Collins Aerospaces new president, Interiors, Troy Brunk is convinced the airline passenger experience as we know it will change in a post-pandemic world. Whether that new reality includes long-term social distancing on board remains to be seen, but its here for a spell.

The only thing we know for certain is that as long as COVID-19 remains an issue for the world, social distancing is here to stay for a while. I dont want to guess what that means for the long-term, he told Runway Girl Network, when asked if onboard social distancing will continue after aviation gets back to business.

What I can say with certainty is that the flight experience as we know it will change and well be there creating what our passengers need every step of the way helping our customers help their customers.

A growing number of airlines are blocking seats and spacing passengers apart to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Consumer advocacy group Flyers Rights is calling for IATA and ICAO to publish best practices for facilitating onboard physical distancing, arming flight attendants with M-95 masks and ensuring all passengers don masks, among other proposed measures.

Now a unit of Raytheon Technologies, Collins Aerospace is a premier provider of aircraft interiors, including economy and premium seats, lavatories, and systems for waste, oxygen and potable water. As such, the company is well positioned to aid in the aviation industrys recovery. Indeed, this is a key topic of discussion not only within the Interiors business but across the entire organization, says Brunk.

However, new products and solutions take time to develop and get certified. Were certainly looking at those future concepts but right now our first priority is to help the airlines make the changes they need to keep passengers safe in a financially strained environment. For example, helping them explore seat configuration changes with existing equipment, and new measures to deal with social distancing requirements.

In recent weeks, aircraft interiors stakeholders have tabled a number of intriguing ideas to support social distancing on board. Italian firm Aviointeriors is proposing forwards-backwards seating with a wraparound shell layout that includes a head-level transparent thermoplastic screen. HAECO, which in 2019 dbuted its Eclipse staggered-angled hybrid seat, suggests that Eclipse offers unmatched privacy, safety and social distance as onboard social distancing is adopted by airlines.

Noting that the future of aircraft interiors will require more means of providing passengers with piece of mind that their journey will be comfortable, safe and sanitized, thermoplastics specialist SIMONA Boltaron suggests that new cabin concepts, as well as retrofitted aircraft seats, will feature privacy and safety dividers that separate passengers and can be cleaned frequently. Boltaron is pushing forward its Boltaron 4350 translucent and transparent materials, which meet crucial flammability requirements and can be thermoformed to provide a safety barrier without sacrificing regulatory compliance or aesthetics.

For its part, Collins Aerospace has done a lot of research in this area with its innovations throughout the cabin, from nose to tail. Looking at innovations to reduce interaction through touch, innovations for surfaces we have to touch and innovations that positively impact the environment inside an aircraft are all areas our engineering organizations are exploring, Brunk tells RGN.

In terms of whether Collins Aerospace has any IP that might prove useful in a post-pandemic world that perhaps didnt suit the market before, Brunk says: We are always looking into future technologies, the associated IP and the market timing. I dont necessarily think that suitability has changed, I think about it more from a market timing standpoint. I am convinced that the post COVID-19 environment is more likely to accelerate market entry points for many of these innovations.

Meanwhile, Collins Aerospace and more broadly, Raytheon Technologies is still helping to fight the spread of COVID-19. From an Interiors perspective, our team has been actively involved in producing 3D print headbands for face shields. This is part of a larger Raytheon Technologies effort to produce nearly 2,500 headbands a week, says Brunk.

Im particularly proud that these are being produced at some of our Interiors sites including Bohemia, NY, Everett, WA, Colorado Springs, CO, Nogales, Mexico, Savannah, GA, New Berlin, WI, Phoenix, AZ, Peshtigo, WI and Kilkeel, Northern Ireland which has also been producing hospital scrub kits for medical workers. Its been extremely gratifying to see the great work that our team is doing.

He says the team has also been been witnessing many individual stories of employees volunteering their time and effort throughout the entire organization.

Collins Aerospace is also working closely in an advisory capacity with our airline customers as they transition passenger aircraft to all-cargo flight missions. There are however, other parts of the Collins organization that are involved as well, including our Information Management Services group which is helping with humanitarian flights and waiving fees for those efforts, notes Brunk, who recently succeeded Dave Nieuwsma as president, Interiors, reporting to Collins Aerospace president Stephen Timm.

As an essential business, has Collins Aerospace scaled down any of its interiors production operations?

As you know, the commercial aerospace industry has been hit hard by COVID-19 and we arent immune to that, responds the Collins Aerospace executive. We are currently working closely with our airlines and OEMs to adjust to this new reality. I cant get into specifics at this time, but I would expect that well hear more about the impact in the May 7th earnings update from Raytheon Technologies.

Private equity firm Artemis has successfully completed the divestment of its portfolio company Adcole Maryland Aerospace (AMA).

The company has been sold to aviation industry private investment firm AE Industrial Partners (AEI).

Financial details of the deal have not been disclosed.

Based in Marlborough, Massachusetts, US, AMA specialises in designing and producing mission-critical optical sensors such as sun sensors, star trackers and star cameras for satellites.

It serves the US Department of Defense, other government agencies, and major aerospace and defence companies.

The companys satellite components have played a key role in various space missions, including Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Pluto voyages.

Artemis founder and managing partner Peter Hunter said: Were very proud of what we have accomplished in partnership with the talented AMA team.

As a result of the companys industry recognised commitment to innovation and quality, AMA is uniquely well-positioned to meet the growing demand for high reliability, mission-critical satellite components and subsystems.

April 28, 2020 (Hollywood, MD) Platform Aerospace was selected as an awardee on the Kits, Recovery, Augmentation, Components and Engines (KRACEn) Multiple Award Contract (MAC) supporting the United States Navy.

Commander, Fleet Readiness Center (COMFRC) awarded a 10-year, $6.1 billion, enterprise contract vehicleto 42 small business industry partners on April 14, enabling U.S. Navy, government customers and international partners to procure aircraft maintenance services and sustainment support quicker.

The Kits, Recovery, Augmentation, Components and Enginescommonly called KRACEnis an indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) MAC that will provide maintenance services and support for single satellite sites, small aircraft quantities, personnel to augment government maintenance teams, and overhaul capabilities for aircraft components and subsystems. This is COMFRCs first, multi-billion contract award.

The MACs scope of work, which is set aside for small-businesses, includes modification kit build and installations, recovery of downed aircraft, repair and overhaul of aircraft and components, repair and overhaul of engines, and augmentation labor supplement for maintenance both ashore and afloat.

As one of 42 small business industry partners, Platform Aerospace will help enable COMFRC to effectively use the KRACEn enterprise contract vehicle allowing the Navy meet its sustainment needs expeditiously while delivering improved outcomes, COMFRC Executive Director Roy Harris said.

KRACEn is a crucial addition to our traditional organic capabilities, providing us with the means to tap into the expertise of small business industry partners.

The nature of the work covered by KRACEnsimple platform, organizational-level Contractor Logistic Services (CLS) requirements involving few aircraft, elemental or off-aircraft tasksis well-suited for small businesses, according to COMFRC Acquisition Group, CLS Division Lead Chris Giggey. The CLS Division, formally known as the Fast Acquisition Solutions to Enable Readiness (FASTER) team, was charted by Commander, Naval Air Systems Command in 2018 to improve acquisition speed and quality of services by developing expertise in CLS contracting.

Sandvik achieves AS9100D aerospace certification for titanium and nickel-based superalloy powders – Powder Metallurgy Review magazine

Sandvik Additive Manufacturing, a division of Sandvik AB, headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, reports that its new powder plant for titanium and nickel-based superalloys has received AS9100 Revision D certification for deliveries to the aerospace industry. The company believes that this will accelerate the adoption of additively manufactured titanium parts, as well as a shift towards sustainable manufacturing.

The powder plant for Osprey titanium and nickel-based superalloys was officially opened at the end of 2019 in Sandviken, Sweden. Since then, Sandvik explains that extensive work has been ongoing to ramp-up the highly automated plant, finetuning all processes and qualifying the powder to ensure the best possible consistency, morphology and quality suitable for Additive Manufacturing. The first two titanium powders produced at the plant are Osprey Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 and Osprey Ti-6Al-4V Grade 23. The nickel-based superalloys are Osprey Alloy 625 and Osprey Alloy 718.

Having atomised fine metal powders for more than forty years, and supplying titanium to the the aerospace industry since the 1980s, Sandvik is no stranger to powder atomisation or the requirements of the most demanding industries, stated Keith Murray, Vice President of Global Sales, Sandvik Additive Manufacturing.

Now we are one of few companies that has the new and prestigious AS 9100D quality certification for our Osprey titanium powder and nickel-based superalloys used for Additive Manufacturing. It is a true milestone, which will facilitate many customer collaborations going forward. Imagine what 158 years of leading materials expertise can do for your additive process.

According to Sanvik, its titanium powders for Additive Manufacturing supports the shift towards sustainable manufacturing, as the AM process results in far less material waste than traditional subtractive techniques, while also encouraging new levels of design freedom. The company states that this is opening up the use of titanium in other industries such as automotive and tooling and that Sandviks own Lightweight CoroMill 390 is excellent proof of this as the additively manufactured version of the mill is said to be more than 80% lighter and up to 200% more productive.

Sandvik further states that Powder Metallurgy is also labeled as a recognised green technology and the net-shape capability of technologies like Additive Manufacturing not only means that material waste is minimised, but also that great energy efficiency can be achieved, by eliminating manufacturing steps.

Murray added, If combining this with a light and strong material like titanium, the sustainability advantages can be enormous. Weight reduction is for example a constant key issue for the aerospace industry, driven both by fuel cost and carbon footprint. The same is true for cars and trucks, and everything else that moves. Each kilogram of weight loss on an airplane saves about 3,000 US dollars per year in fuel and can make a great difference for the planet.

In addition to a shift towards sustainable manufacturing, Sanvik explains that traceability is of vital importance in the aerospace industry, the company can offer an incomparable level of traceability for its titanium powder, which is made possible by having the full supply chain inhouse from titanium sponge to finished powder.

The new titanium powder process uses advanced electrode inert gas atomisation technology to produce highly consistent and repeatable titanium powder with low oxygen and nitrogen levels. The automated production process is also supported by several industrial robots and a dedicated downstream sieving, blending and packing facility. The new powder plant is located next to Sandviks Additive Manufacturing facility, which includes all relevant AM processes for metals. This company says that this means it can tailor the powder to different AM processes, on the same site.

Chennai startup Garuda Aerospace to combat COVID-19 by using drones to disinfect 26 cities – YourStory

Before the coronavirus outbreak, drone startups in India had one main concern - regulatory grey areas. Often seen as a security threat, drones were initially used only in the armed forces.But gradually, they percolated into the domain of civilian activity, and were used for industrial applications, imagery, and surveillance.

But drone startups have now managed to capture the limelightin combating coronavirus by playing a key role in disinfecting places across the country.

Chennai-based Garuda Aerospace is one among them. Founded in 2016 by Agnishwar Jayaprakash, the startup, which has built several agricultural drones, is now helping the government in drone-based sanitisation projects.

An ISO 9001 firm, the startup was selected by the United Nations as one of the top 10 socio economic innovations of 2016.

At present, Garuda Aerospace has a manufacturing facility incubated at Agni College of Technology, Chennai. According to the founder, the college ground has become an ideal testing location for all its prototypes.

For the past few weeks, the startup has been using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to disinfect around 3.28 million sq km area across India to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Named as the Corona killer (CK), these automated UAVs aid in the sanitisation of crowded locations such as markets, metro stations, airports, schools, colleges, hospitals, and government offices, which otherwise would have been an impossible task for public workers to undertake a manual spraying process.

Using drones is more advantageous due to the accessibility, which enables them to reach heights of up to 450 feet and spray disinfectants on buildings, which is impossible to be done manually.

The CK 100 sanitisation drone consists of patented autopilot technology, advanced flight controller system, and is equipped with fuel efficient motors that enables the drone to be deployed for 12 hours a day. It has a payload capacity of 15-20 litres, flight duration of 40-45 minutes, and maximum ceiling height of 450 feet, which is sufficient to disinfect 99 percent of tall buildings across India. Each drone can cover 20 km a day.

The startup said it sources raw materials from the US, Spain, Germany, Taiwan, and Japan.

A Harvard Business School alumnus, Agnishwar got the idea of starting Garuda Aerospace when he was representing India at an international swimming competition. He saw how underwater cameras were extensively used in foreign countries to help swimmers alter their techniques.

I had the vision of using drones to help me get better in swimming. I developed a drone with the help of my engineering friends, and it worked wonders for my training. Later, after retiring from the sport, I founded Ignite India, which was focussed on building innovations for social and economic change, and it became the largest innovation ecosystem in the country, and was established in 7,500 schools in collaboration with the United Nations, says Agnishwar.

We had a lot of amazing ideas, and so we wanted kids to pitch in a TV show format, he adds. It was then that he produced a TV show called 7th Sense, which was loosely based on Shark Tank, but it was for children. The best performers were rewarded with chocolate showers, gifts, etc., and drones were used to shower children with gifts.

I realised the use case of drones could be vast and wide, and decided to start Garuda Aerospace, says Agnishwar.

Agnishwar adds that every drone varies in its manufacturing and set up costs. The startup made an initial investment of Rs 1 crore in 2016 to set up the basic facility, which had the capacity to start the assembly line.

Drones used for small event coverage can cost around Rs 50,000, and can go up to Rs 5 crore for those used in the military, armed forces, etc.

The startup has so far received work orders from Smart City Municipal Corporations of Varanasi, Raipur, Bhopal, and Municipal Corporation in Chandigarh; and from Jaggayyapeta, Kurnool, in Andhra Pradesh. Apart from this, it is currently servicing eight states and 26 cities. Many private companies have also signed three-year contracts for conducting sanitisation operations using drones at Rs 30,000 per day.

Additionally, Garuda Aerospace has worked for the Tamil Nadu Electricity Department and the TN Health department to commence sanitisation operations. The startup has also worked during severe emergencies such as Chennai floods in 2015, Cyclone Vardha in 2016, and during Kerala floods.

The team consists of 45 full-time employees, and 500 contract pilots established in 26 cities across India.

Apart from Garuda Aerospace, some of the other startups helping to fight the COVID-19 crisis is Mumbai-based ideaForge, which is monitoring social distancing, and there is Telangana-based Marut.

A group of researchers at IIT-Guwahati have also developed a drone for disinfection of larger areas, while another group has come up with a drone equipped with an infrared camera, which can help in the thermal screening of groups without human intervention, and to identify suspected COVID-19 cases at an early stage once the lockdown is lifted.

The startup has secured Rs 3.5 crore in funding over the past four years, and has a pan India presence.

Agnishwar says that over the years, Garuda Aerospace has been manufacturing indigenous drones in India, and is being guided by retired IAS, IPS, Army, and RAW officers, while also being advised financially by several corporate honchos from companies like Boeing, KPMG, Trans Advisory, CBRE, etc.

Garuda Aerospace can easily scale from a national market leader to a global market player in the next few years, says Agnishwar.

We also propose a drone-based Swachh Bharat campaign to clean India on a regular basis to prevent the spread of COVID-19, while also being prepared for future pandemics and communicable diseases, he adds.

Boeing’s big week includes first-quarter results and government aid deadline – CNBC

A slew of upcomingBoeing announcements aim to calm investor nerves and set the stage for future growth much like when Dave Calhoun was named as the aerospace giant's next CEO.

In the next week, Boeing will hold its annual meeting, report first-quarter results and face the application deadline for a multi-billion dollar aid package from the federal government.

Those familiar with the discussions of Boeing's leadership said Calhoun is planning to show investors the company will build two financial bridges to the future: A near-term one focused on cutting near-term losses brought on by the coronavirus and a longer-term bridge to deal with fewer orders for commercial airplanes and a smaller airline industry.

The question for investors is how much it will cost Boeing to build those bridges and where will the money come from. The growing uncertainty over possible losses in the first quarter and beyond is a principal reason shares of Boeing are down more than 50% since Calhoun became CEO in January.

Calhoun has made it clear he and his leadership team are preparing the company for a future that will look far different than two years ago, when commercial airplanes orders were soaring and production rates climbed to record highs.

In a message sent to Boeing employees in early April, Calhoun wrote, "We will need to balance the supply and demand accordingly as the industry goes through the recovery process for years to come."

That means production cuts in the commercial airplane division. Boeing executives tell CNBC the company is expected to outline new targets for wide-body plane production, including a new, lower monthly build rate for the 787 Dreamliner.

Given slower production schedules in the future, Boeing will also likely announce plans to trim its payroll, according to those familiar the company's plans. The payroll cut could be as much as 10% of the company's 160,000 employees, with some of the reduction expected to come through early retirement packages and natural attrition. Still, given the size of the expected payroll cut, Boeing could also layoff many employees.

Wall Street knows Boeing has to restructure, and for the most part, that expectation is now built into shares of the Dow component. What remains unclear is exactly how much it will cost the company to right size its commercial airplane business. More importantly, it is also unclear how Boeing will build up the liquidity needed to get through a second and third quarter with limited revenue.

After lobbying Washington to earmark as much as $60 billion in government aid for the aerospace industry, Boeing has yet to say if it will apply for some of that money. That will likely change this week since the Treasury Department has setMay 1 as the deadline for companies to apply for some of the billions set aside for "businesses critical to maintaining national security." While the application does not specifically list the companies it is designed to help, this is the Treasury program designed to provide billions to Boeing.

The question is what terms the Treasury secretary will set for lending that money and whether Boeing will be willing to accept them or decide to seek billions in the private sector. Earlier this month, the Treasury Department received stock warrants worth tens of millions of dollars from airlines that borrowed from the federal government.

In late March, Calhoun indicated Boeing may pass on government loans if it requires giving the Treasury Department a stake in the company. Since then, Boeing executives have told CNBC that Calhoun's comments have been misinterpreted as a definitive line drawn in the sand. Those executives say the Boeing leadership team has not made any final decisions on government aid and the determining factor will be the terms that are ultimately negotiated with the Treasury Department.
