Giants gear up for another round with Adrian Peterson – Giants.com

That afternoon 14 months ago, Peterson out-rushed Saquon Barkley by 111 yards. But in the rematch five weeks later, Barkley ran for a career-high 170 yards, including a 78-yard score, and Peterson was held to 16 yards on 10 carries.

The two running backs, one seemingly in the twilight of his career and the other in his infancy, admire each other. Peterson sought out Barkley and spoke to him on the field following that first game last year and told the young back, I love what youre doingthe skys the limit.

Hes a monster, Barkley said this week of Peterson. A.P., hes one of the best running backs to ever do it. I know he just tied Walter Paytons touchdown record (Peterson and the Hall of Famer each have 110, the fourth-highest total in history). Hopefully, he doesnt break it (tomorrow). But Ive been a big fan of him, got to talk to him multiple times. He always gives me great words of encouragement, but just a big fan. I love watching his game and its amazing to see what hes able to do at this age.

Barkley was asked what most impressed him about Petersons game. In answering, he proved that he is closely monitoring the future Hall of Famers season.

When you look at his stats, hes got like 180 carries for like 700 and something yards (183 attempts for 784 yards), Barkley said. His longest run is 29 yards (correct). Back in the day, A.P. was breaking for 80, 70, this, that and the third. Even last year, he had some of those. So, you can see that it just shows that hes just being real productive. Very productive. Taking what the defense gives him, you still see him run through arm tackles, run through tackles, run a physical game downhill. Thats the most impressive game. There is going to be some point with all of us, where myself, where Zeke (Ezekiel Elliott), where Todd (Gurley), where Christian (McCaffrey), we might not have those years or those seasons where were breaking 80-yard touchdown runs or 70-yard catch and runs. But you still do it and you still can be able to be productive in a type of manner o,r I guess you could say, type of game I had last week (112 yards on 24 carries, none longer than 12 yards).

Peterson is 12 years older than Barkley. They each play with a first-round rookie quarterback, Dwayne Haskins for Washington and Daniel Jones for the Giants. But each team would be very happy to ride their marquee running back to victory tomorrow.

*The Jones-Haskins quarterback matchup is just the second this season of two 2019 draft choices. The first occurred on Oct. 20, when Jones and Arizonas Kyler Murray, the first overall selection, squared off.

*A Giants victory would give them a season sweep of the Redskins for the first time since 2014. They are 101-68-4 all-time vs. Washington and are the only franchise with at least 100 victories against another franchise.

*The Giants are 12-9-1 in FedExField since it opened in 1997.

With the Redskins at 3-12 and in position for the No. 2 overall selection in the NFL Draft, there's no secret the team has many holes to fill.

While Washington will likely select animmediate impact player at the top of the draft board, the Redskins will need a lot more help in order to be competitive in 2020. One way to expedite the rebuild is hitting on multiple picks in the draft, both in the early and the late rounds.

Here are 10 prospects that Redskins fans should become familiar with as draft season is nearly upon us.

1. Chase Young, EDGE, Ohio State: Not much else needs to be said about Chase Young: hes a flat out stud. Young will consistently give you 10 to 15 sacks a year from day one in the NFL. Hes a game wrecker. By losing to the Giants in Week 16, the Redskins will likely have the No. 2 overall selection and the chance to select Young. The Maryland native would be the most impactful Redskins defender since the late great Sean Taylor.

2. Jerry Jeudy, WR, Alabama:Jeudy is arguably the best route runner to come out of the college ranks ever. The 2018 Biletnikoff Award winner easily separates from defenders and is a smart instinctual player who knows how to find holes in a zone. He will be a bonafide No. 1 wide receiver the minute he is drafted. If the Redskins selected him, he would make a fantastic duo with future superstar Terry McLaurin.

3. Andrew Thomas, OT, Georgia: Thomas is the best left tackle prospect in the draft to this point. He has a big sturdy frame that will hold up well at the next level. Thomas is still a little raw, but with some refinements to his game and quality coaching, he can be a franchise left tackle, something the Redskins need going forward.

4. Jeffrey Okudah, CB, Ohio State: Okudah will be a shutdown corner at the next level due to his elite man-coverage abilities to go along with good ball skills. He was constantly tasked with covering the others team's best wide receiver, and he lived up to the task every week. He has another difficult matchup in the College Football Playoff against Clemson and their great wide receivers, Tee Higgins and Justyn Ross. Hell make an immediate impact in the league.

5. Hunter Bryant, TE, Washington: Bryant is the prototypical move tight end in todays NFL at 6-foot-2, 240 lbs. He is capable of lining up in the slot, backfield, and at the H position. Teams will love his versatility.Bryant had over 800 yards receiving this year with some big highlight plays sprinkled in, too. His game is reminiscent of current Redskins tight end Jordan Reed and Giants tight end Evan Engram.

6. Michael Pittman, Jr., WR, USC: The son of former NFL running back Michael Pittman, Michael Pittman Jr. has NFL pedigree and size teams crave on the outside in the NFL. At 6-foot-4 and220 lbs., Pittman Jr. dominated opponents this year with 95 receptions, 1,222 yards, and 11 touchdowns this year. Heis not the fastest player, but he creates separation with his body, has solid route running, and a good use of leverage. He would be a great quarterback-friendly target for Dwayne Haskins on day 2 of the draft.

7. Alaric Jackson, OT, Iowa: Jackson is an experienced smart player with over 30 starts in the Big Ten. He possesses strong hands and knows how to set up blocks well. Iowa knows how to produce offensive lineman and Jackson will be another one who can start at the next level. He would be a solid day 2 value.

8. Cameron Dantzler, CB, Mississippi State: Cameron Dantzler is a long wiry corner at 6-foot-2. Hes best in press-man coverage situations with an eye for the ball. Dantzler isnt being talked about too much yet about as a top cornerback in this draft, but if he hasa solid performance at the scouting combine and when people get to watch more film on him, he might just skyrocket up draft boards.

9. Julian Blackmon, Safety, Utah: Julian Blackmon is a very fluid player on the back end that can be that centerfielder type of player in the secondary. He's smooth in and out of the backpedal and is explosive to the ball. He is a converted cornerback who can help in man-to-mansituations when the occasion arises. Blackmon's potential is through the roof.

10. Cam Akers, RB,Florida State: Akers is being slept on as a top running back prospect due to his teams poor play. Dont get it twisted though, Akers is a baller and will start in the NFL. Hes a strong, tough runner who had over 1,100 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns this year. He's also a solid threat out of the backfield, shown by his 30 receptions this year. The Redskins have good young talented running backs, but they come with major injury concerns. Getting a prospect like Akers in either the third or fourth roundof the draft wouldnt be the worst idea.

The Redskins have a lot of holes to fill, and here are multiple players the Redskins could use in the Burgundy and Gold next year.

Peterson: Time, conditions might be right for beginning dairy farmers – Crow River Media

After the difficult few years that the nations dairy farmers have been through, Collin Peterson said many might be skeptical of the advice he shared with First District Association members Saturday.

People have given me a hard time for saying this, but I think if youre a young person, and you want to get into dairy, there has never been a better time, in my opinion, Peterson said. And Ive been around this business for 40, 50 years. Theres never been a better time to get into this business than now, if thats what you want to do.

Peterson credited First District Association leadership with the bold statement they made by pursuing a massive expansion of their Litchfield processing facility.

"For a change, things are looking a little more positive for the dairy industry than the past," he said. "I want to commend you ... you guys provide great leadership in putting these new improvements on your plant and moving you in the right direction."

That optimism is especially strong for young people considering a future in dairy, Peterson said, as a combination of factors have opened the door to potential success.

A significant factor is the Dairy Margin Coverage Program, which provides dairy operations with risk management coverage when the national milk price and the average cost of feed falls below a certain level.

The safety net provided by the program, in addition to other economic factors, give prospective young farmers a solid base upon which to build their business, Peterson said.

For someone considering entering dairy farming, it is a classic example of buying low.

Youve got barns sitting empty that you can lease, Peterson said. Youve got cows that have been relatively cheap. You can work things out with your neighbors to provide feed. So, you can get into this without really putting any capital into it. You can take the margin coverage to the bank and use it as financing.

Peterson said the original Dairy Margin Coverage Program was screwed up in the 2014 bill that created it. He said he thought at the time that $6.50 above feed cost was too good, an opinion shaped by $7 per bushel corn.

So we ended up not having a safety net that worked, and some people that got burned, Peterson said. Its been somewhat of a change to get people to look at the new Dairy Market Coverage that we put in the last farm bill.

The new program has a milk margin-minus-feed-price of $9.50 or less, which has proven to be a much more palatable number for most dairy farmers, Peterson said. The program also included a 25 percent discount if farmers signed up for five years. About 75 percent of dairy farmers nationwide enrolled for five years, Peterson said.

It paid out a number of months this last year, he said. If the futures prices hold as they were being projected, there probably wont be as much payout next year.

As bright as the picture might be for someone looking at getting into dairy farming today, the scene is considerably darker for those who got into the business the past three or four years.

If youre a young guy that started out at that time, youre probably behind the 8-ball, Peterson said. Thats a problem. Theres probably not enough profit in dairy to get you out of that situation.

But if you start off and dont have any debt and you can put together the right situation, I think youve never had a better opportunity, he added. I think you can make it work.

Beast of the East wrestling: Patience pays off with title for SJVs Dean Peterson – nj.com

Before he was one of the nations top wrestlers, St. John Vianney junior Dean Peterson was a boxer so this feeling was nothing new.

Like Marsha Brady, Peterson hid his swelling nose behind his hands and bopped around at the center of the mat feeling like he just got punched in the face.

This was not a boxing match, however. This was just another day as a high school wrestler.

All wrestlers get banged up, but Peterson took a headbutt to the face and was visibly in pain as medical attention came to his aide.

It didn't matter.

Despite the injury, Peterson never slowed down. He not only never wavered, he got even stronger and dominated the third period on his way to an 8-2 win over Blairs Ryan Miller on Sunday in the 120-pound final at the 27th Beast of the East wrestling tournament at the University of Delawares Bob Carpenter center.

Peterson led 3-0 before the headbutt and tacked on two more takedowns and an escape to become the Shore Conferences first Beast of the East champion since Southerns Glenn Carson and Jackson Memorials Scott Winston both won titles in 2007.

"I'm not taking this as I won this, I'm going to win a state championship," Peterson said. "I still have to put the work in."

Peterson was one of three New Jersey wrestlers to win titles at the prestigious tournament, which annually features more than 1,000 wrestlers from 100 schools and 15 states.

Peterson, a Princeton University commit, joined DePauls Connor ONeill (170) and Colonias John Poznanski (182) as the Garden States representatives at the top of the podium after he missed last years tournament while recovering from a Grade 2 concussion that kept him off the mat for nearly three months.

My mind wasnt in it, said Peterson, who skipped last years Beast after making his season debut the week before at Southerns Robin Leff Tournament. I couldnt do much on the mat so I wasnt going to rush myself back.

That patience paid off.

Peterson put together the finishing touches on his undefeated sophomore season 10 weeks after missing the Beast by winning the 113-pound state at the NJSIAA State Championships, becoming the first St. John Vianney wrestler to ever win a state title.

Will his junior season be just as dominant?

This was only the beginning but dont bet against a fighter.

Peterson: Meet the most loyal of Iowa State’s very loyal fans, who have attended each Cyclones bowl game – Des Moines Register

ORLANDO, Fla. Money was tight, back when Bill Hoefle was doing his residency in small animal surgery at Iowa State.

It was the early 1970s. Pennies were pinched everywhere and by almost everyone, but by golly it wasnt dire enough to keep this loyal Cyclones fan from attending football games.

He went to all the regular-season home games, at what back then was the Cyclones old Clyde Williams Field. The Johnny Majors-coached team was so goodthat it would make school history. With an 8-3 record, his Cyclones were invited to the 1971 Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, and for Iowa State that was a very big deal. It was first-time-in-school-history big, and Bill had to go.

There was no way he'dgoing to miss his schools first trip to a bowl game. So, a couple years into their marriage, the Hoefles Bill and Judy decided, what the heck.

They flew to the game.

Bill and Judy Hoefle pose in front of South End Zone at Jack Trice Stadium Sunday, Dec. 21, 2019, in Ames, Iowa. A Hoefle has been to each Iowa State bowl game since the 1971 Sun Bowl.(Photo: Photo by Nirmalendu Majumdar/Ames Tribune.)

It was probably crazy that long ago for a pretty young faculty person to put out money for the Sun Bowl, but I wanted to be there, Bill said. It was a big event. I felt I had to be there.

Iowa State lost against LSU in that game, but that didnt diminish Bill and Judys love of the team. Matter of fact, their fondness for Cyclones athletics has grown over the years to include Bill attending each and every Iowa State bowl game a streak that will continue during Saturdays 11 a.m. World Camping Bowl against No. 15 Notre Dame in Orlando, Florida.

His streak is all 14 Cyclones bowl games from El Paso to the Pinstripe Bowl in New York ... from the Peach Bowl in Atlanta to the Humanitarian Bowl on the blue field in Boise, Idaho, Bill Hoefle has been there.

Judy has, too, except for the Boise trip, and really, who could blame her? The weather was horrible. Snow fell during the game. The Cyclones lost against hometown Boise State 34-16 in a miserable game on New Years Eve 2002.

When I saw it on television, I knew Id made the right decision, Judy said. It wasnt the greatest of weather.

Their bowl treks have gone by the book. There have been no travel hassles, because they travel on alumni-chartered flights.

I have an aversion to driving farther than the Des Moines airport, said Bill, who lives in Ames.

The Hoefles are examples of the loyal fans athletics director Jamie Pollard promised bowl officials would show up in Orlando. Iowa State fans go everywhere whether its regular-season road games to Morgantown, West Virginia and Waco, Texas, or taking over the Riverwalk last year at the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, Texas Cyclones fans not only are seen, but theyre heard.

The fact that the Camping World folks believe in us, is a great example of the brand that weve created, and that brands been created by the tremendous support of our fans, by the outstanding work of our coaches, but most of all, by those young men in that locker room, Pollard said during a media scrum after the bowl announcement.

Iowa State sold its 8,000-ticket allotment within a week. Further demand for tickets, from both Iowa State and Notre Dame, has been so robust, that tickets are now being sold throughout the upper deck of Camping World Stadium.

Ten of those tickets will be the Hoefles Bill and Judy;sonBill Jr.;daughterPaige;their spouses;and grandchildren Abby, Nate, Sydney and Ryan.

Weve taken parts of the family before when one family was able to go, and one wasnt, Judy said. Itll be fun. The younger kids are happy about going to be able to have a day at Disney World.

The whole kit and caboodle are going. Its about memories.

Tre Petersons story of excellence and perseverance – WRBL

If you watch Columbus High football, Tre Peterson usually stands out pretty easily. His determination on the field makes his a force to deal with for his opponents. But off the field, hes just as tenacious when it comes to his studies.

Petersons hard work on the football field and in the classroom has paved a bright future for him. Hell attend Yale University on a football scholarship. While it may seem like a big change, he cant wait to get there. Tre handled Yales stringent admissions process the school has an acceptance rate near 5 percent with an average GPA over 4.1 and the workload that comes with being the starter on a Georgia high school football team. Peterson says that faith and determination got him through it all.

believe in the man above, because regardless, you know as long as you continue to believe in him, then you can accomplish anything.

While many football players dream of playing for major Power 5 schools such as Auburn or Georgia, Tre felt like a chance at the Ivy League was just too good to pass up. While pursuing his dreams to play at the next level, Peterson has also dealt with heartbreaking tragedy as well. Two years ago, Tre lost his mom to a heart condition.

It gave me a different perspective on life. You cant take anything for granted. One thing could be here, then in one second, its gone.

Tre credits his determination to his mom. Thats one thing I got from my mom to be determined. Regardless of what youre doing just do it to the best of your ability. Regardless of that situation. youre in that situation for a reason. Peterson says.

We wish Tre the best of luck with the rest of his senior year and when he makes his way to Yale.

Was Laci Peterson Found? Where Was Her Body? – Heavy.com

Laci Peterson was missing for four months until her body washed ashore in the San Francisco Bay. She went missing December 24, 2002. The pregnant womans body had been dumped in the bay.

Petersons husband, Scott Peterson, is on death row after he was convicted of first-degree murder. The body of Conner Peterson, her unborn child, washed up on shore April 13, 2003. Laci Petersons body was found the next day. She was eight months pregnant at the time of her death.

The location of her body and the location of her fetus was a key piece of evidence used at trial. A hydrologist testified that the bodies locations indicated they were dumped at Brooks Island, which is where Scott Peterson told police he had gone fishing the day of his wifes disappearance. Attorneys for Scott Peterson argued in his appeal the hydrologists testimony was not factual, and that the locations of the bodies indicated the body could have been discarded at one of two locations, the appeal saod.

Heres what you need to know:

FacebookLaci Peterson and Scott Peterson on their wedding day.

Laci Peterson disappeared on Christmas Eve in 2002, and it would be four months before her family would have any inkling what became of her. A late spring storm dislodged the remains of Peterson and her unborn child. Over the course of two days, the remains washed ashore on April 13 and 14, 2003, according to the appeal filed in the Peterson murder case.

Conner Petersons body was the first to wash ashore on April 13, 2003, according to the appeal. The next day, Laci Petersons body was found. Conners body was found about one mile north of Brooks Island, where Scott Peterson had been fishing. Laci Petersons body washed ashore two miles northeast of Brooks Island, east of Conners body.

Because it was four months before Laci Petersons body was found, there was no forensic evidence tying the body to Scott Peterson. The state of California relied on three key pieces of evidence based on testimony from expert witnesses. An expert in fetal growth testified evidence indicated the unborn child, Conner, was killed December 23 or 24. The evidence was collected from Conners leg bone. Another witness testified to dog scent evidence. A dog alerted at the Berkeley Marina, indicating Scott Peterson transported his wifes body to the marina. Thirdly, a hydrologist testified to body movement in the bay. The witness said Laci Petersons body was left exactly where Scott Peterson told police he was fishing.

After the murder, according to the prosecutions theory, Scott Peterson put his wifes body in the toolbox on the back of his truck and took it to his warehouse in Modesto. At the warehouse, he attached the body to homemade cement anchors, placed it on the back of his boat and towed it to the Berkeley Marina. Testimony indicated he launched the boat and pushed the body overboard.

Prosecutors in the Peterson case contended Scott Peterson murdered his wife at their home in Modesto on the night of December 23 or the morning of December 24. Then, they said, he dumped her body in the San Franciso Bay. The body of Peteson and her fetus washed ashore after a storm in April, prompting murder charges to be filed. The defense team for Peterson argued that Laci and Conner were still alive December 24 when Scott Peterson drove to the marina, according to an appeal filed in his case.

However, the exact way Laci Peterson died has never been determined. Her body was found badly decomposed. The fetus of Conner, Petersons unborn child, was more intact than his mother. A forensic pathologist determined the fetus was protected from the elements in the uterus. The length of Conners leg bone, however, was used to determine the date Laci Peterson died. The bone indicated that Conner died on December 23 or 24, which matched the states case that Scott Peterson murdered his wife and dumped her body on a fishing trip, the appeal said.

There was no evidence to indicate Laci Peterson was smothered, the appeal said. Law enforcement did not collect pillows to test for evidence. The appeal argued the smothering theory was presented to explain why there was no blood found at their Modesto home.

Dr. Peterson speculated she may have died from strangulation or smothering which could leave behind no forensic evidence, but it was impossible to be sure because her head and neck were missing, as well as her forearms, most of both legs and all internal organs, except for the uterus, the Sioux City Journal reported.

Hosey: Where in the world is Drew Peterson? – Northwest Herald

It was 12 years and two months ago that Stacy Peterson disappeared.

In all that time, the police never have been able to figure out where she went or what happened to her.

The cops combed through the home she shared with her husband, Bolingbrook police Sgt. Drew Peterson, volunteer searchers walked fields, divers went into ponds and the canal and nobody managed to turn up a trace of Stacy, who would be 35 if shes still alive.

Drew Peterson, incidentally, is 65 years old, but only was 49 when he made 19-year-old Stacy his fourth wife.

After Stacy disappeared, the state police named Peterson a suspect in her potential homicide, but never charged him with killing her, potentially or otherwise. In fact, they never charged him with doing anything to her at all.

If Peterson did do anything at all to Stacy, he probably regrets it now, because it forced the authorities to look at the untimely demise of his third wife, Kathleen Savio, in 2004.

The circumstances of Savios death truly were suspicious. Yet the state police, for some reason, dismissed it at the time as nothing more than an unfortunate, freak bathtub accident.

Peterson ended up getting 38 years for Savios murder. Then he got another 40 years for supposedly conspiring to orchestrate the killing of Will County States Attorney James Glasgow from behind the walls of maximum security Menard Correctional Center.

Thats a lot of years and it would be nothing short of a miracle for Peterson outlive his sentence. Still, there has been no justice for Stacy. Unless thats what all this is about with prison officials hiding Peterson away from the rest of the world.

First they moved Peterson out of Illinois, taking him from Menard and putting him in a federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana. Then, last week, Peterson was pulled out of Terre Haute and sent off to well, no one seems to know, as prison officials are keeping it secret.

The Illinois Department of Corrections did issue a statement about it, saying, Drew Peterson has transferred from the Federal Bureau of Prisons to a state facility outside Illinois. He remains under the jurisdiction of the Illinois Department of Corrections. For safety and security purposes, the department does not discuss details concerning the placement of offenders who have transferred under the terms of the Interstate Corrections Compact Agreement.

It boggles my mind, said Joseph Shark Lopez, one of the attorneys who represented Peterson in his murder case, of the recent moves made.

Ive never seen anything like that in my life, Lopez said. Very strange.

Another of Petersons attorneys, Steve Greenberg, said he had no idea what became of him. He suggested the authorities secretly may have released Peterson, or that he could have escaped, or was possibly dead.

Either way, Greenberg, who now has R. Kelly as a client, said he hadnt heard from Peterson since he departed the prison in Terre Haute.

The last I heard from him was a few months ago. Peterson called to tell a story of his cellmate setting him up and getting him in trouble.

He said he was working in the prison laundry, a day like any other day, when he was pulled into the lieutenants office, where they advised me that a knife and a 25-foot rope was found in my locker. Those were both pretty serious charges for the prison.

Peterson said he ultimately was cleared of wrongdoing, but not before he spent a month in the prisons Special Housing Unit.

Its a nightmarish place where they dont allow TV, phones, magazines or nothing, Peterson said of the unit. All they let you do is read, which is something I really dont do.

It sounds pretty awful, even if reading is something you happen to do. But at least we had some idea where they were keeping Peterson.

Now, its anybodys guess. It might as well be a potential homicide.

For these Detroit Lions, jersey swaps are more than just about the piece of cloth – Detroit Free Press

As players spilled onto the field for postgame handshakes, after Dwayne Haskins posed for a selfie with fans and Case Keenum took the final kneel-down snap in his place, Bo Scarbrough had one thing on his mind: meeting his idol, Adrian Peterson.

Scarbrough weaved his way through traffic and found Peterson near where Keenum took his knee. The two spent a minute expressing admiration for each others game, and when they were done, Peterson retreated to his locker room, peeled the jersey off his back and sent it to the young Detroit Lions running back in the visiting locker room at Washingtons FedExField.

I walked straight over there to him like, boom, Scarbrough said about the Nov. 24 game. Told him hes my favorite player. We had a conversation and he told me, Yeah, (you can have it). It was like Fourth of July and Christmas.

Scarbrough kept Petersons game-worn No. 26 jersey in his locker the next few days, relishing the inscription on the number 2 as validation of the hard work hed put in.

Bo, young fella, keep running that rock hard, the inscription read. I love to see that physical play! God bless you! Put God #1. Everything else will fall into place. A.D.

A seventh-round pick by the Cowboys in 2018, Scarbrough never sniffed the field in Dallas and made pit stops with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Seattle Seahawks before finally catching his break with the Lions.

He made his first NFL start in mid-November against the Cowboys, and playing on the same field as Peterson a week later, he rushed for a career-high 98 yards in the Lions 19-16 loss to Washington.

Scarbrough, who has 80 carries for 335 yards and one touchdown in five games this season, said he has long tried to emulate Petersons running style, which he describes as big (and) angry.

He just dont give a (expletive) about nobody, Scarbrough said. I feel like when he gets the ball, its just like a light in the sky. You never know what he going to do with it. Its a miracle when you watch him.

Heis one of dozens of Lions players who have traded jerseys with opponents after games this season. Some fans, coaches and players dont like the look of cavorting with the enemy after a loss. But those who take part in the ritual say its often deeply personal.

[How Kyle Sloter knows he can be a starting quarterback in the NFL]

For Scarbrough, who plans to display Petersons jersey in a frame that reads, My Favorite Running Back of All-Time, simply being on the same field as Peterson was emotional, given his path to the NFL.

Its just like a little kid just smashing his hand in a pile of cake, Scarbrough said. Thats how exciting it is to get to meet one of your favorite players thats been your favorite player since you can remember, and you finally get to actually meet him and play against him.

With one more chance to exchange jerseys this season Sunday against the Green Bay Packers, three other Lions explain why jersey swaps are meaningful to them.

Ford grew up in Alton, Illinois, across the state line from St. Louis, where Ezekiel Elliott was a schoolboy star. Ford and Elliott never played against each other in high school, but they ranked 1-2 in the St. Louis area in rushing one season, and when they met for the first time on the field this season, Ford had to ask Elliott for his jersey.

Ive known him since I was like 5, Ford said. Hes from exactly where Im from, same area. We grew up in the same area. Went to the same Boys and Girls Club. Same guy.

Ford said he sought advice from Elliott coming out of the draft and occasionally talks football with the Dallas Cowboys running back via social media or text.

Getting Elliotts jersey, he said, was a way to pay homage to his hometown.

Itll be super cool to be like, Me and that guy from the same area both made it, hesaid. Just to be able to exchange jerseys, its something, not just for me but for the city and just everybody thats keeping eyes on us. Its super cool.

Ford, in his second NFL season, said he trades jerseys only with guys that Im really cool with and that I feel Im real good friends with.

Me and Zeke been knowing each other since we were real young kids, worked out together before we went to college, he said. Hes just my guy. Just a guy that I hang out with, known since we were young. Its just kind of like old friends that made it to the league, exchanged jerseys.

Slay has an extensive jersey collection from his seven seasons in the league. At one point, he was exchanging jerseys with opponents on an almost weekly basis, often with close friends.

This year, Slay said he made one swap that was especially meaningful with Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald.

Hes a special guy, man, Slay said. Hall of Famer. Great receiver. Been going against him for quite a bit, so its an honor that he gave me his jersey.

Slay and Fitzgerald have played against each other six times. The Lions are 2-3-1 in those games, and while Slay hasnt always covered Fitzgerald, he has immense respect for Fitzgeralds game and style of play.

At 36 years old, Fitzgerald is nearing the end of his career.

Slay said he wanted Fitzgeralds jersey both as a way to commemorate their battles against each other and also to have a piece of history from one of the games all-time greats.

Hes a competitor, Slay said. He competes at a high level. Very humble guy, man. Probably one of the most humble receivers. Him and Calvin (Johnson), are the most humble two guys I ever met as a receiver corps that dont say nothing to nobody, just uplifting guys. So very humble dude.

Like Ford, Golladay said he rarely trades jerseys, and when he does its usually with close friends.

In his locker, he has the jerseys of former Lions wide receiver T.J. Jones and Miami Dolphins tight end Nick OLeary, and after last weeks loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he swapped jerseys with defensive end Pat OConnor.

Teammates at St. Rita High in Chicago, Golladay and OConnor have followed similar paths to the NFL. They both went to Mid-American Conference schools OConnor at Eastern Michigan and Golladay at Northern Illinois (after a pit stop at FCS North Dakota) and both were 2017 draft choices of the Lions.

We didnt know each coming into freshman year of high school, but played against each other in college, got drafted by the same team, Golladay said. Thats always been my boy, even in high school.

Along with OConnors jersey and those of Jones and OLeary, Golladay said his collection includes the likes of Jacoby Brissett, Jimmy Ward and Tommylee Lewis.

Golladay played with Ward and Lewis at Northern Illinois, and he spends his offseasons training in Florida with Brissett, Lewis and OLeary (the three of whom were high school teammates at Palm Beach Dwyer High).

Not saying I wouldnt trade jerseys with other people, Golladay said. But I just feel like it just means a little bit more (when its) somebody who I know.

Dwayne The Rock Johnson has ties to Tom Peterson, Portland wrestling and, of course, Salt & Straw – OregonLive

Not only does Dwayne The Rock Johnson have a new ownership stake in the Portland-based Salt & Straw ice cream chain, it turns out the pro wrestler-turned-TV-and-movie star has even more Northwest connections. On Johnsons Twitter page, hes been busy posting about his new hit movie, Jumanji: The Next Level, Salt & Straws Dwanta Claus Holiday Pack ice cream flavors, and the fact that Johnson has ties to such local icons as Tom Peterson and Portland wrestling.

Responding to another Twitter post, Johnson wrote, I lived in Vancouver, WA when my old man wrestled for Portland based wrestling promoter, Don Owens. I practically lived in the old Portland sports arena when I was a kid. Lots of ties to Oregon & Portland in particular.

As if that wasnt enough, Johnson added, in another Twitter post, Haha and another crazy connection to Portland..my uncle, Siva married Tom Petersons (famous local Portland appliance and electronics store owner) daughter, Kathy. Back in the 80s I believe.

Johnsons posts have drawn plenty of responses, including invitations for Johnson to attend a Portland Timbers match, along with a Twitter poster who wrote, Thats some serious old Portland credibility. The only other way you could top it is having been on the Ramblin Rod show as a kid.

As The Oregonian/OregonLive recently reported, Johnson became an investor in Salt & Straw via the Garcia Companies, an investment firm operated by Johnsons ex-wife, Dany Garcia.

Along with his many other talents, Johnson seems to be a gifted salesman, because according to the Salt & Straw website, the $65 Dwanta Claus Holiday Pack, is, at the moment, sold out.

Harsin and the Broncos to face former head coach Chris Peterson in upcoming Las Vegas Bowl – Boise State University The Arbiter Online

The time for the Boise State Broncos to celebrate their Mountain West Championship title has come and gone. The team must now prepare to face the Washington Huskies in the 2019 Mitsubishi Motors Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 21 at 5:30 p.m.

From a record standpoint, Boise State seems to have the upper hand with 12-1 on the season, while Washington trails with 7-5. However, the Huskies case is strengthened with their 45-19 victory over BYU the team that defeated the Broncos 28-25 handing them their single loss of the 2019 season.

The bowl will feature an incomplete Washington offense, missing both senior left tackle Trey Adams and junior tight end Hunter Bryant. In their absence, redshirt junior quarterback Jacob Eason will rely on second-string protection and senior wide receiver Aaron Fuller. Junior tailback Salvon Ahmed also poses a threat to the Broncos as he comes off a 1000-yard rushing season.

Washingtons defense ranks 23rd in the nation, just above Boise State. In this season alone, junior defensive back Elijah Molden has accumulated 70 tackles and three interceptions, and redshirt sophomore outside linebacker Joe Tryon has 40 tackles and 8 sacks.

For deep-rooted Boise State fans, this years bowl selection may feel like dj vu, since the same matchup was seen in the 2012 MAACO Bowl Las Vegas, when the Broncos came up with a 28-26 victory after a nail-biting battle with the Huskies.

Despite the repeat in teams, there is a key difference between then and now: head coach Chris Peterson.

When Boise State defeated Washington in the 2012 Las Vegas Bowl, Peterson was the head coach of the Broncos. This year, however, Peterson is entering the Las Vegas Bowl as head coach of the Huskies, opposing the team he first led to the event.

Peterson was on Boise States coaching staff for 13 seasons, where he served as offensive coordinator from 2001-2005 and head coach from 2006-2013. Peteron left the Broncos in 2014 to be Washingtons head coach, remaining in the position since.

The 2019 Las Vegas Bowl will be Petersons last game with Washington before he steps down. One may say that playing the Broncos in his send-off game is full-circle, while others may consider the situation to be awkward.

At his press conference, Peterson spoke on the connotations of the approaching bowl game and how playing against the Broncos is not ideal.

Obviously, personally speaking, theres a lot of other teams that I would probably like to be playing for this last time, Peterson said.

Current Boise State head coach Bryan Harsin, who worked under Peterson as offensive coordinator from 2006-2010, made it clear that he did not want the implied rivalry to distract from the game itself.

There is an obvious storyline in this game, Harsin said. The most important thing that we all have to consider [is to]not overshadow the players that are actually going to play in the game.

Boise State graduate defensive tackle David Moa heads into the bowl with a perspective not shared by the newer additions to his team. Peterson was directly involved in the recruitment of Moa.

That one opportunity I got to talk to him on the phone, you could just see how special of a person he was through what he was saying I honestly committed right then, on the spot, Moa said.

Moa committed to Boise State on Nov. 21, 2013, less than a month before Petersons departure, but bears no hard feelings toward the coach and looks forward to seeing him on the field.

Senior safety Kekoa Nawahine, who committed nine days before Moa, shares a positive outlook on facing coach Peterson and his Huskies.

I feel like its kind of a poetic ending to my career here at Boise State, Nawahine said.

Despite the excitement of athletes and fans, Harsin and Petersons press conferences shared an overlapping theme of disregarding the stigma.

It is what it is, both coaches said.

A victory in the 2019 Las Vegas Bowl holds great value to each coach Harsin would cap off his winningest season yet, and Peterson would end his coaching career on a high note.

When the Broncos and Huskies take the field, the country will see the effects of Petersons past with the Boise State coaching staff and roster, if any effects at all.

Hosey: Where in the world is Drew Peterson? – DeKalb Daily Chronicle

These Are The Democrats Who Voted Against Impeaching President Trump – BuzzFeed News

WASHINGTON Two Democrats broke with their party and voted against impeaching President Donald Trump Wednesday night.

Reps. Collin Peterson of Minnesota and Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey were the only Democrats who opposed impeaching the president. But Van Drew, the partys most vocal impeachment critic, plans to leave the Democratic Party in the coming days and become a Republican, after Trump made an appeal to him in a meeting last week.

Another Democrat, Maine Rep. Jared Golden, voted yes on impeaching Trump for abuse of power, but voted no on impeaching him for obstruction of Congress. Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, who is running for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020, voted present on both articles.

Van Drew and Peterson were the only Democrats to break with their party on an October vote to formalize the impeachment inquiry. Peterson said in the days leading up to the vote that he would likely oppose the articles of impeachment as well, while Van Drew prepared to leave the party.

A number of Van Drews staff resigned Sunday, writing in a letter that his decision to join the ranks of the Republican party led by Donald Trump does not align with the values we brought to this job when we joined his office.

Peterson said he, too, was approached about switching parties by the highest levels of the Republican party in the lead-up to the impeachment vote, but decided against it. Peterson, one of the most conservative Democrats in the House, was first elected in 1991. He, unlike most of his colleagues, supports giving Trump money to build a wall on the Southern border and is staunchly anti-abortion. He maintains an A rating from the National Rifle Association and beat his Republican opponent by about four points in 2018.

Golden, a first-year Democrat, narrowly defeated a Republican last year and is among the list of frontline Democrats party leadership considers most vulnerable in the upcoming election. In 2016, his district voted for Trump by 10 points.

In a statement Tuesday, Golden said he believed the House had clearly unearthed evidence that Trump abused the power of his office by asking Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his family. This action crossed a clear red line, and in my view, there is no doubt this is an impeachable act, the statement said.

But Golden said he planned to vote against the second article of impeachment because he did not believe the House had met the threshold of high crimes and misdemeanors related to obstruction of Congress.

Though Democrats did not tell members how they should vote on the articles of impeachment, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi worked doggedly in recent weeks to secure moderate votes for the articles that ultimately went to the floor abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

Many progressives and longtime impeachment supporters wanted a third article addressing obstruction of justice and Russian interference, related to former special counsel Robert Muellers report, but many moderates felt it went too far. In an effort to appease members on the fence, Pelosi instead made the call that the House would bring just two articles to the floor.

Still, following the release of the articles of impeachment, several moderate Democrats who had been skeptical of the inquiry including Reps. Josh Gottheimer, Kurt Schrader, Anthony Brindisi, and Ben McAdams met to discuss the possibility of censuring the president instead of impeaching him, according to a Politico report last week. Censuring would formally condemn Trumps actions, without actually sending him to a Senate trial for removal from office.

The group ultimately voted in favor of impeaching the president, though McAdams acknowledged at a press conference that he had hoped for a censure vote instead.

I hoped to find bipartisan common ground to censure the president instead of putting the country through a divisive and lengthy Senate impeachment trial with a predetermined outcome of dismissal, the Utah member said, adding I cannot turn a blind eye, thereby condoning this president and future presidents Republican or Democrat to do the same.

On Tuesday night ahead of the vote, Gabbard who is currently running in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary also said she supported a censure motion and was undecided on how she would vote on the articles of impeachment. Ultimately, she voted present on both articles.

New York Rep. Max Rose, another closely watched moderate Democrat and one of the last to officially support the inquiry, released a statement last weekend announcing that he would vote for both articles.

A President coercing a foreign government into targeting American citizens is not just another example of scorched earth politics, it serves as an invitation to the enemies of the United States to come after any citizen, so long as they disagree with the President. Embarking on an unprecedented effort to obstruct this inquiry doesnt make the facts any less true, the statement read.

Peterson, a Gretna resident, outskates the competition for the game she loves – Omaha World-Herald

Growing up with an older brother can be difficult when it comes to competition. But growing up playing sports with all boys is another beast. For Calie Peterson, both of those things are true.

The 14-year-old has been playing on a travel hockey team since she was 6 years old. Many nights and summers are filled with travel and hockey with not much time for leisure in between, including, for most of that time, being the only girl skating up and down the ice.

Its fun, but it can get tiring at times, Calie said. Sometimes I just want to be home in my own bed, but I like it.

The Petersons passion for hockey came from Calies mother, Stacy, who grew up a hockey fan, and then played in a mens recreation league until Calies older brother, Ethan, was born.

I used to go to all the Lancer games really. Then I tried hockey one year and played on the Metro Classic Hockey League when I was 20. I learned there and then I got pregnant with my son, so I didnt get to play anymore, Stacy said. So then I was like, My kids are going to play hockey.

And thats exactly how it played out. Calie would accompany her mother to Moylan Iceplex for Ethans practices. While Calie would watch Ethan intently on the ice, Stacy, eventually, decided to put Calie on the other ice rink.

I thought I might as well put her in the Learn-to-Skate summer program on the other ice rink, Stacy said.

She was there anyways with me. She picked it up a lot quicker.

From there, Calies passion started to take off. After the Learn-to-Skate program, Calie completed the Initiation Program that year too. Shortly after, Ethan took his younger sister under his wing.

We would shoot pucks in the basement, and we would play PIG but hockey style. It was our own little game and he would always beat me, but I would always call for a rematch, Calie said. He would work on stick handling and faceoffs with me because I was center. He taught me how to skate and we used to roller blade around the driveway to just get a feel for the skates.

At the age of six, Calie played on the U8 Mites boys travel team that played up a level in the U10 Squirt Selection division. At such a young age, kids at school wouldnt believe Calie played hockey, or they just didnt know the sport.

They would be like, Whats hockey? or something like that, Calie said.

While mixing in basketball and softball, Calie played hockey with the boys travel programs up until the U14 leagues, where body checking is allowed.

While on the boys teams, Calie was a key team player by notching the most assists on her teams as well as several Player of the Game awards at numerous tournaments. She used her small stature and blazing speed to her advantage against boys teams especially teams that liked to be physical on the ice.

She was always faster than the boys. They couldnt keep up with her. She was kind of a natural, Stacy said. Ethan had to work at it. She just didnt care. She would push the boys around and push them over. When she played with the boys, they protected her and, sometimes, she protected them. She was always just one of the boys.

The main reason for playing eight years with boys was the limited amount of options when Calie started playing hockey.

Here in Omaha, it has taken a while to take off. We started her in boys because there was so much more there, Stacy said. I mean, the girls, you were 14 years old, but all lumped in with six, seven and eight year olds because didnt have enough girls to make a team.

Now, it practically doubled, at least, in the last three years. Thats why we were so hesitant about moving her to girls until she could make that top level team.

Last season is when the Petersons decided to make a change and move to girls hockey. As a seventh grader, Calie made the Tier II Omaha Lady Junior Lancer U19 team the top girls team in Omaha.

While starting at center, the 5-foot-1 center finished with 20 goals and over 15 assists in her first season.

It was definitely different. I never did like playing with girls my age because they werent as advanced, Calie said. The speed kind of stayed the same by playing with older girls, but the boys are different.

Between the two, Calie misses the play on the ice with the boys, but loves the comradery of the girls team.

I like (playing with the boys) a lot more. Its a lot more fun, Calie said. The girls are more of a family, but the boys are always trying to compete against each other. The girls pick each other up more.

Calie continued that high level of play into this season. During the Colorado Cup Tournament, she was awarded Playmaker of the Game. Then at the Chicago Girls Winter Classic, Calie finished the tournament ranked 17th of 529 girls in total points for all divisions.

In April, Calie attended the USA Hockey Central District Player Development Camp tryouts and then she was later selected to the week-long USA Hockey Central District Player Development Camp. Both camps were in Wisconsin.

In July, she competed in the 2019 Cornhusker State Games and State Games of America on boys teams winning two Gold medals and one Silver medal. At the Cornhusker State Games, Calie tallied three goals and three assists over the weekend to win the Gold medal, while it was her first experience with body checking.

The bench went crazy. The kid was small too, Calie said. He was probably a little smaller than me, but I wanted to do it again. (My brother) was always a hitter. He would rather hit than play the puck.

Once again, she was also the only female competing. Her performance led to her being awarded the 2019 Cornhusker State Games Youth Female Athlete of the Year on Nov. 7th. Winning the award automatically nominated her for the National Youth Female Athlete of the Year for the State Games of America.

I didnt realize it was that big of a deal, Calie said.

From there, Calie was selected as one of the top 68 girls in the country to attend the STX 68 in Chicago in August which is a four-day Premier Major Bantam Camp that tests strength, conditioning and on-ice skills.

With the top 68 boys and top 68 girls selected from all over the United States, Calies team finished undefeated during the combine, while, personally, she tied for seventh place in total points scored. Furthermore, her biggest accomplishment was being ranked first overall out of the 68 girls for the on-ice testing and was named the fastest skater in the 30-meter backwards skate.

While going to camps or playing in games is the way to showcase yourself to friends, family, coaches or scouts, its the work thats put in when nobody is around that separates many athletes. After attending camps in April, Calie spent the entire 10 weeks of summer working out on and off the ice at Moylan Iceplex with NXT Level Hockey Academy for four hours a day and five days a week.

When I went to the Central Districts Hockey Camp and the STX 68 Camp, the whole time they talked about college, Peterson said. And I know if I want to play at the college level then I have to start the little things early otherwise its not going to be an option.

Shes never complained once about getting up at 6 a.m. for other things because shes had to do it for hockey and it makes her more structured, Stacy added.

The friendships shes made has trumped about any kind of sport. While some current teammates travel from Des Moines to Omaha for practice or other cities for games, Calie has traveled to Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Colorado and St. Louis to name a few for camps and tournaments.

Shes developed relationships with other players from about any place in the United States and even Canada. Wherever her future takes her, theres a good chance a person she knows will be within distance.

Many East Coast prep schools have inquired about Calie, but the Petersons would prefer her closer to home. Calie wants to move up to the AAA division for her next step, but the two closest teams are in Sioux Falls or Chicago.

This season, she has totaled over 30 goals and more than 20 assists in only 22 games to help the Lady Junior Lancers be ranked 10th in the nation. Its another milestone for Calie to add to her long list of awards and accomplishments. Even if she doesnt know how long the list really is.

Shes never shown me all of them!, Calie said.

Weve got to keep her humble, Stacy added. She knows but she doesnt think about it.

AP’s road to 1000 yards is hard, but doable – NBCSports.com

Redskins running back Adrian Peterson remains on a steady ascent up the NFL all-time rushing records, but for the 2019 season, getting to 1,000 yards remains the goal.

"Ill get there," Peterson said earlier this week.

Peterson will go into Sunday's game against the Eagleswith 718 rush yards, so he needs to average 94 yards-per-game in the last three games to get to 1,000 on the season.

He reached that milestone last year in one of the more remarkable comeback stories in recent NFL history. He was unsigned as training camps opened around the league and only came to Washington after an injury to rookie RB Derrius Guice in the preseason.

From there, he became the focal point of an ugly yet often effective Redskins offense. After Alex Smith went down with a broken leg, Peterson was all the Redskins had, and he nearly willed Washington to a near miraculous Wild Card spot.

This year, there will be no miracles and no Wild Card spot. At 3-10, Washington hasbeen mostly awful and unless they get a win in their three remaining games will post their worst record since 2013.

For 34-year-old Peterson, however, hes still playing at a strong level, and the 1,000 yard mark almost gives the last portion of the season some semblance of meaning.

It wont be easy though.

The Eagles give up 90 rush yards per-game, the third-best run defense in the NFL. In their last eight games, Philadelphia has given up 94 or more rush yards only four times.

After that, the Redskins face the Giants and the Cowboys. Both clubs give Peterson a chance to hit 1,000.

New York ranks 20th in the NFL in rush defense, giving up 114 rush yards-per-game. The Cowboys rank 19th against the run, allowing 110 yards-per-game.

Should Peterson get to Dallas in Week 17 needing a big game on the ground to get to 1,000, he could get it. As the Cowboys have slumped in the second half of the year, so too has their rush defense. Dallas has given up 100 rush yards in each of their last seven games, and even worse, the Cowboys have given up more than 150 rush yards twice during that span.

Ask Redskins coach Bill Callahan and it seems like Peterson will get every opportunity for yards.

"Id love for it to happen, especially for him. He did it again last year," Callahan said this week. "He did it under some really tough circumstances."

Last year marked Peterson's eighth time going for more than 1,000 yards, but his first since 2015. If he can get there this year, it would be his first time rushing for 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons since 2012 and 2013. In 2012, Peterson actually rushed for more than 2,000 yards.

What would make 1,000 yards in 2019 even more remarkable? Peterson is 34.

In the Super Bowl era only one running back has run for more than 1,000 yards at age 34. His name is John Riggins, and he did so in a Redskins uniform in 1983.

Knowing Peterson, his goal for 2020 will be the same: 1,000 yards. Should that happen, Peterson would tie a record as the oldest NFL running back to gain 1,000 yards in a season.

The record holder at age 35? Riggins.

Champaign moms to open preschool that will ‘immerse children in nature, play’ – Champaign/Urbana News-Gazette

CHAMPAIGN A love of the outdoors came naturally, you might say, for sisters Caity Peterson and Ellen Saathoff.

Their dad, Brian Deal, is a landscape architecture professor at the University of Illinois. And their moms father, Bruce Hannon, is an emeritus geology professor and a longtime environmental activist.

They spent their childhood hiking in Allerton Park, helping their grandfather plant burr oaks and playing outside all summer.

Now they want to share their passion with a younger generation at a new nature school, a preschool and after-school program that will immerse children in nature, play and being outside, Saathoff said.

Thats how we were brought up, Saathoff said. It was just a big part of our childhood, a big part of what we want to pass on for our own kids and for other kids.

Sprouts Art and Nature School will open in January in a remodeled 1924 house on a tree-filled lot at 1403 W. Springfield Ave., C. An open house is scheduled for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

The two women, who both hold UI degrees in early-childhood education, opened a child-care service in Petersons house in 2014. Saathoff was pregnant with her first child, and Peterson had taken some time off from teaching kindergarten at South Side Elementary School after having her third child.

They saw the venture as a chance to raise their own children and still work in the field they loved.

Theyve been developing a nature-based curriculum ever since, and now weve got the space to match, said Saathoff, mom to Freddy, 3, and Richie, 5.

The curriculum features lessons on the nature of central Illinois, with units on bugs, trees, birds and flowers.

We believe in the importance of imagination, making connections, play and authentic nature experiences over teacher-led direct academic instruction, said Peterson, who has three children, Mae, 7, George, 9 and Violet, 10.

Their husbands Derek Peterson and Joe Saathoff worked with Brian Deal to renovate the basement for the original preschool, and they are again the loving builders behind this place, Ellen Saathoff said Monday at the new Sprouts school.

Their mom, Claire Deal, is the official substitute; she went back to college to get the remaining credit hours she needed.

We couldnt do this without them, Saathoff said.

Displayed around the new center are their students nature-inspired works of art watercolors of leaves, butterflies and rain-streaked windows; a garland with caterpillars and other insects made out of colorful scrap materials; acrylic pendants with pinecones and evergreen cuttings inside.

Most of the books tie into the nature theme, including the sisters childhood favorite, the Caldecott Award-winner Roxaboxen. The book is about children who build a magical community out of ordinary objects like pebbles, sticks and boxes and their imaginations.

Its just such a good example, Saathoff said. Everything they need is already here.

Outside, they set up a mud kitchen with an old sink for making mud pies. A shelving unit was filled with twigs and other natural objects that the children use to make up elaborate games. A path encircles the yard, leading to a butterfly garden popular with monarchs and a real garden that produced squash and watermelon this year.

Most striking is a giant birds nest, with a metal frame built by the welding class at Central High School. Its designed for kids to climb inside and build their own nest with sticks and other materials.

In the spirit of sustainability, the sisters have tried to repurpose as much as they can.

The wood tables were crafted from the houses original framework. Outside, a table and chairs were built out of tree stumps. The deck had to be replaced, so the old lumber was used for a boardwalk.

They chose the house in part because its two blocks from Westview Elementary School so they can walk to pick up their kids.

Its not new construction. Its covered with trees and its a huge lot, in town, which is so rare, Saathoff said.

Sprouts will have a morning preschool, an extended-day preschool and an after-school program for school-aged children. It will have room for 12 preschoolers ages 2 to 5, and 20 kids altogether.

One of our goals is to build a community of people who believe in raising the next generation of environmentalists. Saathoff said.
