Aquarius MAS with Marine Solar Power Installed on Blue Star Delos

This important milestone for EMP means that the company has taken the Aquarius MAS from development to commercial use in just a few years and is also a critical step towards the commercial release of the combined wind & solar power system for shipping - the Aquarius MRE (Marine Renewable Energy) System.

The Aquarius MAS installed on Delos includes a KEI 3240 CPU/AGU, LCD touch-screen monitor, input/output link system (ILS), associated hubs, power supplies & charge controllers plus an FC-38 battery pack from Furukawa Battery Co. Ltd., and flexible marine-grade solar panels from Solbian Energie Alernative Srl.

In additional to monitoring the performance of the solar panel array, the Aquarius MAS will also report on the status of the battery pack plus when the ship is at sea, display in real-time the fuel consumption of the main engines and calculate emissions. (CO2, Nox & Sox)

The installation of equipment on the ship was carried out by Blue Star Ferries own technical team and EMP's technical partner in Greece, Triad Ltd.

The Aquarius Management and Automation System or Aquarius MAS is a cost effective alarm handling, performance monitoring and data logging platform suitable for a wide range of ships. The system is based upon the reliable and robust KEI 3240 Data Logger which is already in use on hundreds of vessels including tug boats, training ships, tankers and bulk ore carriers.

When combined with a marine solar power system the Aquarius MAS becomes a powerful cost reduction tool which will allow ship owners not only to reduce fuel consumption via performance management, but also via the use of renewable energy.

The Aquarius MAS, battery pack and solar panel array were installed as part of the Blue Star Delos Renewable Energy Innovation Project. This project is evaluating in stages, a number of innovative solutions developed by Eco Marine Power (EMP) and its strategic partners on-board the "Blue Star Delos" - a modern high speed passenger and car ferry owned and operated by the multi-award winning Greek shipping company - Blue Star Ferries of Athens, Greece - a member of Attica Group.

On the completion of the installation Mr. Myron Vergis, Manager of the Electrical and Electronic Department for Attica Group said "Blue Star Ferries and the Attica Group are committed to implementing solutions that reduce vessel emissions, improve fuel efficiency and continue our tradition of embracing innovative technologies. I look forward to working further with Eco Marine Power on the Blue Start Renewable Energy Innovation Project and introducing more renewable energy solutions to the shipping market."

Greg Atkinson, Chief Technology Officer at Eco Marine Power said "The Aquarius MAS and solar power installation on Delos demonstrates that solar power on ships combined with a flexible data logging and alarm handling platform makes sense. Not only will the system allow Blue Star Ferries monitor their fuel use and emissions but it will also help the company reduce fuel consumption by tapping into the limitless and clean power provided by the sun."

He added "Blue Star Ferries is also showing once again their commitment to innovation and to protecting the marine environment and we are honoured to be working with such a progressive shipping company."

Star India announces new tariff structure

Broadcast network Star India announceda new incentive based tariff structure for its multi system operator (MSO) partners in order to further transparency in dealings.

In an industry first, Star has introduced a new tariff structure with cable platforms based on uniform pricing instead of bilaterally negotiated deals.

Uday Shankar, CEO of Star India, said,"This new initiative is aimed at empowering consumers with greater choice, and platforms with the ability to customize their offerings as per the needs of their viewers."

"Crucially, this initiative will usher in a new era of transparency in the domain. It will provide aclear and transparent way for the broadcaster to work with the operator community, thereby improving the health of the entire digital eco system," he added.

The revised reference-interconnect-offer (RIO) or tariff will be in force for one year with digital platforms in Phase 1 and Phase 2 markets (of digitisation).

The channels are all offered on a basis that allows the platform payouts to vary as per their choice of content and incentives. The incentive would be based on the number of STAR channels carried, the number of viewers and the ease of access to these channels.

Platforms that still opt out of the revised RIO will have the option to choose and take channels as per the original listprice.

This initiative from Star stems fromthe desire to have a transparent system that offers better choices for consumers and to rid the industry of the broadcaster-platform disagreements that have riddled it in the past.

Most recent of these disagreements was the Star India and Hathway case where the matter was ultimately taken to the Telecom Disputes Settlement and AppellateTribunal (TDSAT).

Sources close to Star reveal that while the network has no problems if the MSO's prefer to pay on anala-carte basis (that is only for the channels subscribed rather than carrying all the channels lumpsum and paying Star accordingly) broadcasters in general are skeptical of the transparency ofdeclaration of subscribers.

3 Puerto Rico Resorts For An Eco-Luxe Escape

As Puerto Ricos luxury-hotel landscape goes ever more upscale, angling to lure travelers from St. Barts and the British Virgin Islands with a new level of cachet and the always-appealing conveniences of American currency and proximity to the U.S. mainland, the islands newest resorts have also become contenders for the best nature-meets-luxury experiences anywhere.

The 28,500-acre El Yunque rain forest, otherworldly bioluminescent bays and a host of tropical fauna (you will know the coqu frogs chorus by day two of your vacation) provide some of the regions most unique natural attractions. A handful of tucked-into-the-palms resorts supply the chic accommodations, excellent cuisine and polished service that are redrawing the map of the Caribbeans top hotels and putting Puerto Rico on high-end travelers radars. Dorado Beach, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve The luxe factor: Opened in 2012 as the first Ritz-Carlton Reserve in the Americas and the second in the world, Dorado Beachs 114 rooms and suitesand one 8,000-square-foot presidential mansionfeature over-the-top amenities such as private plunge pools and not one, but two rainforest showers (indoors and out). Personal embajadores (ambassadors) take care of every request, making your vacation on this secluded stretch of shoreline feel effortless, from securing reservations at signature restaurant Mi Casa by Jos Andrs to indulging in a massage (using oils infused with herbs grown onsite) at Spa Botnico. We recommend reserving one of two tree house treatment platforms for an elevated hammock massage overlooking the spas five wild acres.

The nature factor: Dorado Beach, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve was designed with LEED certification in mind and is keen on connecting guests to the environment. Fittingly for a resort built on land first developed by conservationist Laurance Rockefeller, nature-imbued options abound, including the eponymous 11-mile Rockefeller nature trail. Jean-Michel Cousteaus Ambassadors of the Environment program immerses adults and children in Puerto Ricos natural wonders; the lengthy activity catalog runs from a nighttime snorkeling adventure through coral reefs to an ecochefs class in which kids visit the resorts chefs garden and prepare snacks in a solar oven.

And guest rooms pay exceptional attention to detail, down to coconut turndown treats (including the delicious coconut kiss cookies) that recall the resorts past life as a coconut plantation. Topping it off are those only-at-St.-Regis celebrationsa daily iced-tea ritual, champagne sabering and koi fish feeding.

The nature factor: The sole St. Regis in the Caribbean is also the regions only Certified Gold Audubon Signature Sanctuary. Ghanaians advised to promote biodiversity

Regional News of Saturday, 18 October 2014

Source: GNA

Professor Peter Kwapong, an Entomologist at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), has advised Ghanaians to change their attitude towards the environment, to conserve biodiversity to facilitate national food security.

He said fruits and seeds serve many purposes in the lives of man and in the economies of countries, and proper management of pollinators (animals whose activities perform the eco-system of pollination) would improve on food productivity.

Pollination is the reproduction in flowering plants, through the transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma. Prof Kwapong, who is the National Coordinator of Global Pollination Project-Ghana, gave the advice at a media training workshop on the Project at Dumasua, in the Sunyani West District of Brong-Ahafo Region.

The two-day workshop was attended by 30 journalists, drawn from Northern, Upper East, Upper West, Ashanti and Brong-Ahafo Regions. It was aimed at empowering the participants in creating a change in public awareness on biodiversity conservation through environmental education.

Ghana is selected among seven countries to pilot the Global Pollination project, which is aimed at improving food security, nutrition and livelihoods through enhanced conservation and sustainable use of pollination.

Other implementing countries of the five-year project, which started in 2009, and being funded by the Food and Agriculture Organisation, United Nations Environment Programme and the Global Environment Fund include Brazil, India, Kenya, Nepal, Pakistan and South Africa.

Prof Kwapong observed that the attitude of Ghanaians towards the environment is very poor and negatively affects the reproduction process in plants as the lives of pollinators are extinct day-in and day-out.

Pollination, he explained helps to create clean environments that encourage many organisms to thrive, thus, improving biological diversity of the environments in both aquatic and terrestrial terrains.

Eco Park founder sparking with ideas

BYRON Eco Park owner Dieter Horstmann's newest venture will light up your life - literally.

Mr Horstmann and an informal crew of researchers, inventors and contributors continue to pack the 75ha eco-friendly Tyagarah test bed with innovative projects.

The latest of which are some seriously powerful solar panels, accompanied by an environmentally-friendly Aquion Energy non-toxic battery, which hint at the prospect of a future without power bills.

Mr Horstmann was the first importer of the panels and batteries in Australia.

"It's all about green power, making our own. We want to have our own energy bank," he said of the system, which sits atop of an old hangar at the property.

"At night they (solar panels) get 240 volt back and you only pay for the difference.

"Energy companies don't want this. They try to stop this, but I think it's better and cheaper than having big, high voltage, dirty power lines across Australia over long distances.

"Instead, all you need is cluster batteries. It doesn't take much."

Mr Horstmann said the panels are currently making excess power and would only struggle to meet demand under considerable load.

He believes solar could be our solitary power source if we are smart with our power usage.

SNOA Sleepwear Supports Eco-awareness and Polar Bear Habitat Protection

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) October 17, 2014

Representatives of SNOA Sleepwear announced today that the company has taken steps toward going green in its effort to help aid the planet and the evolving fashion industry.

Anh Oppenheimer, company founder of SNOA Sleepwear, a luxury sleepwear line that allows women to feel both warm and sexy, explained that SNOA has a strong commitment to local production, sourcing all-natural and biodegradable fabrics, and empowering its customers with the ability to vote with their dollars for eco-friendly clothing.

Oppenheimer went on to point out that SNOA contributes a portion of all proceeds to Polar Bear Habitat Conservation through the Center of Biological Diversity. The Center fights for the protection of Polar Bears, among countless other animals, whose survival is threatened by the effects of global warming.

One of the SNOAs reasons for contributing to the cause, according to Oppenheimer, is the fact that unchecked global warming could eradicate two-thirds of polar bears by 2050 and the rest by century's end if greenhouse gas-fueled global warming keeps melting their Arctic sea-ice habitat. SNOA sees their contribution as a way to prevent the planets loss of one of some of the most majestic creatures.

Additionally, according to the Center for Biological Diversity, the Obama administration continues to allow drilling in the Alaskan Arctic, even after the disastrous April 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The Centers main objective is to secure federal protection for polar bears and fight for the preservation of their fragile eco-system.

SNOA Sleepwear is proud to be able to contribute to this cause in any way we can, Oppenheimer said. SNOA has been moved by the Center's work. Over the years, we have chosen to focus on polar bears as we feel that their plight, as a result of the climate crisis, is a symbol of the plight of the planet itself.

Different Types of Ecosystems – Ecosystem – Ecosystem

There are essentially two kinds of ecosystems; Aquatic and Terrestrial. Any other sub-ecosystem falls under one of these two headings. Terrestrial ecosystems Terrestrial ecosystems can be found anywhere apart from heavily saturated places. They are broadly classed into: The Forest Ecosystems They are the ecosystems in which an abundance of flora, or plants, is seen so they have a big number of organisms which live in relatively small space. Therefore, in forest ecosystems the density of living organisms is quite high. A small change in this ecosystem could affect the whole balance, effectively bringing down the whole ecosystem. You could see a fantastic diversity in the fauna of the ecosystems, too. They are further divided into:

The Desert Ecosystem Desert ecosystems are located in regions that receive an annual rainfall less than 25. They occupy about 17 percent of all the land on our planet. Due to the extremely high temperature, low water availability and intense sunlight, fauna and flora are scarce and poorly developed. The vegetation is mainly shrubs, bushes, few grasses and rare trees. The stems and leaves of the plants are modified in order to conserve water as much as possible. The best known desert ones are the succulents such as the spiny leaved cacti. The animal organisms include insects, birds, camels, reptiles all of which are adapted to the desert (xeric) conditions.

The Grassland Ecosystem Grasslands are located in both the tropical and temperate regions of the world though the ecosystems vary slightly. The area mainly comprises grasses with a little number of trees and shrubs. The main vegetation includes grasses, plants and legumes that belong to the composite family. A lot of grazing animals, insectivores and herbivores inhabit the grasslands. The two main kinds of grasslands ecosystems are:

The Mountain Ecosystem Mountain land provides a scattered and diverse array of habitats where a large number of animals and plants can be found. At the higher altitudes, the harsh environmental conditions normally prevail, and only the treeless alpine vegetation can survive. The animals that live there have thick fur coats for prevention from cold and hibernation in the winter months. Lower slopes are commonly covered with coniferous forests.

Aquatic Ecosystems The aquatic ecosystem is the ecosystem found in a body of water. It encompasses aquatic flora, fauna and water properties, as well. There are two main types of aquatic ecosystem - Marine and Freshwater.

The Marine Ecosystem Marine ecosystems are the biggest ecosystems, which cover around 71% of Earth's surface and contain 97% of out planet's water. Water in Marine ecosystems features in high amounts minerals and salts dissolved in them. The different divisions of the marine ecosystem are:

Many kinds of organisms live in marine ecosystems: the brown algae, corals, cephalopods, echinoderms, dinoflagellates and sharks.

The Freshwater Ecosystem Contrary to the Marine ecosystems, the freshwater ecosystem covers only 0.8% of Earth's surface and contains 0.009% of the total water. Three basic kinds of freshwater ecosystems exist:

The ecosystems are habitats to reptiles, amphibians and around 41% of the worlds fish species. The faster moving turbulent waters typically contain a greater concentrations of dissolved oxygen, supporting greater biodiversity than slow moving waters in pools.
