Workington Comets have signed Matthew Wethers after Michael Palm Toft was forced to quit the club this week.

The Dane, who was Comets fifth confirmed signing in November, lost one of his main sponsors and as a result is unable to ride in the UK this season. He told Comets management on Wednesday night, who immediately informed the British Speedway Promoters Association of their situation.

Palm Toft hinted at the move on social media on Wednesday night when he posted: Hard decision. But need to get things sorted! Im sorry.

Australian Matthew Wethers, 29, has signed on loan from Edinburgh Monarchs on a 5.50 average and, pending the green light from the BSPA, is due to be confirmed today as Palm Tofts replacement.

Laura Morgan, owner, said: He does seem really upset about letting us down and due to it being late in the day we were straight to panic stations.

The BSPA has been informed and we have been lucky enough to sign Matthew Wethers on loan from Edinburgh. We are just awaiting confirmation from them.

I have known Matthew for a lot of years and he was actually in consideration when we were first team-building but we went for Michael.

Obviously its disappointing that before we have even turned a wheel we are having to find another rider. It always seems to happen at Workington.
