NEWARK, N.J. -- Cappie Pondexter had 21 points and 12 rebounds, Plenette Pierson scored 17 points, and the New York Liberty rallied to beat the Sparks, 73-71, on Sunday.
Essence Carson scored 14 points, including 11 during a 21-3 run in the third quarter that gave the Liberty (12-17) the lead after it trailed by 14 points in the second half.
Kristi Toliver scored 17 points, Candace Parker had 14 points and 15 rebounds, and rookie Nneka Ogwumike had 13 points for the Sparks (20-10), who remained two games ahead of San Antonio for second place in the West. The Silver Stars lost, 81-62, to Minnesota earlier Sunday.
New York's win, coupled with Chicago's 82-77 loss at Connecticut, moved the Liberty half a game ahead of the Sky for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Carson's three-pointer tied the score at 70-70 with 48 seconds left, and Pondexter made two free throws 26 seconds later to put the Liberty ahead, 72-70.
Ebony Hoffman made one of two free throws for the Sparks to make it 72-71 with 15 seconds left. On the ensuing inbounds play, the Sparks double-teamed Pondexter and tied her up when she received the pass near half court, forcing a jump ball between her and the Sparks' DeLisha Milton-Jones.
The Sparks grabbed the tipped ball and called time out. Toliver then missed a three-point shot with about five seconds left; Pondexter corralled the loose ball, was fouled and made one of two from the line. Parker got the ball and when she dribbled, it was knocked away by Pondexter as time expired. After a lengthy video review, the officials ruled there was no time remaining when the ball went out of bounds.
After trailing by 15 in the second quarter, New York cut the deficit to 48-36 at halftime.
Then Ogwumike made one of two free throws and scored a three-point play to give the Sparks their biggest lead of the second half at 52-38 with about 8 1/2 minutes remaining in the third quarter.
The Liberty then went on its big run to take a four-point lead into the fourth, with Carson's jumper with 1:38 left in the period tying the score at 55-55 and her go-ahead basket 53 seconds later giving New York its first lead of the game.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- Cappie Pondexter had 21 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, Plenette Pierson scored 17 points, and the New York Liberty rallied to beat the Sparks 73-71 Sunday.
Essence Carson scored 14 points, including 11 during a 21-3 run in the third quarter that gave the Liberty (12-17) the lead after they trailed by 14 points. New York also trailed by 15 points in the first half.
''We fought hard,'' said Pondexter, who also had eight assists. ''At one point we were down almost 16 points. I told the guys at halftime that if we fight back and be victorious, it's going to feel even better than (just) winning.''
Coupled with Chicago's 82-77 loss at Connecticut, New York moved a half-game ahead of Chicago for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Liberty have five games remaining - at home against Washington on Wednesday, followed by road games against the Mystics, San Antonio and Tulsa, and a home date against the Shock in the season finale on Sept. 22.
''We've got to play like we have to win every game,'' Liberty coach John Whisenant said. ''If we get into the playoffs with a three-game series and we play as hard as we did tonight, there won't be anybody more athletically gifted like we played tonight.''
Kristi Toliver scored 17 points, Candace Parker had 14 points and 15 rebounds, and rookie Nneka Ogwumike added 13 points for the Sparks (20-10). Los Angeles, which has lost four of its last five, remained two games ahead of San Antonio for second place in the West. The Silver Stars lost 81-62 to Minnesota earler Sunday.
''We have plenty of stuff to move forward with in terms of just trying to be the best playoff team we can be,'' Sparks coach Carol Ross said. ''We still have more business to take care of before we get to the fun stuff.''
Carson's 3-pointer tied the score at 70-all with 48 seconds remaining, and Pondexter made two free throws about 26 seconds later to put the Liberty ahead.
Ebony Hoffman made 1 of 2 free throws for Los Angeles with 15 seconds remaining. On the ensuing inbounds play, the Sparks double-teamed Pondexter and tied her up when she received the pass near half-court, forcing a jump ball between her and the Sparks' DeLisha Milton-Jones.

Liberty Ross Stomps Past Kristen Stewart Cheating Scandal, Walks Fashion Week Runway
C.T. "Rusty" Hight, known for his wide-ranging talents in roles ranging from a Liberty County jurist to a master gardener, died Wednesday. He was 65.
Hight learned he had a "small speck of cancer" five weeks before it took over his body, said his sister, Nelda Zbranek.
But she and others who knew him will never forget how he prayed for "God to help him do the right thing" each time he put on his black robe to serve as the 75th state district judge from 2002 to 2010.
And he didn't mind trading that robe for an apron. He loved to cook up a pot of his award-winning jelly made with the tart juice from marble-sized mayhaws, a native fruit found in East Texas swamps.
He would spend hours collecting just the right mayhaws to simmer over the stove in a rustic cabin in his backyard in Dayton.
Over the last two decades, his jelly was often pronounced the blue ribbon winner at the annual Mayhaw Festival in Daisetta.
His gardening skills were also apparent in the bountiful supply of vegetables he grew in his backyard, some so large that they looked like they could set a world record.
He also served many years as a Dayton school trustee.
One of his proudest moments came when he was able to hand a diploma to his daughter, Laura, who was still recovering after emerging from a 4-month coma.
She had been badly injured in a car accident that claimed the life of a school friend two years earlier. Medical personnel had not expected her to live.

TUCSON, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Liberty Star Uranium & Metals Corp. (Liberty Star or the Company)(LBSR: OTCQB) is pleased to announce that scout drilling on Target 1 (of 12), Hole #1 reached and exceeded its planned depth of 1650 feet (August 28th, NR 137). The drill hole bottomed at 1696 feet and was capped so that it could undergo further drilling next spring. 166 core boxes containing 5 core samples each (10 feet) were collected and samples from the split core are being prepared for shipment to the MEG sample prep lab near Reno, NV, and then on to the ALS Group certified assay facility in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Readings from an XRF analyzer and high definition photographs as well as other technical measurement data gatherers are being transmitted to the Companys Tucson headquarters where they will be analyzed.
Further drilling this season was ended due to oncoming winter conditions including very high winds (gusting to 131 MPH) and heavy rain combined with low to zero visibility occurring in both the Lake Iliamna region and Port Alsworth, making fixed wing aircraft or helicopter transportation impossible. Scout drilling will begin again on additional targets in May 2013.
Comments James A. Briscoe, Liberty Stars CEO and Chief Geologist: This initial drilling program fulfilled several of our goals: First, to establish a camp we can continue to work from for many years, second, to re-establish our prominence in the local community, third, to fulfill Alaska State Mining Claim assessment work requirements, and lastly, to start scout drilling that I believe will lead to the eventual discovery of a porphyry copper and gold mineral body.
James A. Briscoe James A. Briscoe, Professional Geologist, AZ CA CEO/Chief Geologist Liberty Star Uranium & Metals Corp.
About Liberty Stars Big Chunk Super Project:

Forward-Looking Statements
Statements in this news release that are not historical are forward-looking statements. Forward-looking statements in this news release include our drilling plans, that drilling will recommence in May 2013; that we can work from our camp for many years; that analysis will be completed and may lead to a copper and gold body discovery. Factors which may delay or prevent these forward-looking statements from being realized include: the failure of our exploration program to identify targets; we may not be able to raise sufficient funds to complete our intended exploration, keep our properties or carry on operations; we may be unable to continue exploration due to weather, logistical problems, labor or equipment problems or hazards even if funds are available. Despite encouraging data there may be no commercially exploitable mineralization on our properties. New York jumped out to a big lead and coasted to a needed win against the injury-plagued Phoenix Mercury. The Liberty were also able to rest their starters and give the reserves some valuable playing time.
Plenette Pierson scored 17 points on 8-for-13 shooting to lead New York's balanced offense and the Liberty beat the Mercury 87-59 Wednesday night.
Kara Braxton and Alex Montgomery added 12 points each, Nicole Powell had 11 and Cappie Pondexter 10 to help New York (11-16) move a half-game ahead of Chicago for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Liberty host the Sky on Friday night.
''We talked about Phoenix is out of the race, so two things could happen,'' New York coach John Whisenant said. ''We could let them go out and play loose ... or we could attack them defensively early and try to get them down, and that's what we did. I thought our players maintained their intensity pretty much throughout.''
The Liberty got off to a fast start and led 21-5 less than 6 minutes into the game. After Phoenix cut the deficit to 10 by the end of the first quarter, New York took control with a 10-0 run that doubled the lead to 33-13 less than 3 minutes into the second. The lead was 22 at halftime and swelled to 32 in the third.
New York finished shooting 47 percent (36 for 76) from the field, including 9 for 22 (41 percent) from 3-point range. The Liberty outrebounded the Mercury 40-34 and finished with a season-high 27 assists - led by Pondexter's eight.
The Liberty have won two of three on their six-game homestand. After facing Chicago, they host Los Angeles on Sunday and Washington next Wednesday. The Liberty then have three road games before finishing at home against Tulsa on Sept. 22.
''We're trying to make a playoff push and our focus right now is to win the home games that are coming up, Pondexter said. ''We did a great job tonight. We came out in the game, everyone had an opportunity to play and everyone scored. It was a great team effort.''

The restrooms at the bustling Liberty Market in Gilbert's Heritage District are candidates in another kind of national election as they vie with nine others across the country for the title of best restroom in the U.S.
People can vote for Arizona's only entry in the 2012 Cintas' America's Best Restroom Contest until Oct. 26.
Liberty Market restrooms | Best bathrooms in Valley
"I think it's a tiny thing for the state of Arizona. But it would be a nice thing if we won," said Gilbert restaurateur and entrepreneur Joe Johnston, one of four partners of the restaurant.
Once a grocery store that played a major role in the town when Gilbert was called "the alfalfa-hay shipping capital of the United States," the Liberty Market is now an urban bistro that blends retro with modern. Its espresso bar, dessert case with multilayered cream cakes, pizza oven and full kitchen draw the crowds. Liberty Market is open 7 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday.
The five restroom stalls -- four of them unisex -- also see a lot of traffic, but they remain very clean.
"We clean them very, very frequently," Johnston said. "They were designed first of all to be very clean and maintainable."
Johnston, his partners and his older son James each got a crack at designing the stalls with their own creativity.
Johnston's design incorporates his love of Vespa scooters and the native Italian lifestyle they represent. There's a Vespa tire on the wall and behind the door is a photoshopped picture of his wife, Cindy, and his son riding a Vespa on a street in Italy.

Carl Torbush, Libertys assistant head coach, handled the Tuesday presser and will take care of any other media obligations this week.
Though Gill will be missed, his absence wont have a huge affect on the Flames game prep for the Spartans, Torbush said.
Itll go on business as usual when we get out on the field, Torbush said. Weve got a practice schedule. We know exactly where to be. During practice, its not that big a deal. I think its the camaraderie, the leadership that Turner brings dealing with the issues you deal with as a head football coach. But like I said, well be fine during practice.
* Liberty linebacker Nick Sigmon, who took a full-speed knee to the ear hole in the second quarter of Saturdays loss at Wake Forest, will be game-time decision for Saturdays game. Sigmon desperately wanted back into the game Saturday but the training staff said no. Concussion symptoms often arent immediately evident after taking a hit like that. Sometimes, its two or three days before the symptoms truly show. Im not saying thats the case with Sigmon; players have Monday off, so the coaches werent sure of his status as of noon Tuesday.
If Sigmon cant go, the Flames will go with a mix of Marques Jenkins and Scott Hyland at the Mike against Norfolk State. Jenkins came in and played extremely well in Sigmons place at Wake Forest, intercepting a pass and making three tackles. Hes preparing for Saturdays game as if hell be the starter. Even if he doesnt start, Jenkins will still get plenty of playing time as the Flames like to roll six linebackers in and out of the game.
If youre one or two in a two-deep, you have to prepare like that, Jenkins said. Its way better to be in there prepared in what youre doing, compared to thinking youre not going to play too much. Its just better to be prepared well for every situation.
Jenkins bounced around at various linebacker spots since transferring to Liberty after a year at Ole Miss, where he was a member of the scout team. Jenkins had 22 career tackles in three seasons coming into the season.
* Defensive tackle Francis Bah is also dinged, Torbush said, and defensive coordinator Robert Wimberly said Bah has a leg injury that will be worth watching as the week progresses. If I had to bet, Id say Bah plays. That injury will be more about Bahs pain tolerance than a head injury like Sigmons.
* Under the previous coaching staff, the Flames took Sunday off and began the week with a Monday evening practice. Under Gill, the Flames meet on Sunday to break down the film of the previous days game. Torbush said the goal is to kill the game, before taking a day off so the players are fresh and ready to go for the next weeks game prep on Tuesday.

LIBERTY TWP.
Theres new leadership at the Liberty Twp. Fire Department after three firefighters moved up the ladder to become lieutenants.
Fire Chief Paul Stumpf, along with township trustees and families, pinned on new badges during a promotional ceremony Sept. 4 for firefighter/paramedics Chad Canupp, Cathleen Marksteiner and Matthew Owen, all of Liberty Twp.
Stumpf said there are about 98 members on the fire department roster, and the latest promotions bring the number of lieutenants to nine.
Well have one (lieutenant) on each shift at each station, Stumpf said, a long-time goal of the fire department. So theres no question of leadership. They are responsible for that unit and make sure reports are completed in a timely fashion.
Along with the extra duties, the three new fire lieutenants will receive a 7.5 percent increase to their hourly wage from $22.77 to $24.48 per hour, according to the township.
The promotional process includes a written test, an assessment center evaluation by regional chief officers and an oral interview by a local committee, according to Stumpf.
The lieutenants have a combined 36 years of service to Liberty Twp., and all have been serving in the full-time capacity of firefighter/paramedic since 2005.
Canupp has helped develop the departments SWAT Medic Program, which places tactically-trained medics on calls with the Butler County SWAT Team, according to Liberty Twp. officials.
Canupp is a member of the Butler County Technical Rescue Team, and also responds to large-scale national disasters as part of the Ohio Task Force One Urban Search and Rescue Team.
