Anatomy of a wild-card win: The three-pronged plan that has Tampa Bays offense humming – Yahoo Sports

When the Buccaneers face the Washington Football Team in the wild-card round on Saturday night, the obvious issue for the Bucs offense is a Washington defensive line stacked with five first-round picks (Chase Young, Montez Sweat, Jonathan Allen, Daron Payne, and Ryan Kerrigan) and the interior pressure that front five can create.

Interior pressure has always been Bradys Kryptonite (as one half-smart football scholar pointed out this week), and Brady has not been great at all under pressure this season per Pro Football Focus, hes faced pressure on 155 of his 636 dropbacks, and hes completed 57 of 130 attempts for 675 yards, four touchdowns, five interceptions, and a passer rating of 54.5 the ninth-worst passer rating under pressure among quarterbacks who have taken at least 50% of their teams snaps.

But if Tampa Bays offensive line is able to mitigate that furious pass rush and with guards Alex Cappa and Ali Marpet and center Ryan Jensen, they very well could Washington could be in big trouble in a big hurry.

The relationship between Brady and Bucs head coach Bruce Arians and offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich has taken a while to solidify, but its happened in the last month, for multiple reasons. After a first half of the season in which Brady and his receivers were rarely on the same page, leading to some embarrassing helium throws, everyones adhered themselves to the same playbook. Brady and his targets are in sync, and Arians and Leftwich have this offense humming with three things play-action, pre-snaop motion, and 12 personnel two tight ends, two receivers, and one running back.

Story continues

Brady had just 67 play-action snaps from Weeks 1-9 the third-fewest in the league behind Philip Rivers and Kirk Cousins and he threw six touchdown passes to two interceptions. Without play-action, he threw 14 touchdowns and five picks. In Weeks 10-17, Brady dropped back on 58 snaps with play-action in Weeks 10-17 with seven touchdowns and one interception to show for it. Without play-action in the second half of the season, Brady threw 13 touchdown passes to four picks. So, maybe its time to dial that up a bit more.

Arians has been resistant to pre-snap motion this season, saying at one point that Peyton Manning didnt need it when Arians was coaching Manning with the Colts from 1998 through 2000, but its a different league now, and Brady benefited greatly from motion during his time with the Patriots. Brady has utilized pre-snap motion for years to help discern coverage concepts, to isolate and remove specific defenders, and to give his receivers an advantage that their physical gifts dont always present.

But its been a bigger part of Tampa Bays offense lately, and the results are obvious in a positive sense. From ESPNs Seth Walder:

This touchdown from Brady to Chris Godwin last Sunday is a perfect example of how motioning a receiver across the formation not only gives Brady a zone indicator, but also creates an unfavorable matchup for the Falcons defense. Safety Keanu Neal checks linebacker Foyesade Oluokun to trail Godwin on the slot fade, and thats not the best call.

Add in the specter of 12 personnel, which is the personnel on this play, and another advantage becomes clear with two tight ends in the formation, there are more blockers. This is especially true when one of those tight ends is Rob Gronkowski, the best blocking tight end of his era. Its one reason Brady has been more willing to take deep shots out of 12.

With 12 personnel and play-action since Week 13, Brady completed 12 of 20 passes for 239 yards, 108 air yards, five touchdowns, one interception. On attempts of 20 or more air yards in those same circumstances, Brady had five attempts, four completions, two touchdowns, one interception. If you see the Bucs in 12, the deep shot is coming.

Heres another example against the Lions hapless pass defense in Week 16. The Bucs have Gronk and Cameron Brate aligned to the right side. Subtle pre-snap motion moving Brate inside tells Brady that Detroit is playing man coverage (which Detroit should never do), the stack creates coverage confusion off the snap, and then its yet another Brady-to-Gronk deep fade in which Gronk bodies the poor defender for the 33-yard touchdown.

Its almost like those two guys have been there before.

Washington doesnt play a ton of man coverage theyre more conversant in two-deep stuff. One example: They have 124 pass-defense snaps in quarters, fourth-most in the league behind the Browns, 49ers, and Bills. Brady against quarters this season: 59 of 83 for 680 yards, 481 air yards, eight touchdowns, and two interceptions. So, if the Bucs can keep the pass rush at bay, Brady can hunt and hes clicking in this offense as never before.

Id say every week is getting a little bit better and a little bit more consistent [with] better communication, Brady said of the structure this week. Were all understanding each other a little bit better each week. Football season is tough theres a lot of things to coordinate, theres a lot of moving parts, different players and in and out, youre running different schemes. But I think weve just tried to not take the foot off the gas pedal [and] tried to understand each other a little bit better each week and try to put ourselves in a decent position. Any time you make the playoffs, its a good feeling and its a great opportunity to be playing this weekend. A privilege, I think, for all of us. I think we want to go make the most of it. Playoff football is pretty special to be a part of, and Ill be excited to be out there Saturday night.

Why wouldnt he?

Anatomy of a Goal: Santos sends Crew to the Eastern Conference Final – Massive Report

Welcome back to the Anatomy of a Goal, where each week we dissect one goal (or near goal) from the Columbus Crews previous match.

For the second match of the 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs, we take a look at Pedro Santos 99th minute goal that gave the Crew a 1-0 win against Nashville SC as part of their 2-0 Eastern Conference Semi-Final win on Sunday.

Here is a look at the goal from Columbuss winger.

The Black & Gold took the field against the expansion team following a week of limited contact due to seven positive COVID-19 results within the team. Despite the reduced practice time, the Crew started the match brightly before fading as the first half went on. Nashville led Columbus 8-4 in shots at the half and looked to be the most dangerous side.

After halftime, the Black & Gold found their footing and went on to control most of the second half, holding Nashville to nine more shots for the second half plus extra time while recording 13 of their own. All that was for naught as neither team was able to find the back of the net. Extra time beckoned in at MAPFRE Stadium.

Santos game winner begins with a throw-in deep in the Crews defensive half.

Milton Valenzuela takes aim for Gyasi Zardes via a long throw.

Zardes jostles for position between Alistair Johnston and Walker Zimmerman as the ball drops in.

Johnston gets a glancing header onto the ball but sends it back toward his own goal.

Lucas Zelarayan waits on Johnstons glancing header as he shields off Dave Romney.

Zelarayan is able to hold off Romney and take possession of the ball. Zardes will make a run on one side of the No. 10 while Santos makes a parallel run up the sideline.

The Argentine attacker gathers the ball and turns toward the Nashville goal while his teammates continue their runs.

Zimmerman regroups to provide defensive pressure leaving Zelarayan with three options. He can play a pass up the sideline to Santos, attempt to beat Romney and Zimmerman off the dribble or send a pass out in front of Zardes.

Holding off Zimmerman, Zelarayan somehow hits an outside-of-the-right-foot pass around Romney and into the path of Zardes.

Zardes sprints toward the ball while Santos continues his run up the sideline.

The attack is on and the Crew reposition. Zardes will continue his diagonal run toward the sideline and the ball. Santos, seeing Zardes run up the sideline, will arc toward the middle of the goal. Luis Diaz heads toward the back post while Darlington Nagbe makes a trailing run to the top and middle of the goal box.

Santos cuts toward the penalty box and Zardes continues his sprint to the ball. Zimmermans run forward and subsequent pressure leave ample open space between the defense and goalkeeper Joe Willis.

Zardes reaches the ball and takes a touch to redirect its path into the goal box. Santos continues his run to the middle of the 18-yard box while Diaz shifts toward the back post.

Zardes approaches the ball and has three options. He can play a long cross toward Diaz, a pass on the ground to Santos or carry the ball closer to the goal.

The Columbus striker sees Santos and hits a low, diagonal pass toward the winger.

Zardes pass goes right between Romneys legs on its path toward Santos.

The ball slides right between Dax McCarty and Johnston as Santos approaches.

Santos plant foot slides out front under him as he goes to hit a first-touch shot on goal.

The Portuguese is still able to connect, sending the ball toward the post furthest from Willis.

Willis dives too late and the ball rolls under his outstretched arms...

...and into the back of the net!

Anatomy of a K drama Scene: How Kim Seon Ho, halmeoni’s finale moment cemented the duo as Start Up’s best part – PINKVILLA

*SPOILERS ALERT* In today's edition of Anatomy of a K-drama Scene, we look at Kim Seon-ho and Kim Hae-sook's emotional embrace from Start-Up Ep 16 which also happened to be their last sequence in the popular drama.

*SPOILERS ALERT* As Start-Up; starring Suzy, Nam Joo-hyuk, Kim Seon-ho and Kang Han-na, has finally reached its conclusion leaving fans in a mess of emotions, today's Anatomy of a K-drama Scene is dedicated to the best relationship in the popular tvN drama: Han Ji-pyeong (Seon-ho) and halmeoni (Kim Hae-sook). We're specifically looking at the duo's final sequence inStart-Up Ep 16.

After halmeoni finds out that Nam Do-san (Joo-hyuk) is back and reunited with Seo Dal-mi (Suzy), halmeoni is ecstatic but finds herself thinking about her 'good boy' Ji-pyeong and how alone he must be right now. Especially with sacrificing his love for Dal-mi so she can have her happy ending with Do-san. Halmeoni immediately makes her way to Ji-pyeong's house, which shocks the latter as he knows about her illness (Halmeoni was dropped off by her daughter-in-law Cha Ah-hyun [Song Seon-mi]). As his forever doting guardian angel, halmeoni brings corn dogs and Yakult to cheer Ji-pyeong up. Even in Start-Up Ep 15, it was revealed that one of the things that halmeoni found some hope in amid her blindness was feeding Ji-pyeong.

While halmeoni noted how Dal-mi had told her Ji-pyeong's house was amazing and that it's a shame she didn't see it before, Ji-pyeong has a smile on his face over the food, which is different from his earlier solemn expression. There's a feeling of immediate comfort that Ji-pyeong has always felt when it comes to halmeoni, who is the closest thing to a family for him.

Ji-pyeong brings up the topic of paying off halmeoni's 'emotional support' debt on him by saying he'll buy her an apartment which ticks the latter off and she berates him on the same. "If you feel so bad, do something nice for someone worse off than me," halmeoni states. This inspires Ji-pyeong to eventually invest in Hong Ji-seok's (Yeo Jin-goo cameo) start-up company for orphans as revealed later in Start-Up Ep 16.

When Ji-pyeong exclaims that he owes her and if he were in halmeoni's place, he'd have already gotten it over with, halmeoni gets scared because she thinks her good boy might be leaving Seoul because he can't deal with the heartbreak. While reassuring halmeoni that he's not going anywhere, Ji-pyeong recalls the latter's Ep 1 words to his younger self: "Promise me. If you become successful, don't call me. Don't call me if you become rich and get married. Don't call me if you're happy. I don't want to feel jealous. But call me... if you're going through a rough patch. Come to me if it's raining and you have nowhere to go like you once did. Don't just stand in the rain. You know where to find the keys."

Ji-pyeong tries to lie saying he is doing "a bit to well" but is interrupted by halmeoni, who states, "Don't do that. Call me even if you're doing well. Visit me often. Come see me whether something happens or not... Just come over. Come over and talk nonsense. I'm almost deaf and blind now. You can say and do anything in front of me. Laugh and cry all you want. I won't ask why. So come see me often. You shouldn't get too used to being alone. Don't... become any lonelier, Jipyeong, okay?" As Ji-pyeong fights through his tears and agrees, halmeoni gently reaches for the former's face, wipes his tears and envelops him in a tight embrace. Ji-pyeong's tough exterior immediately shambles as halmeoni sweetly chants, "It's okay. Don't cry. I'm here for you," patting Ji-pyeong's back offering comfort.

The parallels when it comes toStart-Up'sstorytelling have always left fans amazed (the letters, the girl on the swing) but it's the relationship between Ji-pyeong and halmeoni which we will most admire and what will have an impactful effect when we think about Start-Up, years from now. Halmeoni proved yet again in Start-Up Ep 16 just how important her good boy is to her and how much she cares for his happiness. She knows him like the back of her hand, even when blind. Ji-pyeong's confused state of mind over his heartbreak is given more closure knowing that he doesn't have to distance himself from halmeoni because of his feelings for Dal-mi as halmeoni will not allow it.

In their last sequence, it's the subtle hand movements, especially when halmeoni doesn't let go of Ji-pyeong's hand, which tells us that even though Ji-pyeong didn't get the girl at the end, he still has his family and that sometimes is more than enough.

Thursday Night Football Returns To Top Ratings; Greys Anatomy Paces ABC – Deadline

Foxs game pitting the Los Angeles Rams against the New England Patriots scored a night-leading 2.3 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic and 9.12 million viewers, returning to action after last weeks game was postponed because of positive Covid-19 tests.

The game, a 24-3 Rams win, was the first TNF tilt since November 19, an NFC West showdown between Seattle and Arizona. Last night was off three tenths in the demo from that Seahawks victory in early Nielsen Live+Same Day fast nationals, which because of the nature of live sports will likely see adjusted numbers later today.

ABCs full night of originals paced the scripted side last night, with Greys Anatomy (1.1, 5.50M) dipping a tenth from last week but still finishing as the nights top-rated non-sports program. Station 19 (0.8, 5.40M) was steady, while A Million Little Things (0.5, 5.34M)) grew a tenth.

NBC aired an all-specials lineup last night with the two-hour One Night Only: The Best of Broadway (0.5, 3.54M) followed by the reveal of the Time Person of the Year (0.3, 2.44M).

CBS was in repeats last night save for Star Trek: Discovery (0.2, 1.58M), even with last week. The CW re-aired its Silent Night A Song for the World special.

Anatomy of play: 49ers TE George Kittles first touchdown pass of the season was the perfect play call – Niners Nation

George Kittle made his return to the starting lineup on Sunday, and the Eagles immediately felt his presence in a big way. The tight end caught 15 passes for 183 yards and one touchdown after missing the last two games due to a knee injury sustained in week one. He was the teams leading receiver and caught more passes than every receiver that had a target for the 49ers that night.

The touchdown pass was on a single high coverage beater in the red zone. Single high in the red zone is already a dangerous game as often times teams cannot adequately cover multiple receivers releasing into vertical routes in such a compressed space where the passes tend to be quicker as well.

Shanahan is a master at exploiting at exploiting single high coverages in the red zone and has done so with regularity over the course of his coaching career.

His best known example of this came in the 2016 divisional round playoffs against the Seahawks when Tevin Coleman caught a touchdown on H scissors out of the back field.

The Seahawks are in a single high coverage, cover-3, and their rules dictate that the corner will travel with the #1 receiver if he goes vertical. The flat route occupies the flat defender, and the safety helps the corner bracket the post route. Easy pickings for Shanahan as Tevin Coleman is left wide open.

On Sunday night, Shanahan called another single high beater for Kittles first touchdown of the season on concept broadly referred to as bench. Bench is a mirrored smash concept with the outside receivers running quick to the flats and the slot receivers running corner routes.

On this particular play, the 49ers are in a condensed 2x2 bunch at the 5-yard line. On the right side of the formation, the route combination is a switch release with a flag route and a drag china route underneath. The formations left side is the more traditional corner by the #2 receiver (Kittle) and the flat route underneath.

The Eagles are in cover-1 single-high coverage. The defenders to the right side of the offensive formation banjo their coverage, meaning the cornerback outside takes the out route by #2 off the switch release, and the inside defender takes the release of #1 inside and up. To the offenses left, linebacker Duke Riley (No. 50) is in man coverage on Kittle.

Riley has essentially no help on the play as Kittle runs by him. Safety Marcus Epps (No. 22) gets caught looking in the backfield instead of moving over to help Riley in coverage when he shouldve been sprinting to help on the backline over the top. The choice route by Jerick McKinnon occupies the defender at the goal line. There was no way Mullens was going to throw the corner route from the far hash.

Mullens drops it in there with the perfect pass over Riley, who doesnt even turn to look for the ball. Kittle makes a nice adjustment to bring it in and get two feet down for the touchdown.

The plays are there for the taking if the offense can execute. Several times this season, both starting quarterbacks have missed opportunities to hit the open guys. Some of that is due to offensive not giving time to throw, some of it is on the quarterbacks for not giving plays a chance to develop or throwing bad passes. But Kyle continues to scheme it up, showing how much he understands his opponents schematic weaknesses.

Why Didnt Greys Anatomy Give Katherine Heigl a Farewell Episode? – Vanity Fair

Even a decade after her departure, Katherine Heigl and Greys Anatomy cant seem to quit each other.

In a new interview published Friday by the Los Angeles Times, showrunner Krista Vernoff said that Heigls character, Dr. Izzie Stevens, was set to receive a farewell episode before Heigl allegedly failed to show up to work.

On every show Ive ever worked on, there are stories you wish you could have told differently, but they were derailed by a behind-the-scenes issue, Vernoff said in the piece, which coincided with the return of Patrick Dempseys long-dead character, Dr. Derek Shepherd, to the Greys Anatomy narrative. And thats the thing that fans dont understand.

According to Vernoff, there was a resolution to Izzies story. We had planned to have her come back for an episode to really properly tie up Izzie and Alex (Justin Chambers). And I wrote that episode, and it was beautiful. The day before it was supposed to start prepping or shooting, I cant remember, we got a call that Katie wasnt coming. Just wasnt coming. Wasnt going to do it.

Vernoff said she spent multiple nights rewriting the script to account for Heigls absence. Im not saying that to bash Katie. I dont know what was happening in her life. I dont know what led to that decision, she said. All I know is that the night before a thing is supposed to start shooting that is entirely centered on one character and the completion of her story arc, I got a phone call that she wasnt coming to do it. Thats what it is to be a TV writer and producer. So, yeah, do I wish I could go back and do that differently? Sure.

A source close to Heigl, however, refuted the claim. This account isnt true. Krista is mistaken, the source told Vanity Fair. Katherine was back in LA after parental leave (when she adopted her daughter) waiting to be called to set.

Heigl made her final appearance on Greys Anatomy in January 2010, during the shows sixth seasonand two years after the actor pulled herself out of Emmy contention, saying that the series hadnt given her good enough material to warrant awards. At the time, the episode was imagined as the start of a hiatus for the actress, who was going on paternal leave after adopting her daughter Naleigh. But Heigl told Entertainment Weekly later that year that her priorities shifted while away from the series.

That was really the turning point for me. So before I was due back, I spoke again to [creator] Shonda [Rhimes] about wanting to leave. Then I waited at home until I was given the formal okay that I was off the show, Heigl said in an April 2010 interview, before commenting on the speculation that she had declined to go back to work. The rumors that I refused to return were totally untrue.

Of her characters hasty exit, which neglected to offer viewers any closure, Heigl added, Even though I know Im disappointing the fans, and I know Im disappointing the writers and my fellow cast members and the crew, I just had to make a choice. I hope I made the right one.

You wish you could have it all exactly the way you want it, she added. But thats not life. I had to try to find the courage to move on. And I am sad. And Im scared. But I felt it was the right thing to do; we just didnt quite know how to do it appropriately, gracefully, and respectfully to the audience. And I think we all felt that it wasnt respectful to the audience to bring [Izzie] back again and then have her [leave] again. We did it twice this season. It starts to feel a little manipulative.

Letter: Wear your mask as an act of love – Hickory Daily Record

Here we are, the election is over, but Covid is still with us, so what to do now? If your person lost the election, maybe you are defiantly not wearing your mask; Ill show'em that my president didnt wear one (he got Covid) so out of my devotion to him, I wont wear a mask!" Despite the fact that 130 Secret Service personnel have Covid and you know about the rest of the White House people.

Have you lost your ever-loving mind? Your mom is yelling in your ear, If your friends jump off the bridge, does that mean its OK for you? Finally the CDC has a solid mask recommendation, wear it for yourself and for the people you love.

I am a Christian, and the Bible instructs me that the second greatest commandment is to love my neighbor as myself." That IS a mask mandate. No governor or local authority has to tell me. I am to treat people the way I want to be treated.

Oh but you say, it infringes on my freedom of choice. Yes, but it may save your life and the lives of the people you love most. Masks, as big a pain in the tush as they can be, work! By wearing a mask, I am protecting you from me, and if you wear one, you are protecting yourself and me. Sounds very biblical to me.

Covid can be mild, hardly noticed. It can be the worst flu youve ever had, or maybe you die. Another plus of mask wearing is that our flu season may be milder. But heres the really scary part. Covid leaves many survivors with heart, lung, digestive, neurological and numerous other problems that hang on long after you think youre over it. This is not the flu; its a real unknown that I want to avoid if possible.

Guest starring COVID-19: How TV shows are addressing the pandemic – CBC.ca

Many of us turn to the TV to escape to a place where everybodyknows your name or maybe an orderly realm where crimes are solved and sickness cured, all in a tidy 42 minutes, plus commercials.

But as TV productionsbegin filming again, an increasing number of TV programs are finding the consequences of COVID-19 are too big to ignore. From South Park to Grey's Anatomy, from The Good Doctor to This Is Us and Diggstown, COVID-19 will have a recurring role this fall.

Thepandemic presents an interesting predicament for shows based in the present. Acknowledge the virus, or offer audiences a break? Wearing masks on camera may be realistic, but it distances the audiences from the faces they love. Then again, the absence of masks, or even any sense of physical contact can feel jarring to watch in 2020.

More than any other genre, medical shows have been affected by the reality of the pandemic inmyriad ways. When the virus began spreading, shows such as The Good Doctor donated PPE as filming stopped. Production has begun again in Vancouverwhere The Good Doctor films. David Shore is the Canadian creator and executive producer. He says when they returned to write the fourth season, they had no choice but to address the pandemic.

"It is the biggest thing that's going on in every one of our lives and it's a medical show. A show about doctors. In the real world, doctors are out there, medical personnel are out there risking their lives."

As with many programs, Shore is trying to strike a balance between giving the audience a respite and reflecting reality. The Good Doctor will begin the first two episodes with its main character, Dr. Shawn Murphy, in the middle ofthe pandemic. Then it will shift back to a pre-pandemic setting. But Shore's hope is the special episodes can do more than help the audience escape.

"If you're only entertaining, then it's a massive waste of an opportunity You have a huge opportunity to not just entertain, but to hopefully inform, hopefully open some eyes and make people think about things a little differently."

The long-running medical drama Grey's Anatomy is also confronting COVID-19 head-on.Recently, star Ellen Pompeo shared a photo of herself in scrubs and a mask, dedicating the new season to the health-care workers who have died from the virus.

The show wrapped its 16th season early due to halt in filmingbrought about by the virus. During the hiatus, doctors who write for the show witnessed the effect of COVID-19first-hand. After hearing from them, producers decided Grey's Anatomy would begin a month and a half into the pandemic.

But the question of telling the story in the midst of an evolving crisis presents new challenges.Angela Watercutter, a writer covering pop culture for WIRED, thinks the biggest challenge for producers is timing. When it comes to dramatizing the pandemic, we're still living and processing the experience. So when do you tell that story?

"Do you do it in two or three years?" she asks."When maybe it's not so fresh in people's minds and not traumatic?"

Watercutter points out films such as Philadelphia and United 93.Whether they were exploring the impact of theAIDS crisis or 9/11,both had the luxury of time and perspective to reflect back on events.

The danger of craftinga show set in the pandemic present, says Wattercutter, is that it will appear dated, or even worse, wrong.

"If you're a writer and writing about, how medicine is dealing with [COVID-19] right now, it may not be how medicine is dealing with it, by the time your show airs."

The solution forFloyd Kane, executive producer and creator of the CBCdrama Diggstown, is to explore thepost-COVID world to come.

While Diggstown is based in Halifax, Kane has been riding out the pandemic in Toronto, while video conferencing with writers preparing for the 3rd season, where he plans to explore the legal consequences of COVID-19.

"The whole issues around landlord tenants, around the health-care system, looking at issues around long-term care homes,I feel like those are things as a legal show we can reallydig our teeth into."

For a show where the main character, Marcie, is still processing trauma, Kane plans to explore the effects of what we've been forced to do, to stay safe.

"I feel like there's something that's interesting about the pandemic where I'd really like to explore the toll in the consequences of this social isolation on people," Kane says.

Whether it's addicts who can't get the help they need or families who have lost loved ones, Kane says they're an abundance of material. While he's still debatinghow much of the pandemic to reflect,Kane says the effects will dwarf any single television season.

"We're going to be living in that world for at least the next five, 10 years. The fallout of this virus is going to be long-lasting."

How TV Shows Have Incorporated COVID-19 Storylines (Photos) – TheWrap

As TV shows begin to return to air this fall, showrunners have had to decide whether or not to incorporate the coronavirus pandemic into their future storylines. From video chat-inspired comedies about quarantine to medical dramas facing the biggest medical story in generation, here's how shows are incorporating COVID-19 into upcoming episodes.

Freeform

NBC

Unlike "Love in the Time of Corona," NBC's "Connecting..." used a Zoom-inspired format, featuring its characters in small, on-screen boxes talking directly to the camera. The series addresses life during the pandemic with the spirit of a traditional ensemble comedy.

Netflix

Netflix's "Social Distance,"from "Orange Is the New Black" creator Jenji Kohan, also employs the video-chat format, though the eight-episode anthology series takes a more grounded tone than its NBC counterpart.

CBS

Comedy Central

Animation has had an easier time adjusting to the new production realities, and Comedy Central's "South Park" made use of that adaptability with September's "Pandemic Special," a standalone episode which saw the show's main cast heading back to school post-lockdown.

ABC

Freeform

ABC

Medical dramas have a unique opportunity to directly address the once-in-a-lifetime pandemic when they return this fall, including ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," which will open with a "Station 19" crossover episode set a few weeks into the onset of the outbreak in Washington.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: People Actually Liked Owen Until He ‘Became the Very Thing He Hated’ – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Greys Anatomy is one of televisions longest-running primetime shows of all time, and although it has been on the air for over a decade, fans still love the characters and the stories represented in the series.

The show is full of heart, comedy, romance, and drama, and in spite of the fact that the main cast has undergone some serious shakeups over the years, viewers faithfully return for each successive season.

Still, fans have had issues with certain characters, and recently, they took to Reddit to discuss Owen Hunt, played by Kevin McKidd, and some of his problematic tendencies.

Greys Anatomy premiered in 2005, changing the way that people everywhere looked at television medical dramas. Set in Seattle, the series follows the exploits of Dr. Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo, and her team of friends and coworkers at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

At the beginning of the series, Meredith was a resident just starting out, and over the years, viewers have watched her become an experienced surgeon.

Not only has Greys Anatomy made Ellen Pompeo a star, but it has created massive fanbases for actors such as Patrick Dempsey, Sandra Oh, and Kate Walsh. Critics as well as fans have commended the series on its commitment to medical accuracy, and showrunners have walked away with numerous awards, including a Golden Globe Award.

The series has also scored dozens of nominations for other awards over the years. Just like every other television series, Greys Anatomy has experienced ups and downs but fans have ultimately always returned to the show for updates on all of their favorite characters.

In 2008, a character named Owen Hunt joined Greys Anatomy. Played by Kevin McKidd, Owen became part of the regular cast in season five and has been a mainstay on the show ever since.

As Cristina Yangs love interest, Owen is often torn between his personal and professional obligations and has been shown to suffer from PTSD due to his time spent as a U.S. Army trauma surgeon.

Kevin McKidd has received praise from fans for his work on the show and his chemistry with Sandra Oh is undeniable. Still, there are some viewers who have an issue with Owens personality quirks, and recently, some of those fans took to Reddit to break down the ways that he has changed over the years.

In the beginning, many fans loved Owen and his relationship with Cristina. Still, those same viewers have seen a big change in him in recent seasons, and not a welcome one.

His first season he was great. Then the writers decided to make him into the biggest asshole they could find, one fan posted on Reddit.

Another one stated that the problem for me is that his writing gets really inconsistent in later seasons, which just turns him into someone horrible.

One viewer pointed out that Owen has undergone a major personality change: I liked him best when he was acting too quickly in the trauma bay and asked for advice from the other doctors when they had issues with the way he operated. And when he chastised everyone for being too involved in their own drama to be good doctors. Then he became the very thing he hated. Drama king.

Owen Hunts future on Greys Anatomy is unclear but if fans have their way, he could definitely be facing the prospect of reduced screen time on the series.

Sinai Health Acquires ImmersiveTouch Surgical Simulation Technology To Improve Efficiency and Safety of Procedures – BioSpace

CHICAGO, Sept. 15, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --Sinai Health System in Chicago is one of the first level-1 trauma centers in the United States to install ImmersiveTouchvirtual-reality surgical simulation technology to improve surgical procedures. The ImmersiveTouch software suite combines medical imaging and proprietary virtual-reality surgical simulation technology to provide surgeons with an intuitive way to plan treatment for trauma cases with an in-depth view of their patients' complex conditions. With ImmersiveTouch, the surgeon uses an interactive 3D virtual reality model of a patient's anatomy to create a patient-specific surgical plan. After the procedure, the surgeon compares the preoperative plan with a postoperative model using intraoperative medical scansto verify a successful procedure, which may lead to less readmissions.

"We are a Level 1 trauma center in the middle of Chicago, and so what I like about ImmersiveTouch is that it's not expensive but it adds value to our system," said Dr. Matthew Ranzer, MD. "The ability to simulate surgery in VR makes our operations more efficient and safer for our patients, which provides a real savings to our hospital and a benefit to our community."

Today, in a growing number of hospitals, surgeons are using ImmersiveTouch to rehearse their operation on a virtual 3D model of the patient's anatomy before the operation begins. The surgeon now has the ability to simulate the procedure in virtual reality where he or she can test and refine surgical techniques, learn the nuances of the patient's unique anatomy, and anticipate difficulties that may arise during the operation. With VR, both the surgeon and the patient go into surgery feeling prepared and confident.

Said Pat Banerjee, CEO of ImmersiveTouch, "Our ImmersiveView VR platform aims to save surgeons valuable time during critical trauma procedures while reducing readmissions. We're thrilled and honored to be a trusted partner for Sinai Health System and to see this revolutionary technology offered to more surgeons in our quest to improve patient care."

Biggest Greys Anatomy Returns Over the Years – Us Weekly

Throughout its lengthy run, Greys Anatomy has said goodbye and then hello again to countless popular characters.

As the first series regular to exit from the ABC medical drama, fans were surprised when Isaiah Washington (Preston Burke) returned to Greys Anatomy in 2014 seven years after he was fired for using a homophobic slur during a fight with Patrick Dempsey.

Hes a prepared, energized actor and he was ready to play. I will say, though, he was nervous, creator Shonda Rhimes told Entertainment Weekly about his season 10 return, which served as a way to wrap up Sandra Oh (Cristina Yang)s story line. My first decision and my first responsibility is to the story, she said. I have to be the keeper of the story and make sure that were telling the story we need to tell, regardless of whatever outside factors are involved or whatever history is involved and, frankly, Sandra was so lovely and open to it. It has been a really kind of amazing experience.

The producer added at the time that Isaiah is a person that we all love and have loved for a very long time.

I feel like there have been a lot of people that have been like, How can you do this? Rhimes continued. And I feel very strongly and fully believe in peoples ability to grow and change and learn from their mistakes and when they know better, to do better. If people dont think that, over the course of seven years, its possible for a human being to change, then there really is no future for the human race at all.

While several actors and actresses left Grey Sloan following Washingtons departure, Dempseys exit (and the death of his character, Dr. Derek Shepherd) rocked the fanbase in 2015. Viewers were delighted, however, when he appeared in several season 17 episodes through Meredith (Ellen Pompeo)s dreams as she battled coronavirus.

Theres just so much darkness, and we knew that coming together would be a little ray of light, Pompeo told Deadline about reuniting with her former onscreen husband in 2020. And so, I think we had the same idea, at the core, to want to help people and bring a smile to peoples faces. So, he loved the idea, and we were just so excited, and we had a ball filming it. It was very healing to come back, and know that were doing something good, putting out a positive story, a healing story, going to make people smile, and I think, for me, Im really grateful for the opportunity to be able to be at this place in the show where we can do this.

The following season, viewers were in for another surprise when Scott Speedman, who appeared on a season 14 episode as Dr. Nick Marsh, ran into Meredith in Minnesota. After the episode aired in September 2021, news broke that the Felicity alum would be a series regular for season 18.

It is timing. To be totally honest, the last time wasnt the right time. I havent done a show since the last show I did. I think a lot of people love that schedule, and I really do, too, but I was wanting to do other things, the actor told Deadline about joining the cast four years after his initial guest star role. But you always know, you put something in the back of your mind when you do have chemistry with somebody, and you do enjoy the work experience, because thats rare, actually. So, when this opportunity came around, I was trying to think of why not to do it, and I couldnt come up with any reasons. It was a great show, really fun people, and it just felt the right timing for me. I wanted to jump in, and then, when I heard what the storyline could be, that was exciting to me.

Greys Anatomy airs on ABC Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET. Scroll through for more on the biggest returns over the years:

Its obvious changes need to happen. But therein lies the question: What exactly is the problem?

Thats the topic Nick, Shaun, and Ann tackle in this weeks OTF Podcast episode. How much blame should be on the players? Is John Hynes doing enough to change the direction of the team? And, the juiciest topic on Twitter this weekend, has David Poiles time in Nashville run its course?

Debbie Allen Reveals the Real Reason Why ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Has Been Such a Success – Parade

Dance Dreams: Hot Chocolate Nutcracker (Nov. 27 on Netflix) provides a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the life and career of Greys Anatomy star and Emmy-winning choreographer Debbie Allen, 70. The documentary shines a spotlight on the Debbie Allen Dance Academy (DADA) as she prepares young dancers for her reimagined holiday production of The Nutcracker.

Why produce your own version of The Nutcracker?

I looked at the origins of The Nutcracker in the U.S. and [how choreographer] George Balanchine was trying to keep the New York City Ballet alive. So I decided to do my version and make it fun and funny.

What do students at your dance academy learn other than dance?

My own sense of discipline, completion, ability to take criticism and go the distance come out of my dance training. They are a byproduct of studying the performing arts. The creative instinct is nurtured, discipline is nurtured by learning to be part of a groupbecause if you do a great leap, someone has to catch you.

Related: Debbie Allen Will Teach You to Dance During the Coronavirus Pandemic

Youre an executive producer, star and director on Greys Anatomy. Why has that show endured?

Its about real people and real relationships. It happens to be in a hospital, which has inspired millions of young people to go into the medical profession, especially women. But at the end of the day, its about falling in love, falling out of love, betrayals, competitions. The people on our show ring so true.

Did you have big dreams as a child?

I spent a lot of time in my backyard in Houston looking up at the stars. Contemplating the universe when I was a little girl, I always saw myself in it, so that was always a big picture. Always.

What inspired you to reinvent The Nutcracker with rats instead of the Mouse King?

Everybody grows up with The Nutcracker. It was something that I dreamed about when I was a little kid and there were no productions that had Black kids in Houston. I remember doing Welcome to Flowerland as part of a church thing, and I participated in a lot of different Nutcrackers.

One day I took my son Thumpety [Norm Nixon Jr.], my niece Condola Rashad and my daughter, Vivian, to The Nutcracker downtown. And right in the middle of the show, Thumpety, my son, was just bored to death. He was just like, Uugghh. He couldnt have been more than about 4 or 5 years old, and he screamed out loud right in the middle of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, When is the rat coming?! And the audience howled. Oh, my God, they laughed. I was so embarrassed, but it was so cute. And I realized they wanted to see a rat; he didnt want to see the Mouse King.

This is a family affair. Your husband and daughter are involved, and your son was the inspiration. Was it hard to rope them in?

It has its challenges because everybody has their own ideas. Theyve grown up with me. Theyve been on the plane when I went to London to do Carrie. Theyve been with me everywhere Ive gone, including when I went to China as cultural ambassador [of dance] for the United States. They have always been a part of my life.

Youre going to be remembered for your roles, your directing and producing, and choreography, but Hot Chocolate Nutcracker will introduce people to this other side of you, which is opening doors for people of color in the dance world. Youll be remembered also by the children whose lives that you touch.

I call them my DADA diaspora, because now were 20 years old and they are everywhere. My kids are everywhere and doing such wonderful things. Improving the quality of life for people in their community, sharing their gifts, inspiring other young people to do what they have done through their learning, creating nonprofits.

DADA provides life lessons every day. It trains them to be ready to get out in the world, be adults, and be the ones that create opportunity or make decisions. Everything that were teaching is really developing their humanity.

On Nov. 14 we celebrated our 20th anniversary in the parking lot of the Rose Bowl, and the real focus of this celebration was those kids, who they are, where they are, and what theyre doing. I cant even do them all, theres so many of them. Theyre in some of the best universities, full-scholarship students, dancing with great companies, in television series, creating nonprofits, doing programming to help women who are battered and abused. Theyre doing all of these wonderful things.

It feels like I have birthed another nation, if you will, another generation along with my own kids. And thats something that I take very seriously, and Im still doing it every day.

Related: How to Vote for Your Favorite Couple on Dancing With the Stars

In the time of coronavirus, obviously, you wont be doing a production this year, which is your big fundraiser to provide scholarships for some of your DADA students. So how will you keep going?

Well, first of all, we responded to this metamorphosis, if you will, this evolution of the virtual world. So many dance schools have closed, so many performing arts centers are closed, and we know the theaters are dark and the concert world. Film and television are just now getting back up to producing, and a lot of those productions have also shut down again when they didnt have the right COVID protocols.

So I was adamant that, OK, weve got to shut the doors, but were not shutting down. I started teaching my live Instagram class and I just did it as a gift. And then I realized thousands of people were taking the class, so I did it every week. Ive been doing it since March every Wednesday at one oclock. And Saturday I started a class for the younger ones because its turned into a whole other thing.

But how do we survive this as the academy? The fundraiser, the drive-in gala at the Rose Bowl parking lot, was a big deal for us with people at a drive-in in their cars having a live experience with people they quarantine with, so its safe. But we are indebted to the foundations and people that support us.

Wallis Annenberg and the Annenberg Foundation have supported DADA for I would say the better part of almost 20 years, and the Berry Gordy Family Foundation, and the David Kobrin Foundation. Recently, were getting grants because were in the middle of a capital campaign. This couldnt be a worse time to be trying to build a building, but were moving forward. We have to. We have to because we know the doors are going to open and were going to be ready to take the kids back in.

People see what we do. They see that its all going to the kids. Its all going to what its supposed to be. For 20 years, we had a really great record of what we do, and right now the kids need it more than ever. Can you imagine how exhausted they are from Zoom classes and virtual everything? So when we have a Zoom class and its live, thats something. And we have very small classes at the studio. We used to have a studio with 30 to 40 kids, we cant do that anymore. Some classes are four, five kids.

Between DADA and Greys, your dance card is pretty full, but last season you guest starred as Shemar Moores mother on S.W.A.T. Any chance that youll be back this season?

They shoot on Saturdays, actually, so Im waiting to get that call from Shemar. Debbie, come on. I need you to come back. And when he calls, Ill try to figure it out. Everybodys under such strict protocols and testing. Any show thats really working is kind of OK. But I had a good time being his mom. He is such a lovely man in real life and has such a big heart about the world, and is so wanting his show to reflect what is happening in the world right now.

Who do you credit for the success story that is your life and the barriers you have broken?

I have to credit my mother, Vivian Ayers Allen, because she raised usme, Phylicia [Rashad], Tex and my baby brother, Huey, who came much later. She really instilled in us a sense that we are children of the universe and that there were no borders and no boundaries in the real world. W
e got a sense of that when she took us to Mexico. It was the first time we could go to a lunch counter and have lunch because it wasnt segregated.

My mother instilled in us a sense of space, and creativity, and productivity, and that we were born to go and do something. Its no surprise Phylicias as successful as she is, and me, and my brother Tex, and my brother Hueys a successful banker. Thank God somebody can write a check.

Hanney, Unlimited Priorities president, states "publication of this new collection highlights Accessible Archives' ongoing commitment to provide essential historical content that opens a window into the life of America, and in terms of this new series, what motivated (and still does motivate) the American people to action."

Part I: Newspapers, 1729-1922

Provides in real-time reporting of an event, place, or person. These articles take the reader from the Boston Tea Party to Turner's Rebellion to the New York City Draft Riots to Haymarket Strike to the anti-Communist demonstrations of the early 1920s.

Popular editorials from the person on the street, the rioter and protester, and the leaders' points of view, professed goals, and personal opinions are presented for the reader to assess and understand the meaning and motivations of popular protest actions.

Part II: Books, 1701-1928

This collection offers both a historical overview and a framework for understanding protest and its movements in American history. Woven into the fabric of local and regional history, Part II provides an engaging narrative history on social, political, and economic movements and their actions.

This historical archive includes a significant breadth of coverage of various popular movements, their leaders, and adversaries, while bringing to life the voices of protest and reaction to the issues of their day.
