An Evolution Definition of Darwinism – ThoughtCo

Charles Darwin is known as the "Father of Evolution" for being the first person to publish his theory not only describing that evolution was a change in species over time but also put together a mechanism for how it works (called natural selection). There is arguably no other evolutionary scholar as well known and revered as Darwin. In fact, the term "Darwinism" has come to be synonymous with the Theory of Evolution, but what really is meant when people say the word Darwinism? And more importantly, what does Darwinism NOT mean?

Darwinism, when it was first put into the lexicon by Thomas Huxley in 1860, was only meant to describe the belief that species change over time. In the most basic of terms, Darwinism became synonymous with Charles Darwin's explanation of evolution and, to an extent, his description of natural selection. These ideas, first published in his arguably most famous book On the Origin of Species, were direct and have stood the test of time. So, originally, Darwinism only included the fact that species change over time due to nature selecting the most favorable adaptations within the population. These individuals with better adaptations lived long enough to reproduce and pass those traits down to the next generation, ensuring the species' survival.

While many scholars insist this should be the extent of information that the word Darwinism should encompass, it has somewhat evolved itself over time as the Theory of Evolution itself also changed when more data and information became readily available. For instance, Darwin did not know anything about Genetics as it wasn't until after his death that Gregor Mendel did his work with his pea plants and published the data. Many other scientists proposed alternative mechanisms for evolution during a time which became known as neo-Darwinism. However, none of these mechanisms held up over time and Charles Darwin's original assertions were restored as the correct and leading Theory of Evolution. Now, the Modern Synthesis of the Evolutionary Theory is sometimes described using the term "Darwinism", but this is somewhat misleading since it includes not only Genetics but also other topics not explored by Darwin like microevolution via DNA mutations and other molecular biological tenets.

In the United States, Darwinism has taken on a different meaning to the general public. In fact, opponents to the Theory of Evolution have taken the term Darwinism and created a false definition of the word that brings up a negative connotation for many who hear it. The strict Creationists have taken the word hostage and created a new meaning which is often perpetuated by those in the media and others who do not truly understand the real meaning of the word. These anti-evolutionists have taken the word Darwinism to not only mean a change in species over time but have lumped in the origin of life along with it. Darwin did not assert any sort of hypothesis on how life on Earth began in any of his writings and only could describe what he had studied and had evidence to back up. Creationists and other anti-evolutionary parties either misunderstood the term Darwinism or purposefully hijacked it to make it more negative. The term has even been used to describe the origin of the universe by some extremists, which is way beyond the realm of anything Darwin would have made a conjecture on at any time in his life.

In other countries around the world, however, this false definition is not present. In fact, in the United Kingdom where Darwin did most of his work, it is a celebrated and understood term that is commonly used instead of the Theory of Evolution through Natural Selection. There is no ambiguity of the term there and it is used correctly by scientists, the media, and the general public every day.

Darwinism, theory of the evolutionary mechanism propounded by Charles Darwin as an explanation of organic change. It denotes Darwins specific view that evolution is driven mainly by natural selection.

Beginning in 1837, Darwin proceeded to work on the now well-understood concept that evolution is essentially brought about by the interplay of three principles: (1) variationa liberalizing factor, which Darwin did not attempt to explain, present in all forms of life; (2) hereditythe conservative force that transmits similar organic form from one generation to another; and (3) the struggle for existencewhich determines the variations that will confer advantages in a given environment, thus altering species through a selective reproductive rate.

On the basis of newer knowledge, neo-Darwinism has superseded the earlier concept and purged it of Darwins lingering attachment to the Lamarckian theory of inheritance of acquired characters. Present knowledge of the mechanisms of inheritance are such that modern scientists can distinguish more satisfactorily than Darwin between non-inheritable bodily variation and variation of a genuinely inheritable kind.

Social Darwinism – HISTORY

Contents

Social Darwinism is a loose set of ideologies that emerged in the late 1800s in which Charles Darwins theory of evolution by natural selection was used to justify certain political, social, or economic views. Social Darwinists believe in survival of the fittestthe idea that certain people become powerful in society because they are innately better. Social Darwinism has been used to justify imperialism, racism, eugenics and social inequality at various times over the past century and a half.

According to Darwins theory of evolution, only the plants and animals best adapted to their environment will survive to reproduce and transfer their genes to the next generation. Animals and plants that are poorly adapted to their environment will not survive to reproduce.

Charles Darwin published his notions on natural selection and the theory of evolution in his influential 1859 book On the Origin of Species.

Darwins theory of evolution by natural selection was a scientific theory focused on explaining his observations about biological diversity and why different species of plants and animals look different.

Yet in an attempt to convey his scientific ideas to the British public, Darwin borrowed popular concepts, including survival of the fittest, from sociologist Herbert Spencer and struggle for existence from economist Thomas Malthus, who had earlier written about how human societies evolve over time.

Darwin rarely commented on the social implications of his theories. But to those who followed Spencer and Malthus, Darwins theory appeared to be confirming with science what they already believed to be true about human societythat the fit inherited qualities such as industriousness and the ability to accumulate wealth, while the unfit were innately lazy and stupid.

After Darwin published his theories on biological evolution and natural selection, Herbert Spencer drew further parallels between his economic theories and Darwins scientific principles.

Spencer applied the idea of survival of the fittest to so-called laissez faire or unrestrained capitalism during the Industrial Revolution, in which businesses are allowed to operate with little regulation from the government.

Unlike Darwin, Spencer believed that people could genetically pass learned qualities, such as frugality and morality, on to their children.

Spencer opposed any laws that helped workers, the poor, and those he deemed genetically weak. Such laws, he argued, would go against the evolution of civilization by delaying the extinction of the unfit.

Another prominent Social Darwinist was American economist William Graham Sumner. He was an early opponent of the welfare state. He viewed individual competition for property and social status as a tool for eliminating the weak and immoral of the population.

As social Darwinist rationalizations of inequality gained popularity in the late 1800s, British scholar Sir Francis Galton (a half-cousin of Darwin) launched a new science aimed at improving the human race by ridding society of its undesirables. He called it eugenics.

Galton proposed to better humankind by propagating the British elite. He argued that social institutions such as welfare and mental asylums allowed inferior humans to survive and reproduce at higher levels than their superior counterparts in Britains wealthy class.

Galtons ideas never really took hold in his country, but they became popular in America where the concepts of eugenics quickly gained strength.

Eugenics became a popular social movement in the United States that peaked in the 1920s and 1930s. Books and films promoted eugenics, while local fairs and exhibitions held fitter family and better baby competitions around the country.

The eugenics movement in the United States focused on eliminating undesirable traits from the population. Proponents of the eugenics movement reasoned the best way to do this was by preventing unfit individuals from having children.

During the first part of the twentieth century, 32 U.S. states passed laws that resulted in the forced sterilization of more than 64,000 Americans including immigrants, people of color, unmarried mothers and the mentally ill.

Adolf Hitler, one of the worlds most notorious eugenicists, drew inspiration from Californias forced sterilizations of the feeble-minded in designing Nazi Germanys racially based policies.

Hitler began reading about eugenics and social Darwinism while he was imprisoned following a failed 1924 coup attempt known as the Beer Hall Putsch.

Hitler adopted the social Darwinist take on survival of the fittest. He believed the German master race had grown weak due to the influence of non-Aryans in Germany. To Hitler, survival of the German Aryan race depended on its ability to maintain the purity of its gene pool.

The Nazis targeted certain groups or races that they considered biologically inferior for extermination. These included Jews, Roma (gypsies), Poles, Soviets, people with disabilities and homosexuals.

By the end of World War II, social Darwinist and eugenic theories had fallen out of favor in the United States and much of Europepartly due to their associations with Nazi programs and propaganda, and because these theories were scientifically unfounded.

The FINANCIAL – UNICEF: Gambling prevention in adolescents should be on a national health agenda – The FINANCIAL

Problem gambling among adolescents and youth is a growing public health concern globally, as well as in Georgia, UNICEF study says. The aim of the UNICEF study, International Experience of Gambling Prevention Among Adolescents, conducted within the framework of the UNICEF and Patriarchate of Georgia Partnership, was to understand how other countries, including developed countries, are responding to growing problems of adolescents gambling, as well as share best practices in the concerned area.

Worldwide, the prevalence of gambling is 2 to 4 times higher among adolescents than among adults, with up to 8% of adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 being pathological gamblers. Problem gambling during adolescence can lead to adverse outcomes, such as strained relationships, delinquency and criminal behaviors, depression and even suicide. Such negative outcomes have short- and long-term implications for the individuals, their families, peers, as well as for society at large.

Adolescents are more susceptible to gambling fallacies, says Dr. Ghassan Khalil, UNICEF Representative in Georgia. Early exposure to gambling may lead to a higher risk of developing problem gambling. It is crucial to take decisive steps by strengthening evidence-based policies and prevention strategies, as well as by launching specific services tailored for young people to reduce current and future harm and social costs associated with gambling, Khalil added.

The study finds that a significant reduction of demand on gambling could be achieved by awareness raising, education activities, and public health policy introduction and implementation. Adolescents with less knowledge about gambling and problem gambling are more likely to gamble and achieve a problem gambling level than those who have greater knowledge about the harm of gambling.

In June 2020, the adolescents hotline 111 was established to address the psychosocial needs of adolescents/youth and their parents/caregivers, in response to an increase of pathological gambling or gaming during COVID-19 pandemic, and to provide psychological first aid and psychotherapy if needed. To reach the hotline, adolescents, children and their families need to dial 111. The number is operational during working days from 10am till 7pm. All calls from Georgia are free of charge.

The child hotline is a joint initiative of the Human Rights and Civil Integration Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, the Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories of Georgia, Labour, Health and Social Affairs and UNICEF. The goal of the hotline is to respond to the immediate needs of children and adolescents during the COVID19 pandemic.

Last week, Minister of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labor, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia, Ekaterine Tikaradze conducted a working meeting with the representatives of UNICEF. UNICEF presented to the Ministry the results of the recently conducted research. The goal of the research is to assess the readiness of social system amid COVID-19 and its impact on the poverty rate. The arrangement includes the BPL, the 1B Pro League and the Super Cup.

The agreement was reportedly facilitated with the help of Eleven Sports, an international sports broadcaster that will be involved in the arrangement. Game streaming rights will be given to bwin, which will allow the operator to put live matches up on its website, as well as its mobile platforms. The financial details of the arrangement havent been released.

The commercial head of bwin Benelux & Row, Steven Cartigny, is ready to dig in and develop a robust plan in Belgium. He explains, Games of chance and betting can add an extra dimension to the football experience. However, each partner is aware of the risks of irresponsible behaviour. Thats why we are all committed to minimising the risks, each in his own role.

In this partnership, bwin, the Pro League and Eleven Sports will focus on an overall prevention policy, the protection of players and the integrity of football as a whole. This cooperation will be measured at any time against the goals and best practice set out in the cooperation agreement between the Pro League and the Gaming Commission.

Belgiums gaming scene has had a few setbacks this year. The Belgian Gaming Commission came under fire in February for alleged ethics violations, and the country has been clamping down betting limits over concerns of exaggerated online gambling due to the coronavirus lockdown. Overall, though, Belgium continues to have one of the better online gaming markets found anywhere.

Erwin Dickman is optimistic about the gambling industry’s future – CalvinAyre.com

While the majority of the casino and gaming industry remains paralysed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Erwin Dickman remains the eternal optimist. The Market Manager for Asia Live Tech predicts that big brand casinos will be able to leverage the digital era and the new normal to open up opportunities in unexplored markets. Dickman took some time out to give our own Beck Liggero Fontana a glimpse into an exciting future.

Despite the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the industry, Dickman believes theres an opportunity for land-based casinos to expand into the live tables and live casino market. Land-based casinos need to start ever-evolving, he said. A change we didnt know that would come so soon but it has to happen now. Thats why we are saying that AI gaming is the way to go. Digital gaming has been booming since COVID-19 began. We dont want to see our ideal land-based casinos go down. We want to see all the big brands continue in this new space, which is the digital element.

Dickman elaborated further on the opportunities for the branded tables to make the shift to the digital space. Its about how you are going to implement your current land-based tables, implementing a land-based casino system. Implement a ticket online so you can all have your own products, he said, adding:

We have seen big brands and live dealer studios come up in the market. There are quite a number now. Imagine a day youll see live tables from MGM going live and you can play right from your home. It just takes one casino from Las Vegas or in a different country to create that vertical opportunity.

With the shift into the digital world, Dickman believes that regulators will need to move with the technology and adopt new rules for land-based casinos. Things will be different, and regulatory bodies will have to look into different policies that adapt to the changing world, he said. They have to look at how to want to mitigate the risks and how they want to avoid exploitation. I believe more regulations are going to come which is a good thing. Well have a more stable gaming industry in a digital element which is beneficial for everyone.

In the full interview, Dickman goes onto explain that adoption and education will be crucial in capturing the attention of the older generation in the digital gaming market. And dont forget to subscribe to the CalvinAyre.com YouTube channel to see every interview we make as it goes up.

UK Gambling Commission Launches Public Awareness Campaign on Gambling Controls, Rights and Safeguards – European Gaming Industry News

Reading Time: 3 minutes

The Social Market Foundation (SMF) has released a new report into online gambling, with the main recommendation being that a 100-a-month spending cap should be implemented.

SMF, a cross-party think-tank, also calls for a sweeping overhaul of the way gambling firms are taxed, to put financial pressure on companies registered abroad to bring their operations to Britain.

SMF proposed a comprehensive new framework of regulation and oversight for a gambling sector increasingly dominated by online playing. Its report comes ahead of a Government review of the 2005 Gambling Act, which ministers have said is not suitable for an era of online gambling.

The report recommends new affordability checks to protect gamblers from serious financial harm. It proposes a soft cap on spending where anyone who wanted to spend more than 23 a week on gambling products would have to prove they could afford to lose the money without hardship.

The report also said that the stake limits on online slot games proposed by regulators should be set between 1 and 5. Non-slot online gambling games should face new restrictions on the way they are designed rather than financial limits, the SMF said.

The report also proposes a complete reform of the way gambling operators are taxed, to put greater burdens on firms based offshore in Gibraltar or the Isle of Man, and reduce the tax faced by companies that bring their operations onshore.

The smaller a firms footprint, the higher the levels of Remote Gaming Duty and Betting Duty they should face, the SMF said. The proposed system would reward companies that bring their operations to Britain, while increasing the costs of operating offshore, the report said.

Gambling taxation should be redesigned around a system of incentives which reflect a companys level of onshore presence. This means that operators could still decide to base their headquarters in locations like Gibraltar, the Isle of Man, or Alderney, but that decision would carry significant tax implications, SMF said.

The report also calls for a comprehensive shake-up of Whitehall and the public bodies overseeing gambling and gamblers. The structures created by the 2005 Gambling Act are no longer fit for purpose, SMF said.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport should no longer have sole responsibility for gambling policy, being replaced by a new cross-government Gambling Quartet, SMF said.

The lead author of the report is Dr. James Noyes, a leading authority on gambling policy and a former adviser to Tom Watson MP.

James Noyes said:

For too long, gambling operators have talked about the need to protect their customers, but have not worked together in order to make affordability checks a reality. A fixed cap that applies across operators is the only way that consumers can be protected from harmful spend. Our proposed threshold sets the bar low enough to protect everyone, including those on low income, but is high enough to reflect the vast majority of gambling activity among the general population. Gamblers should be free to spend more than this threshold but only after they show that their gambling is neither unaffordable nor harmful.

On tax:

We need to see an end to the problem of offshore gambling tax avoidance. Gambling taxation should be redesigned around a system of incentives which reflect a companys level of onshore presence. This means that operators could still decide to base their headquarters in locations like Gibraltar, the Isle of Man, or Alderney, but that decision would carry significant tax implications. The message to online gambling operators should be clear: if you want to benefit from the British market, then make a commitment to being based in Britain.

Gambling can never be justified – The Shillong Times

Editor,

The reflex response to Avner Pariats writing, Should Meghalaya Have a Casino (ST July 22, 2020.) by S K Sharma has clearly raised a lot of eyebrows. Mr. Sharmas instantaneous reply only bares his desperate attempt to defend the building of a casino here in Khasi hills for reasons best known to him. Perhaps, he has a big role to play in the casino building but having said that, his outrageous ridiculing and mocking of Avner Pariats article was totally uncalled for. Mr. Sharmas narration was disgusting and unpleasant. The statements he made were insulting and contemptuous and done with an intention to humiliate Mr Pariat. He pokes fun and makes mockery of the whole article but pity nobody enjoyed the joke. He thinks that he knows how to combine his sarcasm and insults with humour but sadly, a downside of humour is that it doesnt always go down well in other cultures even if they speak the same language.

S.K. Sharma says that thoh timgenerates income for our people. He did not do his research well. He should have used Google to find out as to how many unemployed locals have been given employment by thoh tim. Oh! the curse and sins, the dreams and promises ofthoh tim. Songs have been sung, poems have been written, jokes have been shared but always about misfortunes and poverty because ofteer.Every family here in our land has borne the brunt of this thohtim at one time or the other but will anyone talk about their misfortune and loss because ofteer? Nobody will and why? Because it is a shame!

Hence the perception of Sharma about the locals generating income throughteeris laughable and ridiculous. Yes, it is true that teergambling was legalized like he says, some forty years or so ago in the guise of Khasi culture and tradition which in fact it is not so. Arrow shooting is a Khasi traditional sport. It is a game of skills where sportsmen compete by shooting on a target of one ft. in length and four inches in diameter, fastened on a small pole whereas teergambling in the teer ground is conducted by shooting arrows on a very huge target solely for gambling purpose.

Gambling is taboo in Khasi culture. The ill-gotten money and the spoils ofteergambling by duping the common man is shared in crores daily only by the very few who control the monopoly in the shooting ground. What Government receives as revenue is hogwash.

When teergambling has already proven to impoverish the local people, the setting up of a casino goes beyond our imagination. Sharma talks about Goa Casinos. Doesnt he know that the Goa Government had to ban locals from gambling due to the rise in gambling addiction and to save the local culture. Here in our state, once there is a casino, all laws, rules and regulations saying that no locals will be allowed will just be babbles. Yes, it is a fact that we do not pay income tax but what about the likes of Sharma? Will he pay income tax on the money from the casino? Does he submit his returns to the income tax dept. for the money he wins from teer? I wonder what document he shows to the Tax Dept to prove that he has won the money from teer? No wonder he advocates all kinds of gambling here in our State.

Recommendations, guidance from ruthless opportunists who are there only to make hay while the sun shines, may not go down well in a society of people belonging to a different culture. Therefore, thank you but no thank you, Mr Sharma, we do not need the likes of you to enlighten and encourage our people to open up gambling places and generate income for the State.

Yours etc.,

Jennifer Lyngdoh,

Editor,

The well-known proverb, justice delayed is justice denied, reflects the reality of the judicial system in India. Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu has expressed his concern on the pendency of cases from the Supreme Court to the lower courts while addressing students at the Platinum Jubilee meet of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar College of Law, Andhra University on the occasion of its 76th Foundation Day. People have faith in the judiciary, but they want timely justice. The number of undertrial prisoners awaiting justice for long periods of time in different courts are far too many. Land and property-related disputes take many decades to settle. The need of the hour is to make the delivery of justice speedier and affordable. Fast track courts, timely police investigation without any political pressure, and online hearing will help the disposal of cases. India currently needs comprehensive judicial reforms.

Yours etc.,

Stryker’s Neuroform Atlas Stent System granted an expanded indication, providing a new option for patients with aneurysms in the back of the brain -…

KALAMAZOO, Michigan, USA, Aug. 3, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --Stryker announced today that it has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for an expanded indication of its Neuroform Atlas Stent System, becoming the first and only adjunctive stent approved for use in the posterior (back of the brain) circulation. Aneurysms in the posterior circulation rupture more frequently and are generally more difficult to treat. With the approval of the Neuroform Atlas adjunctive stent for the posterior circulation, long term treatment is more feasible.

Already approved for use in the anterior circulation, the expanded indication was granted based on robust clinical trial evidence proving the safety and efficacy of the device. The combined patients from both the anterior and posterior cohorts totaled 298 patients, making it the largest study of its kind.

"The Atlas Posterior PMA trial data shows a compelling advancement in the treatment of wide-neck posterior aneurysms," said Dr. Sam Zaidat, Director of the Neuroscience and Stroke Center at Mercy Health System in Toledo, Ohio, and Co-Principal Investigator of the U.S. Neuroform Atlas investigational trial. "Posterior stent assisted coiling with Neuroform Atlas achieved an impressive high rate of complete occlusion in this very challenging location at 76.7%. Equally impressive was the 4.3% primary safety rate."

An estimated 6.5 million people in the United States have unruptured brain aneurysms with an average rupture rate of 1 every 18 minutes. Ruptured brain aneurysms are fatal in roughly 50% of cases.1

"Complete occlusion, or complete blocking of blood flow, is the gold standard in determining long term aneurysm healing," said DrBrian Jankowitz, Director, Cerebrovascular Surgery at the Cooper Neurological Institute in Camden, New Jersey. "With the additional challenges that come with treating posterior circulation aneurysms, we never would have anticipated reaching occlusion rates that rival those found in the anterior circulation. Now with Neuroform Atlas, those same high rates are achievable."

"The results from the Atlas Posterior PMA trial demonstrate that physicians can now address the more difficult posterior circulation aneurysms, offering hope for better outcomes in that patient population," said Mark Paul, president of Stryker's Neurovascular division. "This expanded indication of Neuroform Atlas, as the first and only adjunctive stent for use in the posterior circulation, reflects our ongoing commitment to advancing stroke care for patients with cerebrovascular disease."

About Neuroform Atlas Stent SystemStryker's Neuroform Atlas Stent System is a self-expanding nitinol stent used in conjunction with metal coils to pack weakened blood vessel sacs called aneurysms within the brain. The stent is positioned across the aneurysm neck to hold metal coils in place and occlude the aneurysm.

The Neuroform Atlas Stent System is indicated for use with neurovascular embolization coils in the anterior and posterior circulation of the neurovasculature for the endovascular treatment of patients 18 years of age with saccular wide-necked (neck width 4 mm or a dome-to-neck ratio of < 2) intracranial aneurysms arising from a parent vessel with a diameter of 2.0 mm and 4.5 mm.

About StrykerStryker is one of the world's leading medical technology companies and, together with its customers, is driven to make healthcare better. The company offers innovative products and services in Orthopaedics, Medical and Surgical, and Neurotechnology and Spine that help improve patient and hospital outcomes. New #BlackInNeuro Campaign Connects Bright Minds From Around The World – Forbes

Young Scientist in The Laboratory

If the Covid-19 pandemic has reaffirmed anything about the human condition, its that connectivity matters. Neuroscientists have long understood that being linked to others, interacting with others, and building with others is vital to development, as well as mental, emotional, and physical well-being. But during this same turbulent period in human history weve also been tasked once again with confronting inequities in experiences and representation particularly racial divides around the world. And that includes the education we receive and the work we do.

Currently, Black Americans make up 13% of the population, but estimates by the National Center for Education Statistics of full-time faculty suggestless than 6% of faculty members are Black. And, according to theNational Science Foundation, for more than a decade only about 5% of the 50,000 students earning PhDs each year are Black. What this means is that in everyday situations Black scientists often find themselves to be the only Black person occupying the space they are in. Leaving many feeling isolated and noting they dont have mentors or peers with shared experiences.

So after seeing the way that social media was recently able to connect and network groups of people from all over through hashtag campaigns and efforts to share experiences and interests,a fourth year PhD student at the University of California, Irvine,Angeline Dukes, asked Twitter when they were going to have a Black in Neuro week. But she had no idea the response she would get. Within days a groupof neuroscientists, neuro-engineers, and science communicators mobilized, creating not a day, but an entire week (July 27th-August 2nd) to bring together, celebrate, amplify, and support Black voices in the brain space.

Co-organizer and Stanford postdoctoral fellow,BrielleFerguson, PhD pointed out that, We also cant ignore the social context all of these movements are responding to, were literally watching members of our community either be threatened with violence or being killed for being in spaces people dont think they belong. So, we as members of the Black community, and specifically Black people in neuro were so ready to counter that, and when Angeline tweeted out the call, the answer was a resounding yes from all 22 of us that became organizers, basically in unison. And the result has been beyond anything the organizers could have predicted even with all that brain power.

Beginning Monday,Black In Neurostarted celebrating a week of Black excellence in neuro-related fields. In a matter of days their Twitter account (@BlackInNeuro) has over 12,000 followers, and more than 2,000 people have attended live events. Not to mention that more than 60 individual and institutional donors have become official sponsors. But the most incredible part of all, is that this initiative and all its programming across sites came together in just three weeks proving how eager and passionate neuroscientists are to share their joy for science.

When asked what called her to action, Angeline Dukes said, Growingup, I thought all scientists were old, white men because that's what we see in the media. It is difficult to strive to be what you have never seen. Seeing and being mentored by brilliant Black female scientists at my undergraduate institution, Fisk University, inspired me to apply to graduate school. To this day, they are still a valuable part of my community and reassure me regularly that I belong in neuroscience.

Her sentiment was echoed by other co-organizers such asAshley Cunningham,a neuroscience PhD student at Mount Sinai who added For me, Black In Neuro week has been about redefiningwhat a neuroscientist looks like. We want to show current and future neuroscientists that we are making this space for them, where no one can dull their shine, their intelligence, or their existence. And thats exactly whatDanielle Nadin, a Masters student in Neuroscience at McGill University contends shes gotten from helping to organize. To put it lightly, Black In Neuro Week has changed my life. Its hard to explain the power of seeing people who look like you, and love learning about the brain as much as you do, after having gone for so long feeling as though you would always be the only Black person in the room.

Something else that has made this initiative meaningful is that its broken down barriers not only in terms of race, but also career maturity. Neuroscience is not a field known for cross-sector collaboration or strong partnerships between scientists. But this week undergraduate students, bench scientists, and tenured professors alike have offered up time to share stories, personal journeys, and offered to collaborate with those that they never knew existed.

Adnan Hirad, MD, PhD has been one of those already carving out his valuable time to do calls with younger scientists and aspiring scientists. What the organizers - mostly women - of the #BlackInNeuroWeek platform have done is invaluable. Im immensely grateful. It is already paying dividends in terms of mentoring, sharing ideas, networking and even potential collaborations. Equally important, is that younger students in college or even high school realize there are people that look like them, that are at all stages of the neuroscience knowledge pathway. And we want these younger students to know it is possible to become a neuroscientist, a doctor, or both at the same time. And we are ready to mentor them.

But in addition to building networks and confidence, as well as validating that one isnt alone, its also important to remember thatdiversity drives innovation. Brielle Ferguson reminds us dataconfirms thatdiverse scientists find novel discoveriesat higher rates than their peers - but are still less likely to be rewarded for them, in terms of accolades, and securing faculty positions.

#BlackInNeuro Zoom meeting with team organizers.

Thus, the need for diversity applies not only within our science communities on the human level but also between them. The brain is the most complex organ in the body and arguably the most complex object on earth. Its going to take many different creative minds to begin to unravel its mysteries.D'Angela Pritchett-Rowe,an NIH NAEP Fellow pointed out that, #BlackInNeuroWeek has been extremely validating for me as a Black woman, a neuroscientist, a musician, an artist, and a writer. Someone who is both analytical and creative. This week, especially Thursday #BlackNeuroArt day, showed me that there are so many different intersections of our identities and that none can exist without the other.

And the more connections, the more potential for collaborations of all kinds. Not just here in the U.S., but all over the world because many of the same issues are experienced by Black neuroscientists around the globe.De-Shaine Murray,a Neurotechnology doctoral student at Imperial College London points out, The power of peer support must also be stressed here, as seeing other Black neuroscientists who look like you, encounter the same hurdles as you and feel the same pressures of doing a PhD is rejuvenating, especially in the context of U.K. academia, which has a major diversity problem. But this opportunity has, completely reinvigorated my spirit as we have curated an intercontinental community of support, joy, and resources, saysGwenalle Thomas,a Neurobiology PhD Candidate at Duke University. As the only Black woman in my department, it's easy to feel isolated, especially when people's actions directly contradict their statements on diversity, inclusion, and equity.

But diversity doesn't end with discussions about race for Black In Neuro organizers, according toDr. Kaela S. Singleton, As a Black Queer woman, the beauty of #BlackInNeuroWeek was that it highlighted intersectionalities that are often forgotten in university diversity initiatives. Seeing the amplified voices of Black Disabled, Black Non-Binary, Black trans, Black lesbian/gay folks and Black Women in neuro is so necessary to creating inclusive, welcoming spaces. By being intersectional #BlackInNeuroWeek not only highlighted Blackness but also the beauty and complexity of Black identities in our field.

With three days to go, there is still more for the Black In Neuro team to accomplish. And with each passing day it becomes more evident that their efforts will certainly extend past the week itself. Not just for those in and around neuroscience, but for the patients they treat and research they conduct. "In all my years of organizing, I have never seen a more dedicated, efficient, and passionate group of people. I have no doubt that the accomplishments of #BlackinNeuro will have lasting impacts on our community for years to come, saysRackeb Tesfaye, aPhD Candidate and BlackInNeuro organizer.

When asked what the group envisionsgoing forward, Angeline says the group hopes to seeBlack people in neuro-related fields from all over the world connect with each other and be recognized. And further, that non-Black people will use the opportunity to connect with Black scientists and medical professionals, invite them for speaking engagements (preferablynot just to talk about 'diversity and inclusion'), nominate them for deserved awards, and recognize how their own research impacts the Black community.

For those looking for everything frommentorshiptofunding opportunitiesto network growth, resources are availableonlineand through the Black In Neuro social media accounts. And, please, continue to use the hashtags, share advice, share your journeys, open your networks, and connect with those in and around #BlackInNeuro so together, we can move science forward.

New #BlackInNeuro Campaign Connects Bright Minds From Around The World - Forbes

Indian School Of Media: 70 EMG Founder Martin Da Costa speaks about his journey and events in the post-covid age. – Animation Xpress

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, the events industry had come to a grinding halt. In light of this crisis brought about by covid19 many aggregator platforms and institutes took to webinars to take stock of the unprecedented situation with the help of experts.

Ever since the crisis upended the dynamics of businesses across the world, many event companies pivoted their fundamental strategies to the digital world. Executed by 70 Event Media Group, MG Hector Pluss recent virtual launch set a benchmark in the domain of virtual events. With storyboarding, scripting, conceiving the virtual sets, scenarios; and digital assets, they breathed a new life into this digital launch.

Amid much fanfare and buzz, Indian School Of Media launched a series of fireside chats featuring the leaders of the industry with an aim to address the lockdown woes and concerns of the students community during covid times. For the first time, the 70 EMG founder and CEO Martin Da Costa graced the instagram live for a freewheeling virtual fireside chat to discuss the current crisis, the opportunities and the road ahead. Primarily meant for students, the first session drew an outpouring of fervour and participation from numerous attendees from all walks of life.

With more than two decades of event planning and management experience behind him, Martin is recognised as one of the pioneers of the festival, luxury events and experiential marketing industry in India. His company, Seventy Event Media Group (aka 70 EMG) is billed as the leading integrated event management agency. They have executed one of Indias top-notch events like India Bike Week, Kala Ghoda Festival, Ambani Wedding, Vogue Fashion Week and more.

Unlike the staidness of platforms like Zoom and Jio Meet, Instagram ushered a fresh whiff of novelty and optimism for students who could communicate with him through live comments.

Having been tasked to conduct the session, I could see a range of comments. I decided to digress from the theme and read a few funny ones which compared him to the lead actor of the upcoming (delayed due to covid) James Bond movie to lighten things up. If I had to hazard a guess, Id say those students had perhaps read the name of his company backwards.

While some see him as an Ironman figure; to me, he bears a stronger resemblance to Granada Televisions Sherlock Holmes (played by Jeremy Brett) as our edifying session progressed. His cut-glass etonian accent, deductive reasoning, succinct answers and clever analysis of the current covid-19 crisis; all combined to rustle up that impression as I curiously asked questions like Doctor Watson; Holmes ultimate chronicler

Interestingly, Martin also has a deep affinity for the cinema and culture of India. For one, hes married to an Indian. As a matter of fact, his events journey started with Indias most revered superstar Amitabh Bachchan.

Notwithstanding his palpable english characteristics, he identifies as an Indian at heart. In a surprising admission, he vouchsafes that he might have already caught covid-19 and recovered from it. He adds in jest, Maybe I didnt get sick because we Indians are strong enough to handle it

The events business will have to come roaring back Martin Da Costa

In my opening question, I ask about whether it would be fair to say that he practically brought the culture of luxury events to India, he modestly answers: Theres a sense of that but lets not forget that luxury events in India have been happening for thousands of years. Mughal Courts were one of the richest and one of the most luxurious courts in the world. And India accounted for, at one point, 27 per cent of the worlds GDP. Back in the 90s, there wasnt really a culture of hiring an agency to do it. We kind of pioneered that, especially the weddings. Our first wedding was in Udaipur. We were the first company to do a private wedding on Jag Mandir

His response instantly reminds me of Shashi Tharoors iconic speech at Oxford union. Just two miles away from 221-B, Bakers Street, London (Sherlock Holmes abode) lies a neighbourhood called Hampstead where Martin was attending a party back in 1995. At that party, Martin was introduced to Mr Bachchan by a mutual friend; a meeting, which in retrospect marked his foray in India as the pioneer of luxury events.

Speaking about his journey, he recounts: Bizarrely, it started with Amitabh Bachchan.. Very Oddly..So I was 25 years old and I was working in a Sports Events Agency in London. And I was invited by a friend of mine to a house party in Hampstead. I met this very distinguished guy and his brother and his brothers wife. And it turned out to be Amitabh, Ajitabh and Ramola Bachchan. I remember it was 28th of August 1995. Within 24 hours, they offered me a job to come over to India and set up a Sports Marketing Agency

Martin worked there for a while before branching out to set up his own agency. He candidly shares that he began with artists management and slowly drifted into event management for Coco Cola, Pepsi etc.

As a young boy, I had briefly dabbled in the events industry and volunteered at India International Jewellery Show (co-incidentally executed by 70 EMG) to experience the nature of the job. The co-ordination and work culture had impressed me. When I ask him about the secret of their success, he reveals that it is all attributable to the discipline which is akin to special forces army units, sense of humour and their policy of not suffering fools gladly.

I find this Hologram technology really interesting as well. You can have Jimmy Hendricks doing a concert and he looks exactly real. You can have Jimmy Hendricks, ColdPlay and Lata Mangeshkar all on stage together and you can sit back and watch it Martin Da Costa

He elaborates further, You would have experienced some of it yourself at IIJS. One of the things that I do tell the people who join us for the first time. I say, it is a difficult job. It is a really time-consuming and sometimes exhausting job. But on the flip side of it, no day is ever the same and that is one of the lovely things about being in the events business. As far as 70 EMG is concerned, what I think probably makes us different; it may sound a bit cocky but we do kind of see ourselves as the special forces commando army unit; only in the sense that every special forces soldier has to go through a selection process; It is a very tough selection process. Very few make it through that selection process. There is a bit of a culture at 70 EMG of; not suffering fools gladly, in a sense that if you come in and youre not prepared to give your 100 per cent, you will be found out pretty quickly and in the nicest way, you will be asked to move on

The phrase not suffering fools gladly immediately reminds me of Holmes conversations with Watson, reaffirming my earlier assessment. As he expounds on the culture and work-ethic of 70 EMG, I cant help picturing him in a victorian overcoat and a deerstalker hat, smoking a calabash pipe against a fireplace.

Extolling the importance of having a sense of humour in tough situations, he shares: The essence of the events business is that you cannot get anything wrong. And the only way that is going to happen is if you plan really exhaustively and work really hard to make that plan come on. Also the most important thing is that we also have a sense of humour about who we are and what we do and the fun we can have doing it. Because it is that sense of humour that carries you through the tough times. The most important thing is look after each other and when its hot and dusty and youre awake for 48 hours on a hilltop in Goa for the India Bike Week with eighty thousand people and the biker going nuts and you see someone from 70 EMG walking past you, give him or her energy, give them love, get them up again because you will go through different phases during an event. Youre tired one moment, up next. And if everyone is giving energy to each other at the same time, then those ups and downs tend to level off. And we end up with the atmosphere that I think people enjoy

If Martins official twitter bio is anything to go by, he also describes himself as an occasional misanthrope; an attribute that qualifies him for the membership of Mycrofts Diogenes Club. However, in this session, he comes off rather convivial as he takes candid stabs at numerous questions.

I ask him to explain what an experiential event really means and he contextualises it by sharing: You would imagine there are hundreds of different types of events because everything from an Ambani wedding to the launch of LinkedIns latest e-commerce offering to a bunch of other business events. What they all have in common is that they have to be an experience hence the word experiential. It involves all five of your senses. One has to involve all five of your senses plus your brain plus your emotion. Its about weaving a story which you then illustrate with everything down to speeches and the visual treat

He adds, Well have the screens, the sets, the ambience, taste, food, drinks, touch; the tactile nature of the materials, seating etc. We go into, especially these days, obviously, incredible detail to get all of that right. So people are taken on a journey; its an experience. The objective is that people walk away from that experiential journey having learnt something; having enjoyed it, having connected with other people and having connected with the brand. Thats what were trying to push. The fact that they have enjoyed their time, their family and thats the objective of what were trying to do and of course it sometimes works and sometimes you screw it up. Sometimes you miss things out and the better you are; the more you plan ahead, more you think this through; the more experiential touch youre able to put together for the audience. And ultimately it is all about the audience; it is only about the audience. What they feel, see, hear and think about.. That is the importance of the whole experience

Gossip indeed is an integral part of human evolution. We developed as a human race because we gossip with each other. To think that gossip is going to go away is not an option Martin Da Costa

Touching upon the social distancing measures induced by the pandemic, he notes that humans are social animals essentially; which means we feel this urgent need to stand shoulder to shoulder. While clients are going to be very tempted to try and save money by doing virtual events because it does save a lot of money, there will come a time when one person will do a live event and journalists and people will be so bored of looking at their screens that they will flock to that event and it will get huge publicity and sell cars and the next guy will have to do that and the next will have to do that and the events business will have to come roaring back, he asserts. His dextrous analysis is both insightful reassuring to students who are studying the nuts and bolts of event management. Behind him, I see a huge library in his house. It is clear that like most CEOs on this planet, Martin is also an avid reader.

A habit Ive been endeavouring to develop for quite some time. I feel extraordinarily lucky that I had only recently pored over Sapiens: A Brief History Of Humankind, thank heavens, the chapters were fresh in my memory as he decides to ask me on live chat if I have read it. Martin points out that Yuval Noah Harari (the author of Sapiens) attributes much of the human progress and evolution to something as unexpected as gossip. Gossip indeed is an integral part of human evolution, he highlights.

Up until I had read the book, I had, to be honest, thought of it as an odious vice and a character flaw but with him reiterating its significance in the larger scheme of things, I feel a sense of acquittal and relief.

He continues, We developed as a human race because we gossip with each other. Oh Whats over the top of that tree? Is that food over there? Oh I dont know, how about we go there and have a look? To think that gossip is going to go away is not an option.

Making a strong case for the resumption of live events, he asserts, The problem with zoom is that we cant gossip. You and I are looking at each other; talking to each other. I can see a hundred and forty five people alone in their homes unable to sort of nudge each other and say Hes talking rubbish isnt he? I dont agree at all with what hes saying

He also discusses Joe Rogans podcast where Elon Musk had revealed he is working on a neurotechnology which could render human language obsolete in as few as five years.

I briefly get the impulse to ask him if he has read the Adventure Of Blue Carbuncle or Martin Amis but I decided against it in the interest of time.

Expanding upon the role of technology in the events sector, he notes: Yes it is going to change the way we work, it is going to change the way events are conventionally done. None of the technologies that are currently being used are new. Weve been using them forever. One of the things I find really interesting is VR which has not been exploited too much. And I find this Hologram technology really interesting as well. You can have Jimmy Hendricks doing a concert and he looks exactly real. You can have Jimmy Hendricks, ColdPlay and Lata Mangeshkar all on stage together and you can sit back and watch it

From fitness tips to life philosophies to advice on entrepreneurship, Martin cuts across every subject or query raised by the students, making the session insightful, inspiring and fun. He also advises students to up-skill during the lockdown period and make use of the time to hone their craft in whatever field they wish to excel.

In retrospect, his predictions are starting to come true as the world begins unlocking. It will be interesting to see what events would look like in the post-pandemic age.

Great White Sharks may be closer to the NJ beaches than you think – New Jersey 101.5 FM Radio

Ask anybody who spends lots of time on the waters off the New Jersey coast and they'll tell you there are big sharks not far off the beach. This summer has seen more shark sightings and attacks in waters of the Northeast Coast than in recent years.

Over the weekend, a commercial fisherman out of LBI found a massive Great White Shark in his nets. It was already dead and he suspects it had been already caught by a recreational fisherman on hook and line and released. He returned the shark back into the water after he took these shots. He was pulling his nets about two miles off of the Barnegat Inlet at the northern end of Long Beach Island.

A friend of mine was tuna fishing a few miles out off the coast of Point Pleasant and hooked a nice size yellow fin. As he was pulling the big fish in closer to the boat, he noticed his line felt a little lighter. By the time he got the tuna on board, it was obvious a shark had enjoyed a little sushi for lunch before my friend could reel the fish in.

Shark attacks in New Jersey are rare and you shouldn't be anymore afraid to swim on our beaches than usual. Just keep your eyes open and we thought you'd like to know what's out there.

The post above reflects the thoughts and observations of New Jersey 101.5 talk show host Dennis Malloy. Any opinions expressed are Dennis' own.

A Trip To Virginia Beach Showed Why We Arent Beating This Virus – Forbes

People oblivious to the world around them are likely to take risks that can hurt them and others.

My family lives in Northern Virginia, and we took a trip to Virginia Beach to see the town, experience the wonders of the ocean again, and just spend some time out of the house. In terms of sights, experiences, food, and more, we got all we could ask for. But in terms of an education on why the US cannot shake the Coronavirus, we learned a lot even though we werent thinking of this as we headed out.

CV101 started when we parked near the beach. We donned our masks and stepped out of the car, and immediately noticed that almost no one else was wearing a mask. Now, it was a sunny and warm day and we didnt see big crowds or lack of reasonable distancing. But coming from the DC Metro where wearing a mask is the norm and not wearing mask is likely to get you accosted, this was surprising to us. As we walked around we noticed that all of the stores and restaurants had clear and big signage stating that masks were necessary for entry, so we let this pass and continued our day.

Our concerns were temporarily put to rest when we checked into the beautiful Cavalier hotel. All of the workers wore masks and gloves, and the check-in was done across a leather stanchion rope by workers clearly trained in staying safe and virus mitigation. During check in, we were told how our rooms would not be serviced during the day but that we could request anything needed and it would be brought to the room. But then, as we turned to walk to the elevators, we saw a middle-aged father and his three 20-something daughters with no masks on the girls, and the man barking to another check-in agent with a mask on his mouth but not nose. Then we saw another group of five or six people, also 20-something, dressed nicely for a time out but wearing no masks. We watched as the doorman, wearing a mask and gloves, opened the door for them to leave.

CV201 began after we left our room to experience the Virginia Beach boardwalk and beach. For those who may not know, the Virginia Beach boardwalk is a three-mile wide paved path for walkers with a parallel path for bicycle riders. Look to one side and see the beach and ocean, and the other side to see all kinds of commerce including restaurants, shops, and hotels. As we strolled on the boardwalk, it was shocking to see almost zero mask wearing by people who could not reasonably be claiming to exercise. The level of complacency with what is going on the country was disheartening at best. The boardwalk is wide but not wide enough to keep good distancing with plenty of people moving in each direction. All the stores along the boardwalk also had a lot of signs saying masks were required and yet we saw people everywhere entering and exiting stores and restaurants with no masks. At some point I started expecting people to chide us for wearing masks, but at least that didnt happen. We spent less time than we had hoped on the boardwalk largely because we did not feel comfortable enough to continue.

The education watching people ignore common sense behavior, resulting in school closings and a ... [+] weakened economy, was an unexpected result of a simple two day mini vacation.

After many more similar-experience hours of walking, eating, and enjoying the beach and ocean, we enrolled into CV301 when we went to dinner at a restaurant along the way home. Its a nice family Italian place we had been to before, usually on trips to Kings Dominion park. The doors had signs clearly saying that masks were required for entry, and we were greeted with a server in a mask that directed us to a table. We noticed that a lot of tables had reserved signs on them, and realized that this is how they were enforcing distancing in the dining areas. The menus were available via a QR code taped on the table. We sat at a table far from others thanks to this, so the restaurant gets high marks for doing things right. We can't say the same about the patrons, however, as most people we saw getting take-out pizzas and more walked in without masks to pay for and pick up their food. Then, we watched as a family of four walked in with no masks, and were seated at a properly distanced table. My wife asked the nice server how they deal with people who come in without masks. She told my wife the manager usually takes care of this, but he isn't here tonight. I get cussed out all day by people when I ask them to put on their masks. It struck us as unfair to put this high school or early college aged woman in the position to have to enforce a policy, and not surprising at all that rather than deal with it, she would choose to not create the conflict. Yet in the process, servers are putting themselves into potentially more danger. We thought we were done with our education when we left, but we had one more surprise coming.

CV401 started when we pulled off the highway to get some gas and use the restroom. We stopped at a well-lit gas and convenience store complex, and my wife waited in the car while my son and I went inside. We saw people in the store wearing no masks, standing very close to each other in the checkout queue, and bumping into each other in the crowded aisles. We quickly walked to the restrooms and left, wearing our masks of course. My wife told us that while we were in the store, she saw a dozen people walk in and walk out, not a single one wearing a mask. And yet the door signs were clear - masks required for entrance. We had graduated with honors in the class of finally figuring this out.

People are being blind to the effect of mask guidance, and this is slowing our economy and stopping ... [+] us from controlling virus spreading.

It looks like this: many people either dont know or dont care about the common sense guidance given to limit the spread of this virus. Many, but not all, of the oblivious people we saw were young. Yet this behavior is why the virus is not contained and likely wont be, why our kids cant safely go to school in a few weeks, and why the economy will stay mired in a quagmire. The fix is not changing what would should do, but actually doing it! On airplanes and in theme parks, places Ive also visited and written about, the enforcement is real and the consequences of non-compliance matter. While my wife was driving the final miles home, I read a story about Delta Airlines flight that returned to the gate when several passengers refused to wear their masks onboard. Bravo, Delta, as one way to change behavior is to provide a meaningful consequnce to non-compliance.

Yet while airlines and theme parks and likely other places can enforce rules or effectively not allow participation, its hard to ask a restaurant or small business owner to reject business when it has undoubtedly faced huge shortfalls in revenue over the past months. And why should the onus be on them anyway? We are all tired of being at home all of the time, wearing masks out, using hand sanitizer, and not seeing family and friends too. Whats worse is that people have died and will die from this virus. Our kids cannot return to school making us unable to return to work as normal. Come on, people. We can do this. If what we learned in these lessons is commonplace in the hotspots, its no wonder were losing this fight. Stop being selfish and put on your mask and wash your hands so we can all get back to life, work and school! As individuals we can enjoy our freedom while recognizing that we get this freedom because we all agree to behave in certain ways. Right now, some of that means wearing a mask and being conscious of others around you in regards to transmitting a scary virus. Compared to this simple trip, I cant wait to be on an airplane again to feel really safe!
