Happy Birthday, Kendall Jenner! Let's Look Back at Her Best Red Carpet MomentsAnd A Few Runway Styles Too!

by Lindsey Sirera Mon., Nov. 3, 2014 9:44 AM PST

With a hugely successful modeling career already tucked under her belt, it's hard to believe that Kendall Jenner is only turning 19 today! And to help the budding supermodel celebrate, we're rewinding through her best red carpet hits yet.

Back in 2013, Kendall crushed the AMA red carpet in sultry white Keepsake cutout top and asymmetrical skirt combo. Paired with ultra-sleek straight hair and a Dylanex silver statement necklace, Kendall proved that she was a natural styling pro.

Recall the E! star's 2014 Met Gala gown? We don't know what's more shocking herethat her drool-worthy champagne gown is by Topshop, or that this was her first Met Gala ever. Because really, girl looks like a red carpet regular in this exquisite ensemble.

NEWS: Kendall Jenner's and Bruce Jenner's birthday gifts revealed

Kendall turned more than a few heads at the 2014 MuchMusic Awards when she wore a racy, hip-bone-baring Fausto Puglisi gown. It may have been her most daring look yet, and it so paid off.

Even on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet earlier this year, Kendall earned her best-dressed title in an edgy monochromatic Chanel dress. And just when we were getting used to Kendall's posh gownsbam! She shook up her normal red carpet style with a razor-sharp Alon Livne mesh top and high-waisted trousers combo at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards.

PHOTOS: Kendall Jenner's Runway Shows

And while her red carpet style is impeccable, it's her red-hot runway looks that are really eye-catching. Yep, the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star took over New York Fashion Week this fall, popping up on the A-grade runways of Diane von Furstenberg, Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs and Tommy Hilfiger. But she didn't stop thereMilan and Paris' fashion weeks were also on the in-demand models busy schedule. From feisty jeweled Dolce & Gabbana frocks to scandalous, skin-baring Balmain designs, the 19-year-old proved that she's a model force to be reckoned with.

After a whirlwind year of dominating red carpets and runways across the globe, we'd say the brunette beauty deserves a little rest and relaxation on her birthday. Enjoy your big day, Kendall!

Red Cadeaux in prime form in Australia as he sets out to win the Melbourne Cup after two near misses

Few would begrudge Red Cadeaux victory in an Emirates Melbourne Cup which has almost been marked for export already.

Eleven of the 24 horses going to post at Flemington in the early hours of Tuesday morning British time are trained outside Australia, and the likely favourite is the top-weight from Japan, Admire Rakti.

Twice runner-up, by a nose in 2011 and then when seemingly written off 12 months ago, Red Cadeaux appears to prefer the confines of the international quarantine centre at Werribee to his own Newmarket stable.

Red Cadeauxs trainer, Ed Dunlop, believes it is the individual attention the nine-year-old receives from assistant Robin Trevor-Jones and work rider Steve Nicholson on these overseas trips which encourages him to produce his very best on the track.

Whether we trail in at the back, just to be able to bring a horse from Europe to run in four Melbourne Cups, I doubt it will happen again. Of course it might do, but would be a long time before it does, Dunlop said. Were part of it, and weve got a shot. He doesnt win very often but he runs very well in Australia.

Both Roger Varian and Marco Botti, Dunlops near-neighbours in Newmarket, will be cheering on the chestnut if their respective runners Ambivalent and Seismos are unable prevail themselves. We would all like to have a horse like Red Cadeaux, Varian said.

While there has never been a British-trained winner, there is perhaps a better chance of a British-ridden one. Ryan Moore is flying across from Saturday nights Breeders Cup in California to partner the German challenger Protectionist, who caught the eye in a prep-run at Caulfield last month and is drawn well in stall 11.

Saeed Bin Suroor (Cavalryman and Willing Foe) and John Gosden (Gatewood) also have feasible chances, while Johnny Murtagh (Mutual Regard and Royal Diamond) is hoping to become only the second Irish trainer after Dermot Weld to claim the race that stops a nation.

SHREWSBURY -- What upset?

Despite Fitchburg High's sub-.500 record and low No. 7 seed, it never doubted it could eliminate talented St. John's of Shrewsbury in the Central Mass. Division 2 playoffs.

The headstrong and confident Red Raiders turned more heads Saturday afternoon at a wet, cold and muddy Pioneer Field.

Manny Payton hauled in a 21-yard TD pass from Darius Flowers in the fourth quarter and the defense stood strong late, as Fitchburg shocked Central Mass. football with a come-from-behind 22-15 quarterfinal triumph over the second-seeded Pioneers.

"Obviously we're playing with a lot of confidence," Fitchburg coach Dan Walker said. "We didn't think this was going to be an upset if we won.

The Red Raiders were covered in mud and soaked to the bone due to the constant rain throughout the game, but all were beaming with pride after advancing into the semifinal round.

"It wasn't an upset, but people forget about us," Payton said. "People forgot about us and people don't know what we're capable of. We knew it."

Fitchburg -- a winner of four straight to improve to 4-4 overall after losing four straight to open the season -- travels to face No. 3 Wachusett next week in a semifinal. The Mountaineers overcame a 14-point deficit to beat the Red Raiders, 36-20, on Sept. 19.

"This group of kids on the field, we've all been together for three years and this is the biggest win we've had since we've been here," Walker said. "I'm proud of them and we're going to keep moving forward."

Wright-Phillips 2 goals propel Red Bulls into conference semis

On Wednesday, Thierry Henry called Red Bulls teammate Bradley Wright-Phillips the deserving MLS MVP, and before Thursdays playoff game, the fans unveiled a TIFO that declared him the Ultimate Scoring Machine. Then the English striker went out and proved them all right, carrying the Red Bulls to a come-from-behind 2-1 win.

Wright-Phillips who broke the leagues single-season scoring record with 27 goals in the regular season followed up with an encore in the postseason. His two goals in the latter stages of a one-off knockout round game gave the Red Bulls a victory over defending MLS Cup champion Sporting KC.

Wright-Phillips scored on an Henry assist to tie it in the 77th minute, and then somehow got wide open in the box for a back-post header in the 90th minute. The goal set off scarlet-colored smoke bombs among the 15,518 fans, and sent the Red Bulls to their first playoff win in Red Bull Arena and first at home since 2005.

The ball was quite high wasnt it? I thought I couldnt get much of it. I just tried to get it on target, Wright-Phillips said. I was pretty excited. That ball initially I thought was going to be caught. I looked at the fans and they were going crazy so it made me go nuts. It took as deflection, but I dont care. I heard the announcer say Bradley Wright Phillips.

The Red Bulls will play top-seeded archrival D.C. in the Eastern Conference semifinals. The first game will be Sunday at 4 p.m., with the road leg at RFK Nov. 8.

Bradley turned to me in the 60th and said we cant go home, Tim Cahill said. And I said were not going home. They were their own worst enemy. When they got that goal, it meant that we had to come out.

The boys, theres a great togetherness. [Coach Mike Petke] is making sure we remember its not just about technique and football. Weve got drive and heart, and thats what this league is all about. Weve got that.

The Red Bulls also have another shot at an MLS Cup before what feels like an inevitable closing of this window. The contract for the Henry, 37, expires at years end, and he is undecided about retirement. There is also continuing speculation that Cahill could be leaving.

We knew if we didnt win we were going on holiday and thats not what we wanted, Henry said.

The Red Bulls fell behind in the 53rd when midfielder Benny Feilhaber intercepted a pass for Eric Alexander, and played a through-ball to Dom Dwyer for the score. But the Red Bulls equalized in the 77th.

Red Bulls beat Sporting KC 2-1 to advance

HARRISON, N.J. (AP) Thierry Henry won't be retiring at least for two more games.

The 37-year-old Frenchman set up the first of Bradley Wright-Phillips' two goals in the final 13 minutes and helped rally New York to a 2-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City on Thursday night.

The result eliminated the defending MLS Cup champion from the playoffs and sent the Red Bulls to the conference semifinals.

New York will host D.C. United on Sunday in the first of a two-leg semifinal series. D.C. will host the second leg on Nov. 8.

Henry is in the final year of his contract with New York and, despite several media reports indicating he intends to retire, has not commented publicly about intentions.

He once again did not address the question, and Red Bulls coach Mike Petke grew exasperated when asked if he thought about the match being Henry's last when New York trailed.

"Do I have to get it tattooed on my head? I have no clue what Thierry's going to do," Petke said. "I said it enough already. Thierry, I think, could play two more years."

After Dom Dwyer finished a counter in the 53rd minute to put Kansas City ahead, Henry led New York's rally, forcing Kansas City keeper Eric Kronberg to tip his header over the bar in the 55th minute and volleying a loose ball high in the 72nd.

Then in the 77th minute, he took a feed from Peguy Luyindula and sent a short ball into the middle of the penalty area. Wright-Phillips struck it first time, knocking it off the leg of defender Matt Besler and inside the far post.

With less than a minute to go, Wright-Phillips won the game, knocking in a header off a cross from Ambroise Oyongo.

Seattle, LA favorites as MLS playoffs get going

Seattle is trying to make MLS history. Los Angeles would love nothing more than to send Landon Donovan into retirement raising another trophy.

New England is the hottest team in the league entering the playoffs after the addition of midfielder Jermaine Jones. And New York's Bradley Wright-Phillips gets two more games to try to add to his scoring barrage while questions linger about whether this will be Thierry Henry's farewell to the MLS.

The MLS Cup playoffs get started in earnest this weekend with the first of the two-leg, aggregate-score conference semifinals. Seattle enters as the favorite after winning the Supporters' Shield as the best team in the league during the regular season. But only twice in the past decade has the Supporters' Shield winner gone on to win the MLS Cup title.

New this year to the MLS postseason is the introduction of away goals as a deciding factor. That tiebreaker has been a staple of the Champions League in Europe but has only been introduced into the MLS playoff structure.

"It rewards you for playing on the road and not just sitting back and trying to get a 0-0 result on the road and coming home. So you think about it a little bit more," Seattle coach Sigi Schmid said.

Here are the conference semifinal matchups:

WESTERN CONFERENCE

SEATTLE SOUNDERS vs. FC DALLAS

Seattle is trying to become the first team to win the U.S. Open Cup, Supporters' Shield and MLS Cup title in the same season. The Sounders were the first club since ties were introduced to finish the regular season with 20 victories. Getting to an MLS Cup title match would be the final step for Seattle. Seattle has advanced to the Western Conference finals only once in its five previous playoff trips. Seattle went 2-1 in the regular season against Dallas, including an important 3-2 comeback win on the road early. The Sounders beat Dallas 2-1 in Seattle in May, but dropped their last trip to Texas in September when David Texiera scored twice and an 88th-minute goal by Blas Perez capped the 3-1 win.

Rosie Huntington-Whitely looks smoking hot in red leopard print in new shoot for Vogue Mexico

She always looks a million dollars, but our eyes nearly popped out of our heads when we saw Rosie Huntington-Whitely in red leopard print.

The gorgeous supermodel, who has legs to die for, features in a new photoshoot for Vogue Mexico which is so hot we had to be the first to show you it via sneaky Instagram shots.

Rosie is seen relaxing in a laundrette in one snap, although she doesn't look like she's been focusing on her chores, as she kicks back in a pair of red stilettos and rests her toned pins across a trolley full of clothes.

The photos, taken by snapper James Macari, were posted by Sarah GoreReeves, fashion director for Vogue Mexico, who gushed about the model in a series of hashtags.

The blonde star, 27, looks incredible in the patterned one piece and a long red coat, showing off a perfect blow dry with her hair in a side parting and a huge red necklace on.

Rosie is seen lying back next to a takeaway pizza but we can't imagine she scoffed much of it, unless she's like Cara Delevingne, who seems to be able to eat loads of fast food and still have an amazing figure.

Hmmm meat feast pizza, anyway, back to Rosie...

We've had a sneak peak at the rest of the shoot and she's seen in other shots sucking on an ice lolly, showing off some serious cleavage and sitting on top of a washing machine looking all seductive.

The gazelle-like star appears on the front of the magazine in a classy dark red suit and huge gold necklace.

She would certainly turn heads if she walked into a Laundrette in London looking like that.

Red faced Home Ministry explains seizure

The release of the material would depend on the pastor involved proving that he had a scheduled flight to Sabah.

KUALA LUMPUR: Religious items including CDs seized last Sat at KLIA2 from a Christian pastor on the way home to Sabah from Medan, Northern Sumatra, will be released if certain conditions are met.

We are trying to ascertain if he was bringing it to Semenanjung or taking it to Sabah and if hes on transit, why was it (the material) in the main terminal? asked Hashimah Nik Jaafar who heads the Home Ministrys Publications Control and Al-Quran Text Unit. We are trying to get verification from Customs and the person involved.

She was stressing in a media update that the Home Ministry doesnt confiscate Christian material if they are meant for Sabah and Sarawak. So we have to determine whether these books and CDs were really meant for Sabah and Sarawak or they were being brought into the peninsula, she added.

She explained that the procedures for import of Christian material into the peninsula and Borneo were different.

In the case of Borneo, theres no need to seek written approval from the Home Ministry.

For the peninsula, importers of such material would have to seek written approval from the Home Ministry. However, no such approval would be given. Instead, the Home Ministry would write back to say that a certain number of the materials can be brought in.

Revisiting the seizure last Sat, Hashimah belaboured the point that the release of the material would depend on the pastor involved proving that he had a scheduled flight to Sabah.

If the person was really taking the material to Sabah, he has to produce his air ticket. We would release the material to him when he was leaving KLIA, she claimed.

Maklin Masiau, the pastor at the centre of the storm, wrote in a FaceBook posting: Even though I pleaded with them not to seize my things with all kinds of concrete reasons, they were steadfast in seizing them. Their main reason for the seizure was that the books and the CDs contained the word Allah.

Yoenis Cespedes Future With Red Sox Not As Complicated As It Sounds

Cespedes recent switch to Jay Zs Roc Nation Sports turned heads, as did a New York Daily News report in which the writer cited a rift between the outfielder and Bostons coaching staff. But while the Red Sox have 99 problems going into this offseason, Cespedes aint one.

To say Cespedes changing agents will be instrumental in his departure from the Red Sox is silly. It might lessen the chances of Boston working out a contract extension with the Cuban slugger Jay Zs group landed Robinson Cano a 10-year, $240 million contract on the open market last offseason, so Cespedes could be inclined to test free agency next winter but it shouldnt be viewed as a game-changer in negotiations.

Cespedes positioned himself for a lucrative deal long before he switched agents. And the Red Sox, for what its worth, just settled on a seven-year, $72.5 million contract with fellow Cuban defector Rusney Castillo, who happens to be a Jay Z client.

Its far more reasonable to say Cespedes being on a different wavelength than the Red Soxs coaching staff will lead to his exodus, but manager John Farrell shot down the existence of any tension during a radio appearance Tuesday. Bostons new hitting coach, Chili Davis, also expressed his admiration for Cespedes during an introductory conference call last week. Davis coached Cespedes in Oakland.

Cespedes future or lack thereof in Boston instead is rooted in whether he makes sense from a personnel standpoint. If Cespedes is traded this offseason, it will be because general manager Ben Cherington decided to leverage one of his more valuable assets to improve the major league roster.

Cespedes, who is set to earn $10.5 million in 2015, has tremendous power, which is the most sought-after commodity in baseball these days. The Red Sox could choose to sell high based on demand, their abundance of outfielders and their dire need for starting pitching.

If, say, the Cincinnati Reds or New York Mets two teams positioned to deal pitching for offensive upgrades blew up Cheringtons phone with reasonable offers, hed certainly entertain the idea of trading Cespedes, even if the ideal scenario is to keep the bopper and acquire arms by some other means.

The Red Soxs lineup had a new look and feel once Cespedes was acquired from the Athletics in exchange for Jon Lester and Jonny Gomes. He added a dynamic the unit lacked middle-of-the-order pop, particularly in the clutch and looked like someone capable of providing adequate right-handed protection for David Ortiz, who, while still unbelievable, wont be around forever.

But there also were negatives, including Cespedes lackluster on-base percentage (.296 in 51 games), his inconsistent plate discipline and defensive lapses that were enough to make one question whether hell ever truly adapt to left field at Fenway Park.

Red Raiders victorious

LIHUE After battling all season long, the series between the Red Raider girls and the Warrior wahine reached a climax and a champion was crowned.

Kauai High Schools varsity girls volleyball team defeated Kapaa in straight sets at home in Mondays second round playoff game, 25-16, 25-19 and 25-23, to win the Kauai Interscholastic Federation title.

The girls did a really good job. Both teams played a really tough game, said Red Raiders head coach Dorene Matias. Our girls wanted it so badly. I told them, Play it like its your last game. I couldnt do any more, but they could. They played with all their heart.

After winning the first two sets, the Red Raiders (12-2 KIF, 5-1 second round, 2-0 playoff) found themselves in a 12-8 deficit in the final game. The action continued back and forth until Kauai fought back to tie it, 22-22.

Freshman Tia Takasakis ace gave the Red Raiders the lead for good en route to completing the sweep.

It was really close in the end. It could have gone either way, Matias said. I dont want to take anything away from Kapaa. Theyre tough ... I was up against a really good coaching squad, too, and a really good team.

Senior co-captain Harley Kaeo had six kills, including the game-winner in the second set, and two blocks.

This was our last chance as seniors. We got our stuff together from our last loss and decided this was going to be it might as well play our hearts out, Kaeo said. All the hard hours put in at practice, all the running that you hate but you got to do, it finally paid off.

Junior Adrienne Graycochea and senior Jondee Rivera each added five kills.

I feel that a weight has been lifted off our shoulders, Graycochea said. We talked more on the court, and we found the openings a lot better. It was just going great. It was going smooth for us.

Caps Insider: Capitals vs. Red Wings: Game 9 discussion thread

Wednesday night, Washington Capitals (4-2-2) return home for a primetime NBC matchup with Detroit (4-2-2), one of six at Verizon Center over their next eight, following a topsy-turvy western Canadian road trip that saw arguably their most complete victory of the season in Calgary and then a dud in Vancouver. Once again, Coach Barry Trotz rejiggered his line combinations, separating Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, promoting Andre Burakovsky to top-line center and quite possibly positioning Tom Wilson for his NHL season debut.

Defenseman Matt Niskanen, meanwhile, will play his 500th NHL game, on the seventh anniversary of his first NHL goal scored vs. San Jose while with Dallas. It was kind of a fluttering slap shot, Niskanen said. I dont know how the heck it went in. I was happy at the time.

Niskanen becomes the sixth Washington skater to reach the milestone, after Brooks Laich, Jason Chimera, Brooks Orpik, Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, but admitted it might get forgotten once the puck drops.

As far as games played, milestones go, its kind of a cool one, 500s probably that first big one, maybe, Niskanen said. But its not spectacular. Its not 500 points like Nickie had. It is cool. It means Ive been relatively healthy, had somewhat decent success in the league. Im happy with that, but theres still a game to be played.

Trotz will coach against Detroits Mike Babcock in a regular-season game for the 62nd time, all previously while helming the Nashville Predators. In discussing the Red Wings, Trotz lauded their 200-foot game, ability to funnel pucks toward the net and persistence in all three zones, traits he has hoped the Capitals could adopt during his tenure.

Yeah, you want to create a culture, Trotz said. It takes time. It doesnt happen over night. Theyve had 20 some years at it. I think the successful teams in this business have the same thought process. It starts with the draft, then youve got to build a culture. Once you have your corps, you play a certain way, then keep doing it over and over. You make tweaks, but for the most part theyre self-sustaining.

The Capitals will also be wearing purple warmup sweaters for the Hockey Fights Cancer campaign, and bothgoaltenders willsport custom-painted helmets for the occasion.

The lines, goaltending matchup, injuries and links are below. Thanks for reading and enjoy the Wednesday night hockey, one of two NHL games on the docket.

Obama, Red Cross see progress in Ebola battle

by Zoom Dosso

Monrovia (AFP) -- US President Barack Obama and the Red Cross have offered hope that the battle against the deadly West African Ebola outbreak is being won, amid a dramatic drop in bodies collected in Liberia's capital.

Obama on Tuesday hailed progress in the fight against the disease, which has already killed almost 5,000 people, but said Washington would remain "vigilant," and stressed that science, not fear, should guide the response to the virus.

The Red Cross aid group announced that its workers were picking up little more than a third of the late September peak of more than 300 bodies a week in and around Monrovia -- an indication, it said, that the outbreak was retreating.

The upbeat mood appeared at odds with the assessment of UN chief Ban Ki-moon, who warned at a crisis meeting in Ethiopia that the spread of the virus continued to outpace the response, while the head of the World Bank appealed for thousands more medics to join the fight.

The comments came a week after the World Health Organization (WHO) concluded that Ebola transmission "remains intense" in the capitals of Liberia and neighbouring Guinea and Sierra Leone.

WHO assistant director-general Bruce Aylward will on Wednesday give an update on the UN agency's response to the outbreak .

Obama said the disease "can be contained" and vowed: "It will be defeated."

Citing a phone conversation with members of a US team dispatched to help combat Ebola, Obama said "the good news is that it's starting to have an impact."

"They're starting to see some progress in Liberia, and the infrastructure is beginning to get built out," he said.

MLS Preview: Wounded Sporting must bounce back

28 October 2014 02:42

Reigning MLS Cup champions Sporting Kansas City will limp into Thursday's knockout play-off match away to New York Red Bulls.

Sporting have three players on their long-term injury list, while four others are in doubt for the trip to New York, after the title-holders played three games in eight days last week.

United States international defender Matt Besler (thigh), goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum (calf), midfielder Benny Feilhaber (ankle) and defender Igor Juliao (hamstring) will need to prove their fitness to be involved against the Red Bulls.

Ironically enough, Sporting ended their regular season with a home game against New York on Sunday, suffering their third straight loss in all competitions after a brace from Red Bulls striker Bradley Wright-Phillips, who heads into the play-offs with 27 goals this term - the most in the MLS.

Prior to the loss to the Red Bulls, Sporting went down in Costa Rica to Deportivo Saprissa 2-0 in the CONCACAF Champions League on Thursday to miss out on the knockout rounds in that competition, while they also suffered defeat at Philadelphia Union in the MLS on October 18.

Sunday's loss saw Kansas City drop from third to fifth in the Eastern Conference with the Red Bulls (fourth) and Columbus Crew (third) winning to leapfrog Sporting in the standings.

That means Sporting missed out on a week off to begin the play-offs but coach Peter Vermes is not focused on that.

"Our mindset has to be on getting recovered," he said after the loss to New York.

"The difficulty we have at the moment is that we've played a boatload of games with a squad that's already been depleted, and we keep trying to plug holes, and it hasn't been easy."

Obama will avoid red states on campaign trail

WASHINGTON President Obama is finally hitting the campaign trail this week, but hes not straying far from his base.

With just a week until the midterm elections, the unpopular president wont dare tread in red states where Senate Democratic candidates are in trouble. Hes also steering clear of key House contests, opting instead for a New England-heavy tour that could be confused with leaf-peeping rather than campaigning.

Obama heads to Milwaukee on Tuesday for a DNC fund-raiser and an event with Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mary Burke. Hell visit a high school in a mostly African-American ward that he won with 99 percent of the vote.

On Thursday, the president will raise cash for Democrats in Maine and campaign for former Rep. Mike Michaud in his gubernatorial bid.

He will later a speech on the economy in Rhode Island. Not until Saturday in Detroit will Obama engage in a Senate contest, when he campaigns for Democratic Rep. Gary Peters in his bid to keep an open seat in Democratic hands. Hell also stump for Mark Schauer, a candidate for governor.

Obama will also campaign in Philadelphia and on Sunday in Connecticut with Gov. Dan Malloy.

The presidents average winning percentage from 2012 in the states hes visiting is a healthy 14 points. His carefully calculated campaigning in blue states comes as a host of new polls show a fierce battle for the Senate and movement toward Republicans.

The latest Marist / NBC polls show North Carolina Sen. Kay Hagan in a dead heat with Republican state House speaker Tom Tillis. Democratic Sen. Mark Udall trails challenger Cory Gardner by a single point in Colorado, and Sen. Mark Pryor trails Republican Tom Cotton 45-43 percent in Arkansas.

Obama is passing on those contests, along with the one in Georgia, where Democrat Michelle Nunn is in a tight race and where big African-American turnout could make a difference.

The political calculus is obvious: Obamas approval rating was 40 percent or less in each of the states surveyed in the latest Marist poll.

Wings great Gordie Howe resting after stroke

Detroit Red Wings great Gordie Howe is resting after suffering a stroke over the weekend. (USATSI)

Gordie Howe, one of the NHL's all-time greatest players, is resting at his daughter's home in Lubbock, Texas after suffering a serious stroke on Sunday according to his son, Dr. Murray Howe, via a report from Gregg Krupa of the Detroit News.

According to the report, Howe, who turned 86 last March, has lost some function on the right side of his body and is having a difficult time speaking.

From the Detroit News:

"Basically, sometime in the early morning on Sunday he suffered a pretty bad stroke," said Howe, who heads the department of radiology at Toledo Hospital.

"The right side of his body is very, very weak. He's unable to stand without help. He's able to speak, but very, very difficult to speak.

"He knows who he is. He knows the people around him. But it is very difficult for him to get up and walk around. So he is pretty much confined to his bed right now. So we're just trying to keep him comfortable, and that's our goal."

Howe played 31 seasons professionally in a career that touched five different decades (the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and a few months in 1980) in both the NHL and WHA.

During his NHL career, which was spent almost entirely with the Detroit Red Wings minus one year with the Hartford Whalers when he was 51 years old, Howe scored 801 goals, second only to Wayne Gretzky, and recorded 1,850 points, third behind only Gretzky and Mark Messier.

He was a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame class of 1972 and during his time with the Red Wings was the foundation of four Stanley Cup winning teams in 1949-50, 1951-52, 1953-54 and 1954-55.

Motorsport: Van Gisbergen in hot form for Hampton Downs

Shane Van Gisbergen is in red-hot form as he heads to this weekends TR Group Waikato 400 at Hampton Downs, round two of the 2014-15 BNT NZ SuperTourers championship, Nov 1-2.

Van Gisbergen teamed up with his old friend and fellow Aucklander, Simon Evans, to dominate the first round of the championship at Taupo in September, and they start as clear favourites for the second endurance round in Evans Holden.

In between the two New Zealand events Van Gisbergen again showed his great speed and car control on Australasias main V8 stage, the 1000km race on the Mount Panorama circuit at Bathurst and the Gold Coast 600 over the weekend - where he achieved a pole position and race win.

At Bathurst he qualified on pole, broke the lap record and was leading near the end - till the final pit-stop, when his Holden stalled and would not restart because of a starter motor failure. After losing three laps, he finished 16th but retained fourth place in the V8 Supercar championship.

"We had a fantastic car at the end, so Im pretty gutted really," he said after the race.

And Evans is now one of the top resident Kiwi drivers, as he proved when he made the break that set up the duos victory in race one at Taupo, so the pair will be hard to beat.

But Van Gisbergen is not the only young Kiwi to make an impression at Bathurst. Hamiltons Ant Pedersen and Aucklander Andre Heimgartner, who stand second and third respectively in the New Zealand championship, were on course to finish sixth till they also hit a late setback, a miscalculation by the crew forcing them to stop for extra fuel right at the end.

In the BNT NZ SuperTourers endurance rounds, Pedersen shares his Ford with former A1GP hero Jonny Reid while Heimgartners co-driver for his Holden is Aussie veteran Paul Morris, who won Bathurst with Chaz Mostert.

Reigning champion Greg Murphy needs to get back to the top of the podium as he and Aussie Jack Perkins failed to finish the first race at Taupo, their Holden damaged by contact with another car. Murphy and James Courtney, racing for the Holden Racing Team, had finished second in the Sandown 500, the lead-up event for Bathurst, but setbacks in the big race left them 13th at the end.

More Australian V8 Supercar drivers join the fray with Cameron Waters (co-driving with Mitch Cunningham), Steve Owen (Tim Edgell), Tony DAlberto (Angus Fogg) and Dale Wood (Dominic Storey) all crossing the Tasman for the weekend.
