Hua Ho Holds Sports Fair to Promote Active and Healthy Lifestyle

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, 10-APR-14:

With an aim of promoting an active and healthy lifestyle among the people of Brunei Darussalam, Hua Ho is having a Sports Fair, which showcases sports products, at the Atrium of Hua Ho Department Store Manggis from the 7th to 30th of April 2014.

New arrival and special-priced footwear and apparel that are suitable for outdoor activities, and various indoor exercise equipment and accessories are available during the fair. The Sports Fair covers a wide range of popular brands which include Nike, Adidas, Puma, Yonex, Asics, Ashaway, Kettler, Polar Bottles and many others.

"We are trying our best to provide our customers with high quality sports products that fit their individual needs. Along with that, it is also our aim to make people comfortable while they are performing their routine exercises, and other fitness activities by providing them the products with unique features that are compatible with their personal preferences and distinct physique," said Mr. Lau, Manager of Hua Ho Manggis.

"Even after this event, we will continue to offer Brunei with high quality branded sports and active lifestyle products at our Sports Department," Lau added.

The venue of the Sports Fair offers the shoppers with enough space to closely experience the products before they decide to purchase them. Fitting rooms for apparel and benches where the shoppers can sit on to try the shoes are just around the area. The arrangement of display tables, boxes and offer bins are also carefully planned to give the shoppers an easy way to view the products and the information provided therein.

"I like how they set the venue for this fair compared from the previous similar promotions that they have held in this area. I often visit Hua Ho Manggis especially if they have promotions and I see this current set-up to be fresh and more comfortable," Ronan (not his real name), a 30-year old shopper commented.

What is a Healthy Lifestyle? – Healthy Lifestyles Living …

I and many others are promoting the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle, but what does that actually mean?

In general, most would agree that a healthy person doesnt smoke, is at a healthy weight, eats a balanced healthy diet, thinks positively, feels relaxed, exercises regularly, has good relationships, and benefits from a good life balance.

Maybe I should start by trying to look at a few definitions for the word lifestyle. A definition in The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language says : A way of life or style of living that reflects the attitudes and values of a person or group.

In an Encyclopedia of Public Health: Lifestyle is defined as: In public health, lifestyle generally means a pattern of individual practices and personal behavioural choices that are related to elevated or reduced health risk.

The World Health Organisation in 1946 defined health as A complete state of mental, physical and social well-being not merely the absence of disease.

Wikipedia: defines a lifestyle as the way a person lives. This includes patterns of social relations, consumption, entertainment, and dress. A lifestyle typically also reflects an individuals attitudes, values or worldview. A healthy lifestyle is generally characterized as a balanced life in which one makes wise choices.

A final definition of lifestyle is: The aggregation of decisions by individuals which affect their health, and over which they more or less have control.

What is the definition of Healthy Living?

The World Health Organization (WHO), defines Health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not simply just the absence of disease.

The actual definition of Healthy Living is the steps, actions and strategies one puts in place to achieve optimum health.

Making healthy food choices, including controlling portion sizes and reading food labels, is an essential step in maintaining a proper body weight and preventing or managing diabetes. A heart-healthy diet includes foods that are low in fat, cholesterol, and sodium.

Individuals with prediabetes or diabetes have additional food considerations, especially limiting simple carbohydrates. Simple carbs are found in foods like table sugar, cake, soda, candy, and jellies, and consuming them causes an increase in blood glucose.

With so many food options, it can be difficult realize which ones are healthy. If you have prediabetes or diabetes, this chart will help you determine the best choices.

Fish at least twice per week, especially high in omega-3 fatty acid(such as: salmon, lake trout, mackerel, and herring)

Chicken or turkey (without the skin)

Lean beef (round, sirloin, chuck, and loin)

Fruits and Vegetables - deeply colored such as spinach, carrots, peaches and berries Vegetable oils and margarines(soft/tub or liquid)

Fat-free, 1-percent fat, and low-fat dairy products

Unsalted nuts, seeds, and legumes

Fatty meats (such as: fatty beef and pork)

Mentoring a healthy lifestyle

In this day and age, we parents need to be positive mentors to our children to promote a healthy lifestyle.

What does being a mentor mean? It means someone who imparts wisdom to and shares knowledge with the less experienced. Who better to mentor children than their parents? After all, we are the ones who would lay down our lives for them at a moment's notice.

We will do almost anything to ensure their safety and comfort in life. We spend a large share of our lives grooming them to be responsible adults. We live by sound moral ethics and promote healthy living so that they will do the same when they are adults. We encourage giving back to the community and helping our fellow neighbors whenever possible.

In my childhood, parental mentoring had its challenges. There were seven children in my family, four boys and three girls. My twin sister and I were the youngest. My dad left my mom and our family when my sister and I were 11 months old. He took the keys to the car, and I've never seen him to this day. My brother, Todd, was two days less than a year older than us, so Mom had three babies in diapers, no job, and no support system. Those were rough times for us, but Mom kept us all together. I never remember Mom sitting down when we were little. She mentored a very strong work ethic!

I did not have my birth dad as a mentor, but I had many other positive role models during those formative years. One was Mrs. Hupp. She was an older woman who had lost her husband and visited the coast to stay at her cabin in the summer months. I would spend weeks with her during the summer. Her cabin had no running water, and we baked many pies on her wood-fueled oven. I remember the deer in the backyard and the raccoons we fed and watched with a spotlight that shone brightly over the tree trunk that we placed the scraps on. Those were some wonderful times! I still miss Mrs. Hupp and how she mentored me to appreciate the simple things in life.

Then when I was in high school, my counselor, Steve Jurist, helped me find a way to realize my dream of going to college. I was the first to get a college degree in my family, and was able to change my life and lift myself from the poverty that my biological father had left us in so many years before.

Never miss an opportunity to help and mentor others. Show your children that you care by spending time with them. Whether you teach them to knit, bake a pie, or ride a horse, you will impact their lives. You may not realize it today, but the result will be the same. Their lives will be improved because you took the time to share a little of yourself with them while mentoring a healthy lifestyle.

I love to see mother and daughters in our store learning to knit together. It is fun to see them mentoring patience, perseverance and just sharing stories about life, while they craft a hand-knit item together.
