When Alyson McGregor visited a simulation laboratory in a medical school, she was shocked to discover that the only female body in the room was actually a male simulation model in a blond wig. She had just given a lecture on sex and gender in medicine, so perhaps she should have been braced for it. Students, she says in the foreword to her book, are trained to look for male patterns of disease, trauma and pain on male bodies, on the assumption that men and women are biologically identical.
