricey Capri

Under-the-radar spots for summering.

The mayor shouldnt have gone to Capri this summer.

Thats not just because it made de Blasio absent during one of the biggest challenges of his young tenure so far the death of Eric Garner its because Capri, while beautiful, is also expensive, touristic, and, worst of all, as glitzy as you can get. The mere name smacks of wealth and privilege bad PR, even at the best of times for a mayor who ran on an anti-Bloombergian platform of equity. Italy boasts plenty of other islands that would have been a better bet for the mayor. Yes, the photos of their spectacular scenery and crystal-clear water would still have made New Yorkers jealous, but most of his constituents likely wouldnt recognize their names. Here are five places I would have sent de Blasio instead. (Mr. Mayor, next time, call me!)

IschiaThe largest island in the Bay of Naples, Ischia is like Capris slightly less glamorous sister. Like the other islands on this list, Ischia is hardly unknown to Italians. (Or to Germans. As with most of the worlds seemingly off-the-beaten-path spots, the Germans are already there.) It is, however, off the radar for much of the international jet-set crowd. You come here for the stunning scenery and the beaches, not the Michelin-starred restaurants and "Page Six"clubs. Ischias under-the-radar feel is surprising, though, given its beauty. Picture a place thats lush, green, and dotted with wildflowers. Top it with a ridiculously large, labyrinthine castle (the Castello Aragonese, with origins that date back to the ancient Greek fortress of 474 B.C.E.). Pop in thermal pools, world-famous gardens, and whitewashed resort towns where vacationing Italians stroll on evening passeggiate or nibble on the flaky sfogliatelle pastries of nearby Naples, or Ischias particular specialty, cooked coniglio (that would be rabbit).

ProcidaAt one and a half square miles, Procida (PRO-chee-dah), located just 40 minutes from Naples by hydrofoil, is the smallest island in the Bay of Naples. Its also, in some ways, the loveliest. Because its been a settlement for fishermen for so long (today, some 11,000 residents live here year-round), it doesnt have as much lush, open space as Ischia or Capri. What Procida lacks in greenery, however, it makes up for with its local legends, gorgeous views, and pastel villages all of which feel like working fishermens villages, not resort towns, since, of course, thats what they are. Old men gather in the little piazzas here at dusk for a smoke and a chat; local kids (and day-tripping families from nearby Naples) splash in the water. No surprise that the island was used as the setting for the film Il Postino.

Dont miss a visit to Terra Murata, the citadel-village that was walled off to protect against ongoing incursions by Saracenic pirates in the 16th century, and its Benedictine abbey. This abbey happens to be the site of a local miracle: When Procida was besieged by pirates on May 8, 1535, an image of St. Michael the Archangel was said to appear in the sky, sword drawn. The pirates fled, an event celebrated with a procession every year on May 8. The weeks leading up to Good Friday, meanwhile, see locals working hard on their larger-than-life, handmade floats of wood, cloth, and papier-mch, each showing a different scene from the Passion; called the misteri (mysteries), these floats are destroyed when the procession ends.

PonzaWhen Romes wealthy (or their friends) need a weekend escape and dont have time to get to Capri, this is where they come its a good 70 miles further north (and closer to Rome) than the Bay of Naples. Not that you have to be a millionaire to get here. Plenty of ferries run from Formia or Anzio (each an hours train ride south of Rome) directly to the island, with the fastest taking 70 minutes, and accommodation as with all of these islands includes many more apartment and house rentals and B&Bs than full-blown, five-star resorts.

Measuring less than three square miles (compare that to Ischias whopping 18), Ponza is tiny. But dont let its size fool you. This is an island where myth dwarfs the actual place: Legend has it that Odysseus was seduced and kept here by the sorceress Circe, whose cliffside cave you can still see, while the island itself got its name from Pontius Pilate, whose family was said to have a house here.

Ponza today is a lovely, tranquil island scattered with a handful of pastel-colored villages, its edges bordered with dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and, of course, that bright-blue water. Renting a little outboard boat and toodling around the coastline is popular, especially since many of the tiny beaches arent particularly accessible with even a tiny Smart unless you dont mind parking at the top and taking steep, winding paths down (and then back up) the 500 foot cliffs to the sea.

PanareaPanarea is the Capri of the Aeolian islands, an arc of eight isles just to the north of Messina; on a map, they look like the pebbles being kicked up by the boot as it tries to give Sicily the old heave-ho. At just over one square mile and home to fewer than 300 residents year-round, Panarea is super-tiny. Its also super-chic; if de Blasio were hoping for an exclusive feel that wouldnt come with all the bad PR of a name as recognizable as Capri, this would be the spot. Its handful of exclusive clubs have given it the reputation of being the top Aeolian island for nightlife, so it's no surprise that Panarea swells with visitors the vast majority of them well-heeled Italians come July and, especially, August. But dont worry, Mr. Mayor: The tiny, waterfront village, with its couple of clubs, is so small, even all of the visitors start to recognize one another after a single night; if Chiara and Dante insist on going out on the town, Panarea is as safe as it gets.

South West Health looking for new nurse practitioner for Islands

Jonathan Riley

The Islands Health Care Centre RILEY FILE.

South West Health is looking for the next nurse practitioner for the Islands Health Care Centre in Freeport.

The district health authority advertised for a full-time nurse practitioner to provide primary health care with a posting that closed Friday, Aug. 29.

South West Health spokesperson Fraser Mooney confirmed today that Melissa Stoddart, the current nurse practitioner at the Islands health centre has accepted a position elsewhere in Nova Scotia.

South West Health would like thank Melissa for her service, and join her friends, colleagues and patients in extending best wishes in this new chapter in her career, said Mooney by email on Tuesday, Sept. 2. We understand this will cause some concern in the community, and we apologize for any inconvenience.

But we are now actively recruiting for a nurse practitioner to serve the communities of Long and Brier Islands.

Mooney said there has been some interest in the position.

We really cant say much at this point as it is a Human Resources issue and we are still in the recruitment process, he said. There has been some interest in the position. Even though the closing date was last week, the recruiting will effectively continue until a permanent replacement can be found.

Facebook posts on the Islanders group say Stoddarts last day at the Islands health centre will be towards the end of October.

Ebola ravages health care in Sierra Leone capital

As West Africa struggles to contain the biggest ever outbreak of Ebola, some experts say an unusual but simple treatment might help: the blood of survivors. The evidence is mixed for using infection-fighting antibodies from survivors' blood for Ebola, but without any licensed drugs or vaccines for the deadly disease, some say it's worth a shot. FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (AP) Health care in Sierra Leone's capital city has "crumbled" because the deadly Ebola outbreak has made people too terrified to go to hospitals and some doctors wary of treating those who do show up, a physician said Friday.

Speaking at the launch of a public education program in Freetown, Kwame O'Neil said patients suffering from all kinds of ailments are dying for lack of treatment because of these fears. Ebola is a deadly disease for which there is no known cure and which is spread through contact with bodily fluids.

One young girl died of appendicitis when, after showing up at a hospital, a doctor there denied he was a doctor and refused to treat her, O'Neil said.

O'Neil also said his own aunt died after suffering a stroke and being left untreated at a hospital for two days.

Sierra Leone has recorded 1,107 confirmed cases and 430 confirmed deaths of Ebola, according to the World Health Organization. But the country's health ministry says most are outside the capital. The outbreak has killed about 1,900 people across five countries, according to WHO.

By contrast, the capital of neighboring Liberia has been the focal point of the outbreak there.

On Friday, Liberian officials confirmed that a police barracks in central Monrovia was shut down after the wife of one of the officers died of Ebola. Information Minister Lewis Brown said the officers decided to "self-quarantine." About 35 officers live in the barracks with their families, said Abraham Kromah, deputy director of the national police force.

Liberian Christian leaders planned to convene about 100 "prayer warriors" at a historic church in the capital to drive out Ebola, said Rev. Kortu Brown, vice president of the Liberian Council of Churches.

Obamacare Effect Linked to Lower Medical Cost Estimates

Estimates of U.S. health-care spending for the next five years have been lowered by two federal agencies, and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is getting much of the credit.

U.S. health spending in 2019 will be $4 trillion, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said this week, or $500 billion less than the agency projected in 2010 when President Barack Obamas health-care overhaul became law. That announcement followed by a week a report from the Congressional Budget Office lowering its five-year cost estimates.

Obamacare has been criticized by Republicans as costly and unsustainable. Now, four years after its arrival, the laws mandated program cuts and the medical practices it encourages -- limiting unneeded procedures, and keeping people out of the hospital longer -- are cited by economists as key ingredients in trimming the nations medical bill. While the recession has had an influence on the cost slowdown, it doesnt explain it all, according to policy analysts and the CBO.

When the CBO goes back and revises their baseline, historically theyve adjusted upwards, said Tricia Neuman, director of the Kaiser Family Foundations Program on Medicare Policy. So the fact that theres been year-after-year downward adjustments is fairly remarkable since they occurred after the ACA was signed into law.

While total health spending will still rise over the long run, the slower-than-expected growth predicted within the next five years has sharply improved the nations fiscal outlook, Jason Furman, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, wrote on the White House blog.

National health-care expenditures will be 18 percent of the gross domestic product in 2019, according to the CMS report. Thats 1.5 percentage points lower than the agencys projection in 2010 for the same year.

Ohio State Gene Testing Could Unlock Key To Curing Cancer

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Cancer research goes beyond medicine at The Ohio State University's James Cancer Hospital.

Doctors conduct genetic testing at Ohio State, unraveling the genetic code of a specific cancer.

"The idea is can we identify what these cancers are, what's wrong with these cancers, and what's the right therapy for them?" said Dr. Sameek Roychowdhury.

Roychowdhury leads the precision cancer medicine program at the James. The focus of the program is just that precision.

Doctors have been analyzing tumors for years, but now it's so specific down to the genetic mutation.

"So if we saw 100 patients with breast cancer, we could literally find 100 different types of breast cancer," Roychowdhury said.

Getting to the genetic heart of the cancer, knowing what drives it and makes it grow and spread, is the key to finding the cancer, stopping it, and saving lives.

"It's going to be much more focusedon the exact gene that's disruptive," Roychowdhury said.

For example, Jared Gordon was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer at age 51.

The father of three was told that he had six months to live.

New Rochelle, NY, September 4, 2014--Imagine a non-rigid, shape-changing robot that walks on four "legs," can operate without the constraints of a tether, and can function in a snowstorm, move through puddles of water, and even withstand limited exposure to flames. Harvard advanced materials chemist George Whitesides, PhD and colleagues describe the mobile, autonomous robot they have created in Soft Robotics, a peer-reviewed journal from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers. The article is available on the Soft Robotics website.

In "A Resilient, Untethered Soft Robot," Michael Tolley, PhD and a multidisciplinary team of coauthors from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering, and Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, at Harvard University (Cambridge, MA), and the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University (Ithaca, NY), detail the innovative composite materials, design features, and fabrication methods they used to develop a soft robot capable of functioning for several hours using a battery pack or for longer periods with a light-weight electrical tether, and able to carry payloads of up to 8 kg.

"This paper marks the emergence of soft robot technology from the research lab into the real world," says Editor-in-Chief Barry A. Trimmer, PhD, who directs the Neuromechanics and Biomimetic Devices Laboratory at Tufts University (Medford, MA).
