Sandra Oh tells ET Canada shes not likely to reprise her role on the long-running medical drama anytime soon.

Im extremely grateful that youre asking me that question because if that means that people are still invested and interested in Cristina Yang, a character who I left six years agothen Im really grateful for it, she says, ruling out the reappearance of Dr. Yang in the eventual series finale. There are so many new projects and Im a different person so Id have to say no.'

One of those new projects shes, well, over the moon about is the upcoming Netflix animated feature film Over The Moon.

The movie tells the story of a young Chinese girl who builds a rocket in an attempt to meet a mythical moon goddess. Oh voices one of the films characters, alongside a voice cast that includes Ken Jeong, Kimiko Glenn, John Cho, Margaret Cho, Phillipa Soo and Ruthie Ann Miles.

For the Canadian actress, getting to be a part of a story that focuses on a young girl interested in science and technology was part of the allure.

Im so happy to see this in numerous animated films. That the idea of what it is to be a girl is changing, she tells ET Canada. You know one of the ways that youre going to figure out how to solve your problems is not relying on some boy. Its like youre going to rely on yourself.

Looking back and reflecting on her acting career, Oh says that shes been surprised to find herself connecting through people via her television roles on Greys Anatomy and Killing Eve.

I wanted to connect to people, she says of her early acting goals. You know being a performer its like this deep its almost like sense of purpose youre able to feel a fundamental energy which is connection but I did not realize that it would most be in television, she says, adding that her relationship with television has reached the widest audience possible.

Over The Moon arrives on Netflix on Oct. 23.

What the anatomy of Bihar election reveals about political muscle in the state – DailyO

Both Bihar and USA will go to poll amidstthe pandemic. The 7.2 crore voters in Bihar will vote in three phases from October 28, 2020. Man by nature is a political animal, as Aristotle put it. He emphasised on the compulsion of politics, which becomes inevitable when Bihar goesto elections.

Nitish Kumar has been the Chief Minister of Bihar for a long time except for a brief period of nine months when Jitan Ram Manjhi became the CM. Along with BJP, Nitish Kumars party JDU has led the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Bihar for 15 years, other than those three years when the Bihar CM parted ways with the BJP over Narendra Modis appointment as Campaign Committee Chief for 2014 General Elections. Nitish has been a popular CM courtesy his social engineering effort where he carved out Mahadalits after he became CM in 2005, and the welfare-oriented socialist-populist schemes that he has been championing ever since he assumed office. But then, he is up against an anti-incumbency of 15 years.

Nitishs ally BJP has always had a decent cadre in Bihar, but their problem is with leadership. The Deputy CM Sushil Modi doesnt inspire confidence and is largely seen as Nitishs prodigy, who prefers to remain status quoist. Another NDA ally, the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) is confined to a few areas in Bihar. With the demise of Ramvilas Paswan, his son and LJP supremo Chirag Paswan faces the challenge to carry forward his fathers limited legacy. Certain social media political enthusiasts might see him as the next CM, but the facts on the ground do not corroborate with their whims. LJP has never performed well outside Vaishali (Tirhut region) barring the 2005 Assembly elections (Chirag Paswan and Mehboob Ali Kaisar are the only two exceptions).

LJP has decided to field its candidates against JDU but not against BJP, which is being termed as clever political manoeuvring. However, lets not remain oblivious to the fact that it took Nitish 20 years to unseat the Yadav warlords of RJD in Bihar. Hence, it would be unrealistic to assume that Chirag could pose any severe threat to Nitish in the upcoming Assembly elections. However, he might get some sympathy votes due to the demise of LJP patriarch Ramvilas Paswan.

The opposition camp of Mahagathbandhan (MGB) has Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD) and Congress. Despite the popular belief, Lalu continues to be a key factor in Bihar politics. RJDs vote share in 2019 Lok Sabha election was 15.4 per cent amidst a Modi tsunami. So, in the Assembly elections, Lalu Yadav remains a force to reckon with. His sons Tejpratap and Tejasvi also face a litmus test of filling in their fathers shoes. It remains to be seen if they can pull it off this time.

Going byregional analysis, the Bhojpur region can be divided into two Aara, Buxar on one side and Chhapra, Siwan and Gopalganj on the other side of the Ganges. NDA has a stronghold in the Aara-Buxar region, thanks to the relative urbanisation of this block, while the other side of the Ganga remains an RJD stronghold, given the sheer number of Yadavs who swear by Lalu. Convicted or innocent, in jail or outside, the Yadav strongman has a magical influence on his core voters, which is more evident in the Assembly elections and one has to see this to believe. However, BJP riding high on Modi wave made a huge dent in Yadav vote base in last two Lok Sabha elections. The Magadh region consists of capital Patna, Gaya, Nalanda and Jehanabad. This region has witnessed the significant impact of both the NDA and the MGB. BJP has an edge in Patna, thanks to the Kayastha and Baniya votes. But a careful seat selection by the RJD might swing a sizeable Baniya vote from BJP. Nalanda remains a JDU bastion because of the large number of Kurmi voters. South Bihar consisting of Sasaram, Dumrao, and some parts of Aara and Buxar has been good for the BJP. But RJD isnt too far away here.

Seemanchal consisting of Kishanganj, Katihar, Khagadia, Purnea, Farbisganj and Saharsa is traditionally a bastion of MGB. The considerable Muslim population in this area makes it a tough nut to crack for the NDA, though JDU managed to make a small dent in previous elections. With the entry of Owaisis All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM), Seemanchal has now become a different ball game altogether. Qamrul Hoda is the lone AIMIM MLA from Kishanganj and now with Owaisis decision to field his candidates in 50 seats in Bihar, this looks unfavourable for the MGB. The secular arithmetic might change. Owaisi took strong objection to being alleged as a Vote katua (vote splitter), but even a small percent swing could upset the secular arithmetic in Bihar. If the Muslim population of Seemanchal prefers AIMIM over MGB, it is bound to cause a counter polarisation. The result is advantage NDA.

The Tirhut region comprising Vaishali, Hajipur, Samastipur, Muzaffarpur, Begusarai, Sitamarhi, Khagaria are strongholds of RJD. These are primarily rural areas (except Muzaffarpur) with significant Yadav population. Also, the Rajputs have often sided with the RJD in previous elections as they have preferred to remain in the good books of the incumbent RJD for a long time. Late Raghuvansh Prasad Singh was a Rajput leader for the party and the state RJD unit chief Jagdanand Singh also happens to be a strong Rajput leader. The 2010 Assembly clean sweep by NDA in Tirhut is the only exception. Lastly, the Angika region with the towns of Bhagalpur, Banka and Munger have traditionally favoured BJP. This is because the twin factors of upper caste population and urbanisation are said to be on the right side of BJP.

NDA has one face in Bihar, and that is of Nitish Kumar. However, his charisma has surely abated in past few years. PM Modi continues to remain a crowd puller anywhere in India. However, with an ongoing pandemic, the virtual rallies might not engage the voter with the same effect. Not to forget, this is the first election amidst the pandemic, so it will also measure the anti-incumbency impact of Covid-19. Bihar remains an open house.

Training Grounds

Melendez was born and raised in Tampa, Florida, where she danced from age 4 at a small recreational studio. "I did everything from ballet to contemporary, jazz to acro," says Melendez. At 8, she switched to All American Dance Factory and Classical Ballet School, studying and competing in the standard comp-kid fare of jazz, acro, contemporary and hip hop. Yet Melendez found herself drawn to ballet's clear structure. "My first ballet competition was Youth America Grand Prix in 2011," she remembers. "I did it on flat because that was my first year on pointe." Before long, she became a regular in the top five at ADC|IBC, World Ballet Competition, YAGP and New York City Dance Alliance.

Melendez says there wasn't any one lightbulb moment that made her realize ballet was her dream. But that doesn't mean the ballet world wasn't taking notice of her. In 2015, the Ballet West Academy had already offered 15-year-old Tatiana admission to their year-round program when she was spotted at ADC|IBC by Houston Ballet II's ballet master Claudio Muoz, who was judging. "My eyes went right to Tatiana, because her jumps and turns had phenomenal energy," Muoz recalls. That "raw, incredible talent" netted Melendez a full scholarship to the Professional Program at Houston Ballet Academy. After taking time to consider Houston Ballet's rep (contemporary-leaning), her connection with Muoz (strong and encouraging), and friends' testimonials about the year-round program (glowing), Melendez moved into student housing.

In Houston, Melendez saw no shortage of stage time. She was cast in The Nutcracker and Stanton Welch's Cinderella, on top of all her academy performances. She was also one of a few academy dancers picked by company member Oliver Halkowich for his contemporary piece Full Circle.

Between shows, she worked hard. "At my competition studio, we never had pas de deux or full pointe classes," Melendez says. "The grueling academy schedule really polished my technique." Muoz says that in just two years Melendez transformed her own dancing: "Tatiana is the most incredible hard worker I ever saw. She became a beautiful swan, with a classical heart and contemporary soul."

Going Pro, With Cons

After graduation, Melendez headed to Fort Worth, where she'd landed a trainee contract with Texas Ballet Theater. It was a tough transition. "I went from training all day every day, to one morning class followed by standing on the side during hours of rehearsal," she says. Melendez's gifts were far from ignored, though. As a trainee, she danced in the corps of productions like Swan Lake and Beauty and the Beast, was one of six lead women in Ben Stevenson's world premiere Martinu Pieces, and led multiple performances of The Nutcracker as Clara.

At the end of the season, however, Melendez's worst nightmare came true. Her contract was not renewed because, at 5' 1", she was considered too short for the company. "My height had always been an insecurity," Melendez says. "Once, at a ballet competition, someone told me as I came offstage that I would never make it because I'm 'not built for dance.' "

Disappointed, Melendez threw herself into auditioning for classically based companiesonly to be told over and over that, while her technique was great, her size was a nonstarter. "Being told 'no' so many times was really discouraging, because my height is something I can't change," she says. Melendez had even started talking herself into taking a year off from dance when she decided at the last minute to attend Complexions' open call in New York City. "Complexions was always a dream in the back of my head, but I never thought it'd be attainableit wasn't even on my list of places to audition," she remembers.

Taking Flight

Thus began what Melendez calls the hardest, happiest two days of her life. More than 400 dancers showed up to the Complexions' open call in April 2018, but after technique classes and "the fastest I've had to learn choreography, ever," Melendez made it all the way through the final cut. By the end of the two nonstop days, she felt sure that Rhoden's daring, athletic contemporary movement was her true callingbut still assumed she wouldn't get the job.

She needn't have worried. As Desmond Richardson, Complexions' co-founder and co-artistic director says, "Tatiana clearly made her presence known from the moment she walked through the door. I remember Dwight and I saying, 'Wow, she's really something.' Her professionalism, her innate sense of musicality and the sheer force of her were quite nostalgic to me." Rhoden adds, "What made Tatiana stand out was her fearlessness. She applied corrections, dynamics and ideas immediately in the audition. She knows how to cross the t's and dot the i's."

Melendez says that joining Complexions was a complete 180, in the best way possible. Because the company is made up of just 17 dancers, she and other new members were immediately thrown into learning repertoire, performing across the country and internationally, and collaborating with Rhoden in the studio. "Working with Dwight one-on-one is incredible," she says. "Performing choreography actually made on you, using your strengths, is so satisfying. Especially in this work called WOKE that's about issues of social justice, I've really had to dig deep and bring a different dancer out from within myself."

Though she's occasionally felt homesick for the classics, Melendez believes that dancing with Complexions allows her to dance as the fully mature version of herself. "As much as Clara was a fun role, and as much as I love watching classical ballet, I don't want to always be typecast as a little girl," she explains.

After a season and a half of whirlwind touring (so far to New Zealand, Europe and throughout the U.S.) and intense creative process, Melendez's newfound routine with Complexions has sadly been put on pause in the age of the coronavirus. At home in Tampa with family, she has used the hiatus to pursue her other creative passions of drawing and photography, and to teach Complexions rep as part of the company's virtual offerings. Melendez is looking forward to getting back to work with Complexions, and to continued guest appearances with classical companies, like Italy's Roma City Ballet. "Growing up, I thought I had to focus on ju
st ballet or just contemporary if I wanted to be good," she says. "Now I see that having kept my feet in both worlds will help me dance as many roles as I can for as many choreographers as I can to the fullest capacity I canwhich is all I've ever wanted to do." Kelly McCreary Gives Fans a Glimpse into Filming for ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Amid COVID-19 Pandemic – AmoMama

Kelly McCreary of "Grey's Anatomy" gave fans a behind-the-scenes look on the set of the popular show. Due to the coronavirus, there were a plethora of changes made.

On Monday, Kelly McCreary treated loyal fans of "Grey's Anatomy" to an inside look at the new set design amid the coronavirus pandemic. McCreary, 39, has been on the show since 2005.

Her character is the beloved Dr. Maggie Pierece. McCreary's set tour comes courtesy of "Good Morning America," but was filmed by the actress herself with her iPad. The clip is found below.

THREE COVID TESTS WEEKLY

In the nearly five-minute clip, McCreary begins by sharing visuals of her getting tested for COVID-19. The test is done three times a week for the cast and crew. It is just the start of the safety measures that are in place.

McCreary next walks outside and reveals that she is filming on her iPad, which doubles as her script. Thisis because they have gone paperless to reduce the number of items being exchanged.

A QUIET HAIR AND MAKEUP

The actress next gets into hair and makeup. There is no talking allowed in the makeup room to limit the spread of potential COVID-infused germs. The makeup artists aredonned in masks.

For her hair, McCreary puts on her mask once more masks are only removed during filming and makeup and sits in a station which is separated by plexiglass from other stations.

The stylist has sanitized the chair and covers McCreary in a plastic garb. Elsewhere, McCreary's costume reaches her in a hazmat suit, straight from the dryer. At the day's end, she puts it into a bin so no one has to touch it.

THE ZONED OUT GREEN ROOM

McCreary also showcased a green room where the actors hang out in-between scenes. A sign on the wall reads, "Live. Laugh. Distance." And there are chairs separated into zones for social distancing.

Not only is "Grey's Anatomy" seemingly taking all the steps necessary to have a safe environment for filming, but they will also be addressing the pandemic in the new season.

THE SHOW'S RESPONSIBILITY

Executive producer Krista Vernoff spoke on it in July. At first, Vernoff said they would not address COVID-19 because she figured people had "fatigued" of the topic. Co-exec producer, Lynne E Litt, convinced her otherwise.

"I feel like our show has an opportunity and a responsibility to tell some of those stories," Vernoffsaid, referring to the stories they had listened to from real frontline healthcare workers who were in the midst of the crisis.

WHAT VIEWERS CAN EXPECT

The COVID-19 episode will take place weeks into the pandemic and is set to feature footage from back in March when the show cut filming due to the crisis. Filming resumed back in early September.

Earlier this month, Vernoff noted that the "feeling" of the show changed due to the necessary safety measures. Things moved slower, she said. The season premiere will air on November 12.

Anatomy of the Vistara safety video: What went into making the viral ad – Moneycontrol.com

Vistara last week revealed its first in-flight safety video, which has been very well received and is going viral. The safety video is themed on yoga, which has an instructor showcasing various movements in picturesque offbeat locations across the length and breadth of India while giving inflight safety instructions.

While uniquely themed airline safety videos are not uncommon globally (for example, British Airways has had a long-running series featuring famous British comedians, and Qatar Airways has a star-studded football-themed video), and these videos have been proven to be more watched and therefore the safety message better communicated to those who tend to ignore the more staid safety demos and videos, this was a first for India. The fact that it starts with a visual of the spectacular and much-in-the-news Pangong Lake also led to some buzz.

The method behind the madness

The video however was scripted and shot much earlier in September last year and Pangong Lake was chosen as the opening scene simply because it is arguably the most visually spectacular place in India, a place I had personally fallen in love with since I first visited Leh in 2016, scoping it out for Vistaras operations to it that began shortly thereafter.

The team the conceptualised Vistaras safety video was also behind the very well-received and popular 'Vistara Retrojet', an Airbus A320 painted in the colours of the original Tata Air Lines of the 1940s that was founded by JRD Tata and eventually became Air India, and featuring on occasion crew dressed in retro-uniforms harking back to the glory days of flying of the 1950s and 1960s, on flights featuring menus inspired by Taj Hotels and JRD Tatas favourite meals as remembered by their chefs.

The attention to detail and authenticity went as far as the registration of the aircraft itself, VT-ATV, a registration that was originally carried by a Tata Air Lines DC3 aircraft. With no colour photos available anywhere of what the Tata Airlines colours were (other than a bare meal fuselage), the team used its creative imagination to come up with a golden-sepia tinted fuselage, with red lettering and grey cheatlines. The special retro flights became highly sought after, and together with the Retrojet, helped make Vistara into the much recognised, differentiated, and respected brand it is today.

The SpiceJet story

Earlier in 2014, (incidentally spearheaded by key members of the same marketing team that later moved to Vistara), SpiceJet had put faces of pilots and cabin crew billboard-style on a Boeing 737, which it named Red Chilli. This again was a first in India, and it created a lot of buzz as well as energised the staff internally. This was just a couple of months after SpiceJet surprised and delighted passengers on Holi by having supplementary (non-operating) cabin crew gracefully dance in the aisles to Balam Pichkari on several flights. This did initially get the airline in a spot of bother with the regulator because it had never been done in India before, but the matter was settled amicably when it was demonstrated that there was no safety issue, and that such activities were not uncommon on airlines around the world. The Holi dance made headline news for several days, and SpiceJet ticket sales went through the roof during that time, prompting a normally staid finance executive to ask whether we could make the crew dance on every flight.

Jokes aside, there is a very clear and driven rationale and focus behind such disruptive and eye-ball catching marketing. It boils down to the need to be able to build a brand that punches above its weight, to help make up for size and scale disadvantage a brand may have vis-a-viz the market leader. Building a differentiated brand with high recall value also generates pull, giving customers a reason other than just price to select a product or an airline, and perhaps even pay a slight premium for it. To put it simply, the return-on-investment for such initiatives in terms of goodwill (both internal and external), buzz, and incremental sales generated or price extracted, is much higher than one may achieve from more traditional mass advertising, and helps reduce some of the disadvantage of being a smaller player when it comes to driving customer choice. There is also an element of a smaller player working harder to win and retain ones business, a concept wonderfully captured in the 1980s marketing by Avis, the rental car company. It ran a campaign headlined by the words Avis is only No. 2 in rental cars. So why go with us?, accompanied by the slogan We Try Harder (because were #2)!

So the next time an ad, marketing campaign, or video catches your eye, remember, there is a method behind the madness. How boring the world would be if everyone followed the exact same script and there was no room for colour, creativity, originality, and differentiation.

Elizabeth Olsen's portrayalof Wanda Maximoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has seen Scarlet Witch's popularity skyrocket. Like other heroes in the Marvel Universe, she has particularly unique skills and anatomy, all of which have factored into her progression as a character.

Scarlet Witch was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and first appeared in 1964'sX-Men #4. Wanda has always been an incredibly complex character full of rich storylines that delve deep into her personal relationships with her twin brother,husband and children, buther notable appearances in Avengers:Infinity War and Endgame didn't have nearly enough time to do anything but paraphrase her odd family bonds.

However, her MCU appearances did showcase Wanda's supreme ability and outright power on a battlefield. Still, her scenes didn't scratch the surface of her real power. Scarlet Witch has gone through a litany of changes throughout both her comic book and MCU career that showcase how unique and boundless this protagonist truly is.

Wanda and her twin brother Pietroare commonly referred to asmutants, but their powers and abilities have a much more complicated origin. Their powers come from the demon Chthon and were manipulated by the High Evolutionary.

The High Evolutionary played an instrumental role in Wanda's path to becoming the Scarlet Witch. High Evolutionary's claim to fame is the serum that allows him to manipulate and unlock the human genetic code. He decided to build a futuristic citadel in Transia on the Wundagore Mountain to conduct his experiments. While he was trying to cure his lycanthropy with dark magic, he summoned an ancient demon known as Chthon.

Herbery banished the demon but he found traces of its power remaining in a pair of twin infants that were born on themountain --Wanda and Pietro.The High Evolutionary experimented on the twins. Their Chthon influence offered him a window into its world and he wanted to tap into its raw power. However, his experiments were unsuccessful and he left the children with a Romanicouple who had lost their own children.

Wanda eventually fell in love with Vision in the seminal storyVision and the Scarlet Witch by Bill Mantlo, Rick Leonardi, Ian Akin, Brian Garvey, George Roussos and Janice Chiang. Billy and Tommy are referred to as Vision and Scarlet Witch's children, but theywere in no way conceived in a conventional way.

Tommy and Billy are missing shards of a demon brought to life with Wanda's magic. At one point, the children are reabsorbed by the demon they come from, but are reincarnated into their current forms of Wiccan and Speed. Wiccan shares his mother's powers, while Speed has identical powers to his uncle Quicksilver.

Wanda unleashed the full of extent of her chaos magic and it created a reality-altering event known as the House of M, byBrian Michael Bendis, Olivier Coipel, Tim Townsend, and Frank D'Armata.Wanda has a mental breakdown and uses her massive power to change reality so she can get her children back.

This alternate reality sees Magneto and the mutants rise to take control of the world. The X-Men and Avengers join forces to reverse the reality-altering Chaos magic. These events were incredibly impactful and led directly into the Secret Wars events.

Chthon actually came back and possessed Wanda a couple of times. The most recent possession happened during Secret Empire,by Nick Spencer, Rod Reis, Joshua Cassara, Leinil Francis Yu, Gerry Alanguilan, Rachelle Rosenberg, Sunny Gho and Travis Lanham. Hydra uses Chthon to possess Wanda and turn her against the Avengers. It's actually Wanda's former fianc, Doctor Doom, who frees her from Chthon's grip so she canrejoin the Avengers.

Wanda Maximoff's MCU origin shares important similarities to her comic book beginnings, but it hasone major difference. Both versions of Wanda's character were heavily influenced and involved in the political turmoil sweeping her country. After her parents were killed by Stark weapons, she and her twin brother swore to get their revenge, which eventually led to her involvement with the Avengers.

However, Wanda's powers in the MCU weren't created by a demon's magic but an Infinity Stone:The Space Stonem,aka the Tesseract. Wanda and her brother signed up for radical experimentation to end the war in her country of Sokovia. These experiments led to the birth of their extreme powers. While Pietro doesn't make it out of Avengers: Age of Ultron,the Scarlet Witch becomes a staple member of the franchise.

Still Anatomy 101: Exploring The Anatomical Depths Of Batch Distillation – The Whiskey Wash

Pot stills are special vessels they possess this ability (superpower, really) to transform this slightly acidic, alcoholic, carbonated liquid into a more refined, grown-up version of itself. To some, theyre just a shiny pot with a funny looking arm, used to produce higher-proof alcohol; while not untrue, pot stills can be quite diverse. Coming in a range of heights, widths, shapes, and materials from round to square, squat to tall, and copper to clay each still can have its own character. Some might even have unique damage or dents that the distiller believes is the secret sauce.

Many of these characteristics can impact the process or the flavor profile of the spirit. Either way, the still is the heart and soul of the distillery and their uniqueness should be celebrated. However, there are some components that are essential to operation, which can be categorized as: safety, practical features and heating, reflux and flavor development, and condensing and collection. Certainly, there can be variations within each category, and this is what makes distillation such an exciting venture.

Although, there is one area where minimal variation should exist safety.

Distillation is an inherently dangerous process. Heating a solution to remove and concentrate alcohol by vaporization creates a risk for fires and explosions. Therefore, equipment must be designed and operated by trained professionals to prevent such events from occurring. Additionally, the distillery must have standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure correct and safe operation of the equipment.

Outside of fire suppression systems, SOPs, and facility layout, still design should incorporate a few key elements to minimize the risk of explosion or collapse. Pressure relief valves (PRVs) are spring-loaded safety valves that are designed to vent excess pressure to atmosphere when its setpoint is exceeded. However, one must also consider the flammable vapors inside the still and what might happen when they are released. Anti-collapse valves (ACVs) are installed to prevent still collapse due to the formation of a vacuum.

While the activation of the ACV possesses less risk to the operation or distillers safety, it does signal the occurrence of an event that could cause damage to the still. These valves are critical in minimizing the risks of explosion, damage to equipment and property, and injury of personnel. Although, safety doesnt stop here and should be woven into every aspect of still design and operation.

Aside from charging and discharging lines, manways are another essential element; this is a medium-sized opening with a sealed door that allows for cleaning, inspection, and maintenance activities. While it sounds like an entrance, stills are not designed to have people inside and only trained professionals under strict supervision should enter them. When done inappropriately, entering the still can pose serious safety risks and violate safety regulations.

Sight glasses provide a window into the soul of the wash still, which gives the distiller valuable information about what is happening inside. For example, during this initial distillation, foaming can occur inside the still due to the still charge containing a lot of particulate (yeast and/or grain) and dissolved carbon dioxide; the sight glass gives the distiller visibility to prevent flare-ups.

Excessive foaming can lead to entrainment (aka puking) of solids or liquid in the passing vapor and into the spirit, negatively impacting quality. When observed, the distiller can mitigate entrainment by reducing the heat input.

Still heating methods have evolved as the industry has matured and two major types are in use: direct and indirect. Direct-fire is a more traditional practice, where more archaic fuels include the use of wood or coal. While direct-fire stills are still in use, most have been upgraded to more efficient gas burners or electrical elements.

Indirect-fire utilizes steam as the heating medium, typically delivered by coils and/or pans within the pot. Steam is generally preferred due to enhanced safety, improved consistency, and increased operational efficiency.

Although direct-fire has advantages, such as the creation of unique flavor profiles; this is due to the localization of heat and its intimate interaction with components within the wash or beer. In fact, some distilleries have attempted to switch to steam but quickly reverted back due to a shift in flavor profile.

While important, the heating method employed only plays a smaller role in flavor development, especially when compared with elements impacting reflux and rectification level.

During distillation, reflux is essentially a purification step (aka rectification) where liquid is vaporized and condenses back into itself. Rectification is closely tied to the volatility of the components of the matrix. Compounds with lower volatility (water) will readily participate in reflux, therefore enriching compounds with higher volatility (ethanol) in the spirit-stream. In general, this creates a lighter flavor profile with higher alcohol content.

In batch distillation, there are several design elements that can impact the level of reflux, such as: the shoulders, neck, lyne arm, and the pot itself.

Inherently pot design is critical for practical reasons; but, standing out in importance from a rectification standpoint are the pots fill level and construction materials. Fill level impacts the amount of surface area that can participate in heat exchange with the environment; higher fill levels decrease the heat transfer surface area. Heat transfer is also impacted by construction materials; copper is commonplace due to its excellent heat transfer properties. This exchange helps facilitate reflux on the walls of the pot, neck, and shoulders of the still.

Thus, the shape, curvature, width, and height can all have an impact. Above the pot and shoulders is a frustoconical section called the neck. Common designs include plain, ball, lantern, and tray-inserts (in order of rectification). Pot stills with trays within their necks are referred to as hybrid stills, or batch rectifiers, as trays are key design elements of continuous distillation.

Connecting the neck to the condenser is the lyne arm. While the lyne arms primary function is directing vapors to the condenser, it also provides an opportunity for condensation or reflux. Depending on the angle of the lyne arm connection (aka swan neck), there can be an impact on the flavor profile with obtuse angles providing more reflux and acute angles providing the least.

Other rectification design elements exist, such as dephlegmators and purifiers. While not always essential, they provide another opportunity to create a unique spirit. Commonly, these devices use cooling water to condense the passing vapors. Dephlegmators are located in the neck of a hybrid still and the condensed liquid naturally refluxes down. Installed in a downward-sloped lyne arm, purifiers require additional piping to route the condensed liquid back to the pot.

While these partial condensers can be optional, complete condensation of the vapor is requisite in making the final spirit.

Condensation of vapor into liquid (distillate) is usually performed by one of two condenser types: shell and tube or worm and tub. Before the advent of the modern shell and tube condenser, worm and tubs were state-of-the-art. All vapor is routed through a coiled pipe (normally copper) in a tub of cooling water and the condensed vapor is collected.

While not as efficient as their modern-day equivalent, they do have some advantages by providing potentially richer and stronger flavor profiles (i.e. meatiness). Shell and tube condensers are made of tubes within a metal cylinder (shell) filled with water; vapor enters the tubes and condenses on the water-cooled surface. Once condensed, the distiller embarks on the most critical steps of the batch distillation: cuts and collection.

Collection generally occurs through an
intermediary glass box en route to collection vessel(s), called the spirit safe. This is the first opportunity the distiller has to assess and analyze the newly condensed distillate, typically by measuring alcohol with a hydrometer in the spirit safe. With this information, the distiller can determine when to divert to heads, hearts, or tails collection or to terminate distillation altogether.

Samples may also be taken for external assessments, such as appraisal of aromatic properties. Sensory and alcohol level are often used to determine cut points, although it could also be time-based. As with most elements of still design, variation exists; regardless, some version of a spirit safe is integral as the cutting process plays a vital role in final distillate quality.

Pot still to pot still, a Sherry Butt-load of variations can exist. While not entirely responsible for the amount of diversity within the whisk(e)y space or other distilled spirits categories, these differences can play a significant part. Personally, its exciting as a distiller and consumer to reflect on and appreciate this.

Even though some anatomical elements are essential, such as safety features, heat, and the pot itself, still design can be quite dynamic. From frustoconical configurations to dephlegmator, the distiller has many options to contemplate as the still will inevitably become the distillerys heart and soul (dents optional).

We imagine your first encounter with a wind turbine was through the window of your car as you zip down a remote highway. Wind turbines are unforgettable because of their large and impressive stature and are emblematic of the widespread global adoption of this power source as a means to generate more sustainable energy solutions for communities.

India has been at the forefront of renewableenergy revolution and has emerged as the one of the worlds largest and most competitive markets for cleanenergy innovations. Wind power saw a stable growth in the country over the past few decades, and India currently ranks fourth in the global wind energy capacity ranking.

TwoIEEE Power and Energy Society (PES)members, Pouyan Pourbeik and Nicholas Miller, explain how wind power technology works, and why it is so important.

In simplest terms, a wind turbine is a mechanical machine that converts the kinetic energy of wind into mechanical rotational energy that can be used to do some work, says Pourbeik.

Utilizing the natural resource, wind, as a source of energy production is not a new technological practice. In fact, wind turbines have been developed in various ways for several centuries. Pourbeik says that the first recorded wind turbine dates back to the seventh century in Iran and was used to grind grain and pump water from wells.

Todays modern wind turbines are used to run electrical machines that then convert the rotational mechanical energy into electrical energy that can serve the electrical needs of residential homes, commercial buildings and industry, says Pourbeik.

Wind turbines are sustainable because of the power conversion process; by tapping into the wind, the process is cleaner than having to mine or burn material that creates massive amounts of emissions as a result. Wind energy is a solution to reducing those carbon emissions, eliminating other forms of pollution in the air, and eventually moving away from traditional methods that have the opposite effect on our planet.

Another benefit of wind power is that this source of energy is free and bountiful. When I lecture on wind turbine basics, I often start with the statement a wind turbine is a device that converts the kinetic energy in wind/moving air into money, says Miller. The fact that there is electric power generated is incidental.

You cant afford to build a wind turbine that captures all of the available energy all the time, says Miller.

Every technology comes with its own set of challenges that engineers are equipped to solve. Integration into pre-existing power grids and gaining general public awareness of the technology as a sustainable tool are the current hurdles Pourbeik and Miller face as power engineers.

There are challenges with engineering such systems and reliably integrating them into the world-wide electric infrastructure but that is what makes the current technical environment in the field of power and energy engineering so exciting, says Pourbeik.

One of those challenges to the energy grid is energy storage and reliability. Traditionally, when a customer demands electric power, the generation and the power grid is capable of meeting that demand. But with the advent and explosive growth of wind and solar power, it is Mother Nature who decides when the electric power will be supplied, not the consumer, says Miller.

Since the birth of the electric power system in the late 19th and early 20th century, energy has been converted from mechanical energy to electrical energy through the use of rotating electrical machines, which are directly connected to the bulk power grid, explains Pourbeik. These conventional machines run at a constant speed, which means that the frequency of the electrical power they produce is also constant.

Because wind turbine speed is constantly changing due to the wind, power engineers must figure out a way to efficiently convert the wind energy to mechanical rotating energy. The solution is a rotating electrical machine connected to the wind turbine that runs at a wide range of speeds.

So to interface the machine (running at different speeds) to the bulk electrical power system (which has a fixed frequency) one needs to use a power-electronic converter interface, says Pourbeik. Thus, the electrical behavior of the power generating device becomes very different as seen from the grid.

While power-electronic converters have been used in other ways, they have never been used at such a large scale as they are now to connect the heart of wind power plants to the grid. Over the last few decades, the power and energy industry has been learning how to utilize this technology in the most reliable way possible.

Pouyan and I have worked through the first stages of the revolution, says Miller. Since the turn of the century, we have watched (and participated) as innovations in technology, markets, regulation and understanding have steadily moved the challenge out. Today, we (the U.S. and other world grids) regularly operate at levels of wind and solar generation that we thought would be nearly impossible or wouldnt happen for decades into the future.

IEEE PES and the renewable integration community have a large focus on how to make the grid work in a reliable, safe, clean and affordable fashion. But Pourbeik and Miller are hopeful about the future of sustainable energy and the technology being developed.

We are continuing to move at an astonishing rate, adding innovations on all those fronts, says Miller. Very honestly, there has never been a better, more exciting time to be a power engineer.

In the years since Netflix introduced its streaming platform, it has become a juggernaut in the world of entertainment, with not only the quality of its original series rivaling anything seen on any traditional TV networks, but now with its numbers toppling beloved properties. While Nielsen typically covers ratings of broadcast TV events, the organization has revealed its first data about streaming viewership numbers, which shows that Netflix's The Umbrella Academy has been watched more than anything else on that service or on Amazon Prime Video, which includes familiar series like Grey's Anatomy, The Office, and Parks and Recreation. Understandably, part of this is due to the series having premiered its second season in July, but for a relatively unknown series to be besting classic series is surely an impressive feat.

Nielsen released the below top 10 list, per Variety, which features a number of recognizable series.

Interestingly, programs like The Office and Parks and Recreation are both owned by NBC and once 2021 rolls around, these series will no longer be available on Netflix and will exclusively be available on Peacock. Surely some Netflix subscribers will be binge-watching those series before they leave the service, but with months to go before that move, it seems fans haven't started those marathons quite yet.

For those unfamiliar with Umbrella Academy, the series is described, "Five warned his family (so, so many times) that using his powers to escape from Vanyas 2019 apocalypse was risky. Well, he was right the time jump scatters the siblings in time in and around Dallas, Texas. Over a three year period. Starting in 1960. Some, having been stuck in the past for years, have built lives and moved on, certain theyre the only ones who survived. Five is the last to land, smack dab in the middle of a nuclear doomsday, which spoiler alert! turns out is a result of the groups disruption of the timeline (dj vu, anyone?). Now the Umbrella Academy must find a way to reunite, figure out what caused doomsday, put a stop to it, and return to the present timeline to stop that other apocalypse. All while being hunted by a trio of ruthless Swedish assassins. But seriously, no pressure or anything."

Both seasons of The Umbrella Academy are now streaming on Netflix.

Executive producer Debbie Allen teased plenty of drama for season 17 as the series plans to begin shooting the second week of September. Viewers were left hanging as the couple almost reunited only to end the last season at odds again. All I know is that Catherine and Richard are at odds honey, Allen dished with Showbiz Cheat Sheet.

We were in battle when we stopped and thats how we start, she added. So I dont need to tell you more, but its going to be a nice season to see where we land and how we land. Everyone wants us to get back together. Jim [Pickens Jr.] and I are like, We want to kiss again! We want you all to see real love on screen and how mature people play a love scene.

There was no way the medical drama could avoid facing COVID-19 head-on. But Allen isnt sure if the virus will take center stage. I can only say Ive read two scripts and those are the first two Im directing, Allen shared. So Im not totally sure where we are going, but this will fall into place once we are moving forward. But we are dealing with COVID, thats for sure.

The series has touched on newsworthy topics in the past and Allen says addressing racial injustice on the show could be interesting. I would like to see it discussed because you know part of the beauty of Greys is that we never really dealt with a lot of racial issues, Allen said. Because diversity is normal for us here. Richard Webber is Black. Miranda Bailey is Black.

Allen was on her way to a table read when she spoke with Showbiz Cheat Sheet. While the pandemic shutdown will impact when the new fall season begins, Allen wasnt sure when new programming will air. Honestly, nobody knows, she admitted. Were all going forward with the right intent to air on a certain day, but anything could happen. Anything could stop and pull us back.

Hopefully were doing it right and everyone has integrity and is truthful about their health, she continued. Because you rely on peoples integrity to tell you if they have symptoms [of COVID-19]. You rely on peoples integrity to tell you if theyve been exposed to someone who has COVID. She added that production will include plenty of masking and carefully followed protocols.

Anatomy of a Goal: The Unions 22-pass sequence that picked apart the Red Bulls – Brotherly Game

Kacper Przybylko scored the only goal in the 31st minute Tuesday night as the Philadelphia Union beat the New York Red Bulls 1-0 in their first home game since their victory over the Red Bulls last October 20 th in the MLS Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

The Union scored an impressive team goal as if it were straight from the training ground, one in which they connected 22 passes before Przybylko side-footed home Ray Gaddis cross from close range. The goal was Przybylkos second of the season and his first since scoring against Inter Miami in the Unions second game of the MLS is Back Tournament.

For Gaddis, the assist was the 10th in his career and his first since last Septembers game against San Jose. Another notable component of the goal, beside the number of passes, was the patience in which the Union maintained possession and waited for the Red Bulls to lose their shape. Though the Red Bulls displayed some questionable team defending, the Union deserve credit for exploiting that weakness.

The sequence began with a Union throw-in well inside their own half. Instead of pressing, the Red Bulls backed off and conceded possession, something theyd done often throughout the first 30 minutes, and allowed the Union to pass the ball around, in, and out again until eventually dropping inside their own half. This wouldnt be a bad strategy on the road against a Union midfield that is better, but the Red Bulls never pressured, stayed in straight lines, and failed to rotate fast enough. And allowing the Union midfield time and space is like leaving your Wawa hoagie on a beach towel with swarming seagulls.

After 13 passes that backed the Red Bulls into their own half, the first penetrating ball from Mark McKenzie to Jamiro Monteiro through a channel down the left side beat three defenders, exposing those Red Bull gaps and lines. Monteiro had time but was stuck near the sideline with three surrounding defenders, perfect double team position. The Red Bulls were slow to press, and Monteiro pulled the ball back and found Kai Wagner, who passed to Jos Martinez all alone in the middle. Again, New York was slow to react, and Martinez turned and switched the play to an open Alejandro Bedoya on the far right side, a sequence that happened often in the early minutes.

This time, New York rotated, but when Bedoya played the ball back to Jakob Glesnes, they never pulled out or applied pressure. Instead they stayed collapsed, so Glesnes had time to pass to Martinez again in the middle with space, and as Bedoya slid back, Ray Gaddis pushed forward, and Wooten filled Bedoyas spot out wide.

Something important here about offensive shape. As Bedoya played the ball back to Glesnes, Przybylko and Aaronson remained central, which left room wide for Gaddis to run into. The ball from Wooten led Gaddis, which helped Gaddis face the Red Bull defender. He had a look at the flat back four and played a strong swirling ball behind the line away from Red Bulls keeper Ryan Meara, freezing him. A lack of communication between Meara and his central defenders contributed to the goal, but Przybylko was in his wheelhouse, unmarked. Aaron Long barely glanced his way. Przybylko did well to slip in behind the line, meet the ball, and tuck it home off a short hop.

Its energizing for a team to have so many players involved in one goal. And that lift led to several opportunities for Przybylko and Sergio Santos in the second half as the Red Bulls took more chances at the other end. Team goals like this also builds confidence for future games, especially for Przybylko, who needed a poachers goal to prove that hes finding his form.

Summary:

Plate fixation is an established method of treating distal clavicle fractures. However, it is often difficult to maintain the reduction of distal fragments with conventional plates, especially in cases where the distal fragments are small or comminuted. This study aimed to introduce a technical trick and clinical experience of osteosynthesis using an anatomical nonlocking plate with grasping arms (SCORPION NEO plate) for unstable distal clavicle fractures. During fixation, distal fragments are grasped by the plate arms and fixed with 2 screws. We retrospectively reviewed 41 patients who underwent osteosynthesis for unstable distal clavicle fractures (Neer type 2 and 5) using a SCORPION NEO plate. Patients were divided into 2 groups: type unstable 1, where the trapezoid ligament adhered to a distal fragment, and type unstable II (UII), where the trapezoid ligament adhered to a third fragment detached from a distal fragment. Although delayed union, plate loosening, plate-related pain, infection, and stiffness were observed in 2 (4.9%), 2 (4.9%), 3 (7.3%), 1 (2.4%), and 1 patient (2.4%), respectively; all fractures united at the time of final follow-up. Operating time for the UII group was significantly longer than that for the UI group. There were no significant differences between the 2 groups in postoperative complications and coracoclavicular distance ratios at the time of bone union. Our results demonstrated that osteosynthesis with the anatomical plate with grasping arms could be a viable option in the treatment of unstable distal clavicle fractures, especially in cases where distal fragments are not contiguous with the trapezoid ligament.

Apparently, even Greys Anatomy wants to pretend season 17 never happened. Season 18 opens with a quick housekeeping note to let us know that the show will now be portraying a fictional post-pandemic world, and we all get it. Sure, season 17 had a good start. It felt right for a medical show to explore the effects of the pandemic on doctors. And yes, having McDreamy show up on the death beach that first time was life-affirming. But the whole thing quickly morphed into something much more exhausting. So the show never wants to speak of it again, and neither do we, and honestly my condolences to Andrew DeLuca, who deserved better and we all know it.

This season-18 premiere does feel as though things have changed. And its more than just Grey Sloan ditching the masks and the COVID-19 protocols: The OR is buzzing with surgeries! No one is having mental breakdowns on benches! Meredith isnt a doll anymore! We really did it, pals. Its time to hopefully move on to bigger and better things.

For Meredith, might those bigger and better things be located in Minnesota? She hightailed it out of Seattle for a bit to meet with Dr. David Hamilton, or, as Webber calls him, Minnesotas prized-tumor guy, because hes dedicating a library to Ellis Grey. I feel like we walked through the valley of season 17 to be rewarded with Peter Gallagher the Sandy Cohen joining the ranks of Greys. Just eat all the bagels and schmear you have available because, and I say it again, we really did it. Of course, Webber and Bailey are nervous that not only will David be showing her this library, hell also be offering Meredith a new job. They cant afford to lose any more surgeons, and they keep calling her to make sure she isnt abandoning ship. They arent wrong to worry: It doesnt take long for David to reveal his true intentions for bringing Meredith out there. Yes, he dedicated the library to his old friend, but he also built a state-of-the-art research lab, named it the Grey Center, and wants Meredith to have it. Sure, hes impressed with her mini-livers and reconstructed abdomens, etc., but hes currently developing an experimental surgery to possibly cure Parkinsons disease, and he needs a surgeon to become the face of it and persuade the FDA to give him approval. Meredith asks why he, a surgeon, cant do that himself. It turns out that the reason hes so passionate about finding a cure for Parkinsons is because he has it.

That lab certainly is something. Wouldnt it be a real full-circle moment to have this dark and twisty woman leave Seattle for good for something that has been described as bright and shiny? And yeah, sure, helping to cure Parkinsons seems cool too. There is one other thing that might persuade Meredith to actually consider this offer. While out to dinner with David as he wines and dines her in hopes of getting her onboard, she spots a familiar face: Dr. Nick Marsh.

Can you believe it?? After all this time, Greys Anatomy is bringing back Nick! Sure, he was in only one episode back in season 14, but the chemistry between Meredith and the handsome transplant doctor whose life she saved was unreal. It was honestly a shock that they didnt have him stick around for multiple episodes that season because he was very swoony with his flirting, and his raising his niece because his sister couldnt, and his wanting to be a shoe salesman in another life. And, more important, it was the first time post-Derek that Meredith actually imagined the possibility of falling in love again. Nick Marsh did that. And now, years later, she bumps into him in Minnesota.

This guy is insanely confident. When she gets back to her hotel, Merediths escorted to the bar and there he is, waiting for her. The chemistry between the two of them is still very much there. It is palpable. Truly, what a pleasant surprise. However, Meredith does want to make it very clear that she isnt sleeping with him. First, she tells him shes seeing someone, but then immediately backtracks. Apparently, she and Cormac dipped their toes into some dating, but his younger son, Austin, began having panic attacks after learning about his father starting to move on from his mother so they called the whole thing off. I do sincerely feel for anyone patiently waiting for a Meredith-Cormac romance because it seems like youll be waiting for a long time. Sorry for your loss!

Anyway, back to Nick! Meredith is single, but she still wont sleep with him. That doesnt mean the conversation isnt lovely. She tells him about almost dying from COVID, and he obviously thanks to her saving his life knows what its like to be a miracle and understands the pressure that comes with being granted a second chance. He even walks her to her hotel room at the end of the night, and they cant stop smiling at each other. Oh God, they are going to hook up, and it is going to be glorious.

So yes, perhaps Webber and Bailey really should be worried about Meredith moving to Minnesota and losing another surgeon (and their friend, I guess). Its not as if interviews for doctors to replace Avery, Koracick, DeLuca, and Jo have been going well. Theyve been going terribly, to be honest. That is, until the hiring committee Bailey, Cormac, and Maggie meet with plastic surgeon Dr. Lin. She seems great. She has never been the head of a department, but she doesnt mince words as to why Grey Sloan needs her. And then they literally need her: Webber bursts into the interview because a guy exploded a firework directly into his face and he needs a plastic surgeon to save his life. I guess this hospital had only one plastic surgeon this whole time? Regardless, they give Lin privileges, and she gets to work in the OR while also continuing her interview with Bailey, Cormac, and Maggie. She is very good at her job. You know who isnt? The resident assisting her, Schmitt. After the surgery, Bailey offers Lin the position of chief of plastics, but she turns it down. She tells them she relies a lot on residents to help her do her job, and the residents here clearly arent up to snuff. Oof, that hits Richard where it hurts the most. He promises Lin hell get them back into shape; they fell behind because the pandemic kept them out of the OR so much. You have my word, he tells her. Wasnt Meredith supposed to be running the residency program? Maybe that explains this whole situation.

In other news: There is another Greys wedding to attend. Who is getting married now, you ask? Teddy and Owen. Finally. After all these years. And all those sex voice-mails. What a lovely story to tell the grandkids one day! They actually try to have a little ceremony in the park with just their kids, Owens mom, and that abdominal reconstruction herself, his sister Megan. Unfortunately, the priest doing the ceremony gets run over by a bunch of bikers doing an undies bike ride during the Seattle Phoenix Festival and then dies on Teddy and Owens operating table. Wow, I really missed writing sentences like that over hiatus. Anyhoo, obviously, people are upset. Your priest dying right before pronouncing you husband and wife would be looked at by most as a terrible sign. As if Teddy and Owen needed any more of those!

Megan saves the day. Of course she does. She is a breath of fresh air on this show, and it would be nice to have her around more. And maybe she will be, now that Greys Anatomy decided to ruin one of the very few happy endings this show has ever bestowed on us by breaking up Megan and Riggs. After everything! Its a real bummer. She seems okay? Megan gets ordained online, and Owen brings Teddy to Joes Bar, where she is surprised by all of their friends and family, and those two finally get hitched. Its about time someone got married in Joes Bar, isnt it?

Link spends the entire episode brooding about Amelias rejection and then trying to persuade her to marry him. First of all: Why? Second of all: It seemed like Ameli
as problem last season was less that marriage was suffocating and antiquated and more that she doesnt want more kids while Link very much does. Wouldnt that explanation satisfy Link a little more? Instead, Amelia tells Link she loves him but cant marry him. Link thinks its really over this time. Thats the stupidest thing I ever heard, Jo tells him. Jo, you have no idea.

Speaking of Jo, her entry into the single-working-mom world is a bumpy one. She has for some reason dyed her hair blonde and maybe not brushed it in a year? Shes a mess, and she never makes it out of the parking lot because she feels too guilty over the thought of leaving Luna at day care. Shell do better next time.

So when are Jo and Link going to hook up?

Ellis Grey pops up in Merediths anxiety dream about not doing anything extraordinary after surviving COVID. That feels like the most on brand.

It was quite endearing to watch a bumbling, nervous Cormac try to set up a dinner for himself and his boys with Bailey and her family. Its awkward at first, and Bailey tries to avoid it. But later Cormac opens up about Austins panic attacks and not knowing how to help him, and she invites the Hayes brood over. Its very sweet!

Maggie and Winston have honeymoon-sex injuries, and Ive never been happier for them.

New York Times public editor: The anatomy of the Wolfe scandal – Columbia Journalism Review

Last Tuesday, the day before the inauguration of President Joe Biden, an editor at the New York Times found herself in a firestorm of online fury for a tweet she posted that afternoon: Biden landing at Joint Base Andrews now. I have chills.

Some, such as Glenn Greenwald, formerly of The Intercept, saw itand another tweet that followed, which described the Trump administration as childishas a sign that the media would not engage in adversarial coverage of the Biden administration. Many conservatives, like Fox News senior political analyst Brit Hume, saw it as a show of political bias.

By the time Biden was sworn in the next day, Lauren Wolfethe author of the tweethad been informed she was being fired.

Hume told me that while he believes journalists should be presented to the audience as neutral in their news coverage and thinks Wolfes tweet failed to meet that standard, it didnt seem to me to be a fireable offense.

But even after the saga received celebrity-scandal treatment on both sides of the Atlanticcomplete with a paparazzo dispatched to Wolfes Brooklyn neighborhood to snap a picture of her walking her dogmany of the basic facts of the story remain murky.

I spoke to Wolfe, who told me that she had been working as an editor on the Times Flexible Editing Desk, a unit in the newsroom that helps produce the live briefings on major stories, for about nine months. Her position was whats known at the Times as casual, meaning she was paid hourly, with no set schedule. Its intended as a temporary employment status, and Wolfe, who relied on the job as her sole source of income, had hopes of moving over to a full-time position.

Those hopes were dashed when she received a call from her bosss boss in the standards department. (The standards editor did not return my request for comment; Wolfe asked that his name not be included in this story.) I was told on the phone that the chills tweet was why I was fired, she says.

Wolfe says she tried to argue that her tweet was being misread. This was not even a political tweet. I had chills, meaning after the attempted overthrow of our government, the nightmare weve all been through, I had chills watching the democratic process work, she says. And I get where other people are like, I had chills for Biden, but that was not what I was saying. She says the standards editor told her, Im sorry, we cant have this. We cant have our name associated with such things. (Wolfe also says her direct boss, who did not return a call requesting comment, told her, For me, the chills tweet was fine, but the next onethe childish onewas not okay.)

For its part, a Times spokesperson told me, the paper is not going any further publicly than a statement it issued citing privacy concerns as the reason it would not go into its rationale for Wolfes dismissal: Theres a lot of inaccurate information circulating on Twitter. For privacy reasons we dont get into the details of personnel matters but we can say that we didnt end someones employment over a single tweet. Out of respect for the individuals involved we dont plan to comment further. (To clarify something that has been incorrectly reported, Ms. Wolfe was not a full-time employee, nor did she have a contract.)

This stance is standard practice among employers, to avoid giving terminated employees grounds for bringing claims against the companyand the New York Times Guild is currently negotiating on behalf of Wolfe with Times management after issuing a statement citing procedural concerns about her termination. But in this instance, the Times statementspecifically, its insinuation that there had been a pattern of behavioris Wolfes main complaint. I dont want to be hired back, she says. What I want is for them to retract this bullshit statement that makes me sound like some shitty employee that they used this as a final excuse for.

When I asked the Times for further details about any previous issues it had with Wolfes social media behavior, the paper declined, referring me to its statement. I asked Wolfe if there had been prior issues with her conduct on social media; the only incident she could think of was last fall, when she was warned by the standards editor that some of her tweets were bordering on inappropriate.

Paraphrasing, she says that the post at issue was something like Conservatives who wont wear masks are an example of extreme toxic masculinity. She was especially concerned because, in 2018, she had been one of the critics whom Trump blocked on Twitter, which led to a Knight First Amendment Institute lawsuit that went to the Supreme Court. But Wolfe was left with the impression that it was a routine review of the social media policy and, after deleting the tweet, thought the matter was resolved.

Wolfe, forty-five, says editing for the Times was a long-held ambition. I worship the Times, she tells me. I grew up in New York. To me it was the end-all-be-all thing. I mean, my first published story in life was at the Times. Getting a permanent job with the paper had been something of a quest for her.

Last spring, Wolfe leapt at the chance to start working on the Flex Desk and began the year optimistic that she was in line for a position on the new Live team, headed by national editor Marc Lacey, that was announced in early December.

Not being a full-time employee, she says, was also cited as one of the reasons she was fired. In her discussion with the standards department editor, Wolfe says, she was told, If you were full-time, we would have ways of disciplining you. And because youre not, we just have a much higher standard.

That just made me really fucking mad. Youre painting me as some weirdo freelancer. Its not true, she says. Im sorry. Im really emotional, because I loved my job and I know I did well. And Im just mortified theyd characterize me this way.

What is left is another example of how easy it is to derail a career with one tweet. The social media guidelines the Times demands its employees follow are vague, focused less on the content of a post and more on how it is read by others; the guidelines bar anything else that undercuts the Timess journalistic reputation or that appear[s] to take sides on issues. That means Times staffers do not have a clear way of knowing if theyre committing a fireable offense before they press post.

One of the terrible things about Twitter and one of the main reasons wed all probably be better off paying less attention to itthough, of course, I have just amplified it further with this columnis the way it can take a morsel of fact and, through a viral haze of likes and retweets, transform it into a grand and urgent saga.

And until the Times has clearer rules of the road for its newsroom, it would be understandable if more editors and reporters make the decision to simply stop tweeting.

Katherine Heigl was arguably one of the most famous television stars for the character of Dr. Izzie Stevens on Shonda Rhimes hit medical drama Greys Anatomy. This role brought her recognition and accolades including Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in the year 2007. After sheoptedout of Emmy's nomination in 2008,it was rumoured that her contract could get terminated that year butshe said the final goodbye to the show in 2010.

This is Christopher Nolan. Im the director and writer of Tenet. Early in the film, the protagonist played by John David Washington and Neil played by Robert Pattinson, they travel to Mumbai. And theyre tasked with breaking into something thats fairly unique to Mumbai, these high rise houses. So its like a mansion that rather than being wide on the ground, its vertical in the air. These aerials are some of the first aerials that any film company has been allowed to shoot in Mumbai ever. And it was a lot of coordination with the government to allow that to happen. But its a spectacular city and it was something I was very keen to get into the texture of the film. The hardware used to do this stunt obviously stuff weve made up these winches and so forth. Its an arborist catapult putting the line over the rail there. And we spent a lot of time talking to the stunt guys about how they could do this, and they came up with the way of having John David and Rob as you see here actually launch into the air. Theres a cut there very invisible by Jen Lame my great editor to the stunt guys who then were launched the entire way up the building for real. No CG. And here we see John David Washington showing his physical prowess as the protagonist, and Rob with the slightly more loose character of Neil. A little less disciplined but similarly skilled. Were getting our first glimpse there of Dimple Kapadia a great Bollywood actress who has lent her talents to the film. Denzil Smith is a co-star there, hes also well known in India. We shot in a real house. The family who allowed us to shoot there were incredibly welcoming. A lot of this stuff would normally be done you do the interiors in a set, so forth. We tried to do it all right there overlooking the ocean in Mumbai. This is the setup really for the character. We want to show his ruthless side, we want to show his skill. But what John David is able to bring to this is a sort of generosity of spirit, its a very warm presence. So not just pure sort of cynicism. My friend, guns are never conducive to a productive negotiation. Im not the man they send to negotiate or the man they send to make deals. But I am the man people talk to. It was such fun to come and be a part of the Mumbai film industry for a few days. I mean we were able to work with the most amazing local crew there. To say anything about a client would violate the tenet he lives by. And at the end here, we have the reveal of Dimple Kapadia who plays Priya. It was a delight working with her, and getting to work in Mumbai on this film. Sanjay, make a drink for our guest, please.
