Computer-navigated knee replacement facility launched

An innovation in joint replacement surgery, computer navigated total knee replacement, has been introduced at Sai Bhaskar Super Specialty Hospitals, Arundelpet.

German joint replacement surgeon Heiko Groichen, who launched the new facility here, said that computer navigated knee replacement would have a 100 per cent precision and accuracy.

With the help of computer, orthopaedic surgeons would be able to determine specific blocks and implant the artificial joints in the knees.

Even as the rate of people preferring joint knee replacement is growing up, Dr. Heiko said that people could still avoid knee pain if they make a consistent effort to lose weight, eat the right nutritional food, opt for physiotherapy whenever needed and follow the advice of doctor.

Obesity and visceral fat

Knee pains are increasingly becoming related to obesity and visceral fat and in European countries, increasing number of men and women above 45 years are opting for hip surgery while in India knee replacement is still a neglected area.

Managing director and orthopaedic surgeon Busireddy Narendra Reddy said that the new computer navigated total knee replacement was the first-of-its kind facility in the State.

Former HoD, Department of Orthopaedics, GGH, Rammohan Rao, said that he had his knees operated upon and added that the recovery was quite good.

Super-sneaky malware found in companies worldwide

That's according to a report Monday by Internet security company Kaspersky, which described a hacking campaign "that exceeds anything we have ever seen before." The mysterious group, which researchers nicknamed "the Equation group," uses malware that's unusually quiet, complex and powerful.

And in some cases, it planted spyware on computers' firmware, the programming that lives permanently on hardware. It's an unheard-of move that means the malware can avoid detection by antivirus software. Reinstalling a computer's operating system or reformatting the hard disk won't even fix the problem.

If you've got this, you might as well throw your computer away.

What's even more interesting is that Kaspersky's researchers say that the Equation group uses a hacking tool called "GROK." That's a tool used exclusively by the NSA's elite cyber-warfare unit, Tailored Access Operations, according to classified NSA documents released by former contractor Edward Snowden last year.

Kaspersky says the Equation group also appears to have ties to Stuxnet, the computer worm that sabotaged Iran's nuclear enrichment program in 2010 and was later revealed to be a joint U.S.-Israeli project.

The NSA declined to comment specifically on the Kaspersky report. But the agency noted that its efforts are focused on foiling terrorist plots from al-Qaeda and ISIS, stemming the flow of weapons of mass destruction and blocking aggression from foreign rivals.

"The U.S. government calls on our intelligence agencies to protect the United States, its citizens, and its allies," NSA said in a statement to CNN.

The Kaspersky report is the latest to depict a world engaged in constant cyber espionage. In the past, security firms have noted how Chinese hacker spies take business plans from power plants. Russian hackers break into oil and gas companies.

Kaspersky research director Costin Raiu said the Equation group hacked into hospitals in China; banks and aerospace companies in Iran; energy companies and government offices in Pakistan; and universities, military facilities and rocket science research institutions in Russia.

The attacked Iran the most, researchers said.

Raspberry Pi sales surpass 5 million — now most successful UK computer manufacturer ever

Its fair to say Raspberry Pi, the super-affordable ARM GNU/Linux computer, has been a massive success. Originally envisaged as a way to get kids coding again as they did in the 1980s and 1990s, the device has found a massive fan base outside of the education system, and has been selling in impressive quantities since its launch in 2012.

The British success story sold more than a million units in its first year, but since then the pace has picked up, and the Raspberry Pi Foundation has just tweeted some staggering news -- it has now sold more than 5 million Raspberry Pis worldwide.

Thats impressive on its own, but its worth pointing out, as a follow-up tweet does, that means that the Raspberry Pi Foundation is now the biggest selling UK computer manufacturer ever -- dwarfing iconic British brands like Sinclair Research -- and with the launch of the new Raspberry Pi 2 that growth is unlikely to show any signs of abating.

In fact, theres a good chance a large portion of the existing Pi owners will be upgrading to the new model (as my colleague Brian Fagioli did). Few people will quibble over spending $35 to get a new Pi thats six times faster than the original, especially as it will be able to run Windows 10.

Perhaps most impressively, the majority of the sales have occurred in the past year, as the company only hit the two million milestone in November 2013.

L-CSC Emerges as the Most Energy-Efficient Supercomputer in the World

New Orleans, LA, USA; November 20, 2014 -- A new supercomputer, L-CSC from the GSI Helmholtz Center, emerged as the most energy-efficient (or greenest) supercomputer in the world, according to the 16th edition of the twice-yearly Green500 list. The L-CSC cluster was the first and only supercomputer on the list to surpass 5 gigaflops/watt (billions of operations per second per watt). Like so many of the most energy-efficient supercomputers in the world over the past few years, L-CSC is a heterogeneous supercomputer that is powered by GPU accelerators, namely AMD FirePro S9150 GPUs. It marks the first time that a supercomputer using AMD GPUs has held the top spot.

In fact, the top three slots of the Green500 were powered by three different accelerators with number one, L-CSC, being powered by AMD FirePro S9150 GPUs; number two, Suiren, powered by PEZY-SC many-core accelerators; and number three, TSUBAME-KFC, powered by NVIDIA K20x GPUs. Beyond these top three, the next 20 supercomputers were also accelerator-based.

L-CSC achieved the first position on the November 2014 Green500 List with an impressive 5.27 gigaflops per watt. This system used Intel Ivy Bridge CPUs, AMD FirePro GPUs, and an energy-efficient software design to achieve this feat. TSUBAME-KFC, which was number one over the previous two editions of the Green500, came in third in this edition of the Green500. TSUBAME-KFC was the first supercomputer to have broken the 4 gigaflops/watt barrier. Finally, Suiren, a supercomputer from the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization/KEK in Japan, occupied the second spot between L-CSC and TSUBAME-KFC at 4.95 gigaflops per watt. Like L-CSC and TSUBAME-KFC, Suiren used Intel Ivy Bridge CPUs, but coupled them with many-core accelerators from PEZY-SC. These many-core accelerators consist of 1,024 independent processor cores.

Database searching is integrated with access to a wide variety of analysis and modeling tools, all within a point and click interface that eliminates file format compatibility problems.

Suggested Web Browser: the Biology Workbench was originally developed for Netscape Communicator or Navigator, up through version 4.7x. Structure Viewing: PDB structures can be viewed for PDBFinder records that are returned from a database search. One way to do this is to use the Rasmol program. Super confident students will hit it out of the PARCC

An audience of district parents at Haskell Elementary School on Feb. 4 listened as technology teacher Ryan Evans showed them how students taking the PARCC test this spring will be able to move through computer screens to record their answers.

Wanaque Superintendent Donna Cardiello is confident that her administration and staff have adequately prepared the district for the statewide roll out of the PARCC test (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) this spring.

"We are absolutely ready," Cardiello told an audience of approximately 100 parents attending an informational meeting in the Haskell School gym on Wednesday night, Feb. 4. She recognized, however, that many parents have questions and concerns about the new computer-based assessments, which have replaced the annual NJ ASK (Assessment of Skills and Knowledge) for math and language arts for grades three through 11.

"It's the unknown of a new test," she said. "As adults, that may be frightening to us, but your children will find working on the computer engaging and motivating to them to pay closer attention. It's what they do."

With the help of two short videos and a visual presentation, Cardiello and several of her prominent staff members explained how the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), adopted by New Jersey in 2010, created the need for the PARCC test.

Lynda D'Angiolillo, director of curriculum and instruction, said that the CCSS has provided teachers and schools with a baseline for the skills that should be taught and mastered at specific grade levels.

A key shift in language arts standards has students reading complex texts earlier and thinking critically about what they've read.

In math, the CCSS places greater focus on fewer topics, linking mastery of specific functions with certain grades. It's no longer enough to be able to add, subtract, or multiply; students should also display a "deeper understanding of the concepts," D'Angiolillo said.

Obsidian plans to establish super-computer business in India

Singapore, Feb 5:

Canada-based Obsidian Strategics is in discussions with technology companies to establish a super-computer business network in Asian markets, including India.

There are discussions underway with suitable groups that have the capabilities and technologies, said Bill Halina, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Obsidian Strategics.

As our company begins to grow in markets such as India, China and Australia, we see opportunities to manufacture wherever our product is being used, Halina told PTI.

Obsidian, which manufacturers its hardware and software in the US and Canada, has super computer-based technology to move data faster than anyone else.

We work with contract manufacturers and want to make sure the quality of the manufacturing is to our satisfaction, Halina said.

We will help bring jobs to a jurisdiction with the local economy that is in place and helping them to grow, he stressed.

We are also in the early days of exploring other markets, added Dr David Southwell, the groups Chief Visionary Officer.

The company prefers joint venture-based partnerships for operating in multiple markets, said at the recently held technology conference, EmTech Singapore.

Obsidian used its supercomputer, infiniband technology, on a trial basis on Tata Communications Trans-Pacific Subsea Cable from the US to Australia late last year.
