With 30 seconds of airtime costing around $4.5 million during the Super Bowl, and over 100 million viewers to reach, companies want to spend their advertising dollars wisely. But they also need to take risks, doing something cute, shocking or memorable that will have people talking about the commercial around the water cooler on Monday. The commercials during the game either inspire awe, like mini-movies or give people the opportunity for a bathroom break.

Ads for the 2015 game on Sunday night drew notice for their overall somber toneand for some head-scratching miscues. The Wall Street Journal is currently running an online poll where you can vote for your own picks for best and worst Super Bowl ads.

This year, there were some returning stars Budweiser rolled out its cute, horse-loving puppy for the second consecutive year and some breakout stars: smartphone recharger Mophie ran a bleak, end-of-the-world ad to show how some people feel when their phone runs out of batteries, and Always feminine products had a #runlikeagirl ad that aims to debunk negative stereotypes and empower young girls.

Not everyone likes the commercials enough to watch the entire game. Im the guy who left a friends Super Bowl Party during the first part of the half-time show, says Jonathan Bernstein, president of public relations consultancy Bernstein Crisis Management. That said, most of the ads are available online before (and after) the game.

Madden NFL 15s simulation of Super Bowl XLIX proved to be strikingly accurate.

In the Madden simulation, the Seahawks led 24-14 in the third quarter following a Marshawn Lynch touchdown run, but the Patriots dug deep and came storming back to win 28-24.

Sound familiar?

In the real Super Bowl, the Seahawks also led 24-14 in the third quarter, albeit after a Doug Baldwin touchdown catch. But the Patriots still came back to win 28-24 after a Julian Edelman touchdown catch.

Computer Tom Brady threw for all four of the Patriots touchdowns in the simulation and was awarded his third Super Bowl MVP award. In the real game, Brady also threw four touchdowns.

If you've seen this year's list of Super Bowl advertisers, you might be questioning exactly what Wix is.

But while tech companies like Wix aren't quite household names, they've been betting big on Super Bowl ads for decades.

Most famously, Apple (AAPL, Tech30) did so with its 1984 Super Bowl Ad.

"It was an insane success," said Kelly O'Keefe, professor of brand strategy at the Virginia Commonwealth University Brand Center.

In those days, Apple was hardly the Goliath it is today. The company had gone public just four years prior. And its Super Bowl ad introduced the Macintosh, its first mass-market personal computer, to the world.

Directed by Ridley Scott, Apple's ad made the American event one of the year's biggest advertising stages and led to increased production values across the board.

Wix is hoping to take a play from Apple's book -- and make a name for its brand with the 100 million people watching the Super Bowl.

Founded in Israel in 2006, Wix lets businesses and individuals build their own websites -- no coding experience required. It has 900 employees, 58 million registered users (80% of whom are small business owners) and offers its services in 11 languages.

For one day a year, weak computer nerds like me pretend to be men by watching NFL football and eating junk food. Truth be told, I enjoy watching American football, but for the most part, I am happier watching Big Bang Theory or The Bachelor with a nice cup of herbal tea!

Don't worry, if you are a computer nerd that isn't interested in watching sports, you can at least use technology to enhance the Super Bowl experience. How? With Twitter, of course! This will enable you to at least look like you know what you are talking about when the other guys are discussing the game.

Even if you aren't a sports fan, it has been impossible to escape the "DeflateGate" controversy in the mainstream news.

With that said, it can be a very painful and emasculating feeling, when you don't fit the image of the typical man that society and the media portray. Believe me, you can still be a "real man" while not enjoying football, UFC fighting and other barbaric things. However, from a shared experience perspective, I urge you to watch the Super Bowl. 50,000 computer simulations say Seahawks will beat Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX

The most likely score of Super Bowl XLIX, according to 50,000 computer simulations of Sundays big game? Seattle Seahawks 24, New England Patriots 20.

Though the Patriots are still favored in Las Vegas by 1 point, the Predictalator a computer system that analyzed myriad statistics and thereby simulated the Super Bowl 50,000 times is expecting Seattle to win its second consecutive NFL championship. The Seahawks won in 57.3 percent of simulations.

While their journeys may sound similar and the matchup looks like a classic, there is one major difference between these two teams that ultimately leads us to our prediction, wrote Paul Bessire of PredictionMachine.com, the Seattle Seahawks are, simply, the team more capable of dominating.

This is very important in a winner-take-all battle between two of the leagues best because it means that Seattle is both more poised to gain a lead that it can preserve and battle back to win in a comeback bid if it happens to get behind (as we saw in the NFC Championship Game). Sports and direct competition are often about utilizing ones strengths to exploit an opponents weaknesses.

One interesting note: The Predictalator assumed right tackle Justin Britt would not play due to injury. With second-year offensive lineman Alvin Bailey starting in Britts place in the NFC Championship game, Seattle struggled to adequately protect Russell Wilson in the pocket. But Britt, who markedly improved down the stretch of the regular season, said Tuesday he will play in Super Bowl XLIX.

Six Ads That Redefined The Super Bowl Ad

People like to throw around superlatives in discussing Super Bowl ads -- best, worst, funniest, most moving. But what about most important?

How can a Super Bowl ad be important? The six listed below helped change how advertisers, brands and Americans everywhere conceived of what an ad during the Super Bowl could be used to do.

Apple -- "1984" (1984) It was a big year for Apple. 1984 was the year the company launched the Macintosh personal computer, and it was the moment when the company decided to make the most expensive ad in its history. That spot is really what launched the Super Bowl of advertising, said Keith Quesenberry, a former creative director and current lecturer at Johns Hopkins University. Before that, there was a Super Bowl going on, and just regular ads ran during the Super Bowl.

Because of the sizable audience, he added, Apple decided to turn it into a special moment. The decision was not unanimous. Members of Apples board were very hesitant to spend so much money -- the ad had a $900,000 budget -- which included a hefty fee for Ridley Scott, the director behind "Alien" and "Blade Runner."

And, like so many Super Bowl ads, even though 1984 attracted a mountain of attention, it may not have helped move many units.

Chrysler -- "Imported From Detroit" (2010) Brands are not in the habit of buying Super Bowl airtime in the midst of historically bad years. But after being rescued from bankruptcy in 2008 and well on the way to its worst sales year since 1962, Chrysler needed to make a big bet. Thats why it laid out nearly $9 million for the 2-minute spot that was supposed to redefine not just the automakers brand, but the once-noble principle of buying American.

It took the perception of cars and flipped it on its head, Quesenberry said. This really had this big turning point.

A year later, the bet looked like it paid dividends: Chryslers sales rebounded 17 percent.

E*Trade -- We just wasted 2 million bucks This may sound crazy, but there was once an era when the streets of Silicon Valley were flush with venture capitalists cash, teeming with companies built on questionable business models throwing said cash around. On the one hand, this 1999 spot is emblematic of that time -- It goes back to the excess of the dot-com period, Qusenberry said -- but on the other, it was the first Super Bowl ad to explicitly acknowledge both its stakes and the place Super Bowl ads occupy in the American cultural imagination.

Plus, the ad gets bonus points for taking the Super Bowl ads chief talking point and turning it into a punchline.

The commercial tie-ins to major sporting events are more important -- and visible -- than ever and the NFLs Super Bowl may be the biggest man on campus.

Although its too late to apply for this years business connect program, heres a list of products and services that it includes:

Small business owners and local communities should steal this page out of the NFL playbook. While few cities will ever host a Super Bowl, there are all kinds of major yearly sporting events, such as tournaments and races. If there is one near you, see if they have an outreach program to local small businesses. If not, have your chamber of commerce and other business organizations, lobby the promoters to get something going.

Of course, when these kinds of events come to your town, there are many ways you can use them as tie-ins to sales and marketing campaigns. I will note, however, that if you dont want the NFL to come down on you like a 350-pound lineman, you need to steer clear of using the term Super Bowl for commercial purposes. They are very protective of that trademarked name and in that way they are far from alone in the world of big-money sports. Apparently using the phrase Super Sunday is okay and your customers will know what youre talking about.

So, get creative, get organized and find ways that big events can kickoff major sales in your small business.

Artificial intelligence is helping astronomers predict deadly solar flares that have the potential to cause havoc on Earth.

US researchers say their super computer can provide advance warning of solar eruptions, which can release energy equivalent to 100 billion atomic bombs.

The flares arise from twisted magnetic fields that occur all over the sun's surface, and they increase in frequency every 11 years - a cycle that is now at its maximum.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Shares of Super Micro Computer (SMCI - Get Report) were gaining 1.2% to $38.20 after-hours Tuesday after the server maker beat analysts' estimates for earnings and revenue in the fiscal second quarter.

Supermicro reported earnings of 65 cents a share for the second quarter, above analysts' estimates of 47 cents a share. Revenue increased 41.1% year over year to $503 million in the quarter, while analysts' expected revenue of $467.86 million.

Looking to the third quarter Supermicro expects earnings of 46 cents a share to 52 cents and revenue of $450 million to $500 million. Analysts expect earnings of 43 cents a share and revenue of $457.77 million for the quarter.
