The countries that come out of this better will be the disciplined countries, Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said in what many took as a dig at President Trumps widely condemned pandemic leadership. Countries and people who do not follow sensible public health advice will have more deaths, sickness and chaos.

The leader of one of the small, poor and predominantly Black island nations Trump likes to call shitholes is reminding us the world considers Trumps America an epidemiological sinkhole a place where public health discipline disappears.

It was especially notable coming from Minnis and especially as we near the dangerous days of the hurricane season. After Hurricane Dorian destroyed the northern Bahamas last September, Trump made a political base-pleasing point of denying Bahamians escaping the devastation a customary visa waiver. They could have entered the U.S. temporarily to recover and regroup but it was too risky, Trump insisted. In racist Trumpese, he said too many refugees might be very bad people and some very bad gang members and some very, very bad drug dealers.

In one instance, Trumps edict got more than 100 Bahamian evacuees, including children, booted off a ferry boat headed for Florida in the days after the deadly storm, when food and fresh water were scarce.

That insult stung Bahamians more because by then, they and everyone else in the Caribbean were all too aware of why the hurricanes slamming them today are bigger and stronger. Scientists say the reason is climate change global warming caused largely by the greenhouse carbon belched into the atmosphere not by small, poor and predominantly Black island nations like theirs, but by large, rich and industrialized countries like the U.S.

A few days after Dorian ravaged The Bahamas, I toured Grand Bahama island with a local Anglican pastor named Father Stephen Grant. He showed me not just the destruction but several examples of how monsters like the near-record storm surge could have been mitigated. Sites, for example, where watershed construction would make a difference.

It can be done, Grant told me as we stood outside a house where storm surge had claimed the lives of a family trapped in the attic. But we need help from the countries like yours that bear a certain responsibility for this new kind of storm phenomenon.

Minnis said much the same thing to CBS 60 Minutes a few months later when he showcased the infrastructure changes The Bahamas is pursuing, like solar-powered energy microgrids, to make its vulnerable islands more storm-resilient.

We cannot afford italone, Minnis said, adding, First World nations should contribute because they make the greatest contribution to climate change.

VERY INFECTIOUS PEOPLE

Now Minnis is saying, as he indefinitely bars U.S. commercial flights and ships from entering The Bahamas, that the First World nation next door presents the greatest threat of COVID-19 transmission. I doubt anyone but Trump and MAGA World would have objected if the Prime Minister had also remarked that too many American tourists might be very infectious people, very infectious mask-rejecting gang members and some very, very infectious hydroxychloroquine dealers.

In fact, given the surreal corona-chaos were witnessing in U.S. hotspots like Florida, Minnis actually would have been justified tossing in a jibe like that as opposed to the bogus, bad-hombre aspersions Trump cast on Bahamians whod just had their homes razed by 200-mph winds.

Minnis has reason to be nervous. Yes, The Bahamas has a population of fewer than 400,000 and has recorded fewer than 200 COVID-19 cases. But more than a quarter of those infections were registered since just last Saturday. Thats the kind of spike that, given this pandemics insidious history, prods responsible heads of state to take measures like putting Grand Bahama under a two-week lockdown, as Minnis also did this week.

What the Bahamas cant do is ban the effects of Americas carbon emissions or make the U.S. share the cost of hurricane defense. But it can ban contagious Americans. And deliver Trump a little well deserved payback along the way.

When Evers Beck was 10, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Two years later, Make-A-Wish Greater Virginia sent him and his family to Japan, where they visited Mount Fuji, took sushi-making classes and traveled on the worlds fastest high-speed train.

When Evers Beck was 10 years old, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and qualified for a wish through Make-A-Wish Greater Virginia.

Two years later, in 2017, he took a break from his chemotherapy treatments and boarded a plane to Japan.

I didnt really know much about Make-A-Wish other than what youd see on the news, said his mother, Joey Beck of Roanoke. So I was like, my sons not dying, were not applying.

But eventually the Beck family was persuaded. Beck said her son loves Pokmon, sushi and anime, so Japan was the perfect trip.

Evers is 15 now, and although the tumor is still there and is being monitored, he has been off of treatment for three years.

He had a huge boost and it was a nice break for us, for the whole family, his mother said.

But his wish trip wouldnt be possible today.

Make-A-Wish Greater Virginia has paused travel wishes, and anything else that involves a social gathering due to COVID-19 health concerns. The nonprofit organization, which serves critically ill children throughout the state except for counties and cities surrounding Washington, normally sees that about 80% of its wishes involve travel every year, said CEO Sheri Lambert.

Right now, none of those are being granted. Lambert said that families planning to go on trips have been asked to re-imagine their wishes.

Caught in the act: Microscopy reveals key detail in retrovirus replication – Penn State News

HERSHEY, Pa. A protein that is critical for retrovirus replication may select viral genetic material for packaging within the nuclei of host cells, rather than in the cytoplasm, as was previously believed. The research, led by a team at Penn State College of Medicine, could have implications for the development of therapeutics that target this protein.

Retroviruses are a type of virus that use cells asmachines to make more virus particles that are spread fromcell to cell. There are three major infectious human retroviruses, including human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1), the cause of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The lab of Dr. Leslie Parent, vice dean for research and graduate studies and professor of medicine, studies the avian retrovirus Rous sarcoma virus, which replicates similarly to HIV and causes tumors in domestic fowl.

Their research focuses on the role of a special protein called Gag that acts as an escort for genetic material in viral replication. It forms a complex by binding to the viral ribonucleic acid (RNA) to package it into an infectious virus particle. According to Parent, a professor of medicine and microbiology and immunology, their latest discovery puts scientists one step closer to developing therapeutics that can stop this complex from forming.

Our primary goal has been to understand where the initial interaction between the Gag protein and viral RNA occurs, said Parent. Other drugs and approaches have targeted viral replication after these complexes form. Our hope is that if we can better understand this interaction, early intervention strategies could be developed.

For years, scientists who studied retroviruses believed that Gag protein and viral RNA interacted only in the cytoplasm of the cell. But prior work by the Parent lab revealed that Gag proteins entered the nucleus of the cell as well. Based on that finding, they hypothesized that Gag protein might select viral RNA for packaging in the nucleus, where the RNA is made.

With so much activity going on in a cell, Parent and her colleagues put fluorescent "labels" on the Gag protein and viral RNA so they could watch their interactions in live cells using confocal microscopy. The images and videos of this process were captured and published with their data in mBio, a journal of The American Society for Microbiology.

As they hypothesized, they observed that Gag does bind viral RNA in the nucleus, and the complex traffics out of the nucleus. They propose that the viral Gag-RNA complex ultimately travels to the outer membrane of the cell where the viral particle is released to infect new cells. According to Parent, advances in technology have made this finding possible.

Visualizing a live cell in real time allows you see the intricate dynamics of its functions, Parent said. She noted the College of Medicines core facilities, including leading-edge live-cell microscopy, were integral to carrying out this project that has been years in the making. When you observe a cell over time, you can see the start, end and speed of various processes. It allows you to witness how a live cell deals with a viral infection.

Rebecca Kaddis Maldonado and Breanna Rice, postdoctoral scholars at the College of Medicine and coauthors on the publication, said knowing that Gag protein selects viral RNA in the nucleus opens up more questions that will be explored in future studies. They want to understand more about the kinetics of the interaction between Gag protein and viral RNA in the nucleus, mechanisms for how the complex moves outside the nucleus, and what other elements of the host cell may play a role in the process.

This observation is just the first of a series of investigations we need to carry out in order to understand this interaction, Maldonado said. The more we know about the details of this process, the better suited well be to propose or develop therapeutic targets.

SALT LAKE CITY, July 29, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Myriad Genetics, Inc. (NASDAQ: MYGN), a leader in molecular diagnostics and precision medicine, announced today that the company has launched its proprietary AMPLIFY technology, which further increases the performance of its Prequel noninvasive prenatal screening (NIPS) test. The proprietary AMPLIFY process increases the fetal fraction of a NIPS sample by preferentially sequencing the fetal cell-free DNA fragments that circulate in a mothers blood. AMPLIFY technology enables more accurate detection of fetal chromosome abnormalities. In the analytical validation involving samples from more than 1,000 pregnant women, fetal fraction is 2.3 times greater on average with AMPLIFY than with standard NIPS. This improvement reduces false positive and false negative resultsincluding for common aneuploidies, expanded aneuploidies, microdeletions and a babys sex. For instance, false negative performance in common aneuploidies improves 45x with AMPLIFY technology. Additionally, no samples powered by AMPLIFY technology had a fetal fraction below four percent. Other laboratories may fail samples with less than four percent fetal fraction.

UConn Researchers Collaborate with Ovid Therapeutics on Genetic Therapy for Angelman Syndrome – UConn Today

Angelman syndrome, a rare genetic condition, has been a central focus of UConn researcher Stormy Chamberlains career for over a decade. Since 2009, Chamberlain has been using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) in her lab at UConn Health to study human imprinting disorders that could lead to a cure.

Through a newly announced exclusive licensing agreement and research collaboration, Chamberlain and fellow UConn School of Medicine researcher Noelle Germain are now working with biopharmaceutical company Ovid Therapeutics Inc. on a promising genetic therapy.

Angelman syndrome affects approximately 1 in 12,000 to 1 in 20,000 people globally, and there are currently no approved therapies. People with Angelman syndrome experience developmental delays, have trouble walking or balancing, and are prone to seizures. They also have limited speech abilities, despite a tendency to laugh, smile, and have a happy demeanor. Individuals with Angelman syndrome typically have normal lifespans but are unable to live independently and require constant care from family or caregivers.

Current treatment options primarily consist of behavioral interventions and pharmacologic management of symptoms. Chamberlain and Ovid hope to provide more options to patients with Angelman through their strategic research collaboration.

Angelman syndrome occurs when a single gene inherited from a mothers 15th chromosome is deleted or inactive. The paternal copy of that gene, known as ubiquitin protein ligase E3A or UBE3A, is normally silenced in brain cells by UBE3A-antisense, a regulatory RNA.

Through the research collaboration and license agreement, Chamberlain, Germain, and Ovid will work to accelerate the development of a next-generation short hairpin RNA (shRNA)-based therapeutic for Angelman syndrome. An shRNA-based therapeutic may address the underlying genetic cause of Angelman syndrome by reducing the expression of UBE3A-antisense and restoring the function of UBE3A. This genetic approach may be used in combination with OV101 (gaboxadol), Ovids novel therapy. OV101 is currently in clinical development for the treatment of Angelman syndrome and Fragile X syndrome. Topline results in Angelman syndrome are expected at the end of 2020.

An shRNA therapeutic can target the genetic cause of Angelman syndrome at its source and may offer potential advantages to other next-generation approaches, says Chamberlain. Ovid is uniquely positioned to accelerate an shRNA therapeutic through late preclinical and clinical development, and our lab looks forward to working with the team at Ovid towards our common objective of impacting the lives of individuals living with Angelman syndrome and their families.

While Ovid and the UConn research team are hopeful that OV101 will serve as a core therapy for this Angelman syndrome, the collaboration will also grow the research pipeline for the future to ensure new therapies for individuals living with Angelman syndrome.

Dr. Florence Haseltines resume is robust, if not intimidating: She has attended and taught at world-renowned universities, and received awards for championing womens health and advocating for womens rights. Most recently, she transformed the North Texas Genome Center at the University of Texas at Arlington into a COVID-19 testing facility for students.

Haseltine, 77, leveraged her personal connections, built on 27 years of working at the national level, to make sure that the center has the supplies necessary for testing. And that will promote her aspirations for the center: to study why the novel coronavirus appears to affect men more than women.

From a young age, she was determinedly curious about the differences between men and women. I kept asking my father, who was a scientist, why there are two sexes, and he tried hard to explain it, she said. I kept bugging him so much that finally one day he threw up his arms and said, When you grow up, you figure it out.

Haseltines career has centered on this question she asked her dad. After studying at the University of California at Berkeley and MIT, and getting her M.D. from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, she trained as a reproductive endocrinologist and researched in vitro fertilization at Yale University. Her work helped couples struggling to have children. The Yale Fertility Center was one of the first clinics in the U.S. to offer in vitro fertilization.

In 1985, Haseltine became the Director of the Center for Population Research at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development at the National Institutes of Health. Working there for nearly three decades, she helped increase federal funding for womens health research.

In 2018, a few years after Haseltines retirement, the president of UT-Arlington recruited her as a faculty member. The prospect of studying the human genome, or all of our genetic material, seemed like a perfect reason for her to return to academia.

Her career was influenced by her younger brother, William Haseltine. He developed some of the methodologies and technology used in genomics research as the founder of the biotechnology company Human Genome Sciences. It was clear if I was to make a second jump [in academia], it would be into the genome, she said.

When Haseltine first came to UT-Arlington, she planned to study why certain diseases affect men and women differently, and why, in some cases, one sex might suffer from more severe symptoms.

She thought that it might be due to differences between the sexes when it comes to some genetic information that determines our immune response. In particular, she wants to investigate a group of genes called human leukocyte antigens, or HLA.

HLA genes serve as an early warning for the immune system. These genes provide pieces of proteins made by foreign invaders, like a virus, to specialized immune cells that can then fight and eliminate the pathogen.

To proceed with the research, the North Texas Genome Center needed federal certification for processing human samples to diagnose, prevent and treat diseases. Last summer, Haseltine brought Anajane Smith, a researcher who studied HLA genes in Seattle, out of her own retirement to help the center get certified.

Haseltine knew Smith since the age of 6. They parted ways after college when she took a job on the East Coast and Smith took a position on the West Coast. Even after all this time, Smith jumped in to help when Haseltine needed her expertise.

With Smiths guidance, the North Texas Genome Centers officials got their required certification in January. Then the pandemic struck Texas and the university encouraged the centers director, Jon Weidanz, to shift the centers focus to testing for COVID-19.

Through personal relationships, Haseltine got the supplies necessary to test for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. She reached out to Dr. Mary Lake Polan, whom she had mentored at Yale University in 1975.

She has the ability to deal with people, so that, as focused as she is, she doesnt put them off, said Polan. They want to help her.

Polan is a board member of Quidel Corporation, a company that makes diagnostic healthcare products. Haseltine was able to get one of the companys SARS-CoV-2 assays or products that analyze COVID-19 tests the day that the assay was approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

Then she needed to make sure that the assays worked with the UT-Arlington centers equipment. She needed the genetic material, or the RNA, of SARS-CoV-2 to test the assays.

She contacted Scott Weaver, a colleague from the Global Virus Network, an international coalition of scientists dedicated to managing viral diseases.

Weaver, director of the Institute for Human Infections & Immunity at the University of Texas Medical Branch, gave Haseltine some SARS-CoV-2 RNA from the universitys World Reference Center on Emerging Viruses and Arboviruses.

With Haseltines help, staff at the North Texas Genome Center recently ran their first successful assays. Staff started processing tests from student athletes this month, and will continue to do so every four weeks thereafter. Other students can be tested after they return to campus if they show symptoms. And students will have no out-of-pocket costs for testing, according to a UT-Arlington spokesperson.

Haseltine now has the opportunity to join other members of the scientific community in studying why SARS-CoV-2 seems to affect men more than women. Haseltine and Weidanz have a hunch that certain forms of some HLA genes could offer a protective role against COVID-19 in women.

Science can be an incredibly competitive field. So the amount of cooperation by scientists to work together and fight COVID-19 stunned many, including Haseltine. Ive had a lot of people help me in my life, but Ive never seen this level of cooperation, she said. Everybody wants to do whatever they can.

Mandatory activation conditions for social-assistance recipients should be suspended during the pandemic.

Whether activation policies can foster labour-market integration and, at the same time, protect individuals from poverty is doubtful. Pressing citizens into precarious occupation may lead to in-work poverty or lack of employment rights, while they risk losing their right to a minimum income due to the increasing conditionality of activation.

These concerns are even more compelling amid socio-economic transformations and downturns, such as that caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, when available occupations are scarce and harder to secure, especially for vulnerable groups.

With additional redundancies and rising unemployment, there are fewer jobs to go back to and competition for them may intensify, especially for social-assistance recipients with weaker labour-market histories and health, social and household challenges. In this context, putting pressure on claimants through work conditionality and sanctions, to integrate quickly into the labour market by accepting any job, including workfare, may not only harm recipients wellbeing and income protection but also put wages and working conditions generally under added strain.

It would seem logical to reduce work-related benefit conditionality when unemployment rises, to avoid negative repercussions on citizens and the wider workforce when labour demand is low. Yet in the economic crisis following the 2008 financial collapse, not only did governments not reduce conditionality for social-assistance recipientssome even intensified it.

In a scenario where vulnerable individuals in particular are unable to secure quality, sustainable employment, social and employment services could suspend work-related conditionality and devote their efforts to providing support. Removing the threat of sanction would mean continuing to promote social and labour-market integration through enabling services, provided on a consensual basis.

Resources previously devoted to the administration of work-related conditions could be redirected towards personalised support. This would prioritise individuals needs, aspirations and wellbeingincluding social dimensions such as decent housing, improved health and informal careand support sustainable labour-market integration in the longer-term, while guaranteeing a minimum income meantime.

Such personalised support could assist training, entry into subsidised/socially-useful work and voluntary activity. Longer-term and sustainable activation strategies, addressing the complex needs of vulnerable individuals, would support them to face societal and labour-market transformations, boost their trust in government and allow them to contribute to society in multiple ways.

Suspending the punitive aspect of mandatory activation is not only a matter of efficiency but, first and foremost, equity. Such obligations rest on two assumptions: that individuals are not willing to work and yet that quality employment is available. When sustainable jobs are few, they merely serve a punitive function.

Going one step further, recent policy experiments (such as the Finnish basic income trial) have investigated the implications of removing work-related obligations and sanctions, thus leaving participation in social and employment services voluntary. Findings show that receiving financial support without the pressure of work-related conditions leads recipients to greater wellbeing (sense of autonomy, security, mental health) and more general interpersonal trust, with no negative repercussions on employment.

The current situation lends itself to additional experimentation in this regard. Minimum-income schemes have to be strengthened and behavioural conditionality revoked if we want to avoid the risk that a health and economic crisis turns into a social crisis too.

The early days of blockchain were like the gold rush of the Wild West. We bore witness to a surge of investor money finding its way into the hands of cowboy founders of less-than-scrupulous, blockchain-based business ideas. Indeed, there have been almost 2,000 cryptocurrency projects in total, but only a few dozen are worth mentioning.

What we are left with today is a smaller number of more serious blockchain projects that have real-world use cases that go beyond cryptocurrency. Blockchain is, and always has been, much more than just a get-rich-quick scheme.

Blockchain is the underlying technology upon which cryptocurrencies are built. But to limit a definition of its capabilities to such a function is to overlook its extraordinary potential and wide-reaching application.

For obvious reasons, a recent area of interest in the power of blockchain, and other innovative technology, lies in our health systems. When Innovate UK (the government innovation agency) announced a series of grants to fund potential projects to address the Covid-19 crisis, they received over 8,000 applications in a matter of days, of which less than 10% were awarded. And this is just the tip of the iceberg, as various government bodies receive thousands of innovative pitches on a weekly basis, all claiming to improve efficiencies and reduce costs.

Many of the solutions likely pertained to blockchain elements, and some may even have been good, but the Covid-19 outbreak made it extremely difficult for authorities to filter through the noise and effectively gauge the potential of such an array of different projects.

Lets forget for a minute about the exceptional aspects of Covid-19 and try to approach it the same way we would any other challenge. We can clearly see that the reason why blockchain applications might fail to solve certain Covid challenges is for the same reason that has happened in the past whenever weve had a desperate search for a problem to solve. Many are waiving a blockchain-shaped magic wand in the air and hoping it will fix the issue somehow.

Instead, lets take a step back and look at two challenges created by Covid, and where those match the unique use cases created by blockchains unique value proposition.

Covid-19 has revealed the weaknesses of global supply chains with countless reports of PPE issues, a lack of food in impoverished areas, and a breakdown of business-as-normal, even in places where demand has remained constant.

Trust has always been the keystone of trade. But how can you trust supply chain partners to deliver in times of widespread failure? Owing to its decentralised nature, blockchain-based applications create a transparent ecosystem when you trust and see that the mechanisms in place are fair to all. It can provide instant overviews of entire supply chains to highlight issues as soon as they arrive. Whats more, it is possible to implement live failsafes with smart contracts that can ensure the smooth continuation of the supply chain and remove the very need for trust in the first place.

To this end, the World Economic Forum developed the Blockchain Deployment Toolkit, a set of high-level guidelines to help companies implement best practices across blockchain projects especially those helping solve supply chain issues. They worked with more than 100 organisations for more than a year, delving into 40 different blockchain use cases, including traceability and automation, to help guide organisations in their efforts to solve real-world problems with blockchain.

There is an economic and social need to re-open society in a way thats safe for everyone. But how can organisers re-open high-density venues while reducing the risk of creating new Covid clusters?

Most proposed solutions focus on gathering the personal data of attendees, which has the fatal flaw of deep GDPR-related challenges, as well as many other security issues. A popular proposal that gained a lot of traction in the media was to use health status certificates.

A health status certificate is a way to prove to others, at work and in public, that you are not a danger to public health, and that is where it should stop. The underlying reason should not matter; not whether youve already had the contagion and recovered, whether youve been vaccinated once it becomes available, or whether youre showing no symptoms on the day. The blockchain application of an old cryptographic concept called Zero-Knowledge Proof happens to be extremely relevant for the use case of proving health status while maintaining data privacy and security.

Whats more, the World Health Organisation has warned against the creation of health status certificate initiatives that could potentially create a series of new issues that the right technology could address, such as discrimination, for example, if immunity were to become provable. While the technology exists to help, questions remain over the ethics of its implementation in this context.

The task at hand is definitely greater than any weve seen so far. But if history has proven anything, it is that a major crisis is always fertile ground for innovation. Maybe blockchain wont be able to do anything immediately to tackle the Covid crisis itself, but there is no doubt that it will play an innovative role in solving a number of the wider challenges it has raised.

Chainalysis Widens Access to Its Blockchain and Crypto Certification Program – Cointelegraph

New York-based blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis is extending access to its certification program in crypto fundamentals to the wider professional community.

Announced on July 23, the company said that its Chainalysis Cryptocurrency Fundamentals Certification (CCFC) would from now on be open to professionals in the financial services sector, government employees and the wider enterprise community.

Previously, the course had been limited to clients using Chainalysis investigations and compliance products.

As one of the higher-profile analytics firms in the blockchain intelligence industry, Chainalysis develops investigative tools that enable firms, governments and law enforcement agencies to monitor blockchain transactions and track suspected illicit activities.

The CCFC program has been designed to provide participants with an industry credential and give them a foundational knowledge of cryptocurrency technology, an understanding of key stakeholders in the field, use cases and the functions of cryptocurrency in relation to the traditional financial system.

The CCFC course offers two days of training web-based for now due to the coronavirus that are centered on group discussions, practical exercises and case studies. Anyone is eligible to apply, and those who complete the course receive a two-year CCFC credential, provided both as a digital certificate and LinkedIn badge.

Tim Simpson, a compliance analyst at Bittrex crypto exchange, said:

The majority of individuals do not have the time or technical expertise to filter through the endless amount of information about cryptocurrency to focus on what matters. For individuals with a non-technical background or those needing to become quickly up-to-date on how cryptocurrency really works, the CCFC course provides a focused, well-organized and active learning experience.

Jason Bonds, chief revenue officer at Chainalysis said that as crypto and blockchain enter the mainstream, the course is intended to spread a thorough understanding of the technology that will be crucial for its safe and successful adoption.

As previously reported, many higher education institutions globally have launched their own internal blockchain laboratories, research centers and degree programs and certificates including MIT in the U.S. and the IT University of Copenhagen.

Last year, the French Ministry of National Education announced plans to integrate an educational module into its high school curriculum covering Bitcoin (BTC) and cryptocurrencies.

Ripple has also continued to add partners in its global University Blockchain Research Initiative, including universities from the United States, China, Singapore and Brazil.

Within the venture capital sector, Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) has offered a free, seven-week crypto startup school to provide guidance in areas such as product and technology design and legal/regulatory best practices.

This year, the Africa Blockchain Institute planned to open Rwandas first blockchain school, offering five new courses for local developers, professionals and policymakers.

NASA announces astronauts for second SpaceX Crew Dragon flight to International Space Station – Fox News

NASA announced on Tuesday the astronauts who will fly aboard the SpaceX Crew-2 mission to the International Space Station next spring.

Two of the astronauts are American: Shane Kimbrough and Megan McArthur. Akihiko Hoshide is from Japans Aerospace Exploration Agency, and Thomas Pesquet, of France, is from the European Space Agency (ESA).

SpaceX made history at the end of May when it launched NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken toward the ISS on the SpaceX Demo-2 test flight mission the first time astronauts blasted off from American soil since the end of the space shuttle program almost a decade ago.

That SpaceX Crew Dragon flight was the first time a private company, rather than a government, sent astronauts into orbit. They are scheduled to return to Earth on Sunday.

Behnken, who commanded the Demo-2 mission, is married to McArthur, who will pilot the Crew-2 mission. In between, there is also a Crew-1 mission scheduled to launch in late September.

McArthur, who was born in Hawaii but calls California her home state, has one prior trip to space under her belt, according to NASA. She launched with the space shuttle Atlantis on a mission to the Hubble Space Telescope in 2009.

SPACEX SPACECRAFT DOCKS WITH INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION ON HISTORIC NASA MISSION

Kimbrough, a retired Army colonel born in Texas and raised in Atlanta, will be the missions spacecraft commander. It will be his third trip to space and second long-term stay aboard the space station. He has already logged 189 days in space and has blasted off aboard both the retired space shuttle Endeavour in 2008 and a Russian Soyuz rocket in 2016.

The Crew-2 mission will be the third spaceflight for Hoshide, who was part of the STS-124 mission aboard the Discovery in 2008 and whose most recent launch included a 124-day stay aboard the ISS in 2012.

Pesquet, the youngest member of the crew at age 42, is also the only one never to have taken part on a mission under the now-retired U.S. space shuttle program. But hes already spent 196 days in space.

The Crew-2 astronauts are expected to stay aboard the space station for about six months alongside three other crew members who will arrive separately on a Russian Soyuz. That makes for a seven-person crew, rather than the usual six, which NASA said will allow twice as much research to be performed during their stay.

The inside of Virgin Galactics space plane is like a space-age executive jet.

The seats recline to absorb the forces of acceleration toward space. Mood lighting shifts during each phase of the flight. Twelve windows two for each of the six passengers, who have paid hundreds of thousands of dollars each for a seat provide an impressive view of Earth and the darkness of space. Sixteen cameras will capture you floating. And the back of the cabin includes a big circular mirror so that you can watch yourself enjoying a few minutes escaping the effects of gravity.

Virgin Galactic will be offering short up-and-down trips to the edge of space, essentially like giant roller coaster rides with better views, in its space plane, SpaceShipTwo.

But how can the company unveil the fancy new interior of its space plane in the middle of a global pandemic when journalists are not able to gather for a fancy media event?

Modern technology provided an imaginative solution. Virgin Galactic sent Oculus virtual reality headsets as loaners to journalists so that they could chat with the designers of the cabin while walking through a computer-generated version of it an experience of almost being there while being nowhere near there.

For me, that was standing in my cluttered home office on Monday, trying to avoid walking into the door, walls and stacks of boxes, while gazing at Earth above.

Obviously, youre on your journey to become an astronaut yourself, Jeremy Brown, design director at Virgin Galactic, said during our voyage into virtual reality. In this Oculus world, the avatars of other people are mannequin heads with a couple of disembodied gesticulating hands.

If you werent sent a VR headset, the company presented a livestream event on YouTube on Tuesday, the first public viewing of the inside of SpaceShipTwo.

Aboard SpaceShipTwo, every seat is, of course, a window seat, with one window to the side and a second above. Unlike commercial jets, the cockpit area where the two pilots sit is not walled off, so passengers can also look out the front windows.

The virtual-reality experience offers a unique perspective not possible in real life. I was able to walk through the wall of SpaceShipTwo to look at the outside of the spacecraft and the full panorama of Earth.

The mirror is the largest mirror on board a spaceship, Mr. Brown said, adding, Thats a really nice memory for you as a customer to have that kind of analog memory of seeing you and your fellow crew members floating around.

The company, which went public in October, is not yet promising when virtual reality will turn into actual reality. This year, it moved its operations from Mojave, Calif., where SpaceShipTwo was developed and initially tested, to Spaceport America in New Mexico, where the commercial flights will take place.

Also making the move was the White Knight Two airplane that will carry the space plane to an altitude of about 50,000 feet before dropping it. SpaceShipTwos engine then ignites, taking it up to more than 50 miles. At the top of the arc, passengers will float for about four minutes before the space plane re-enters the atmosphere and glides to a runway landing.

The actual interior is not quite finished, said George Whitesides, who just turned over the chief executive role at Virgin Galactic to Michael Colglazier, who had been in charge of the theme parks at Disney. Mr. Whitesides assumed a newly created position of chief space officer.

Virgin Galactic has more than 600 customers who paid up to $250,000 each for seats on its earliest flights. But it stopped selling tickets in December 2018. The company has not yet said when it will restart sales or how much a seat will cost now, except that the price will be higher. However, it allows people to get in line by paying a $1,000 deposit.

In the future, the company will face competition from Blue Origin, the private rocket company founded by Jeffrey P. Bezos, the chief executive of Amazon. The company also offers suborbital trips to the edge of space on its reusable New Shepard rocket and capsule, but Amazon has not yet tested flights with people aboard or announced when it will start selling tickets or how much they will cost.

And customers with tens of millions of dollars to spend may be flying to Earth orbit or perhaps even the International Space Station in the coming years aboard Crew Dragon, the capsule built for NASA by SpaceX, the rocket company founded by Elon Musk. SpaceX flew two NASA astronauts successfully to the station in May, and plans to bring them home on Sunday if weather permits.

After a couple of successful glide tests at the New Mexico spaceport, the final rounds of testing will consist of powered flights, including ones with employees who will play the role of paying passengers. The company has not set a target date for the first commercial flight the one that will have its founder, Richard Branson, aboard.

Ellis said Project Possum (Polar Suborbital Science in the Upper Mesosphere) was an exciting opportunity to pursue suborbital microgravity research. This microgravity environment is induced by parabolic flight.

While Project Possum provides suborbital flight training on aircraft which complete a number of parabolas, the Astronaut-Candidates are being trained for suborbital flight on the next generation of commercial suborbital spaceflight vehicles.

This is more affordable than going all the way to the International Space Station (ISS) to perform experiments or test and qualify space hardware.

When training is complete, Ellis will be a qualified Suborbital Flight crew member, trained and accredited for spaceflight to a level which exceeds the minimum United States Code of Federal Regulations 460.5(b). This means accreditation to conduct experimental programs in High-G and suborbital environments for equipment testing and qualification, and also to undertake de-risking research earmarked for the ISS, the Lunar Gateway or beyond.

Elliss background is as a chemist and as a senior technical officer at BHP in the uranium technology team, before being made redundant when the miner closed the Newcastle site.

Asked by a career consultant what she would do next if she could do anything, Ellis answered rocket scientist, and was advised that law might be a good general option to start the next phase of her professional life.

She is of course eager to complete her training and get back to scientific research. The rescheduled five-day program is now slated for this December.

They decided to reschedule the flight and space suit training until September, but we just had a monthly meeting and they updated us to say that the flight and space suit trainings being rescheduled for December 7th to the 11th, in Melbourne, Florida, Ellis said.

Nasa moon mission asks US universities to develop technology – The Guardian

Nasa has asked American universities to propose new technologies that will help the space agency conduct sustainable exploration of the moon. Successful applicants will receive up to $2m (1.5m) from the newly inaugurated lunar surface technology research (Lustr) opportunity to rapidly develop technology in two key areas: finding and extracting water from the lunar soil or regolith, and developing power systems that will maintain technology through the long lunar nights.

Both are necessary for astronauts to stay on the moon for long periods. The water is essential for life support and can be split into hydrogen and oxygen for use as rocket fuel. Each lunar night is equivalent to 14 Earthdays and so reliable batteries will be needed, along with power distribution and control systems that can work well in the moons harsh radiation environment. Such power systems will also be needed to extract the water, much of which is thought to exist in permanently shadowed craters near the moons south pole.

Although the first human landings are scheduled for 2024, this will be only a short stay. Sustainable lunar exploration is not expected to begin until 2028. Lustr applications must be received by 12 August.

Spring ISD to host informational sessions for parents about district technology – Community Impact Newspaper

In preparation for a remote start to the 2020-21 school year, Spring ISD officials will host informational sessions in both English in Spanish to allow parents and guardians to learn more about the technology and programs that students will be using. (Courtesy Fotolia)

As previously reported by Community Impact Newspaper, Spring ISD's 2020-21 school year will begin remotely Aug. 17 until at least Sept. 11. According to a district news release, each of the 45-minute sessions will allow participants to learn more about Schoology, the district's learning management system, which all students will be using this year to access classes and assignments.

Additionally, district officials will also show participants how to log into the mySpringISD portal to access the Home Access Center, where parents and guardians can track their student's grades, attendance and report cards.

"Whether your student will be learning remotely for the entire school year or coming back on campus for in-person instruction when it's safe to do so, they'll be using Schoology and the Home Access Center. So now is the time to familiarize yourself with these resources," the release reads.

STEVENS POINT The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is offering additional help to meet academic challenges resulting from the coronavirus pandemic to new admitted students during the fall semester.

Through the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security, CARES, Act, first-year and transfer students will each receive a $275 grant to support technology needs. Nearly $400,000 in grants has been allocated to 1,452 students so far and will be disbursed during the second week of the fall semester, according to UWSP. The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships will continue awarding these grants to any newly eligible students weekly through the tenth day of fall semester.

To be eligible, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The 2020-2021FAFSAcan still be completed. For assistance, contact the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships at 715-347-4771.

We are doing all we can to support our students and help them succeed during these challenging times, said Troy Seppelt, assistant vice chancellor for student affairs and dean of students, in a news release.
