A controversial Canadian professor who gained fame rallying against political correctness has reportedly been infected with COVID-19 while staying in a Serbian hospital for over-reliance on drugs.

Dr Jordan Peterson, who shot to fame in 2016 after featuring in several highly-viewed videos where he discussed political correctness, flew to Russia earlier this year after developing a dependency on prescription drugs, The Sun reports.

Speaking to the British outlet, Mikhaila Peterson said her dad had contracted COVID-19 while seeking further treatment in a Serbian hospital where he was recovering from an over-reliance on Benzodiazepine.

She said he was put on a lot of antiviral drugs, which she didn't believe was necessary as he only had mild symptoms. The daughter also revealed he was suffering from pneumonia, which he had fought earlier this year.

"And so now we've had a step back in his recovery. Life is just not good, things are not good right now," she said.

"He'll get better, but he's definitely taken a step back and it's just really unfortunate... it's been a disaster."

Last year, Mikhaila posted a nine-minute video about her father's issues with anti-anxiety medication Clonazepam, which Healthline says is used to treat panic disorder.

He was prescribed the drug after becoming stressed when his wife was diagnosed with cancer and had to undergo several operations.

To try and wean himself off the drug, Jordan checked himself into a New York rehabilitation centre.

He shared the video in September saying: "At least life isn't dull".

Dr Peterson is also known for his self-help book 12 Rules for Life. While in New Zealand in 2019, he criticised gender quotas and moves to allow sex markers on birth certificates to be changed.

Among his controversial opinions are the views that women wear makeup in the workplace to be sexually provocative, white privilege is a "Marxist lie" and people shouldn't have to comply with what gender pronouns others wish to be called by.

Digitisation of Whole Slide Images (WSI) in pathology generate large amounts of gigapixel sized images and processing them needs high-performance computing. Training a deep learning network on a whole slide image at full resolution can be very challenging. With the increase in the processing power with the use of GPUs, there is a promise to train deep learning networks successfully, starting with training smaller regions of interest.

Another key aspect for training deep learning algorithms is the need for large amounts of labeled data. For supervised learning, a ground truth must first be included in the dataset to provide appropriate diagnostic context and this will be time-consuming. Obtaining adequately labeled data by experts is the key.

Digitisation in pathology supported by appropriate IT infrastructure is enabling Pathologists to work remotely without the need to wait for glass slides to be delivered and maintaining social distancing norms. The promise of Artificial Intelligence will only further accelerate the seamless integration of algorithms into the existing workflow. Corrina was owner surrendered when she was about 4-months-old. She is very friendly and has been raised around kids. Contact the City of Salem Animal Control in Kell to learn more about Corrina.

Roxy is about 4-years and is a Pyrenees/Pitbull mix. She is spayed and needs to be in a home with no small children or other animals. Her adoption fee at Williamson County Animal Control is $85.00.

Sicily is a 1 to 2-year-old Beagle mix who was rescued from an out of state shelter. That shelter was going to euthanize her, but now she has a second chance. She is up for adoption at Jefferson County Animal Control in Mt. Vernon.

Cain and Abel are 3-month-old Lab/Shepherd mixes who were rescued from a kill shelter in Tennesse. Their euthanasia date was set, but luckily a network of rescue groups helped them make it to safety at Saving Grace Canine Boot Camp in Mt. Vernon. The pair is scheduled for neuter and microchip, so they will soon be ready for adoption.

Lola is about 8-years-old and shy at first. She is spayed and housebroke and loves to be with you at all times. Lola is up for adoption at Wayne County Humane Society in Fairfield.

This Spanish Town Just Passed One of the Strictest No-Kill Policies for Stray Animals – LIVEKINDLY

San Fulgencio City Council just launched an improved service to manage the rescue and adoption of lost and found animals. This includes a no-kill policy for strays.

The city council contracted Anquimar, a company based in the Torre-Pacheco municipality, with managing stray animals within the Valencian region for the next year.

The new service focuses on the collection and handling of stray animals. It provides veterinary services such as microchipping, vaccines, castration, and passports. Photographs of animals within the service will be published on Anquimars website and social media to facilitate collections and adoptions.

We have wanted to fulfill the promise made to the citizens to change this service and guarantee that no type of sacrifice will be carried out except in very extreme cases, due to incurable illness or great suffering of the animal, Ana Mara Villena, Councillor for Animal Welfare, told The Olive Press, Spains leading expatriate newspaper.

Villena added that the town of San Fulgencio supports progressive animal welfare policies. Residents are encouraged to report any stray animals to the local police or the Department of Animal Welfare.

No-kill shelters avoid killing healthy or treatable animals, even when the facility becomes full. Like the shelters in San Fulgencio, many reserve euthanasia for terminally ill or suffering animals as a last resort. Critics of no-kill shelters suggest that this may lead to additional animals living on the street, leading to increased suffering.

According to the Humane Society, an animal welfare nonprofit, adoption is good for the adopters, the adoptee, and the shelters, too. It reduces the number of euthanizations and avoids contributing to puppy farms and other factory-farming style breeding facilities.

Many celebrities including Miley Cyrus, Snoop Dogg, Pamela Anderson, Ellen DeGeneres, George, Meghan Markle, and six-time Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton support shelters and the adopt-dont-shop ethos. Hamilton has adopted two dogs himself, including Roscoe and the late English bulldog Coco, who he saved from euthanasia.

In the U.S., the animal welfare nonprofit Best Friends Animal Society aims to help make the nation entirely no-kill by 2025. The number of euthanized shelter animals has fallen steadily. In 1984, approximately 17 million animals died shelters. As of 2019, that number has fallen to around 733,000.

Who Is Satoshi Nakamoto? An Introduction to Bitcoin’s …

The true identity of the creator of Bitcoin is one of the biggest mysteries in the modern world. Over the years many theories have popped up about who Satoshi Nakamoto really is, including a time traveler, a space alien, a rogue artificial intelligence or a front for groups such as the NSA, CIA and Yakuza. This article will present only the known facts about him and the more likely candidates who people suspect may be be the elusive figure.

The name Satoshi Nakamoto is an alias used by the person or entity who created Bitcoin to hide their true identity. He claims to be Japanese, born on April 5, 1975 and reside in Japan but people doubt this due to his native-level command of the English language as well as his preference of working hours more consistent with the U.K. time zone than Asia. Satoshi is a Japanese boys name that means one with wise ancestry and he is presumed to be male.

Nakamoto was the first to solve the double-spending problem for a decentralized digital currency, creating a new asset, the likes of which the world had never seen before: Bitcoin. In October 2008, Satoshi published the original whitepaper, describing his blueprint for a A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System. In January 2009 he released version 0.1 of the source code and launched the cryptocurrency by mining the genesis block. The founder continued to work on the software project for about another year and a half before disengaging from active development.

Nobody knows why Satoshi Nakamoto really decided to disappear without ever revealing himself or even cashing out some of the billions of dollars his early minted coins are now worth. This has provided fertile ground for speculation, educated guesses and outright conspiracy theories. Researchers have pored over the few data points left by the mysterious figure, trying to analyze his vocabulary, his way of writing and other clues to find some hints to his true identity.

Lets have a look at some of the names that have been put forward as possible Satoshis.

Dorian Nakamoto is the man with the friendly face most people now associate with the creator of Bitcoin. He was outed as Satoshi in March 2014 by Newsweek Magazine, which created a media frenzy around him and greatly disrupted his life. Dorian has denied having any connection to the development of cryptocurrency but eventually embraced a role of a mascot of sorts for the community.

The evidence cited by the magazine includes the fact that Dorian was actually born with the name Satoshi. He was trained as a physicist at Cal Poly University and worked as a systems engineer on classified defense projects and a computer engineer for technology and financial information services companies. Nakamoto also has libertarian tendencies and encouraged his daughter to have a business not under the governments thumb. And when he was first asked about Bitcoin, Nakamoto mistakenly thought it was a question about one of the classified projects he did for U.S. military contractors and said: I am no longer involved in that and I cannot discuss it. Hal Finney was a cryptographic pioneer, cypherpunk activist and the first person ever to receive a bitcoin transaction. Coincidentally or not, he also was a neighbor of Dorian Nakamoto. A Caltech engineering graduate and a developer for the PGP Corporation, he had the required skills to create a cryptocurrency from scratch and was the first person to improve the Bitcoin source code after Satoshi.

Finney died in August 2014 and was cryopreserved by the Alcor Life Extension Foundation. Hopefully one day the technology to revive him will be invented and he can provide more clarity on the issue if it has not been resolved by then. Nice Szabo, self-described Blockchain, cryptocurrency, and smart contracts pioneer, was in contact with like Hal Finney and his name often comes up as a possible Satoshi despite his claims otherwise. People who think he may be the creator of Bitcoin point out his proposal for a decentralized currency called bit gold from 2005 which uses similar concepts to those eventually perfected by Bitcoin. Craig Wright is mostly thought of as a conman these days but there was once a time when some of the most prominent names in the crypto community thought he was Satoshi. This abrasive character is an Australian academic and businessman who first emerged in December 2015 with reports in Wired and Gizmodo. Since then he tried to force people to accept him as the creator of Bitcoin in various unconvincing ways, such as lawsuits against his critics. Paul Le Roux is a much scarier Satoshi candidate who came to light from the legal cases around Wright. Le Roux is a former encryption software programmer and vicious cartel boss turned informant to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. After he was arrested in September 2012 for conspiracy to import narcotics, the criminal mastermind admitted to participating in seven murders. Other less discussed possible Satoshi candidates include cypherpunk pioneer Ian Grigg, Japanese mathematician Shinichi Mochizuki and tech mogul Elon Musk.

Elon Musk is mainly involved in the cryptocurrency sphere as a meme lord and casual troll, but he too had to deny being the creator of Bitcoin. As the founder of Paypal, Tesla, Spacex and a multitude of other companies in different fields, Musk probably has the ability to learn whatever skills he needs to create a cryptocurrency from scratch.

In November 2017 a former intern at Musks rocket company by the name of Sahil Gupta presented the case that his old boss was really the founder of Bitcoin. A Yale University computer science student at the time, he claimed that Musk had both a preference and an excellent grasp of the C++ programming language like Satoshi did.

Gupta also pointed out that the stability of the financial system was a major global concern in 2008, and Musk is someone who identifies the most urgent problems of our time and dedicates his time to solving them, suggesting he had the drive to solve the lack of trust in banks by creating a currency that doesnt need them. He also claimed the tech mogul had a deep understanding of economics and cryptography needed to write the Bitcoin whitepaper.

Musk, who is already a billionaire many times over thanks to Paypal and Tesla, also wouldnt be tempted to cash out his old coins in a hurry. But the massive stash of BTC and BCH could be used to kickstart the Martian economy once he is out of reach of the IRS on the surface of the red plant. So perhaps he is Satoshi after all and is just using humor to misdirect?

The name wasnt something that I spent months and months on deciding, and it doesnt mean anything related to what you see on the wikis. Rather, it was an attempt at privacy.

Id met Tim May back in the 80s when I was involved with DECUS under a number of SunOS groups. There were of course the black sheep groups such as the cypherpunks. For a start, I understand that anarchy is a utopian pipe-dream. Unfortunately, when you get groups of people who have little interaction with the real world, they are starting to believe stories and myths of a society that can exist without order. Worse, they start to believe in computerised order, the singularity, and that code is law. A few of us got on, but for the most part I was ridiculed by people who refused to understand that risk is a probabilistic ideal and can never be perfected and removed. More importantly, I was ridiculed by people with no idea of people or society.

There is a lot to be said for a classical Western education.

The moniker, Satoshi Nakamoto, was simply a way of being able to work and have some privacy in my life.

It was both a homage to Tominaga Nakamoto and a play on the second. The Economist had an article in 1988, and it featured the phoenix of rising money; in order to make some fun out of it, I used Ash (aka Satoshi) from the Pokemon fame.

Funny enough, most of the lawyers I speak to get it. When you actually explain the technology behind Bitcoin, those who have a grounding in law and economics start to see the system. Privacy and anonymity are polar opposites. I am Wesleyan. If you understand that, youll start to understand my philosophy on wealth. If you read Andrew Carnegies The Gospel of Wealth, and not just the title without moving forward, you may start to understand my long-term plans. Unlike Andrew Carnegie, I dont plan to retire in my 50s, nor in my 60s, nor in my 70s, nor even in my 80s.

There is a lot of work remaining to get Bitcoin to where I want it to be. I expect at least 30 years of work to do so. At that point, I am hoping it will be sufficiently advanced so that others can carry it forward. Having said so, within the year it will be locked with the protocol fixed and the asinine changes removed.

From here, once it is set in stone, it will remain set in stone.

Code is not law. Those lazy of thought and mind enough to believe that they can abrogate the responsibility that they have to the society they live in deserve all they get. In a democracy, you have the right to seek change. It does not mean people will agree with you. If you dont like the law, work to change it. The great men of history are not great because they sought to throw away the law, they are great as they sought to align it to freedom.

It is simple to say that things should be different.

It is difficult to stand up and take the brunt of the attacks that come to one who stands against the status quo. It is simple to say things should be different, but it is incredibly hard to have the courage to stand up and fight for change. There are many ways to seek change in our society.

Anarchy is not one of them and never can be. It is simply the path to destruction. It is the path to totalitarian control, a path that those who promote it seek. They do so as wolves leading lambs.

I knew that eventually I would no longer be able to be secret. I knew that my past and my involvement would start to come out, but I had hoped for a longer period of time. The irony that few saw is concealed in the name.

Tominaga was a merchant and philosopher. He wrote during the Tokugawa period of Japan.

The time for remaining in the shadows has passed. Tominaga taught us that concealment is the beginning of the habit of lying and stealing.

He was an anti-traditionalist, a logician, and an early capitalist in the days of mercantilism. He once said, our age today is one of corruption by liars and robbers. We remain in such an age. Money has been corrupted. We create synthetic systems of synthetic systems designed with nothing more than a goal to move numbers between systems. Money from Main Street to Wall Street and away from where its needed.

We see the same again in what we call crypto.

The frauds and the charlatans seek to pump false gains, and they say that what they do is about democratising freedom, and in fact they seek to remove the controls that protect the average person so that they can better engage in their Ponzi schemes and scams. Nobody wins by having ICOs. They are no different to the dematerialised penny shares that floated around the Internet in the 90s as web IPOs. Unfortunately, all too many of us are too young to remember or were not exposed enough to the Internet at the time.

People know very little about my life. My belief system aligns well with Nakamoto Tominagas. He promoted the doctrine of simplicity and honesty. It is not, as some such as Gandhi have promoted, the abandonment of technology but rather the use of technology as capital. Rather than seeking simply to escape from work, we find ways to improve what we are doing and extend it, to create more, to build, and to evolve.

The irony of those attacking and calling what Im doing a lie is that they do not even seem to understand the value of truth.

I always liked the Japanese way of thinking, the only philosophical theories of the Indian and Chinese Buddhists too profound and abstract to infiltrate into the minds and thoughts of the common people within early Japan. It led to a simplification but also, for quite some time, a difference in how intellectuals were perceived. As with the Roman Republic, the people at the time were not anti-intellectual but rather avoided the trap of intellectual society as they created based on logic and simple truths.

Tominaga was the Eastern Voltaire.

Nakamoto always said, concealment is the start of lying and stealing. I will say, anonymity in its truest form is the heart of crime and deception. Those seeking to tell you that anonymity is in any way like privacy are seeking to draw you into the shadows. They are the wolves who seek your fleece.

To create Bitcoin, I used the very system of thought it is designed to collapse. Those with socialist tendencies, and yes, anarchy is in all forms aligned to socialism, tend to think in terms of religious mysticism. If you have read Nakamoto Tominagas surviving works, you may come to understand the same. All of what I have said and done is hidden in plain sight. Such was the nature of my company, Panoopticrypt. It means, all that is hidden.

When you understand the difference between privacy and anonymity and how the latter destroys the former, you start to understand the deceptive call that the mystic makes on society in the pervasive and insidious call to a utopia.

Although I liked Tim, I knew in the 90s that I needed to find something else. I knew it would be my life goal, after reading Wei Dais juvenile and ill-conceived call for b-money:

I am fascinated by Tim Mays crypto-anarchy. Unlike the communities traditionally associated with the word anarchy, in a crypto-anarchy the government is not temporarily destroyed but permanently forbidden and permanently unnecessary. Its a community where the threat of violence is impotent because violence is impossible, and violence is impossible because its participants cannot be linked to their true names or physical locations.

Bitcoin was designed to scale to create something more than the casino that is finance. It is not the exchange that people called the market that allows growth in the creation of capital but rather the exchange of goods between individuals for consumption. A market is not the casino we call the exchange. Such lies need to end.

My revolution is not cypherpunk.

I took all they had, and I created something more. Bitcoin destroys anonymity in all its forms. It allows privacy, takes all that such people sought to do, their foolhardy desire to create a utopia, and changes it allowing Main Street, those that seek to work and create. The proletariat. The middle class. The average person seeking to create a life. It builds a society for them.

It is nobler to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune but as you take arms and oppose them. Not to die or to sleep, not to end. To see not calamity and long life, the whips and scorns of time are hard and challenge the patient merit as the unworthy take acts of pale thought against us.

The bare bodkin is insufficient to pierce the armour of the man with a passion to change the system corrupting us. Social media need no longer make conscious cowards of the soul, for when we go forward we will know that those who seek to attack us must face reality and cannot hide in the shadows of the great pith and little movement.

In the present world of finance, what Tominaga would have called a world of decadence, a place where many people are cheating and stealing and creating ICOs, it is intolerable that in allowing those who teach the lies, the utopian view that code is law and that a world can exist without order, we should let it occur and not stand to oppose it. Those people who say that they are bringing freedom as they seek what they call a democratisation of finance protect the corruption that seeps through it rather than oppose vices.

They all imitate a habit of secrecy. They create rules and hierarchies. They enact systems that are deplorable but operate through secret instructions and techno-mystical religious dogma designed not to create, not to build capital but to enable the transmission of secrecy. They tell you they seek truth, yet in reality they obscure and they cheat.

Bitcoin ends all of it. Not in minutes, not in days, and not quickly. None of it occurs in Internet time.

The path forward is already set in stone. And right now, I dont care whether you believe me. I have my own way of doing things, and most importantly, the first part is to understand that code is not law.

In the period coming up in the growth and development of what Im creating, you come to understand who I am and what I have created and why. In time, there wont even be any doubt, but it is my time and my way to choose.

Most importantly, Im not going to do anything in any way that aligns with the lies that are taught by the crypto community. I am going to teach you how flawed, how insidious, and how evil the heart of code as law really is. Im going to teach you about the frauds that they propagate, the lies that they use, and the totalitarian ends that they seek to bring as they try to enslave you.

The end of the long road that one steps on in seeking a world where code acts as law is one without humanity. Code is inflexible, there is no heart or soul in code. The strength of the law is that it can be flexible. It is not fixed and unalterable, and can bend.

I was a part of the movement that was the cypherpunks. Not because I agreed but because it needed to be stopped. When you understand Bitcoin, when you understand a sound system of money that acts to allow exchange privately but with an immutable evidence trail, you will start to understand why I created Bitcoin.

I created Bitcoin to ensure that the world the ignorant seek to create, the totalitarian utopia by those seeking a world based on an inflexible code-is-law algorithmic system, never evolves.

I spent 20 years designing Bitcoin. I started in 1998, and went through more iterations than I can ever hope to imagine and remember before finally coming up with something that worked. Welcome to freedom; it comes through a system that consumes utopians and spits them out. The system within Bitcoin is stronger than you believe, and it was designed to not work in many other ways. It takes nave idealism, and crushes it if it does not evolve into something of considered thought.

It no longer matters whether you like it; Bitcoin was carefully considered, and no blockchain-based system ever allows you to create the totalitarian utopia that is the ultimate dystopia of a world where code is law and order is crushed in anarchy.

Theidentityof the revered Satoshi Nakamoto has been a mystery since Bitcoins inception in 2009. Nakamoto is often imagined as a Ted Kaczynski type character a reclusive, complicated man with great intelligence and strongly held anti-establishment political beliefs. If the comparison is fair, then the Bitcoin whitepaper is to Satoshi what the manifesto is to the Unabomber, in Satoshis anarcho-capitalist act of subversive genius.

Shininchi Mochizuki certainly seems like he is capable of the genius behind Bitcoin, and his perseverance and personality seems to fit the model, as a reclusive contributor who uses systematic logical structures to revolutionise the world.

Nakamoto called the police to remove Newsweek from his property adding I am no longer involved in that and I cannot discuss itIts been turned over to other people. They are in charge of it now. I no longer have any connection. For Newsweek this was a smoking gun.

Nakamoto version Dorian is described as collecting model trains with a career shrouded in secrecy, having done classified work for major corporations and the U.S. Military. The mind boggles at such hinting. Mr Nakamoto the human does share some personality characteristics with who we imagine Satoshi to be. He is reported to be a libertarian, promoting independence from government, taxes and authority, a dedicated worker performing secretive security work. The Newsweek article Is somewhat compelling and he fits the archetype. He is also linked to another man on the list, living only blocks away from Hal Finney, himself a friend of Nick Szabo.

There are other comical explanations. A litigious Australian man,Craig Steven Wrightfeels deeply invested in the Bitcoin protocol, claiming to be Satoshi. His public performances belie a sense of resentment and superiority to the Blockchain community. There is also a sense of the firebrand preacher in Wright, of Fire, of trust-less de-centralised transactions, and of brimstone. It betrays his history as a religious man, of a NSW Uniting church Trustee and who had originally intended on being a man of the cloth.

"'Hello' He Lied"

His relationship toDavid Kleimanand their status as pioneers in Bitcoin Mining provides evidence that at the least, both men were significantly involved in the very early stages of Bitcoin.

Of things that are known and agreed upon about the early stages of Bitcoin, it can be established thatHal Finney, a pre-bitcoin cryptographic pioneer, was the second person after Satoshi to use and interpret the Bitcoin protocol. In the original test of the system, Finney was the recipient of ten coins, an amount worth almost $200,000 USD at the peak in November 2017. Finney corresponded with Nick Szabo and lived close to Dorian Nakamoto. Perhaps Satoshi the reclusive genius archetype is more than a lone individual?

The pirate-like Paul le Roux is another name put forward from time to time. Le Roux was born a year after Elon Musk, next-door to South Africa. When Elon Musk founded X.com in 1999, le Roux created E4M in the same year. The software was a free, open-source disk encryption software program for Microsoft Windows. This encryption service promised to keep data on computers safe, later updated anonymously to the more famous encryption service software TrueCrypto circa 2004.

If le Roux is Satoshi, it would mean he was beginning a planned expansion into illegal activities during the Global Financial Crises, creating Bitcoin in between drug-dealing, arms trafficking and money laundering. If he sounds busy that year, consider that Elon Musk had been CEO, majority owner and head rocket designer at SpaceX as well as starting Tesla and a solar panel installer at the same time.

So if the reason why Satoshi Nakamoto has not been heard of for so many years is because he is in jail, we can expect to hear from him circa 2041, when le Roux exits jail he earned as a result of his criminal history including drugs, murder and arms dealing, potentially casually creating digital gold in between sending mercenary hit-men on gold trading expeditions across Africa and Europe.

If true, it would take a convicted criminal, set on a similar path to Elon Musk from a similar place, and write him back with Musk as an individual who fundamentally changed human civilisation.

Middle name: Solotshi?

In Satoshis own recorded written history, He disapproves of His image as a mysterious shadowy figure and stops responding to one developer who accepted an invitation to speak at the CIA headquarters as a Bitcoin advocate. The mysterious Satoshi once again retreated to the shadows, hoping to disassociate themselves, or any other person, indeed any other single and living, breathing organism as the individual identity known as Satoshi who is behind the magical internet money known as Bitcoin. Is it possible that this was a role thrust upon, and denied by Nakamoto, Dorian?

In any case, it is likely that for such asystematicthinker, (who seeks to disassociate their real, individual identity from their ideas) that the idea of Bitcoin is manifested by its own virtues, of its own systematic design. In this conceptualisation, Bitcoin is a product of almost supernatural forces, not so much by the animal spirits of the market or the Invisible Hand of Adam Smith as by a transcendent act of self-creation in its creative but systematic technological protocol. In the perspective of it being a pure and systematic abstract idea that matches significant and real problems in the physical world, Bitcoin is created by Bitcoin.

Then is Bitcoin not invented, but discovered like gravity? Like relativity?

Perhaps one way of conceptualisingwho Satoshi is, may be that he is none of these people at all, or perhaps all of them (or remove who you will). The Bitcoin protocol represents the achievements of mankind, where the corruption of political power on central banking and manipulation of the money supply elicit a response, a solution! The corrupted system had threatened the existence of the modern financial system, and by virtue of that, a break-down of any global order at all. A sea-people-like civilisation threatening event.

Out of this threat came a large and interconnected set ofhighly capable and motivated peoplewho sacrificed their time and energy to take a risk on possibly having a solution to the problem of centralised forms of money. It is without a doubt that (most of) these (great) individuals deserve our respect. We will always hypothesise about the individual identity of the man we call Satoshi. But for each of these men who are not Satoshi, we are still left with contributions ofgenius, from people who take on the problems of the world, who work towards universal solutions for global problems, who do it on the shoulders of their forebearers with little conventional reward. There are many, many real people with identifiable names who are working on this project today who fit this description. This archetype represents some of the greatest sacrifices and greatest achievements of human endeavour. And even though it can go devastatingly wrong in the case of a man like Ted Kaczynski, for every Unabomber, there is at least one Satoshi.

Satoshi Nakamoto is the founder of Bitcoin and initial creator of the Original Bitcoin client. He has said in a P2P foundation profile[1] that he is from Japan. Beyond that, not much else is known about him and his identity. He has been working on the Bitcoin project since 2007.[2]

His involvement in the Bitcoin project had tapered and by late 2010 it has ended. The most recent messages reportedly indicate that Satoshi is "gone for good"[3].

He left some clues about why he is doing this project with the inclusion of the following text in the Genesis block, "The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks".

Some interesting quotes:

Yes, [we will not find a solution to political problems in cryptography,] but we can win a major battle in the arms race and gain a new territory offreedom for several years.

Governments are good at cutting off the heads of a centrally controllednetworks like Napster, but pure P2P networks like Gnutella and Tor seem to beholding their own.[4]

His identity and nationality are unknown.

He is entirely unknown outside of Bitcoin as far as anyone can tell, and his (never used) PGP key was created just months prior to the date of the genesis block. He seems to be very familiar with the cryptography mailing list, but there are no non-Bitcoin posts from him on it. He has used an email address from an anonymous mail hosting service (vistomail) as well as one from a free webmail account (gmx.com) and sends mail when connected via Tor. Some have speculated that his entire identity was created in advance in order to protect himself or the network. Perhaps he chose the name Satoshi because it can mean "wisdom" or "reason" and Nakamoto can mean "Central source".

Ultimately the design of Bitcoin and its use of cryptographic proof and fully open implementation is one that makes its creator, in a sense, irrelevant and only of interest for historical reasons.

US Hits Hong Kong Leader, Other Officials With Sanctions, Citing ‘Brutal Oppression’ – News On 6

The U.S. on Friday imposed sanctions on Hong Kong officials, including the pro-China leader of the government, accusing them of roles in squashing freedom in the former British colony. The Treasury Department announced sanctions on Carrie Lam, the leader of the government in Hong Kong, and other officials.

The sanctions are the latest in a string of actions the Trump administration has taken targeting China astensions between the two nations riseover trade disputes and the coronavirus.

"We will not stand by while the people of Hong Kong suffer brutal oppression at the hands of the Chinese Communist Party or its enablers," Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted.

The sanctions were authorized by an executive order that President Donald Trump signed recently to levy penalties against China for its efforts to curtail anti-government protesters in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong has long enjoyed civil liberties not seen elsewhere in mainland China because it is governed under a "one country, two systems" principle in place since it reverted to Chinese rule in 1997.

However, Beijing imposed asweeping "national security" lawon Hong Kong earlier this year, raising widespread concerns about the Chinese government cracking down on the anti-government protests.

Last week,four students were arrestedin Hong Kong in the first police operation to enforce the new law, officials said. Arrests have been made previously under the new law for banners and slogans displayed at protests.

"Three males and one female, age 16-21, who claimed to be students, have been arrested for breaching the #nationalsecuritylaw. They were suspected of secession by advocating #HKindependence. Investigation is underway," the Hong Kong policetweeted.

Prominent pro-democracy activistJoshua Wongsaid that one of those arrested was Tony Chung, a student activist, and that he was detained after writing a Facebook post about "#China's nationalism."

Hellpoint is a jerk to the player, and that’s the point – Polygon

Developers have been trying to capture the essence of FromSoftwares ultra-hard games since the launch of the first Dark Souls, but they never quite seem to get there.

Weve seen Souls-like games from Deck 13 (creators of The Surge), Souls-like Metroidvanias like Hollow Knight, third-person co-op shooter Souls-likes such as Remnant: From the Ashes, and weve even seen long-standing franchises transform into Souls-like games, like 2018s Darksiders 3.

These games take some inspiration from Dark Souls borrowing genre conventions like super difficult boss fights, penalties for death, and purposeful combat and twist them to add some new features, or maybe become a bit more friendly to new players.

But the recently released Hellpoint goes for FromSoftwares dark tone and obscure lore in a much stronger way, and it nails one of Dark Souls least copied features: being a constant, unrelenting asshole.

Hellpoint takes the horrific, sci-fi style of H.R. Giger and smashes it into the Dark Souls formula.

At the start of the game, my character wakes up on a space station. Im not human, I dont think. I cant tell if Im an android, a cyborg, or the Space Jockey from Alien. I know this is the future, but this space station could also be the biblical hell, or some form of it. Everywhere I go, the future horror and demon aesthetics continue to clash in a seemingly intentionally dissonant way similar to Doom (2016), but less cartoony.

I stumble into a room with my first enemy, naked, save for my weapon: a bladed pipe I found on the ground. I swing and take them out from behind. Hostile zombies hide in the corners, take slashes at me from the dark, spawn behind me, and attempt to knock me into dangerously placed pits.

I clear the room, taking a few hits, and use my Health Injector to recover. But the Health Injector only has a limited number of charges, and its the only way I can recover my health. I need to either fight or die if I want to get more.

I take an elevator up to the second floor and find a long hallway stretching left and right. Having played games like Hellpoint before, I inch my way into the doorway and use the camera to peer around the corner. To the right, I see a giant, hooded knight. It looks like some kind of angel, but I have a pretty good feeling that its hostile everything wants to kill me in Hellpoint.

The knight doesnt seem to see me, so I look to my left to check the other direction. Suddenly, a blue swirl of light appears under my feet, a sword stabs up at me from the ground, and Im dead. The knight has a ranged attack that strikes from below, it seems. And while I was watching my back, I wasnt watching my feet: a classic mistake.

I respawn along with all my enemies and I notice what looks like a clock next to my health, stamina, and mana bars. Its glowing red, where it had previously been a calm, dark color. Thinking it was odd, I moved forward, into the big zombie room, where I take the elevator to the second floor. But this time I found an eight-foot demon waiting for me.

Naturally, I panic. I sprint to the elevator button, call it, and run around the room waiting for it to arrive. The demon and the zombies follow behind me. When the elevator door slides open, I jump inside. I hold my breath until I hear the door close behind me. When I turn around, I see the demons hoof and staff clipping through the door.

So close.

Back on the second floor, I dont make the same mistake again. I loot my body and head left. While I avoid the knight walking around, I see statues that look identical to the knight in the hallway. Dark Souls tricked me like this before, so I slash at a few of them, trying to see if theyre alive. My weapon bounces off the stone. Im safe.

As I walk down the hall, I see the orange glow of a barrier. This is a boss, Im sure of it. As I run toward the barrier, I pass by another knight statue. Having tested the others already, I ignore it.

I approach the stairs, and what I thought was a statue turns and kills me in a single blow.

Hellpoint is an asshole; the kind of game that doesnt really care if youre having fun. And if you get paranoid enough to start avoiding its traps, you might just survive.

FromSoftwares titles have a long history of making players want to scream. Being constantly punished whenever you let your guard down isnt fun, but I beat games like these with a powerful pair of motivators: spite and pride.

Hellpoint relishes in that particular aspect of the Dark Souls formula. Getting knocked into a pit by an enemy in Hellpoint feels bad. Getting killed by a surprise knight twice in a row feels bad. But thats the point.

Hellpoint seems to want me to hate it so badly that Ill feel compelled to continue through the end, so I can flip it the double birds as I watch the credits. Souls games offer the same kind of self-satisfaction: the thrill of being able to conquer something that, unlike most video games, doesnt want to be conquered.

The force that compels me to conquer overly frustrating games like Dark Souls only works because I know I can be better each time I try. FromSoftware and Cradle Games know I can do better too, and thats why they push me. When I ran through that hall the second time, I avoided the knight that killed me with its bullshit floor swords. And when I went through the third time, I avoided the living statue. Like all video games, Hellpoint asks me to learn from my mistakes it just doesnt ask very nicely.

Hellpoint offers the few things you can only get from a Souls-game once: tricks, traps, and a sense of awe. Ive fallen victim to every Souls-trap in the book, but by virtue of learning how to proceed, I avoid them in subsequent playthroughs. Hellpoint is a new haunted house to trap and trick me.

Im not sure why Id ever play through Hellpoint a second time, not when I have a legion of similar, slightly more polished games to play again. But Im excited to see what the rest of the game has to offer, if only so I can angrily shout at every trick I fall for. And then, if I return, hopefully Ill be a little smarter, a little angrier, and a little less willing to take what I believe I see for granted.

The rumors are true. Rocksteady Studios has confirmed that it is working on a Suicide Squad game. The developer behind the Batman: Arkham series is expected to show off Suicide Squad at DC FanDome on August 22.

The Suicide Squad is a team of supervillains from DC Comics. There have been several iterations of them over the years, but they usually take the form of a task force employed by the government, under the leadership of Amanda Waller, to perform operations that were considered to be suicide runs or secret missions that the government otherwise wanted off the record. These were done in exchange for reduced sentences and parole, and members were implanted or fitted with bombs to ensure obedience.

Notable members of the Suicide Squad over the years have included Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Rick Flag Jr., King Shark, Deathstroke, Black Manta, Duela Dent (Jokers Daughter), Enchantress well, theres a lot.

Without an official reveal, we cant speculate as to what the gameplay will be like. Judging from Rocksteadys previous work with the Batman: Arkham series, you can likely expect brutal melee combat. Weve heard that it is a loot-based game similar in style to Marvels Avengers, but this is unconfirmed.

Eurogamer has reported that a contender for the final title of the game is Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which was conveniently recently registered as a web domain. You can guess what well be doing if that is indeed the final name.

For anyone who isnt familiar with the Justice League, theyre a team of superheroes that protect the earth. Founding members include Batman, Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Wonder Woman, and Superman. Over the years members like Green Arrow, Hawkman, Black Canary, Zatanna, Cyborg, Blue Beetle, and many more would join.

Other than that, we have very little to go on. Rocksteady will likely create an original story for its game that takes inspiration from some of the franchises most beloved comics. DC Comics ran a series called Justice League vs. Suicide Squad from 2016, which follows the Leagues discovery of the secret Suicide Squad and their effort to take them down as they see them as a threat to society.

Absolutely not. If you value your time and money at all, do not watch the Suicide Squad movie from 2016. I dont care that it won an Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Its awful. Go watch the Birds of Prey movie with Harley Quinn instead. You dont need to in order to understand the game, its just a good movie.

Suicide Squad is most likely coming to Xbox Series X and PS5. The life cycles of the Xbox One and PS4 are coming to an end with Microsoft and Sonys next-gen consoles right around the corner. We expect it to also hit PC, given that previous Rocksteady titles did as well.

Eurogamers report indicated that Suicide Squad was farther off from launch than the teased but as of yet unconfirmed Batman: Court of Owls game from Warner Bros. Montreal. As such, I wouldnt expect it to hit Xbox Series X, PC, or PS5 for a couple more years, maybe between 2021 and 2023.

Criminals Find a Way to Clone EMV Cards – Decipher

The shift from payment cards with magnetic stripes to EMV chips was supposed to stomp out card cloning, except cybercriminals appear to have figured out a workaround.

With magnetic stripe cards, it was relatively easy for criminals to collect the information and copy onto a cloned card. In contrast, the EMV chip on the payment card encrypted the card number and personally identifiable information, making it harder to steal the data and create a cloned card. The EMV technology is also designed to generate a unique encryption key for each transaction where the card is present, so even if the criminal somehow had the card information, the encryption key to validate the transaction would be missing.

However, many companies still havent fully implemented EMV card readers, five years after the switch to EMV cards. That means card issuers have had to encode the card information on both the magnetic stripe and the EMV chip so that people can use the card both waysinserting the card in to the card reader or swiping the card. This is necessary for those situations when the user is in a country that doesnt have EMV terminals, or has to use an older point-of-sale terminal.

There is a subtle difference, though, because the magnetic stripe contains the card verification value (CVV), the three-digit code that is frequently printed on the back of the card, and the chip stores the a different code called the integrated circuit card verification value (iCVV).

Cybercriminals have been creating counterfeit cards by copying the EMV detailsincluding the iCVVonto the magnetic stripe. Since some banks dont verify that the magnetic stripe has the CVV and that the EMV chip has the iCVV, the criminals are able to use the magnetic stripe cards containing the EMV data, said cybersecurity company Gemini Advisory.

EMV technology may have changed the underground market for CP [card-present] records, but EMV-Bypass Cloning has opened the door for cybercriminals to sidestep the central security features of EMV chips and channel a new source of CP cards back into the underground CP market, Gemini Advisory said.

The fact that this was possible to do has been known since 2008,but the assumption was that banks would shift all their customers to using EMV cards and that magnetic stripe cards would disappear because everyone would have EMV point-of-sale terminals. The official switchover was back in 2015, and the idea was that banks would verify transactions carefully until a time when magnetic stripe cards would no longer be needed. The fact that some banks were not verifying CVV and iCVV correctly created this loophole.

It is looking very likely that this technique is already being used, Gemini Advisory said. Analysts looked at two recent incidents where criminals breached point-of-sale systems at supermarket chain Key Food Stores and liquor store Mega Package Store and captured EMV data for more than 720,000 payment cards. The magnetic stripe clones with the stolen data could be used in card-present transactions if the issuing bank doesnt properly verify the CVV.

While analysts have not found dark web chatter highlighting EMV-Bypass Cloning or malware capable of capturing such data from EMV-enabled POS devices, the Key Food Stores and Mega Package Store breaches came from two unrelated dark web sources, Gemini Advisory said. This indicates that the technique used to compromise this data is likely spreading across different criminal groups.

Gemini Advisorys findings comes shortly after researchers at Cyber R&D lab examined Visa and MasterCards issued by 11 banks in the United States, United Kingdom, and a few other countries in the European Union and found four cards were not properly verified. Researchers were able to make transactions using counterfeit magnetic stripe cards that were generated with data collected from EMV chip cards because those card issuers did not catch the fact that the cards were using iCVV instead of CVV.

In the past, cybercriminals typically did not target EMV data because there wasnt a clear way to monetize the information. The fact that the criminals are increasingly trying to steal EMV data suggests that is no longer the case. For example, Visa issued a warning recently that known point-of-sale malware families such as Alina, Dexter, and TinyLoader have been stealing payment card data from EMV chip-enabled point-of-sale terminals, according to Brian Krebs of KrebsonSecurity.com.

This problem can be solved. The banks need to verify which code is being used when approving payment transactions.

A higher verification standard involving data checks would raise the threshold of access and undercut fraudulent card use, Gemini Advisory concluded. EMV-Bypass Cloning is dangerously effective, but through policy review and higher verification standards, card providers and financial institutions can close the security gaps that this method exploits and restore the security integrity of EMV chips.

One of the most overlooked factors of accelerated climate change is animal agriculture. Could changes to the human diet help us slow down the climate crisis?

Animal agriculture has long left its mark upon the earth. Forests have fallen and grasslands trampled in favor of crops and pastureland. Now, however, this sectors impacts are being felt in the atmosphere carrying troubling implications for every living thing on the planet.

The agriculture sector is one of the biggest drivers of anthropogenic meaning human-caused climate change. Animal agriculture, which sees the raising and processing of ruminants, poultry, and marine life, accounts for some of the biggest sources of greenhouse gasses. Global temperatures rise as forest cover decreases, and oceans warm as they absorb ever-more carbon dioxide.

Yet there are solutions to these problems among which is the adoption of plant-based diets. It is not too late for the world to take action against the perils of a changing climate, but time for action is now.

Practicing agriculture does not necessarily come naturally to us as a species. For much of human prehistory, people lived in societies oriented around hunting and gathering. The earliest signs of agriculture can be dated at around 12,000 years ago, yet since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, agriculture has taken on an entirely new face, adopting intensive practices such as concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) which foster truly heartbreaking conditions for farmworkers, animals, and surrounding communities alike.

Called humanitys greatest mistake by some due to the resulting hard labor, diminished nutrition, and social inequality brought by agriculture, this system of food production now presents the world with a new quandary: environmental destruction on scales that can no longer be ignored.

CAFOs produce enormous amounts of waste, which collect in vast open-air lagoons that can be breached by extreme weather events or gradually seep into groundwater. Water pollution from CAFOs can cause algal blooms which can devastate entire marine ecosystems. Air pollution is generated from CAFOs as manure is vaporized, sending toxic wafts through the air to surrounding communities.

Vast fields of monocrops also cause a host of environmental effects, including air pollution. Pesticides and herbicides are sprayed in liberal amounts, which can cause a host of debilitating illnesses, including cancers, for farmworkers and surrounding communities. Soil depletion is also a serious looming issue. Monocropping, along with the overuse of agrochemicals including synthetic fertilizers like nitrogen and phosphorus, are denying fields a fallow period or crop rotation has the effect of leeching soils of their nutrients. These practices render soils far less productive over time. It takes hundreds, if not thousands, of years for soils to become abundantly fertile again.

Out of all the human activities that cause climate change, agriculture is one of the biggest contributors. Estimates as of 2020 put the sectors global contributions at 37 percent. Below are a few key factors accounting for climate change emissions resulting from human-cased agriculture.

A full 50 percent of the worlds livable land meaning land that is ice-free and fertile is being used for agriculture. No other human activity takes up more space. In contrast, all urban areas account for around one percent of livable land use. A whopping 77 percent of agricultural land is dedicated to raising animals, including grazing and the land used to grow their feed, including vast monocrops of species like corn and soy. Surprisingly, this huge expenditure of resources and land use provides only 18 percent of the worlds calories.

Land used for any type of agriculture be it livestock or crops meant for people or animals is brought under cultivation by clearing forests and grasslands, which are carbon sinks due to their abilities to absorb carbon. Currently, forests consume roughly a quarter of all anthropogenic CO2, yet the more forests are slashed and burned to make way for pastureland or monocrops, the less carbon will be absorbed, resulting in accelerated climate change.

Farmed animals referred to as livestock generate over 14 percent of all anthropogenic emissions, with estimated totals hovering around seven gigatonnes of carbon dioxide emitted every year. The bulk of these emissions are due to raising cattle for meat and dairy, contributing 60 percent of total livestock emissions. These emissions are thanks to the vast amounts of resources cows consume, the land they require for pasture (in the case of beef cattle), and other manure they produce. Cow manure contains nitrous oxide and methane, the latter being one of the most potent greenhouse gasses due to its outsized ability to absorb heat.

Marine life, including fish, shellfish, shrimp, and other animals are taken from the seas in astronomical numbers. Nets, some of which are large enough to contain 12 jumbo jet airplanes, are dragged through the water or across the bottom of the seafloor, capturing everything in their path. Direct fishing activity, plus the energy expended to transport, process, and refrigerate carcasses amounted to an estimated total of 179 million tonnes of greenhouse gasses in 2011 and this number likely will continue to grow as demand for seafood increases.

In greenhouses designed to grow plants, the transparent glass structure allows sunlight into the greenhouse while preventing heat from escaping. The earths atmosphere functions in a similar way, with gas molecules acting like the glass. Certain gases are more effective at absorbing heat than others; these include methane, nitrous oxide, and perhaps the most infamous, carbon dioxide. These three gasses are among the main culprits of climatic warming and change caused by human activities.

One of the biggest drivers of global warming has been the release of carbon into the atmosphere due to the burning of fossil fuels such as natural gas, oil, and coal, which power many aspects of modern life. Even electric cars, which run on batteries and do not themselves generate carbon emissions, draw electricity from grids still run on fossil fuels (although the goal of using 100% renewable energy for electric grids is more achievable than ever). When carbon released from fossil fuel burning is released into the atmosphere, it binds with oxygen and forms carbon dioxide and begins trapping heat in the atmosphere. Because carbon emissions make up the vast majority (81 percent, as of 2018) of total greenhouse gases, they pose one of the gravest threats to climate stability.

Although carbon is the greatest emitted by volume, other greenhouse gases can be much more potent. For example, one ton of nitrous oxide emitted by agricultural processes including the use of nitrogen fertilizers in crop production is equivalent to nearly 300 tons of carbon dioxide.

Methane is approximately 30 times more potent in its ability to absorb and trap heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.

By far, the most effective way to reduce the animal agriculture sectors greenhouse gas footprint is to significantly reduce, and eventually eliminate animal agriculture. While this might sound extreme, it is the state of industrial animal agriculture characterized by inhumane CAFOs, waste lagoons teeming with pathogens and antibiotics, and requiring enormous land and feed inputs which is even more extreme.

This is not to say that eliminating animal agriculture is something easily accomplished. Demand will have to decrease, thanks to people turning to plant-based diets. The ease of adopting these diets is not the same for everyone, however. Many lower-income neighborhoods in the United States are classified as food deserts, where a lack of grocery stores forces people to endure extremely limited options, such as gas stations or fast-food restaurants.

People in nations like the United States who do not live in food deserts bear much of the responsibility for reducing demand for animal products. Fortunately, plant-based options abound to replace animals in a wide range of products, from cheese to milk to burgers and sausages. Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods are two of the leading companies in the plant-based meat sector, helping the idea of plant-based meats go mainstream and helping people understand that its possible to achieve the BBQ-worthy tastes without the climate side-effects. Plant-based meats use up to 99 percent less land and emit up to 90 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

Flying in planes or driving SUVs have long been understood as having negative impacts on the global climate. While these are certainly deserving of critique and change, the agriculture sector deserves time in the spotlight. If industrial agriculture continues to grow unchecked, global warming will increase with potentially disastrous impacts, the beginnings of which are being felt today. Methane, produced by livestock including sheep, goats, and cows, is a greenhouse gas with a terrific ability to trap heat in the atmosphere. The agriculture industry is responsible for fully 40 percent of the total anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions.

In order to curb global warming, and keep the global temperature increase below 1.5 degrees Celsius, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says that global emissions will need to be reduced by around 40 to 50 percent. According to the U.N., the only way to achieve these reductions is to drastically increase forested land which means reclaiming land currently under cultivation and to stop intrusions into existing forests.

Due to its profound impacts on the climate and environment around the world, agriculture may well be humanitys gravest mistake because it may be our undoing. Unless greenhouse gas emissions are seriously curbed, the world is going to be a far more difficult place to endure. Reducing demand for animal agriculture and adopting a plant-based diet is among the most important actions any individual can make.

That's easy for Netflix, which was first in the game; or Disney+, which leverages content catalog and a brand identity that's been nearly a century in the making.Beyond that, it gets a little more difficult for a streamer to stand out. From the start, CBS All Access has defined itself as the destination for new series in theStar Trekfranchise: it launched in 2017 withStar Trek: Discovery, a new space adventure.Star Trek: Picard, which picks back up with the belovedNext Generationcaptain after his retirement,followed in January of this year. This week sees the premiere ofStar Trek: Lower Decks, which... is a bit of a departure.

Up to now, the exploits chronicled in theStar Trekfranchise (including both seasons ofStar Trek: The Animated Series)have tended toward thrilling heroics. This animated series goes another way.For starters, Lower Decksis set on a Starfleet vessel the U.S.S. But the series doesn't even focus on the second-contactCerritosofficers: its main characters are the ensigns who live and work in the ship's titular bowels, doing tasks of commensurate crappiness.

Ensign Tendi (voice of Nol Wells), newly arrived medical trainee, is eager and geeky. Ensign Rutherford (Eugene Cordero), still getting used to his new cybernetic upgrades, is nearly as dedicated as Tendi, and her likeliest love interest; he's a superstar in Engineering. Ensign Boimler (Jack Quaid) is a teacher's pet, focused on moving up in the ranks, possibly to the exclusion of any wonderment he might be experiencing at, you know, his job as a space traveler. Constantly needling him is Ensign Mariner (Tawny Newsome, remaining in the cosmos after her stint in Netflix's Space Forcethis spring), a former officer who's been demoted; rather than being concerned about her career trajectory, sheloves her low-pressure lower-decks life. The series was created by Mike McMahan (Rick and Morty;Solar Opposites); other writers include Katie Krentz (Over The Garden Wall) andChris Kula (Close Enough), with Alex Kurtzman and Rod "Gene's Son" Roddenberry both keepers of theTrekflame across all the new series among its executive producers.

Boimler and Mariner, at the center of the story, are a classic sitcom odd couple:intense overachiever and cheerful slacker. Even if we didn't know anything about theStar Trekfranchise (and, nearly 60 years in, evenTrekabstainers are somewhat conversant with the basics just by osmosis), the pilot makes it clear early on which ensign's attitude Starfleet endorses: Captain Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) tells Boimler she knows Mariner is a goldbricker, ordering him to spy on her and report back on any incidents of Mariner failing to follow protocol. Almost immediately, while visiting an alien planet, Mariner departs from her orders. Boimler thinks she's selling residents Starfleet tech to enrich herself, but it turns out to be farm equipment they would get from Starfleetif they went through channels; it would just take much longer. Mariner's ways may not be Boimler's, but he decides not to snitch on her (after which we find out why Captain Freeman is taking such a personal interest in Mariner's performance).

Portraying Starfleet as a behemoth bogged down by pointless bureaucracies is actually kind of a subversive take on what is generally portrayed as an inter-galactic United Nations for a post-politics utopia. The first season ofPicardchallengedStarfleet orthodoxy too specifically, on a late-in-the-Next-Generation-film-franchise plot point involving androids whose superintelligence may have threatened humanity. But after two seasons of DCU's animated seriesHarley Quinn,a spectacularly violent, sexually adventurous, routinely profane, gleefully meta thrill ride (a side character appears in a "Release The Snyder Cut" t-shirt, for example),Lower Deckscan't help seeming tame by comparison. (The writers clearly know their Treklore, and there's ajoke in the second episode about a viral video of a "Vice-Admiral Gibson" falling off a stage that I bet was "Capt. Morgan Bateson," the character Kelsey Grammer played in a 1992 episode ofTNG, before a higher-up nixed it for being too mean.) It's not entirely fair to compare the two shows Lower Decksseems aimed at older kids and tweens, whereasHarley Quinnisabsolutely not for children but even in spirit,Lower Decksfeels, at least in these early episodes, a little too reverential toward the franchise.

That said, even over the first four episodes that were released to critics, the show did give the sense of unfolding into greater playfulness, and I was reminded that the first few episodes of another fine animatedsci-fi show,Futurama, were also a little tentative before the show's characters started to settle into what would be their ultimate forms. The more I saw of Lower Decks, the more I wanted to see. Congratulations, CBS All Access; you've managed to filch another couple of months' worth of subscription fees out of me.

Exposing Rodrigo Duterte’s War on the Free Press – Hyperallergic

On July 10 of this year, the Philippines House of Representatives voted 70-11 against the license renewal for ABS-CBN, the countrys largest media network. Maria Ressa, executive editor of Rappler, another Filipino news outlet, has faced spurious charges of cyber libel and tax evasion. She sees this as retribution for her four-year crusade against the dictatorial President Rodrigo Duterte, as well as his ever-growing army of online supporters who cheer on his sexism, homophobia, and violence.

It is against this bleak political landscape that director Ramona Diaz sets her new documentary A Thousand Cuts, in which Ressa and Rapplers fight against Dutertes war on the press takes center stage. Diaz and Ressa sat down with Hyperallergic for an interview over Zoom. It started with me wanting to make a film on Dutertes war on drugs, Diaz explains. The global audience would probably look at that and think it to be something that was affecting only people in the Philippines. Marias was the loudest voice against Duterte. She was questioning the government-aided dissemination of disinformation and connecting it with Dutertes impunity. The issue of disinformation is very global, and I wanted people all over the world to take note.

It all goes back to Silicon Valley, Ressa adds. A Thousand Cuts follows the Philippines 2019 legislative elections, when for the first time in 80 years, the opposition failed to secure even a single seat. It illuminates the Duterte governments use of propaganda and social media to lie to their citizens, obscuring what many of them know to be the truth. This post-truth reality is one many people are now far too familiar with, even outside the Philippines. When Facebook sells our most vulnerable data to the highest bidder, we no more have facts to hold each other accountable by. Accountability from the tech companies is a prerequisite to claim our democracies back. You do not have democracy if you dont have facts, Ressa asserts. In one scene, Duterte tells a Rappler journalist, You will be allowed to criticize us. But you will go to jail for your crimes. I was immediately reminded of the likes of Gauri Lankesh and Vikram Joshi, journalists back home in India who were murdered for speaking out against the countrys Hindu nationalist government.

Diazs previous film, Motherland (2017), focused on the worlds busiest maternity ward in Manilas Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital. Its concurrent themes of womens bodies and the states multi-pronged control over them are carried into A Thousand Cuts. Dutertes government directly encourages rape threats and the sexist dehumanization of Ressa and her colleagues, such as reporter Pia Ranada. At the same time, the state uses the hyper-sexualized bodies of women like pop star Mocha Uson to titillate citizens into voting their way. We must never get used to it, Diaz insists. If every time he opens his mouth, something misogynist comes out, it should shock us every time. Ressa sums up the tragic virulence of this scenario when she responds, Which he are you referring to? As much as Dutertes jokes may shock, the women in his crowds hooting in approval deal the heaviest blow. Misogyny is infuriating, but its even worse to see who willingly serves as its foot soldiers.

In a scene at a rally, Duterte uses his microphone to demonstrate a vulgar joke about his penis. It inescapably brings to mind a president who was plainly recorded boasting about grabbing women by their private parts. Misogyny, fascism, repression of the press, and fake news go hand in hand, and this is not solely a Filipino problem. They surround people in so many countries so densely that we can become dulled to their effects. A Thousand Cuts is a firm refusal to let unholy intersectional fascism be normalized. During a Rappler holiday party, Ressa tells her colleagues, We cannot become monsters when fighting monsters. A Thousand Cuts is a document of journalistic resistance to monsters and their methods of seducing people into inertness. To finish her toast, Ressa says:And the only thing that keeps us from becoming monsters is love.

A Thousand Cuts opens in virtual cinemas August 7.
