Liberty rally for 75-68 win over Mystics

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Cappie Pondexter had 30 points and 11 rebounds as the New York Liberty rallied from a nine-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the Washington Mystics 75-68 Sunday.

Nicole Powell scored 10 of her 18 points in the fourth and Essence Carson added 15 points as New York (14-17) won its third straight. The Liberty began the day with a one-game lead over Chicago for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Sky play at Phoenix later.

Jasmine Thomas scored 16 points and Monique Currie had 12 to lead the Washington (5-27), which has lost 11 straight.

Powell's 3-pointer tied the score at 63 with 2:50 left and her short jumper gave the Liberty a 67-65 lead with 1:34 to play.

After a miss by Currie, Kara Braxton scored on a layup off a nice pass from Pondexter to make it 69-65 with 48 seconds left.

Matee Ajavon missed a short jumper and Pondexter hit two three throws. Thomas's 3-pointer made it 71-68 with 19 seconds to go, but the Mystics got no closer.

Washington outscored New York 19-12 in the third quarter and built a five-point lead as the Liberty hit just 5-of-22 field goals.

Washington played without leading scorer Crystal Langhorne (14.7 ppg), who left Friday's loss to Atlanta with a left foot sprain, and Noelle Quinn (6.5 ppg), out with an injured right shoulder.

Boxing legend Ali accepts Liberty Medal

The Liberty Medal, one of Philadelphia's highest honors, is bestowed upon those of "courage and conviction who strive to secure the blessings of liberty to people around the globe."

Past recipients include Nelson Mandela, Sandra Day O'Connor and Steven Spielberg.

Ali, 70, was honored not only for being a boxing champion but for championing religious freedom, freedom of speech and racial equality.

Speakers at the ceremony outside the Constitution Center included basketball great Dikembe Mutombo, actor Terrence Howard and Ali's daughter, boxer Laila Ali. But perhaps the most moving speech was given by Joe Louis Barrow II, son of legendary boxer Joe Louis.

"Knowing [Ali] since I was a little boy has given me a ringside seat to history," Barrow said.

Barrow spoke of how his father had volunteered to serve in World War II whereas Ali refused to serve in the Vietnam War, citing his religious beliefs.

"In different ways, you both defended the ideal of the Constitution," he said. "And time has shown you were both on the right side of history."

Barrow choked up as he recalled how on the day of his father's funeral, Ali performed a magic trick just for him.

"You put your large hand on my very small shoulder, and on that day, far away from the bright lights, you gave a scared little boy the courage to face the challenges of a lifetime," he said. "For that, I can simply say, 'Thank you. I love you.' "

Because Parkinson's disease has made it difficult for Ali to speak, his wife, Lonnie, spoke on his behalf.

Liberty Trail to include nod to Richmond's Slave Trail

The organizer of a proposed Liberty Trail through Richmond agreed this week to incorporate several key sites from the city's Slave Trail, including Lumpkin's Jail and the African Burial Ground, after a backlash from the Richmond Slave Trail Commission.

Valentine Richmond History Center Director William J. Martin, who is spearheading the Liberty Trail project, also agreed to include the commission in the development of the trail.

Del. Delores L. McQuinn, D-Richmond, the commission's chairwoman, last week said the draft map of the Liberty Trail was unacceptable and called for inclusion of the Slave Trail.

"It is a part of Richmond's history," McQuinn said. "It should under no circumstances be left out."

Martin said he and other participants in the Greater Richmond Chamber's Liberty Trail project "probably moved too quickly" to create the trail.

Martin called the exclusion of all slave sites an oversight, adding that he always planned for the Slave Trail to be included on maps. In the past 20 years, Richmond has unearthed its history as one of the nation's largest slave trade markets.

When the Slave Trail Commission first saw the proposed Liberty Trail map on Sept. 6, members expressed frustration that it did not incorporate important slave-history sites and did not mention the Slave Trail. They also said they were disappointed not to have been consulted in the creation of the Liberty Trail map, which circles through the Jackson Ward Historic District and past the Maggie Walker House.

Chamber members were inspired to create the trail during the chamber's InterCity trip to Boston this year, where they toured that city's Freedom Trail. Martin said last week that the 6-mile Liberty Trail course had been intended to link 14 of Richmond's 17 National Historic Landmarks and was designed to complement the Slave Trail.

Martin said he apologized in the Wednesday meeting with McQuinn, which was also attended by City Councilwoman Cynthia I. Newbille, a commission member, and city tourism coordinator Anedra Bourne.

Newbille could not be reached for comment Thursday. Bourne, who delivered the maps to the commission, said she was not involved in planning the Liberty Trail.

Liberty 75, Mystics 62

UpdatedSep 12, 2012 11:01 PM ET

Trailing late in the third quarter of a game they needed to win, the New York Liberty picked up their defensive intensity and ran away from the Washington Mystics.

Cappie Pondexter scored 22 points to lead the Liberty to a 75-62 victory over the last-place Mystics on Wednesday night. Nicole Powell had 15 points and Kia Vaughn added 10 points and 10 rebounds to help New York (13-17) finish 4-2 on a six-game homestand - including two wins against Washington.

The Liberty also moved a half-game ahead of Chicago for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

''It was an ugly win, but I'm glad we pulled it out in the fourth quarter,'' Pondexter said. ''We focused a little more, we began to help each other. I thought we rebounded well, forced them to make tough jump shots.''

Pondexter praised Vaughn's play in the final quarter, when the center and Plenette Pierson had eight points apiece to help New York outscore Washington 19-7 in the period. Vaughn had her first double-double of the season.

''I thought she played great down the stretch, she was confident,'' Pondexter said. ''The last two games we actually were talking about that baseline jumper, where she's great at. She focused in on doing it ... especially in the fourth quarter. I'm happy she was finally able to display the kind of basketball she's been trying.''

Monique Currie scored a season-high 24 points for Washington (5-25), which has lost nine straight. The Mystics dropped to 1-15 on the road this season, with their lone win against the Liberty on July 13 in the last game before the league's monthlong Olympic break.

''We played well throughout the game except for the fourth quarter,'' Currie said. ''We got cold and the Liberty were able to take advantage of that.''

Liberty 73, Sparks 71

UpdatedSep 9, 2012 9:07 PM ET

Cappie Pondexter had 21 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, Plenette Pierson scored 17 points, and the New York Liberty rallied to beat the Sparks 73-71 Sunday.

Essence Carson scored 14 points, including 11 during a 21-3 run in the third quarter that gave the Liberty (12-17) the lead after they trailed by 14 points. New York also trailed by 15 points in the first half.

''We fought hard,'' said Pondexter, who also had eight assists. ''At one point we were down almost 16 points. I told the guys at halftime that if we fight back and be victorious, it's going to feel even better than (just) winning.''

Coupled with Chicago's 82-77 loss at Connecticut, New York moved a half-game ahead of Chicago for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Liberty have five games remaining - at home against Washington on Wednesday, followed by road games against the Mystics, San Antonio and Tulsa, and a home date against the Shock in the season finale on Sept. 22.

''We've got to play like we have to win every game,'' Liberty coach John Whisenant said. ''If we get into the playoffs with a three-game series and we play as hard as we did tonight, there won't be anybody more athletically gifted like we played tonight.''

Kristi Toliver scored 17 points, Candace Parker had 14 points and 15 rebounds, and rookie Nneka Ogwumike added 13 points for the Sparks (20-10). Los Angeles, which has lost four of its last five, remained two games ahead of San Antonio for second place in the West. The Silver Stars lost 81-62 to Minnesota earler Sunday.

''We have plenty of stuff to move forward with in terms of just trying to be the best playoff team we can be,'' Sparks coach Carol Ross said. ''We still have more business to take care of before we get to the fun stuff.''

Carson's 3-pointer tied the score at 70-all with 48 seconds remaining, and Pondexter made two free throws about 26 seconds later to put the Liberty ahead.

Liberty Ross: "I Was Totally Terrified" Before Alexander Wang Runway Show

Liberty Ross had everybody fooled during Alexander Wang's New York Fashion Week show Saturday.

Her calm, cool and collected -- not to mention, extraordinarily fierce -- exterior belied some serious nerves as she strutted her stuff during a surprise trip down the runway.

PHOTOS: Kristen and Rupert's July 17 fling

"I was totally terrified," Ross, 33, confessed to The Cut at the show's after party. "I hadn't actually been out of my house for seven weeks so I was really anxious. But it felt amazing." (Ross' pal, and the man of the hour, Alexander Wang, said asking the model to take part in his show was a no-brainer. He told the fashion site he invited her "Because I love her and I support her.")

PHOTOS: Kristen and Rupert's road to infidelity

While the British stunner's claims she's been a recluse recently were a bit exaggerated (Ross has been photographed out and about near her Los Angeles home over the last month or so), she's still reeling after learning in late July that her husband, director Rupert Sanders, cheated on her with his Snow White and the Huntsman star, Kristen Stewart.

Together for ten years, Ross and Sanders, 41, have two children together, Skyla, 7, and Tennyson, 5. Currently, their marital status is still very much up in the air.

As a source close to the couple recently told Us Weekly, "It's too early to tell what will happen with them."

PHOTOS: Women who've been cheated on

Meanwhile, Stewart is getting back to work as well; the Twilight star made her first public, post-scandal appearance Thursday night when she attended an On the Road screening at the Toronto Film Festival.
