Prince Harry feels US is his spiritual home as he gears up to welcome baby girl – The News International

Prince Harry is preparing for the imminent arrival of his daughter in California abode

Prince Harry has renewed energy and positivity as he has settled perfectly in his California abode.

The Duke of Sussex is not letting old grudges hold him back as he prepares to welcome baby girl.

Journalist, author and mental health advocate Bryony Gordon, who once interviewed Prince Harry, recently spoke to Daily Telegraph about what living in the US means to him.

She said: "The anger of the past has gone, and it has been replaced with a sense of purpose. California is not just Harrys physical home for now it is also his spiritual one, where nobody thinks anything of openly discussing their struggles.

"And the Prince Harry we cant see is perhaps the one we dont want to the one who is getting on just fine, happily following his own path outside the conventions we are used to seeing him in. Hiking. Taking the dogs to the beach, she further explained.

"Preparing for the imminent arrival of his daughter. Speaking his truth in the hope of helping those who are unable to, and not caring how cheesy anyone might think that sounds," Gordon went on to add.

Voices of Faith: Re-imagining the covenant as we mark Shavuot – Record-Courier

By Rabbi Michael Ross| Record-Courier

The Jewish holiday of Shavuot begins at sundown on Sunday and concludes two days later, on Tuesday, at dusk.

Shavuot is not a well-known, or deeply celebrated holiday compared to Passover, Chanukkah, and Yom Kippur. Seven weeks after the Passover seder, Jews mark the spring harvest festival with cheesecake and dairy feasts. Because this holiday is rooted in the experience of Mount Sinai and the desire to maintain our obligations through education, this holiday has been a time when many synagogues hold their confirmation ceremonies and graduation ceremonies in honor of student learning.

At Passover, Jews try and relive the myth of leaving slavery in Egypt and entering freedom. Seven weeks later, we enter the other complimentary, bookend myth, of arriving at Mount Sinai and experiencing revelation. At Shavuot, we are wondering about the terms of the covenant, and how we can fulfill this covenantal relationship in contemporary times.

Traditionally, this was understood as observing the 613 commandments, or mitzvot. I want to offer us a new take at the covenant to try and make it relevant today.

About a decade ago, I realized that few Jews in my generation felt obligated to perform the commandments. Unlike my parents generation, which still feels a sense of obligation, my generation needed to find direct ways to connect to the sense of obligation to spiritual living and spiritual community.

I call this re-imaging of the covenant, the Four Embraces. They are four categories of spiritual life that can encourage us to become our best selves.

Practice embracing holiness in your spiritual self-care. What brings you a sense of groundedness, and centeredness in your life today? Whether its prayer, meditation, yoga, running, gardening, How can I cultivate a deeper, nourishing practice that will replenish my body and my soul?

Experience: During the pandemic, I rediscovered bike riding, and embraced this practice on a frequent basis this spring. When I am alone on my bike I notice a deep sense of gratitude and presence in my life.

Practice embracing holiness in your relationships. When do you notice holiness in your relationships? How can you be radically present to your beloveds and friends? Can I spend more time actively listening to these folk and deepen each of my relationships?

Experience: I could be a better active listener. Its a spiritual challenge for me to set aside my own ideas and explore the perspective of the person I am encountering. When I do this work, I build trust in the relationship, and I become more attentive to how I can be a better listener.

Practice embracing holiness in your spiritual community. Pandemic life has upended many of our communal practices. How have we maintained a sense of community through these dark times? How will our spiritual communities change to adapt to this crisis?

Experience: Zoom prayer services and Zoom Torah study have been invaluable for us. When I am in my spiritual community, I notice that I dont only take care of my own needs, but I also try and function for the benefit of my communitys needs.

Practice embracing holiness in your lifelong learning. Many of us stop our formal learning after we graduate from college. Many spiritual seekers stop formal education when we affirm our spiritual path in a coming-of-age ceremony like a bar mitzvah. How many of us never learn about our spiritual wisdom traditions as adults? How can we bring our adult perspectives and mature thinking to our spiritual lives? How can we become curious about our wisdom traditions?

Experience: Pandemic living has asked us to think differently about our lives. I have spent much time expanding my knowledge about issues we are facing as a community: racial justice, climate change, and poverty.

What I love about these four categories is that it does not matter if one is more observant or less observant. Each individual can find their own path, based on their own life experiences to this work.

This Shavuot, as we recommit to our covenantal relationship to divinity, may we find ways to embrace these four spiritual practices to bring balance, holiness, community and justice to our lives.

MENTAL HEALTH WEEK: It’s Important To Remain Mentally Healthy And Spirituality Can Help – South Asian Link

By Dr. Kala Singh

May 3 9 is Mental Health Week and its important to remain mentally healthy. I am giving spiritual counseling, in which emphasis is given how to manage some mental illnesses and remain mentally healthy through spirituality. I will discuss some of these concepts in this article.

The modern life style gives a lot of stress, mental tension and mental illnesses. Stress do not cause mental illness in itself, but can trigger it in people who are predisposed. With so much of mental tension in our daily life, it is necessary that we all know the symptoms, causes, types and available treatment for mental illnesses. Because of lack of knowledge, it becomes difficult for people to recognize the symptoms of mental illness. Having proper knowledge helps in the treatment of the patient. Mental illnesses are so common these days that every one must know their symptoms, so that as soon as these are seen in some one, family doctor is contacted and the illness is diagnosed and treated in its early stage. It is always easy to treat the illness in its early stages than in chronic. Mental illnesses cause physical illnesses and vice versa. The important thing is that every one must have the proper and correct knowledge. Because of lack of information, there are a lot of misgivings about mental illnesses like, jadoo, toona, evil spirit, evil eye, black magic, ghosts, bhoot, prt and curses. I have seen that when some one gets sick everyone starts giving suggestions. Though these suggestions are meant for the betterment of the patient, most of the times they strengthen their belief in these misgivings. There are many people who claim they can find solutions to these problems through supernatural powers. The truth is that there is no remedy for these problems except through proper medication.

Because of the ignorance about mental illnesses, if a member of the family gets mental illness, we consider it to be a disgrace to the family. It becomes difficult to arrange marriage in the family. So we try to hide the disease. We quietly take the patient to deras of sadhs, traditional healers or astrologers for the treatment and waste valuable time and hard earned money on useless rituals. By the time patient is taken to the doctor, disease is in its chronic stage. Now we have scientific proof that like physical illnesses, mental illnesses can also be treated with proper medication.

Just like physical illnesses there are many types of mental illnesses like worry, anxiety, sadness, depression and delusions. We all know a lot about physical illnesses and how to remain physically healthy, but the knowledge about mental illnesses and how to remain mentally healthy is lacking. To keep ourselves physically healthy we take care of our diet, take regular exercises, do regular blood tests for sugar, cholesterol etc. In the same way we ought to take care of our mental health. Because of the lack of knowledge, many people are becoming mentally sick. To keep ourselves mentally healthy we ought to take care of the following:

Pride, Haumai, is the term the Gurus use to account for the flaw in human personality. Ego is the interpretation of the word.

The Guru says that Haumai is a serious disease.

The source of evil is not Satan, but our ego. Ego is one of the main mental health problems. Acceptance of humility and rejection of pride, ego, haumai is the main principle of Sikhism.

Maya is the term used for the temporal world and human attachment to it, called worldly attachment. Sikhs believe that maya is the universe created by God for human beings to enjoy and is real, but too much of attachment to maya is not good. Humans can make choices and because of that choice, if one falls victim to maya, one cannot blame God. Maya is one of the five evils of Sikhism, including Kam, Krodh, Lobh, Moh and Ahnkar, i.e. Lust, Anger, Greediness, Attachment and Pride. The Guru says:

Sexual desire and anger waste the body away. (Guru Granth Sahib 932).

All of these evils are acceptable and good for health when under control, but unacceptable when out of control and are bad for health. For example, love turns to lust and affection to possessiveness. The Gurus advises everything in moderation.

The Guru says:

The more he tastes, the more he is diseased, without the Guru there is no peace and poise. (Guru Granth Sahib 1255)

The Gurus stopped Sikhs from using intoxicants. The Guru says:

Drinking it, he forgets his Lord and Master, he is punished in the Court of the Lord.

Do not drink the falls wine at all, if it is in your power.

O Nanak, the True Guru comes and meets the mortals, by His Grace, one obtains the True Wine.

He shall dwell forever in the Love of the Lord Master, and obtain a seat in the Mansion of His Presence. (Guru Granth Sahib 554).

All these concepts are necessary for perfect mental health. The Guru says that one should live in the world of Maya like lotus flower in a pond. Lotus lives and takes its nutrition from the pond, but does not get wet and dirty from the pond and lives above the wetness and dirtiness of the pond.

Between the lines: Do we have the spiritual grit our beliefs require? – The West Volusia Beacon

This coming Sunday, May 16, is the birthday of the Christian Church.

The term Christian Church refers not to a denomination or an organization, but to the body of believers in the person and work of one Jesus Christ, of Nazareth.

Some who mark Pentecost will not observe it until the following Sunday, May 23, because of differences in calculating when the day should be set.

Almost 2,000 years ago, a tiny band of believers in Jerusalem grew into a spiritual force of more than 3,000 on Pentecost. That number would grow exponentially.

From that day forward, believers spread the word of what they had seen and experienced, and the world was forever changed.

The first Christians message was met with opposition from many, notably those who wanted the status quo establishment, both religiously and politically, and who felt threatened by a message calling upon people to love one another and forgive past wrongs.

Despite threats of imprisonment, beatings, torture, confiscation of goods and death sometimes in the most heinous ways, such as being thrown to lions or being burned alive the message continued to advance, the new faith gained more followers. The gates of hell could not prevail.

The suffering of people who call themselves Christians continues today. The world has not changed in that regard.

In many countries, Christians are under assault and giving their last full measure of devotion on this Earth for what they believe in the realm unseen.

One example and there are many may suffice:

In Myanmar, the military government persecutes viciously ethnic-minority Christians. Chin Christians have been driven from their homes and villages, reports Barnabas Aid, a charity that provides relief to believers in need.

The army has even used artillery against some villages where Christians live. In March 2020, the government used a fighter jet to strafe villages, killing at least 28 people and causing fires that destroyed homes.

Chances are, you never heard about it. In spite of their suffering, including trying to survive in overcrowded displaced-person camps, the Burmese Christians are remaining true to their faith.

Could what is happening in Myanmar, and what happened in the Roman Empire, happen here?

U.S. News & World Report recently noted that only 47 percent of the United States population maintains membership and attendance in a house of worship. The nation is becoming more secular, as the spiritual sphere diminishes.

Interestingly, the late Billy Graham warned as far back as 1957 that the day may come when Christians in America would be called upon to suffer for their faith.

Since we have experienced little religious persecution in this country, it is likely that under pressure many would deny Christ, Graham wrote. Those who shout the loudest about their faith may surrender soonest. Many who boast of being courageous would be cowardly. Many who say, Though all others deny Christ, yet I will never deny Him, would be the first to warm their hands at the campfires of the enemy.

If you are a believer, what about you? If our government turned against us, would we defect from that spiritual kingdom we claim as ours?

Too many American Christians want their faith to be comfortable, something that does not require effort and, if need be, the sacrifice of their lives here and now for a greater Cause that transcends the ages.

At this season of Pentecost, at this juncture in the history of our nation and the world, do we you and I have the spiritual grit to remain true to what we say we believe?

Happy Pentecost (Shavuot)!

Meghan Markle is Diana’s ‘spiritual heir’ and ‘Age of Meghan’ will last for years – Daily Express

Royal expert Daniela Elser said "events are still nearly being exclusively interpreted through the lens of Meghan" despite more than a year passing since she quit royal duties with Prince Harry. Ms Elser added that the Duchess of Sussex has a "total and utter psychic dominance over the house of Windsor" along with a "vice-like grip on the public imagination".

Writing in news.com.au, the royal commentator said: "Buckingham Palace might be desperately intent on turning the page from the Sussexes but turns out, they are not even holding the book.

"Love or her loathe her, what no one seems to be when it comes to the lightning rod Duchess is indifferent.

"The strength of emotion she generates is such that the Age of Meghan is years, if not decades, away from coming to a close.

"The press and the public are still wholly in her inadvertent thrall. (Yes, I do have a mirror, why do you ask?)

"This is not, in any way, a situation of her own making, in fact Id wager the pregnant mum-of-one would very much fancy a break from being the relentless focus of the worlds attention.

"But, sorry, I just dont see that happening.

"In this, the 39-year-old former Suits star has proven herself to be her mother-in-law Dianas true spiritual heir, a glamorous rule-breaker who still casts a very, very long designer shadow over the palace years (if not decades in the princess case) after her exit.

"Diana famously said during her 1995 Panorama interview that she wanted to be 'queen of peoples hearts'; Meghan, whether she wants to be or not, is queen of peoples heads and social media feeds and long may she reign over us."

They plunged the Royal Family into crisis with their Megxit decision.

Meghan and Harry announced bombshell plans to step back as senior royals in January 2020.

They had wanted a dual role, earning their own money while supporting the Queen.

But the plan was deemed unworkable amid fears they would be accused of cashing in from the monarchy.

The Sussexes officially ended royal duties in March 2020.

They plunged the Royal Family into a fresh crisis a year after Megxit with their Oprah Winfrey interview.

Meghan and Harry made a set of explosive claims about the royals in the tell-all interview, which aired in March.

Over 25% Of Tor Exit Relays Spied On Users’ Dark Web Activities – The Hacker News

An unknown threat actor managed to control more than 27% of the entire Tor network exit capacity in early February 2021, a new study on the dark web infrastructure revealed.

"The entity attacking Tor users is actively exploiting tor users since over a year and expanded the scale of their attacks to a new record level," an independent security researcher who goes by the name nusenu said in a write-up published on Sunday. "The average exit fraction this entity controlled was above 14% throughout the past 12 months."

It's the latest in a series of efforts undertaken to bring to light malicious Tor activity perpetrated by the actor since December 2019. The attacks, which are said to have begun in January 2020, were first documented and exposed by the same researcher in August 2020.

Tor is open-source software for enabling anonymous communication on the Internet. It obfuscates the source and destination of a web request by directing network traffic through a series of relays in order to mask a user's IP address and location and usage from surveillance or traffic analysis. While middle relays typically take care of receiving traffic on the network and passing it along, an exit relay is the final node that Tor traffic passes through before it reaches its destination.

Exit nodes on the Tor network have been subverted in the past to inject malware such as OnionDuke, but this is the first time a single unidentified actor has managed to control such a large fraction of Tor exit nodes.

The hacking entity maintained 380 malicious Tor exit relays at its peak in August 2020, before the Tor directory authorities intervened to cull the nodes from the network, following which the activity once again crested early this year, with the attacker attempting to add over 1,000 exit relays in the first week of May. All the malicious Tor exit relays detected during the second wave of the attacks have since been removed.

The main purpose of the attack, according to nusenu, is to carry out "person-in-the-middle" attacks on Tor users by manipulating traffic as it flows through its network of exit relays. Specifically, the attacker appears to perform what's called SSL stripping to downgrade traffic heading to Bitcoin mixer services from HTTPS to HTTP in an attempt to replace bitcoin addresses and redirect transactions to their wallets instead of the user-provided bitcoin address.

"If a user visited the HTTP version (i.e. the unencrypted, unauthenticated version) of one of these sites, they would prevent the site from redirecting the user to the HTTPS version (i.e. the encrypted, authenticated version) of the site," the maintainers of Tor Project explained last August. "If the user didn't notice that they hadn't ended up on the HTTPS version of the site (no lock icon in the browser) and proceeded to send or receive sensitive information, this information could be intercepted by the attacker."

To mitigate such attacks, the Tor Project outlined a number of recommendations, including urging website administrators to enable HTTPS by default and deploy .onion sites to avoid exit nodes, adding it's working on a "comprehensive fix" to disable plain HTTP in Tor Browser.

"The risk of being the target of malicious activity routed through Tor is unique to each organization," the U.S. Cybersecurity Security and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) said in an advisory in July 2020. "An organization should determine its individual risk by assessing the likelihood that a threat actor will target its systems or data and the probability of the threat actor's success given current mitigations and controls."

"Organizations should evaluate their mitigation decisions against threats to their organization from advanced persistent threats (APTs), moderately sophisticated attackers, and low-skilled individual hackers, all of whom have leveraged Tor to carry out reconnaissance and attacks in the past," the agency added.

Paedophile teenager tried to ‘cover his tracks’ but failed – Liverpool Echo

A teenage paedophile tried to "cover his tracks" after downloading child rape photos at his parents' home.

Jordan Mitchell, then 19, used specialist computer software in an attempt to keep his sick obsession a secret.

He also deleted the disturbing pictures of toddlers and infants being sexually abused after he had viewed them.

But he failed to hide his identity completely and when police raided his home they found 427 indecent images.

Liverpool Crown Court heard police received intelligence that an IP address traced to Mitchell's home was being used to download indecent images.

Derek Jones, prosecuting, said as a result officers raided Mitchell's family's address in Darmonds Green Avenue, Anfield on June 24 last year.

Mr Jones said: "He was in with his parents and the defendant indicated to the police that he knew why they were there."

Officers seized an iPhone and a desktop computer from his bedroom, with the majority of the illegal files being recovered from his mobile.

Mr Jones said: "The defendant was using what he now confirms in his interview was Tor browser to cover his tracks - a VPN.

"He was clearly accessing indecent images on websites, looking at the images and deleting them."

Tor browser software provides access to the 'Dark Web' and can also be used to hide online or other computer activity.

Mr Jones said no record of online searches he had made were present on the devices.

However, he said it could be seen that the then teenager had visited websites with names referring to "Lolita" and "jail bait".

He had 36 Category A - the most serious category showing child rape - 140 Category B and 251 Category C indecent images of children.

Mr Jones said the photos showed children "some as young as between two and four, five to six, six to seven".

The prosecutor said: "He was interviewed by the police and full admissions were made by him to downloading the images.

"He accepted that he used Tor browser to try and cover his tracks when he was looking at these websites."

Mr Jones said sentencing guidelines suggested a starting point of 12 months' custody, with a sentencing range of 26 weeks to three years in custody, for the Category A files.

Mitchell, now 20, who has no previous convictions, admitted four counts of possessing indecent images of children.

Jeremy Hawthorn, defending, said his client entered his guilty plea at the earliest opportunity before magistrates.

Liverpool's courts are some of the busiest in the UK, with a huge variety of cases being heard each week.

To get a behind the scenes look at how they work and the moments that don't make our stories, subscribe to our free weekly Echo Court Files newsletter, written by court reporters Neil Docking and Lauren Wise.

It's free, easy and takes no time at all.

He said Mitchell had "cooperated at all stages", from assisting police when he was arrested to attending a voluntary interview and court when summoned, then taking part in a probation interview by phone, which he said was "potentially the most difficult because you're talking to someone you don't know about something very embarrassing".

Mr Hawthorn said Mitchell had "limited work history" but hoped to become a car mechanic after two years' studying at college in Bootle.

The lawyer added: "He's also a reasonably experienced but self-taught guitar player."

Mr Hawthorn said a pre-sentence report "expressed reservations" about some of Mitchell's attitudes.

He said: "The court will hope whatever attitude problems Mr Mitchell has are ones that are capable of being challenged and rehabilitated."

Mr Hawthorn said the Probation Service recommended Mitchell take part in a Horizon sex offenders treatment programme and added that Mitchell had already "taken steps to use the internet a little bit less compulsively and to make himself more useful around the house, which his mother is doing up".

Judge Anil Murray said the young age of the children pictured was an aggravating feature of the case but in mitigation Mitchell was of previous good character, made admissions, tried to change his lifestyle and hadn't offended since.

He said: "The pre-sentence report says you're remorseful and you show victim empathy. It's thought you're a medium risk of committing further sexual offences but you're unlikely to cause serious sexual harm."

The judge said as he was considered to be "a prospect for rehabilitation" and had no history of failing to comply with court orders, he could suspend his eight-month prison sentence for two years.

He ordered Mitchell to carry out the Horizon programme and a 60-day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement.

Can you help us keep Merseyside covered?

Mitchell must also sign on the Sex Offenders Register and comply with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for 10 years.

Judge Murray reserved any breaches of the orders to himself and said if he saw Mitchell again, he would likely send him to jail.

Joy-Anna Duggar & Husband Austin Forsyth Break Silence On Brother Josh Duggar’s Child Pornography Arrest: The Accusations ‘Sadden Us To Our Core’…

Article continues below advertisement

As OK! reported, Josh was arrested on Thursday, April 29, and was detained without bail. During his arraignment hearing one day later, his attorney pleaded not guilty to two federal charges of receipt and possession of child pornography. He was released on Thursday, May 6, and is awaiting his July 6 trial. His pretrial is set for July 1.

On Saturday, May 8, Joy-Anna took to her Instagram Story, on behalf of her and Austin, to issue a statement regarding the troubling charges brought against her brother. While keeping their message vague, the couple said they are trying to process the recent controversy and condemned any form of child abuse.

"The recent accusations brought against Josh sadden us to our core," their statement read. "We have not wanted to be hasty in making any statements while trying to process the news ourselves. We are especially heartbroken by the reality that there are children in the world being harmed and exploited."

"We ask for prayer for all those involved," Joy-Anna and Austin concluded, "and it is our continued prayer that the truth comes to light."

Josh was released from Washington County Detention Center in Fayetteville, Ark., last week after his virtual detention hearing on Wednesday, May 5. At the time, Judge Christy Comstock granted his bail but refused to allow him to return in his family home, where his six minor children live. In the meantime, Josh's family friends, pastor LaCount Reber and Maria Reber, agreed to house him until his trial next month.

The 19 Kids and Counting star also cannot be around other children and will be monitored by a GPS. However, Josh will be allowed to visit his children as long as his wife, Anna who is pregnant with the couple's seventh child is present.

As OK! reported, Anna announced the couple's seventh bun in the oven days before Josh was arrested in connection to a May 2019 Homeland Security raid on his Arkansas car dealership as part of an "ongoing federal investigation."

During his detention hearing last week, Homeland Security Investigations special agent Gerald Faulkner alleged that Josh downloaded files depicting child sex abuse on May 14, 15 and 16 of 2019, which were allegedly flagged and traced back to his IP address on a computer from his car dealership.

Article continues below advertisement

During the raid and before Josh knew what the agents were investigating he allegedly asked: "What is this about? Has someone been downloading child pornography?" When asked about the content of children reportedly ages 5-10 allegedly found during the federal investigation, Josh responded: "I'd rather not answer that question," Faulkner claimed.

The investigators also uncovered a program, Covenant Eyes, that was installed onto his computer, which would alert his wife when objectionable content was being searched for. However, the site was apparently unable to detect Josh's internet usage after he installed a password-protected network on his computer, the agent said during the virtual hearing.

Josh reportedly admitted that he had a TOR browser on his computer, allowing him to access the dark web (which is used for child pornography, Faulkner explained). There was reportedly no evidence that it was him who downloaded the browser.

The 33-year-old faces up to 20 years behind bars and $250,000 in fines on each count if convicted.

Josh was previously under fire in 2015 when a 2006 police report was released, revealing he had been investigated as a teen for molesting five underage girls. His sistersJill, 29, andJessa, 28, reportedlystepped forward as two of the victims.

Matthew McConaugheys Travelogue Is The Ultimate Fathers Day Book – Forbes

Matthew McConaughey's new book, "Greenlights," follows his journey from a high school foreign ... [+] exchange student to a critically acclaimed actor.

It began with Ziploc bags. Inside each, the fragmented collection of journals, napkins, tape recordings and travel trinkets that Matthew McConaughey had been storing since he was a teenager came to light again. As the Academy Award-winning actor began to unpack them, he found himself transported once again to his pastto Texas, Australia, Malibu and the turbid waters of the Amazon.

This week, as Fathers Day approaches, I sat down with McConaughey to talk about those adventures, many of which are chronicled in his new book, Greenlights.

Joe Sills: Lets talk about Greenlights. I dont know if you set out to write a travel book, but to me this is a travel book.

Matthew McConaughey: Yep. Its a travel book.

Joe Sills: It is this compilation of incredible events throughout your life that you somehow had the foresight to write down and put on record. Did you know when you were writing these things down that they would become a book one day?

Matthew McConaughey: I didnt know that they would become a book, but I had a hunch that I would be prudentand it was worthwhileto keep writing them down, that one day I might be able to look at them and find common denominators of what I learned in life...what worked and what didnt.

I had a good discipline of writings things down, whether it was with a Sharpie on my arm or notes that I would take a picture of, or a napkin, a coaster, a recording on a cassette or writing in my journal. Over the years, my desk would get full and I would find time to put things in a Ziploc. Four or five years ago, I said, Lets go open up that treasure chest of all of those journals and see what youve got.

Joe Sills: In some cases, you crack that seal and youre back in your own head decades ago. What was that like?

Matthew McConaughey: It was sort of intimidating. I wasnt sure if I was going to enjoy what I saw. It was embarrassing sometimes. Sometimes, I would shake my head shamefully. But then, as I got into it, I started to notice that it was funnier than I thought. The stuff I thought I was going to be embarrassed about, I laughed at myself about.

Maybe I was able to laugh because I had learned that life lesson, or maybe some of the offenses I had committed I was still repeat offending. Some of the stuff I felt shameful about, I had forgiven myself for, or I realized it was time to.

Probably the coolest thing was seeing that the things I was writing about at 15the subjects I was interested inI am still interested in at 50. How does the world work? What is my relationship in it? What is an idiosyncrasy of someone I found funny?

I always wrote those things down so I would not forget then. When I looked back, I realized I actually remembered more than I forgot.

Joe Sills: One of the things that surprised me in this book is that you spent a long time living out of a van and traveling around America. This is after youve become a well-known person in society. Tell me what that was like.

Matthew McConaughey: I had lived in Hollywood for a little while. I was successful. I still needed to audition for some roles, but a lot of roles were blind offers to me for the success I already had. People knew what kind of work I would do, so I was getting some offers without having to audition.

Im at a time in my life where I am not really meeting any strangers. Everybody knows my name and has a preconceived notion of who I am. I didnt feel like I was seeing true and honest behavior.

I love to drive. Its my favorite place to think. Its my favorite place for ideas. I love to explore the country and I like to be able to change my backyard at a moments notice. It was me and my dog, and we just hit it.

That van was my front row seat. That was my acting class, spending time with myself and other strangers if I wanted to.

I wanted to create resistance for myself. You see it from the Africa trip to the Amazon trip to touring America in a van. The idea was, Go where nobody knows your name and see if you can hustle. See what you can get. I wanted to give myself those very basic, practical challenges like breaking down on the highway or having a flat tire and you dont have a AAA card and you dont have OnStar.

On the road is where I found those challenges. Plus, I got to see some of the great comedians of the world who didnt know they were comedians.

The things trailer park life people say...They are all transient anyways, so we were like sailers on the highways of America. The trailer park is like your port. You dock for a while, you dont have to say your name or show your ID.

I liked being a little undercover, but I also thought it was cool that if someone saw me in the trailer park maybe they thought they were on Mars for a second.

Joe Sills: What is a green light to you?

Matthew McConaughey: A green light is an affirmation. A green light says go. More, please. Yes. Double down. Continue on. Move forward. Lets go.

That is a literal version of a green light from a highway.

We all love green lights. We want our life to be green lights because we want to move forward and keep dancing. We want to evolve and say, I am not running into any resistance. But there has to be resistance to evolve. That resistance is yellow and red lights.

A yellow light is running into a problem that makes you stop and pause. A red light stops you in your tracks.

I found that, in some ways, I engineered green lights in my own life. I took sacrifices today that would give me more freedom in the future. That is where the title comes from.

Joe Sills: Can you give us an example?

Matthew McConaughey: Early on, how to be a good friend. When I was a good friend, I stepped outside of myself to do something for someone else when they needed it even though it was going to take up some of my time or I would rather be doing something else. I noticed that when I did that, those friends came back later in life when I needed them. I noticed they were out in the world on my behalf when I wasnt even around. They were paving ways of good fortune and good word on me going forward, which opened up more opportunities and gave me more freedom.

Sometimes, it was choosing little things like not to gossip on someone else when they werent there. Yeah, I might create a green light in that moment but as soon as I leave that person I was talking to is going to lose respect for me. Theyre going to realize if I talk noise on you when youre not around, I might do the same thing to them. Then, I lose a potential ally in this world.

Preparation. Like for a job interview, so you dont show up sweating and going, I am completely ill-prepared. Yeah, I might have had a good time and drinks with my friends on Friday. That was a green light in that moment, but now I am at a red light.

Joe Sills: Now you show up on set with a script thats all in Spanish.

Matthew McConaughey: Yeah. And its a monologue for me!

Joe Sills: There are so many funny stories in Greenlights, that made me laugh, but I want to talk to you about a red light. I want to talk to you about your dad. You are on set at Dazed and Confused and its your first big break. Then, hes gone. Is that a red light?

Matthew McConaughey: Major red light.

Joe Sills: What was it like to balance that professional high with the low of the moment?

Matthew McConaughey: So, Im five days into working on my first acting gig. I am as high as I can be, I mean personally as turned on as I have ever been in my life. I am 21, I feel like Im doing something I am good at and I have an innate ability to do. People are telling me Im good at it.

Im getting paid $320 a day and I am going, Wow. This is as much fun as I have ever had and I am getting paid for it!

Then, dad. Boom. He dies.

At that time, as much as it was personally a highlight of my life to be able to act, there was no question which had more importance. My father passing away was, Okay. Drop it. Im out of here. Im not asking permission. I gotta go home.

I really didnt think about the acting I had to do. It was pain and loss and confusion. I didnt think my dad could be killed. I thought he was the abominable snowman. I had never even considered him not being alive in this life. He was a bear of a man who had an immune system like a viking.

Yeah, he lived fully and lived hard, but he wasnt close to leaving this worldnot in my eyes. Then, all of a sudden he was gone. Out of the blue. Boom.

You know, death makes me so tired. Even to this day, I go to a hospital and get narcoleptic. So when dad died, I would pass out on the kitchen counter while we were talking about dad dying. My mom and brothers would still be talking, then I would wake up and pick up where they left off.

We had a wake, which he wanted. Friends came from all over the country for his wake. Im there. Im the 21-year-old youngest son, the idealist who held my father and what he taught me in such regard. That weekend, I started to learn that lesson you learn when you lose a parent. I learned that there was a difference between the message and the messenger.

Joe Sills: Eventually, you get back on set. Do you feel like youre acting for him then? Are you pushing forward for him now?

Matthew McConaughey: In a way. My heals were more firmly on the ground after dad died. I think they were pretty firmly there even while I was acting as Wooderson. But now, this is where the green light asset from a major red light like that comes in.

Now, the greatest thing that has ever happened to me in my life at that time this thing I love to do and I am getting paid for, that five days prior became the most important thing in my lifebecomes second place. The death of my father was more important.

What does that mean? It means the fact that something with so much import as this great opportunity I was living, acting, was number two? Id say I became a better actor that day.

This interview was edited for length and clarity.

For deep-diving elephant seals, it takes lots of work to stay fat – Reuters

For elephant seals - one of the most distinctive of the 33 species that comprise the world's seal family - it is hard work to stay fat.

Scientists have conducted the most thorough study to date of the unique feeding behavior of northern elephant seals, focusing on the females of the species during arduous two-month post-breeding migrations in the northeastern Pacific Ocean.

The seals were found to spend upwards of 20 hours every day - and sometimes a full 24 hours - in continuous deep-diving to feed on multitudes of small fish, rather than the larger prey favored by other deep-diving marine mammals, to gain the body fat essential for successful reproduction and insulation in the frigid depths. They fed 1,000 to 2,000 times daily.

"It is not easy to get fat," said marine biologist Taiki Adachi of the University of St Andrews in Scotland, who led the study published this week in the journal Science Advances.

The researchers tracked 48 female elephant seals from Ao Nuevo State Park in California, site of an important breeding colony, as they covered vast ocean distances. Their round-trip migration was up to around 3,700 miles (6,000 km).

They based their findings on data obtained from 2011 and 2018 using three small removable devices: one attached under the jaw that counted the number of times they fed and measured their depth; a satellite tracker attached atop the head that provided location information; and a "smart" video camera with an infra-red LED light flash, motion tracker and another depth sensor, also atop the head.

Elephant seals get their name from the prominent noses of the males that resemble an elephant's trunk. There are two species - the northern elephant seal and the slightly larger southern elephant seal. The two are the world's biggest seals and the largest marine mammals other than whales.

Male northern elephant seals may reach 13 feet long (4 meters) and weigh up to 4,500 pounds (2,000 kg). Females are substantially smaller, getting up to about 10 feet (3 meters) in length and 1,300 pounds (590 kg). The males feed only in coastal waters.

Some large marine mammals rely upon deep dives to forage for meals, with more food needed based on the animal's size. Sperm whales, perhaps the heavyweight champions of the deep dive, hunt for large prey like giant squid.

The female elephant seals, also large but not on the scale of a sperm whale, have devised a different solution - eating huge amounts of small fish. But it is laborious to catch enough small fish to meet the energy needs of such a large animal.

"They continuously dive, for long periods of time - 20 minutes on average and about 100 minutes at maximum - and deep - 500 meters (1,640 feet) on average and about 1,500 meters (4,920 feet) at maximum - with only a few minutes breathing at the surface," Adachi said.

"During the two-month migration, they never come back to the land. The sleeping hours in at-sea animals is not fully understood. But, based on our record of extreme foraging, their available time for sleeping should be less than 20% of the day," Adachi added.

The range of the northern elephant seal spans the Pacific coast of the United States, Canada and Mexico. They generally breed and give birth in California and Baja California, usually on offshore islands, from December to March, and fast during mating season, losing perhaps a third of their body weight.

CVS worker accused of stealing blank COVID-19 vaccination cards – KOKI FOX 23

On the same day that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that masks were not required if people are fully vaccinated, a worker at a New York CVS has been charged for taking vaccination cards from his work.

>> Read more trending news

Nassau County police said Zachary Honig, 21, took eight COVID-19 vaccination cards that had been filled in with vaccine information but no patient names, in addition to 54 blank vaccination cards. The documents were found in Honings car during a sweep of an alleged high-crime area by the departments Criminal Intelligence Rapid Response team, police told WNBC.

They were taken within the last couple of days, with the intent to share them with family members and friends, so that they could go into venues and possibly even use them at schools, Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder told WNBC.

Honig told police when he was arrested, I sell the cards to kids, so they can go to school, WCBS reported. But they dont believe he had sold any.

The man has been fired and CVS said it is working with police on the investigation, WNBC reported.

The cards have not been used as proof of documentation for New Yorks Excelsior Pass, the states vaccination passport, as it works with the card and a database.

The FBI says that it is illegal to have a fake vaccination record card.

Not only could you unknowingly spread the virus, you actually could be prosecuted since the cards have an official government seal and could be punishable under Title 18 of the United States Code, Section 1017 and any other laws that could apply.

If you know of someone using a fake vaccination record, youre being asked to report the person to the appropriate government agency or by calling Health and Human Services at 1-800-HHS Tips or by logging on to the Internet Crime Complaint Center.

Explainer: Why Is Gaza so Often in Middle of Conflict? – Voice of America

GAZA CITY, GAZA STRIP - The Gaza Strip was pounded this week by hundreds of Israeli strikes from sea, land and air, while the enclave's militant Hamas rulers fired hundreds of rockets into Israel.

It's the fourth round of major conflict between Israel and Hamas since 2008, with the tiny enclave's more than 2 million Palestinian residents bearing the brunt of the deaths and the destruction.

The latest eruption of violence has raised the specter of another devastating war and once again drawn international attention to the impoverished, densely populated strip.

Here's a look at the Gaza Strip and its place in the Middle East conflict.

A narrow coastal strip

Gaza, sandwiched between Israel and Egypt, is 40 kilometers (25 miles) long and 10 kilometers (6 miles) wide. It was part of the British-ruled Palestine Mandate before the 1948 war surrounding Israel's creation, when it came under Egypt's control.

Large numbers of Palestinians who fled or were driven from what is now Israel ended up in Gaza, and the refugees and their descendants now number 1.4 million, accounting for more than half of Gaza's population.

Israel captured Gaza, along with the West Bank and east Jerusalem, in the 1967 Mideast war. The Palestinians want all three territories to form their future state.

The first Palestinian intifada, or uprising, erupted in Gaza in 1987 the same year Hamas was founded and later spread to the other occupied territories. The Oslo peace process in the 1990s established the Palestinian Authority and gave it limited autonomy in Gaza and parts of the occupied West Bank.

The Hamas takeover

Israel withdrew its troops and Jewish settlements from Gaza in 2005, after a second and far more violent intifada.

The following year, Hamas won a landslide victory in Palestinian elections. That triggered a power struggle with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party, culminating in a week of clashes in 2007 that left Hamas in control of Gaza.

Hamas has done little in the way of imposing Islamic law on Gaza, which was already very conservative. But it has shown no tolerance for dissent, arresting political opponents and violently suppressing rare protests against its rule.

The militant group has remained firmly in power through three wars and a 14-year blockade.

The blockade

Israel and Egypt imposed the crippling blockade after the Hamas takeover. Israel says it's needed to keep Hamas and other militant groups from importing arms. Rights groups say the blockade is a form of collective punishment.

The closures, along with years of misrule and Hamas' long-running feud with the Palestinian Authority, have devastated Gaza's economy. Unemployment hovers at around 50%, power outages are frequent and the tap water is badly polluted.

Palestinians face heavy movement restrictions that make it difficult to travel abroad for work, study or to visit family, and often refer to Gaza as the world's largest open-air prison.

The wars

Hamas and Israel have fought three wars and several smaller battles. The worst so far was the 2014 war, which lasted for 50 days and killed about 2,200 Palestinians, more than half of them civilians. Seventy-three people were killed on the Israeli side.

Israel's airstrikes and incursions into Gaza have left vast swaths of destruction, with entire neighborhoods reduced to rubble and thousands forced to shelter in U.N. schools and other facilities. Israel says it makes every effort to avoid civilian casualties and accuses Hamas of using Gazans as human shields.

Palestinian militants have fired thousands of rockets into Israel. The vast majority are intercepted by Israeli missile defenses or land in open areas, but they sow widespread fear and can bring life to a standstill. Their range has steadily increased in recent years, with some striking as far as Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, major metropolitan areas.

Earlier this year, the International Criminal Court launched an investigation into possible war crimes in the Palestinian territories. It is expected to scrutinize the actions of both Israel and Palestinian militants in the 2014 war.

The ICC has also expressed concern about the latest violence.

Ex-East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton and aide get probation for torpedoing covert public corruption probe – cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A federal judge on Thursday sentenced former East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton and his former assistant to one year of probation for torpedoing a covert federal bribery investigation into other public officials.

Norton, who pleaded guilty to obstructing justice, told his assistant Vanessa Veals about the ongoing investigation after federal authorities interviewed him in September 2018 and warned him not to tell anyone about it. Veals, in turn, told others about the investigation, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Chelsea Rice said in court Thursday that the government terminated its investigation as a result.

It impeded the governments ability to do what it needed to do to investigate public corruption, Assistant U.S. Attorney Chelsea Rice said during Nortons sentencing hearing on Thursday.

Norton told U.S. District Court Judge Dan Polster that he was 100 percent guilty. He said that he constantly replayed his misdeeds in his mind.

Im ashamed, Norton said. I made the wrong choice. I apologize to everyone that Ive wronged.

Polster handed down the sentences during a hearing held over Zoom. The judge presided over a portion of the sentencing conducted under seal, and court officials closed it to the public.

Polster told Norton, who faced a maximum of six months in federal prison under sentencing guidelines, that he usually sends people who obstruct justice and compromise undercover investigations to prison. The judge said he believed Norton learned his lesson and is unlikely to commit any more crimes.

Its not because I dont think what you did was very serious, Polster said.

Veals, who also pleaded guilty to obstructing justice, told Polster she regretted her actions.

FBI agents and the Office of Inspector General of the U.S. Housing and Urban Development were looking into allegations of bribery and fraud in East Cleveland that city officials said involved demolition contracts.

Federal prosecutors opened a grand jury investigation in 2017 after Norton had left office, and voters elected current East Cleveland Mayor Brandon King. Federal authorities interviewed Norton in September 2018 and told him about the investigation and not to tell anyone other than his attorney about it, the charges said.

Norton told Veals about the investigation and his interview that same day and denied doing so when federal agents asked him about it later, according to court documents.

Prosecutors bought charges against Veals after federal agents said she told another city employee about the investigation after Norton told her. She is also accused of forging another city employees signature on East Cleveland city letterhead after Norton emailed her and asked her to have that employee sign them.

Veals later deleted the emails and attachments that Norton had sent to her, the charges said.

Norton served on East Cleveland City Council from 2004 until he was elected mayor in 2009. Voters ousted him from office in a 2016 recall election.

His attorney, John Mitchell, told Polster that Norton is focused on raising his children and continuing down his second path in life.

Norton is a good and decent man who made a tremendous mistake, Mitchell said.

Veals worked for the city from 2007 to 2019, according to court filings. Her attorney, Harvey Bruner, told Polster that Veals lost her job in East Cleveland as a result of her actions in this case. She has since obtained her real estate license and plans to pursue a career in that field, he said.

Rainbow Diet: HEREs what you should know about this colourful diet plan – PINKVILLA

Rainbow diet means to have different and colourful foods on your plate that aid in different health aspects. So, Luke Coutinho, Holistic Lifestyle Coach, founder of YouCare, makes you understand what the Rainbow Diet is all about.

When it comes to eating healthy, people are often confused about what should they be eating, how their plate should look like, which vegetables and fruits they should be eating, etc. The simplest way to make sure you are eating well is to look out for a rainbow on your plate. So, Luke Coutinho, Holistic Lifestyle Coach, founder of YouCare, gives you a complete guide on Rainbow Diet.

What is Rainbow Diet?

Making your plate look like a rainbow means, making your plate as colourful as possible like adding foods that are differently coloured, like green, red, purple, yellow, orange, pretty much like a colourful rainbow. Consuming a rainbow of fruits and vegetables ensures that you not only get enough of the different nutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals which are necessary for the overall health of the body.

Importance of Colours on Foods?

Ever wondered the reason behind different colours of fruits and vegetables? Every fruit or vegetable colour has a deep meaning behind it. These colours are due to the presence of an array of unique disease-fighting chemicals called 'phytonutrients' and each colour stands for a unique

phytochemical. It is these phytochemicals, which give the fruits and vegetables a unique vibrant colour and numerous health benefits along with it. By eating all the colours of the nutritional rainbow, you will harness the power of these cancer-fighting and immune-boosting foods.

So how to build a rainbow plate and what does each colour signify?

1.Lycopene (red colour):

Lycopene reduces the risk of breast and prostate cancer. The pigment boosts heart, brain, eye, and bone health. Red coloured foods are watermelon, tomatoes, strawberries, red bell pepper, and grapefruit.

2. Beta-carotene (orange colour):

Beta carotene is a precursor to Vitamin A and has anti-cancer properties, reduces inflammation, supports the immune system, and boosts vision. Foods rich in beta-carotene are carrots, apricot, spinach, yellow pumpkin, and sweet potatoes.

3. Vitamin C and flavonoids (yellow colour):

Vitamin C-rich foods are brimming with antioxidants, help inhibit tumour cell growth, detoxify harmful substances, boost your immune system, reduce inflammation, and improve heart health. Vitamin C is generally found in citrus fruits like oranges, papayas, and lemons, kale, strawberries and broccoli.

4. Folate (deep dark green colour)

Folate-rich foods help build healthy cells and genetic material and boosts heart health. They are iron-rich and help maintain healthy hemoglobin levels. They are also rich in chlorophyll, a plant pigment that helps in increasing oxygenation levels of the blood and acts as a blood purifier. Foods like eggs, citrus fruits, asparagus, legumes, leafy greens, Brussel sprouts, and beetroots leaves are rich in folate.

5. Indoles and lutein (light green colour)

Rich in sulphur, Indoles eliminates excess estrogen and carcinogens and support eye health. Foods containing indoles are cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kale, mustard greens, and broccoli.

6. Anthocyanins (blue-purple colour):

Anthocyanins destroy free radicals, reduce inflammation, and are beneficial for the brain. Anthocyanins are found in foods like eggplant, blueberries, plums, cherries, and grapes.

7. Resveratrol (pink colour):

Resveratrol helps decrease estrogen production, boost heart health and brain health. Foods rich in resveratrol are peanuts, dark chocolate, cranberries, and grapes.

8. Fibre (brown colour):

Fibre again offers a wide range of health benefits. It helps balance sugar levels, reduces blood sugar spikes, regulates bowel movements, lipid control, digestive health, and aids in weight management. Apart from this, it also removes carcinogens. Fresh fruits, dark green vegetables, healthy nuts and seeds, and whole grains are all rich in fibre.

Ways one could add this rainbow to their plates?

Stir fry vegetables or sauted vegetables, salad, chopped vegetables to dals, soups, vegetable sticks with healthy dips, pulao with vegetables like green peas, beetroot, carrots, beans etc. can help you have a proper Rainbow Diet.

Global Stair Lifts Market Trajectory & Analytics Report 2021: An Aging World & Mobility for the Elderly & Disabled will Lift the Market to…

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The "Stair Lifts - Global Market Trajectory & Analytics" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering.

After Passing Over of the COVID-19 Storm What's Next in Healthcare Focus? An Aging World & Mobility for the Elderly & Disabled.

The global market for Stair Lifts is projected to reach US$1.3 billion by the year 2027, trailing a post COVID-19 CAGR of 5% over the analysis period 2020 through 2027.

World's population is rapidly aging supported by the increase in longevity as modern medicine becomes increasingly effective in preventing chronic disease, and reducing mortality. Also, easy access to age-friendly primary healthcare and growing sophistication of healthcare infrastructure play key roles in longevity.

For the first time in human the percentage of older people in the total population is continuing to increase. In addition to the aforementioned increase in life expectancy, falling fertility rates are accelerating the trend. The aging population creates massive challenges for the healthcare system.

By the year 2025, the need to care for an aging population will require a large and specialized healthcare workforce. Against this backdrop, there is a pressing need for communities to rethink issues such as housing, transportation, social services, health and wellness programs. Aging-in-Place is a powerful driver of assisted living technologies with over 9 in 10 seniors expressing willingness to live in their current homes over the next 6 to 12 years.

The trend is expected to gather even greater force, given the risk of virus transmission in nursing homes. Falling down the stairs is the leading cause of serious injury among the elderly aged over 65 years. Stair lifts help eliminate the risk, allowing seniors with mobility issues to remain in their homes longer & postpone premature shifting into a senior care facility.

Stair lifts or chairlifts or stair gliders are mechanical devices that enable individuals who suffer movement disabilities to go up and down the staircase without assistance. A stair lift comprises motorized seats that are electrically-powered and can be deployed on a straight or a curved staircase and also can be tailored as per the needs.

Stair lifts for residential use represents a large and growing segment given the growing desire of elderly people to lead independent lives. The market also stands to benefit from the growing trend towards smart homes. Defined as a process of automating the entire home environment by pre-programming various household chores and appliances and enabling combined in-built monitoring, home automation systems improve the user's lifestyle by offering real benefits such as comfort, security and power conservation.

Given the continued importance of accessibility in homes, there will be focus on technology advancements in stair lifts market. Stannah for instance is focusing efforts on incorporating innovative technology into stair lifts. Although the fundamental design of stair lift is unlikely to change dramatically in the near future, new types of stair lifts are being developed.

New Study Reveals One Major Side Effect of Exercising More | Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That

Sure, exercise helps your muscles, your brain, and your lifespan. (In some cases, it can even cause harm; for more on the dangerous side effects of exercise, see here.) But according to a new study published in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine, working out more every day can also enhance your feelings of purpose in life, and science shows that living a more purposeful and meaningful life is also a happier and longer one. Read on for more about this new study and what it means for you. And for more on the benefits of exercise, check out why Walking This Way Can Add 20 Years to Your Life, Says Top Scientist.

The study was led by Ayse Yemiscigil, Ph.D., a postdoctoral researcher at the Human Flourishing Program at Harvard University, and Ivo Vlaev, D.Phil, a professor of behavioral science at the UK's University of Warwick. The researchers first studied data provided by the big (and still going) Health and Retirement Study, where people over 50 report on their daily activities and mental health. Then, the researchers reference another study of more than 4,000 people who answered questions about their physical and mental health, as well as their sense of purpose.

Yemiscigil and Vlaev analyzed the data to figure out how much and how vigorously the people moved throughout their days, along with their feelings of purpose. And for more exercise news you can use, read up on the One Body Part You Never Exercise But Should, Say Experts.

The researchers found that exercise is not only linked with stronger feelings of purpose, but it creates a virtuous cycle, as those feelings of purpose then propel people to exercise more. What was especially interesting was how exercising earlier in life was found to be linked with a greater sense of purpose in people's later yearsand vice versa.

"People who started off with active lives generally showed an increasing sense of purpose over the years, and those whose sense of purpose was sturdier in the beginning were the most physically active years later," observed The New York Times, which also noted that those who feel purposeful early in life tend to take an extra walk "or two" every week later in life.

"It was especially interesting to see these effects in older people," Yemiscigil told the NY Times, "since many older people report a decreasing sense of purpose in their lives, and they also typically have low rates of engagement in physical activity."

Paul Dolan, Ph.D., is perhaps the world's most foremost expert on happiness. In his terrific book Happiness by Design, he defined happiness essentially as the perfect balance between "pleasure and purpose." Having more pleasure in your hard-partying college years may make you happier, but you also have a sense of purpose that you're being educated. Meanwhile, having more purpose in your child-rearing years may make you happier. It's an always-changing mix, he argued, and you need both of them to be happy, wherever the pleasure/purpose pendulum may be swinging.

According to data compiled by the University of Minnesota, having a stronger sense of purpose is linked to a longer life, a lower risk of heart disease, better protection against Alzheimer's disease, and even better pain management.

"Purpose is belonging to something bigger and greater than ourselves," longevity expert Kien Vuu, MD, once told The Beet.

His advice? Find something in your community where you can find healthy connections and contribute to a cause that is bigger than yourself. "On average, people live seven years longer if they have a deep sense of purpose," said Vuu. "They also had a limited risk of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attack and stroke, which are the number one killer among Americans. If you happen to be hospitalized, if you have a sense of purpose, you actually spend fewer days in the hospital. This really is medicine, and purpose actually has biological effects." Fast Bar is the First Nutrition Bar to Keep the Body in Fasting State, New Study Concludes – PRNewswire

Developed based on L-Nutra's Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD) technology, Fast Bar is the first nutrition bar specifically designed for intermittent fasting, and clinically proven to keep the body in a continued fasting state. This breakthrough formulation allows consumers to stay nourished and fast with food, instead of water fasting. Fast Bar is formulated with plant-based proteins, healthy fats mainly from macadamia nuts, pecans and almonds, and fiber-rich carbs that fuel the body while keeping it in ketosis. It is non-GMO, gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, and made with no artificial sweeteners or preservatives.

"This research is the first of its kind to scientifically reveal that the body reacts to Fast Bar in a way that is comparable to a water-only fast," said Dr. Om Ganda, Associate Clinical Professor at Harvard Medical School. "This means that it can be effectively used to facilitate the practice of both time-restricted eating and intermittent fasting."

This randomized, controlled study monitored 105 adults who fasted for 15 hours overnight, then had glucose and ketone levels measured every hour for four hours after consuming either a Fast Bar, an average breakfast, or just water. The Fast Bar group had glucose levels comparable to that of the water-only group throughout the hours after the meal, and ketone levels that were similar to the water-only group 2 or more hours after the meal.

"Fasting is the #1 top-searched diet in America, yet many people struggle with the physical strain of going 14-18 hours on water alone to lose weight and enhance their metabolism. The long hours of no food stresses essential organs that need nourishment to perform," said L-Nutra Chief Executive Officer and Board Chairman Joseph Antoun. "Fast Bar ensures the best of both worlds, where one can maintain a state of ketosis similar to water fasting while still nourishing the body. This breakthrough finding cements L-Nutra as the leading nutri-tech company at the intersection of fasting, nutrition and longevity."

Throughout the four hours of monitoring glucose and ketone levels, those who only consumed water showed a much stronger desire to eat and had less sense of fullness than the Fast Bar group. This study also showed that the consumption of Fast Bar did not cause a spike in blood sugar levels and resulted in less desire to eat over time than only drinking water.

"Fasting provides a wide array of health benefits including cellular rejuvenation, weight loss, and support of metabolic balance," said Dr. Darria Long, TEDx speaker and specialist in emergency medicine. "More consumers are interested in fasting every year, and Fast Bar is the smarter way to fast longer while also staying satiated."

"The results of this study now categorically show that Fast Bar consumption can be used to effectively mimic the practice of a water-only fast," said Dr. William Hsu, Chief Medical Officer at L-Nutra. "As consumer interest in intermittent fasting for weight management and improved metabolic health continues to grow, these findings are especially impactful."

Fast Bar is made with plant-based protein and is available in three flavors nuts + dark cocoa, nuts + cacao chips, and nuts + honey. Two new flavors, lemon berry and blueberry acai, will launch this summer on FastBar.com and at Sprouts Market.

Young Black Atlanta women are more likely to develop heart disease | TheHill – The Hill

In Atlanta, Black women in their 20s are more likely to develop heart disease due to health conditions, new research shows.

A study released on Tuesday shows that out of the about 1,000 Black women surveyed, women under the age of 40 were more likely to eat fast food, which can result in higher-than-recommended salt intakes and lead to high blood pressure and body mass among all age groups.

It just reinforces the point that preventative cardiovascular disease care needs to implemented early in young Black women, Nishant Vatsa, Emory Universitys internal medicine resident colleges hospital and lead author of the study, told The Atlanta Journal Constitution.

The survey was part of Emory University's 10,000 Women Project, which provides free cardiovascular risk screenings, education and resources for follow-up care to decrease heart disease and high blood pressure in women, especially Black women, NPR reported. The women, who ranged from their 20s to 60s, were surveyed between 2015 and 2018 by researchers at Emory University from large churches and civic organizations, 30 percent of whom had post-graduate degrees.

"The data that we collected was through questionnaires asking about certain socioeconomic risk factors such as income, education and health insurance," Vatsa said. "We also asked about certain lifestyle risk factors that are related to cardiovascular disease, particularly relating to diet and exercise, as well as smoking habits."

Black women in Atlanta are already three to four times more likely to die from childbirth than white women in the same city, the AJC reported, giving them the worst maternal mortality rates in the nation.
