John Hospers: From 1776 to 1984
John Hospers was professor emeritus of philosophy at the University of Southern California. He was also the first Libertarian Party Presidential candidate in 1972. He passed away in 2011. In this video from a Libertarian International conference in London, England in 1984, Hospers compares 1984 (and Nineteen Eighty-Four, George Orwell #39;s popular novel) to 1776, the year of the American Revolution. Hospers speaks about everything from dystopia to new technology to the inevitable failure of global communism. Andy #39;s idea was to communicate libertarian and Austrian thought through the means of a novel as well as illustrating the historical scenery and early problems with Greek democracy. The book also talks about the banking system at the time of the Persian invention of what would now be considered a cheque. It also touches on gold and silver #39;s role as money, and the real story behind the marathon walk. They also discuss Andy #39;s usage of the alias Jack England, and his decision to self-publish the book. The Kindle edition is already available for less than one pound/dollar/euro and Andy promises that this money will be wisely spent. Today on Fox Business Network, Judge Andrew Napolitano addressed the libertarian view on religion. He disagreed with the statement that libertarians don #39;t believe in God. Judge Napolitano responded to the claim, saying, "Most libertarians would go along with Jefferson #39;s argument in the Declaration of Independence mdash; we are endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights." Generally speaking, the judge explained that libertarians believe that our rights come from our humanity and our humanity is a gift from God. "Your humble correspondent is an old-fashioned, pre-Vatican II Roman Catholic," Judge Napolitano said, describing how he preferred Mass to be held in Latin. "Many, many libertarians feel that way about tradition and about a traditional recognition of the existence of God." I #39;m Slim Jim Shreeve - slimjimshreeve.com ... This tune was about Mitt Romney who lost to President Obama in the 2012 US elections. Don #39;t get me wrong, I ain #39;t no liberal. I just didn #39;t take to Romney. To me he was a bust out boy, a corporate raider, who destroyed heartland US companies to make a profit. I wrote this tune, not because I supported President Obama, but because I wanted to see the Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson become president of the USA. I think he #39;d have turned the nation around and paved the way to freedom for the world. But it wasn #39;t to be... Bottom line is, I need to change the lyrics to be evergreen -- bad doing a topical song as it doesn #39;t last. Can #39;t play the fucker live as most people have forgotten who the hell Romney was... Still, the whole thing was recorded on my ole four-track and I was playin #39; my ole Sunburst Tele, and if I remember rightly, I was banging a broken up whicker basket for drums.
