Charlie Hall Chase Entries Wetherby 2019 | Reigning champ Definitly Red heads Charlie Hall entries – Timeform

Last year's winner Definitly Red will face a maximum of 11 rivals when he defends his crown in the bet365 Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby.

Brian Ellison's stable stalwart got the better of the Paul Nicholls-trained Black Corton by two lengths in the West Yorkshire highlight 12 months ago - and the pair look set to renew rivalry on Saturday.

Ellison will be buoyed by the fantastic recent form of his jumping string, with Forest Bihan's big-race triumph in Sunday's Old Roan Chase at Aintree the trainer's eighth winner from his last nine runners under National Hunt rules.

Black Corton - last seen filling the runner-up spot under a big weight in the Galway Plate - is out to provide Nicholls with a fourth Charlie Hall success following the back-to-back wins of See More Business (1999 and 2000) and the victory of Silviniaco Conti (2012).

Nigel Twiston-Davies has not entered the 2017 Charlie Hall hero Bristol De Mai, but could saddle recent Chepstow winner Ballyoptic. The Naunton handler has also won this prestigious event with Tipping Tim (1992), Young Hustler (1994) and Ollie Magern (2005 and 2007).

Warren Greatrex is expected to send star mare La Bague Au Roi from Lambourn, while Jessica Harrington's Jett could bid to become the first Irish-trained winner since Sackville in 2001.

Aso (Venetia Williams), Atlanta Ablaze (Henry Daly), Double Shuffle (Tom George), Elegant Escape (Colin Tizzard), Molly The Dolly (Dan Skelton), Top Ville Ben (Phil Kirby) and Vinndication (Kim Bailey) are the other contenders.

Redheads Converge in Wheeling for Festival of Their Own – Wheeling Intelligencer

Photos by Robert A. DeFrankJessica Benson of Columbus, left, watches as a clown makes balloon animals for a fellow redhead at the YWCAs first redhead festival Saturday.

WHEELING A crop of carrot-tops crowded the second floor of the YWCA in Wheeling on Saturday for the first Ohio Valley Redhead Festival.

Ron Scott Jr., cultural diversity and community director, said there was some excitement for the event. Unfortunately, though, several vendors were unable to attend as planned.

This is the first one of its kind around here, Scott said. I like to showcase and highlight different demographics and cultural groups that I feel arent getting really enough recognition or any shine, and the redhead community I found out, they have these festivals all over the country.

Scott said the closest was in Dunbar, West Virginia.

Scott said one goal is to raise awareness of skin cancer, which fair-skinned redheads are prone to. He said all donations given at the festival will go to anti-bullying programs to target bullying directed at redheaded children and adolescents.

Scott said Ohio Valley Dermatology set up a table. Scott also attempted to secure anesthesiologists to talk about the effects of pain medication on redheads. According to a study from the Cleveland Clinic, redheads are more resistant to general and local anesthesia.

They couldnt make it, unfortunately, but they had sent some information. The American Cancer Society sent some information as well, he said.

However, attendance of the communitys redheads was strong with close to 80 people arriving throughout the day.

Its been really amazing so far. Ive learned so much about the redhead community just by meeting people and organizing this event, he said.

There are some differences genetically, but in essence theyre the same person, and that difference has to be looked at as a uniqueness instead of something that you shy away from. Its just another cool thing about a group of people instead of something that keeps it separate.

Many redheaded mothers brought their children to the celebration, including Becky Lanham of Beech Bottom.

I heard about the event. I actually work for the Y and thought my kids would enjoy it, she said. Theyre talking about genetics and how we get some of our traits from our parents, our grandparents. This is the first time Ive ever heard of a redhead festival, but there are signs posted all over Wheeling.

We drove in from Columbus for it, Jessica Benson said, adding that she and her family were visiting a local relative. She brought a group of her redheaded children along.

We have two little redheads and Im a redhead myself, so when we saw what was going on we were really excited, Valerie Piko of Wheeling said. I always felt really special being a redhead, and when we found out I was expecting, we really didnt care what the genders were, we just really wanted a redhead and we ended up with two.

Entertainment included a clown and music. Libby Strong of SMART Centre Market also gave a scientific presentation on inherited traits and protection from ultraviolet light. She said it was possible to be sunburned even during cloudy weather.

There are traits that you inherit from your parents, and also some traits that also come about from different environmental factors, she said. Whether you can roll your tongue and whether you have a hitchhikers thumb red hairs kind of a similar sort of thing.

Ive worked with the YWCA on a couple of projects, and I think everything they do here is wonderful, Erika Donaghy of Wheeling said.

The YWCA also gave awards for the most freckles and to the redheads who traveled farthest.

The Scomas say they get a lot of people driving by, just taking pictures leading up to Halloween night.

Michele Scoma, who created the idea of the impressive Halloween house, calls her husband, Mike, the "structural engineer," who makes all of her creative ideas sound. Her kids help with painting props and set up each year.

"Yeah, it's a passion. I'm a very creative person. If I'm not creating, I'm antsy. I love to make things, so Halloween really lets my imagination go crazy. I can do whatever I want. I feel like I can express myself with Halloween and do things," said Michele Scoma. "We start before the first holiday. Weve already planned like a month ago what next year is going to be already. I do like hitting the stores after Halloween and get things half price. It takes a full year of planning to do what Im going to do."

One of the questions the Scomas get every year, is do they do it this big for Christmas. That answer, is no. Halloween is the major holiday for the family.

More than 250 trick-or-treaters show up at their front door every year.

‘Bryce Strong’: Judson community rallies as football player heads for round two with cancer – San Antonio Express-News

October 31, 2019

Bryce Wisdom hoists an orange flag emblazoned with the white letters that have come to define the Judson football season and his life.

Bryce Strong.

The schools drum line taps out an upbeat rhythm, rat-a-tat-tat, rat-a-tat-tat, rat-a-tat-tat.

Holding orange balloons, Bryces classmates some he knows well, others hes never met watch from the second floor, waiting to drop them once Bryce starts his march down the red and white hallway at Judson High School.

Nick Talbot is the sports editor of the San Antonio Express-News. He graduated from the University of Florida with a masters degree in sports management and a bachelors in journalism. He was previously the sports editor of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. He is a kidney cancer survivor.

Even though Judson was set to play at New Braunfels later that night, this isnt a pep rally. Its a sendoff for a friend, a classmate and a teammate.

Its Oct. 11, the last day Bryce will probably be able to attend during his junior year. As he prepares to fight a battle he thought hed already won, hes defiant. Cancer isnt going to beat him no matter how many times he is forced to go through chemotherapy.

Hes already lost too much.

A kidney. Part of his liver. His chance at playing college football like his brother Rashad Wisdom, a starting freshman safety for University of Texas at San Antonio.

Bryce is determined not to lose anymore.

As he begins walking down the hallway, his mother, Diana Wisdom, wipes away tears. Teachers and classmates reach out to hug him. The gathered crowd, dressed in orange to raise awareness for kidney cancer, drops the balloons and erupts in cheers and applause. More than 30 Judson High School students follow Bryce as he make the more than two-minute walk to the schools double doors.

Bryce plants the flag in the grass outside and the students begin to chant, Bryce Strong, Bryce Strong, Bryce Strong.

Bryce Wisdom, a student athlete at Judson High School who is fighting cancer, is embraced during a rally to encourage him on Friday, Oct. 11, 2019. He is leaving school to undergo 25 weeks of chemotherapy.

Bryce Wisdom, a Judson High School student athlete who is fighting cancer, walks with his parents, Rich and Diana Wisdom, during a rally to encourage him on Friday, Oct. 11, 2019. He is leaving school to undergo 25 weeks of chemotherapy.

Round 1

At first, Bryce thought nothing of it. He was an athlete. A cornerback for Judson, he had taken and given his fair share of hits on the football field during his sophomore year.

The pain in his lower back would pass. And with some ibuprofen, it eventually did.

Then came the blood.

When it first happened, I was like Oh, I was working out hard. That must be why. Ive heard that can happen. Then it happened again, and I was like I dont think this is normal, Bryce said.

When it happened a third time, he texted his mother, Mom I have blood in my urine.

She took him out of school and to the emergency room. The hospital ran an MRI. Thirty minutes later, the doctors returned.

When they came back, we could tell something was wrong, Diana said.

Her intuition was right. Bryce had a tumor in his right kidney.

There are days you sit in the shower, cry and wonder, Why?

Diana Wisdom, Bryce's mother

As soon as she heard the word oncologist, Diana couldnt stay in the room any longer. She went to the hallway and broke down. She didnt want Bryce to see her overcome with grief.

You go through so many emotions in like one second; you are angry, mad, sad, Diana said. It was just horrible.

Bryce didnt cry until he got home later that day. When he did, Sean, the eldest of the four Wisdom brothers, put the challenge ahead into a perspective Bryce understood football.

He told him, You know its like football. We are going to have our opponent, and we are going to know how to kick their butt, and this is what we are going to do, Diana said. He did some research and told Bryce that there was a 99 percent survival rate and it is going to be OK. Dont pay attention to mom, she cries when you get a splinter.

Diana Wisdom wipes a tear as she stands by her husband, Rich Wisdom, during a gathering at Judson High School for their son, Bryce.

This was no splinter. It was a Wilms tumor. About 500 new cases of Wilms tumors are found each year in the United States, affecting about 1 in every 10,000 children.

Wilms tumor, a solid cancerous growth of the kidney that arises from immature kidney cells, most often affects children who are 3 to 4 years old. Its much less common after age 5 making Bryces case even more unusual.

Wilms tumors also dont usually spread.

She (the doctor) just said Wilms tumor, and we had no idea what that was, Diana said.

The Wisdoms got up to speed fast.

The MRI was Wednesday. The family visited the oncologist Friday. On the following Tuesday, March 26, doctors removed Bryces right kidney.

At first, I was freaking out because I didnt know you could just take an organ out, a kidney out, and nothing would happen, Bryce said. But then they told me, You can live with just one kidney. But I was still scared for the surgery because it is a big one, and I knew it was going to be dangerous. So I was worried.

Nineteen weeks of treatment, including 11 of chemotherapy, followed. Some weeks were better than others. Often Bryce would come home from his treatments and go straight to sleep. Other times he woke up in the middle of the night and vomited.

He lost 25 pounds, got used to wearing a do-rag as his hair fell out and accepted he would never play football again.

It was a long five months.

Watching him suffer, the sores in his mouth, the nausea. Those are the sides of cancer not everyone sees, Diana said. We clean the vomit and we put him back in the bed. Sometimes the nights are hard, and we are crying, too. There are days you sit in the shower, cry and wonder, Why?

Still, there was plenty of reason to be optimistic. Over the years, advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of Wilms tumors have improved the prognosis for children with the disease, according to the American Cancer Society. The survival rate for a Stage 2 Wilms tumor is between 95 and 100 percent.

On Aug. 23, Bryce believed his battle with cancer was over. He walked into Methodist Children's Hospitals Childrens Cancer and Blood Center with family and friends behind him, waving streamers and carrying congratulatory balloons.

As they cheered him on, he rang the bell on the wall to celebrate the end of his treatment.

We were thrilled, Diana said. I thought we would be able to slow down on all the appointments. There was just one more scan to do.

The scan, taken only 19 days after he rang that bell, showed another tumor.

This time on his liver.

Cancer patient Bryce and his mother, Diana Wisdom, watch as nurse Gloria Muniz prepares to administer chemotherapy drugs.

Never alone

In early September, Diana needed to add lunch money to Bryces school account.

It hit me do I do it for the week, a few days, a month? You dont know, she said. Everything is really just out of your control.

It was one more little thing to consider as the family learned to live from diagnosis to diagnosis.

On Sept. 17, Bryce had surgery to remove a portion of his liver. More scans followed and the Wisdoms were left with more questions than answers as they waited for the pathology report to determine if Bryce would require further treatment.

You go to the hospital and you see 6- and 7-year-old kids going through the same thing, and you wonder what happened, said Bryces father, Richard Wisdom. How did this happen? You expect people my age or older because you have been through a lot of things.

He is a football player and is athletic and it is like, why him? So much goes through your mind.

When Bryce got out of his liver surgery, the first thing he did was ask for his brothers, Rashad, Myles and Sean. Rashad, who was in the middle of class at UTSA, left and went to the hospital. Sean arrived shortly after.

Their main question was, Is he going to die? And we told them that was not the plan. And they said, Then we are good, Diana said. Then when they got there, they had their own conversation and the next thing I knew, Bryce was good.

Myles, 11, is mostly upset he cant wrestle with Bryce anymore. Rashad focuses on his studies and football.

Rashad Wisdom, who plays defense for UTSA, looks into the stands during a game attended by his younger brother Bryce, who is battling cancer.

What Rashad deals with on a daily basis of being a student-athlete, a big brother, a great teammate, I could not even justly put in words, UTSA coach Frank Wilson said. I just commend him and love what he and his family stand for; both Richard and Diana, his parents, and how theyve raised their sons. Its a beautiful thing.

When he visited Bryce in the hospital, Judson assistant coach Quinton Green could see the pain on his face after the medicine would wear off. Green, who was one of Seans teammates with the Rockets and would hang out after practices at the Wisdoms house, was almost like another older brother to Bryce.

I know I am his coach and all; but at the end of the day I feel like his brother, and it was just like seeing one of my family members going through it, Green said. I have never seen him in that light. He is usually a kid who is smiling all the time.

Now, I just dont want him to think he is ever going through this alone.

Judson junior Bryce speaks with friends before leaving school to undergo 25 weeks of chemotherapy.

Becoming Bryce Strong

There are four bracelets on Dianas right wrist: a black one with an orange kidney cancer awareness ribbon in its center, an orange one that has Bryce Strong stamped into it, a silver and orange beaded bracelet with two charms on it both in support of her son and a yellow hospital band.

The collection is a small fraction of what she has done to rally community awareness.

Pediatric cancer is here, and it doesnt discriminate, Diana said. This is just starting a conversation. Bryces story lets these kids know if they see something that doesnt seem right to say something, to tell their parents.

We were lucky. We caught it early. It was only Stage 2, and we caught it because he said something, and that is the message we want to put out there.

That message began with a gift from an outgoing coach.

Before Sean McAuliffe left in April for Cypress Ranch after leading the Rockets to two state semifinals, he ordered orange T-shirts with the words, Bryce Strong printed across the front.

Bryce Wisdom's mother, Diane, wears jewelry and assorted bracelets showing her support for him. The color orange is worn to raise awareness for kidney cancer. (Photo: Billy Calzada)

Jason Wagner, the outside linebackers coach over there, is notorious for slogans and stuff we could put on shirts, and he was like We need to get shirts made up. I was like, Thats a hell of an idea, and it went from there, McAuliffe said. It is a unique story that I believe is going to have a good ending.

When the community learned Bryces cancer had spread to his liver, it rallied around the Wisdoms, raising more than $14,000 for their GoFundMe account, set up to help with the medical bills. Diana said anything left over will go to help pediatric cancer research.

Even other teams showed their support for Bryce. When Steele Judsons biggest rival hosted the Rockets, its cheerleaders lined up and held a sign that read #BryceStrong. Knights fans in attendance did the same. And when the Steele football team broke through its banner onto the field it read, No one fights alone. United we stand.

They cant know how much it means to us, Diana said. It is hard enough to go to the games knowing Bryce cant play. But to see the other teams wearing orange bands and to see their cheerleaders with orange on and the signs up it is amazing and appreciated.

Before UTSA footballs season opener against Incarnate Word, Bryce stood at midfield for the coin toss. And despite the diagnosis that followed a month later, he watched from the stands as his brother played against the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

It was a beautiful sight to see him as we came through the spirit walk, Wilson said. He waited at the end and (we) got a big hug for him and had a few words with him. And now as he gets ready to combat (the disease) with his treatment, certainly our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

Talk show hosts Ellen DeGeneres and Kelly Clarkson have taken notice of the #BryceStrong movement, too.

DeGeneres tweeted at Diana after seeing a clip of Bryces sendoff at Judson, I am marching with you in my living room.

And in November, the Kelly Clarkson Show is expected to broadcast an interview with Judson ISD Superintendent Jeanette Ball and Judson High School Principal Jesus Hernandez.

Bryce has tried his best to shy away from the attention.

He loves it, but he doesnt want to be known as the cancer kid, Green said. He wants to be known as Bryce Wisdom, the football player and student athlete. I just tell him, You are getting a lot of love from people because they know the type of kid you are. Just embrace it and enjoy the fact that people care for you.

Thats the reason why Bryce was insistent on making the trip to New Braunfels with the Rockets after his sendoff.

No, he cant play anymore. The chemotherapy treatments sapped his strength, whittling 25 pounds off his already small frame.

Still, he pleaded with his mother, Diana, and his coaches to let him watch from the sideline. They countered by making sure he had a spot in the press box.

A cold front eventually put an end to even those plans. The trip was deemed too strenuous for a 16-year-old who was less than a week away from, once again, battling cancer.

It was just like getting punched in the stomach when he got this latest diagnosis. He is a great kid and comes from good, supportive family, Judson coach Rodney Williams said. He is one of those kids where you see his size and you think, There isnt any way. And then you get him on the field, and he will bite your leg off.

Judson Rockets represent their teammate Bryce Wisdom, who is battling Wilms Tumor, an aggressive form of kidney cancer

The Converse community shows their support with #BryceStrong placards for 16-year-old Bryce Wisdom during a Sept. 20 football game against Cibolo Steele. Bryce Wisdom, who is a member of the Judson Rockets, is battling kidney cancer.

Round 2

On the table in front of Bryce is an empty bag of SunChips, a wooden plaque he painted with the message BryceStrong #39 and three needles.

Soon, a respirator mask that looks like it was ripped from the pages of a comic book will cover the bottom half of his face as a bright red liquid, nicknamed the Red Devil, enters his veins through an IV.

He reaches for a piece of spearmint gum in preparation. It helps reduce the taste of metal in his mouth once the chemotherapy drugs start flowing into his body.

The first time around, Bryce was given two of the less intensive chemotherapy drugs. This round, though, will require three to four separate drugs, each with a higher toxicity profile than prior treatments, said Bryces oncologist, Dr. Jose Esquilin.

They have much higher side effects, and the impact on him is going to be much greater, Esquilin said. He is going to be tired. He is probably going to need transfusions, and he is going to lose his hair, his eyelashes, eyebrows and some more weight.

I am going to be watching and trying to minimize that, but we are definitely in a different situation.

Diana Wisdom cheers her son, Bryce, as he receives a chemotherapy treatment from nurse Gloria Muniz.

Verstappen: Hamilton and Vettel words show I’m in their heads – autosport.com

Red Bull's Max Verstappen says Lewis Hamilton's comments echoed by Sebastian Vettel about Verstappen's aggressive Formula 1 style after Mexico is a positive, because it shows he's "in their heads".

Hamilton and Verstappen were involved an on-track scuffle through the opening sequence of corners in the Mexican Grand Prix.

Verstappen's race was later compromised for a clash with Hamilton's Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas on lap five of 71.

Having gone on to win the race, Hamilton quipped afterwards that he had been "torpedoed" by Verstappen at Turn 1 - and said that the Dutchman's aggressive style meant that drivers like Hamilton give Verstappen "extra space" in wheel-to-wheel racing.

He also described Verstappen as a "magnet" for incidents, while Ferrari driver Vettel then said he completely agreed with Hamilton's viewpoint.

In the lead-up to next weekend's United States Grand Prix, Verstappen questioned Hamilton's view of the Mexico battle, before adding: "I think from my side it was a bit of a silly comment to make - because I think I'm always a hard racer, but fair.

"I think it's just not correct.

"But of course it's easy to have a dig at someone.

"From my side, it's fine.

"It's always positive when they talk about you because that means you're in their heads.

"I just focus on my driving, and I think that's enough said."

Asked what he made of being singled out by his F1 rivals, Verstappen reiterated: "I think that from my side it already shows that I'm in their heads.

"I guess that's a good thing.

"But from our side, I don't need to dig into other people in a press conference, because first of all I think it's a bit disrespectful as well, and I prefer to fight on track, which I love to do.

"And of course I like to fight hard, but on the edge, otherwise - if they want me to stay behind, it's also better to stay at home.

"You want to take the fight to them, because that's what we are here for, we are racers, we are Formula 1, I think we are the best out there, and we do fight for victories because that's what I live for."

Verstappen had lost pole for the Mexican GP after the stewards assessed he did not slow sufficiently for yellow flags on his second flying lap.

The Red Bull driver, maintaining that he only saw the Bottas crash that brought out the yellow flag and not the flag itself - repeated that he felt the stewards had been "very fair" in awarding him the penalty.

"In hindsight I also didn't need to go for that laptime, because I was already on pole position," he said.

"What was going through my head through that lap was, you don't know what the other guys are doing, if they are improving, are they beating your pole laptime.

"So, I didn't see the yellow flag, I improved my laptime, in hindsight I didn't need to do it, but also in hindsight I think next time I am anyway going to lift even if they would improve [on] my laptime just because they got lucky they were in front of the accident.

"It is what it is, but of course at the moment we are still not in a position to fight for pole position all the time, so of course I was enjoying the moment as well."

Confessed killer regrets life of drug use as he heads to prison for murder – MLive.com

ANN ARBOR, MI Joseph Jonathan Starr doesnt like the man he was a year ago.

An admitted frequent user of alcohol and illicit drugs in 2018, Starr said he regretted the choices he made that led him to picking up a rock and hitting Ray Anthony Mason in a fit of rage, killing him.

If I wasnt on drugs and alcohol that night, it would have been different, Starr said, as he held back tears during his Thursday, Oct. 31 sentencing. I cant take any of this back and Im sorry.

For Masons death, Washtenaw County Trial Judge Darlene OBrien sentenced Starr to 28 to 55 years in prison.

Starr, 28, pleaded guilty, Oct. 10, to one count of second-degree murder after previously rejecting a similar offer.

Mason, 58, of Ypsilanti Township, was found dead, Sept. 18, 2018, by a pair of men fishing along the Huron River near Frog Island Park, according to the Washtenaw County Sheriffs Office.

Initially, police said no foul play was suspected, but Masons death was later ruled a homicide and Starr was charged and arraigned.

(Police) investigated this case thoroughly, interviewing everyone who ever met Mason and not a single person could come up with a reason why anyone would harm him, Assistant Prosecuting Attorney John Vella said.

Vella found it tragic that Starr, a stranger to Mason, would have a run-in with Mason and kill him.

Starr underwent a lengthy mental evaluation at the states Center for Forensic Psychiatry where he was eventually found competent to stand trial.

Two of Masons siblings drove from their homes in North Carolina to the sentencing and spoke of their grief, still questioning why anyone would willingly hurt their brother.

(Starr) took somebody real special from me and I want to understand why, Masons sister, Marshanne Mason said. It hurts real bad. He would have done anything for anyone. Why did you do this?

His eyes puffy and red, Starr silently cried as he listened to Masons family tell the court how good of a man Mason was.

Ray was a good man who raised four kids who were not his own, his brother Martin Mason said. Ray was better than all of us. You better believe he had a family, Starr. I pray you get your life together.

As part of his sentencing, Starr was ordered to pay $5,000 in restitution to Masons family. Starr was credited for 408 days served.

Donor conception and the cost of keeping a secret – Science News – ABC News

Even as a child, Matty suspected something was not quite as it seemed.

"I can remember looking at family photos and wondering where I got my red hair and freckles from."

Parents Eveline and Tony always seemed to have answers.

But when Matty turned 18, Mum and Dad finally revealed the truth about how their two children Matty and younger sister Beth were conceived.

And Matty has struggled with the legacy of their choices ever since.

When 27-year-old Eveline held newborn Matty in her arms for the first time in 1984, it felt like the most amazing moment of her life.

Her then-husband Tony was infertile, so the Perth-based couple had sought out a doctor to help them conceive using donated sperm.

They both saw it as a chance to create the family they wanted but Catholic-raised Eveline struggled with whether the decision to use the anonymously donated sperm was the right thing to do.

"I was really ambivalent because I very much am not a Catholic, or religious, and wasn't really then, but it still obviously had that bit of a hold in my head," she says.

Science friction investigates vexed very personal stories involving assisted reproductive technologies.

Eveline was also worried about the possibility her children might have other siblings from the same biological father out there. And what if they met?

In the early 1980s, using donor sperm for conception was generally kept a secret, says Kate Bourne, a counsellor with the Victorian Assisted Reproductive Treatment Authority (VARTA).

The focus was on protecting the adults involved in the process from things like unwelcome child maintenance or estate claims down the track, and also avoiding the stigma associated with infertility.

"For a man to be diagnosed with male infertility was very, very difficult and emasculating," Kate says.

"We hear stories of couples saying the doctor even said, 'Go home, make love to your wife and we'll never really know who is the genetic father'. So it was very much the way things were done then."

Since 2005, anonymous sperm donation is no longer considered acceptable practice in Australia, but it is still very common in some places.

Back in 1983, Eveline didn't give much thought to the sperm donor's identity or that not knowing it would cause problems for her children later on.

"I just accepted it I didn't need to know."

But that was something she later came to regret.

A couple of years after Matty was born Eveline and Tony had Beth, using sperm from a different anonymous donor.

As their children grew older, Eveline wrestled with when to tell them they were donor conceived, but it never seemed to be the right time.

Matty and sister Beth were both donor conceived, using sperm from different men.

Tony was reluctant to reveal he wasn't Matty's biological father, fearing rejection, and he says he wanted to leave it until the children were old enough to understand.

"I think if you tell a six-year-old or an eight-year-old they might rebel there might be heartache."

It wasn't until Matty was about to leave home to start university that Eveline and Tony called a family meeting to explain their children's origins to them.

Matty remembers that "family chat" well.

"My parents were scared. And I was angry."

Incredibly though, despite having visceral feelings on the inside, Matty didn't show them at the time, having more concern for Eveline and Tony's feelings.

"I told them, 'It's fine. You've always been here for us. And this won't change anything.'"

But things weren't fine.

"I was feeling that anger and betrayal I felt like I'd been deceived for 18 years."

VARTA counsellor Kate runs workshops for donor-conceived people and their families, and understands the effect this kind of experience can have.

"The impact is often about a lack of trust and the impact on your identity," she says.

"You think that you know who you are and then suddenly the foundation stone from that is different so it results in having to sort of review your identity."

Matty was especially upset the sperm donor was anonymous, suggesting that tracking down a biological father would be impossible.

Now 35 years old and living in Hobart, Matty understands why Eveline and Tony were reluctant to disclose, but still finds it hard to deal with.

"Back when I was conceived in '83, parents were often counselled to not disclose because it would make their lives easier It didn't make our lives easier."

One of the hardest things for Matty, who uses the gender-neutral pronoun "they", to reconcile is the way their parents had skirted around the truth.

They remember asking at five or six: "Is Dad my real dad?"

"Yeah, he's your father," came the response, and Matty's red hair was explained away by pointing to other redheads in their extended family or the red tints in Eveline's hair.

Eveline accepts that Matty now sees this as a case of being lied to.

"Even when I asked questions directly, the whole truth hadn't been said. And it took a long time to process that," Matty says.

Eveline has worked hard to understand Matty's distress, and done what she can to help her children deal with the consequences of finding out they are donor conceived.

Matty's father, now separated from Eveline, is sorry for Matty's struggle, but doesn't see how things could have been done differently.

"I don't regret telling Matty and Beth at that age," he says.

"I don't think we were lying to them. I think we were honest with them and telling them at an appropriate time in their lives."

Traditionally, donor-conceived children and adopted children were thought of differently by health services.

When Matty was born, there was a push to tell adopted children their biological origins while they were still young. It was understood that this was better for their development, sense of identity, and wellbeing in the long-term.

But this approach wasn't applied to donor-conceived children.

"I don't think people really thought about the person conceived from the donation treatment and what their needs might be," Kate says.

But finding out in adulthood that you are donor conceived risks a loss of trust in your parents, and in your own sense of self.

"The recommendation has gone from medical staff encouraging not to tell, to actually encouraging parents to tell," Kate says.

Kate says research suggests it is best to tell children they are donor conceived before puberty.

"It's better to start the conversation while the child is very young so that they can't ever really remember a time where they didn't know."

"This is just part of who they are. And part of their family's story."

It hasn't been an easy road for Matty's family.

Tony had been reluctant to talk about the topic, Matty says.

Five or six years ago Matty's anger forced the issue.

"I said [to Dad] something like 'Dad we're not father and child here, we're something else.' And he said 'What? Like super friends?' And that's when things changed for us.

"We could build a relationship based on the truth."

Matty now feels they can more fully celebrate what they have, and Tony's loving role in Matty's life.

"The special relationship between a father who's brought you up without having a biological connection, and has always been there, is a really special one. And that became a point of pride for my dad."

Tony and baby Matty.

(Supplied: Eveline Durkin)

Matty's relationship with mum Eveline after the revelation has been more open, but in some ways harder.

Despite the relief of sharing the news, Eveline gets very emotional every time she talks about it.

"She's seen the pain and the anguish the decision not to disclose has caused and the separation from kin has caused," Matty says.

Eveline says there is "a lot of guilt and a lot of regret" that it wasn't done differently.

"It's a work in progress for all of us and it probably always will be," she says.

However the family has reached a level of acceptance and peace.

Matty still holds some anger mainly at a society that supported non-disclosure and has placed so much weight on having your own children.

"I think a lot of people believe that if you're unable to have a child of your own, that makes you somehow less than other people. And so those pressures also were part of my parents' decision."

For Matty the cost of secrecy has been clear.

"I've lost 30-odd years of being able to grow, knowing where I've come from and that's not something that I can ever get back."

Kate says she regularly hears of people accidentally discovering they were donor conceived.

"I've had quite a few clients where they've been given [a DNA ancestry] testing kit for Christmas or for a birthday and suddenly they've discovered that their dad isn't their biological father."

"People say they would much rather find out from their mum and dad than from a test."

Matty's sister Beth is now an activist for donor-conceived people in Perth.

(ABC News: Rhiannon Shine)

Matty's sister Beth is now an activist for donor-conceived people in Perth.

Kate stresses it is never too late to share the truth.

"It's about thinking about how to do that in a loving and supportive way."

She runs a seminar that helps families with this process, and VARTA provides resources for donor-conceived people and their families.

"It should be a very proud story to be told and not a dirty little secret."

Around a year ago, after a long and complex process, involving DNA testing and searching on social media, Matty connected with their biological father, Alan.

"We just started sort of talking on Facebook and it was surreal," Matty says.

The first time Matty saw a picture of Alan, the physical resemblance was obvious, and then they found out Alan studied engineering.

A young Matty and family.

This "put a lot of pieces into place", says Matty, who as a child used to pull their toys apart instead of playing with them.

"We share a sense of humour and we also share a fervour for robust discussion," Matty adds.

But feeling a connection to a stranger was "scary" and raised a whole lot of questions.

"What are we going to talk about? What do I want to know? What do we have in common? Will I be rejected if I approach?"

And amid all this, Matty has been worried that reaching out to their donor might hurt their dad, Tony.

Welcome to crane country – The Hindu

No one warned K.S. Gopi Sundar that sarus cranes attack. He was a novice when he waded through waist-deep water towards a floating nest, expecting the incubating adult to walk away. Instead, it rose to its full five-foot-plus height and spread its enormous grey wings. Its trumpeting call blasted his eardrums. This wasnt what cranes were reported to do. He stood rooted as he gaped up at this towering bird when it swooped at his head, its dagger-shaped beak barely missing him. He dove into the water, unmindful that his field notebook, binoculars, and camera were getting ruined. Its piercing shriek sped up his retreat. Farmers, who had stopped work to watch, rebuked him, What were you thinking! These birds can kill you.

Sundar had discovered the peril of generalising that all cranes act the same. In many ways, sarus crane behaviour is the exception rather than the rule because the tallest flying birds in the world arent persecuted by people. Elsewhere, cranes harassed by humans are too timid to save their own skins.

The grey birds with bare red heads seem harmless as they strut, looking for insects and grain, through farmlands around Mainpuri, 100 kilometres east of Agra, Uttar Pradesh. As Sundar found out later, the farmers were not being dramatic. Over the past three to four decades, defensive sarus cranes had stabbed about 20 children. But the parents faulted their kids for provoking the birds.

Celebrated in epic sagas and revered for their long-term monogamous relationships, sarus cranes hold a special place in the residents hearts. Farmers dont chase them away from their fields, instead, relying on them to maintain surveillance at night. If nilgai or stray cattle come to feast, the vigilant birds pipe up, waking the people and saving their crops.

Armed protectors

Sundar not only underestimated the sarus but also the depth of villagers regard for them. He learned to approach nests to take measurements only when the less aggressive females were on incubation duty. After noting the figures, when he returned to his motorbike parked by the roadside, he often had to contend with men armed with sticks. They thought he was stealing eggs.

Geology, history, cropping cycles, cultural reverence, and the monsoon combine to make the Yamuna and Ganga basin sarus crane central. The largest population of this species lives in the most populous state of the country. The entire landscape is a blanket of sarus territories, and the birds dont leave at any time, says Sundar. No other crane species is as territorial as the sarus.

Cranes in committed relationships throw their heads up in the air and trumpet together while the males fluff their wings. By analysing audio recordings, the researcher realised each unison call is as unique as a fingerprint and can be used to identify pairs without catching and marking them.

Mystery messages

The birds communicate subtly too. A small greyish skin patch on the crown makes the red-headed cranes seem bald. By controlling the flow of blood, they adjust the size of the spot at will. Since the bright colour catches the eye, they get the message across without getting physical or noisy, although what they say is still a mystery.

Sundar caught fledglings and slipped colour coded bands onto their pink legs for identification. Thirteen years later, one of those youngsters returned to an area adjoining the spot where he had been born. Bachelors kicked out by established pairs bide their time in marginal no cranes land, waiting for a vacancy. In this case, the former owner flew into overhead electrical lines and perished, allowing the youngster to possess a piece of territory and start a family.

The banding exercise had an unintended consequence. The cranes around Mainpuri associated motorbikes with the trauma of their young being caught. For three years after the operation, they trumpeted in outrage at every passing motorcycle.

They generalised human behaviour.

BBC News heads to the dark web with new Tor mirror – The Verge

BBC News has made a version of its website available on the Tor network, allowing it to be more securely accessed via the anonymising browser. The news organisation is putting its international edition on the network, with coverage available in a variety of languages including Arabic, Persian, and Russian. The Tor network is frequently associated with the dark web, but its also a vital tool for anyone looking to preserve their anonymity while accessing regular websites.

The move is aimed at making the BBCs news coverage available more securely in countries that attempt to restrict access to it such as China, Iran, and Vietnam. Although the BBCs typical bbc.com/news URL already loads when visited via the browser, BBC News reports that using the .onion top level domain prevents spoofing and preserves end-to-end encryption, making it a more secure way to access the news site. Facebook launched a similar mirror back in 2014.

If youd like to give the service a go, you can download the Tor browser and head over to Bbcnewsv2vjtpsuy.onion. Alternatively, the Brave browser also includes a Tor browsing mode similar to the Incognito modes offered on other browsers.

Harry Potter: 10 Things About Ron Weasley The Movies Deliberately Changed – Screen Rant

The Ron Weasley in the books versus the Ron Weasley in the movies is quite different in many ways. While there are many similarities between both versions of the Harry Potter character, fans have noted that many things about Rons personality were changed for the movies. While, of course, some moments and scenes cant be translated from book to screen or need to be cut out for time, many feel that Rons characterization was changed too much. They feel he didnt really completely get his due compared to Harry and Hermione because of these changes.

RELATED:Harry Potter: 10 Fan Fiction Relationships We Wish Were Real

Here are ten things about Ron Weasley that the movies deliberately changed.

Click the button below to start this article in quick view

One of the saddest things about all the changes made to Ron as a character is how it makes him almost pointless in the plot. So many of Rons big moments and his importance as a member of the trio dont translate onto the screen. It often feels like Ron doesnt even need to be there as so many of the important things that happen are based around Harry or Hermione. Ron often gets less important screen time, so he can come off more as a side character.

While Ron is portrayed in the movies as Harry's best friend, the importance of this isn't really touched on. Ron and Harry are very close in the books, and their friendship is essential to Harry.

RELATED:Harry Potter: 6 Reasons Ron Is Harrys Best Friend (& 4 Reasons Its Actually Hermione)

They hang out together and have similar hobbies. Hermione is also a best friend, but they have a different bond. In the movies, it comes off like Hermione is much closer to Harry than Ron.

Because the movies dont have as much time to tell a story, they cant go into as much detail. So, while Rons family is around in the movies, the importance they have to Ron as a character isnt as focused on. Rons family is the cause of many of his deepest insecurities while also being extremely important to him. This aspect of his character isnt really explored that much in the movies likely because of time reasons.

In the books, its clear that Hermione and Ron both play vital roles in Harrys life. Harry needs them both, and they both have individual ways in which they said Harry in his journey as the Chosen One.

RELATED:10 Most Controversial Changes Made To The Story In The Harry Potter Movies

Ron often provides somewhat of a grounding and calming presence when Harry is more dramatic or Hermione is more emotional. He sometimes provides common sense, and this isnt shown in the books. One example is when he helps Hermione remember to do magic when the Devils Snare has them.

One of the other important ways that Ron functions as an important member of the trio is how he is the voice of knowledge about the wizarding world. In Harry Potter, there are a lot of cultural things that Harry and Hermione dont understand as they were raised by Muggles. Ron is able to provide this insight and knowledge since he was raised in the wizarding community. This knowledge is actually quite important to Harry many times.

In the books, Ron is overall a very loyal and caring friend. While he has his moments of insecurity, its clear that he does care deeply about his friends. They didnt showcase this near as often in the movies.

RELATED:Harry Potter: 10 Times Ron Weasley Surprised Us All

For example, at the end of Prisoner of Azkaban, Ron is willing to die to save Harry and Hermione while in thefilms he cowers in the corner while Hermione defends Harry.

In the books, Ron is also quite a funny character. He makes a lot of jokes and is clearly a character with a good sense of humor. But, in the movies, instead of making him humorous, they tend to make them more the butt of the joke.

RELATED:Harry Potter: 10 Things About Harry The Movies Deliberately Changed

Hes often used more as comic relief not because hes funny but because he comes across goofier. This is a shame because it really takes away from who Ron is. His sense of humor is an important part of his character, but he shouldnt be of the joke.

Ron might not be the smartest of the trio as far as grades go, but then again its also hard to compete with Hermione when shes so smart. But, Ron isnt an incompetent person. Hes probably mostly average overall as a wizard, but he isnt below average by any means. In many classes, he and Harry do equally as well at magic. But, in the movies, it comes across like Harry is extremely gifted at all kinds of magic while Ron is kind of subpar. This really makes it seem like hes more useful and incompetent than he really is.

One thing that many fans are frustrated about in the movies is that Ron doesnt really get a chance to shine. In the books, both Hermione and Ron have moments where they are the heroes as well as times when they are more flawed. But, in the movies, Hermione is often made out to be this perfect heroine while Iron is a bit of a dunce. This means that some of Rons best moments and lines are given to Hermione at Rons expense. This is a shame because overall it makes them both less interesting as characters.

This is a more minor change because it only has to deal with physical appearance, but it is one of the most obvious changes to spot. In the books, its talked about many times that the Weasleys are all red-heads with freckles. In the movies, however, Ron has red hair but not the freckles. This isnt a big deal, but it does seem like something that could have been added. However, it probably wasnt worth the effort of the continuity it would take to keep the freckles the same.

Gallant: 2 reasons why Seahawks arent more than above-average – MyNorthwest.com

Seahawks QB Russell Wilson attempted 20 passes to Seattle's 33 runs on Sunday. (AP)

Ive always wondered what would have happened inThe Matrixif Neo had taken the blue pill. After all, the real world that theredpill led to was a bombed-out, sky-scorched land where machines treat humans like AA batteries. Cypher said it best while eating his fake juicy meat: Ignorance is bliss.

Seahawks 27, Falcons 20: ONeils column | 710 reacts | Recap | Britt hurt

The first half of the Seahawks 27-20 victory over the Falcons featured a lot of blue pill bliss:

Chris Carson and company looked like they could run for 300 yards. Russell Wilson and Tyler Lockett were doing Russ & Tyler things. Matt Schaub threw an interception and nearly tossed a pick-6. The Seahawks scored three straight touchdowns going into the half.

But it also made me overlook some concerning developments that would rear their ugly heads in the second half, and that red pill realization of the truth set in:

The Seahawks are one of many above-average teams across the NFL.

Please excuse my rejection of reality, Hawksplainers. Believe me, I get it the Seahawks just dont blow teams out, even though they should. So instead of focusing on the repetitive trend, lets look at why its continuing in 2019.

Its easy to forget the struggles of the Seahawks defense in the first half, but the Falcons moved the ball all game long. They just couldnt stop shooting themselves in the foot before halftime.

Two missed field goals One interception (and another near pick-6 before one of the missed field goals) One fumble

If the Seahawks defense was a plus unit, they would have feasted on Matt Schaub, a 38-year-old backup QB who hasnt played well since 2012. But Seattles D is clearly not that. Schaub threw for 460 yards and a touchdown via screens, quick passes, and a lot of Julio Jones.

Matt. Schaub. Yes, this one.

Its time to swallow this red pill: The Seahawks wont have a pass rush in 2019. Im sure Pete Carroll will tell us that the ball was getting out quickly, but Seattle only managed two sacks in this game. One was via a Bobby Wagner blitz and the other was on a pass setting up to be a Hail Mary at the end of the second quarter. If it cant get sacks or force bad throws from a team thats allowed the third-most hits on QBs (for what its worth, Seattle had seven Sunday), those sacks are just never coming.

There were some nice moments. Rookie safety Marquise Blair has been an imposing thumper with two games of extended reps under his belt. And on a day without starting cornerback Tre Flowers, Shaquill Griffin made some nice plays on the ball (though Jones and Calvin Ridley looked unstoppable, and often).

Im going to highlight a nice moment that should have been more, however a near pick-6 thrown by Schaub to Akeem King. Schaub, who just hung it up while under pressure, badly overthrew his man and hit King right in the hands. Alas, the ball went through his mitts. An inconsistent defense without a pass rush must take advantage of every opportunity like that, because failing to capitalize against an actually good team will result in a loss.

The Seahawks offense is entirely dependent on three playmakers:

Russell Wilson Tyler Lockett Chris Carson

Its one of the better triplets in the league, and as they go, this offense goes.

But at times, it seems like offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is overwhelmed by these three options. Like a dogthat cant decide what its favorite toy is. The Seahawks first two possessions of the second half killed nearly all of their momentum. Two play calls in particular irked me:

Drive 1: A Carson run on first-and-15 (after an illegal formation) Drive 2: A Carson run on third-and-4

Carson was having a great first half, but that shouldnt make Schottenheimer forget about Wilsons existence especially in a game where center Justin Britt suffered what appears to be a serious knee injury. Russ is one of the best players in the league and should have thrown far more than 20 passes against the Falcons and their fifth-worst pass defense.

There were some other things that bothered me, namely Seattles idea of throwing jump balls to a covered David Moore. But Ill always be most frustrated by the Hawks obsession with achieving offensive balance. Why? Because they dont even do it right (20 passes to 33 runs).

Kincade Fire in Sonoma County burns 10000 acres; Napa County Fire heads to the scene – Napa Valley Register

The entire unincorporated community of Geyserville has been placed under a mandatory evacuation order as the Kincade Fire burns to the east and is advancing west into town Thursday morning, according to Sonoma County Sheriff's Officials.

The Register provided free access to this article. Please consider supporting our local journalism by purchasing a subscription.

All residents in Geyserville were ordered to leave just before 6:30 a.m. as the Kincade Fire burns out of control, damaging at least two structures in rural northeast Sonoma County, according to Cal Fire and sheriff's officials.

Cal Fire-Napa County Fire resources are among the many agencies fighting the fire, a Cal Fire representative said Thursday morning.

A total of 300 people have already been forced from their homes and an additional 1,700 people have been warned to be ready to leave.

The blaze has charred 10,000 acres with 0 percent containment as of 6 a.m., Cal Fire officials said. A total of 328 fire personnel are battling the blaze.

The evacuation center at Windsor High School at 8695 Windsor Rd. in Windsor will close at 7 a.m., county officials said. The Healdsburg Community Center at 1557 Healdsburg Ave. in Healdsburg will remain open.

The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office ordered mandatory evacuations and warnings starting at 12:30 a.m. Thursday. Residents on Red Winery Road, all of Alexander Mountain Road, state Highway 128 from Geysers Road to River Road including the Red Rock Casino and all roads off River Road have been ordered to leave.

The California Highway Patrol said that Highway 101 remains open.

The American Red Cross advises residents with large animals to head to the Sonoma County Fairgrounds at 1350 Bennett Valley Rd. in Santa Rosa.

The National Weather Service said as of 5:45 a.m. max wind gusts in the area of the blaze had come down to about 40-50 mph on the highest peaks and humidity remains very low. Sustained winds had dropped down to about the mid 20-to-30 mph range in the higher elevations.

At 2 a.m., conditions in the area of the fire showed temperatures in the 70s to 80s, with relative humidity in the single digits.

A Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 4 p.m. Thursday.

The fire has surged from being 300-400 acres around 11:30 p.m.

Wednesday to 5,000 acres around 1 a.m. Thursday and then 7,000 acres a little more than one hour later, per fire officials.

Sgt. Juan Valencia said there are still no reports of injuries or structure damage. The blaze was first reported at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday in rural Sonoma County off John Kincade and Burned Mountain roads east of Cloverdale, Cal Fire officials said.

Per its outage website, PG&E had shutdown power in the area a few hours prior around 5 p.m. for its Planned Safety Power Shutdown due to high fire danger weather.

A PG&E spokesperson said the company is aware of the blaze and that power in the area had been shutdown to 27,837 customers in the area around 3 p.m. Wednesday for the safety shutdown.

"The Kincade Fire is near the PSPS footprint, and we are working to gather additional information," the statement said.

Valencia said residents are advised to call 211, not 911, for information on the fire. He said 911 should only be used to report a life-threatening emergency.

Tottenham back on track in Europe with 5-0 rout of Red Star – Minneapolis Star Tribune

LONDON Tottenham enjoyed all the goals this time as it went from its heaviest home European loss to its biggest Champions League win.

Son Heung-min and Harry Kane both scored twice and Erik Lamela also netted in a 5-0 victory over Red Star Belgrade on Tuesday to lift the gloom at Tottenham.

It came three weeks after the humiliation of a 7-2 loss to Bayern Munich for last season's finalist.

Having also thrown away a 2-0 lead to draw their Group B opener to Olympiakos, Spurs are back on track in Europe. They moved to second place, a point ahead of Red Star but five behind Bayern Munich, which beat Olympiakos 3-2.

"It's exactly what we needed to do," Kane said after making it 18 goals in 22 Champions League appearances. "We know we've been in a tough run of results and it was the perfect way to respond."

It isn't just in Europe where Tottenham has struggled until Tuesday.

With only one win in his last four Premier League games, manager Mauricio Pochettino even expressed doubts over his Tottenham future.

Tottenham fans reminded the club's leadership "He's magic" in chants as the goals flowed against Red Star.

Pochettino was helped by a fellow Argentine.

It was a corner from Lamela that Kane headed in after nine minutes and he provided the cross that Son ran onto before finishing with a half volley in the 16th minute.

Son was on target again in the 44th, with Tanguy Ndombele slipping the ball through to the South Korea forward, who beat goalkeeper Milan Borjan at his near post.

"It's been a tough time," Son said. "We need to stick together."

This was not a night when Tottenham was going to surrender a winning position.

Not after the fourth goal came in the 57th minute.

Kane won the ball in midfield before playing in Serge Aurier on the right flank. The right back crossed to Lamela who netted on the turn to mark his 200th Tottenham appearance with a goal.

The Serbian champions offered little resistance in defense.

Kane had time to control Ndombele's pass in the penalty area before slipping in the fifth goal in the 72nd minute.

"We were ruthless in front of goal today," Kane said, "which we need to do more often."

It seemed a rare day when everything went smoothly but it came a month after a 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace provided a platform to build on that was never seized.

"It's a great moment to grow, be more mature," Pochettino said. "It should help us to be stronger in the future."

Tottenham heads to Liverpool on Sunday 13 points behind the Premier League leaders after nine games.

5 takeaways from the Patriots 27-13 win over the Browns – Boston.com

COMMENTARY

Five takeaways from the Patriots 27-13 win over the Browns, which saw Bill Belichick get career win No. 300 against the team that gave him his start as a head coach

THE BROWNS DIDNT BELIEVE

Theres always a fine line in football between a team playing to its strengths versus that same team being too predictable in its strategy. For instance, the prevailing wisdom prior to Sundays game was that the Browns best chance of challenging the Patriots was to pound the ball on the ground with the explosive Nick Chubb rather than entrust things to the leagues most-intercepted quarterback against a defense thats hawking the ball at historic proportions.

So how did Cleveland start Sunday? With four short pass attempts. Then they turned the ball over on the next three plays. And that, effectively, was the ball game.

Once the Browns settled in, they were competitive. Baker Mayfield connected on a dozen straight throws in one stretch. Nick Chubb finished with 131 rushing yards. Cleveland outscored New England over the final three quarters, 13-10.

However, none of that mattered in the result because the Browns began the game in a 17-0 hole. And given the way they dug that hole for themselves, its worth asking whether the dominance of the Patriots defense so far this season has crept into the heads of their opponents. And if that mental edge is becoming as much an advantage as the one established by the depth and level of the Pats physical talent.

That was clearly the case against the Jets, when Sam Darnold was seeing ghosts, and it appeared to be a factor again against the Browns. Cleveland was coming off its bye, so it had two weeks to prepare. Entering at 2-4, its coaches and players understood the desperation baked into their circumstances. Whether they scouted themselves or the Patriots in preparation, it wouldve been clear that the ground game was their best shot at beating their unbeaten hosts.

But instead they got cute by opening in the air. Then Chubb failed to protect the ball, which was wet to begin with, against a team that thrives on turnovers. And, almost ignoring that the second fumble came after a 44-yard carry, the Browns then tried an underhanded shovel pass that was thrown right into the face of New England lineman Lawrence Guy.

Theres no taking away from what the Patriots defense has accomplished. Donta Hightowers touchdown was the defenses fourth of the season. Guys pick gave them 25 takeaways through eight games. But this week showed some previously unseen cracks. The Browns ran the ball effectively, were the more efficient side for stretches, and managed to create some matchup problems. Cleveland challenged New England.

And it could have done so far more seriously had its coaching staff started the day more confident that the team was capable of doing so.

LETS MAKE A DEAL

Mohamed Sanu wasnt great in his Patriots debut, but he was good enough. His biggest play came in the second quarter, when he found a spot over the middle, got to the sticks, and held on through a lick to make a fourth-down-converting catch. His other grab on five targets was a fourth-quarter crosser that gained 19 yards.

Theres got to be more there if the Pats are to ultimately justify giving Atlanta a second-round pick for him, but its a start. And, hopefully, its also just a start for the Patriots efforts to improve themselves before the trade deadline.

The deadline is Tuesday at 4 p.m., and before then New England should be active in pursuit of improvements to the offense and particularly the offensive line, given the ravaging that group has incurred as a result of injury.

Big-ticket right guard Shaq Mason missed Sundays game, joining left tackle Isaiah Wynn and center David Andrews as the starters who have been relegated to the sideline up front. Theres a chance Wynn could return from injured reserve, and Mason isnt expected to be a long-term loss, but the ineffectiveness of the patchwork in front of Brady has begun to impact what the offense can do. And is as culpable as anything for the lack of consistency and clear strength that currently defines the attack.

Tom Brady was sacked three times Sunday, and was forced to throw away a handful of passes under pressure. That came on the heels of Monday night, when the Patriots prioritized getting the ball out of the quarterbacks hands quickly, as though doubting their ability to protect him on a traditional drop back. And then theres the matter of a running game that averaged 2.9 yards per rush against the Browns, further asserting itself as one of footballs least-effective units.

This isnt to say the Patriots should necessarily go out and throw a first-rounder toward the Redskins for holdout Trent Williams. But fortifying the offensive line could create the offensive balance and efficacy that at times has been painfully absent. Its worth paying a price to try and fix it. Its worth overpaying, even.

EDELMAN THE INVALUABLE

As his co-occupants in the receivers room come and go on what seems to be a regular basis, Julian Edelman just keeps delivering with his consistent excellence as valuable now as ever, and on high-profile display during another big performance on Sunday evening.

Edelman scored twice against the Browns, with both of those touchdowns highlighting how good he remains at finding the vulnerabilities in a defense, keeping play alive, and re-routing in such a way that he remains available for his quarterback. Its a combination of playmaking and predictability that is pivotal for an offense thats still trying to figure out its pieces and its power.

On his first score, Edelman initially tried to cross from Bradys left to right across the goal line, but found a linebacker in his path. Undeterred, Edelman staggered his stride, and adjusted with a banana cut back toward his quarterback. That gave him some space to make the catch, and it also gave him a running start for the surge he needed to get into the end zone.

His second score was similar, but this time the rush forced Brady out of his first look, then out of the pocket. Again going from left to right, Edelman worked his way into a gap in the coverage and the quarterback fired on the run.

Two and a half minutes after the Browns moved within one score, the Patriots lead ballooned back to 14. And an offense without an identity was again rescued by the impeccable on-the-fly recognition of its most reliable weapon.

THE RED ZONE IS AN ISSUE

The enormity of Edelmans two scores was amplified by the Patriots problems in the red zone, which is a season-long concern that continued when they converted only two of their six trips inside the 20-yard line on Sunday.

Those two were the touchdown tosses to Edelman. Otherwise they were forced to settle for a 20-yard field goal after facing second and goal from the 2; a blocked field goal after a 13-play march stalled just inside the 15; a 29-yard field goal after a one-yard run and two incompletions came after the club got down to the 12; and a missed field goal after the Pats took over on downs at the Cleveland 14 and actually went a couple of yards backwards.

Take away the two passes to Edelman, and thats six points on four series that advanced to within the foes 15. Overall, with that 2-for-6 New England dropped to an even 50 percent touchdown rate in the red zone for the season (18-for-36), and figures to drop from where they ranked at 19th in the NFL at the start of Week 8. If that rate survives through the second half, itll mark the Patriots worst red-zone percentage since 2003, when they scored touchdowns on 22 of 50 red-zone trips (44 percent). Yes, even the Matt Cassel-led offense of 2008 was better (52.8 percent).

Sunday, the trouble inside the 20 was multifaceted. They attempted six runs that netted nine yards. Brady was sacked once, losing seven yards. And Brady tried 10 passes, completing five for 10 yards. Take away the two scores to Edelman and he was 3-of-8 for 11 yards.

Those are ugly numbers made even uglier when by missing a couple of the four easy kicks.

NOW THE FUN BEGINS

With the Bills loss on Sunday, every team in the AFC now has at least two losses except for the Patriots, of course. Halfway through the campaign, the Pats are cruising to another AFC East title, and at this rate may not even need to sweat out the fight for one of the conferences two first-round playoff byes.

But things change a bit next week. Thats when New England travels to Baltimore to take on one of those two-loss teams, and John Harbaughs Ravens dont figure to come out of their own bye week looking as spooked and second-rate as the Browns did. They soared into their midseason siesta by going to Seattle and knocking off the Seahawks, and have historically been a squad that doesnt back down to the challenge presented by Brady and Belichick.

Further, they possess the NFLs No. 1 rushing offense, which Chubb and, before him, Frank Gore may suggest is the best way to attack the Patriots. The Ravens are a group that wont be afraid of inviting the Pats into a slugfest. Nor will they be fearful about taking shots and being aggressive. But typically they trust the system Harbaugh has built.

Ultimately, Sunday was about survival; getting a win and moving forward on a short week, against a talented team, amid tough conditions. But now its on to an intriguing matchup that promises to be as telling a test as the Patriots have faced. And a tilt that may tell us whether some of the cracks that are starting on the surface are truly worthy of being classified as concerns.

Tom Perezs No-Win Situation – The Atlantic

What I dont have right now is an immediate set of tools that I can say to this group: Next week, we can do the following to help you, Perez told me. What we do have right now is what were building ... and that we is not just us, but the movement that is coming together to recapture our democracy.

Hes still building. Even the Democratic politicians and operatives who regularly complain to me about Perez have acknowledged that he is in a no-win situation. Staffers at the DNC headquarters know it, too: If the Democratic nominee beats Donald Trump, Perez will get none of the credit, and if the Democrat loses, hell get more than his share of the blame. The most frequent criticism I hear about Perez is that by trying to stay neutral and not shape the nomination process, he has actually done a lotthat in his mission to restore faith in a retrenched Democratic establishment, hes instead come off like the embodiment of the establishments slow and awkward collapse.

For example, Perezs critics say that by refusing to change the established DNC rules and hold a climate-change debate, he is betraying the planet. (The counterargument: A concession might have opened the door to any number of topic-specific debates, and its not clear that one debate on climate change would have significantly changed how the issue has been addressed in the race.) By not buying ads defending former Vice President Joe Biden from Trumps smears in the Ukraine scandal, some go as far to say, Perez has betrayed the party and the Constitution (though buying those ads would have opened the DNC up to accusations of favoring one candidate). But perhaps most of all, Perezs attackers say, by making primary-debate rules that rely on donor and polling thresholds, hes enabled outsider candidates to advance and prevented more experienced Democrats from gaining momentum.

Read: The Democratic debates arent pleasing anyone

I asked Perez about this last claim, specifically: Has he made it so that the candidate who becomes the Democratic nominee is the one who spent months hoop-jumping to qualify for the debates? Tom hasnt made sure, he said. The voters have made sure. He went on: When youre at zero percent in the polling or 1 percent in a few polls, I dont see any historic precedent. Were three months and change out [from the Iowa caucuses]. I mean, nobody who was under 2 percent in the fall for the last 40 years won even a caucus. Nobody under 4 percent in December won anything.

Jeff Weaver, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermonts top strategist, told me he sees DNC chair as maybe one of the most difficult jobs in Washington, while making a point to say Perez has been working hard and doing it capably.

Arguably, there has never been a time in modern politics when the DNC was more important. Even though some people have already dropped out, this is still the largest primary field in history (just like everyone else, Perez didnt expect quite this many people to run). And while Democrats are consumed with fighting for the nomination, with neither the time nor the money to start thinking as far ahead as next November, the Trump campaign is already raising and spending more than any presidential campaign to date.

Federal parties in for long night as voting heads into final hours – Red Deer Advocate

OTTAWA Federal parties could be in for a long and tense night as the clock ticks toward the first polls closing in Newfoundland and Labrador in a few hours before the rest of the country begins to follow suit.

Canadians started heading to the polls on Monday morning to cast their ballots following a 40-day election campaign that featured countless promises, numerous personal attacks and enduring uncertainty right up to the finish line.

The Liberals under Justin Trudeau and Conservatives under Andrew Scheer started the election largely neck-and-neck in opinion polls and, despite their best efforts, neither leader seems to have been able to jump ahead.

While voting was reportedly going smoothly across much of the country, Elections Canada confirmed problems with some polling stations that had caused delays in their being opened. Officials said these were isolated incidents.

There were also concerns about some voters having reportedly received robocalls in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Quebec with incorrect or misleading information about when and where they could cast their ballots. Elections Canada did not immediately confirm these reports.

The Liberals, meanwhile, were flagging concerns about some candidates from the other parties continuing to run advertisements on Facebook on Monday despite a blackout on paid social-media or search-engine ads on election day.

Elections Canada doesnt evaluate incidents in real time, said spokeswoman Natasha Gauthier, adding complaints about potential ads running during the blackout period should go to the Office of Commissioner of Canada Elections, whose mandate is to investigate and enforce the rules.

As with any general election, we have been receiving complaints about election advertising as well as advertising during the blackout period, Myriam Crousette, spokeswoman for the Office of the Commissioner of Canada Elections, said in an email.

However, the Office of the Commissioner does not confirm or deny whether we are in the process of conducting an investigation. This is in keeping with the confidentiality provisions of the Canada Elections Act.

The Conservatives, NDP and Greens did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Trudeau voted in his Montreal riding of Papineau on Monday morning after flying back the night before from British Columbia, where he spent the final day of the campaign and which could prove critical to deciding which party gets to form government.

He was joined by his wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau and their three children.

The Liberal leader, who came to power in 2015 on an inspirational promise of governing differently, suffered an uneven election campaign this time around thanks in part to revelations he wore racist makeup before entering politics.

The SNC-Lavalin affair also continued to dog Trudeau, as did anger among some progressives over his failure to reform the electoral system and his governments decision to buy the Trans Mountain oil pipeline.

Scheer was scheduled to cast his ballot later in the day in Regina after also spending Sunday in Vancouver and B.C.s Lower Mainland in the hopes of securing enough seats to knock off the incumbent Liberals.

Like Trudeau, the Conservative leader faced challenges on the campaign trail, where he was seen as underperforming in the first French-language debate and faced pointed questions about his position on abortion and climate change.

The other leaders also sought to portray a Tory government as one that would cut services for Canadians after Scheer promised to balance the budget in five years, and he faced questions about his U.S. citizenship and claims to have been an insurance broker.

Scheer spoke briefly Monday to supporters in Wascana, Sask., where the Conservatives are hoping to unseat Ralph Goodale, the longtime Liberal MP and cabinet minister who has been the Liberals only representative in the province for years.

Ralph Goodale has sold out Saskatchewan time and time again, Scheer said before going door to door to encourage voters to get to the polls.

He voted against major pipeline projects that would get Saskatchewan resources to other markets. He voted in favour of the carbon tax. Todays the day we are all going to send Ralph Goodale a message: If he wont vote for Saskatchewan, we wont vote for him.

Ultimately, once all the ballots are cast and counted, the balance of power could reside with one of the other main parties should neither the Liberals nor Conservatives secure enough seats to win a majority government.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, who will spend the night in his B.C. riding of Burnaby South after voting in last weekends advance polls, started the race facing questions about his leadership due to lacklustre fundraising, a shortage of candidates and other organizational challenges.

More than a month later, however, Singh is seen to have run a surprisingly strong campaign that has attracted many progressive voters, resulting in a bump in the NDPs polling numbers, even though the partys chances in Quebec remain uncertain.

The NDP leader was cheered by volunteers and supporters as he visited a campaign office in Burnaby, where he thanked those who helped over the past month and a half before reflecting on the partys campaign.

The reason why I think we got a lot of love, he said, a reason why a lot of people have been saying this is an exciting campaign, is because its been about people. Weve been fighting for people every single day of this campaign.

Bloc Quebecois Leader Yves-Francois Blanchet has overseen a surge in support in la belle province after his party was largely left for dead after abysmal results in 2011 and 2015 followed by years of infighting.

While many Quebecers say sovereignty is not a priority, Blanchet has been able to tap into the same nationalist sentiment that propelled the centre-right Coalition Avenir Quebec to power at the provincial level.

That resurgence has come at the expense of the Liberals, Conservatives and NDP, all of which entered the campaign hoping to win over Quebecers, who have historically played a major role in deciding the makeup of the government in Ottawa.

Meanwhile, Green Leader Elizabeth May, who voted in her riding on Vancouver Island on Monday, is hoping her party can capitalize on its recent success in provincial votes and translate that to more seats in the House of Commons.

May, who voted at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Sidney, B.C., said she spent the morning answering messages of support from children who told her theyve been urging their parents and grandparents to vote Green.

It leaves you feeling very inspired and uplifted for a solid Green turnout today, she said.

Maxime Bernier, who has spent much of the campaign trying to protect his own seat in Beauce, Que., will find out whether his upstart Peoples Party of Canada is a movement or a footnote.

I hope that the participation rate will be very high all across the country and well see what will happen in a couple of hours from now, he said before casting his ballot.

The first polls will close around 7 p.m. ET in Newfoundland and Labrador, with the last closing in B.C. at 10 p.m.
