Red Wings soar past Maple Leafs in decisive victory

TORONTO Booed off the ice at the second intermission, the Toronto Maple Leafs watched another blue and white jersey get hurled to the ice in the third period.

They werent happy about that or their performance in a 4-1 loss to the Detroit Red Wings.

"Any time you lose in the National Hockey League, as players, were not happy about it," captain Dion Phaneuf said Friday night. "The fans have a right to be upset. They come to support us, they want to see winning hockey and we want to win for them. But when we dont play well, its unfortunate when jerseys are thrown on the ice."

"For whatever reason, we find ways to make life more difficult for ourselves, and thats the most frustrating part," Carlyle said. "We played too much on our heels and in the defensive zone."

Thats never a good sign.

"It was nice to feel better today and bounce back a little bit," Zetterberg said.

Zetterberg took advantage of a turnover by Roman Polak to set up Johan Franzens first of the night, then made the most of a bad change by Morgan Rielly for Franzens second. Zetterberg won a race to a puck on Nyquists fourth goal in four games this season, and he picked up a secondary assist on Justin Abdelkaders goal with Cody Franson standing frozen in front of the net.

Detroit coach Mike Babcock called Zetterberg his teams "catalyst." Jimmy Howard made 23 saves but wasnt tested much in goal.

Down at the other end, Reimer wasnt at his sharpest in allowing four goals on 35 shots.

Red Wings 4, Maple Leafs 1

TORONTO - Penalties and turnovers turned to a cascade boos as the Toronto Maple Leafs turned in an uninspired performance against the Detroit Red Wings. One fan even threw his blue and white jersey on the ice in protest.

It was that kind of night as the Leafs never quite got in a rhythm and couldn't stop Henrik Zetterberg in a 4-1 loss to the Red Wings on Friday at Air Canada Centre.

Zetterberg exploited some shaky defence and assisted on all four Detroit goals, two by Johan Franzen, one each by Gustav Nyquist and Justin Abdelkader. The Red Wings' captain set up each of the first three and got the primary assists.

James Reimer wasn't at his best in allowing four goals on 35 shots. Mike Santorelli scored the Leafs' only goal.

After scoring his first two goals of the season, Franzen left the game late in the second with a lower-body injury and did not return.

The Leafs visit Detroit on Saturday night for the second half of this back-to-back. Jonathan Bernier is expected to start at Joe Louis Arena.

Though the pace was quick out of the gate, neither team had a shot on net for the game's first five-plus minutes. The Red Wings (2-1-1) came up empty on an early power play, too.

But Detroit got on the board with their third shot exactly midway through the first. Roman Polak gave the puck away to Zetterberg behind the net and he made a slick cross-crease pass to Franzen for his first of the season.

The Leafs (2-3-0) took two more penalties the remainder of the period, but Reimer and the PK units got the job done. Winger Brandon Kozun even cut the final kill short by drawing one of his own.

Amare willing to soak up remedies to recover

ASSOCIATED PRESS Photo via @amareisreal/Instagram

The Knicks Amare Stoudemire talking with reporters recently, left, and soaking in red wine.

GREENBURGH, N.Y. Before we shake our heads or make a joke, let us all consider the frustration that has nagged at Amare Stoudemire as he has had to sit out 89 regular-season games over the last three seasons, a once-elite athlete forced to play limited minutes, limited games and a limited role for the Knicks.

Now, add into the mix a $100 million contract and the ability to try anything to recover the form he once held.

And that is how you wind up here: Stoudemire posting a selfie on Instagram on Wednesday night of himself soaking in a red wine bath.

"The red wine bath is very important to me because it allows me to create more circulation in my red blood cells," Stoudemire explained after Knicks practice Thursday. "Plus, its very hot, so its like a hot tub. But the red wine just kind of soothes the body, which follows up with a 90-minute massage and then also you have the ancient tub. So you have like a salt tub and a hot tub and a cold plunge and a pool and you just kind of mix it all up."

Stoudemire long ago reached the try-anything phase of his career, not unlike other athletes who struggle with injury and recovery. He spends time before every game on the floor of the locker room with his legs encased in large black tubes that fill with air, reading while teammates hustle around the room. This latest effort came courtesy of his wife, Alexis.

A search on the Internet finds mixed reviews of the process, but plenty of spots to perform it. The thinking is that the antioxidant resveratrol will soak through the skin during a 30-minute stay in the tub and help with recovery after days of hard work on the court.

"Ive been doing it for like six to eight months now," he said. "[Wednesday] I felt great after doing that. My legs felt rejuvenated. I felt great, so Im going to continue to do that for sure."

Stoudemire was limited last year, avoiding back-to-back games and playing under a team-imposed 30-minute limit per game although late in the season he pushed those limits as he started down the stretch. He might be the most talented power forward on the roster again, but the Knicks new regime seems equally cautious in approaching his role.

Acorn bumper crop turns heads in WNC

By GERALDINE H. DINKINS Times-News Correspondent

The staccato barrage of falling acorns has become the rhythm of nature's soundtrack anywhere within "firing distance" of a white or red oak since early September.

As trails and parking lots morph into marble runs and streets, streams and metal roofs act as amplifiers to nerve-startling torrents of acorns, longtime residents' talk has turned to predictions of a harsh winter or, at the very least, of a challenging hunting season in WNC.

Forest and wildlife officials discredit the future-telling powers of oaks, but they do agree that this fall's acorn production is well above average and will likely affect wildlife populations and hunting this fall and winter.

"It's pretty well a bumper crop and a good one even for a bumper crop year," said David Stewart, a land management biologist with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. "Everyone is noticing it, I've heard it said in calls and seen it with my own two eyes."

Acorn bumper crops happen in three- to five-year cycles, Stewart said, based on scientific counts of marked trees's "mast fruiting" behavior a term used for hardwood trees' reproductive activities. Others who, like Stewart, spend a lot of time gazing up into forest canopies echo his opinion it's a bumper crop year all right, but it happens with some regularity. The reasons largely are not well understood.

"Mast fruiting is not happening due to any one contributing factor," said Brian Schneider, who holds a master's degree in forestry from the University of Maine and is an instructor in Haywood Community College's Forest Management Technology Program.

"We don't understand whether these oaks have some kind of sense that leads to this super-saturation of acorns," Schneider said. "What we know is that a lot of variables from weather to the overall health of the trees can produce these big acorn crops, but we don't understand it very well, because of the lag time."

In other words, while a late frost three years ago and a wet summer two years' past may contribute to an abundant acorn production, Schneider sees little evidence at least not in documented science that oak trees can predict the severity of the winter ahead and respond to it by throwing off acorns in massive numbers.

"Why we get this bumper crops every few years is largely a mystery," he said. "Personally, I don't put much stock in them being a predictor of anything."

Horner determined to regain F1 title for Red Bull

Updated: Monday, 13 Oct 2014 11:40 | Comments Christian Horner with four-time F1 world champion Sebastian Vettel

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has warned Mercedes to enjoy their success whilst they can as he is determined to wrest back the Formula One constructors' trophy next season.

After four years of domination in the sport, Red Bull's reign as champions officially came to an end in Russia on Sunday.

On the back of their ninth one-two of the campaign - one short of McLaren's record set in 1988 - Mercedes captured the constructors' crown for the first time in their long motorsport history.

Horner was always aware the day would come, almost from the first day of pre-season given the woes of their own power-unit supplier Renault.

Plagued by countless problems, Red Bull barely covered any mileage in pre-season testing, yet despite that they are certain to finish as runners-up, with Daniel Ricciardo winning three races. Paying respect to Mercedes' performance, Horner said: "Congratulations to Mercedes and all their guys who have designed and made the power unit. They've done a really incredible job this year.

"They're deserving champions, with the constructors' trophy going 12 miles up the road."

With a smile, Horner added: "We've had a little bit of time to get our heads round it - from February in reality.

"In all honesty, Mercedes have done the best job this year, but all it does is motivate you.

"You know how much work goes into winning a championship, and to win it four times in a row is an enormous achievement.

Toronto FC playoff hopes fade fast after loss to Red Bulls

HARRISON, N.J.At this rate, the Maple Leafs might not be the only MLSE sports property who knows about late season collapses.

Toronto FC dropped a 3-1 decision to the New York Red Bulls Saturday night at Red Bull Arena, continuing a late-season swoon in which it has lost three in a row. Coupled with Columbus 3-2 win over Philadelphia, Toronto is now six points out of the last Eastern Conference playoff spot held by the Crew.

Both Toronto (11-14-7) and Columbus have two games remaining this season. Toronto hosts Montreal Saturday afternoon, before ending the regular season at the New England Revolution on Oct. 25.

Columbus visits New York next Sunday, and ends the home portion of their season Oct. 26 against Philadelphia.

Should Toronto FC not qualify for the MLS playoffs, one of the determining factors it can look back on will be a 19-minute stretch in the first half in which New York (12-9-11) scored three times.

Bradley Wright-Phillips opened the scoring in the 26th minute by tapping Kosuke Kimuras centring feed past Joe Bendik. Wright-Phillips goal was his MLS-leading 25th of the season.

Nine minutes later, Ruben Bover Izquierdo increased the lead to 2-0 with his first MLS goal after Bendik punched a Thierry Henry shot into a maze of players in front of the net which landed in front of the midfielder.

The deficit grew to 3-0 when Dax McCarthy redirected Wright-Phillips diagonal feed in the 45th minute.

Bendik made two saves in the losing effort.

Torontos best chance in the first half was Nick Hagglunds header off a corner in the 22nd minute, but New York goalkeeper Luis Robles made a leaping grab to keep the game scoreless. Robles finished with two saves with his shutout bid spoiled by Jonathan Osorios goal in the 55th minute.

Tropical Cyclone Hudhud heads for India; red alert issued

NEW DELHI, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- The Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System has issued a red alert for India as Tropical Cyclone Hudhud approaches.

The alert, issued Wednesday, is in effect until Friday. With landfall expected over the weekend, a new alert will likely be issued.

India's port city of Visakhapatnam, home to two million people, is in the direct line of Tropical Cyclone Hudhud.

District officials along the Bay of Bengal in Andhra Pradesh are bracing for the storm, and have issued a high alert for residents.

"Open relief camps wherever needed and move people from vulnerable areas to safety. Keep essential commodities ready for the evacuees," Andhra Pradesh Chief Secretary IYR Krishna Rao directed officials in a video-conference Thursday.

As residents prepare for the storm, the Times of India reports "the prices of vegetables have increased by 40 percent since Monday" and "some items like candles have vanished from shops."

According to GDACS, the cyclone has a maximum wind speed of 185 km/hour and could impact 9.4 million people in its path. "Tropical Cyclone Hudhud-14 can have a high humanitarian impact based on the maximum sustained wind speed and the affected population and their vulnerability."

The Weather Channel reported Thursday the cyclone, also known by its alphanumeric designation 03B, "is strengthening as it churns over the Bay of Bengal in the northern Indian Ocean basin."

Once it makes landfall possibly early Sunday, the U.S. Naval Observatory's Joint Typhoon Warning Center expects Hudhud to dissipate and become the equivalent of a Category 3 hurricane.

London Markets: FTSE 100 heads for one-year low after tumultuous week

LONDON (MarketWatch) Most U.K. stocks were mired in the red on Friday, setting the FTSE 100 index on track for a third straight week of losses.

The benchmark index UKX, -1.20% slumped 0.6% to 6,392.65. If it closes around this level, it would mark the lowest close in a year.

Stocks across Europe have taken a hard beating this week, after a raft on lackluster data from German spurred concerns the regions largest economy is heading for a recession.

This line about Germany slipping into recession is simply layering on another level of angst to a market that is already wary of the threat posed by the likes of Ebola in West Africa and Islamic State in the Middle East, said Tony Cross, market analyst at Trustnet Direct, in a note Friday.

Mining firms posted some of the biggest losses on Friday, a reversal from Thursdays upbeat mood when a weaker dollar helped boost commodity prices. Shares of Anglo American PLC AAL, -2.43% lost 2.3% on Friday, Randgold Resources Ltd. RRS, -2.47% declined 1.9%, Rio Tinto PLC RIO, -2.83% RIO, -2.45% RIO, -3.00% fell 1.7%, and BHP Billiton PLC BLT, -3.15% BHP, -2.55% BHP, -2.74% lost 1.3%.

Shares of British American Tobacco PLC BATS, -1.18% BTI, -1.39% dropped 0.8% after Goldman Sachs cut the company to sell from neutral, according to Dow Jones Newswires.

For Red Arrow Int'l, Scripted Dramas Translate Into Event Programming

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) - Recent years have seen a strengthening in the market for bigger-budget drama that can serve as event programming for broadcasters. Red Arrow Intl. is in the vanguard of that trend, with high-profile shows like "Roald Dahl's Esio Trot," "100 Code" and "Bosch."

"If you have a well-known cast, a great writer and showrunner, a program is on the road to becoming a successful event program," says Irina Ignatiew, who heads the company alongside fellow managing director Henrik Pabst.

The market has benefited from the entry of streaming services like Netflix, which licensed "Lilyhammer," and Amazon, which commissioned "Bosch." "The opportunities to create high-quality stories and formats are better than ever," says Pabst. "Since those new services are particularly reliant on attractive content in order to entice new subscribers, they are prepared to come up with serious budgets and are willing to invest in high-quality productions."

The rise of non-linear services, both pure streaming operators like Netflix and Amazon, and the ancillary services offered by traditional free and pay TV operators, has allowed new forms of drama to take root. In the crime genre, for example, with shows like "100 Code" and "Bosch," more time can be devoted to character and more complicated plotlines.

"The market has changed," says Ignatiew. "Theatrical talent is moving more and more into television, enabling us to tell stories in a more thorough and creative way. Procedurals with closed storylines don't allow for much character development, and now through serialization we are able to take a more cinematic approach to the storytelling."

Comedy can offer a challenge for distributors, but dramedies can be very popular, and have offered a rich vein for Red Arrow Intl. to mine. Steven van Zandt starrer "Lilyhammer," which has sold to more than 150 territories, provides a telling example. "Every country has its own sense of humor; therefore, a broad and universal appeal is key to its success," Ignatiew says. "With 'Lilyhammer,' this works very well, and Steve van Zandt's hilarious fish-out-of-water performance makes it must-see TV."

Red Arrow Develops a 'Taste' for What Stands Out in Reality

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) - Unscripted shows form a major part of the Red Arrow Intl. slate with a wide range of gameshows and reality formats on offer. One of its biggest hits is cooking show "The Taste," which has sold to more than 80 territories as either a taped show -- which is produced for ABC in the U.S. and stars Nigella Lawson and Anthony Bourdain -- or a format.

The market for cooking-show formats is very competitive and to be successful, shows need a twist, such as the blind audition on "The Taste." "Midnight Feast," another cooking show on the slate, also features a twist: Competitors are in a closed food hall where they can use every ingredient, but if they lose they foot the bill.

"What I believe makes 'Midnight Feast' stand out is its combination of reality, cooking and competition all set on location away from the studio," says Henrik Pabst, who heads Red Arrow Intl. alongside Irina Ignatiew. "This gives the show a much younger and fresher feel, which is often missing in more traditional cooking programming."

An emerging unscripted trend is social experiment reality shows. Red Arrow Intl. has two such programs: "Married at First Sight," in which single folk wed strangers selected by experts; and "Escape Your Life," where couples are offered a chance to reinvent themselves.

"In the end it is about the idea," says Pabst. "It is about what it looks like. It's about whether the viewer can jump in at any time and play along."

Red Band Society season 1, episode 4 recap: We need to talk about Emma

Last nights episode of Red Band Society featured a homecoming dance, the worst mother in the world, and some questionable decision-making.

Red Band Society season 1, episode 4 aired last night. In this recap we discuss all the different storylines, and ask the questions that need to be addressed.

Kara (Zoe Levin)s storyline this episode was pretty straightforward, and yet revealed something new about her personality (although it still doesnt make much sense).

In an attempt to get back to normalcy, Kara goes back to high school for the homecoming party, where she intends to remind people of her fearsome existence.

Instead she is treated like a homecoming hero; all her former enemies now love and pity her, and she has to accept the homecoming queen crown while sitting in a wheelchair.

Earlier that evening, Kara explained to Leo (Charlie Rowe) that she hated the attention; she didnt want to be pitied, she wanted to be feared. Understanding this, Leo jumps onto the stage to interrupt the false celebration of her, throwing insults at Kara we now know she doesnt only deserve, but also actively seeks out.

This revelation is somewhat reassuring for viewers who have been scratching their heads at Karas behaviour. What she says and does is not born out of some misguided attempt to be popular, and she doesnt actually think its acceptable; Kara is, for some reason, actively pursuing being a legitimately bad person who it is impossible to like.

Its nice to know that theres a reason for her behaviour, though when the revelation of why she wants to be hated comes, its probably going to be something predictable like, love is easy to lose, but fear you can control. Well see.

Damn, Leo is one insightful teenager.

At the beginning of the episode Leo is flashing back to his soccer playing days. Hes been contacted by a scout from Stanford who wants to see him play, and as he explains to Nurse Jackson (Octavia Spencer), he wont be able to attend college without a scholarship.

Field Hockey: Red Storm batter Scots

Scarborough swept into Buxton Saturday morning, unleashing a torrent of goals on the Scots, who found themselves unable to keep their heads above the level of the Red Storm surge. Victoria Timm put Scarborough on the board early, and Lily Nygrens mid-game hat trick all but sank any Bonny Eagle chance of fighting back. The Scots ultimately fell, 10-0, to the Red Storm.

Struggling Bonny Eagle, ranked 16th at present, slip to 1-10. Scarborough, on the other hand, continues its march across the face of western Maine, moving to 11-0 and tightening their grip on first place.

[We] spread the field well and looked to transition the ball with precision passes, using the space to [our] advantage, Red Storm head coach Kerry Mariello said. Once the ball was in our offensive zone, we took advantage of scoring opportunities. This was a well-balanced victory for [us].

Timms goal came early, on a Kaitlyn Prince assist. Soon after, Abby Walker made it 2-0 all by her lonesome. Emma Crovo from Maddie Dobecki pushed the Red Storm another notch further ahead before Nygrens take-no-prisoners rampage on assists by Ashley Levesque, Sydney Rusak and Dobecki juiced their advantage to 6-0.

The Red Storm have almost exclusively pick any appropriately destructive-sounding, storm-related verb blown away their opposition this season. Wrecked them, swamped them, whatever. In those 11 wins, Scarborough have scored 77 goals, and allowed just one, to No. 6 Sanford (7-3). Like their namesakes, the Spartans made their stand, dealt their blow, but ultimately fell in this case, 2-1 to an overwhelming, invading force.

Similarly, by the time the Red Storm had finished in Buxton, theyd added four more goals by Dobecki (from Walker), Kristen Murray (Kristen Levesque), Ashley Levesque (Lucy Bogdanovich) and Kristen Levesque (Murray) all while holding the Scots silent.

Its difficult to see how the Red Storm wont go category five through the playoffs and into the State Game, where Skowhegan emerged from the East last year to snuff them. 2014s crop of top teams from across the way again includes the Indians, as well as Lawrence and Messalonskee. All three teams are 10-1, and have exactly the same Heal Point indices. Whoever takes part, the battle for the title this Nov. 1 should be art in motion.

And lest anyone think its too early yet to speak of the playoffs: there are only three regular-season games remaining on Scarboroughs schedule: home against McAuley (Oct. 8, 6 p.m.); away at Cheverus (Oct. 10, time TBD); and home against Deering (Oct. 14, 6 p.m.).

Similarly, Bonny Eagle has just a trio of games left to play: at South Portland (Oct. 8, 4 p.m.); home against Thornton (Oct. 10, 4 p.m.); and at Westbrook (Oct. 14, 4 p.m.).

Lily Collins, 25, looked absolutely stunning at the Love, Rosie premiere at the Odeon West End in London on Oct. 6. While Lily is not a Hollywood heavyweight, this stylish star is part of the young Hollywood bunch and her bold statements on the red carpet, (along with the big screen!), leave us wanting more from the star.

She wore a Solace London dress that was perfect for a leading lady. Lily stepped out wearing this beautiful and modern frock while attending the premiere of her new movie. The dress is a solid shade of bold red and features a turtleneck. Cutouts on the side cinch in her waist and put her svelte frame on display and there was more where that came from! When she turned around she showed off a huge cutout at the back which balanced out the more conservative style from the front. With her bob slicked back she opted for some sexy edge and it totally worked.

She opted to wear minimal jewelry and bright red stilettos, which matched her dress. While Lily is usually one to play it safe and sweet on the red carpet, she definitely amped up her style and truly made herself known in this sexy number. This frock made us excited to see what else she has up her sleeve when it comes to her red carpet choices!

Lilys new movie follows the story of Rosie and Alex, two best friends since childhood, as they travel on their journey through love and life. The movie hits theaters in the UK on Oct. 22 and is expected to be out in the US early 2015.

"AHS: Freak Show" gets red carpet treatment

Actresses Jyoti Amge and Erika Ervin attend the premiere of FX's "American Horror Story: Freak Show" on Oct. 5, 2014, in Hollywood, California. Kevin Winter/Getty Images

The red carpet was rolled out in Los Angeles on Sunday for the premiere of "Freak Show," the fourth season of the "American Horror Story" anthology series.

Co-creator Ryan Murphy said Lange came up with this season's concept.

"I think back in season one, she said, 'We've got to do carnival, freak shows,' and she kept sending me books," he revealed on the red carpet.

This "AHS" chapter -- set in Jupiter, Florida, in 1952 -- revolves around one of the last touring companies of physically different humans. The attraction includes a bearded lady and a woman with three breasts.

The problem is that business is bad, forcing owner Elsa Mars (portrayed by Lange) to go to great lengths to assure that the show goes on.

With his creative partner Brad Falchuk, Murphy eventually embraced the idea. He wanted this season to imbue a spooky, early 1950s sci-fi feel, and he wanted to give cast member Sarah Paulson an impossible role.

She plays the characters of Bette and Dot Tattler, conjoined twins who may be the star attraction that Elsa's show desperately needs.

Paulson called the roles "the most difficult thing I've ever done in my life."

She said the characters' heads can't turn to look into each other's eyes.
