Liberal MP who quit over massive gambling debts charged by RCMP over ‘millions’ in personal loans while in office – National Post

Mr. Grewal adamantly denies these allegations as he has done steadfastly since 2018

Grewal, whose full name is Rajvinder Singh Grewal, was a lawyer before entering electoral politics, having graduated from York Universitys Osgoode Hall Law School. He returned to a private law practice after leaving Parliament, according to his LinkedIn resume.

The Law Society Tribunal alleges he used false pretences to obtain or borrow money from six different people in 2016 and 2017, while he was a Liberal MP.

His first loan or payment, for $50,000, was on June 27, 2016. An amount of $250,000 was received on May 28, 2017, $200,000 two weeks later on June 12, and another $250,000 on June 20.

The last two amounts from individuals came at the end of 2017: $100,000 on Dec. 4 and $250,000 on Dec. 19, according to tribunal documents.

He is further accused of defrauding a corporation, which was a legal client, by using false pretences to borrow $200,000 in February 2018, the tribunal records say. He further faces discipline for allegedly misleading his corporate client about the purpose of the loan.

The documents do not identify those providing the money. The Law Society allegations were filed Aug. 10.

This matter is on-going. Pending the outcome of proceedings, Mr. Grewal is able to practise as a lawyer licensee of the Law Society. There is nothing to report regarding bankruptcy, practice restrictions or undertakings, the Law Society said in a written statement.

The RCMPs Ottawa-based Sensitive and International Investigations unit laid the criminal charges. The unit handles domestic corruption and political investigations.

A mandate of the unit is to investigate allegations of financial crimes such as fraud, corruption and procurement against senior federal employees as well as allegations of fraud, financial crimes, corruption and breach of trust against elected officials, senators or executives of the federal government.

Grewal is scheduled to appear in court in Ottawa on Oct. 6.
