Gameday: Comets vs Abbotsford

March 28, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets ABBOTSFORD HEAT (35-24-5-2) @ UTICA COMETS (29-28-3-4)

Utica Memorial Auditorium, 7 pm

Radio: 94.9 K-Rock

Tonight's Game: The Utica Comets remain in pursuit of the final playoff position in the Western Conference as the Abbotsford Heat come to the Mohawk Valley tonight for the first of two games. Utica has won seven of nine entering this evening's action.

When They Last Met: The Comets earned a 3-1 victory over the Heat in their final game of the season in Abbotsford, back on Mar. 15. Colin Stuart picked up a pair of goals, while Brandon DeFazio also scored and center Alex Friesen collected two assists. Goaltender Joacim Eriksson picked up the victory with 38 saves on 39 shots.

Comets Outlook: The Comets pulled out a 3-0 shutout in Milwaukee on Feb. 7, led by 21 saves from Joacim Eriksson and two goals from Darren Archibald. Defenseman Kent Huskins also scored for the Comets. For Eriksson, the shutout was his fourth of the season, which, at the time, moved him to second in the AHL in that category. Marek Mazanec made 28 saves on 31 shots in defeat.

Heat Outlook: The Heat defeated the Marlies on Sunday afternoon by a 3-2 scoreline Ricoh Coliseum. Trevor Smith (1-1-2) and Peter Holland (0-2-2) led the way with two points apiece, while Carter Ashton and Jerry D'Amigo also scored. Corey Locke and Zachery Davies each scored for Abbotsford in defeat. Garret Sparks was victorious with 31 saves, while Joni Ortio took the loss with 26 saves on 29 shots.

Here Come The Comets: Since Jan. 18, the Comets have been the AHL's second highest producing team with 38 points, courtesy of an 18-7-2 record. Utica, which trails just St. John's in both wins and points during that span, has moved into sole possession of 11th place in the Western Conference, six points shy of the final playoff position with three games in hand.

Calice In Wonderland: Center Cal O'Reilly has been one of the AHL's finest players since he returned from injury on Feb. 21. The Toronto native has the most assists in the league (15) since that date, padded by his helper on Saturday. That tally pushed him one ahead of Oklahoma City's Marc Arcobello.

Tenacious D-eFazio: Comets winger Brandon DeFazio had points in each of Utica's three games this past weekend, which gives him points in six of seven overall (5-1-6). The grizzly winger has now set career highs in both goals (14) and points (27) and is one helper off of his career best of 14.

Workington Comets' trophy win will scare Premier League rivals

Published at 11:01, Saturday, 29 March 2014

WORKINGTON Comets owner Laura Morgan believes that the teams triumph in the Ian Thomas Shield has made the rest of the Premier League sit up and take notice.

Comets dramatically clinched the shield in the final few heats of the second leg against Newcastle Diamonds at Brough Park on Sunday.

Comets won the first leg 33-27 at Derwent Park on Saturday and then lost the away leg 24 hours later 46-44, but secured the shield 77-73 on aggregate.

With the aggregate score at 66-66 in the second leg, heat 13 proved the turning point for Comets.

Workington recorded a 5-1, with captain Rene Bach bagging first and number one Josh Grajczonek securing second.

Morgan said: What the riders have done over the weekend is said this is us and this is what we can do. Quite a few teams will have sat up and taken notice.

When Josh and Rene went out in heat 13 I was totally confident and at ease. I wasnt worried at all, added Morgan, pictured. I was pleased to see Rene getting himself going on the Sunday.

Its good for Rene and good for the team. He put in an excellent performance, as did Josh and Kyle [Howarth]. I couldnt fault any of them.

Mason [Campton] had a rocky start but finished it with a good win. Everyone was happy and the squad are absolutely delighted.

Workington speedway owner predicts 'exciting racing' against Glasgow

Last updated at 13:34, Friday, 28 March 2014

Workington Comets owner Laura Morgan believes the team has built a platform for success this season after clinching the Ian Thomas Shield.

Laura Morgan

Captain Rene Bach lifted the sides first silverware of the season on Sunday after Comets beat Newcastle Diamonds 77-73 on aggregate.

Comets won the first leg 33-27 at Derwent Park on Saturday and a 46-44 loss in the return leg at Brough Park still saw them take the shield.

Morgan said: Its a fantastic start of the season for all the boys. They have built a platform so they can continue throughout the season.

When we went across to Newcastle with only six points I didnt know which way it would go. They did far better than I expected us to do. There was some gutsy riding from all of them.

Comets quest for more silverware gets under way tomorrow when Glasgow Tigers visit Derwent Park in the League Cup.

Workington face home and away ties against Glasgow, Edinburgh and Berwick in their group.

But Morgan is confident of her sides chances ahead of Glasgows visit.

Inside the Comets: Director of Communications Mark Caswell, Jr.

March 26, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets Someone, please get Mark Caswell, Jr. a pair of sneakers to wear in The AUD.

When going to the Utica Comets staff page on the web, as you scroll halfway down, "Mark Caswell, Jr. - Director of Communications" is found. However, when The AUD's doors swing open for business, the Utica native is more than likely among the first to be flagged down by a multitude of people.

From the response Caswell, 28, receives, either walking the corridor inside The AUD, or seating aisles, everyone seems to know or have a connection to him. He smiles and shakes hands, seemingly personalizing each contact, with sincerity and understanding. In another profession Caswell could be well-prepared for an elective position. When shadowing Caswell what you see is what you get.

On a cold Wednesday February evening, the southwest based San Antonio Rampage are visiting Utica for a date with the Comets. For the better part of 20 minutes, I have been in search of Caswell. The press box, the Comets office, and the team locker rooms, usual haunts by the club's communications director, prior to game time show no trace of him. Walking from one end of The AUD's corridor to the other, Caswell is finally located.

It's 6:15pm, with all his pending demands for the evening ahead, it's at the 50/50 raffle kiosk where the communication director is keeping busy. Outside of section 215, what has become a big business boom for the Comets' charitable arm of the 50/50 offerings, the kiosk isn't working properly. A steady line of would-be customers are lining up for their chance to leave the evening several thousands of dollars richer.

With the kiosk's attendant having difficulty signing in, Caswell, a social media/computer specialist, within minutes solves the problem. Comets commerce resumes with gusto. Then, what has become familiar since opening night last October, the Caswell speed-walk kicks off. Tonight's starting line is a brief visit to the media room. Across from the now fully functional kiosk are stairs leading to ground level of The AUD.

Picking up a bottle of Coca~Cola, Caswell heads for his next "house call". Moving with the energy of someone who is just coming off an eight-hour sleep, when in actuality quite the opposite has been experienced by the former ESPN Stats Analyst. On this game day, as is routine with all Comets home dates, by puck drop, Caswell will already have put in close to a dozen hours of work.

Equipped with a key to the office, by 7:30am Caswell begins to ramp up the necessities for the night's activities. "The home team supplies the league stats, we print and supply game notes for the coaches and in the press box," Caswell said while en route to the Comets locker room.

There are two junior Comets players who appear to be between five and seven-years old; tonight's "tunnel team". Positioned against the wall, next to the open glass leading on to the ice, with their parents watching off to the side, these two fans get to give and receive high-fives to the players. Led by goalie Joacim Eriksson, followed by Nicklas Jensen, one by one the excited twosome give their hockey heroes an appreciative send-off.

Requests continued to come in as Caswell's phone constantly goes off. The next crisis requiring Caswell's undivided attention comes from the Rampage's coaching room. The team's video equipment isn't working. With difficulties in the electrical connections Caswell, who attended SUNY Cortland and studied Sports Management, puts out a call for an electrician.
