CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Libertarian candidates will again appear on the West Virginia ballot after an absence of more than a decade.

The party's nominee for governor attracted enough votes for Libertarians to regain ballot status.

Unofficial results show candidate David Moran received more than 8,700 votes or 1.3% of the total.

State law recognizes parties for ballot access when at least 1% of the gubernatorial vote goes to its candidate.

The Libertarian Party had cleared that threshold in 1996. But it then lost ballot status in the following election for governor, in 2000, when its candidate missed the mark.

The 2000 election saw another alternative party, West Virginia's Mountain Party, win ballot access. That status will continue after its candidate for governor this year, Jesse Johnson, got 2.5%.

Incumbent Democatic state Sen. Evie Hudak fought hard for the narrow win against Republican challenger Lang Sias on Tuesday, but she had some help from Libertarians.

The race for Senate District 19 in Jefferson County ended with Hudak having received 46.9 percent, or 34,359 votes, to Sias' 46.4 percent, or 34,027 votes, a 332-vote margin too high to trigger a recount.

But less noted was the 6.5 percent, or 4,823 votes, that went to Libertarian Lloyd Sweeny.

Political observers say Libertarians, who generally favor limited government and lower spending, tend to take more votes from Republicans than Democrats.

"I think you have to go on the assumption that the majority of Libertarian votes would go to a Republican candidate if the Libertarian candidate was not on the ballot," said Dick Wadhams, a political strategist and former state GOP chairman. "I think history would dictate that.

"I think in a race as close as this one, clearly that Libertarian candidate affected the outcome and handed it to a Democrat."

There were Libertarian candidates in 40 state House races and 12 in state Senate races, but the Hudak-Sias matchup was the only contest in which Libertarian votes arguably changed the outcome.

There were also American Constitution Party candidates in two Senate races and eight House contests, and two House races with unaffiliated candidates. But the margins of victory for the winners in those races were large enough that the involvement of third-party candidates had no effect on the outcome.

Libertarian influences outcome of Senate race

OXFORD, N.C. -- Three-time Libertarian governor candidate Barbara Howe says she will not make another run at the office.

The Daily Dispatch of Henderson reports that Howe said she shouldn't run again.

Howe collected more than 95,000 votes in Tuesday's general election, which was won by Republican Pat McCrory. That represents 2.1 percent of the popular vote, guaranteeing that a Libertarian will be on ballots for the next four years in any state or local race.

If Howe had failed to reach that plateau, the party likely would have been decertified by the State Board of Elections and would have had to collect signatures of registered voters to get back on the ballot.

Howe mentioned Lenoir city councilman T.J. Rohr as one of several possibilities to run for governor in 2016.

November8,2012 The state now has four official political parties after Tuesdays election.

West Virginia Secretary of State Natalie Tennant said today that the Libertarian Party has gained ballot access for 2014 and 2016, based on David Morans performance in the gubernatorial race.

Before the canvassing of the results, Moran had garnered about 1.3 percent of the vote. To gain ballot access in West Virginia, a partys candidate must receive one percent of the total ballots cast in the race for governor.

Ballot access means a Libertarian candidate will not have to collect signatures in order to be placed on the states general election ballot. The Libertarian Party will be able to choose their candidates either in a primary election or by party convention.

More than 8,000 people voted for Moran even though there were just 1,448 voters in West Virginia registered with the Libertarian Party.

Libertarian Party gains ballot access

Just as he did two years ago, Libertarian Dan Reale declared his candidacy for Congress on the day after the election, giving himself a two-year head start on all other candidates.

Reale, who lives in Plainfield and is chairman of the Libertarian Party of Connecticut, got 1,432 votes in Tuesdays election, according to totals posted on the website of Secretary of the State Denise Merrill. Democrat Joe Courtney of Vernon won re-election to a fourth term to represent Connecticuts 2nd District. Republican Paul Formica of East Lyme and Green Party candidate Colin Bennett also ran.

Reale ran as a write-in candidate in 2008 and 2010 but was listed on the ballot this year. He plans to step down from the party chairmanship, which is an unpaid position, at the end of this year, he said.

This time well be able to campaign for the entire time instead of waiting on SOTS (the secretary of the state) to see whether were an option or not, Reale wrote in an email.

Reale has been embroiled in signature-validating legal arguments with state officials in the past.
