Guardia Civil execute huge drugs bust in the war on crime in Torrevieja – Euro Weekly News

The Guardia Civil made huge progress in the war against organised crime by taking down five very active drug outlets in Torrevieja.

THE criminal outfits were part of an organisation run by several brothers who had a team of drug dealers operating throughout the city.

In total, five homes were raided as part of this operation, four in Torrevieja and one in San Pedro del Pinatar, with a total of 115 grams of marijuana, 200 grams of a cutting substance, 1 precision scale, 3 doses of a doping substance, and 2 vehicles used to acquire more drugs from the outskirts of Murcia, all being seized. Upon thorough search of the properties, 11,000 in cash was also found.

An investigation began in October 2019 following a complaint from a neighbour about the amount of people moving in and out of a house, which happened at all hours of the day and night.

The extensive investigation eventually resulted in nine people being arrested, all between the ages of 25 and 50, and of Moroccan and Algerian nationalities.

They have all been charged and provisionally released pending trial.

Defining defunding the police to help our community – The CT Mirror

If we asked 25 different people what defund the police means, we would likely get 25 different definitions. Our definition focuses on where the investment should take place while recognizing that public safety is a priority.

A 2014 Pew Research study reporting 52% of African Americans and 63% of Hispanics responded that police do a good job of enforcing the law. While the numbers are not overwhelming and likely have changed due to recent events, they do indicate that there is a level of recognition for a need for a police force. The need for reform will have to wait for another day.

The terms defund and invest are used intentionally as defunding the police does not mean merely saving money. It means investing in our people and our communities to defeat systemic racism, to start saving one person at a time, and to redefine what our expectations of police are. A 2015 report commissioned by President Obama and led by Chief Charles Ramsey, former Commissioner of Philadelphia Police Department and recent consultant on community policing with the Bridgeport Police Department, said that an overarching goal for 21st century policing should promote programs that take a comprehensive and inclusive look at community-based initiatives that address core issues of poverty, education, health, and safety.

On a personal/professional level, we repeatedly have had conversations with police officers themselves who have expressed frustration at societys expectation that they act as social workers, mental health experts, substance abuse counselors, and mediators. At the top of their frustration list is when school resource officers are asked to intervene in a school discipline issue. Naturally, this is the same frustration we hear from urban teachers (who throw in parenting as one of their expectations) who work for an institution that has been defunded for years. We cant make the same mistake here and reduce funding without reinvesting those dollars in interventions that work..

Police are currently asked to intervene in many situations where a crime has yet to be committed. Mental health issues, substance abuse issues, domestic violence cases, pets in trees or distress, health emergencies are all situations where a trained professional may be a better option. And they receive very little training for these activities.

In fact, if our conversations with police officers tell us how they feel about working on these issues they will generally tell you they are not trained to perform them and that they are the most difficult cases for them. So why not transfer these incidents to mental health, substance abuse, social welfare, healthcare professionals where they will be treated by skilled professionals in the field.

Unfortunately, data show Black and brown people are more likely to be treated harshly by law enforcement than white people. The question for us is not to defund the police, but to examine all the ways police are involved in peoples lives and determine their appropriateness and whether they might be handled more effectively by trained professionals and do not result in an arrest.

In our research, we have recently read about Cahoots, a partnership between the Eugene, Oregon Police Department and a community agency that has saved the city $8.5 million dollars annually with the real impact on individuals being transformational. New Orleans has recently outsourced minor traffic accidents to a private company at no cost to the city. Many police departments such as West Palm Beach, Fla. are piloting an Australian co-responding model with a social worker or substance abuse counselor who can respond to overdoses, domestic abuses, or other mental health situations.

We all know that substance abuse/mental health issues are better dealt with by behavioral health specialists who are trained to de-escalate conflicts that may arise because of the substance abuse or mental health issue. Unfortunately, substance abuse has been the primary reason the United States imprisons more people than any country in the world.

According to the Brennan Center for Justice, over 70 million Americans have a criminal record and we know the War on Drugs has focused most of its attention on Black and brown communities. Further strengthening the treatment-versus-incarceration argument is the National Institute on Drug Abuses finding that $1 invested in addiction treatment results in $12 in savings on the justice system side.

The actions of young people with developmental disabilities are often misconstrued to mimic criminal behavior. For example, autistic children may be either overly affectionate, which looks like wrestling, or they cant be touched because when you touch them they strike out; both of which they may be arrested instead of more benign and appropriate treatment.

School resource officers or SROs are called to intervene in all sorts of disturbances at school better handled by teachers, administrators, guidance counselors and social workers. Bridgeport Police have removed the physical presence of SROs in schools for a few years now, which has resulted in many fewer school arrests and much more appropriate intervention.

Police also are called whenever there is a health emergency; they accompany firefighters to fires; they respond to lost pets or pets up trees; etc. We have repeatedly heard the narrative backed by multiple research papers about Black people being stopped for broken tail lights, lost mirrors, simply driving while Black or simply looking suspicious. We have seen the narratives of the next step of going for their license and registration that escalate into arrests and even death like Philando Castile.

By utilizing alternative options as discussed above, we prevent and avoid a number of potential negative interactions between police and the community. We provide the space for the police to serve as public safety officers, the space for social workers and mental health counselors to support and treat mental illness, and the space for substance abuse counselors to treat addiction. All professionals get to do what they are good at, what they are trained for, and, most importantly, what they are passionate about.

By ensuring the right professional responds, we keep citizens out of the justice system and reduce the likelihood of negative interaction with the police that sometimes escalates into criminal behavior. Our community is therefore safer. These investments can be incorporated as a team and community response alongside and in partnership with the police and will result in a safer and healthier community.

All of this results in a safer, happier, healthier community and we can agree that that outcome is not a political argument. Our communities need a police force. We just need it to look differently.

COVID-19 hospitalizations remain low in Maine for another week – Press Herald

Hospitalizations for COVID-19 in Maine remained at low levels this week, and slightly below those of last week.

The key metric, which typically lags exposure to the disease by one to three weeks, had generally fallen for more than a month and has been at low levels since the end of May, even as summer tourism season has progressed here and the disease has surged to crisis levels in other parts of the country.

Maine Medical Center, which has handled nearly half the states coronavirus burden through most of the crisis, had an average of 4.7 confirmed COVID-19 inpatients each day for the week ending Thursday, up slightly from 4.6 last week but far below its peak daily census counts of 35 set on both April 7 and May 25.

Central Maine Medical Center had an average of 3.3 COVID-19 inpatients a day, essentially unchanged from 3.4 last week. The Lewiston hospital has now seen the third largest pandemic inpatient burden overall after Maine Med and Southern Maine Health Care Medical Center in Biddeford. But the citys other hospital, St. Marys, hasnt had a COVID-19 inpatient since July 26.

Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick had its busiest week since May with 1.4 COVID-19 inpatients a day but ended the period with no inpatients.

Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor hasnt had such a patient since July 31 after having at least one each day since the middle of June. MaineGeneral in Augusta, which had been the third most affected hospital in the state, hasnt had an inpatient with the disease since July 27.

Portlands Mercy Hospital had an average of 0.7 inpatients a day for the period, while York Countys largest hospital, SMHC Medical Center, had an average of 0.6 per day, up slightly from 0.3 the previous week.

York Hospital in York hasnt reported a COVID-19 inpatient since June 22.

Bridgton Hospital had an average of 0.9 such inpatients a day after not having one since June 22, but three other hospitals that had reported having patients during June Rumford, and Waldo in Belfast and Franklin Memorial in Farmington had none for the week.

Hospitalizations can end three ways: recovery, death or transfer to another facility. The data does not include outpatients or inpatients who were suspected of having the virus but never tested.

The Press Heralds survey is for the seven days ending Aug. 6. It compiles data received directly from the hospitals and hospital networks. It includes most, but not all, of the states hospitals, but accounts for the vast majority of the statewide hospitalizations reported each week by the Maine CDC.

Bill Macfadyen: Santa Barbara Countys Big COVID-19 Error Isnt the Only Hole In Its Reporting – Noozhawk

Viva la Fiesta!

If the absence of Old Spanish Days festivities is not enough to throw you off, Im really going to confuse you with this weeks Best of Bill column. Or maybe confuse you more than I usually do.

Longtime readers know my weekly column is a compilation of and my commentary on Noozhawks Top 5 most-read stories of the previous seven days, as tracked by our Google Analytics. This week, by the way, we had an audience of 165,653 readers, thank you very much.

Our top story is a very cool one, and Im excited to share why. But its our third most-read story that actually is our most important one, given the ongoing catastrophe that is taking such a massive toll on almost every aspect of our lives.

So Im going to invoke the rarely used Publishers Prerogative and start the Top 5 with No. 3 before introducing No. 1. Consider the number crunching a warmup for Major League Baseballs 2020 playoff schedule scheme.

Making sense of Santa Barbara Countys inconsistent, nontransparent and often mystifying reporting of its COVID-19 data has been an enduring frustration in Noozhawks coverage of the coronavirus crisis.

So it really was no surprise to us when Dr. Van Do-Reynoso, director of the county Public Health Department, announced July 31 that her agency had underreported the number of COVID-19 deaths by 28.

Thats right, 28 dead county residents more than two dozen of our neighbors were simply never entered into the system.

As our Josh Molina first reported, the mistake was discovered when the county Vital Records Office noticed a discrepancy between the number of death certificates issued and the deaths reported on the countys own website.

Unfortunately, we have a serious data problem, Second District Supervisor Gregg Hart, chairman of the Board of Supervisors, said in an understatement.

For the past month, the Public Health Department has underreported the number of COVID-19 deaths in Santa Barbara County.

Thats not the half of it.

Noozhawks news team keeps a very detailed daily spreadsheet of all the public COVID-19 data were tracking, but its exceedingly difficult to reconcile largely because of the county.

Over the last few months, our editors and reporters have been much more insistent and unyielding with officials about county reporting irregularities. To their credit, senior county officials have been reaching out to our team about ways they can better communicate and deliver what we need to provide you with a complete picture of what our community is up against.

Talk about two steps forward, one step back.

This week, our editors noticed the county had reported an average of 430 COVID-19 tests a day over the last few days, well below the normal total, so they pressed for more details about that specifically. For good measure, they tossed in additional questions to try to get a better sense of how well the testing system is working something they do on a regular basis.

Well let you know when we find out the answers to those simple questions but, at this stage of a pandemic that started more than six months ago, the fact that such basic information is not readily available is as alarming as it is unacceptable.

The county also is withholding the date of the latest coronavirus death, with an absurd explanation that officials are exploring whether such information can even be released under HIPAA regulations.

Let me be clear: There is no reason for the county to be hiding behind the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 over a date of death.

Public agencies release basic death information every single day, as you know from reading our reporting on fatal car crashes. There may be aspects of a death that are caught up in privacy or other issues, but not the fact that a guy died on a Tuesday.

I tell you this to illustrate just how challenging it can be for the news media to do its basic job our constitutional right of keeping you informed, which is your constitutional right to know. This involves you as much as it does Noozhawk.

In the absence of a widespread vaccine, what appears to be the most effective defense against COVID-19 is entirely, and scarily, up to you and me. As I wrote in last weeks Best of Bill column, that means wearing masks responsibly, keeping our distance, washing our hands, and staying home if were compromised or feeling sick.

But if that responsibility is going to fall to us, Santa Barbara Countys erratic hoarding of coronavirus information has got to stop. It needs to start sharing everything it knows so we, the public, can make fully informed decisions on how best to protect ourselves and others.

As with a lifting fog, there have been glimpses of what Santa Barbara County officials can do if they choose to. Sunshine benefits everyone.

To help you better understand the blizzard of numbers and the processes involved with compiling them, Noozhawk managing editor Giana Magnoli put together two useful guides that already have been a big hit with readers:

Noozhawks Guide to Understanding Santa Barbara County Public Health COVID-19 Data

Each August, the Earth drifts through a debris cloud left behind by the passing Comet Swift-Tuttle. As bits of pebbles and even dust particles some no larger than a grain of sand slam into the atmosphere, they burn up in bright streaks and even fireballs, creating a spectacular display known as the Perseid meteor shower.

As our astronomy columnist, Dennis Mammana, reported Aug. 2, the peak of this years celestial extravaganza will be late Aug. 11 and the early morning hours of Aug. 12 when up to 100 visible meteors per hour are likely to appear weather and light permitting, of course.

Dennis lives in the stargazing-advantageous Anza-Borrego Desert in the San Diego County backcountry, but Santa Barbara County is not that far behind when it comes to dark skies. And no special equipment or skills are needed; just look up.

While Dennis has always been one of Noozhawks most popular columnists, the traffic on his Aug. 2 column was out of this world. Its already claimed the No. 2 spot in our 2020 most-read analytics with 66,000-plus reads and counting.

Although the Perseids come around just once a year, you can read Dennis astronomical insights each week when we post a new column on Sunday afternoons. And dont worry, theres plenty of space for what hes writing about.

My friend, Brian Goebel, is not an epidemiologist, or a physician or a public health official. But he is a public policy professional with a passion for data analysis.

Noozhawk readers have come to trust him as hes consistently written correctly, accurately and matter-of-factly about coronavirus trends and tendencies. Hes done that by focusing on a few key data points, running the modeling and explaining his work. In the old days, I think that was called SCIENCE.

Brians Aug. 2 column outlined how California had again flattened the hospitalization curve after an extended spike in cases. But he made three bonus points that merit more consideration if were going to move forward with our lives and livelihoods.

Most important, sensible public health measures i.e. masks and social distancing and precision-based business closures all work. Theyre also preferable to a threatened second statewide stay-at-home order, which would be increasingly problematic and far less likely to be followed six months into the pandemics sweeping upheaval.

Second, based on the latest run of data, which essentially covered June and July, the numbers indicate that much greater economic activity is possible as we learn to co-exist with the ever-present contagion.

Finally, its time to re-evaluate and revise testing protocols to more precisely measure COVID-19s community spread.

According to the state Department of Public Health, the current protocols were developed to facilitate medical evaluation of persons with symptoms of COVID-19 as well as efforts by public health agencies and essential employers to prevent and control the spread.

Brian argues that there should be more testing of a larger cross-section of the statewide population, not less, because the current limited testing data are not as accurate a measure of community transmission. He goes deeper into the details than Im going to here, but please do read his column for more information.

The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department reported 215 new coronavirus infections on Aug. 1, a significant increase after a week of steady declines.

Our Tom Bolton reported that local COVID-19 hospitalizations rose to 87 from 85 that day, but the number of intensive-care unit patients decreased to 26 from 28.

As of Aug. 6, the number of confirmed cases in the county stood at 6,652 with 68 deaths, a 98.97 percent survivability rate.

In a development rich in irony, a Florida cannabis corporation that is publicly traded on the Canadian stock exchange has acquired a controlling interest in one of Santa Barbaras three retail marijuana dispensaries.

As our Josh Molina reported Aug. 2, Boca Raton, Florida-based Jushi bought the multimillion-dollar controlling interest in the operating license from Golden State Greens, which itself is headquartered in San Diego. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Jushi is moving full speed ahead on building out the new Beyond / Hello dispensary at 3516 State St., across from Loreto Plaza. A late September opening is expected.

Santa Barbara is a perfect example of what we are looking for in acquisition in the California market, Michael Perlman, executive vice president of investor relations & treasury, told Josh. The population is affluent.

He seemed to imply that Santa Barbaras other two dispensaries locally owned Coastal Dispensary and Farmacy target tourists.

We want to be known in the Santa Barbara market as the company that is focused on the local people, giving them a differentiated shopping experience both online and in stores, Perlman said.

Time will tell but Im with City Councilwoman Kristen Sneddon, who found out from Josh that the hard-fought license issued by the City of Santa Barbara had changed ownership.

Its really important that the integrity of the scoring process is impartial and it favors local vendors, she said. I am not a fan of the expansion of this industry. It is important that we prioritize local vendors.

This was not my expectation.

The 4 Mistakes Made by the US in COVID-19 Response – MD Magazine

David Ho, MD, does not mince words on the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

In fact, the world-leading virologist begun a discussion with HCPLive on the matter with as frank an assessment as there could be: the US is in a disastrous situation right now.

The country is doing very poorly, Ho, an HIV/AIDS pioneer researcher and founding director of the Columbia University Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center, said. What were confronting here in the US is what we would have expected in a developing country, not a rich and strong nation.

These are among the opening statements Ho had on Lungcast, the new monthly respiratory health podcast from HCPLive and the American Lung Association (ALA). As the shows very first guest, Ho set a stage for addressing COVID-19 in both public health and scientific parametersby first stressing its burden and reach thus far.

As he stressed, despite the US making up about 4% of the worlds population, approximately one-quarter of all COVID-19 cases and mortality apiece are from US citizens.

Though Hoalong with Lungcast host and ALA chief medical officer Al Rizzo, MDspent the majority of the episode discussing strategies to resolve COVID-19, he also presented a quartet of reasons that explain just how the US failed in its initial response, leading to this current disastrous situation.

When asked for perspective on the regulatory and advisory infrastructures in place for COVID-19 responsefrom the World Health Organization (WHO) to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)Ho offered lesser criticism than the agencies have heard in recent months.

That said, he did point to early failures in facilitating, regulating, and distributing effective SARS-Cov-2 assays at the very initial US spread. He estimated the US lost about 1-2 months in progress from use of inaccurate testing kits alone.

The issue continues todayin both inadequate testing use, and limited supply of reliable assays. As such, the country is still reactive to what its true burden of infection is.

This also hinders the US capability in establishing proactive measures of data collection, including contact tracing, a practice Ho praised regions of western Europe in executing early on.

Contact tracing is indeed a very necessary practice to work ahead of the virusto actually set strategies that will definitely reduce its spread and isolate strains from the public. But the country is nowhere near position where it could be done feasibly.

At 70,000 cases per day, its pointless, Ho said.

A portion of the US population, as well some key legislators, emphasized the vitality of the economy as a key issue when stay-at-home orders and business closures were enforced at the beginning of the pandemic.

This issue was mostly unique to the USat least in its severity of rhetoric. What was lost in these mixed priorities, or was potentially harmed due to their presence, was the matter of comprehensive public health response.

Ho stressed the need for a politically-based message and commitment toward bringing the virus under control.

He understood the significance of a reopened and mostly returned society for the sake of the countrys economic health, but, there is not going to be economic health without public health.

Unlike most countries with better control of new daily COVID-19 cases, the US has been susceptible to great, regional spikes which have continually and sharply raised the national wave.

Already, theres been 2 different peaks in the first US COVID-19 waveand descents from both waves have not been substantial enough to warrant progress toward reduced social distancing responses.

As Ho explained, its like pushing a rock up a hillmistakes could mean restarting the entire process.

For every week we slip, it would take 4-6 weeks to regain position, he explained.

Overall, I dont think were very good at prevention, Ho said.

From influenza (flu) vaccination dissent, to public health response among non-viral crisesskyrocketing obesity and diabetes rates, among other metrics of overall healththe US has continually failed at reducing disease threats.

The issue is one that expands beyond having effective prophylaxes and access to preventive care; it reaches community health and clinical outreach to at-risk populations. Failed healthcare prevention is an indictment of resourcing, education, research, pharmacological development, and prioritization.

Overcoming that failure is not simple, but very necessary. The earliest opportunity the US will get will be in vaccine candidateswill they seek preventive care?

It requires a lot of persistence and tenacity, Ho said. For the entire public to buy into that is going to be a struggle, but one we must take on.

Fashion Industry Explores Virtual Reality in Post-Covid World – TechRound

Fashion brands are staying creative in the wake of the pandemic with many switching to virtual reality solutions.

The advent of virtual reality showrooms has been a game-changer for the fashion industry. With premium technology, VR companies are able to customise virtual showrooms that are an exact replica of a brands physical space. The technology allows buyers to browse the showroom in a 360-degree way and even view individual garments up close. Buyers have access to fabric texture, price information and catwalk footage.

The coronavirus pandemic has led to many changes in the fashion industry. The last few months saw shop closures, increased demand for loungewear, mask fashion and soaring online sales. With regard to high fashion, virtual reality became the obvious solution for replacing showrooms. BrandLab, a virtual reality showroom developer, benefited from this trend. Dan OConnell, the companys co-founder, stated when COVID hit, all of a sudden we were the number one solution. For brands, the ability to maintain customer relationships in a world where they could not meet face-to-face was very important. We are the only business to offer this type of immersive and interactive showroom appointment.

BrandLab, a Welsh company, experienced a 500% growth in the wake of the coronavirus with a 2000% increase in new customer enquiries. Virtual reality showroom technology is already being used by many big brands including Barbour and BIBA.

Whilst this is not a replacement for physical showrooms, it can increase the industrys productivity. OConnell said that buyers are often restricted to viewing 10 or so collections, back-to-back, over the course of two days at trade shows. Through a virtual showroom, they could now see up to 200 in this time and then visit the ones they have particular interest in. It will also allow the industry to become more inclusive. Buyers can engage with a wider range of designers they might never have had the time for before.

However, it is not just the fashion world adopting this technology. Many industries are benefiting from this new trend. The future looks to be full of virtual reality solutions for everything from galleries to car showrooms to shopping centres.

This may also act as a sustainable solution. Typically, fashion buyers can take up to 80 flights a year visiting showrooms so virtual reality will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the fashion industry.

Virtual reality tours capturing Indigenous tourism sites and facilities – TimminsToday

Virtual reality users will soon be able to get "a lifelike" experience ofwhat Indigenous tourism in Ontariohas to offer.

ORIGINhas partnered with Indigenous Tourism Ontario (ITO) to support Indigenous businesses and create VR tours as travel restrictions have been put in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our technology will help users understand exactly what they can expect from a tourism experience, said ORIGIN's owner Melissa Hardy-Giles. Were proud to highlight, capture and preserve Indigenous knowledge and tourism, and promote them. First, to all Ontarians, Canadians and then other countries as restrictions lift.

WithOculus headsets and an ImmersiveLink Cultural App, users will be immersed in360-degree virtual reality tours. Hardy-Giles said the company, which is Indigenous owned, has its own film crew that will be travelling to different Indigenous tourism sites and facilities to createthe modules.

Using our ImmersiveLink system, we will be creating brief virtual reality tours, she said. Mass tourism operation is struggling since the pandemic and may never be the same, unfortunately, such as Disney theme parks. However, this is now giving micro-tourism and small operations an opportunity.

Hardy-Giles said the details of the project are still in the works but the hope is to have VR tours available "later on thisyear."

"Congratulations to ITO and ORIGIN on this partnership that will deliver innovative solutions for Indigenous tourism and hospitality operators who have been hit-hard by the COVID-19 pandemic," Minister of Indigenous Affairs Greg Rickford said in a news release."This use of technology will promote Indigenous tourism and create opportunities and economic growth for Indigenous businesses as our economy restarts and recovers."

Companies are adopting AR and VR to adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic – TechRepublic

Two virtual reality and augmented reality experts discuss the ways in which organizations are using the technologies in their businesses.

Tech is reshaping our business and personal lives in more ways than ever. Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are playing bigger roles in companies as leaders look for ways to keep employees connected at a safe distance. TechRepublic's Karen Roby talked with Rishi Ranjan, and Digam Panifrahi, co-founders of GridRaster, about the use cases for immersive mixed reality. The following is an edited transcript of their conversation.

SEE: TechRepublic Premium editorial calendar: IT policies, checklists, toolkits, and research for download (TechRepublic Premium)

Dijam Panifrahi: This is a medium which allows you to do something, the next best thing you can do in terms of being physically there. And this is an excellent medium that solves that problem right now. What the restrictions are there around traveling and people operating from houses, and you still need to have those businesses keep running, and this is a medium providing excellent opportunities.

A few of the use cases where this has been really amazing has been trying to view and repair things remotely. All of a sudden, all these complex machines, whether you are talking in the medical industry or aerospace and defense automotive, this is being now serviced remotely.

This is made possible only because of augmented reality and virtual reality. Otherwise, it would have been a big struggle with all that restriction around travel and social distancing norms and all being in place. The other has been on the training front. There's nothing which is as good, you can't do anything better than train people in a virtual environment like with VR and AR, which has been huge in terms of keeping those businesses running. This is at least a couple of use cases which have been absolutely tremendous to keep many of those companies. You will see, whether it's Nestle, or whether it's Ford take any industry, big companies over there, they have been leveraging this technology to keep things moving during this pandemic.

Karen Roby: Talk about some of the specific ways you're seeing this with training and other ways to keep people connected from a safe distance.

Rishi Ranjan: Just to capture that, we are very focused right now on aerospace, automotive, and defense manufacturing. In the case of training, our customers cannot bring their customers, their employees, on premise. There are restrictions all the time that only you can run at 10% capacity. Now, with mixed reality their employees can start training on all these complex machines in their living rooms. And they expect these whole work-from-home restrictions to at least remain there for one and a half year more. The lapses and everything are out.

Now, they're seeing that they don't have to really slow down on any front on training. They can train on a very complex space, spaceships, cars. All of those, they can keep training. They can even keep designing all of those things without any significant impact on them. And you can see that similar thing in medical, that now doctors cannot travel, but now the people who are remote, they can get hands-on help remotely from the doctors who are exported. Again, we are not focused on those verticals right now. But we know that very similar use cases are being used in the other workspaces.

Karen Roby: What are some of the challenges that companies face when trying to implement this type of technology?

Rishi Ranjan: The first thing is that mixed reality is new. So again, in some of the verticals, especially in the defense sector, it has been used for 30 to 40 years. So they are very, very used to using these. But, in other ones the devices are just getting used. They are just getting available right now. And so a lot of those use cases, people are trying to ramp up fast, but it's a new medium. We have never seen this medium being used before. So, just content creation is a big thing. The devices are not fully there. You can use it in certain use cases, but it's not that you can use it in any use cases yet. But those are the restrictions out there.

SEE: Robotics in the enterprise (free PDF) (TechRepublic)

The scaling of the problem is that when you look at the devices, these are screens sitting on your face so it's very critical they should be light. If you have to carry a one-pound device on your face, your neck will start hurting after 30 minutes. Things are moving in that direction in the end. But, the problem is that the experience of the spatial augmentation that we are trying to bring, it needs a lot of compute, a lot of processing, before you can provide that help to the user. And that's where we come in, that we bring all of those lower compute loads on the cloud.

But we believe the device to be much lighter. You don't have to tether it to your PC and all those things to use it. But still, that device side, also, devices are improving. There are known rumors that Apple is working on the glasses, which will hopefully come in a couple of years and it will become the coolest. But those will go ahead and remove a lot of the friction that still people are feeling as a new medium.

But then creating the content, how do you pay the content as to that? Also, the friction points that people are facing. Some of the verticals we're in the defense sector, we have seen that people have been using it for tens of years. So, they're much more advanced. And that is where a lot of those learnings will come in and it will help the ecosystem. But some of the other verticals where they're just starting to use and trying to catch up very fast, those friction points are still there.

Karen Roby: I know we talked about some of the larger companies like Nestle and groups like that. But when you talk about smaller businesses, smaller companies that have much smaller budgets. And digital transformation for some of them, they're just moving through that right now and being forced to, because of the pandemic. How do you see those smaller companies and businesses coming into the fold with AR and VR? Do you see them starting to see the benefit and trying to find the money in their budget to make this happen?

Dijam Panifrahi: I say that's a great question. And that's something we think for overall ecosystem and for the AR/VR use case, a real big pickup, it has to move beyond. The big thing with the pandemic, what has happened is, now because of this whole situation that a Gen Z that has come to this. Now, the things that we have been trying to plan to (implement) it, or maybe the next couple of years, and all of a sudden, this all has to be framed within a few weeks or few months. Because they know that without using this medium, some of their businesses, they cannot continue to operate the way they really want to operate.

And we are seeing that. We are seeing that in terms of the interests that we are getting. We are seeing that in terms of even our application partners who are working there. They are getting those requests. The platform that we are providing here is designed toward that. How do you drive down the total cost of ownership, the cost with which even beyond those large players can actually leverage this medium? But the cloud-based approaches that we taking allows them to do that in a much more economical way and across a location, getting multiple users to work in that environment. So, we are solving a lot of that problem. So we are definitely seeing a lot of interest to pick up this medium for those businesses.

Elon Musk and the pyramids of the mind – Vanguard

By Owei Lakemfa

ELON Reeve Musk, 49, citizen of South Africa, Canada and the United States with a 2020 net worth of $70.6 billion is one of the richest persons in the world. In fact, he can literarily buy a country or two. He co-founded the electronic-payment firm PayPal which he sold, making a handsome $180 million, post-tax.

Musk is a leader in the race to universalise the electric car through Tesla in which he invested $70 million from his PayPal deal.

He also dreams to make space travel as easy as normal air travel. For this, he established a rocket company, SpaceX which designs, manufactures and launches rockets and spacecraft.

Its flagship spacecraft The Dragon which is capable of carrying seven passengers was due back on earth on Sunday, August 2 from a two-month trip to International Space Station carrying NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley.

So, by any standard, Musk is a successful man and should be contented. He must have been quite excited about the Dragons planned return which is just a step towards his bigger dream of landing humans in Mars.

There are those who believe that aliens occupy one or more planets and that they visit the earth in spacecraft and sometimes abduct humans. There was panic in America in 1938 when 23-year-old Orson Wells during a broadcast on radio production, proclaimed:

The Martians (Aliens from Mars) are coming. It fooled many Americans into believing aliens were invading the earth. There was widespread panic.

Believing in the existence of aliens, Musk on Friday, August 31, tweeted: Aliens built the pyramids obv (obviously). He was implying that the pyramids in Africa, some over 4,600 years old, could not have been built by humans. He was suggesting that Africans could not have had the knowledge, intelligence and skills to build such enduring architectural wonders.

To admit that Africans built the pyramids, would have meant the claim of superiority over the Blackman is just crap. That would be too much for a Musk born into Apartheid South Africa, raised in a Whites-only suburb of Pretoria and attending the Pretoria Boys High School, a Whites-only racist school.

His mother, Maye, a South African television personality was Canadian, while his father, Errol Musk was an Afrikaans engineer who during Apartheid, shot dead three persons and got away with it, claiming it was in self-defence.

In an interview in the November 2017 edition of the Rolling Stone Magazine, titled: Elon Musk: The Architect of Tomorrow he said of his father: He was such a terrible human being. You have no ideaMy dad will have a carefully thought-out plan of evil. He will plan evil.

He was such a terrible human being You have no idea about how bad. Almost every crime you can possibly think of, he has done. Almost every evil thing you could possibly think of, he has done.

The Senior Musk writing in defence of himself said: Ive been accused of being a Gay, a Misogynist, a Paedophile, a Traitor, a Rat, a Shit (quite often), a Bastard (by many women whose attentions I did not return) and much more.

My own (wonderful) mother told me I am ruthless and should learn to be more humane; (but) I love my children and would readily do whatever for them.

But Musk disagrees with his fathers claims. He said even after he assisted his father financially, things did not change: Ive tried everything. I tried threats, rewards, intellectual arguments, emotional arguments, everything to try to change my father for the better, and he no way, it just got worse.

Musk believes that a human beings personality might be 80 per cent nature and 20 per cent nurture. It is unclear what percentage of his fathers gene he has acquired. For example, he said:

Im naturally good at engineering, thats because I inherited it from my father. But as evident from his views of his father, he has tried to fight off the negative aspects of his fathers personality.

Musk suffers from autophobia or monophobia: fear of being lonely or alone even in a secured environment. This may be due to his childhood experience when he was left most of the time with an inattentive nanny. He also had a bad time in school: The gangs at school would hunt me down literally hunt me down!

Musks claims about aliens building the pyramids are conditioned not by his knowledge but his background that makes it difficult to accept the reality that Africa led the world in knowledge production, and is the foundation of modern civilisation.

There are verifiable archaeological findings on the lives of the pyramid builders, including their homes, family life, tools and tombs where they were buried. In some of the pyramids are paintings of the builders at work. The imaginary aliens Musk tweeted about cannot leave such human trail.

Musk must have been challenged by the marvel that the pyramids are such as the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt which stands at over 450ft (137m). For thousands of years, the over 100 pyramids in Egypt and 123 in Sudan, were the tallest structures in the world.

Going by Musks claim and since the pyramids were the tombs of the Black Pharaohs and their families, why would aliens come down periodically to build tombs for them?

Is it to suggest that the so-called aliens were servants of the African kings who obeyed summons to fly to earth and build the pyramids? Does that suggest that Africans were a super-race who controlled aliens? Do all these make sense even to the unintelligent?

The pyramids are an extraordinary human heritage which bear eloquent testimony to human knowledge and skill. So, to ascribe their construction to aliens is to do injury to human history.

Why would a Musk who said: I was raised by books. Books, and then my parents, not read up on the pyramids before tweeting on them? It is a wonder that Musk who reads and thinks about space would not educate himself about the earthly pyramids;

one of the seven wonders of the world that shows the vastness of human knowledge and how the ancients pushed science to the limits just as he is trying to do with space travel.

Musk has built monumental structures or pyramids in his mind, choosing variously to stand at the pyramidal top when he wants to view the world, or in-between the pyramids when he chooses to limit his vision.

Sometimes, the behaviour and utterances of Musk give the impression that you do not need to be intelligent to be a billionaire. That in some cases, like that of Donald Trump, means you actually require a load of stupidity to be a billionaire.

Keys to the Kingdom: The NCAA unveils its ambitious NIL rights proposal – Roll Bama Roll

Whether you frame the issue as a circular firing squad or prefer to imagine the NCAA, Congress, and student-athletes locked in a Mexican standoff, the NIL issue facing all three parties is a messy one.

Any solution amenable to the continued existence of college athletics is going to leave at least one party displeased. The more a solution veers towards status quo, the more likely the aggrieved parties will be student-athletes. On the other hand, a solution that is sweeping in its scope and favors student-athletes is going leave the NCAA with less teeth than it presently has (or uses) as it gums away at sports worst cheaters. This says nothing of endangering Title IX, competitive balance, shuttering many programs, and costing hundreds (if not thousands) of scholarships every year.

And Congress, of course, doesnt see much political hay to be made here in any event, (outside of bloviating for the kids) since the party with the most money at stake encompasses the powerbrokers. But the party that arrives to the table in far greater numbers, with the more equitable claim, and with overwhelmingly sympathetic press coverage, is the bloc representing the numerous players affected.

The intractable standoff and the tensions at play here have mainly led to hot takes from the press, meaningless denunciations from Senators, and stonewalling from the NCAA, as they come to Congress asking for the moon while offering up very little in terms of compromise or substantive change. Unfortunately, Congress is also the only entity capable of breaking this stalemate.

That is why it was very surprising yesterday to see the NCAA come to the Hart Building, hat-in-hand, and propose a student-friendly and exceptionally broad range of NIL rights for Congress consideration.

Ross Dellenger at Sports Illustrated has the full story here, but in a nutshell, the NCAAs four-page proposal does the following:

Notice whats not in there? No percentages, no monetary hard cap, no excruciating industry-by-industry restrictions on ventures.

So, say an Alabama running back can get a 4-year-old Dodge Charger with high miles if he appears in a hella cheesy local television ad. That sort of venture is not likely going to run afoul of continued amateurism or eligibility. But, LSU Bro signing a front-loaded $70 million dollar Nike endorsement deal, one that makes him a nine-digit-earner in college, is probably beyond any reasonable case to be made for continued amateur status.

In short, go forth and get paid...but dont be absurd about it. The market wont be stymied in advance, though it may be disallowed after the fact. And straight up Uncle Sugar bagman money is still prohibited.

To say that it is a bold approach is an understatement.

The NCAA isnt playing nearly the role as a market regulator (or market prohibitor) that it had previously suggested to Congress, nor has it painted itself into the all-or-nothing corner it has maintained for almost a century. Since there is an implied reasonableness threshold a very common and familiar objective criteria in the law it seems to be one that is easy to administer and encourages NIL rights to be spread across more sports, more players, and even across the Title IX sphere Sabrina Ionescu could have been making a nice living on the books the last four years at Oregon.

What does the NCAA want in return for a more hands-off, post hoc approach?

All that the NCAA is asking in return is everything.

No, seriously, everything:

The governing body of college athletics is asking for lawmakers to grant it antitrust protection, preemption from differing state NIL laws and to allow it to craft all rules on athlete compensation.

In exchange for letting players profit off of their image, name, likeness, performance, or even mere association with a winning program:

The NCAAs request is a big ask, to be sure. On paper, it looks like the NCAA is asking for everything. But, they do cite compelling reasons for Congress to play along practically drafting the legislative findings of fact that would accompany any bill it passed. They are familiar arguments too. Pay-for-play and unregulated NIL:

threatens gender equity in athletic programs, creates tax liability for athletes, creates an employer-employee relationship between schools and athletes, and invites corruption into college campuses. If differing state laws are allowed to remain, they would adversely impact the competitive balance that currently exists in college sports.

It is hard to argue with any of those conclusions either; they necessarily follow from an unregulated NIL landscape.

But perhaps two other reasons surface, and while not explicitly mentioned, accepting the NCAA deal has two political benefits for Congress.

When (and it is a matter of when), Star Player is sidelined for accepting that Bugatti Veyron, then constituents and the media and other tastemakers can be mad at the NCAA, not us. And, secondly, the NCAAs proposal doesnt require perpetual congressional oversight sign it, let the market sort it out, and let the whole mess be the NCAAs headache. And the latter is a powerful motivator, to be sure.

Yes, it seems to weigh in favor of the NCAA, but the proposal also does not create a bottleneck on the front end. It is expansive. It is exceptionally flexible. And it would end silly ineligibility cases weve seen the last decade where players lose games and seasons and bowl games over some tattoos, a plane ticket here and there, autograph money, or a couple of extra meals.

To go any further does create an employee-employer relationship; it does foster an even greater inequity across states and conferences and even within them; and it would all-but certainly spell the end of smaller programs, the loss educational opportunities and scholarships, and even the gutting of Title IX athletics.

While many may want the entire thing blown up, and to instead install some bastard love child of Ayn Rand and Adam Smith, that is simply never going to happen.

So, how will it play out?

As usual, we find that what passes for policy in this country may come down to two competing camps, with the golden rule settling the score.

The right favors less restrictions on players, of course. The thousands of D1 athletes far outnumber their counterparts on the administrative side of the equation. But, these college-aged Americans historically are also the most apathetic voters, the least attentive to the political process, and are the poorest age demographic hence, least likely to donate or vote. Meanwhile, the power brokers in the NCAAs camp and they are the governors and state legislators and big-time donors wield the clout and the cash that Senators most covet. Expediency then may steer Congress towards pleasing those who make campaign contributions and are powers in their own right.

Golden Rule: He who has the gold makes the rules.

That said, there is almost no way that Congress wont also make some demands regarding health and safety of players, concerns that the NCAA pooh-poohed away during their last hearing. But that is a story for another time.

For now, delight in the fact that the NCAAs proposal is likely to leave no one (except perhaps Congress) happy, and that may be the surest sign that is also a fair deal.

Las Vegas family reunited with lost cat after 10 years – UPI News

Aug. 7 (UPI) -- A cat brought into a Las Vegas shelter as a stray was reunited with his family 10 years after going missing from a friend's house.

Heather Whitener said Logan the cat fled from a friend's house a decade ago, and the family was shocked to receive a call this week from The Animal Foundation saying the feline had been found.

The Animal Foundation said Logan had been brought in as a stray and staff were able to get Whitener's contact information from his microchip.

"He's a very loving cat," Whitener told KSNV-TV. "As soon as I started scratching right here, his favorite spot, he's like, OK."

The Animal Foundation said microchipping pets dramatically increases the chances of a reunion when an animal goes missing.

"Thanks to a microchip, The Animal Foundation was able to reunite Logan the cat with his family after 10 years of being missing," the shelter said in a Facebook post.

Campfires banned on all state and U.S. lands in Nevada – Las Vegas Sun

Published Friday, Aug. 7, 2020 | 3 p.m.

Updated 1 hour, 15 minutes ago

RENO, Nev. (AP) State and federal officials are banning campfires and elevating other restrictions in Nevada and parts of eastern California due to severe wildfire risks and an unusually high number of human-caused blazes so far this year.

The U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and Nevada Division of Forestry announced the new restrictions effective at midnight Friday.

Open flame campfires are prohibited on all state and federal lands, including within developed campgrounds, day-use areas and dispersed-camp areas throughout the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest in Nevada and eastern California

Land managers report record-dry conditions in Nevada, where much of the state is in a severe drought. They say the monsoonal moisture typical this time of year hasn't materialized and experts expect the already critically dry fuels to continue to deteriorate throughout August.

Authorities say Nevada already has experienced more human-caused fires than the normal average for an entire year.

Other restrictions include a ban on smoking except within enclosed vehicles.

Fireworks, tracer rounds, explosive targets and all other incendiary devices also are banned.

The use of welding, acetylene torches or any explosive is prohibited without a permit.

Its also now illegal to operate or park a vehicle or motorized equipment over the top of dried vegetation.
