D.C. Libertarian happy despite election loss

WASHINGTON (AP) - Libertarian Bruce Majors says he is happy despite losing the election last week for the District of Columbia's seat in Congress.

That's because the more than 13,000 votes he earned were enough to get his party on general election ballots for the next four years without having to gather signature for a petition. Bob Johnston, a national Libertarian Party employee who monitors ballot access issues, told the Washington Post that the district now joins 30 states in granting the party regular ballot access.

Major says the challenge of 11-term incumbent Democrat Eleanor Holmes Norton was chosen carefully. He ran during a presidential election year when more voters turn out and in a year where Republicans didn't run a candidate of their own.

Libertarian Party back on ballot in West Virginia

CHARLESTON Libertarian candidates will again appear automatically on the West Virginia ballot following an absence of more than a decade, after the partys gubernatorial hopeful attracted enough votes in Tuesdays general election.

David Moran received more than 8,700 votes, or 1.3 percent of the total. State law recognizes a party for ballot access when its gubernatorial candidate gets at least 1 percent of the vote.

Clearing that threshold means a partys candidate doesnt have to collect petition signatures to get his or her name on the ballot. The Libertarian Party now can also choose nominees through a primary or a party convention, said Secretary of State Natalie Tennant, who is West Virginias elections chief.

Tuesdays ballot also featured Gary Johnson, a former governor of New Mexico and the Libertarian candidate for president. Johnson received 6,204 votes from West Virginians, or just less than 1 percent of the total cast for president.

I vote for who I think is going to do the right job. I can see him doing a good cleanup plan, said Barbara Bolyard, 50, of Newburg, who chose Johnson. She added, I would like to see us get on the right foot, but I dont think either a Republican or a Democrat would do that.

Tennants office said 1,448 of the states voters are registered Libertarian. The party promotes individual rights and limited government.

The Libertarian Party had cleared the 1 percent threshold in 1996. But it then lost ballot status in the following election for governor, in 2000, when its candidate missed the mark.

That 2000 election saw another alternative party, West Virginias Mountain Party, win ballot access. That status will continue after its candidate for governor this year, Jesse Johnson, got 16,476 votes, or 2.5 percent. It also fielded candidates for president and U.S. senator as well as for five House of Delegates seats. None prevailed. Around 1,380 people are registered with that party, according to figures from Tennants office.

Libertarian Party secures ballot access in upcoming elections

David Moran

November9,2012 One point three percent of total votes from Tuesdays election may not seem like much, but it was just enough for the Libertarian party to regain uninhibited ballot access through and including the 2016 general election in West Virginia.

Libertarian party gubernatorial candidate David Moran secured his partys access in upcoming elections by pulling at least 1 percent of the vote in this weeks general election. Moran says he and the party hope to continue the Libertarian's momentum by having a primary before the next election.

What I will do personally is to work to find a person or people that would like to compete in a primary. We would like to do that very much, because it will help sharpen the focus on the principles that we stand for. I may or may not be a candidate myself. If there are no other candidates, then I certainly will be a candidate.

"However, its most important to me to find the right people for the futuremuch more important than for me to continue to seek the office myself.

Moran says the partys immediate objectives include identifying representatives from each of the 55 counties to communicate with residents, as well as reaching out to students at colleges and universities around the state to educate them about the party's platform.

Libertarian Gov. candidate says she's done

By: Associated Press | NBC-17 Published: November 09, 2012 Updated: November 09, 2012 - 4:24 PM

Three-time Libertarian governor candidate Barbara Howe says she will not make another run at the office.

The Daily Dispatch of Henderson reports that Howe said she shouldn't run again.

Howe collected more than 95,000 votes in Tuesday's general election, which was won by Republican Pat McCrory. That represents 2.1 percent of the popular vote, guaranteeing that a Libertarian will be on ballots for the next four years in any state or local race.

If Howe had failed to reach that plateau, the party likely would have been decertified by the State Board of Elections and would have had to collect signatures of registered voters to get back on the ballot.

Howe mentioned Lenoir city councilman T.J. Rohr as one of several possibilities to run for governor in 2016.
