The opportunity to build the Bay Area we want is here, and artists can lead the way – San Francisco Chronicle

Walking the streets of San Franciscos Mission District, a rich tapestry of public art unfolds, wall after wall embroidered with vibrant murals. Several are by Luca Gonzlez Ippolito, an artist, teacher, activist and Mission District native. Her murals including Mission Makeover, documenting the changes in the neighborhood are regular stops on public art tours, and she co-founded the San Francisco Poster Syndicate, a collaborative that creates and distributes free political posters. My goal is to use my art to educate people and invoke questions, for those who are being unheard, she says.

Like many other local artists, Gonzlez Ippolito is navigating the rising boil of the Bay Areas economic cauldron. Tuition costs forced her to drop out of her art therapy masters degree program at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, and she stitched together a patchwork of income sources to sustain herself. But the coronavirus has threatened her stability. Her job as a preschool teacher was a pandemic casualty, and shes living on a grant from the San Francisco Arts Commission, creating a graphic novel about Mission District youth impacted by gentrification, gang violence and immigration issues. Shes not sure what will happen when the funding runs out.

Artists like Gonzlez Ippolito fuel the creative energy woven into the Bay Areas identity an energy that informs our sense of place as much as landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge. But the housing crisis, the disappearance of studios and galleries, and a culture that undervalues their work have made it increasingly difficult for artists to survive here. Like residents of a coral reef, weve been living through the slow bleaching of our creative ecosystem.

But as the pandemic forces us to rethink how we live and work, and energy from the protests floods our streets, people from all corners of the artistic community are seeing opportunity. Theyre moving forward with ideas and projects that have the potential to create a new Bay Area, one where artists and creative workers can survive and thrive.

Weve been working in a broken system, and COVID-19 brought that into sharper relief, says Yerba Buena Center for the Arts CEO Deborah Cullinan. We need support structures for artists and art workers, because we know how disproportionately vulnerable our artists are.

Together with YBCA Chief of Strategy and Revenue Penelope Douglas, Cullinan founded CultureBank, a social investment fund for artists doing community development work. Their first cohort in Dallas created enterprises like a literacy initiative that built reading nooks and distributed free books, and a catering business focused on immigrant women who shared stories through food. In April, CultureBank announced a new group of six West Oakland artists working on projects to spark community change.

CultureBank is also exploring collaborations with art collectors to leverage their collections value to fund forgivable loans for artists, and partnering with health organizations to pay artists based on improved health outcomes from their work.

Were disconnecting art from the financial system that ignores the value our artistic communities bring, Cullinan says. Its not a return on investment, its a ripple on investment.

Meklit Hadero, YBCA chief of program and a talented Ethiopian jazz singer and songwriter, sees potential for those ripples to become a tidal wave. Were at a place where we can reshape our systems. I have a lot of hope for this moment, she says. But equity cant be an afterthought. It needs to be baked into our recovery, as does creativity, at the ground level.

The pandemic has also accelerated the ongoing loss of galleries, vital venues where artists show and sell their work. Those that remain are often perceived as walled gardens, barring artists and audiences from entry. Gallery owner, artist and curator Rhiannon Evans MacFadyen wants to change that. Her gallery, Black & White Projects, is temporarily closed due to the coronavirus, but Evans MacFadyen is collaborating with a group of artists on an arts-based social club model that would use tax-exempt 501(c)7 or 501(c)8 legal structures typically used by organizations like the Elks Lodge and the Bohemian Club. The social club (dubbed the Society of the Smokey Mirror) is still in the experimental stages, but when indoor spaces are permitted to reopen, Evans MacFadyen sees potential for a self-sustaining, inclusive artistic space where artists could show their work and manage their own sales transactions without paying gallery commissions.

After seeing the loss of artistic spaces throughout our region, San Francisco Ballet principal dancer Mathilde Froustey founded La Maison, a performance space, gallery and artist residency, in 2017. The physical location has permanently closed (another casualty of the pandemic), but Froustey is working on a virtual La Maison with partners from the art and technology worlds. She envisions a membership-based model that would create a digital venue for dancers to interact directly with their audiences and funnel revenues back to participating artists.

We need to be able to make a living and still dance, she says. Were all struggling.

Were in the middle of this accelerated change. We need new prototypes and new ideas, says JooWan Kim, founder and artistic director of hip-hop orchestra Ensemble Mik Nawooj. He sees tech money as one path to a sustainable creative ecosystem in the Bay Area. We need to have companies like Facebook and Amazon fund new concepts and ideas in the art world, he says. We should have a universal basic income for artists if theyre doing work that benefits the Bay Area.

But the ensemble's resident MC, hip-hop artist Sandman, also sounds a cautionary note about this potential evolution, one that applies to many sectors of the art world: We need to have a system of rotating gatekeepers, he says. Everyone has biases, and we need to make sure that artists arent kept out because of it.

Others see potential in our streets, as the pandemic forces us to rethink traditional arts spaces.

On every city block in San Francisco, we should create at least one open space that can be used by the community for creativity, says Dena Beard, director of the San Francisco experimental arts space the Lab. Doing something like that would be messy and complicated, but its the kind of messy and complicated we need. The arts are a means of changing perspective. Artists show us a different way of seeing the world.

What world would we see if these visions became reality?

Imagine it: Traditional institutions turn inside out, and art moves from behind walls and out of silos onto the streets. Those streets and sidewalks are permanently repurposed for both transportation and celebration art, sculpture, dance and performance open to all. Galleries, theaters and virtual venues evolve to give artists new ways to connect with audiences while making a living, and the legacy gatekeepers that decided who was seen (and paid) lose power. Deep financial support from sectors like health care, business and technology offer artists the time and space to make ambitious work outside the commercially-viable box, and many focus on benefiting their communities, creating deep-rooted change. Through it all, audiences are immersed in new perspectives, broadening their perception of what is possible.

An explosion of that magnitude could reshape everything. Hadero says, From art, we create culture. From culture, we build policies. From policies, we build cities. Perhaps the opportunity to build the city, society and world that we want is here and artists can lead the way, inviting us to soar.

Correction: A previous version of this story misattributed a quote to JooWan Kim. It was said by hip-hop artist Sandman.

Google reportedly negotiating with Samsung to push Assistant over Bixby – The Verge

Google and Samsung are in discussions for a deal that would give the US tech giants services more prominence on Samsung phones at the expense of those from the Korean manufacturer, according to a report by Bloomberg. The deal would reportedly involve promoting the Google Assistant and the Play Store over Samsungs own alternatives.

Samsung is the worlds biggest smartphone company and by far the leading Android handset maker in the US. While its phones use Googles Android operating system, Samsung has consistently tried to build out an ecosystem of its own software that runs atop Android, including the Bixby voice assistant and the Galaxy app store. Googles own products are still available on Samsungs phones, but Samsung has gone as far as to include dedicated buttons on its hardware in an attempt to make Bixby the most accessible option for customers.

Google and Samsung have clashed over the smartphone makers Android customizations before, and Samsung reportedly agreed to tone down some of its TouchWiz tweaks in 2014. While it sounds like Google still may not be happy with whats transpired since then, Samsung will take some convincing this time. Potential terms of the deal havent been disclosed, but as Bloomberg notes, Google has a multi-billion-dollar agreement with Apple to be the default search provider in the Safari browser.

Another twist in this story is that the news comes as Google is joining other tech giants in attempting to convince US lawmakers that it isnt abusing its power. The Play Store and Googles mandatory service bundling on Android phones have received heightened antitrust scrutiny, and a deal with Samsung could undermine Googles argument that the Android platform enables strong competition.

Samsung remains committed to our own ecosystem and services, a Samsung spokesperson tells Bloomberg in a statement. At the same time, Samsung closely works with Google and other partners to offer the best mobile experiences for our users.

Like all Android device makers, Samsung is free to create its own app store and digital assistant, a Google spokesperson says. Thats one of the great features of the Android platform. And while we regularly talk with partners about ways to improve the user experience, we have no plans to change that.

The future of the workplace an ecosystem of workplaces – thedesertreview.com

Cushman & Wakefield designed a report encapsulating the success, challenges, and possible future of the workplace and how COVID-19 has impacted the workplace experience with information derived from data-driven insights collected by the company. According to Chief Executive of Global Occupier Services Bill Knightly, the purpose of the report is to develop an ecosystem of workplaces.

Knightly said the pandemic has brought about changes to the workplace that could have long-lasting impacts. He said this does not have to be a negative thing. Knightly said the report was not about the return to work, but rather the return to the office.

He cited three key findings from the collected data employees can be productive anywhere, flexibility and choice to work from anywhere is accelerating, and the new normal will be a total workplace ecosystem.

According to the report, remote workers have always done well. Prior to COVID-19, employees who worked remotely were more engaged and had a better workplace experience than those who worked in an office. The report concluded working from anywhere is effective.

Employees are reporting they have the ability to focus when required. This is not to say that the current situation has been without challenges, but for the most part, people have been able to adapt and overcome, said Knightly.

The report also stated 73 percent of the workforce believe their company should embrace some level of working from home. Data indicated 90 percent of employees said they felt they were trusted to work remotely.

With a variety of workplaces, the report indicated there will be an ecosystem of different locations and experiences to support convenience, functionality, and well-being.

We believe a few things. The office isnt going anywhere, offices will continue to thrive but maybe in new ways and the office may have a new, or more well-defined purpose, said Knightly.

Knightly went on to discuss some of the workplace experience outcomes both success and challenges.

The report shows 75 percent 10 percent higher than pre-COVID rates of those who responded to surveys said they are collaborating effectively with colleagues in the current environment.

While it is important to acknowledge the success, it is also equally important to learn from the challenges. Although a rather cliched expression, this current state of work is truly the worlds largest work from home experiment, said Knightly.

As indicated in the report, only a little more than half of survey respondents feel connected to their colleagues, leading to a negative impact connection to company culture and personal and professional development. While employees feel high levels of trust, confidence, and pride in the company, they struggle with their personal connection to the culture, according to Knightly.

Working from home is tougher for younger generations, according to the findings in the report. Due to most likely living in shared spaces or parents, 70 percent of Gen Z employees said they had inadequate workspace. Almost 70 percent of Millennials and Gen X employees reported struggling with caregiver duties. The report shows Baby Boomers to be coping and adapting the best to working from home, reporting fewer challenges.

The report also sought to answer who should return to work as restrictions ease. The answer, according to Cushman & Wakefield, is for companies and businesses to understand their employees challenges and consider how best to support them. Some positions, as stated in the report, feed off face-to-face interactions, while others experience little downside to working remotely.

As we look to the future, the key learning from the current work from home experience is that organizations will embrace more remote working, said Knightly. In doing so, there is an imperative to recognize that the workplace is no longer a single location, but an ecosystem of a variety of locations and experiences.

Clinical Trial of Imfinzi (Durvalumab) in Conjunction with Chemotherapy Yields Significantly Longer Survival Time for Patients Diagnosed with…

Immuno-Oncology News recently published results of a Phase 2 clinical trial of the immuno-checkpoint inhibitor Imfinzi (durvalumab) for patients diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma.

The PrECOG cancer research group tested the effects of pairing Imfinzi, an AstraZeneca drug that blocks the activity of the PD-1 receptor in immune T-cells, with standard chemotherapy on a group of 55 individuals who had been recently diagnosed with inoperable malignant pleural mesothelioma. The PD-1/PD-L1 pathway affects inflammation, which causes pleural mesothelioma to develop at a faster rate.

The trial revealed that patients who took Imfinzi in addition to running out courses of standard chemotherapy (pemetrexed with cisplatin or carboplatin) survived for an average of 20.4 months, whereas patients who were given only standard chemotherapy lived for an average of 12.1 months. 81.8 percent of participants were male, their median age was 68, and three-quarters of them had been diagnosed with the epithelioid cancer subtype of malignant pleural mesothelioma.

[Imfinzi] plus standard chemotherapy delivered a promising median overall survival rate for patients with previously untreated, inoperable malignant pleural mesothelioma, affirmed Dr. Patrick Forde, director of the Kimmel Centers thoracic cancer clinical research program, in a news release from the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

AstraZeneca, PrECOG, and the University of Sydney have plans to enroll participants who have been diagnosed with previously untreated, inoperable malignant pleural mesothelioma in a Phase 3 trial in Australia and the United States in September. More details about the upcoming clinical trial can be found here.

Rationalism | Britannica

Rationalism, in Western philosophy, the view that regards reason as the chief source and test of knowledge. Holding that reality itself has an inherently logical structure, the rationalist asserts that a class of truths exists that the intellect can grasp directly. There are, according to the rationalists, certain rational principlesespecially in logic and mathematics, and even in ethics and metaphysicsthat are so fundamental that to deny them is to fall into contradiction. The rationalists confidence in reason and proof tends, therefore, to detract from their respect for other ways of knowing.

Rationalism has long been the rival of empiricism, the doctrine that all knowledge comes from, and must be tested by, sense experience. As against this doctrine, rationalism holds reason to be a faculty that can lay hold of truths beyond the reach of sense perception, both in certainty and generality. In stressing the existence of a natural light, rationalism has also been the rival of systems claiming esoteric knowledge, whether from mystical experience, revelation, or intuition, and has been opposed to various irrationalisms that tend to stress the biological, the emotional or volitional, the unconscious, or the existential at the expense of the rational.

Rationalism has somewhat different meanings in different fields, depending upon the kind of theory to which it is opposed.

In the psychology of perception, for example, rationalism is in a sense opposed to the genetic psychology of the Swiss scholar Jean Piaget (18961980), who, exploring the development of thought and behaviour in the infant, argued that the categories of the mind develop only through the infants experience in concourse with the world. Similarly, rationalism is opposed to transactionalism, a point of view in psychology according to which human perceptual skills are achievements, accomplished through actions performed in response to an active environment. On this view, the experimental claim is made that perception is conditioned by probability judgments formed on the basis of earlier actions performed in similar situations. As a corrective to these sweeping claims, the rationalist defends a nativism, which holds that certain perceptual and conceptual capacities are innateas suggested in the case of depth perception by experiments with the visual cliff, which, though platformed over with firm glass, the infant perceives as hazardousthough these native capacities may at times lie dormant until the appropriate conditions for their emergence arise.

In the comparative study of languages, a similar nativism was developed in the 1950s by the innovating syntactician Noam Chomsky, who, acknowledging a debt to Ren Descartes (15961650), explicitly accepted the rationalistic doctrine of innate ideas. Though the thousands of languages spoken in the world differ greatly in sounds and symbols, they sufficiently resemble each other in syntax to suggest that there is a schema of universal grammar determined by innate presettings in the human mind itself. These presettings, which have their basis in the brain, set the pattern for all experience, fix the rules for the formation of meaningful sentences, and explain why languages are readily translatable into one another. It should be added that what rationalists have held about innate ideas is not that some ideas are full-fledged at birth but only that the grasp of certain connections and self-evident principles, when it comes, is due to inborn powers of insight rather than to learning by experience.

Common to all forms of speculative rationalism is the belief that the world is a rationally ordered whole, the parts of which are linked by logical necessity and the structure of which is therefore intelligible. Thus, in metaphysics it is opposed to the view that reality is a disjointed aggregate of incoherent bits and is thus opaque to reason. In particular, it is opposed to the logical atomisms of such thinkers as David Hume (171176) and the early Ludwig Wittgenstein (18891951), who held that facts are so disconnected that any fact might well have been different from what it is without entailing a change in any other fact. Rationalists have differed, however, with regard to the closeness and completeness with which the facts are bound together. At the lowest level, they have all believed that the law of contradiction A and not-A cannot coexist holds for the real world, which means that every truth is consistent with every other; at the highest level, they have held that all facts go beyond consistency to a positive coherence; i.e., they are so bound up with each other that none could be different without all being different.

In the field where its claims are clearestin epistemology, or theory of knowledgerationalism holds that at least some human knowledge is gained through a priori (prior to experience), or rational, insight as distinct from sense experience, which too often provides a confused and merely tentative approach. In the debate between empiricism and rationalism, empiricists hold the simpler and more sweeping position, the Humean claim that all knowledge of fact stems from perception. Rationalists, on the contrary, urge that some, though not all, knowledge arises through direct apprehension by the intellect. What the intellectual faculty apprehends is objects that transcend sense experienceuniversals and their relations. A universal is an abstraction, a characteristic that may reappear in various instances: the number three, for example, or the triangularity that all triangles have in common. Though these cannot be seen, heard, or felt, rationalists point out that humans can plainly think about them and about their relations. This kind of knowledge, which includes the whole of logic and mathematics as well as fragmentary insights in many other fields, is, in the rationalist view, the most important and certain knowledge that the mind can achieve. Such a priori knowledge is both necessary (i.e., it cannot be conceived as otherwise) and universal, in the sense that it admits of no exceptions. In the critical philosophy of Immanuel Kant (17241804), epistemological rationalism finds expression in the claim that the mind imposes its own inherent categories or forms upon incipient experience (see below Epistemological rationalism in modern philosophies).

In ethics, rationalism holds the position that reason, rather than feeling, custom, or authority, is the ultimate court of appeal in judging good and bad, right and wrong. Among major thinkers, the most notable representative of rational ethics is Kant, who held that the way to judge an act is to check its self-consistency as apprehended by the intellect: to note, first, what it is essentially, or in principlea lie, for example, or a theftand then to ask if one can consistently will that the principle be made universal. Is theft, then, right? The answer must be No, because, if theft were generally approved, peoples property would not be their own as opposed to anyone elses, and theft would then become meaningless; the notion, if universalized, would thus destroy itself, as reason by itself is sufficient to show.

In religion, rationalism commonly means that all human knowledge comes through the use of natural faculties, without the aid of supernatural revelation. Reason is here used in a broader sense, referring to human cognitive powers generally, as opposed to supernatural grace or faiththough it is also in sharp contrast to so-called existential approaches to truth. Reason, for the rationalist, thus stands opposed to many of the religions of the world, including Christianity, which have held that the divine has revealed itself through inspired persons or writings and which have required, at times, that its claims be accepted as infallible, even when they do not accord with natural knowledge. Religious rationalists hold, on the other hand, that if the clear insights of human reason must be set aside in favour of alleged revelation, then human thought is everywhere rendered suspecteven in the reasonings of the theologians themselves. There cannot be two ultimately different ways of warranting truth, they assert; hence rationalism urges that reason, with its standard of consistency, must be the final court of appeal. Religious rationalism can reflect either a traditional piety, when endeavouring to display the alleged sweet reasonableness of religion, or an antiauthoritarian temper, when aiming to supplant religion with the goddess of reason.

Rationalism in Philosophical Traditions – ThoughtCo

Rationalism is the philosophical stance according to which reason is the ultimate source of human knowledge. It stands in contrast toempiricism, according to which the senses suffice in justifying knowledge.

In one form or another, rationalism features in most philosophical traditions. In the Western tradition, it boasts a long and distinguished list of followers, including Plato, Descartes, and Kant. Rationalism continues to be a major philosophical approach to decision-making today.

How do we come to know objects through the senses or through reason? According toDescartes, the latter option is the correct one.

As an example of Descartes' approach to rationalism, consider polygons (i.e. closed, plane figures in geometry). How do we know that something is a triangle as opposed to a square? The senses may seem to play a key role in our understanding: we see that a figure has three sides or four sides. But now consider two polygons one with athousand sides and the other with a thousand and one sides. Which is which? In order to distinguish between the two, it will be necessary to count the sides using reason to tell them apart. For Descartes, reason is involved in all of our knowledge. This is because our understanding of objects is nuanced by reason. For example, how do you know that the person in the mirror is, in fact, yourself? How does each of us recognize the purpose or significance of objects such as pots, guns, or fences? How do we distinguish one similar object from another? Reason alone can explain such puzzles.

Since the justification of knowledge occupies a central role in philosophical theorizing, it is typical to sort out philosophers on the basis of their stance with respect to the rationalist vs. empiricist debate. Rationalism indeed characterizes a wide range of philosophical topics.

Of course, in a practical sense, it is almost impossible to separate rationalism from empiricism. We cannot make rational decisions without the information provided to us through our senses, nor can we make empirical decisions without considering their rational implications.

Rationalism: Examples and Definition | Philosophy Terms

I. Definition

Rationalism is the philosophy that knowledge comes from logic and a certain kind of intuitionwhen we immediately know something to be true without deduction, such as I am conscious. Rationalists hold that the best way to arrive at certain knowledge is using the minds rational abilities. The opposite of rationalism is empiricism, or the view that knowledge comes from observing the outside world. However, in practice almost all philosophers and scientists use a combination of empiricism and rationalism.

Rationalism is an idea about where knowledge comes from, and is therefore part of the philosophical sub-field of epistemology.

Math provides a good illustration of rationalism: to a rationalist, you dont have to observe the world or have experiences in order to know that 1+1=2. You just have to understand the concepts one and addition, and then you can know that its true. Empiricists, on the other hand, argue that this is not true; they point out that we can only rely on mathematical equations based on some experience of the world, for example having one cookie, being given another, and then having two.

Rationalism and empiricism both play a role in science, though they correspond to different branches of science. Rationalism corresponds to mathematical analysis, whereas empiricism corresponds to experiments and observation.

Of course, the best route to knowledge combines rational contemplation and empirical observation. Rationalists and empiricists agree on that; they just disagree on which one is more important or primary.

Constructivism is an effort to combine empiricism and rationalism. According to constructivists, we can observe the world around us and gain a lot of knowledge this way (thats the empiricist part), but in order to understand or explain what we know, we have to fit it into an existing structure. That is, we have to construct a rational set of ideas that can make sense of the empirical data (thats the rationalist part). Constructivism is a popular idea among teachers, who find it helpful in structuring lessons: constructivist teaching involves presenting new information in a way designed to fit in with what the student already knows, so that they can gradually build up an understanding of the world for themselves.

Many people think that the progress of the human race is based on experiences of an empirical, critical nature, but I say that true knowledge is to be had only through a philosophy of deduction . . . Intuition makes us look at unrelated facts and then think about them until they can all be brought under one law. (Albert Einstein)

Many people think of science as an inherently empirical discipline after all, its based mainly on observation and experiments, right? But theres also a rationalist side to science as seen in this quote from Einstein. Einstein was not big on experiments or peering through telescopes. Instead, he took data that other people had collected and tried to understand it rationally (i.e. mathematically). His brilliant theories of special and general relativity were not the results of new experiments, but rather the result of applying a keen rational eyeand intuitionto existing data.

Music has always been inseparable from religious expression, since, like religion at its best, music marks the limits of reason. Because a territory is defined by its extremities, it follows that music must be definitively rational. (Karen Armstrong)

Many rationalist philosophers are fascinated by music, for exactly the reasons that Karen Armstrong points out in this quote. Music is intensely rational in some ways (you can analyze its structures and frequencies and find all sorts of mathematical patterns there), but its also extremely emotional and seems to short-circuit our rational brains. Thus, music exists right on the boundary between rational and anti-rational. Armstrong also makes the more controversial, but no less interesting, claim that religion works in a similar way, operating at the boundaries between rational thought and non-rational emotions.

Rationalism has deep historical roots; you might even say that its discovery defines the birth of philosophy in various cultures. The ancient Greeks are probably the most famous example: ancient philosophers such as Plato and Pythagoras argued that reality is characterized by some basic abstract logical principles, and that if we know these principles, then we can derive further truths about reality. (Thats the same Pythagoras who invented the famous Pythagorean Theorem more evidence of the connection between rationalism and math.)

However, other Greeks disagreed. Aristotle, for example, based much of his philosophy on observation. He was fascinated by the natural world and spent much of his time gathering samples of plants and animals; in some ways he was the first modern biologist. This method is, of course, based on observation and therefore is a kind of empiricism.

Rationalism really took off in the Medieval Islamic world, where Muslim philosophers looked to Plato for inspiration. Platos rationalism proved to be extremely important to medieval Islam, which was an intensely rationalistic religion based on logical deduction. Its first principle was tawheed, or the Unity of God, and all other truths were thought to be logical consequences of that single revelation.

Both rationalism and empiricism played a major role in the Scientific Revolution. Empiricists did experiments and made observations by, for example, looking through telescopes. But many of the most important discoveries were made by rational analysis, not empirical observation. And of course, the experiments were also partially inspired by reason and intuition.

Isaac Newton developed his theory of gravity by working out the mathematical relationship between falling objects and orbiting planets. (Sometimes people say that Newton discovered gravity, but really its more accurate to say that he explained gravity.)

The debate between rationalists and empiricists was resolved to some extent by Immanuel Kant, one of the most influential philosophers who ever lived. Kants theory was that empiricism and rationalism were both true in their own ways: he agreed with the empiricists when he said that all human knowledge comes from observation. This, he said, is in fact the way that people learn about the world. But our observations are also based on certain innate ways of reasoning; our brains are hard-wired to make certain conclusions from observation and reason further in certain ways. So, he also agreed with the rationalists that knowledge is determined by rationality. As you might expect, many constructivists can trace their lineage back to Kant.

In Civilization V, one of the social policy options is Rationalism. This social policy improves science output for your civilization and allows you to produce more Great Scientists. This makes sense since rationalism was so important in the early scientific revolution. However, the game illustrates rationalism with a picture of a scientist looking through a prism, presumably as part of an experiment. So the picture would fit better under the heading of empiricism rather than rationalism!

Vulcanians do not speculate. I speak from pure logic. (Spock, Star Trek)

Spock is the perfect rationalist. His powerful brain can compute logical probabilities faster than any human being, and he is not distracted by pesky emotions or personal biases (at least most of the time; he is half-human, after all). He is capable of incredible feats of logic, such as playing three-dimensional chess.

In Hong Kong, politics is inseparable from the art of filmmaking – Equal Times

Five years ago, filmmaker Zune Kwok made a dystopian film about a cabal of pro-Beijing politicians in Hong Kong who plotted the enactment of a dreaded national security law to crack down on pro-democracy activity in the former British colony. This, as it turns out, is an eerie case of art predicting life. Extras, a short story which forms part of the critically acclaimed 2015 anthology flick Ten Years, paints a bleak vision of Hong Kong in 2020. In reality, this is the very year Beijing imposed a draconian national security law on Hong Kong, a move that has shocked the world.

The coincidence is freaky. How should I put it? Im still digesting what is happening, the 35-year-old Hong Kong filmmaker says. When the film came out that year, some people said the plot was too exaggerated to be real. Others said it could happen. Now the law has arrived. Perhaps we filmmakers are a little more sensitive to whats going on around us.

The national security law, which came into force in Hong Kong on 30 June 2020, is widely seen as a political bombshell dropped by the Chinese government, apparently to restore order and stability following a months-long, sometimes violent, pro-democracy movement last year that plunged Hong Kong into its biggest crisis in decades. It is believed the legislation will deal a devastating blow to freedoms in the semi-autonomous Chinese city, an otherwise freewheeling financial hub whose sovereignty was returned to Communist China from Britain in 1997. Vaguely written, the law criminalises subversion, secession, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces, punishable by a maximum term of life imprisonment. It was fast-tracked by Beijing, which circumvented Hong Kongs elected legislature to push the enactment within merely several weeks.

Equally astonishingly, the law doesnt only cover Hongkongers: one clause specifies that it can be applied to anyone, including people who are not permanent Hong Kong residents and those who violate the law even when they are outside of Hong Kong.

Since the legislation came into effect, events in Hong Kong have been taking place at breakneck speed. In a mass protest on 1 July, just hours after the law was passed, over 370 people were arrested by police, including 10 for violating the new law with acts such as holding a Hong Kong independence flag. Public libraries removed books penned by pro-democracy activists. The rallying cry Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times!, heard at almost every protest over the past year, is now banned. Worried about breaching the sweeping legislation, some renowned writers have stopped publishing their long-time newspaper columns, and key opinion leaders and ordinary protesters have deleted their Twitter accounts. Many lawyers and academics now decline journalists interview requests about the legislation. An atmosphere of fear is pervasive.

Independent filmmakers like Kwok, however, have decided that despite the chilling effect of the law, fear has to take a back seat to art. They believe it is now more important than ever to speak up and tell Hong Kongs stories through their lens.

Today, everyone is seizing the first chance to push their own narratives of events in Hong Kong. The authorities for sure are doing that. Storytelling is powerful. This is a time when we should tell the Hong Kong stories, the director remarks. I cant pretend the law doesnt exist, but until something happens to me, I prefer doing what Ive been doing.

Chan Tze-woon, 33, another indie filmmaker currently shooting a film about Hongkongers from different generations fighting for freedom at different times, concurs. Around the time news broke of the law, I suddenly felt a strong creative urge. I turned down odd jobs and focused on filmmaking. We should make as many films about Hong Kong as possible. This is an important time in history. Miss these moments and your thoughts and feelings will not be the same later.

In recent years, a new crop of indie filmmakers have emerged in Hong Kongs struggling film industry, once celebrated as the Hollywood of the Far East. These creatives, some experienced and many others relatively young, have a penchant for making films in tune with the zeitgeist of contemporary Hong Kong and its history. This is a trend intimately linked with the wider political and social landscape of Hong Kong. Over the past two decades, as perceived encroachment by Beijing into the autonomy of this westernised city has become more real, a sense of local cultural identity has been growing among many Hongkongers. This sense was further reinforced in 2014 during the Umbrella Movement, a protest-occupation demanding greater political freedom, and in the 2019 anti-government protest movement, which was sparked by a controversial bill on extraditing Hong Kong fugitives to mainland China. All of this helped to lay the groundwork for the rise of local indie movies with a political and social relevance.

Usually made on a low budget and supported by a cast of C-list or amateur actors, these indie pictures tend to reflect, subtly or artfully, a desire for freedom and justice, as well as a critique of the unequal power relations between mainland China and Hong Kong. Themes include the demolition of a rural village to make way for a rail route linked to mainland China, the story of a young activist, and protesters-police clashes in the 2019 uprising. These stories are refreshing for local audiences who have had enough of Hong Kongs big-budget movies co-produced with mainland Chinese partners; its a business model that enables local filmmakers to access the lucrative Chinese market, but which comes with content restrictions that can make these films seem formulaic and detached from the reality of Hong Kong society.

Attention, applause and sometimes accolades come their way, but the path for these politically conscious films is rarely smooth.

While fundraising is a hard nut to crack for many filmmakers around the world, Hong Kongs indie directors face an extra challenge: they stand no chance with mainstream investors, many of whom have business ties or are associated with mainland China in some way and, therefore, would steer clear from politically charged projects.

Even after funding is secured and a whole project completed, getting an indie film to see the light of day is no straightforward matter.

Vincent Chui, 55, a veteran filmmaker and programme curator of the Hong Kong Independent Film Festival, says that ever since Ten Years high-profile success (it was named Best Film at the 2016 Hong Kong Film Awards) major cinemas have avoided screening films they consider to have sensitive content. Most indie films with a political dimension released after 2016 have barely made it to the big screen and have to rely on screenings at one or two arthouse cinemas and local community film events. Chans Yellowing, a 2016 documentary about Umbrella, was nominated for Best Documentary at the 53rd Taiwan Golden Horse Award. However, it was screened just four times, at a theatre funded by South Korean money.

These films have been approved by the authorities. Its not illegal to show them. But cinemas wont screen them. This genre has been pushed to the fringe, Chui explains. This is something we had been experiencing before the national security law. If anything, this law would only aggravate the self-censorship problem.

Those practising self-censorship are not confined to cinemas. Shortly before the law was enacted, a studio rented by an indie film crew cancelled the rental on the spot when some actors chanted the slogan Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times! as part of the script. Many showbiz figures are also walking on eggshells. Since Umbrella, Hong Kong actors and musicians vocally supportive of pro-democracy causes have been shunned by the mainstream entertainment industry, lost sponsorship deals, and have been blacklisted in mainland China in a sort of reverse McCarthyist witch-hunt. The suppressive atmosphere forces many celebrities to either keep quiet on even marginally social issues or loudly declare their pro-China position. Neither option favours indie film production.

Nevertheless, compared with their mainland Chinese counterparts, Hong Kongs indie filmmakers are in a relatively fortunate position. In January this year, the China Independent Film Festival, a leading festival of its kind in China, decided to shut down indefinitely after 17 years. The organiser said it was now impossible to host a movie festival in China with a purely independent spirit. Mainland directors, mainstream or offbeat, can find themselves in hot water if they cross certain unwritten red lines. For example, in 2006 acclaimed director Lou Ye was banned from making films for five years after shooting a feature that touched on the Tiananmen student movement in 1989.

Will Hong Kongs film sector meet a similar fate soon? Chan, who recently managed to raise half of the funds needed for his latest project through crowdfunding, is ever the optimist. He reckons while self-censorship will continue, there is still room for his films, and that from now on, politics is inseparable from the art of filmmaking in Hong Kong.

Nowadays you can hardly avoid Hong Kongs wider social or political context even when you make a romantic comedy. Foreign audiences may also expect to see something specifically Hong Kong from a Hong Kong movie, he says.

For Chui, it is rather tragic when a new movie genre is borne out of people fighting for freedom for their city. But for the sake of Hong Kongs film industry and the city as a whole, no filmmaker with a voice should tone down their stories despite the changing political climate, he emphasises.

Ive been in the industry for 30 years. Self-censorship is definitely not my way, Chui adds.

This resolve echoes veteran film producer Derek Yees subtle message when he announced Ten Years as the winner of Best Film at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2016. Addressing a star-studded audience, Yee said that prior to the award-giving ceremony, a young scriptwriter for the event sheepishly asked him if the script could mention the words ten years. Yee then told him: Young man, President Roosevelt once said: The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself.

Since the al-Qaeda terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the word terrorism in the United States has been nearly synonymous with a specific kind of terrorismSalafi jihadism. In other words, even though terrorism is politically and/or ideologically motivated violence, Americans and the U.S. government were almost wholly consumed by and narrowly focused on the threat posed by groups like al-Qaeda and the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), and concerned with those Americans living on U.S. soil who were motivated by these organizations to conduct attacks.

The focus on al-Qaeda and Salafi-jihadist more broadly was understandable, as the United States was caught off guard on 9/11, Americans were shocked and traumatized, and the nation subsequently mobilized to launch the (poorly named) Global War on Terrorism (GWOT). Less than three years after invading Afghanistan in an effort to destroy al-Qaeda and topple the Afghan Taliban, the United States invaded Iraq, overthrew Saddam Hussein, and soon became mired in a bloody counterinsurgency that gave rise to al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI), the predecessor organization of ISIS.

The United States scored some impressive victories fighting against transnational terrorist organizations. A relentless drone campaign decimated the ranks of al-Qaedas leadership. And a sustained, multilateral coalition helped to destroy the ISIS caliphate, although the group continues to rebuild itself as a decentralized network across swaths of Syria and Iraq.

[beautifulquote align="full" cite=""] The United States scored some impressive victories fighting against transnational terrorist organizations. A relentless drone campaign decimated the ranks of al-Qaedas leadership. And a sustained, multilateral coalition helped to destroy the ISIS caliphate, although the group continues to rebuild itself as a decentralized network across swaths of Syria and Iraq. [/beautifulquote]

Domestically, the United States was left to contend with attacks by violent extremists and Salafi-jihadists inspired by al-Qaeda and ISIS propaganda. In April 2013, two brothers learned to build bombs from al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsulas (AQAP) Inspire magazine and went on to attack the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring more than 264 others. In December 2015, a husband and wife pledged allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi before killing 14 people and injuring another 21 in San Bernardino, California. Approximately six months later, an individual pledged allegiance to Baghdadi before slaughtering 49 people and wounding dozens more in an attack on a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Several other attacks took place over the years, including a vehicle ramming attack in New York City that killed eight and injured eleven more. The perpetrator showed no remorse and gleefully flaunted his admiration for IS.

But as American citizens became fixated on the very real and difficult to counter threat from Salafi-jihadists, something else was happening in parallel. It was occurring against the backdrop of the GWOT and even though it was clearly terrorism, it was dismissed, overlooked, and explained away because it wasnt considered the real threat that Osama bin Laden had so ingrained on the psyche of the nation.

This other threat was that posed by far-right extremists, including violent white supremacists. At the so-called Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in August 2017, hundreds of torch-bearing white nationalists marched through the city in a show of force that surprised many Americans. During the protests and counter-protests, a neo-Nazi drove into a crowd of people and killed one, a young woman named Heather Heyer. In the aftermath of the melee, U.S. President Donald Trump drew sharp criticism for his portrayal of events, noting that there were very fine people, on both sides, after being pressed to condemn neo-Nazis and white supremacists. As terrorism expert Daniel Byman has noted, in the United States right-wing terrorism is potentially worse than other form, because it taps into broader political tensions and because Trumps reaction exacerbates the problems.

There were several other high-profile incidents involving far-right extremists, including a shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue by a white supremacist targeting Jewish worshippers in October 2018. That attack, which incidentally took place in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where the author lived for ten years (including at the time of the attack), left eleven dead and six more injured. An attack in El Paso, TX by a person targeted Hispanics killed 22 people and injured more than two dozen more.

Moreover, U.S.-based neo-Nazis and white supremacists maintain international connections to groups based overseas, including those in Scandinavia, Ukraine, and Russia, among other places. In April 2020, for the first time ever, the United States Department of State labeled the Russian Imperial Movement (RIM) as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist entity, slapping its leadership with sanctions. Other far-right extremists groups such as The Base, the Azov Battalion, or the Atomwaffen Division could be next to be sanctioned.

According to a recent report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), right-wing extremists were responsible for more than two-thirds of attacks and plots in the United States in 2019, and in roughly the first half of 2020 (up to early May), right-wing extremists have accounted for an estimated 90 percent of attacks and plots. When people ask the question, how did the United States finally come to recognize the threat posed by violent white supremacists and far-right extremists operating within its borders as terrorism, and not a local issue to be handled by law enforcement, the answer is: it became far too deadly for policymakers to ignore, try as they might.

Domestically, the terrorist threat posed by far-right extremists is perhaps more diverse than ever before, comprised of an eclectic mix of neo-Nazis, anti-government militias, and conspiracy theorists. The so-called Boogaloo Bois represent the new generation of domestic terrorism in the United States. Less a group than an ideology connected by a shared antipathy for law enforcement, there have been a number of attacks and plots by self-described members of this movement in the first half of 2020, and many of those arrested have ties to the U.S. military.

To its credit, to account for the changing nature of the threat posed to the U.S. homeland, the Department of Homeland Security created a new label for the threat posed by far right extremists and others motivated by race or ethnicity racially and ethnically motivated violent extremists, or REMVE. One commonly cited critique of the category is that it lumps together white supremacists with Black Identity extremists, including the so-called Black Israelites, and thus distorts the severity of the threat posed by the latter.

The COVID-19 crisis and coronavirus pandemic have been somewhat of an extremists buffet, offering groups across the ideological spectrum the opportunity to push propaganda and fit the crisis into their existing worldviews. White supremacy extremist groups in the United States have been actively recruiting new members during the pandemic, including members of increasingly younger ages.

The nationwide protests against police brutality in the wake of the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis, Minnesota police officer has reenergized the Black Lives Matter (BLM) Movement. Across the United States, BLM protests have been targeted by vehicle attacks, including an attack in Richmond, Virginia by the leader of a local Ku Klux Klan chapter. Discussions about banning the Confederate flag, renaming U.S. military bases long named after Confederate generals (e.g. Fort Bragg, Fort Hood), and removing statues and monuments tied to Americas racist history are almost certain to evoke a reaction from white supremacists who see the countrys political and cultural zeitgeist shifting and are desperate to prevent change.

Too often in the United States, the knee-jerk response to questions about what to do about neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and other far-right extremists (after all, the United States lacks an official domestic terrorism law) is what about Antifa? in reference to the decentralized collective of anti-fascist activists known for vandalism and the destruction of property. Sadly, President Trump and his allies have politicized the domestic terrorism debate, pushing for Antifa to be designated as a domestic terrorist group, while mostly remaining silent on the growing threat posed by violent far-right extremists.

What can the debate about terrorism the United States tell us, if anything about the debate elsewhere? Unfortunately, the lesson seems to be that when terrorism is perpetrated by the majority group against a minority (racial, religious, ethnic, etc.), for the issue to be properly recognized, it needs to become so large that its impossible to ignore. And that takes a long time and is no guarantee. A lot of people will die in the process and during that time, movements may congeal into more coherent groups and organizations, especially if there is a sense of tacit acceptance by the state.

Other countries including India that have been plagued by a particular type of terrorism should take heed. Focusing on one specific threat at the expense of others could result in the threat growing so severe that it can no longer be managed. Indeed, it is possible to consider all threats, rank them according to how dangerous they are, and begin taking the necessary measures to ensure that they do not threaten the lives of civilians and the stability of the nation.

What the Conservative Version of Cancel Culture Looks Like – The Bulwark

It is hard to think of a major sector of the culture-shaping industries and institutions of American lifeHollywood, news media, universities, arts, publishing, music, advertising, and so onthat isnt thoroughly absorbed into the intersectional zeitgeist of the American left. There are pockets of conservatism, of course, such as Fox News, talk radio, some publishers, and various online publications and communities. But for various reasons, they can neither balance nor meaningfully compete with the cultural and social throw-weight of progressivism and the left.

Given this imbalance, it is worth reflecting on how the right has chosen to exercise the cultural power it does have. Rather than securing the broadest possible coalition against the illiberal left, the right has decided to mimic the lefts strategies and tactics to conduct a purity campaign. In short, the right is canceling itself.

Earlier this month, I casually asked on Twitter whether the right has a cancel culture analogous to the left. My AEI colleague Stan Veuger dryly suggested checking out this weeks issue of the Weekly Standard for a symposium on the topic. Point taken: Lacking the muscle to compete in the mainstream of American life, the right cancels competing views and their adherents among fellow conservatives. You see the irony? While the left continues its long march through the institutions that guide cultural and social development, the right focuses on stamping out internal differences of opinion. One side steadily adds to and multiplies its influence while the other plays a game of subtraction and division against supposedly heterodox allies.

How did conservatives arrive at this point? The answer lies, I think, in the imbalance between conservative political success and its ongoing and pervasive cultural weakness. The coalition that came to power under Reagan was always far more successful at the ballot box than it was in the broader culture wars. Reaganism succeeded almost in spite of itself. Reagan himself understood this and actively discouraged internecine wars under the auspices of his 11th Commandment: Thou shalt not speak ill of another Republican. He knew lasting change required broad, strong, and occasionally even bipartisan coalitions. Victories were achieved by the steady application of political strength and sound governance; incremental advances could, over time, reshape society and politics.

Without the leavening influence of Reagans personality and political wisdom, however, his platform of smaller government, lower taxes, and stronger defense hardened into pledges and scorecards. Overreach, and the backlashes that accompany it, replaced three yards and a cloud of dust advances. These rigid ideological checks have come to serve as one of the primary mechanisms for internal GOP cancelation. Former senator Jim DeMinthimself eventually defenestrated at the Heritage Foundation as part of another intraconservative fightonce declared that hed prefer 30 Marco Rubios to 60 Arlen Specters in the Senate. His vision is taking shape: the creation of a zealous GOP minority.

What cancel conservatism didnt see coming was Donald Trump. As a completely transactional politician, Trump has been more than happy to become the avatar of longstanding Republican views. He accepted most GOP planks: tax cuts, increased defense budgets, outsourced but conservative judicial picks, and selective social conservatism. (On immigration and foreign policy, the Republican establishment long included a diversity of views.) Free trade has been Trumps one departure from orthodoxy, but it has mainly been a rhetorical one, marked by a spasmodic and ineffectual protectionism that seems to have succeeded mostly in inflicting pain on American producers and consumers. The price among Republicans for these policy victories has been the imposition of the ultimate cancel: an omerta as it relates to the erratic leadership and unsavory character and behavior of Donald Trump himself. All conservative interests, positions, policies, and fidelity measures have been collapsed into an oath of loyalty to Donald J. Trump.

Republican governing identity and support for Donald Trump are now one. People like Mark Sanford (a 93 percent voting record from Heritage Action) and Jeff Flake (85 percent) werent driven from public life over compromises on taxes, judges, or abortion but for active criticism of Donald Trump. Ben Sasse (83 percent) survived cancelation by moving to an undisclosed political location until he finished slogging nervously through his Republican primary. Even Jeff Sessions has been permanently canceled under the barrage of Trumps Twitter siege artillery in recompense for putting the rule of law above his loyalty to the president. And now, in the depths of todays pandemic, economic meltdown, and nationwide protests over police killings, the presidential personnel office is busily conducting loyalty stress-tests on the administrations own appointees that focus on personal commitment to Trump rather than any particular administration policy.

Which brings us to the peculiar case of Mitt Romney, the former GOP blue-state governor, presidential nominee, senator from Utah and bte noire of the Trumpist movement. Famously, he provided the lone Republican vote in either chamber for removing Trump from office during the impeachment proceedings. This brought down the full force of Trumpian cancel-power. Relatives have changed their names. CPAC, engaging in what the late, great Florence King might have called the height of WASP rage, made a point of announcing that it had not invited Romney this year on the theory that this constituted punishment rather than deliverance. Through this fire, Romney has emerged as the political equivalent of Harry Potter, the Boy Who Lived. The moral here is that if youre going to state the obvious about Trump, survival depends on having a couple hundred million dollars in the bank, a lifetime of personal achievement, great hair, and a tan of a shade that occurs in nature.

At the moment, polls are pointing toward a presidential wipeout and the possible loss of the GOP Senate majority. Suburban America, having already executed a volte-face in 2018, is withdrawing in horror from the GOP in 2020. Is this a rejection of lower taxes, a strong national defense, or a conservative federal bench? Not in the least. Its a verdict on the character, personality, behavior, and governing incompetence of President Trump. And as long as the GOP anchors its fortunes in Trumpian decadence rather than competent, philosophically coherent leadership, theres little chance of escape.

What the Conservative Version of Cancel Culture Looks Like - The Bulwark

Alanis Morissette: ‘Without therapy, I don’t think I’d still be here’ – The Guardian

In the video for her new single, Reasons I Drink, Alanis Morissette appears in a group addiction meeting. The song, set to stabbing piano, traces the difficulty of being in recovery when succumbing to addiction feels so freeing. Im such an addict, says the 46-year-old, Grammy-winning firebrand, howling down the phone from her home in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Morissette ticks off her top three addictions: Work addiction, love addiction and food addiction, she says. She traces her work addiction back to when I was single digits (she was always a driven performer), and her eating disorders to her teenage years and 20s, during which she was always yo-yo-ing. In the video, she portrays herself as multiple characters: a businesswoman; the 90s MTV star in the same scarf and hat she wore in the video for her biggest hit, Ironic; a mother; the chairperson holding space for others.

Recovery is a complex, lifelong endeavour, and lockdown has been triggering, says Morissette, who is juggling life at home as a mother of three with promoting her ninth album, Such Pretty Forks in the Road. At 3pm, I might feel: Wow, this is a huge gift, Im so overwhelmed with gratitude. By 3.15pm, Im raging. By 9pm, Im despondent. Isolation is the lighting of the match.

Medication has helped. Most recently she has been dealing with post-partum depression. Her youngest child, Winter, was born last August, a brother to her nine-year-old son, Ever, and three-year-old daughter, Onyx, her children with the rapper Souleye, whom she married in 2010. She has endured the condition after every birth. Previously, she delayed dealing with it; this time, she sought to expose it as it happened, appearing on TV after the birth to tell viewers it is like being covered in tar and underwater.

She also headed to the studio for the first time in eight years to record her new album. Songwriting is an exercise in letting the unconscious out, she says. I live my whole life, then I take 10 minutes to write the story of it. The songs are rooted in guitar and piano-based rock; sometimes anthemic (Smiling, Ablaze), often gentler and pensive (Diagnosis, Her). They are not as abrasive as her definitive early songs, but just as she travelled novel ground back then, foregrounding a young womans anger, she is still covering topics that rarely appear in mainstream rock. The song Nemesis documents the mental gymnastics she faced with an unplanned pregnancy. Im excited yet Im filled with despair, she sings. This metamorphosis closed the door and opened a window.

The album also tackles what Morissette terms financial abuse in the music business. In 2017, her former business manager was sentenced to six years in prison for stealing $7m (6m) from her, a violation that factors in the songs Pedestal (You grabbed my crown and got everything you wanted) and Reckoning (I hope you enjoy these drawings in your jail). They hark back to Right Through You, from her seminal third album Jagged Little Pill, particularly the oft-cited verse in which she addresses a man who took me out to wine dine, 69 me / But didnt hear a damn word I said.

Morissette has been singing about being leeched upon by men, economically and sexually, for 25 years. Thats the most depressing thing in the entire world, she admits, laughing. The themes of pain and division, trust, exploitation, misogyny, lack of integrity, sociopathic personality disorder and narcissism. These are themes I cut my teeth on as a child. To this day, she says, she is still healing from the theft, and from past sexual trauma that she doesnt detail. She feels she could still fall victim to abuse; it is a pattern she wants to break. She is disarmingly fluent in psychology, including the work of Carl Jung and more contemporary academics. If I didnt have a whole team of therapists throughout my life, I dont think Id still be here, she says.

Morissette is from Ontario and started a record label by the time she was 10. After a teenage pop career as the Debbie Gibson of Canada, she ran off to Los Angeles in 1995 and co-wrote the rockier Jagged Little Pill. No label would sign her, then Madonna imprint Maverick did. The album sold more than 33m copies worldwide, making her the youngest artist to achieve diamond-certified status in the US. She moved the needle but felt the drag. I couldnt even leave my hotel room, she says of the claustrophobic spotlight. If I walked by the window and my shadow hit the drapes, people would be screaming outside because they saw movement. She recalls fans rummaging through her room when she wasnt there. Theyd take my underwear. Theyd know it was under my pillow. It was invasive.

When Morissette appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone in November 1995, the magazine billed her as the Angry White Female. Then 21, her songs were misinterpreted as combative and pretentious in their fury. She recalls radio DJs looking at her entering stations like they thought I was gonna bite their heads off. Her success meant she was treated as an industry saviour, yet one manager shamed her for asking about money. Oh, youre one of those clients, he responded. Today, she stands her ground. Youre not gonna gaslight crazy-make me when Im on a journey of empowerment.

Two decades before a whimper of the #MeToo movement had even been heard, Morissettes voice allowed listeners to wail louder. But that also backfired as she became a vessel for others projections. If they had issues with an ex-girlfriend or unfinished stuff with their mom or a horrifying divorce, I became that person theyd show resistance to, she says. The discourse around her felt almost physical, as if it was being thrown at her. Even the solace she offered appreciative fans became burdensome to her. She equates the loss of anonymity to grief. I used to sit on park benches and watch people. But when I became the watched it was debilitating.

Her isolation deepened when she found herself pitted against other women. I was sold that fame would be a panacea to solve all problems, that Id be singing Kumbaya with my celebrity friends, she says. Morissette was rejected by her peers. I thought I was gonna phone Bjrk and Tori [Amos] and all of us were gonna love each other. I reached out to a lot of people. Often I was met with: Why are you calling me? She doesnt want to stoke division by naming names.

After Jagged Little Pill, Morissette returned to Canada to work on the follow-up, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, with the producer Tim Thorney. There, supermarket checkout staff would ask her when the album was coming. I wanted to cry, she says. I remember saying: I dont wanna make music any more. When Thorney replied, Sounds good! and took her for dinner, she returned to the studio feeling revived and began writing immediately: His freedom took the pressure away.

Released in 1998, that album debuted at No 1 in the US and broke first-week record sales by a female act, a record previously held by The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Yet the wave of unadulterated 90s female-fronted rock would soon be crushed by teen pop. By 2000, Britney Spears had broken Morissettes diamond record and almost tripled her sales. It was a relief. The white-hot heat of fame waned, which is what made everything OK, actually! she says. Fame is not a circumstance I want to sustain.

Not that Morissette disappeared. Her 2001 single Hands Clean from fifth album, Under Rug Swept, was an international hit, although her next single failed to match its success. She began acting, cropping up in Sex and the City and Curb Your Enthusiasm, and in the movie Dogma, in which she played God. She even had a short stint as an agony aunt for the Guardian. There has been a steady cultural reclamation of the kind of female anger that Morissette was vilified for in the 90s. Seven years in the making, a Broadway musical inspired by Jagged Little Pill has been a huge success. It includes a character who is raped at a high-school party and later gaslit over the experience. The actor Kathryn Gallagher recalls Morissette reminding her that the character was meant to be angry: The thing that Ive taken away from her in her guidance is the importance of feeling everything and going through every single emotion, even the sticky spots, she says.

Queer artists, including Halsey and Perfume Genius, have cited Morissettes importance in their own self-emancipation. This year, Morissettes 90s peer Fiona Apple similarly demonised as an angry girl back then received acclaim for a new album that delved into those formative industry traumas. Curiously, Morissette hasnt heard about it. Shes focused on her own efforts. Having my worth dictated by how relevant I am in the zeitgeist pop culture is a recipe for disaster, she says. I dont ride that rollercoaster.

Despite this cultural course correction, Morissette remains sceptical: she worries about the enduring vapidness that plagues the entertainment world and thinks its foolish to consider that talented women are favoured for reasons beyond marketability. The patriarchy only pays attention when theres a financial shift, she says. It became bankable to have a female artist so it was embraced, and then, off to the races! Yet she acknowledges that some things have improved. In the past, Morissettes desire to understand the human condition was a source of mockery by press and public. I used to feel like a freak in every room I was in, she says. Now I dont feel strange.

Such Pretty Forks in the Road is released by RCA on 31 July

Hip hops political evolution and the road ahead – REVOLT TV

The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of any other agency, organization, employer or company.

In 2017, Ta-Nehisi Coates released We Were Eight Years In Power: An American Tragedy, a collection of articles hed written for The Atlantic during the Obama Administration plus additional blog posts describing the point and process behind each piece. Its a hefty compilation, tackling weighty topics such as the Black family in an era of mass incarceration, why few Black people study the civil war, and the award-winning essay, The Case For Reparations.

The book opens with a quote from South Carolina Congressman Thomas Miller extolling Black achievements to the states constitutional convention in 1895. This was during the oppressive Redemption (Jim Crow) period that followed Reconstruction where, for the first time, the formerly enslaved were elected to government in the south.

We were eight years in power, Miller stated. We had built schoolhouses, established charitable institutions, built and maintained the penitentiary system, provided for the education of the deaf and dumb, rebuilt the ferries. In short, we had reconstructed the State and placed it upon the road to prosperity.

Miller hoped that by listing the success of Black lawmakers in South Carolina during Reconstruction, he would convince the legislature to decide against passing laws restricting the rights of Black citizens in the state. He was wrong. All achievements notched during Reconstruction were soon bastardized and remixed to fit the narrative of South Carolinas white dominant leadership. And the Jim Crow era took root.

Coates writes: Assessing Millers rebuttal and the 1895 convention, W.E.B. Du Bois made a sobering observation If there was one thing that South Carolina feared more than bad Negro government, it was good Negro government.

Its possible to draw parallels between Du Bois assessment of the South Carolina legislatures reaction to Millers speech and the way President Barack Obamas achievements continue to be attacked by his political adversaries. His signature bill, the Affordable Care Act, has been consistently dismantled in red states since its historic passing in 2010. In June 2020, while the country still struggles to wrangle control over COVID-19, President Trump once again asked the Supreme Court to invalidate the law, hoping to remove healthcare coverage from 20 million people during a pandemic and record-high unemployment. Trump also rolled back Dodd-Frank, another Obama era bill that added regulations designed to prevent Wall Street from causing another Great Recession, as it did while President George W. Bush was commander-in-chief. And despite assuming office in the wake of Dubyas catastrophe, despite adding 11.6 million jobs and returning the stock market to record highs, Obama still battles blame for causing the economic collapse that began two years before his inauguration. Toss in the racially motivated birther movement championed by President Trump and its not an intellectual leap to believe that in 2020, to paraphrase Du Bois, the only thing worse than a bad Black president is a good Black president.

HIP HOP RUNS FOR OFFICE

Kanye West recently announced that hes running for president, hoping to be the next Black man from Chicago to call the West Wing home. According to Forbes, Ye decided to run for office while reciting rhymes in the shower. He says hed run as a Republican if Trump decides to remove his name from the bill, and run as an Independent if he stays in the race. Kanye says he modeled his management approach off of Wakanda Black Panthers fictional homeland. He says hes cautious of vaccines because thats the mark of the beast. He says hes pro-life because hes following the word of the Bible, that he hasnt developed a foreign policy platform yet because he intends to focus on America first with our great military, that he was felt threatened as a Black man to join the Democratic party. Whether Kanyes aspirations are earnest remains to be seen. But, the prospect of a Black president followed by a reality show president followed by a billionaire Black president would be the oddest three chapters in White House history. Somewhere Jeezy is working on My President Is Black, Part 2.

Most political attention is laser focused on what happens in the Oval Office. But arguably, the power of government is harnessed most efficiently at local levels, and several from within Hip Hop have run for office hoping to represent their communities.

Wyclef Jean ran for president of Haiti in 2010, for example, but was removed from the ballot because of a provision that requires candidates for the presidency to have lived in the country for at least five years prior to their run was added to legislation. Clef was slaughtered in the press for attempting to challenge the decision.

In 2011, Uncle Luke ran for mayor of Miami with a focus on economic development, public safety, community revitalization and affordable housing. He came up short but still garnered 11% of the vote.

Former Bad Boy artist Shyne recently announced that hes running for the Belize House of Representatives under the United Democratic Party. Born Michael Levi Barrow, his father was the first Black prime minister of the country and his uncle, Honorable Michael Finnegan, currently serves in the governing body, but has decided against running for re-election. Shyne is hoping to assume his seat.

Former member of Lords Of The Underground, Dupre Doitall Kelly ran for Councilman-At-Large in Newark, NJ in 2018. He was inspired by a conversation he had with Tupac Shakur 20 years prior about correcting the negatives in their neighborhoods. His platform included a focus on improving education in his city. Unfortunately, he came up short, but he described the challenges running for office.

He previously told REVOLT, Man, this is not an easy task. It takes money, it takes people to contribute financially. But shout out to Redman, he supported, not just as my brother and someone whos been supportive of us. He supported financially. Naughty By Nature supported financially. Every member of the group. It was a couple of people who really did their thing and supported financially You cant jump into politics because you think youre popular. You have to do the groundwork, the footwork. You gotta put in the work with the residents.

THE ROAD AHEAD

Che Smith, also known as Rhymefest, ran for Chicago City Council in 2011 and came close to winning, falling short by 6 percentage points. When asked about his experiences campaigning, Smith tells REVOLT exclusively, When I ran for [Chicago] City Council, Lupe Fiasco came in and helped out. He did a fundraiser for me because Lupe comes from community organizing. A lot of hip hop comes from community organizing, but doesnt indulge in politics, which is more expansive than community organizing because its not just the community. If youre in city council, not only are you a part of a community, you are part of a vote for a city that has different interests.

Smith says part of the difficulty of running for office was that the lyrics to his songs were used against him on the campaign trail.

All my words that I ever wrote in rap came back to haunt me when I had to go speak to a 90-year-old lady that was like, So, what about your brand new b**ch? or Your brand new d**k, Fest says. He continues:

Running for office changed my perspective towards rap music because it made me realize a lot of things were saying just aint responsible. I realized things that we think are harmless in hip hop are really influencing people. And we try to use the word entertainment as a shield. We say, Well, what makes it different than what Arnold Schwarzenegger says? Well, we say were keeping it real. We affirm the realness of the entertainment, which reinforces structural racism. Rappers should be using the power of our voice to expand the electorate through how we talk about the platform. It should be a trend. It should be us saying thats what were on.

For much of hip hops history engaging in politics, the emphasis was on activism, grassroots community organizing, and donating to campaigns. Step. Repeat. Eazy-E, for example, found himself invited to a fundraiser for George H.W. Bushs campaign, creating one of the early 1990s biggest rap-related spectacles. KRS-One led the Stop The Violence Movement in the late 1980s in an attempt to quell violence in Black communities. He produced the song Self Destruction, which raised over $100,000 for the National Urban League. Diddy created the Citizen Change campaign in 2004, partnering with Mary J. Blige, 50 Cent, and Mariah Carey to bring voter awareness to young people and minorities. Artists ranging from Melly Mel to Ice Cube to Tupac to Killer Mike have engaged communities and politicians in their music and off wax, and the culture has directly produced a number of political candidates, few victors, and even fewer political action committees. There remains a gap between a willingness to get involved in politics and an ability to raise the funds necessary to spawn consistently successful campaigns.

Organizations like JAY-Z and Meek Mills Reform Alliance, which hopes to help over 1 million people falsely incarcerated escape the correctional system, represent a promising for hip hops future in the political sphere. Its an example of the community harnessing its power to enact change away from the ballot box. The same can be said for the recently announced #BreatheAct, which includes wildly progressive measures like defunding the police. The Breathe Act was assembled by a number of entertainment industry mavens and fashions itself as a modern-day civil rights bill, something absolutely crucial to forward progress.

The lingering question is this: Should the culture capture sweeping political power and reconstruct the current landscape, will it inevitably run into an ethos similar to that described by W.E.B. Dubois in 1895; an ethos similar to one currently attacking Former President Barack Obamas legacy? Will it wither in the shadow of revisionist history and systemic forces feeding off a disenfranchised populace often pushed past apathy?

I think every rapper with influence should have a local candidate that they support hard and know their policies. Rhymefest concludes. Hip hop has the ability to be kingmakers. Why do I know everything about Brooklyn, Harlem, Bronx and the differences in it? Rappers. Rappers can take that skillset of claiming their hood and really do that for our upliftment. Not just to [brag about gang life]. If we did that with policy, we could change everything.

A 55-Million-Year-Old Owl Skeleton Describes the Early Stages of Owl Evolution – HeritageDaily

Discoveries from the early stages of owl evolution are exceedingly rare. An approximately 60-million-year-old leg bone is the oldest fossil that can be assigned to an owl.

Other owls from this time period are also only known on the basis of individual bones and fragments. Therefore, I was especially pleased when I received a largely complete owl skeleton from the North American Willwood Formation for study, which my colleague and the studys co-author, Philip Gingerich, had discovered 30 years ago, explains Dr. Gerald Mayr of the Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum in Frankfurt, Germany.

The newly described animal belongs to a previously unknown, very large species of fossil owl. Except for the skull, all major bones of the 55-million-year-old bird are preserved. The fossil owl was about the size of a modern Snowy Owl. However, it is clearly distinguished from all extant species by the different size of its talons. While in present-day owls the talons on all toes are approximately the same size, the newly described species Primoptynx poliotauros has noticeably enlarged talons on its hind toe and second toe, explains Mayr.

These toe proportions are known from modern diurnal raptors, e.g., eagles and goshawks. These birds, which are not closely related to owls, pierce their prey with their sharp talons. Mayr and his colleagues therefore assume that the extinct owl also used its feet to kill its prey. By contrast, present-day owls use their beak to kill prey items thus, it appears that the lifestyle of this extinct owl clearly differed from that of its modern relatives, adds the ornithologist from Frankfurt.

Moreover, the new discovery reveals a high level of diversity among the owls of the early Eocene in North America from the small species Eostrix gulottai, measuring a mere 12 centimeters, to the newly discovered, roughly 60-centimeter-tall bird.

It is not clear why owls changed their hunting technique in the course of their evolution. However, we assume that it may be related to the spread of diurnal birds of prey in the late Eocene and early Oligocene, approximately 34 million years ago. Competition for prey with diurnal birds of prey may have triggered feeding specializations in owls, possibly also leading to these charismatic birds nocturnal habits, adds Mayr in closing.

The evolution of the first car: They’ve come a long way, baby – Bolivar Herald-Free Press

My first car was a powder blue Volkswagen bug, made sometime in the late 60s or early 70s. I dont remember the exact year. At the time my dad brought it home, it was 1987 and I was 14 years old with a drivers learning permit I could hardly wait to start using.

Dad said he got a good deal on the VW because the woman he bought it from was eager to see the old car go. Apparently, shed been driving it one day when a wasp flew up her skirt and stung her in the nether regions. (I can see how that kind of incident could create some bad feelings.)

But I didnt mind at all. From what I could see, the car was wasp-free and still cute as a bug literally. It was the car I learned to drive in, so I thought it was thrilling and perfect.

Looking back on it now, I can also tell you it was not at all fancy. Youve heard of a car being stripped down, right? This car was so stripped that it was practically streaking across town buck naked. Crank windows. No floor mats. Not even a tiny mirror on the inside flap of the sun visors.

The only option the car had that was somewhat of an upgrade was a little-known feature called automatic stick shift. What that meant was that the car had to be shifted into different gears, but there was no clutch pedal. The clutch engaged by pressing down on the gear shifter when it was time to shift. To this day, I know how to shift but I have no idea how to use a standard clutch, which basically means Im useless in anything except an automatic transmission.

Nevertheless, I still have a soft spot for that powder blue Volkswagen, and I hope its still out there somewhere, automatically shifting as it cruises a wide-open highway.

Ive thought about that first car a lot lately because Tom and I recently bought a first car for our middle son, who turned 16 during this weird pandemic. He had already lined up a part-time summer job before the pandemic began, so he needed a car to get himself there once he was old enough. Tom loves all things car-related, so he was more than happy to scour the Internet and the local car lots to find the right one.

We set a budget for the car something less than $25,000 and my only prerequisite was that it had to have as many safety features as we could afford. I didnt care if it was cool or not, as long as it received high safety ratings by the experts.

Tom and I were shocked at how far cars have come during our lifetime. We didnt go over the budget but still found a car with a great safety rating, wasp-free seats that heat and cool your behind, sensors that tell you when someone is in your blind spot, backup cameras, automatic-everything, plus Apple CarPlay, which means our teenager can use his voice to send a text without ever touching his phone. Is there anything cars cant do these days? Our sons first car is a far cry from the pale blue Bug I first drove, or Toms rusted out GMC pickup, which had an 8-track player and busted speakers.

I hope these kids know how good theyve got it. The only blind spot sensor I had in my first car was my dad, whod yell and smack me on the arm if I forgot to look over my shoulder when changing lanes. If I wanted my seats cooled, I had to crank down the windows and hope for snow.

It makes me wonder what might change by the time our kids start buying first cars for their kids. Maybe one day 30-something years from now, our son will say, You know, back in my day, we had to drive cars with wheels. We didnt have solar-powered hover crafts with facial recognition. And hell look back on his little Mazda with fondness for how simple things used to be.

Just be safe out there, kid. And check your blind spots.

REPORT: WWE more than likely to hold Evolution 2 this year – Wrestling News

There has been talk about WWE booking Evolution 2 although theres no date in place for it yet.

As of late, the rumor of it taking place would be the week after SummerSlam on August 30th.

Alex McCarthy reported on SportsKeeda that the company is exploring the possibility of Evolution 2. Per the report, the belief is that it would be an easy show to hold as they could run at the Performance Center and do it with low costs.

McCarthy noted that WWE has still considered going back to Saudi Arabia in order to fulfill their agreement before the end of the year.

If they do, it makes it even more likely that they would run Evolution 2 right after it, McCarthy wrote. WWE knows the goodwill the event brings with the fans and many inside the company feel running a second show is a no brainer.

WWE has yet to confirm the event, but since the first event, various wrestlers have talked about the desire to do another show. Based on the feedback from fans at the time, the first Evolution event was a big hit.

The first event took place on October 28, 2018, at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, in Uniondale, New York. The show was headlined by Nikki Bella vs. Ronda Rousey.

Just earlier this month it was rumored that WWE may have a major surprise planned with the debut of a big name who is on the free-agent market right now if the event does take place.

Following the Evolution of FROMTHEHEART, From Discord Server to AutoTuned Collective – bandcamp.com

FEATURES Following the Evolution of FROMTHEHEART, From Discord Server to AutoTuned Collective By Joshua Minsoo Kim July 27, 2020

Do you feel strength in me? Do you feel strengthin me? This repeated opening line from dust, the first track on FROMTHEHEARTs debut albumthings happen, its okay!, captures so much of the groups ethos and spirit. Its a simple phrase sung by FROMTHEHEARTs leader Valentine, but done with a vulnerability that pierces in its double meaning. It sounds as if shes speaking from a troubled place, asking for confirmation shes alive, but also as an offering of care to those she loves: Can you confide in her for your wellbeing?

Trust and compassion are crucial to FROMTHEHEARTs existence. The collectives members, of which there are more than 80, all converse and collaborate on a private Discord server and come from diverse backgrounds. When asked for essentials about the group, Moore Kismet half-jokingly comments that its mostly queer, an assessment that the others quickly chime in and confirm. Kismet sincerely follows up by saying, I feel so safe with all of my fellow gays. Throughout the album, lyrics touch on being content with ones identity and self, whether its Valentine singing You cant tell me who I am on dust, or Fraxiom reflecting on how they wasted years of [their] life overthinking bout how everybody gonna look at [them] on 5T4YTRU.

The group finds its roots in a 4th of July party that some members had in Los Angeles last year, deciding afterwards to make a Discord server to continue communication. Its there that they began work on MIDWESTEMO2, a track with blown-out trap percussion, AutoTuned rapping, and a half-time chopped and screwed-like outro. As with the rest of the album, its hodgepodged, genre-blending sensibilities resemble 100 gecs, albeit streamlined into more straightforward pop songs. And while 100 gecs culls musical ideas from the past two decades, FROMTHEHEARTs music seems decidedly 2010s: James Blakes introspective production and songwriting, emo revival but especially emo rap, various strains of pop and electronic music popular on SoundCloud.

By listening to their music or just looking at the track creditsthe album boasts 10 features across eight songsthe collaborative nature of FROMTHEHEART is immediately evident. Their community ethos was only made possible through the cultivation a safe space for their members, many of whom are teenagers and queer, on their private Discord server. In the discussion, many were quick to acknowledge and share stories about how IRL spaces felt unwelcoming due to members sexuality, gender, age, and race.

Despite the members coming from various backgroundsfrom DIY and chiptune to EDM and emothey largely felt unsupported in their creative endeavors. Robyn Kim, who works under the name HOLIDAYKISS, says that one of their main goals for being in FROMTHEHEART is to create the scene i want to see in my life and have it positively impact others [] to cultivate a fanbase and a music scene thatismore accepting. To ensure all this, though, theres the unavoidable reality that those damaging to the space are quickly kicked out. While the decision to do so may be uncomfortable and has happened multiple times already, Valentine says that making sure to take action when necessary just makes us stronger.

Naturally, with so many members, it can be hard to imagine the logistics of the entire enterprise: How exactly does the music end up the way it is? For Lunamatic, its ultimately Valentine who spearheads it all: She has a really specific vision in mind for the project and is really able to smoothly integrate all of our ideas. On BiG KIDS, which features credits from six different artists, theres a beautiful cohesion to the Taylor Swift interpolations, which transform a chipper rap song into something decidedly pop rock. Like the rest of the album, nothing feels out of place.

Despite Valentines role in leading the group, she says shes been creat[ing] more opportunities for other people to drive the bus, such as weekly meetings. A schedule has fallen into place, as well: on Tuesdays there are beat challenges; Thursdays are for working on FROMTHEHEART; and Saturdays are when members can share solo work and get detailed, constructive feedback from each other. On the day we caught up with the group, the beat challenge they had involved sampling sounds from themelodybot3456 Twitter accountyou can tell theyre a fun and motivated bunch. On the moody and plaintive stuck!, Valentine cries out, Think its bout damn time for me to shine. When she sings it, it sounds like shes singing both for herself and everyone else in FROMTHEHEART. Theyre more than just musicians working together: theyre a group of friends, a loving community, a much-needed support network.
