Pierson, Liberty close out season with 91-74 win

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- Plenette Pierson had 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists as the New York Liberty beat the Tulsa Shock 91-74 on Saturday.

Essence Carson, who left with an apparent leg injury in the fourth quarter, had 18 points and and Cappie Pondexter scored 17 as New York (15-19) finished the regular season 9-8 at home. The Liberty will take on Connecticut in the first round of the playoffs.

''Tulsa's three guards they had out there gave us trouble and I think we contained that in the second half, which allowed us to be better offensively,'' Pondexter said. ''Defense definitely gave us that aggressive edge that we need and that we played with all season.''

Ivory Latta had 16 points and six rebounds for the Shock (9-24), who already have their best record in three seasons since moving from Detroit. Tulsa, which was a combined 9-59 the last two years, dropped to 3-13 on the road heading into the season finale at Indiana on Sunday.

Tulsa led by 10 at the half, and got 14 points, four rebounds and four assists from Riquna Williams.

''We played a really good first half and we came out aggressive,'' Shock coach Gary Kloppenburg said. ''We were going inside-out, we were getting shots and they stepped their defense up in the second half. We were in a lot of trouble getting good looks. They (The Liberty) came out with a lot of energy wanting to win their last home game.''

The Liberty secured a playoff berth earlier in the week, and that may have been the cause of a slow start vs. the Shock. On Thursday, when Chicago was eliminated with a loss to Atlanta, New York clinched a spot minutes after losing by double digits at Tulsa.

They did so in the second half, outscoring the Shock by 27 points. The Liberty finished with four players in scoring double figures, including Kia Vaughn (14), who also had nine rebounds.

Shock-Liberty Preview

The New York Liberty clinched a playoff spot despite coming up short against the Tulsa Shock earlier this week. After that loss, they're all the more eager to go into the postseason on a winning note.

The Liberty look to avoid a third consecutive defeat as they close out the regular season Saturday against the visiting Shock, who can extend their longest winning streak in three seasons and sweep this home-and-home set.

Despite a 14-19 record, New York earned its third straight playoff berth Thursday when Chicago was eliminated with a loss to Atlanta. The Liberty could have clinched the postseason spot on their own but fell 78-66 to Tulsa.

Getting back home could help New York regroup. The Liberty have taken four of five at the Prudential Center, where they've outscored the Shock (9-23) by an average of 19.0 points during a three-game winning streak in the series.

"We need to go into the playoffs feeling good," said guard Cappie Pondexter, who ranks near the top of the league with 20.5 points per game. "It's our last regular season home game so we need to give our fans something as we head in to the playoffs."

New York, set to square off with Eastern Conference champion Connecticut in the semifinals, knows it needs to pick up the pace. The Liberty averaged 74.3 points during a season high-tying three-game winning streak but have since been limited to 66 apiece in the back-to-back losses.

"We have just got to focus on our stuff," forward Kara Braxton said. "We need to click on all cylinders, rebound the ball, we've got to put in easy chippers, box out and contain pressure - which is a lot of stuff but we are going to work on it the next couple of days before we go up to Connecticut."

Tulsa, in contrast, is playing its best basketball in a long while. The Shock have won three in a row for their longest run since 2009, when the franchise was located in Detroit.

With the year coming to a close, Tulsa is starting to look towards 2013. One of its biggest offseason priorities is bringing back guard Temeka Johnson, who's averaging 12.4 points in her first year with the club.

"It's been a very difficult season, something I've never experienced," said Johnson, who scored a season-high 26 points Thursday. "We've lived the highs and lows but you always want to make a difference in terms of turning things around. There's an upside (to this organization) and I may just be around to see it."

Liberty’s Maffei Says Karmazin Could Be Replaced at Sirius

By Alex Sherman - 2012-09-20T16:42:16Z

Sirius XM Radio Inc. (SIRI) doesnt need Mel Karmazin to succeed, said Liberty Media Corp. Chief Executive Officer Greg Maffei, addressing speculation his company seeks the ouster of the satellite-radio carriers CEO.

While Karmazin has done a great job running Sirius, plenty of people could replace him, Maffei said today at a Goldman Sachs Group Inc. conference in New York. Karmazin, whose contract ends Dec. 31, said Sept. 12 his instincts told him Liberty didnt need him at Sirius.

Liberty, which according to Maffei holds about 49.6 percent of Sirius shares, has informed the Federal Communications Commission it intends to take control of the company. Liberty Chairman John Malone said in July he plans to spin off the stake in New York-based Sirius, a move Karmazin said might increase his interest in staying.

Its unclear whether Karmazin wants to lead Sirius, which has gained 37 percent this year in New York trading through yesterday, under Libertys management, Maffei said.

Karmazin, who received $10.7 million in salary and bonus last year according to data compiled by Bloomberg, said this month that Liberty may not want to retain him because hes expensive.

Patrick Reilly, a Sirius spokesman, didnt immediately return a phone message today.

Liberty, based in Englewood, Colorado, probably wont increase its stake in Sirius past 50 percent until it wins approval from the FCC, Maffei said later in an interview.

Sirius rose 3.2 percent to $2.57 at 12:18 p.m. New York time. Liberty climbed 2.2 percent to $104.66.

Liberty Media Still Neutral

Liberty Media Corp. (LMCA) reported strong financial results for the second quarter of 2012 outpacing the Zacks Consensus Estimates. We believe the companys recent decision to spin-off Starz LLC segment will enable to it to raise its stake in SIRIUS XM Radio Inc. (SIRI), Barnes & Noble Inc. (BKS), and Live Nation Entertainment Inc. (LYV). We believe SIRIUS XM will be the key player in the companys growth story based on rising auto industry sales.Liberty Media is currently trying hard to take full control of SIRIUS XM.

Liberty Media has filed a new application to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, in which the company stated its intention to acquire more than 50% of SIRIUS XM, so that it can take full control of the Board of SIRIUS XM. Liberty Media withdrew its previous application with FCC to de facto control SIRIUS XM. Instead, the company is now willing to get a full control. Liberty Media at present has 49.5% stake in SIRIUS XMs total outstanding shares. With nearly 23 million subscribers in its kitty, SIRIUS XM, the largest satellite radio service provider, is expected to generate huge financial synergies to Liberty Media over the long haul.

In November 2011, the company invested in Barnes & Noble. Management is pursuing a systematic share buy-back program to boost its shareholders wealth. Meanwhile, the stock price has soared more than 77% in the last year and is currently trading at significant high multiples compared with S&P 500 and its peers with respect to several valuation metrics. We believe Liberty Media is currently fairly valued and maintain our Neutral recommendation.

Liberty Tire Recycling Removes Hundreds of Used Tires from Infield of Kansas Speedway After Construction of Track's …

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Liberty Tire Recycling, the premier provider of tire recycling services in North America, recently removed hundreds of used tires from the infield of Kansas Speedway that were left over after the construction of a new road course at the NASCAR facility owned and operated by International Speedway Corporation. The tires had been stockpiled for use as soft walls on the road course. All of the tires Liberty Tire Recycling collected will be used as material for eco-friendly products, including crumb rubber and industrial feedstock for molded products, tire-derived fuel for industrial kilns, mills and power plants, and rubber mulch for landscaping and playgrounds.

"We collect and recycle used tires from various sources throughout the country from racetracks to tire retailers to illegal dumps in order to create a new life for materials that would otherwise damage the environment," said Jeffrey Kendall, CEO of Liberty Tire Recycling. "We were happy to provide support to Kansas Speedway to ensure that leftover tires were disposed of properly and provide a beneficial use as sustainable raw material."

One use for recycled tire rubber that creates a natural connection between Liberty Tire Recycling and Kansas Speedway is rubberized asphalt. As a low-cost, high-performance alternative to conventional paving mixes, rubberized asphalt reduces dependency on oil and limits carbon dioxide emissions. In use for more than 40 years, rubberized asphalt has proven to lessen maintenance costs and provide a smoother, safer ride. Plus, recycled rubber provides a reliable and consistent supply of material.

"We like the idea of using rubberized asphalt in our parking lots and concourses, and we'll continue to look for ways to use it on our skid pads to develop a test area to see how it would perform on the track itself," said Bill Braniff, senior director of construction for ISC Design & Development, International Speedway Corporation's in-house design and construction group.

The group used state-of-the-art computer modeling to develop track geometry that features 18- to 20-degrees of variable banking in the turns. The previous banking at Kansas Speedway was 15-degree uniform banking in the turns. Construction crews removed the existing oval track asphalt pavement and re-graded the underlying soil to create the variable banking. The new road course features a layout that winds through the infield, portions of which were graded and paved as part of the road course development.

The renovation project will be completed in time for Kansas Speedway to host its annual "Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup" event, the Hollywood Casino 400, tentatively set for October 21, 2012.

Liberty’s win streak snapped

SAN ANTONIO For a while, it looked like the Liberty were going to pick up their fourth consecutive victory until they were undone by a disastrous fourth quarter.

Danielle Robinson had 21 points and the San Antonio Silver Stars outscored the Liberty 22-9 in the final quarter to earn a 77-66 victory over the Liberty on Tuesday. The loss snapped the Libertys three-game winning streak.

Cappie Pondexter scored 23 points to lead the Liberty (14-18), which maintained their one-game lead over Chicago for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Essence Carson had 11 points and Kara Braxton 10.

Shameka Christon added 17 points and Becky Hammon 12 for the playoff-bound San Antonio (20-12).

The Liberty shot 24 percent (4-for-17) from the field in the fourth and were outrebounded 12-5 in the quarter.

The Silver Stars closed the game on a 20-7 run, which included a last-second 3-pointer by Pondexter.

They were hitting shots and clicking on all cylinders, Braxton said. We really could not contain the ball or stop them.

Silver Stars coach Dan Hughes said he was happy with his teams defensive intensity during crunch time.

What was exciting to me was the way we played defensively in the second half, and specifically, in the fourth quarter, he said. [It was] some of the best defense we have played all year against a team that is a good basketball team.

Hammons 3-pointer gave San Antonio a 60-59 edge, its first since leading 18-16 with nine minutes left in the first half.

Liberty Energy Considers the Effects of the Mexican Natural Gas Shortage

HOUSTON, Sept. 19, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Liberty Energy Corp. (LBYE) ("Liberty" or "the Company") understands that Mexico is facing a growing shortage of natural gas as production expands at a tepid pace and demand continues to rise dramatically.

The Company understands that Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex), Mexico's state-sponsored oil and gas monopoly, has begun cutting natural gas supplies to some of its largest customers by as much as 45 percent of their orders to cope with ballooning demand from households to steelmakers such as Ternium SA and ArcelorMittal.

Pemex has largely failed to tap into the country's abundant natural gas reserves, forcing it to quickly increase imports from the well-stocked U.S. in order to meet demand.

Sources confirm that the country's existing gas pipelines are operating around 95 percent, trying to cover the shortfall, but many businesses have been forced to work through outages that can last for hours at a time.

In response, two new gas pipelines are being rushed through planning that would connect central Mexico with Texas and Arizona, where plentiful gas supplies would welcome an outlet.

"The shortage of natural gas is affecting both companies and homeowners. We've heard that in some plants, gas supply has been reduced 40 percent to 45 percent of what was originally agreed. Liberty's decision to build an asset base in Texas, a stable economic and political arena, is set to bear fruit. We have noticed a rising demand for safe onshore projects around our operations sites. We are looking to fully develop our new leases as soon as possible and have plans to expand our acreage further in the not too distant future," commented Ian Spowart, CEO and President of Liberty Energy Corp. For more information on the activities of the Company, please see the Liberty Energy website http://www.energy-liberty.com/

Teens Mirror Parents' Distracted Driving Habits In New Liberty Mutual Insurance/SADD Survey

BOSTON, Sept. 18, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- A new survey from Liberty Mutual Insurance and SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) finds an alarming percentage of teens report their parents make poor and risky decisions while driving. According to more than 1,700 teens surveyed countrywide, dangerous driving behaviors among parents, while their teen is in the car, range from texting or speeding to driving without a seatbelt and even under the influence of alcohol. Even more concerning, surveyed teens repeat their parents' poor driving habits in nearly equal amounts.

To view the multimedia assets associated with this release, please click http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/teens-mirror-parents-distracted-driving-habits-in-new-liberty-mutual-insurancesadd-survey-169851596.html

The survey found teens observe their parents exhibiting the following behavior at least occasionally: 91 percent talk on a cell phone while driving, 88 percent speed and 59 percent text message while driving. With teens reporting nearly half (47 percent) of parents have driven at least occasionally without a seatbelt, 20 percent under the influence of alcohol, and 7 percent under the influence of marijuana, the survey reveals parents may not be the best role models for their teens behind the wheel. This, despite teens reporting in past Liberty Mutual/SADD research that parents are their primary driving influence.

Given the high percentage of teens who report their parents engage in unsafe driving behavior while their teen is in the car, it follows that two-thirds (66 percent) of teen drivers report their parents live by different rules than the ones they expect of their teens. With so many parents not abiding by their own safe-driving rules of the road, a "do as I say, not as I do" policy may be undermining the parent/teen driving relationship.

"The best teacher for a teen driver is a good parental role model," said Stephen Wallace, senior advisor for policy, research and education at SADD. "Parents and teens should have an active and ongoing dialogue about safe driving behavior and take the conversation one step further by signing a Parent/Teen Contract. But parents have to demonstrate good driving behavior from the onset so new drivers understand that safe driving rules apply to everyone equally."

Teen Driving Behavior

The distracted driving behavior reported by teens mirrors the poor driving habits of their parents in nearly equal amounts. Among the more than 1,700 teens surveyed, a high percentage report making poor decisions while driving. In fact, 90 percent of teens report talking on a cell phone while driving and 94 percent of teens speed (at least occasionally), with nearly half (47 percent) of teens speeding often or very often. Nearly 80 percent of teens report sending text messages while driving, 16 percent have driven after using marijuana, 15 percent have driven under the influence of alcohol and 33 percent report driving without a seatbelt.

The link between the observed and self-reported driving behaviors reveals parents are modeling destructive driving behavior, and their teens follow suit. The following is a side-by-side comparison of the survey data reported when teens were asked how frequently they engage, and witness their parents engaging, in the following behavior:

Debate surrounds Lady Liberty in West Chester

WEST CHESTER, OH (FOX19) -

The Twelfth District Court of Appeals heard arguments from Liberty Tax Services on Monday. The company claims West Chester Township is limiting its freedom of commercial speech.

The West Chester Board of Zoning Appeals won't allow Liberty Tax Services to use its Lady Liberty waver to advertise. The Butler County Court of Common Pleas has also rules against the use of the waver.

In our commitment to balanced news, here are both sides of the issue. Liberty Tax Services say not being able to use the Lady Liberty Advertising hurts business and is a violation of its commercial speech rights. On the flip side, officials with West Chester Township say this type of character signage is prohibited by the township's zoning guidelines.

In many cities that surround West Chester, you can find Lady Liberty dancing and twirling signs, but in West Chester it's not allowed and Liberty Tax is putting up a fight.

"The wavers job is to get out there, have fun and make eye contact, make that personal connection so people know where we are at," said Liberty Tax Service franchise owner Jack Vyhnalek. He says the Lady Liberty advertising accounts for a third of the company's business.

The West Chester location opened in 2010 and from the start wasn't allowed to have a waver. The township's zoning resolution states, "signs which employ any parts or elements which revolve, rotate, whirl, spin or otherwise make use of motion to attract attention, other than electronic message boards are prohibited."

"We're not going to have trash out here, we are not going to do things that are inappropriate. We simply want a person. We want to employ people in the community, we'll employ five or ten wavers, because of the increased business we'll have more tax people from the community," said Vyhnalek.

Liberty Tax officials say they have dealt with this type of situation before and are normally successful in the court of appeals. It could be several weeks before we know what the court decides.

Debate surrounds Lady Liberty in West Chester

Liberty-Silver Stars Preview

After gaining a key advantage, the New York Liberty have a chance to wrap up a playoff berth as early as Tuesday night. The first step for the Liberty is earning a third consecutive road win over the San Antonio Silver Stars.

New York (14-17) is one game ahead of Chicago for fourth place in the Eastern Conference and clinched a crucial tiebreaker with a 75-68 comeback win at Washington on Sunday. The Liberty finished with a 10-12 record in conference play and the Sky can't earn more than nine such victories, so Chicago needs to finish with a better overall record than New York - which won't be possible if it loses at Seattle and the Liberty win Tuesday.

The Liberty's season high-tying third straight win almost didn't happen as they trailed by nine with 8:57 remaining against the last-place Mystics. Cappie Pondexter, though, scored 10 of her 30 points after that point and Nicole Powell added 10 of her season-high 18.

Pondexter has averaged 24.3 points in her past four games and 10.0 rebounds over her last three, boosting her season marks to 20.7 points and 4.6 boards.

"Cappie. She's been awesome. She's our MVP and the most important player to her team of anybody in the league," said coach John Whisenant, whose team is 5-1 this month.

Pondexter had 23 points and eight rebounds against San Antonio (19-12) on July 8, and Essence Carson scored a season-high 25. However, that wasn't enough to help New York add to a five-game win streak in the series.

Jia Perkins scored a season-high 24 points in the 94-81 road victory, while Becky Hammon and Sophia Young had 23 and 21, respectively.

That win was among a franchise-record 12 in a row for the Silver Stars, but they've gone 3-7 since then. They failed to win their third straight Sunday, falling 80-70 to Tulsa.

The defeat dealt a serious blow to San Antonio's hopes of securing home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. The Silver Stars trail Los Angeles by 2 1/2 games for the No. 2 seed, though they hold the tiebreaker by virtue of winning the head-to-head series.

A San Antonio loss or Sparks win over Phoenix on Tuesday would make the Silver Stars the No. 3 seed and give Los Angeles home court for the opening best-of-three series.
