City of Houston Recognizes TRUEGRID as Beneficial in Eliminating or Reducing Urban Drainage Fees

Houston, Texas (PRWEB) November 12, 2014

The City of Houston's Planning and Development Services Division has recognized TRUEGRID, an eco-friendly alternative pavement system, as effective for residential areas in reducing or eliminating drainage costs where in-situ soil drains at .5" or more per hour, according to the City of Houston's Department of Public Works and Engineering's Infrastructure Design Manual. The TRUEGRID permeable pavement system allows for natural drainage as an alternative to use of a drainage system with a variety of public and private applications.

TRUEGRID's permeable pavement system is designed to replace asphalt pavements with a porous honeycomb-style grid system which allows water to flow through it directly into the ground, where contaminants become trapped in the soil as water enters into the groundwater system. The system is made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic and is then filled with either soil and grass, gravel or porous asphalt, allowing water to escape through to the ground beneath.

Because of the variety of ways that TRUEGRID's permeable pavement system can be filled, it can be used to create more natural-looking driveable areas or can appear to emulate a traditional street. The TRUEGRID system has been shown capable of handling 6880 psi when left unfilled, but capable of far more resistance and even heavy highway usage when filled, making it a suitable alternative to asphalt paving on streets and highways as well as residential driveways.

The City of Houston's Planning Division recognized that because TRUEGRID interacts directly with groundwater, there is no need to construct separate drainage system if the soil in place drains at .5" or more per hour. If the soil naturally drains at that rate, per the City's recommendation, a separate drainage system for a residential property is no longer required. It should be noted that the actual drainage of the in-situ soil should be determined prior to installation.

About TRUEGRID: TRUEGRID is a leader in the permeable paving industry providing factory wholesale direct pricing for both residential and municipal applications. TRUEGRID has a nationwide footprint and specializes in the delivery and construction of permeable paving systems which both improve groundwater quality while reducing long-term drainage costs. TRUEGRID is based in Houston, Texas. TRUEGRID products are made in the United States. For more information, contact TRUEGRUD at 1-855-355-GRID. Their website is http://www.truegridpaver.com

Environment ministry launches GIS based online support mechanism

NEW DELHI: Aimed at bringing transparency and reduce delays in regulatory clearances, the Environment ministry today launched the Geographical Information System (GIS) based online support mechanism to help in taking "informed" decisions.

Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar said the GIS-based "Decision Support System" will fast track the process of regulatory forest clearances for speedier economic growth while ensuring that development and protection of environment go hand-in-hand.

The system will also help officials in getting relevant information with just a click of the mouse as it will have the satellite imagery and details about the forest cover. Projects and other activities being carried out in the forests could be monitored.

"It would save time. It would facilitate in taking merit based decisions without delay and in a transparent manner," Javadekar said while launching the portal here.

The first phase launched today contains geo-referenced layers of forest cover as per the latest State of Forest Report by Forest Survey of India, forest types, Biological richness, landscape integrity, protected areas, tiger reserves and corridors.

"We talk a lot against corruption. It will only be corruption free system when through the utilisation of technology, we build up an informed decision mechanism," the minister said.

Citing an example of efficacy of the system, Javadekar referred to his recent Bhopal visit and said he was shown a system there by forest officials where whatever happening inside the forest could be seen live through google maps.

While referring to the earlier launch for portals for online submission of applications for grant of environment and forest clearance and Zoo Authority, the minister said this was the fourth big step taken by his ministry.

"The GIS-based decision support system...those who want to put up a project and those who have to do its assessment, this will benefit both. This will give correct information and it cannot be tampered with," Javadekar said.

GIS layers of Net Present Value (NPV), hydrological layers and forest cover as per the previous state of forest reports will also be incorporated in the system in the second phase.

Noe Gutierrez, of 49th Security Forces Squadron, and his children talked to Sierra Elementary 4th graders Sydney Thomas and Caitlyn Bowman about their display on the importance of recycling while their teacher Rebecca Harris and Nakul Bhakta listen to the conversation. (Jacqueline DevineDaily News )

Alamogordo Public Schools presented an eco-friendly lifestyles and healthy living Education Fair at the Alamogordo High School Saturday.

It's part of their "Go Green" theme to teach students about recycling and Earth Day.

Oregon Elementary School Principal Brenda Dorsey said every year different schools from the district do a booth for the fair. Alamogordo's education system wants to stress the importance of recycling because it conserves raw materials and making products out of recycled materials reduces the need to consume more precious resources. It also protects natural habitats for the future.

"The schools in our community are very involved with Earth Day which is in April," said Dorsey. "One of the things I've noticed is that we have so many things we can recycle from the classrooms. We decided to recycle cardboard one year and it was unbelievable how much we recycled when all the schools joined together."

Dorsey said this year students are recycling plastic bottles as part of their project.

She said They are also building furniture out of wood palettes.

Time Warner Execs Talk Dish Dispute, HBO Online-Only Service

Time Warner is committed to the traditional TV system, while also exploring new opportunities, chairman and CEO Jeff Bewkes said on the entertainment conglomerate's third-quarter earnings conference call on Wednesday.

The call featured much talk about HBO's planned online-only video service, as well as a carriage dispute between the firm's Turner unit and Dish.

The comments came after the company reported better-than-expected quarterly results and raised its full-year earnings growth forecast.

Bewkes said that the company was focused on going after "the large and growing opportunity" in the global video content space by streamling the company and let its collaborative unit heads go after traditional and new business opportunities. He said TW was the "best-positioned" media company to take advantage of this.

He also emphasized "our commitment to a strong multi-channel eco-system" after recent news that HBO would launch an online-only video service.

In a rare occurrence, the call's Q&A portion also included the chiefs of TW's three units - Warner Bros. boss Kevin Tsujihara, HBO head Richard Plepler and Turner chief John Martin. Bewkes said they were on the call to help answer any follow-up questions after the company's investor day last month.

Plepler discussed HBO's online-only plan, reemphasizing that the focus will be on collaborating with pay TV partners. "We want to lean in with them," he said. "Ive talked to all of our distributors." Plepler said he sees "nothing but upside" for all parties.

Plepler reiterated that he wasn't abandoning existing pay TV relationships. This is not binary," he said. He wants to initially go after 70 million pay TV homes that do not get HBO right now, he reiterated. Plus, "theres 4-5 million [broadband-only homes] that we can also get with our partners," he added.

Plepler said he has talked to the top executives at NBCUniversal and Comcast, and they feel they will remain good business partners. NBCU boss Steve Burke had said he had been surprised by HBO's decision to launch an online-only service and said it would have a tough time with it.

CFO Howard Averill said fourth-quarter Turner advertising revenue will be flat due to fewer sports playoff games, a strong dollar and a carriage dispute with Dish. Without these factors, the firm would have seen return to growth in the current quarter, he said. Averill said if Turner and Dish don't settle, the 2014 financial forecast will come in at the lower end of the range. He added that the firm is "working hard" to resolve the dispute.

Fireside: The digital photo frame curated via the cloud

Generally speaking digital photo frames are as dumb as bricks. The sole purpose of these low-end electronics is showcasing the hordes of digital pictures you take on your smartphone or digital camera, without much thought to intelligent curation of your memories. A crowdfunding push is underway to change this, though, in the form of the Fireside smart frame and cloud service.

The Fireside digital picture eco-system bills itself as a smart system in the home, consisting of its specialized "in the cloud" delivery system tied to a so-called "revolutionary re-imagining" of the digital photo frame. It also integrates apps for iPhones, iPads and Android devices.

Heres how this whole thing works. You take a digital picture or video through one of your mobile phones or tablets. All of this data is herded from these devices and through the Fireside app onto the companys cloud service. Using what those behind this technology describe as "contextual computing and machine learning," the system gathers the digital memories into libraries that are organized by, among other things, life events such as birthdays and anniversaries.

Once the Amazon S3-based cloud service is done with its number-crunching, the photos are beamed over Wi-Fi to the rather elegant-looking Fireside SmartFrame (which also apparently can grab images via Bluetooth directly from users devices). This product, with its 64 GB of local eMMC storage, hosts your files locally so as to prevent possible buffering and playback issues one might encounter over a network. The memories are displayed in such a way as to take into account factors like special dates (i.e. birthdays, weddings) and weather conditions (i.e. if cold outside, it might display skiing and holiday images).

The 15-inch display frame, operating off of Android, is said to take design cues from furniture and lighting in its looks. It is crafted from materials like glass, melamine, chrome and copper. It also sports a rotating stand mechanism for either standalone placement on a mantle or hanging on the wall.

At the time of this post the Fireside was still in the early days of its Kickstarter campaign but steadily raking in the pledges. Early adopter pricing is currently set at US$339, and if all goes as planned first shipments of these devices should drop in June of 2015.

More information on the Fireside can be seen in the pitch video below.

NZ Eco Fashion to showcase at Undress Brisbane

PRESS RELEASE

6/10/14

NZ Eco Fashion to showcase at Undress Brisbane

Three NZ eco fashion designers will showcase their collections at the upcoming Undress Runways event in Brisbane on October 11.

Senorita AweSUMO and Melanie Child of Dunedin, and HIX of Wellington have been selected to runway alongside other Australian emerging and established designers at Australias largest sustainable fashion event Undress Brisbane.

Senorita AweSUMO, a zero waste lifestyle brand will present Basix - a range of garments that can be made from reclaimed or repurposed fabric, and brings together Senorita AweSUMO's key beliefs of waste reduction with easy to wear original designs. The collection can be manufactured through the current fashion system, and utilises draping techniques, zero waste pattern making, pre consumer waste and found fabrics.

Melanie Child is a high end upcycled clothing label dedicated to the creative redesign of pre-loved clothing, with the underlying inspiration for the label coming from a simultaneous aversion and fascination with mass production and its by-products. Melanies collection entitled Inertia is constructed entirely from existing garments such as shirts, jeans, mens tailored jackets and tshirts and is a reference to the current state of the fashion industry and the unsustainable practises of the fast fashion cycle.

Anna Hicks of HIX is a fashion textile artist and will be showcasing her graduate collection Metamorphostitch. The concept for her collection was to use traditional and contemporary hand craft tehcniques as a way of opposing the fast fashion system whilst also challenging stereotypical views of craft as a domestic hobby. Using all second hand materials with a focus on wool, her collection uses exausht dye techniques to achieve bright colours and bold shapes resulting in a decorative, sustainable and thought provoking collection.

The three designers also runwayed at the recent NZ Eco Fashion Exposed in Lower Hutt in July of this year.

Undress Runways will take place on Saturday, 11 October 2014 from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM (AEST) in West End, QLD
