Yellow Springs Black Lives Matter Protests On Thirteenth Consecutive Week – WYSO

On Saturday, August 22 there was a Black Lives Matter rally and march in downtown Yellow Springs. The topic was Antiracism in Education. Arielle Johnson, one of the events organizers, said in a speech that white students are less likely to receive suspensions or expulsions when compared to their Black peers.

The number of students that receive suspensions and expulsions positively correlates with the amount of altercations with the criminal justice system." Johnson says, "These black students in turn are more likely to drop out of school and are increasingly at risk of being caught in the school to prison pipeline.

Multiple educators from Yellow Springs Schools also spoke briefly about how the district has and will continue to teach antiracism in the classroom.

This was the thirteenth consecutive week of Black Lives Matter protests in Yellow Springs, and they will continue: the topic this Saturday will be cultural appropriation. Attendees should meet at 11:00 am in front of Mills Lawn Elementary School in Yellow Springs.

Environmental reporter Chris Welter is a corps member with Report for America, a national service program that places journalists into local newsrooms.

Organizers expecting up to 250 participants in Aug. 29 Black Lives Matter march in Pendleton – East Oregonian

PENDLETON More than a hundred residents of Eastern Oregon and Southeast Washington are planning to march peacefully through the streets of Pendleton in a protest against police brutality and racial injustice on Saturday, Aug. 29.

The protest will occur more than three months after police officers killed George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, during an arrest for allegedly using a counterfeit bill in Minneapolis in May. The killing of Floyd sparked protests across the country that are ongoing and were escalated once again this week in response to police shooting Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old Black man, seven times in the back in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Aug. 23.

Following smaller protests in the area throughout the summer, organizers for the Aug. 29 protest wanted to coordinate a regional event to amplify their message and demonstrate the number of people in the region united behind these causes.

I feel like we havent really had an event for this social movement that has drawn a large enough crowd to show people that this is something we care about in our communities, said Briana Spencer, a Black, Puerto Rican woman whos also a member of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation and a lead organizer for the event.

Spencer has worked alongside Nolan Bylenga, a Black Pendleton resident running as a Democrat for Oregons House District 58, and John Landreth, a white Boardman resident who grew up in the area. With the help of other community members and regional organizations, theyve promoted the event on social media for over a month and are estimating attendance between 150 and 250 people from Umatilla County, Walla Walla and the Tri-Cities area in Washington.

The event is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Roy Raley Park on Southwest Court Avenue, and will include a march through the city and planned community speakers. Census and voter registration booths will also be at the event, along with some kid-friendly activities and more.

Organizers are encouraging all attendees to wear face coverings, abide by social distancing guidelines and be mindful of the risks of COVID-19 during the protest. For those that feel uncomfortable to attend in person or are physically unable to march with the group, a car march has been organized to take place concurrently with the walking march.

The scheduled speakers are a diverse group of Black, Indigenous, people of color from the region who are actively running for office and or organizing and will include: Carina Miller, Eugene Vi, Cia Cortinas Rood, Max Jean Maddern, Amber Rodriguez and Bylenga.

Organizers said they selected these speakers to provide a diversity of perspectives to share at a platform that arent regularly given within the region.

There may be people that have diversity in what theyd like to see policy-wise, but what brings us all together is that we can come to an agreement that racism needs to end and that we need to have justice in a system that claims to be a justice system, Bylenga said.

The event will, at least in part, decry police brutality and racially unjust enforcement by police, but organizers have also held weekly meetings with the Pendleton Police Department to make safety plans for the march.

You can still work with police in regards to safety of an event and still be against issues like police brutality and racial injustice, Spencer said.

But local police will also be monitoring a counter-protest expected to include armed participants and slated to occur simultaneously in opposition of the Black Lives Matter protest.

Weve got a plan in place so were not going to be in a situation where were going to be pushing crowds and standing between protest group A and protest group B, said Pendleton Police Chief Stuart Roberts. Were going to expect adults to act like adults, and those who choose not to obviously well have to make a decision about intervention.

In weeks leading up to the protest, HollyJo Beers, the leader of the Umatilla County Three Percenters and a candidate for Umatilla County commissioner, promoted attendance at the counter-protest through her Facebook page.

Organizers said they spoke with Beers in an attempt to dispel misunderstandings or rumors about the protest, though armed opposition is still expected on Aug. 29.

Beers didnt respond to requests for comment from the East Oregonian and her profile no longer appears on Facebook.

While acknowledging residents have legitimate reasons for their fear about Black Lives Matter protests, the organizers are also unclear why theyre being counter-protested when theyve worked directly with police to focus on safety and nonviolence.

People are so fear driven in our community that theyre willing to turn against their own community members in a small town like Pendleton and show up armed with AR-15s, Bylenga said.

Roberts said hes kept open communication with organizers on both sides of the protests and his department is focused on maintaining safety for all who attend on Aug. 29.

To a certain degree theres some animosity there, Roberts said of the two groups. But our role and our job is to keep everybody safe and allow them to come and exercise their constitutional rights. And thats exactly what were going to do.

As news of the protest has spread through the community, and rumors about its intentions and prospective participants along with it, Spencer said the protest has become about sending an additional message on Aug. 29.

The message that we really want to have out to the community is that they dont have to be afraid that this is coming to their town, Spencer said. That our focus has always been to be peaceful, and its being organized by local people. None of us want to see our communities be torn down.

LONDON, United Kingdom For designer Stella Jean, enough is enough. Its time to turn the page and demand fashion reform, she said. Last month, alongside Milan-based designer Edward Buchanan, Jean issued letters to Carlo Capasa, president of the Camera della Moda, and to the organisation's 14 executive members in what Jean described as an historical appeal to bring to the forefront for the first time in our history, the paradoxical taboo topic of racism in Italy and also to support Black designers who are still invisible in the business of Italian fashion.

In the latest episode of The BoF Podcast, Jean sat down with BoF Founder and Editor-in-Chief Imran Amed to share her personal history growing up the daughter of a Haitian mother and Italian father, discuss the systemic racism within Italys fashion sector and focus on fostering change.

Elected officials join Black Lives Matter protest on third night since shooting of Jacob Blake – UW Badger Herald

Over one hundred protesters marched through downtown Madison Tuesday night, joined by local elected officials, to demand institutional change to combat racism.

The Madison youth-led group Impact Demand led the protest, which started at the Capitol, looped around to University Avenue, marched down Langdon and stopped at Memorial Library.

At Memorial Library, the gathered group heard from Michael Johnson, the President of the Dane County Boys and Girls Club.

Protesters march down State Street to protest police brutality, white supremacy at UWTuesday, around 100 protesters gathered at the Capitol and marched down State Street to demand the City of Madison and Read

Johnson said he plans to donate $5,000 to Impact Demands efforts, with $10,000 coming later, and he spoke about the need to hold elected officials and community leaders accountable for their actions, the motivation behind him inviting a group of local officials to the protest.

The group included Carlton Jenkins, new superintendent of the Madison Metro School District, State Superintendent Carolyn Taylor, MMSD School Board President Gloria Reyes, Madison Common Council President Sheri Carter, Rep. Sheila Stubbs, United Way President Renee Moe and more.

Jenkins, originally from Minnesota, talked about how when the Minneapolis Police Department killed George Floyd back in May, he was only a few minutes away. He said hes been impressed with how the young people of Madison have mobilized to fight against racism.

People in my generation, we havent seen it like this. You guys are bringing it, Jenkins said. It is time for the oppression and institutional racism to come down.

Reyes said as a former police officer, she understands the importance of acting for change. But her speech got backlash from the crowd some yelled, f**k 12 and abolish the police and others asked her why it took so long for her to take police officers out of schools.

Reyes said the changes she and others have enacted, like how over a month ago she voted to get police out of Madison Metro schools, came because of activists and community members expressing their demands.

I took cops out of our schools, so when you peacefully protest and you demand, it works, Reyes said. We need to do better. Hold your elected officials accountable.

Several protesters came down from Milwaukee to protest in Madison tonight. One, named Sedan Smith, works with a Milwaukee organization called Breaking Barriers. In 2016, a Milwaukee Police Officer named Dominique Heaggan-Brown killed Smiths brother, Sylville Smith.

Madison-based youth organization pushes for legislative changeImpact Demand is a newly-formed organization led by Madison youth with three primary demands community control of police, outlawing Read

Heaggan-Brown was found not guilty of first-degree homicide, though he later went to jail for assaulting a male prostitute.

My brothers life will not be in vain because I chose to keep his name alive, Smith said. Were not gonna ask for justice anymore were gonna march for change.

The protest later marched back up State St. to the Capitol, then to the Dane County Courthouse, where Jordan King, a local activist arrested at Monday nights protest, was held. Some protesters threw rocks at the courthouse and broke a window, then they marched back down State St., and turned to go down University.

On University, a small splinter group lit two dumpsters on fire at the University-Bassett St. intersection and another few individuals broke the Papa Johns window, after which the protest started to break up. Organizers told those still in attendance to go home to stay safe from the police.

Madison police then showed up, some on horseback, and confronted the remaining few protesters.

Flight attendant suspects his ties to Black Lives Matter led to vandalism of his SUV at DIA – FOX 31 Denver

DENVER (KDVR) Denver-based flight attendant Cameron Rogers says he believes a vandal targeted his vehicle because of Black Lives Matter stickers on his SUVs rear window. Rogersreported the crime to Denver police on Wednesday.

Rogers, who works for United Airlines, parked his car at Denver International Airports employee parking lotonMonday evening. He returned on Wednesday to discover his vehicle had been keyed. Some of the most intense vandalism is directly under his Black Lives Matter stickers.

When I walked around, I saw they had done it completely along the drivers side as well, Rogers said.It was clearly due to the Black Lives Matter sticker.

Rogers has been active in the BLM movement by attending several protests.

My dad is Black, he said. My mom is white. To me, this is a very important issue.

Its an issue he supports as a way to bring people together not to create deeper division.

I feel like people look at this sticker or see our posts and they think that Black Lives Matter is a threat, Rogers said. The biggest thing that I can say is thats not what it is at all. If anything, were trying to bring unity.

Rogers bought the SUV last year. The insurance deductible is $500.Thats money out of his out of his pocket as he faces an airline furlough starting in October.

The vehicle was parked in a lot that only employees are able to access. DIA says the parking lot is under video surveillance.

The airport confirms it will work with police to provide necessary footage.

McCarthy addresses COVID-19 and Black Lives Matter in live Q&A – The Bakersfield Californian

Though worried about the lingering effects of COVID-19 on businesses and the U.S. educational system, Rep. Kevin McCarthy projected optimism that the country would be "over the top of" the pandemic by the time Congress convenes in January.

Answering a wide variety of questions during an online meeting with the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California, the Bakersfield Republican said he expects there will be at least one and maybe three COVID-19 vaccines as well as therapeutic treatments available to treat the virus.

He told PPIC President Mark Baldassare the economy should not fully reopen until it can be done safely but quickly added that with regard to procedures for doing so, "I don't believe that with the size of California that one size fits all."

"I think we want to follow our science, we want to trust our people," he said, adding shortly after that "as we open up we're going to have to accept that there are going to be some people that contract COVID."

The roughly 50-minute interview, broadcast live on the internet, also touched on the congressman's views on the Black Lives Matter movement, national politics and foreign interference with Nov. 3's General Election.

He said George Floyd, the Minneapolis man whose death in police custody earlier this year sparked civil unrest across the country, should not have had his life taken. McCarthy said he's since come to realize many other instances of injustice have taken place when video cameras were not rolling.

McCarthy said Sen. Tim Scott, a Black man representing the state of South Carolina, has become among his best friends. He said Scott told him about a time he was in the U.S. Capitol and police there stopped him and asked who he had taken his identity pin from.

"We really had a wake-up call" on race relations, McCarthy said. "We can improve drastically."

McCarthy, the House minority leader, went on to blame Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi for delays in passing a new economic stimulus measure.

"To be frank, I'm disappointed," he said. Negotiations on financial help for Americans should have been concluded by now, he said.

"I'm not being partisan but I think a lot of this falls on the speaker. Because she's holding up based on something that even Democrats do not want to hold it up."

Pelosi has said publicly she is holding out for agreement on a wider set of recovery measures. She has asserted that if there is a deal on the narrow aid package Republicans are pushing for that they will not return to the bargaining table to provide more lasting assistance.

It is clear that the administration still does not grasp the magnitude of the problems that American families are facing, Pelosi and Sen. Chuck Schumer, the minority leader, said in a joint statement Aug. 12. We have again made clear to the administration that we are willing to resume negotiations once they start to take this process seriously.

McCarthy, asked about any concerns he had about election interference by foreign countries, said the FBI has stated such efforts have been made by three countries. The congressman named just one of them Thursday: China, which he said has made clear it supports Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, the former vice president.

"The one I'm most concerned about is China," he said. That country has the world's second-largest economy and has shown it is willing to wield its wealth and influence, he added.

Black Lives Matter in Northern Ireland – The Economist

The provinces own brand of ethnic politics leaves no room for other sorts

Aug 22nd 2020

THE SERIOUS CRIME ACT is mostly used against big-time gangsters, but on July 30th Tura Arutura, a musician who has choreographed some exuberant peace events, was interviewed at a police station on the ground that he might have broken that law. He was told he was suspected of abetting an offence by addressing a Black Lives Matter protest in Belfast on June 6th.

In theory, the Zimbabwe-born artist could be prosecuted. But he and dozens of others who received fines or summonses because of the BLM rallies are seeking a judicial review of police behaviour, arguing that officers misinterpreted the law and acted too harshly. The police say they will ponder any lessons from the review.

Northern Irelands government had told people, on public-health grounds, not to demonstrate and changed the law to curb the event. Those who went retort that the rallies were orderly and distanced. They point to a promise from Boris Johnson that people could join global protests against racismand to differences in the policing of different communities.

There have been several other hygienically risky gatherings in Northern Ireland this summer, including the huge funeral of an IRA commander and bonfires at which Protestant and Catholic hotheads vented their spleen. At blazes in Derry in mid-August, images of the queen, wreaths commemorating the British war dead and Union flags were incinerated. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) did little to restrain those events.

Northern Irelands citizens are not in much doubt why the police are selectively lenient. The PSNI answers to a board dominated by Sinn Fein, the Catholic nationalist party, and the pro-British, Protestant Democratic Unionists. That makes the police cautious about confronting either of the main communities, but they seem to act more independently when dealing with smaller segments of society.

The binary division in Northern Irish society is the likely explanation for one of the regions many political peculiarities: the absence of ethnic-minority representation in its institutions. Black and ethnic-minority citizens form at least 2.2% of the population and possibly twice that, yet no member of an ethnic minority sits in the regions 90-member assembly. Anna Lo, a Hong Kong-born centrist, retired in 2016, complaining of racism. Municipal councils are similarly all-white. If elected bodies reflected the population, at least a couple of assembly members would be from visible minorities, as would a dozen councillors. That is in contrast with the Irish republic, where an ethnic Chinese woman has just become mayor of Dublin, and the deputy head of government is half-Indian.

Apart from Mr Arutura, many other minority figures make an outsized contribution to Northern Ireland, while steering clear of a political world in which they would feel awkward. Mukesh Sharma, an ethnic Indian who built up a thriving travel business, sponsors big cultural events and plays his homelands music. He is a deputy lieutenant of Belfast, a ceremonial but prestigious role.

Angila Chada, another Belfast Indian, has co-founded an NGO called Springboard which helps disadvantaged people of all backgrounds to find work. But running for office has little attraction: Going into politics would mean deals and compromises which I am unwilling to make, she explains. One of her north Belfast neighbours, 25-year-old John McGrath, a budding solicitor of Kenyan origin, advises asylum-seekers and is a school governor. He sees little incentive to take the risks that choosing a political side in the citys ancient feud would carry. I can just imagine my black face being burned in a bonfire, he says, only half in jest.

UC Berkeley move in was anything but normal this year – Berkeleyside

Four Oaklanders check into their rooms at UC Berkeley on Aug. 21. Left to right: Jacob Williams, 20, a neurobiology major and Tijaan Henderson, 19, studying bioengineering, both chose to stay close to Cal for lab access; Shaka Tellem, 19, studying political economics is an Associate Students of University of California senator; and Mohammed Mustafa, 19, a computer science student is looking for lab access. Photo: Pete Rosos

For some students, the desire for a typical college experience drew them to Berkeley this weekend, despite the fact that all their classes will be online, theyll only be able to socialize with 10-12 neighbors and student organizations are banned from meeting in person.

Others arriving for Cal move-in which this year was spread over four days, one of many health and safety measures forced on the process by COVID-19 feared experiencing a blow to their education. Still others simply wanted to escape the distractions of living at home.

Around 2,000 students trickled into UC Berkeleys dormitories between Thursday and Sunday, ahead of the start of fall semester. (The university is only allowing 3,200 of enrolled students to stay in on-campus housing.)

Move-in happened in hourly time slots to keep crowds to a minimum. Each student had two appointments: one for a COVID-19 test at the schools testing site, and one for an hour-long window to move all of their belongings into their room. Afterwards, the students begin a mandated 7- to 10-day self-sequester, when they may only leave their rooms to pick up meals from dining services and return to their rooms to eat.

Maya Zhus decision to return to campus was complicated, the 18-year-old sophomore said as she waited for her time slot to move in her belongings.

I dont think theres much I need here for learning, she said, but she hopes being on campus will help her concentrate on her virtual classes. Finishing her classes remotely at home felt like an extended summer, she explained.

I need to step it up a little bit, Zhu admitted.

For Alex Ocampo, 18, of San Francisco, a room to herself will be a welcome relief: Ive always wanted to be independent, she said.

Ocampo has been at home since her high school went online. She had no private place to study and was often subject to distractions from family members. Being in Berkeley, in a private dorm room, will let her focus on her first year of college, she said.

For Cameron Johnson, 19, living at school will help her feel like shes still getting part of the normal college experience, she said. Her decision to move to Berkeley from Manhattan Beach, California, pitted the risk of COVID-19 against social isolation.

Incoming student Cameron Johnson wants to feel like shes still getting part of the normal college experience.

I had to weigh the fact that most of my friends were leaving, Johnson said.

Johnsons mother, Elise Johnson, had accompanied her daughter to Berkeley to help her move in. Its a privilege to be able to be in a dorm, she said. Im grateful for [Cameron] to have this typical experience in this non-typical world were in.

Nearly all of the students arriving in Berkeley have had some experience with online learning since the pandemic began. Johnson and Alad Peretz, 18, were both underwhelmed by their high schools virtual classrooms.

They had to scramble to get all the classes online, Johnson said, and the results were not the best. Shes hoping for a more rigorous experience at UC Berkeley, she added.

Peretzs online classes in Miami, Florida were also difficult to manage, but hes hoping the few months the university had to prepare will make a difference.

Peretz road-tripped to California from Miami in an RV with his parents and sister to move into his room, a triple that he has to himself. Hes excited to make social connections with his pod and hopes the close quarters will foster deep connections.

I was ready to head out, strike out on my own, he said. I think itll be nice.

Grace Garcia, 18, felt stressed and excited as she arrived on campus from Los Angeles. Without a roommate, shell have to face her first weeks of college with more self-sufficiency than shed anticipated, she said.

I feel like I have to grow up a little quicker, she said. Im just glad I get to come.

Garcia flew to Berkeley on a half-empty airplane with her brother, Robert Garcia, 19, a Cal sophomore who returned because he finds it easier to focus on his studies outside the family home. Hes also hoping his economics classes can return to something resembling normal within a few months.

We just want the virus to end as soon as possible to go to in-person classes next semester, he said.

As Grace Garcia moved into her dorm, Robert Garcia prepared to settle into an off-campus apartment with two friends. Hes glad to be at the same school as his little sister so he can look out for her, he said.

I know my parents are happy, he added.

At noon on Aug. 20, foot traffic was low and traffic was calm as Heidi Scribner, the universitys executive director of housing, events and facilities, and Jo Mackness, assistant vice chancellor and chief operating officer of student affairs, observed the street from outside the Unit 1 dormitory on Channing Way.

Its a very happy and sad day today, given COVID times. Jo Mackness, UC Berkeley

The day was very slow and steady, which is exactly what we want it to be, said Mackness. We really engineered the number of people that could be here each hour.

Echoing the students moving in, Mackness said she sees the complexities of the decision to live on-campus.

Its a very happy and sad day today, given COVID times, she said. Its a sad thing that students dont get to experience the full college move-in day, but shes happy that the university can provide housing for whom theres no better option.

As for Scribner, who has overseen many move-ins over her 20-year career, she said this is the strangest.. Its Groundhog Day: Were going to do it four times.

As Zhu prepared for her self-sequester, she found herself a little unclear about the schools safety plan. Still, the risks to her education and future outweighed the risk of COVID-19, she said, and she intends to take responsibility for her own health.

Its on me, Zhu said. Nobody else can make sure Im safe.

National Science Foundation awards $20M to launch artificial-intelligence institute – Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences

Together, [Harvard and MIT] will build a bridge between subfields and between institutions and tackle some of the most challenging problems at the intersection of physics and AI, he said.

The eight senior researchers from Harvard include scientists affiliated with the FAS Division of Science, the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian, and the John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). Along with Dvorkin, they areDemba Ba, associate professor of electrical engineering and bioengineering at SEAS;Edo Berger, professor of astronomy;Daniel Eisenstein, professor of astronomy;Douglas Finkbeiner, professor of astronomy and physics;Yaron Singer, Gordon McKay Professor of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics at SEAS;Matthew Schwartz, professor of physics; andTodd Zickler, the William and Ami Kuan Danoff Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at SEAS.

The Harvard team brings expertise in particle physics, astrophysics, cosmology, computer vision, signal processing, and AI optimization.

Machine learning and artificial intelligence methods are providing scientists with powerful new tools and approaches, said FAS Dean of ScienceChristopher W. Stubbs. Its wonderful to see this regional collaboration receive support from the National Science Foundation to apply this new methodology to some of the most pressing open questions in the physical sciences.

Berger, one of the projects senior researchers, pointed out how the collaboration will break down the silos between different fields, even those that on the surface appear closely related, like astronomy and physics.

Thats one of the most important design features about this institute: the chance to not only enhance the work that my group is doing but learn more about whats happening in other areas that I dont think about on a daily basis, but where Im sure that we have common approaches and can benefit by talking to each other, Berger said.

Berger studies short-lived bursts of energy that appear in the sky and disappear on hard-to-predict timescales. The use of AI and machine learning has become central to processing and categorizing the vast data his group collects.

Other calculations that will be explored include computations in string theory, physical mathematics, and astroparticle physics and cosmology.

The institute will also focus on making an impact on existing physics experiments. For example, it looks to use AI to enhance the potential of the Large Hadron Collider, the worlds largest and most powerful particle accelerator, and the Laser Interferometer Gravity Wave Observatory (known as LIGO), the worlds largest gravitational wave observatory.

When it comes to AI itself, the major focus will be on applying physics-inspired principles, such as those explaining how light interacts with an object or how gravitational waves work, to develop a foundational understanding of artificial neural networks and accelerate progress toward better AI systems.

The field has treated neural networks as a black box, said Ba, who studies machine-learning algorithms built on deep neural networks and is the projects AI research coordinator. I see an opportunity to look inside the black box and begin to understand it.

The new institute is one of seven AI-focused institutes the NSF announced in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agricultures National Institute of Food and Agriculture, the Department of Homeland Securitys Science and Technology Directorate, and the Department of Transportations Federal Highway Administration. After a national competition, the Boston-area proposal was chosen in part because of the areas large concentration of top experts in both AI and fundamental physics.

NSFs long history of investment in AI research and workforce development paved the way for many of the breakthrough commercial technologies permeating and driving society today, said NSF Director Sethuraman Panchanathan in a statement. NSF invests more than $500 million in AI research annually. We are supporting five NSF AI institutes this year [two are supported by the USDA], with more to follow, creating hubs for academia, industry, and government to collaborate on profound discoveries and develop new capabilities to advance American competitiveness for decades to come.

Another major goal of the new institute focuses on education and workforce development. Along with the program for postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, that could include efforts such as a new interdisciplinary Ph.D. degree in physics, statistics, and data sciences; workshops offered by institute members; and various community outreach programs.

One critical charge of [its] mission is to demonstrate to the public, and to the most technologically gifted graduates and researchers, the revolutionary potential of AI for fundamental science, said Schwartz, who will head the new institutes coordination board.

Fueling AI to Grow the Economy Is Goal of 5 New NSF AI Institutes – EnterpriseAI

AI research by the National Science Foundation will expand to a broader range of businesses across the U.S. economy through five new NSF AI institutes being created at a cost of $100 million.

The new initiatives, which were unveiled Aug. 26 by the agency, will deepen the NSFs artificial intelligence research to expand the nations workforce and drive new possibilities for a wide range of businesses, educational institutions, medicine, banking and other organizations.

In a related announcement, two complementary AI research institutes are also being created by the U.S. Department of Agriculture over the next five years using $40 million in funding to expand AI research in farming and food processing.

The new AI institutes will emphasize use-inspired research to help businesses and organizations, said James Donlon, program director for information and intelligent systems in the NSFs directorate for computer and information science and engineering (CISE) division.

Were trying to tackle some of the grand challenges that we see in these different sectors of the economy to advance AI and a wide range of industries, said Donlon. It is what we hope to fuel, to understand AI more and to make a big impact.

The new institutes are organizing and creating implementation teams immediately, he said. They are champing at the bit to get going and onto their research.

The institutes will start their work as early as September through November.

One of the things Im really pleased to see, true to the goals of the program, is that each one of the institutes includes not only the promise to advance AI but also bold advances to help create this future AI workforce that well need to be competitive, said Donlon.

The efforts will create new collaborations and a network of AI research to expand these efforts, he added.

The new NSF AI institutes are:

Led by NSF, the AI initiatives are being conducted in partnership with the U.S.D.A.s National Institute of Food and Agriculture, the U.S. Department of Homeland's Security Science and Technology Directorate, and the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration, according to the NSF. The institutes will serve as nodes in a broader nationwide network that will pursue transformational advances in sectors of societal impact, from extreme weather preparedness to K-12 education.

The new U.S.D.A. AI institutes are:

Erwin Gianchandani, deputy assistant director for the NSFs directorate for computer and information science and engineering (CISE) division, said the newly-funded institutes have their roots in NSF-funded research going back many decades.

Were trying to unleash the potential and bringing together data and advanced computing capabilities, said Gianchandani.

A wide range of other organizations will also be involved in the AI research initiatives, including minority colleges and universities, companies, states and others, he said. The first programs will involve research in about 20 U.S. states.

This is really about a coalition of the willing coming together in a meaningful way, said Gianchandani. It is a first installment, a first round of institutes we are funding now.

Another funding round could come a year from now to further expand the program across the nation, he said.

Flying high: Panthers’ big shot at Immortality – Queensland Times

Penrith's seemingly unstoppable season is poised to have it in Immortal company.

In 1959, a St George Dragons side boasting three future Immortals in Johnny Raper, Norm Provan and Reg Gasnier, went through the season undefeated, with one draw the only blight on an 18-game season.

The Panthers currently sit atop the NRL table with 13 wins, a draw and just one loss.

And with games against Wests Tigers (home), Brisbane (away), Parramatta (home), North Queensland and Canterbury (both away), Penrith is $2.60 with the TAB to win its remaining matches and earn a place in the record books just behind the Dragons.

It will be some feat, given that would make them the first side since the Dragons 61 years to enter the finals with fewer than two losses. And that 1959 outfit was arguably the best of the Red V's 11 consecutive premiership sides as they completed the last unbeaten season in first grade history.

Kayo is your ticket to the 2020 NRL Telstra Premiership. Every game of every round Live & On-Demand with no-ad breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your 14-day free trial & start streaming instantly >

Penrith are chasing the likes of the 1959 Dragons.

Unheralded at the start of the year, Penrith has stormed into outright premiership favouritism for the first time since 2004.

"It's hard sometimes, you get ahead of yourself," Panthers backrower Liam Martin said. "But a lot of the coaching staff bring us back to earth, we might play well but there's always things to improve on.

"There's still improvement in us. We're building on something, and aiming for something bigger, so we're trying to not get complacent."

Even if the Panthers drop a game between now and then, they'll join some historically dominant regular season teams.

The 1975 Roosters, led by another Immortal in Arthur Beetson, and the 1995 Manly and Canberra outfits are the only teams to go through a regular season with two losses since grand finals became mandatory in 1955.

Given the upheaval the coronavirus pandemic has inflicted on the season it's a remarkable feat of consistency by the Panthers.

If they can finish it off, they'll join the above five teams as the only sides of the grand final era to win 90 per cent or more of their regular season games.

"All the boys drive it, there's a lot of boys with a lot of experience," Martin said. "They lead the way, telling us they've seen this same thing happen and to stay hungry.

Could the Panthers match the feats of Arthur Beetsons legendary Roosters sides?

"Blokes like Jimmy Tamou, he's won a premiership and he's been around for many years.

"He's a great role model for us young boys, we've just got to keep building on what we've built so far and it doesn't matter what you've done the week before, you just have to put it behind you and go out and play your best footy."

Of course, the Panthers would happily lose their shot at history if it helped them towards a premiership, and their regular-season domination is no guarantee of glory on grand final day.

Beetson's team of 1975 stormed to a then-record 38-0 grand final smashing of the Dragons, but only after losing the major-semi final 8-5 to the same club two weeks before.

Those Raiders and Manly teams of 1995 who flew into the finals with a similarly historic dominance?

Neither of them won it all - the Raiders didn't even make the decider, while Manly lost the big one to a Canterbury team who clawed their way up from sixth.

The last team to only lose one match in the regular season, the 1954 Newtown Jets, couldn't do it either and lost the grand final to South Sydney.

It's only natural for the young Panthers to start dreaming big given what they've achieved this year, but Martin said the team will refuse to rest on their laurels.

"It's hard sometimes, you get ahead of yourself," Martin said.

Martin has enjoyed a tremendous season on the right edge. Picture by Phil Hillyard.

"But a lot of the coaching staff bring us back to earth, we might play well but there's always things to improve on.

"You don't brush it aside just because you got the win. There's still improvement in us.

"We're building on something, and aiming for something bigger, so we're trying to not get complacent."

Five more wins would take Penrith's current streak to 16, equalling the third-longest run of victories in first grade history.

If they don't lose a match between now and the end of the season, including the grand final, they'll match the all time record of 19 - which is also held by the 1975 Roosters.

Suffocating early defence has been the key to the club's rise - they've gone 14 games in a row without conceding a point in the first 20 minutes.

"It's the mentality we've had all pre-season, and all season," Martin said.

"To use a boxing analogy - throw the first punch, start fast, go out hard and set the platform early and build off that. I think we've been doing that well, and now the piece of the puzzle is to get it right at the end of halves."

A Year of Free Comics: Immortality isnt all that it seems in LIVE FOREVER – Comics Beat

In Live Forever Sarahs world gets knocked off its axis when her mother suddenly dies of cancer, and as the young girl struggles with the loss, the temptation of finding a way to never lose someone again becomes too strong. When she discovers a formula that will lead to eternal life, she doesnt realize at first the dangerous problem shes triggering.

Written and illustrated by Raul Trevino, the story brings to life what anyone who has lost someone they care about struggles with. Why did that person have to die? Whether they were too young or their illness or accident too devastating, or even if they had lived a full life and you were just not ready to let them go, death is a hard pill to swallow. It is not uncommon to wish for immortality, at least for those closest to you, but as Sarahs mysterious neighbor Samuel explains, if every fish kept on living in the sea, thered be no room for new little ones.

The black and white art features splashes of red here and there to accent specific elements, mainly blood, which, as the story unfolds, is a key part of a formula that challenges death. For Sarah, is her grief so intense that she is tempted to mess with the natural order of things? She soon learns that while her grief can be quelled and shell keep those she cares for, the results of this action will lead to a much larger crisis.

Live Forever functions on a few levels, which is why it is such an appealing story. It taps into the pain and emotions we all face when someone dies. It is also a fantastic thriller/horror tale filled with mysterious characters and details that slowly reveal themselves as the story progresses.

Those were the days – The immortal Jimmy Delaney – HeraldScotland

THE fall-out over the controversial signing by Rangers of the former Celtic striker, Maurice Johnston, in July 1989, prompted Jack Webster, the Glasgow Herald columnist, to go back in time in search of a football legend.

From all that publicity about the man now reviled by followers of Celtic my thoughts were turning to the other end of that scale to a man who gained immortality as one of the greatest footballers of all time, hailed from every side for being the kind of man he was, Webster wrote.

I was thinking of Jimmy Delaney, a gladiator of the soccer arena for more than 20 years and darling of the Celtic Park supporters in particular. What a contrast, I thought, between the pampered prima donnas of today, earning millions without being able to lace the boots of the dashing Delaney, who reached the peak of his income in the 1950s with a weekly wage of 14!

Delaney played for Celtic for 12 years and moved on to Manchester United and, later, Aberdeen, Falkirk, and Derry City. He was capped 15 times for Scotland. Once when he played at Celtic Park with Aberdeen, the Celtic fans rose to acclaim him. He won the Scottish Cup with Celtic, the FA Cup with Manchester United, and an Irish Cup medal with Derry City.

In 1939 he broke his arm so badly that he was out of the game for more than two years.

For his article Webster spoke to Delaney at his home in a quiet little street in Cleland. Alas, the heroic figure was confined to bed, the man who fought bravely in many a soccer skirmish now fighting the bravest battle of all. Said Delaney: I had a great life in football. I loved the game so much that Saturdays couldnt come round soon enough.

Jimmy Delaney passed away a couple of months after the interview.

Sleeps With Monsters: Into the Woods With Emily Tesh and Carrie Vaughn – tor.com

The theme this week is, it seems, woodland, history, and its secrets.

Last June saw the publication of Emily Teshs Silver in the Wood. I missed it until now, with the publication of its loose sequel, Drowned Country, and Im not sure whether to be sorry I missed such a gem last year, or glad that I had the opportunity to read two gems back to back.

Silver in the Wood sets itself in the forest called Greenhollow. Its protagonist is Tobias Finch, a quiet, pragmatic sort of man. Bound to the wood, he does not dwell on the past, but tends with a profoundly practical insistence to such forest problems as arise: fairies, ghouls, murderously angry dryads. His only companions are his cat and Greenhollows non-murderous dryads, for to the world beyond the wood, hes a figure out of folklore, Greenhollows wild man.

But when the handsome new owner of Greenhollow Hall, youthful folklorist Henry Silver, arrives in Tobiass wood with endless curiosity and no notion that some secrets may be dangerous instead of wondrous, things change. Because Tobias, to his surprise, finds himself attached to Silver. And Silver is exactly the kind of man, come the spring equinox, to be the prey of the woods wicked, hungry Lord of Summer, who was once a manbut is a man no longerthat Tobias knew very well indeed.

Tesh has a deft ability to combine the numinous and the grounded: wildwood magic and the need to darn socks sit side by side. The arrival of the practical folklorist Adela Silver, Henry Silvers mother, into the narrative gives Teshs world, and the characters of Tobias and Finch, additional dimensions, making already compelling people more complicated and interesting. The novella as a whole is gorgeously written, well-paced, and thematically interested in regeneration and regrowth as opposed to the stagnant, parasitic immortality of the Lord of Summer.

Drowned Country, its sequel, is part katabasis, part reconciliation, and part study in temptation, selfishness, the crushing weight of isolation and loneliness and hunger

Perhaps hunger isnt the right word, but it has the right weight.

Henry Silver has taken Tobiass place. Bound to the woodbound to where the wood once was, as well as where it isand facing a kind of immortality, he is not dealing well with the new state of affairs. Especially since his own choices lost him Tobiass regard. When his mother asks, however reluctantly, for his help, he steps out from the confines of Greenhollow to the damp, grimy seaside town of Rothport with its looming abbey and long-drowned forest: there to find a missing girl, a dead vampire, and a road to Fairyland in the drowned echoes of the long-lost wood.

And Tobias Finch, whom Henry loves, and who Henry believes despises him.

For such a slender volume, it carries a great deal of freight. Teshs combination of practicality and feyness is just as well-paired here, especially with Henrya man with less talent for the practical than Tobias, and more inclination to be fey. Or to wallow in self-pity. Tesh mingles, too, humour and pathos, and a striking sense of narrative inevitability: the emotional and thematic climaxes have a very satisfying heft to them.

Well-recommended, these novellas.

The only fantastic element to Carrie Vaughns The Ghosts of Sherwood and The Heirs of Locksley is Robin Hood and all that ballad tradition mythos. But fantastically unlikely ahistoric historical personalities are a fine tradition in SFF and its adjacent works, and Vaughn gives us a version of Robinfor all that her novellas focus on his childrenthat feels grounded to a specific time and plausible in its outlines. The Ghosts of Sherwood sets itself immediately after the signing of the Magna Carta at Runnymede in 1215; The Heirs of Locksley, around the second coronation of the then thirteen-year-old Henry III at Westminster, four years after his first coronation at Gloucester. (Henry went on to have a relatively long life and reign.)

The language of these novellas reminds me of Vaughns striking, at times haunting, post-apocalyptic novels Bannerless and The Wild Dead (I dare not hope therell be other stories set in that world, because damn those are good): spare, plain, and perfectly sharpened to a point. Concerned with personal relationships, Vaughns pair of novellas are also interested in growth towards adulthood, and with living in the shadow of a story, or set of stories, that is larger than life: Mary, John, and Eleanor, the children of Robin of Locksley and his lady Marian, have to navigate a world thats different from their parents youth, but one where the story of their parents lives, and the myths of Sherwood, and (some of) the antagonisms of the past, remain live concerns for them.

I enjoyed these novellas immensely. And not just because Ive been brushing up on my medieval English history.

Star Wars Explains Why Palpatine Could Only Be Resurrected on Exegol – Screen Rant

Palpatine's resurrection in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker sits uncomfortably with Star Wars lore - but a recent book fixes the problem.

Star Wars has finally explained why Palpatine could only be resurrected on the Sith redoubt of Exegol.Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker left a whole host of unanswered questions, and some of them were frankly bizarre. The film itself, for example, never actually explained how Emperor Palpatine came back in the first place. Lucasfilm left it to Rae Carson's novelization to confirm the Emperor transferred his spirit into a clone body. He used an ancient Sith technique known as Essence Transfer, one he had learned from his own Master, Darth Plagueis.

And yet, there's still something very strange about Palpatine's use of Essence Transfer. This ability has been seen before, but previously there has been very strict limits to it; a Sith Lord has been able to survive death by binding their spirit to a nearby object, or possessing a nearby person. In the Emperor's case, he was in a completely different part of the galaxy to Exegol, so there shouldn't really have been any way for his spirit to jump to a clone body so far away.Meanwhile, it also seems odd that Palpatine would have clones made on a planet rich in the dark side, because that has a deteriorating effect on clones.

Related:How Emperor Palpatine Returned In Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

George Mann's recently-publishedStar Wars: Dark Legends finally provides a subtle answer to this mystery. This book is a collection of in-universe myths, but Lucasfilm has stressed they all contain a seed of truth. One story, "A Life Immortal," tells a tale of an ancient Sith Lord whose quest for immortality drew her to Exegol. According to this story, Exegol is a unique vergence in the Force, where "the veil between life and death [is] thin." That would explain why any Sith who sought immortality would inevitably find their way to Exegol - including Palpatine.

The brief comments fits perfectly with Chuck Wendig's novelAftermath: Empire's End, which suggested Palpatine's quest for immortality led him to sense some disturbance in the Force out in the Unknown regions, "some origin of the Force, some dark presence formed out of malevolent substance." The Emperor believed this was a signal, one he was attuned to by virtue of his power. He was presumably sensing Exegol, the one place in the galaxy where his ruthless ambition to conquer death could truly be realized. Palpatine's Sith Eternal cultists could perform a ritual on Exegol to tear open that veil, allowing the Emperor's spirit to break through and possess the prepared clone body.

But if the veil between life and death is unusually thin on Exegol, then it would work for the light side of the Force as well as the dark. That would explain why the Jedi of old were able to communicate with Rey during the climactic last battle, with even Jedi who had never become Force Ghosts somehow speaking words of encouragement to her. It's possible they were able to do so precisely because of the tear Palpatine's cultists had created when they resurrected him, lasting damage to the veil that allowed even the long dead Jedi to speak.

Parenting in a pandemic? Your teen is counting on you more than ever – Your Valley

Those of us who have parented teenagers tend to agree that it is not for the faint of heart I am currently in the thick of it with two teen boys at home. When you throw in a pandemic and my job as a pediatric ICU physician, things get even more interesting.

Teenagers are not known for making great decisions. They drive too fast, climb too high, experiment too much, and rarely consider the consequences before they act. The teenage body, at the top of its physical game, and the teenage brain, convinced of its own immortality, team up to create an extraordinary risk-taking human. As it turns out, biology is one big reason the Big Air categories at the X-Games are full of teens.

Unfortunately, the same things that make teenagers incredible extreme athletes can work against them in a pandemic. How can you possibly convince a teenager, who is biologically programmed to believe they will live forever, that they should wear a mask and stay 6 feet away from all their closest friends 100% of the time? You cant.

As we age, our brains develop and our bodies take longer to recover. We suddenly understand mortality in a way that we were incapable of when we were younger. We cannot and should not expect our kids to act like adults. They just arent there yet, so it is the adults job to protect them.

We understand this inherently and have difficult conversations with them about drinking and driving, promising to pick them up no matter what time they call.

But right now, during a pandemic that can insidiously spread and cause fatal infection without warning, by the time we get that call, it may be too late. They may have already contracted the virus and be bringing it home with them.

Our teenagers need us now more than ever and they need us to be their parents, not their friends. They need us to be strong and decisive. When they beg to go to a party because everyone is going, they need us to say No! They need us to actively limit their exposure to other teens. They need us to model social-distancing and mask-wearing. They need us to advocate for the safe reopening of schools, which requires all of us to control the virus in our communities that surround our schools.

A recent study showed children over the age of 10 spread COVID-19 as readily as adults. In the ICU, we are bracing for the influx of patients that we fear will arrive once schools are back in session, and we dread giving families the worst news of their lives.

We need parents to understand that once their child arrives in our ICU, we will do everything in our power to help their child as they fight the virus, but once they are infected, we cannot protect them from the ravaging course the coronavirus may take on their body. A far better plan is to prevent them from ever needing to go to the pediatric ICU in the first place.

If youre a parent, do not allow your teen to congregate in large groups and certainly do not facilitate these gatherings yourself. Insist that every family member wear a mask when youre around other people. Social distancing and mask-wearing are simple, straightforward prevention measures that are more powerful than any treatment we have in the hospital.

Your teen may roll their eyes and slam their door, but they are counting on you now more than ever.

You got this.

Alan Graham, MD is a doctor specializing in pediatric critical care.
