Summernats car festival coming to Alice Springs as Red CentreNATS

Petrol-heads are on notice. Alice Springs wants you.

The Northern Territory government has promised to make Alice Springs a paradise for car lovers after announcing Canberra's popular Summernats hot rod festival will be heading to the Red Centre.

Eight months after announcing the NT was chasing the event, Chief Minister Adam Giles said the organisers of Summernats had agreed to bring the event to Alice Springs.

"Red CentreNATS will be a rev heads paradise an annual auto festival showcasing the very best in street machines, elite show cars, hot rods, classics, exotics and supercars," a statement from Mr Giles' office said.

"I am thrilled to announce the organisers of Canberras famous Summernats have agreed to bring their hugely popular brand of high-octane fun to Central Australia from next year."

The annual Canberra Summernats festival sees up to 1,500 street machines descend on the city.

Although critics have said it is too noisy, anti-social and sexist, more than 85,000 people attend Summernats in Canberra, with millions of dollars pumped into the local economy.

Summernats co-owner Andy Lopez said he wanted the Red CentreNATS to be a "must attend" event for car lovers.

"The Red CentreNATS will be a fantastic event for motoring enthusiasts and the Alice Springs community alike, and over the years it will become one of Australia's favourite horsepower parties," Mr Lopez said in a statement.

Red CentreNATS is due to be held from September 3 - 6 next year.

Thirty-seven Municipalities to Improve Traffic Safety with Red Light Enforcement Funds

(From PennDOT)

PennDOT today announced that nearly $6.6 million in Automated Red Light Enforcement (ARLE) funding will be distributed to 37 municipalities statewide to fund 41 safety projects.

Under state law, fines from red light violations at 28 intersections in Philadelphia supply the grant funding. Pennsylvanias ARLE program aims to improve safety at signalized intersections by providing automated enforcement at locations where data shows red-light running has been an issue.

The law specifies that projects improving safety, enhancing mobility and reducing congestion can be considered for funding. Municipalities submitted more than 226 applications, totaling approximately $36.6 million.

Projects were selected by an eight-member committee based on criteria such as benefits and effectiveness, cost, local and regional impact, and cost sharing.

This investment brings the total dollars awarded through the ARLE funding program since 2010 to $39.8 million, funding 275 safety projects.

Red Dirt Diaries: Classic Car Lovers Gather Once A Month In OKC

OKLAHOMA CITY -

Car lovers converged in Oklahoma City. A simple idea to show off some sparkling rides turned into a can't miss event for thousands in the metro. At day break, the caravan of chrome arrived.

Coffee and Cars revved up featuring cars like a 1956 Thunderbird, a 1955 Chevy Business Coup and a 1976 Chevrolet Corvette.

The first Saturday of every month folks get an up-close look at American muscle, European refinement and classic cool.

Samara started Coffee and Cars three years ago.

Our first time when he first started, we probably has 100 cars. Now we have 600 cars and it wraps around the Northpark Mall, said Terrill.

The passion is seen, heard and understood with each story.

News 9 met two young gear heads at the event, Jacob Townsend and Drake Taylor.

They are still learning all the details. Their knowledge can seem impressive, if not a little annoying. Just ask dad.

But with that many cherry rides, it wasn't hard not get a little delusional.

Interview: Toby Jeg Reflects On Ten Years Of Red Scare Industries

"If you want to make this interview really short, you can just tell people that owning a label is all about schlepping boxes to the post office," Red Scare Industries founder Toby Jeg jokes over the phone to Chicagoist, days before he heads overseas as tour manager for recently reinvigorated Chicago punks The Lawrence Arms.

You wouldn't know it from his persistent sarcasm and hilarious wisecracks but Jeg is at the helm of one of Chicago's best loved punk rock record labels. Red Scare ushered in its tenth anniversary this year with a 17-song artist compilation (which included the first new song from Alkaline Trio/The Lawrence Arms supergroup The Falcon in eight years).

The celebration continues this weekend with a stacked show Saturday at the Metro featuring Red Scare bands old and new like Teenage Bottlerocket, Masked Intruder, The Methadones, The Lillingtons, The Falcon and more. Acoustic sets from Nothington and Brendan Kelly at the Gingerman Tavern bookend the weekend. You can find tickets and a full schedule of the festivities, here.

CHICAGOIST: It's actually hard to believe Red Scare is only ten years old. It feels like it's been around for much longer just because of its imprint in the punk scene.

TOBY JEG: That's interesting because most people feel it's the opposite. Like, "Holy shit, it's been ten years?!" From my perspective, somebody who schleps a lot of boxes and has to deal with un-rock and roll things like production deadlines, it also feels like longer than ten years. [laughs] I'm right there with you.

C: Well, I meant it in a good way.

TOBY JEG: No, I get you. It's such a legacy. I'm with you there.

C: Remind me how long you've been based in Chicago because you started Red Scare on the West Coast, right?

TOBY JEG: Yeah, I started the label when I was still working at Fat Wreck Chords in San Francisco. I moved here in early 2007. And Chicago has been so awesome. People show up to shows, the bands are great and everyone is supportive. People always ask, why move from San Francisco to Chicago? And if you made that move, you would know. It's just a wonderful, vibrant music community.

C: It seemed like there was a bit of a lull in the Chicago punk scene and now it seems like I'm hearing about way more local bands and shows than I did five years ago.

Red Bull ahead of the US Grand Prix

Daniel Ricciardo: "Hand on heart, this is probably the date on the calendar I look forward to the most. Ive loved every minute of being in Austin: when they picked this place for the US Grand Prix, they absolutely nailed it.

The city is awesome. I love listening to live music and this is a great place for that, plus Texas feels like real America, and thats something Ive really enjoyed just sinking into the last two seasons. And then, theres the important bit.

The Circuit of the Americas, in my opinion, is the best of the new breed of circuits. The nature of the corners is interesting. Its also a very busy track where you dont get much respite. The first sector is very special and that first turn, blind up the big hill is like nothing else in F1. Its also a good example of the excitement a late-apex can create: you can have a really good lunge there. Theyve done a very good job.

Sebastian Vettel: "Austin is a fun city where you get a real feel for the Texan lifestyle and traditions and get to race on a great track. The Circuit of the Americas is a track I like a lot; it has 20 corners and we drive it anti-clockwise. The start/finish straight has a steep incline up to the first corner and is the trademark of the track. For us that means the braking starts uphill, which is not easy and locking the front tyres could be a problem.

A lot of the corner combinations remind me of other famous circuits on the race calendar. For example the fast combination during the first part of the track feels like Silverstone and Suzuka. The famous Maggotts and Becketts passages were used as a model for this part of the track and the drivers enjoy the extremely fast turns, when the car is balanced right.

Also corners 12 and 15, this section was taken from the Motodrom in Hockenheim. It is a slower part of the track, and is designed to create more of a stadium atmosphere. The long bend also reminds of the famous turn 8 in Istanbul."

Youre from Michigan, which is just a bit to the north of Texas, so for a Yankee, whats the best thing to come out of Texas? I think its the Can do attitude of the people and the Dont mess with Texas spirit, which makes this city so special.

Austin dining delicacies: Tex Mex or BBQ? Definitely Tex Mex. Thats Mexican with a certain twist. I love Mexican food and in the UK, good Mexican food is not that easy to find. In Austin you can get the best Burritos.

Texas football: Dallas Cowboys (NFL) or Dallas FC (MLS)? (Or do the Detroit Lions top them all)? Its got to be the Dallas Cowboys. They are a great American Football team and have won multiple Superbowls. American Football definitely beats Soccer. Ive lived in the UK for 14 years now and I still prefer American Football. Where I grew up, Soccer was a girls sport.

Austins famous for its music culture - have you sampled it and whats your favourite place to see live music in the city? I have only been down there for races, so I didnt have a lot of free time. But the only place I saw was the Piano Bar on 6th Street. Really fun, interactive and good spirit.

F1: Red Bull: Mercedes isn't depressing

By Jonathan Noble Thursday, October 23rd 2014, 09:29 GMT

Red Bull boss Christian Horner says Mercedes' Formula 1 title success this year has served to fire up his team to do better in 2015, rather than leaving it depressed.

After winning the last four consecutive world championships, Red Bull's rule over F1 officially came to an end when rival Mercedes clinched the 2014 constructors' crown at the Russian Grand Prix.

Horner said the writing had been on the wall for Red Bull ever since its disastrous pre-season testing form, but he felt that his outfit could take encouragement for having kept the battle open so long.

"We've had a little bit of time to get our heads around it - from February in reality," he said.

"So, in all honesty Mercedes have done the best job this year and all it does is motivate you.

"You know how much work goes into winning a championship and we did it four times in a row, which is an enormous achievement. And while we had a disastrous year, we are still second."

He believes Red Bull has now proved itself in adversity, and believes engine partner Renault's winter developments will allow it to close the gap again.

"We are the only other team to have won a grand prix [in 2014], and three of them at that," said Horner.

East Helena Schools turn red against drug abuse

The streets of East Helena became a mass of children clad in red shirts marching and chanting against drug and alcohol abuse during Tuesdays Red Ribbon Week parade.

The annual parade kicked off at 2 p.m. bringing the entirety of the East Helena School District together, with parents and members of the community lining the streets to cheer the kids on. Some carried banners. Some played instruments. But all wore red ribbons to show their support for drug-free schools.

We have a strong tradition of supporting Red Ribbon Week with dressup days, and the parade as the pinnacle event, said East Valley Middle School principal Dan Rispens. The younger kids get to march in the parade, and at the same time we get the middle school kids out to cheer for them.

The theme for the week running from Oct. 23-30 is, Respect yourself, respect your health, be drug free, and the parade represents just one of themed dress-up days. On Monday, kids wore red, white and blue to stand united against drugs. On Tuesday, they donned team jerseys to team up against drugs. Parade day on Wednesday meant wearing red. On Thursday, kids are encouraged to invest in their future by wearing a vest. On Friday, kids can show that drugs are scary by wearing orange and black.

East Valley Middle School also holds a door decorating contest, with the winning classroom receiving a pizza party, Rispens said.

The National Red Ribbon Celebration traces its roots back to 1985 when parents and young people across the United States began wearing red ribbons after the murder of DEA agent Enrique Camarena in Mexico. First sponsored by the National Family Partnership in 1988, wearing the ribbons shows awareness of the violence and dangers of drugs in America, according to the organizations website.

East Helena police, fire department and ambulances led the parade from Radley School to East Valley Middle School. Teachers marched alongside their students and members of the community. Before long, the entire east half of Main Street was a sea of red, with some classes singing songs and others echoing chants of staying drug free.

Along with substance abuse, Red Ribbon Week also carries a message of anti-bullying, Rispens said, and East Valley will hold an assembly on Monday to talk to students about self-esteem.

As the last red wave of students made their way to East Valley, parents greeted them while teachers counted heads marking a successful parade and awareness campaign.

East Helena has always shown tremendous wiliness to support the parade and the message behind it, Rispens said.

ROWING | Red Competes at 50th Head of Charles Regatta

By TUCKER MAGGIO-HUCEK

The Cornell mens lightweight, heavyweight and womens rowing teams kicked off their fall season in Cambridge, Massachusetts, this past weekend. All three teams competed in the 50th Head of the Charles Regatta that had over 2,200 entries from all different backgrounds.

The mens lightweight team had two boats race on Sunday. The lightweight eights boat, which was led by senior captain Chris Rogers, finished the race in third place behind two Ivy League rivals. The race was extremely competitive, with all three boats finishing within .05 seconds of each other, as Princeton and Harvard edged out Cornell for first and second, respectively.

The eight had a really tight race and put us in a great position for the rest of the season and for winter and spring training, said senior captain Richard Richhart.

The other lightweight boat competed in the fours and had a strong showing, finishing in third behind two international foes. The London Training Center, who won the race, bested the Cornell boat by a large margin but junior Ian Sigal led the boat ahead of all other collegiate entries.

The four truly defined themselves against our League competition. They placed third and were only bested by international competition. Were all really proud of those athletes, Richhart said.

The heavyweights had two boats take to the waters in Massachusetts. In the mens championship fours the Red took seventh place and finished under 40 seconds behind the winners from Camp Randall, a rowing club from Wisconsin. The University of Wisconsin finished in sixth place, finishing just over three seconds before the Cornell boat.

In the mens championship eights, the heavyweight boat had a rough outing and finishing in 33rd out of 36 boats, thanks to a pair of collisions and a one minute penalty that was added on to their time. Harvard, Princeton and Yale all placed within the top-ten.

Despite being forced into some difficult situations, the womens boats started their fall season off in fine fashion. In the womens championship eights, the Cornell boat finished in 11th place in a race that included the United States National Team, Cambridge and Oxford.

The varsity eight had a very promising performance. We nearly collided with several boats and had a very exciting race, said senior captain Elyce Buell. Despite this we had a very competitive time compared to the other crews.

Red Raiders hoping to shoot down 10th-ranked Horned Frogs

Fort Worth, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Hoping to keep pace in the race for the Big 12 Conference crown, the 10th-ranked TCU Horned Frogs will play a home game this Saturday against the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Texas Tech opened the season with a pair of victories, but then went on to lose four in a row, including its first three conference games. The Red Raiders were able to stop the bleeding last week as they topped visiting Kansas, 34-21. Kliff Kingsbury's club needs three more wins to become bowl eligible, but the road is difficult as bouts with TCU, Texas, Oklahoma, Iowa State and Baylor remain.

TCU also kicked off the campaign with favorable results, claiming victory in each of first four games. A wild 61-58 loss to Baylor put the team at 1-1 in conference, but it bounced back to rout visiting Oklahoma State last weekend, 42-9. Coach Gary Patterson has his squad poised to make a run at the Big 12 title, but tough tilts with West Virginia, Kansas State and Texas are still to come.

Texas Tech leads the all-time series with TCU, 30-23-3, and the Red Raiders have won the last two meetings.

Texas Tech leading receiver Jakeem Grant (50 receptions, 629 yards, five TDs) was injured in an apparent shooting in Lubbock last Sunday morning, but his injuries weren't deemed overly serious and he could even play in this game. Grant caught six passes in last week's win over Kansas, helping the Red Raiders roll up more than 500 yards of total offense, compared to only 363 for the Jayhawks.

Davis Webb went 28-of-44 for 288 yards, three TDs and one INT, hitting three different receivers (Grant, Brad Marquez and Ian Sadler) for at least 68 yards. DeAndre Washington was highly productive in rushing for a career-best 164 yards on 23 carries.

Defensively, the Red Raiders surrendered 235 yards and a pair of scores through the air, but got solid individual performances from Pete Robertson and Austin Stewart with nine tackles apiece. Robertson was credited with two of the team's four sacks.

For the season, Texas Tech scores 30.9 ppg, doing so behind 488.3 ypg. Webb ranks second in the conference in averaging 319.9 ypg, and he has thrown a league-best 22 TD passes, but has been picked off a league-high 12 times. Grant is second in the Big 12 with 7.14 receptions per game, and Marquez sits seventh with 5.86. Washington ranks third with 88.9 rushing ypg, but he has found the end zone only once.

Texas Tech ranks last in the league in scoring defense (36.9 ppg), and foes have hammered the Red Raiders on the ground, leading to 239.0 ypg -- also placing the club last. The Red Raiders have only come up with three INTs and a mere eight takeaways in all. Robertson paces the unit with 54 tackles, which includes seven of the team's 13 sacks.

Kingsbury tries to keep an even keel, even as his team fought to put an end to its four-game skid.

Rizalman heads back to NZ this Friday

Cops are expected to travel to Malaysia to escort Rizalman to New Zealand.

PETALING JAYA: After months of complicated red tape and frayed relations between New Zealand and Malaysia, diplomat Muhammed Rizalman bin Ismail, appears to be headed back to New Zealand to face charges of burglary and sexual assault.

According to The New Zealand Herald, Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully said he was advised of a court case in Malaysia regarding the extradition order for Rizalman, a former envoy at the Malaysian High Commission in New Zealand.

Refusing to go into too much detail about Rizalmans impending trial, McCully did however state, The matter is entirely in the hands of the judicial system in both countries.

McCully also confirmed he had heard of a report that Rizalman would be returning Friday to New Zealand but that he left it to the police to either confirm or deny it.

Wellington police when contacted said the process of extradition was ongoing and that they would despatch their police officers to Malaysia to escort Rizalman back to New Zealand.

Both the ministry and police however remained cautious with information, giving very little else except the bare necessities.

Rizalman left New Zealand with diplomatic immunity on May 22 this year after a ministerial mix-up following allegations he had trailed a young woman, Tania Billingsley to her home in Brooklyn with the intention to rape her.

Formula One awaits Sebastian Vettel's move as series heads to U.S.

As Formula One heads to the United States for its next race Nov. 2, the series is still waiting for Sebastian Vettel to officially declare which team the four-time champion will join in 2015.

The 27-year-old German is widely expected to land at Ferrari. His departure is expected to trigger a domino effect among Formula One drivers, with two-time champion Fernando Alonso seen leaving Ferrari -- perhaps to join the McLaren team -- to make room for Vettel.

Vettel confirmed early this month that he would leave his current team, Red Bull Racing, after this season. But Vettel, Alonso and the teams involved have not confirmed any other moves as Formula One prepares for the U.S. Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas course in Austin, Texas.

With three races left in the Formula One season, former champion Lewis Hamilton -- who has won the last four races -- holds a modest 17-point lead over his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg for this year's driver's title.

Vettel, still without a win this season, is a distant fifth in the standings after winning the championship the last four years. Vettel's teammate, Daniel Ricciardo, has three victories this year.

If he moves to Ferrari, Vettel would be following in the footsteps of his hero and countryman Michael Schumacher, who won five of his record seven championships with Ferrari.

Ferrari, in turn, is eager to find a driver who can restore the team's Formula One glory. Ferrari hasn't won a race this year and the Italian team hasn't won a driver's title since Kimi Raikkonen, currently Alonso's teammate, did so in 2007.

England's Daily Mail reported early this month that Vettel was looking at a three-year contract with Ferrari that would pay him just under $80 million a year. Forbes said that would make Vettel one of the world's highest-paid athletes.

Watch your favorite indie rockers score 'Red Band Society'

Here's another reason why "Red Band Society" should be one of your favorite new shows of the fall: It's got a bevy of indie musicians creating the score you hear each week while you watch.

Zap2it got a hold of a behind-the-scenes featurette starring "Red Band" composer Ludwig Goransson and the famous friends he's recruited to play on the show, including Chris Hartz (Passion Pit, drums), Zac Rae (Fiona Apple, keyboards), Thomas Drayton (Childish Gambino, bass) and Sam Sugarman (guitars).

"I've been having a lot of conversations with the show creator and producers and directors and we've been talking about what we're trying to say with the music, what emotions we're trying to get out of the show," Goransson says. "We're trying to get inside the heads of the characters -- what kind of emotions are they going through when they're going through these hard times?"

This year's Red Charity Gala featured the work of Jojie Lloren.

Gala co-chair Tessa Prieto-Valdes fluttered soundlessly across the room, her salmon-colored cut-out platforms soft against the carpet (though her presence was loud and unmistakeable as ever), as she welcomed all her guestsloyal patrons, friends and supporters of a worthy cause.

I want you all to get smashed so that youll become more generous, she quipped.

A lavish affair, an exquisite cause

Now on its sixth year, the Red Charity Gala has become a staple in social events.

The suit gown makes a frequent appearance. From L-R: pieces by Vania Romoff, Malou Leonio, Lulu Tan Gan

With numerous sponsors and patrons and Manilas wealthiest on the guest list, it is an extravagant operation, and one that does not go without preparation.

Champagne and Cointreau-politans kept the room buzzing with lively chatter before the main event. Leading to the ballroom was a wall of fresh pink roses with tags that read Every rose is a thousand pesos more from Downy to Red Cross. A photo booth and separate photo mural ensured that guests had their share of captured memories.

Sabi ko Red Cross so Ill wear red! exclaimed one guest as she explained her outfit of choice for the evening. Amidst the numerous red dresses and glittering ensembles, the sleeved suit gown made a notable appearance. Donned by several including Lucy Torres-Gomez, this simple style turned many heads with its feminine take on a very masculine fashion.

A massive 180 km pipeline-canal megaproject to bring water from the Red Sea could prevent the Dead Sea from disappearing while improving the region's environmental, energy and peace prospects, according to a book of insights into major global topics launched today by an association of 40 former government leaders and heads of state and UN University's Institute for Water, Environment and Health.

Commissioned from leading experts on issues of universal concern, the authors include former Jordanian Prime Minister Abdel Salam Majali and Moneef R. Zou'bi, respectively the President and Director General of the Islamic World Academy of Sciences, who say the innovative Red-Dead Canal offers the potential to secure human well-being while promoting regional stability.

For years, Israel, Syria and Jordan have diverted more than 90 percent of the southward flow of the River Jordan to agricultural and industrial purposes, choking the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth, causing "severe negative consequences on the ecosystem, industry, and wildlife in the area," says Dr. Zou'bi. "Due to gradual water loss, the sea has split into two separate lakes and its coastline has receded significantly. The River Jordan is a shadow of its former glorious self."

The Red-Dead Canal, as envisioned by Jordan, is a 180-kilometre, partially covered pipeline across Wadi Araba a dry plateau stretching from the Gulf of Aqaba in the south to the Dead Sea in the north. It would carry around 1.5 billion cubic meters of water per year, pumped first to an altitude of 150 metres above sea level before flowing down a 580-metre decline.

Not only would the three-party project (Jordan-Israel-the Palestinians) restore most of the Dead Sea water level over time, it would generate hydroelectricity to power large desalination plants, relieving chronic freshwater shortages and helping to meet energy needs.

TORONTO

Disappointed with his play in Detroit's loss in its last game, Henrik Zetterberg came through in a big way against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Zetterberg had four assists and Johan Franzen scored twice to lead the Red Wings to a 4-1 victory over the Maple Leafs on Friday night.

Zetterberg managed just one shot on goal and was outworked on faceoffs by Boston's Patrice Bergeron in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Bruins on Wednesday night.

"The way we played Wednesday in our house against Boston ... it could've been one of my worst games as a Red Wing," Zetterberg said. "It was a tough game and I didn't have much. It was nice to feel better today and bounce back a little bit."

Gustav Nyquist and Justin Abdelkader also scored and Jimmy Howard stopped 23 shots for Detroit.

Franzen left the game late in the second period with a lower-body injury and did not return. However, he expected to play Saturday when the teams complete the home-and-home series at Detroit.

"It just cramped up, the whole side, a really tight spasm," Franzen said. "It relaxed a little bit, I got out for the next shift and it just seized up on me. As soon as I pushed it just cramped up on me, so hopefully it goes away tomorrow."
