Doom Patrol Leaves the Fate of the Whole Team Up in the Air | CBR – CBR – Comic Book Resources

The season finale of DC Universe's Doom Patrol ended on a massive cliffhanger, leaving the fate of the entire team in jeopardy.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the season finale of Doom Patrol Season 2, "Wax Patrol," available now on DC Universe and HBO Max.

Season 2 of DC'sDoom Patrol series recently came to an end with an unintended cliffhanger. Production of the series was forced to halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and as a result, the final episode of the season couldn't be shot. So now, Episode 9, "Wax Patrol" serves as a finale one that leaves the fate of the whole team in doubt.

After learning of Niles Caulder's deceptions and true intentions, the team spent most of Season 2 grappling with the aftermath of his betrayal. He was responsible for the accidents which transformed each of them into freaks, but his reasons were complex. He was seeking a way to gain immortality so he could be an ever-watchful caretaker for his daughter, Dorothy.

Introduced in Season 2, Dorothy is an ape-faced girl with incredible psychic powers. Able to manifest beings from her imagination and connected to a strong spiritual force, Dorothy is immortal and perpetually remains an 11-year old girl. Her powers are so great, she struggles to control them, and all season has been taunted by an entity called the Candlemaker.

A malevolent being who preys on Dorothy's fears when she's at her weakest, the Candlemaker can grant any wish Dorothy makes, but he always bends her wish to commit monstrous acts of violence. Niles feared what would happen to Dorothy without proper supervision, and thus began his journey for immortality, which resulted in the birth of the Doom Patrol.

Unfortunately for Niles, he had to give up the talisman keeping him alive in order to save the team, and as Dorothy is exposed to the outside world, she has begun to grow up. With Dorothy losing control of her growing powers as she entered puberty, the Doom Patrol refusing to forgive Niles and his own health failing, hehas resigned himself to allowing his wizard friend, Kipling, to kill her.

Wanting to spend one last day with his daughter, Nilesbrings Dorothy to a fair. However, he and Kipling are too late, and, under duress, Dorothy is forced to unleash the Candlemaker. Not wanting people to be hurt, Dorothy sends her imaginary friend, a giant spider named Herschel, to warn the Doom Patrol. The team rallies at the fair, despite their feelings towards Niles.

The Candlemaker has taken over the fair, sealing people in wax. The team is separated and forced to confront their own imaginary friends, conjured by the Candlemaker. One by one they are defeated, with everyone, but Niles and Jane, sealed in the Candlemaker's wax. Cliff suffered the worst fate, being broken down into scrap before getting covered in wax.

Janeisout of commission too, but for different reasons. Stuck in the Well, the darkest part of her subconscious, Jane has been replaced by a former, primary personality, Miranda. However, as Miranda is called back to the Underground and questioned by the other personalities, Jane learns the truth. She finds the corpse of Miranda floating in the dark waters of the Well, and Miranda is in fact her abusive Daddy personality attempting to seize control of Jane.

Meanwhile, Slava, Dorothy's mother, appears in a vision and urges her daughter to embrace her powers and face the Candlemaker alone. Despite Niles' desperate pleas, Dorothy conjures a weapon with her mind and moves closer. Before she can fight, she is snatched by the Candlemaker and pulled away, leaving Niles' devastated.

The end of Season 2 finds the Doom Patrol in incredibly dire circumstances. There's no telling what could happen to each character. No matter what, it seems their fate and the fate of the world rests on Dorothy.

Streaming on DC Universe and HBO Max, Doom Patrol stars Brendan Fraser as Cliff Steele, Diane Guerrero as Crazy Jane, Matt Bomer as Larry Trainer, April Bowlby as Rita Farr, Jovian Wade as Vic Stone, and Timothy Dalton as Niles Caulder.

When he first arrives on the scene, we learn that Vegeta is in fact the prince of the Saiyan race, seeking to gain immortality from the Dragon Balls. These days Vegeta, along with Goku are the central figures of modern Dragon Ball with the most recent film, Dragon Ball Super: Broly, further exploring the backstory of the character.

These are the top ten Vegeta heavy episodes, as rated by the users on IMDb.

In this episode, Vegeta battles Android 19, fairing infinitely better than Goku did. The remaining Z Fighters and Dr. Gero watch from the sidelines as Vegeta rips off the Androids hands, taking away his energy absorbing ability. As 19 attempts to run from the battlefield, Vegeta launches a Big Bang Attack which obliterates the Android.

Vegeta than approaches Android 20 and challenges him but the Android flees. Vegeta advises the others to leave and goes after Android 20 alone, however Piccolo and the others give chase anyway. Growing frustrated when he cant locate 20, Vegeta attempts to blast away the entire area, but 20 absorbs the energy instead.

Jumping ahead to the Babidi Saga, Vegeta takes on Pui Pui inside Babidis spaceship. As the battle rages on, the characters find themselves transported to Pui Puis home planet, designed to give him an advantage. An overly confident Pui Pui remarks on how his planets gravity is ten times that of Earth. The effort is proven fruitless as Vegeta explains he doesn't even feel it and is more than capable to handle the gravity of the planet.

Vegeta feels something attacking him from the inside as Babidi gains control of his mind. When the process ends, Vegeta sports a large M on his forehead and exhibits a more violent persona.

The group is then transported by Babidi to the World Martial Arts Tournament, where Vegeta blows a hole in the stadium stands, killing many of the spectators. Goku watches on in horror, witnessing a version of Vegeta long since dead, come back to life. Vegeta stares back at Goku, a large evil smile wiped across his face.

Continuing on from the previous episode, Vegeta shocks everyone watching from the sidelines as he makes short work of Buu. Piccolo, takes noteof Vegeta having become more powerful than Gohan was when he fought Cell. However, no matter how much damage Buu receives, his regeneration abilities allow him to keep coming back.

An enraged Buu then detaches a portion of his own body and uses it to create a bind which wraps itself aroundVegeta, trapping him and applying enormous pressure, almost crushing him. Buu thenproceeds to pummel the Saiyan in revenge for his previous efforts.

As the heart virus starts to attack Goku from the inside, Android 19 deals damage from the outside. The Z fighters attempt to assist their friend but 20 intervenes, forcing them back. 19 starts to drain the energy from Goku and as he does, Vegeta delivers a massive kick to 19s head.

Thanks to Vegeta, Yamcha is able to take Goku home to give him the antidote. Surprising everyone again, Vegeta than transforms into a Super Saiyan. He goes into depths about his training to get there and when he finally reached a breaking point at being unable to surpass Goku, he was finally able to transform.

Vegeta and Goku begin their long overdue rematch in the deserted battleground requested by Goku. The two titans clash, delivering tremendous damage to each other which will ultimately fuel the energy needed to fuel Majin Buus revival.

Vegeta starts to gain the upper hand in the fight, with Goku experiencing he full effects of his seven year training. It is here where Vegeta reveals (via flashbacks) all the times he has felt humiliated by Goku and how it is now time for the tables to turn and for Vegeta to gain his honor back.

Vegeta and Goku stare each other down in the middle of the ring, as shocked onlookers from the World Martial Arts Tournament watch in horror. Goku realizes that Vegeta allowed Babidi to take control of him. Vegeta then proceeds to blow up another part of the arena, killing more spectators.

Vegeta challenges Goku to fight, which he reluctantly agrees but requests Babidi move them to a place away from people. However, the Supreme Kai steps in and tries to stop the two from engaging in combat. When Goku threatens the Kai with an energy blast, he concedes. The group is then transported to a barren wasteland where Vegeta and Goku begin their fight, whilst Gohan along with the Supreme Kai attempt to stop Buu from hatching.

This episode picks from the previous, where Vegeta killed Nappa for disappointing him in his fight against Goku. In true Goku fashion, he requests the two move to a more remote location and orders Krillin and Gohan to return to Kame House.

Vegeta and Goku face off on their new battleground, with Gokus abilities catching the Saiyan prince off guard. However, Vegeta is able to match Gokus rise in strength and starts to dominate the fight. The prince begins to mock Goku, believing that he is truly the superior fighter. Unknown to Vegeta though, is Gokus secret weapon, Kaio-ken times three.

In the midst of the Frieza saga, a cocky Vegeta gets his comeuppance from disobeying his former leader, Frieza. Now in his final (or natural) form, the tyrant delivers a horrific beating onto the Saiyan prince. As Frieza prepares the death blow, Goku appears, now fully recovered from his battle against Ginyu.

Vegeta comes to the conclusion that Goku has now become a Super Saiyan and begins to taunt Frieza. This leads to Vegeta receiving a death beam straight through the chest. As he slowly dies Vegeta warns Goku not to show any mercy to Frieza. He explains the past tragedies inflicted upon himself and the Saiyan race at the hands of Frieza before finally passing away.

Trunks and Goten attack Buu, managing to rescue Vegeta. Vegeta then hugs Trunks before knocking him and Goten out. Piccolo collects the two boys, as Vegeta asks him to take them far away from the battlefield. Aware that Vegeta plans on killing himself to defeat Buu, Piccolo does as requested.

Vegeta asks Piccolo if he will see Goku in the next life, however Piccolo informs Vegeta that his life of evil deeds would result in a different version of the afterlife for him. After Piccolo leaves, Vegeta taunts Buu and puts his plan into motion, amassing an enormous amount of energy to turn himself into an explosion.

Emily Dickinson is the unlikely hero of our time – The Conversation US

Since her death in 1886, Emily Dickinson has haunted us in many forms.

She has been the precocious little dead girl admired by distinguished men; the white-clad, solitary spinster languishing alone in her bedroom; and, in more recent interpretations, the rebellious teenager bent on smashing structures of power with her torrential genius.

As the world continues to endure the ravages of COVID-19, another ghost of Dickinson steps into view. This one, about 40 years old, seems by turns vulnerable and formidable, reclusive and forward. She carries the dead weight of crises beyond her control, but remains unbowed by it.

It was while drafting my dissertation, which explores the meaning of old age in America, that I first encountered this Dickinson. She has been with me ever since.

Most admirers of Dickinsons poetry know that she spent a considerable part of her adult life in what we call self-imposed confinement, rarely venturing outside the family homestead in Amherst, Massachusetts. Less known, perhaps, is that the final 12 years of her life were passed in a state of nearly perpetual mourning.

It began with the death of her father. For all his stern comportment, Edward Dickinson had enjoyed a special relationship with Emily, his middle child. When her surviving letters declare him the oldest and oddest sort of a foreigner, one hears the affectionate annoyance that comes with real devotion. He died in 1874, away from home.

Loss followed loss. Favorite correspondent Samuel Bowles died in 1878. With the passing of Mary Ann Evans, otherwise known as George Eliot, in 1880, Dickinson lost a kindred spirit a mortal who, in her words, had already put on immortality while living. A very different loss was that of Dickinsons mother, Emily Norcross Dickinson, with whom she enjoyed little or no rapport for much of their life together, but who became at least somewhat precious to her daughter on her deathbed. That was in 1882, the same year that took from her literary idol Ralph Waldo Emerson and early mentor Charles Wadsworth.

The following year saw the death of her cherished eight-year-old nephew, Gilbert, from typhoid fever, his illness having spurred one of Dickinsons rare excursions beyond the homestead. The year after that, Judge Otis Phillips Lord, with whom she pursued the only confirmed romantic relationship of her life, finally succumbed to an illness of several years and was wearily dubbed by the poet our latest Lost.

[Get the best of The Conversation, every weekend. Sign up for our weekly newsletter.]

What impact did so much grief have on the mind of one of Americas greatest visionary artists? Her letters say little enough. Writing to Mrs. Samuel Mack in 1884, however, she frankly admits: The Dyings have been too deep for me, and before I could raise my heart from one, another has come.

The word deep is an arresting choice, making it sound as though Dickinson is drowning in a pile of dead loved ones. Each time she comes up for air, yet another body is added to the great mass.

This is characteristic of Dickinson. If her imagination shrinks from visualizing breadth, it thrives on depth. Some of the most captivating images in her poetry are piles of things that cannot be piled: thunder, mountains, wind. During the Civil War, she uses the same technique to represent soldiers heroic and terrible sacrifice:

In describing her more personal losses of the 1870s, Dickinson seems to imagine yet another pile of human corpses rising before her eyes. Or maybe it is the same pile, her loved ones added to the dead troops whose fate she kept contemplating to the end of her own life. Seen in this light, the Dyings appear not just too deep but unfathomably so.

At the time of this writing, the pile of lives that overshadows our lives is 800,000 deep and getting deeper by the hour. Dickinsons imagery shows how keenly she would have understood what we might feel, dwarfed by a mountain of mortality that will not stop growing. The same anger, exhaustion and sense of futility were her constant companions in later life.

Fortunately, she had other companions. As recent studies have shown, Dickinson was the best kind of social networker, maintaining profoundly generative relationships by correspondence from the family homestead. Her poetic output, though greatly diminished toward the end of her life, never ceases, and its offerings include some of her richest meditations on mortality, suffering and redemption.

These words resonate in the current crisis, during which protecting the daily mind has become a full-time job. News reports, with their updated death tolls, erode our intellectual and spiritual foundations. All seems lost.

But if strain and sorrow are palpable in this poem, so is courage. Dickinsons lonely speaker chooses to express what she has felt, to measure and record the burden of loss that life has thrust upon her. Beliefs, once bandaged, may heal. And while no man has ever been bold enough to confront the deeper Consciousness that so many deaths expose within the human mind, the speaker will not rule out doing so herself. There is still room in this blighted world for the kind of visionary experience from which hope not only springs, but flourishes.

Living in the shadow of death, Dickinson remained enamored of life. This, as much as anything, makes her a hero of our time.

The benefits of experience – UConn Daily Campus

At the start of every sporting season, there is a debate over who the best rookies will be, what new talent will rise up from the lower scenes and take their place among the highest levels of their sport and which ones will collapse. We expect the rookies to be the surprises, the ones who rise up and surpass their expectations and lead their teams to victory. We talk about experienced players very differently.

For veterans, we ask who will fail, get caught by age or a change in technique or style that renders their previous job obsolete. This is especially the case in esports, because the age range skews much younger than traditional sports. Most of the competitors are done by 30 and it often feels like theres a never-ending line of rookies ready to take their places. Veterans are often seemingly only there to give an experienced voice to a roster, if theyre there at all. But over the weekend, we saw the benefits of having veterans on talented rosters.

Schalke 04, who went into the weekend on a 7-game winning streak, certainly benefited from Gilius and Odoamnes playoff experience.Odoamnes experience in particular proved helpful in game one of their series against SK gaming.SK went for a lane swap, a maneuver that was relatively popular in season three but has been uncommon in pro games since then.Afterword, S04s jungler Gilius said in an interview that Odo is the king of laneswaps, the guy shot called everything and told everyone what to do.

Odo would, in his own interview, comment that back when I first started playing in LEC, thats when lane swaps first started. His experience as a veteran who had played at the highest levels through that meta allowed S04 to survive the game and get out to an early lead in the series, on their way to a 3-0 victory over SK. On the other hand, we saw the much less experienced MAD Lions fall 3-1 in a bloody series against G2. The more experienced roster, G2, excelled in the playoffs even though this split they had been worse. Their experience in best-of-fives certainly helped them on their way to this victory, though it was far from the only factor.

Now MAD, who was one game from Worlds in week eight, has to win a best-of-five against Schalke in order to advance. Schalke, who have won ten games in a row including a victory over the Lions in week eight which helped keep them out of Worlds, are one series from immortality, one series from unseating 2018 summer Cloud9 for the best comeback performance resulting in a Worlds appearance.

In North America, were reminded that as good as veteran players can be, theyre not always enough. When Golden Guardians played against TSM in the lower bracket on Sunday, it was midlaner-turned-support Huhi who excelled in the first few games, despite the fact that prior to the season most people had considered him washed-up. His efforts were not enough to win the series and keep Golden Guardians in the playoffs, but they still earned him high praise from the community and showed that the veteran player can still perform despite the fact that most people assumed he was past his prime.

Heading into next week and the semi-finals for both the LEC and the LCS, the final team from each region going to Worlds will soon be decided. Can Cloud9 beat TSM one more time and secure their place at Worlds, or will TSM finally return to the World stage and deny Cloud9 an appearance at Worlds for the first time in the organizations history?

Will Schalke 04 beat the MAD Lions and deny the rookie roster their Worlds appearance, or will Schalkes win streak finally be ended in a devastating defeat that leaves them inches from glory, but still forever so far away?

Netflix Modernizing The Sandman Offers Big Opportunities | CBR – CBR – Comic Book Resources

The updated setting of Sandman presents a lot of new opportunities when it comes to the plot and the gender of a few characters.

Neil Gaiman provided a rare update on the status of the upcoming live-action Netflix adaptation of Sandman at DC FanDome. The live-action series was greenlit back in 2019, and the first season will consist of 11 episodes, comprising the first graphic novel collection ("Preludes and Nocturnes"). Gaiman has described the series as a "slightly looser, but still faithful adaptation," with the setting of the original graphic novel having been updated for the modern-day.

Gaiman also addressed Netflix's adaptation of Sandman and how the show's updated setting will have ramifications on characters and the plot. "What we're doing with Netflix is saying 'Okay, it's still going to start in 1916 but the thing that happens in Sandman #1 the point where it starts is not 1988, it's now,'" he explained. "How does that change the story? What is that going to do to the gender of characters? What is that going to do to the nature of characters? What is it going to do to the story? That is going to be a delight... it gives us tremendous freedom. If we were doing it now, what would Sandman be? That is very liberating." When looking at Gaiman's comments, it's clear the series has some big opportunities with its new setting.

RELATED:Neil Gaiman Explains How He Got DC to Let Him Break All the Rules With Sandman

Sandman has always been a series ahead of its time when it came to its depiction of gender, the graphic novel captured a significant female readership mostly due to its imaginative storytelling and large female supporting cast. If gender identity is an aspect of that's going to be more highlighted in the live-action series, then there area few ways it can be reflected.Dream and his six siblings in the Endless (Death, Destiny, Destruction, Desire, Despair and Delirium) are personifications of ideasthat can take whatever form they wish to appear as, with different cultures conceptualizing them quite differently. Since the Endless are personifications of abstract ideas, it makes sense they could be re-evaluated over time and have a different appearance or gender. Desire, the younger sibling of Morpheus, is the embodiment of want and appears as an androgynous figure capable of gender-fluidity, appearing either male, female, both or neither depending on the situation.

Aside from the obvious changes to technology and the clothing trends, the updated setting will also change aspects of the plot. After the events of Sandman: Overture, a greatly weakened Morpheus was captured by Roderick Burgess and was imprisoned in a glass box in 1916. Roderick was attempting to capture Death in order to gain immortality but ended capturing Dream instead. Dream was imprisoned for nearly seven decades, being inadvertently released in 1988 by Alex Burgess, the elderly son of the long-deceased Roderick. Since his father was long dead at this point, Dream enacts his revenge on the Burgess family by cursing Alex with an unending series of nightmares.

Now that the setting has been changed to our contemporary period, Alex would have to be significantly younger if he is going to be used the exact same way he was in the source material. Other characters like Doctor Destiny, the son of Roderick's former mistress and Rose Walker will have to have their ages adjusted as well in order to match with the story. Another consequence of the updated setting is that as a result of Morpheus' century-long capture, a worldwide epidemic of sleeping sickness affected large swathes of the population, with people not being able to wake up until Dream was freed from his imprisonment. This plot point was especially important for Rose's grandmother UnityKinkaid, as she was one of the individuals who suffered through the sickness.

RELATED:Neil Gaiman and G. Willow Wilson Discuss the Effect of Their Nightmares on Writing Sandman

The nature of Dream, the protagonist of the series will also be fundamentally changed due to the updated setting. He was imprisoned for over a century, and immediately after being released, he went on a quest to reclaim his stolen items and repair the state of The Dreaming. After finishing his quest, Dream felt dejected and aimless until his older sister Death reminded him of his responsibilities. However, with today's world being even more directionless than the original setting, it's unclear how Morpheus will recover from his century-long incarceration and find meaning. This aspect of the updated settingis surely one that Gaiman is interested in exploring in the live-action series.

Netflix's modernization of Sandman offers a lot of new opportunities for the series to explore. However, even the smallest change could have massive effects on the overall story and theme. Luckily, with Gaiman on board as executive producer, the live-action series will have to remain faithful to its source material.

Attleboro Arts Museum will help kick off Big Read with ‘Ugly Truth’ exhibition – The Sun Chronicle

Since 2007, the Attleboro Arts Museum has been an active partner in the NEA Big Read: Attleboro. In this National Endowment for the Arts program, participants are encouraged to read the same book at the same time and extend their connection to the chosen text through local arts and culture activities.

This year the City of Attleboro will be reading the novel Circe by Madeline Miller. In response, the Attleboro Arts Museum presents Scylla: The Ugly Truth Revealed, an invitational exhibition inspired by Millers award-winning novel.

The book reimagines the life of Circe, sorceress of the Odyssey. To escape her lonely existence and the cruel gods of her youth, Circe seeks the company of a mortal fisherman, falls in love, and grants him immortality with the help of a magical herb.

When another nymph, Scylla, lures him away, Circe succumbs to jealousy and uses the herb to punish Scylla and reveal the ugliness within her. Scylla turns into a six-headed sea monster who will smash ships and feed on mortals for the next thousand years.

From Sept. 11-18, Scylla: The Ugly Truth Revealed will appear in-gallery at the Attleboro Arts Museum and online at attleboroartsmuseum.org. The exhibition features interpretations of six-headed, ravenous monsters.

The creatures depicted in Scylla are designed to spark reflections and conversations that address emotional and behavioral monsters that can lurk within individuals, museum Executive Director and Chief Curator Mim Brooks Fawcett said. The monsters on view may or may not have six heads and twelve legs, but they will be persistent, powerful and require taming.

On Saturday, Sept. 12, an NEA Big Read 2020 Kickoff and two reservation-only exhibition afternoon viewings will be held at the museum. Space is limited due to state and local health and safety mandates. Reservations are required by Sept. 11

Exhibiting artists will include Laura White Carpenter, Monica DeSalvo, Liz Sibley Fletcher, Ann-Marie Gillett, Ellie Huntress, Gwendolyn Lanier, Madeleine Lord, Susan Medyn, Emily Oliveira, Theresa Pedrotti, Ellen Shattuck Pierce, Nora Rabins, Lisa Redburn, Linda Rogers, Abby Rovaldi, Heather Stivison, Kerry St. Pierre, and Jess Tracey.

Attleboros NEA Big Read 2020 is funded by Bristol County Savings Bank; a grant from the Attleboro Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency; and the Rotary Club of Attleboro.

Lord of the Rings: 10 Things That Make No Sense About Orcs – Screen Rant

Orcs may be one of the prominent species in Lord of the Rings, but not everything about them makes total sense.

The word orc likely conjures the image of a great beast of a creature ripping itself from its slime-covered cocoon in front of Christopher Lee's Saruman in the Lord of the Rings films. Orcs were always the majority of foot soldiers for Sauron in his war against the rest of Middle Earth.

RELATED: The Lord of the Rings: 5 Reasons Legolas Is an Underrated Character (& 5 Why He's Overrated)

They always served evil and were born of evil, and yet, despite the simplicity in their creation and motivation, there are a few things about orcs in The Lord of the Rings, and even in The Hobbit, that don't quite add up. A few questions remain about the ugliest creatures in all of Middle Earth.

According to Tolkien, at least some of the orcs used to be elves. That's right, some orcs have the same ancestors as the beautiful Legolas. Apparently they were tortured and that's how they changed both their appearance and their personalities to the gross and evil kind. They, like elves, can die in battle, but viewers never spend enough time with them to see if, at least some orcs, still possess the immortality of their elf ancestors. Despite the explanations, it's hard to believe that torture can create an entirely new species, bot just a new attitude or outlook.

Orcs, like elves, have been around for a long long time, and yet they were never a real issue until the rise of Sauron. Despite their strength, numbers, and dark nature, orcs seemed to only bother dwarfs. What else were they doing all that time? They weren't exactly building their own culture or cities. They were just sort of around waiting for something to do? It's very weird that they weren't a greater problem for the residents of Middle Earth until an independent leader took charge.

Orcs cause major problems for the dwarfs, rather than Middle Earth at large, because they lived underground. Yet, why they lived underground doesn't make much sense. Elves don't live underground, and many of the earliest orcs were descended from elves. Apparently, due to living underground, orcs were also excellent miners, like Gimli and the dwarfs. If they had skills, again, it makes little sense that they weren't a larger problem earlier on for residents across Middle Earth.

Originally Tolkien said that all orcs were descended from tortured elves. However, not all orcs come from elves. Beyond the birth of the Uruk Hai that is seen in the Lord of the Rings films, Tolkien's son later admitted that his father wasn't always comfortable with the idea that orcs came from elves.

RELATED: Lord of the Rings: 10 Things That Make No Sense About Merry & Pippin

With their ever-changing backstory it's no wonder there is confusion over where orcs come from, what they can do, what their goals are, and what they do in their spare time.

Orcs were strong and talented (see their mining skills mentioned above). Yet, it wasn't until Sauron and Saruman that the orcs also started making a real mark on the different people of Middle Earth. Orcs were never depicted as peaceful so, again, it is strange that they weren't out marauding in the countryside earlier in the history of Middle Earth. They could have been a threat all their own, and been very destructive and powerful if they had taken initiative. It's never exactly clear why they didn't.

Uruk hai, unlike their elf descended brethren, are bred by Saruman at Isengard. They come from the dark arts and magical creation rather than torture or biological procreation. It is often said that uruk hai are actually a result of the crossbreeding of humans and orcs. Despite the difference in their backstory, uruk hai are not seen as their own species or creature, they are also known as orcs, even if they are a subset. Why uruk hai would be thrown in with the unsuccessful minions that came before them is a question that remains.

Despite how it appears in the films, with Treebeard being shocked at the destruction Saruman and Isengard have wrought on the forest, the fact that Treebeard didn't know in advance seems absurd. Orcs are not very smart, and yet the Ents are. The Ents claim they can communicate with the trees, and yet fans are supposed to believe no trees sent out the message that they were being destroyed. Orcs are not talented or secretive enough to have pulled off a move like this, even with Saruman's involvement.

In The Lord of the Rings,Peter Jackson makes it clear that orcs need to be constantly watched if they are going to be successful and organized as a fighting force. This means that orcs, despite their strength and numbers, can be very vulnerable to the well-organized men, elves, and dwarfs who they find themselves fighting against.

RELATED: Lord of the Rings: 5 Reasons Gandalf was the Best Member of the Fellowship (& 5 Why it was Aragorn)

While it's obvious that, before Saruman, orcs were not organized enough to do any real damage to Middle Earth, they still managed to survive. What helpful traits led them to this minor success is never revealed.

Elves live in Lindon, Lothlrien, and Rivendell and yet they are all just elves. Yet, orcs are categorized often by where they come from. There are Mordor Orcs, Isengard Orcs, Dol Guldur Orcs, and the Orcs of the Misty Mountains, along with the specific uruk hai. Why a disorganized species would have so many categories assigned to them doesn't make any sense at all.

Despite their numbers and their strength, even as unorganized as they are, it is very strange how well orcs seem to take orders. They march and so as their told when sent out by Saruman to end the age of men and begin the age of the orc. Again, why they never used their strength and numbers to do anything, including to sack towns and villages before they were pulled together by Saruman and Sauron seems like a lost opportunity.

Volvo P1800 [Ultimate Review of the Swedish Coupe] – Sports Car Digest

There is a handful of cars that are famous for their appearances on the TV screen. The Volvo P1800 with the registration plate ST1 is certainly one of them. In the cult series The Saint from the sixties, the legendary ex-James Bond, Roger Moore, took on the role of the main character Simon Templar, and his means of transport was none other than a white Volvo P1800.

It may be hard to believe that the Swedish brand, known for its angular designed and conservatively safe cars, created a curvaceous coupe that is considered among the most beautiful of all time.

The beginnings of the Volvo P1800 seem almost as exciting as the adventures of Simon Templar in The Saint.

The Swedes launched a two-door coupe project with a 2 + 2 seating design in 1957 as part of their European and American sales strategy. It was entrusted to Helmer and Pelle Petterson.

According to the original plans, the car was set to be manufactured in cooperation with Karmann, which fell into the water due to Volkswagens business ties with the German production and bodywork company.

Instead, the British company Jensen took on the responsibility of manufacturing the car. A company known as Pressed Steel made the bodies, with final assembly taking place at Jensen.

With constant problems with personnel, working methods, quality, suppliers and logistics, Volvo moved production and assembly to various plants in Sweden during 1963.

From a technical point of view, the shortened platform and mechanics of the Volvo P1800 were based on the reliable Volvo Amazon.

The P1800 features a rear-wheel drive, front-mounted engine and rear rigid axle. There are also four disc brakes (later models) and a manual four-speed M40 or the M41 transmission. The first 4-cylinder engine called the B18 also came from the Volvo Amazon, but thanks to two built-in carburetors, it provided a bit more power, 100 hp to be exact. Later, with technical renovations, they also introduced new engines, which squeezed out up to 130 hp.

The safety aspect of the fast Volvo P1800 was visionary. It was the worlds first sports coup to have seat belts for all four passengers as standard. Volvo Germany demonstrated the effectiveness of this restraint system in a show in the port of Hamburg in 1961.

Regular small model updates were enough to keep the Volvo P1800, which was drawn in its basic form in 1957, optically fresh for decades.

This included a smooth bumper design in 1964 that replaced the initial cow horn arches, as well as regularly updated radiator grilles.

The first refresh of the P1800 was the 1800S. The letter S stood for Sverige or Sweden in English. This letter was added to announce the move from the British production plants back to production plants in Gothenburg, Sweden. The 1800S also received an additional 8 hp. Later in 1966 the engine was renewed and sported 115 hp which raised the top speed to 175 km/h. The before mentioned B18 four-cylinder engine was replaced in 1969 by the bigger B20 engine that provided 118 hp.

The next big change for the Volvo P1800 happened in 1970. With the introduction of electronic fuel injection technology, the P1800 coupe was now deemed the 1800E. The letter E stood for Einspritzung, the German word for electronic fuel injection.

The 1800E was equipped with the Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection system and provided even more power without hurting the fuel economy. At 130 hp the 1800E went from 0-100 km/h in 9,5 seconds and reached a top speed of 190 km/h. The 1970E was also the first model that featured 4 sets of disc brakes.

Car body shops like Volvoville in the USA built a small series of convertibles and Italian star designers like Fissore or Coggiola presented fastback studies.

Volvo presented a sensational further development of the sports coup in 1971: the Volvo 1800ES as the forerunner of all modern shooting brakes.

Thanks to the large glass tailgate, this sporty design was essentially a two-door station wagon. The final design was chosen based on two prototypes done by Sergio Coggiola and Pietro Frua. The prototype from Frua is still located in the official Volvo Museum. The 1800ES was also much more practical than the coupe version as the rear seats folded down completely, which created a flat loading surface.

The engine of the 1800ES was a downgraded to a 125 hp engine with improved on-road performance and reliability. It was available with a 4 gear M41 over-drive manual transmission or a 3-speed Borg-Warner automatic transmission.

In 1972 the last coupe, a Volvo 1800E, rolled off the assembly line and a year later the Volvo 1800 ES said goodbye.

A total of 47,855 units of the sporty Swedes were built, 39,778 of which were coups.

Since then, the Volvo P1800 has demonstrated its immortality in the classic scene and through its style-defining influence on newer generation Volvos, such as the Volvo Concept Coup from 2013.

A Volvo that looks as chic as an Italian Gran Turismo, drives as spectacularly as a British sports car, and is still as robust as a Swedish tank: the P1800 was a great all-rounder.

The P1800 was designed by a Pelle Petterson, who is now a very successful sailor and a boat designer.

In 1957, Petterson, only 25 years old at the time, presented a design for the Italian design studio Frua that is so timeless that it still looks smart even after 60 years.

Pelle Petersons design was selected out of four main potential options. Being the son of the Volvo design consultant Helmer Petterson, Pelles design was criticized for having an unfair advantage compared to the other design proposals. Many years later, Pelles design was finally acknowledged and Petterson received the credit he deserved for designing one of best-looking coupes ever.

Despite the P1800 looking sporty it was in no way a purebred athlete. It would need a more powerful engine. Thats why the renowned American designer Robert Cumberford got the idea to power the car with a 196-horsepower eight-cylinder engine borrowed from Ford.

The idea was difficult to come into fruition as the car was too loud and heat from the engine dissipated heavily into the passenger cabin forcing plans to be abandoned.

Then came Aston Martin. When they needed a car to test their new four-cylinder, 151 horsepower engine, they thought of the Volvo P1800. Only one prototype was ever built and the project was scrapped. Similar events happened to the convertible version of the P1800 from 1968. Only 50 of versions were built before the project ended.

Even though the P1800 was never designed to be a track car, it still has a rich racing history that is not usually talked about. The P1800 was present in the official racing scene from 1962 to 1972. It started in a total of 164 officially sanctioned races and achieved a finishing ratio of 84%. Of the races, it went on to win 15 times with 17 runner-up places.

Many of these races were endurance races which were perfect for the reliable Volvo. The P1800 appeared on many renowned race tracks including the infamous Nrburgring and Daytona.

Perhaps the most notable driver of the Volvo P1800 race car is Art Riley. Arthur Francis Riley was an endurance-race driver, and owner of Art Riley Motors in Port Washington, N.Y.

As a garage owner and master mechanic Riley was granted one of Americas early Volvo franchises in 1957.

As soon as I drove one, he said, I knew it was faster than a Porsche or MG. They had made a sports car out of a sedan. Riley was amongst the most successful race car drivers of the 1960s. He drove in the SCCA Regional, Divisional and National events, and he also attended FIA international races.

Riley and his red Volvo P1800 coupe came incredibly close to winning the SCCAs 1963 F-Production National Championship. Before that, Riley and his P1800 won the New York Regional championship in that same year. All together, Riley and the P1800 appeared in 64 official races.

One of the most memorable races for the red Volvo P1800 coupe was at the 1965 Sebring 12-hour Grand Prix of Endurance. Driving the number 51 on its flank (But VIN #14 on the firewall), this was to be its final Grand Prix of Endurance.

At the start of the race, Ed Leslie in the Cobra Daytona Coupe stalled in traffic. Being boxed in and with nowhere to go, Art Riley in the #51 Volvo P1800 struck the Daytona in the rear quarter leaving the cars front end damaged. With some nifty panel bashing, the red Volvo continued the race.

This was not to be the only drama #51 would have. Shortly after 3pm the Volvos engine blew on the big bend approaching the Hairpin turn, leaving oil on an already soaked race track. Nick Cove, who was driving at the time, pulled over onto the grass and got under the car to inspect the damage.

While inspecting the underside of the car, George Reed in the #20 Shelby Cobra roadster came in contact with the oil slick and plowed directly into the P1800, narrowly missing Nick Cone and his outstretched legs. By some miracle nobody received major injuries, but not could be said of the Volvo P1800 as can be seen by the photo below.

The P1800 remains a popular sight in historic endurance races and other forms of vintage racing events. One P1800, in particular, called the Mobil 1 has a rich history in the more recent vintage car racing history. Mobil 1 was built in the midst of the 1990s.

It was fitted with the updated B20 engine and several other modifications that increased its power. This red P1800 won 5 consecutive Volvo Historic national championships and remains active to this day.

How reliable are the P1800? Well, you can find the Volvo P1800 in the Guinness Book of Records for the highest certified mileage driven by the original owner in non-commercial service. 77-year-old teacher Irv Gordon bought the Volvo P1800 in 1966 and has crossed the United States with it long and hard. He drove an incredible 3.2 million kilometers in 47 years, which is still a Guinness World Record today.

The car still has its original engine which didnt require any special maintenance apart from the usual. I challenge everyone to go around the world and see as much as possible. Find a reason to travel as you only have one life. No matter how many roads I drove, there was always one I hadnt been on before. Thats why its all the more exciting said Irv Gordon, who drove the 100-horsepower P1800 the same distance as 12 trips to the moon.

This Guinness record only adds to the Swedish brands status of being a manufacturer of high-quality reliable vehicles. The P1800 not only sported the looks but was built well and endured everything that owners demanded of it.

The prices of the Volvo P1800 have been steadily rising since 2010. Even though a massive jump in value is not expected, the P1800 remains a sensible investment for vintage car lovers.

The prices of beautifully maintained P1800 today range between 10 40,000 Euros. The highest price paid for a P1800 so far was achieved by a 1973 Volvo P1800ES Sport Wagon with only 13 thousand miles (21,000 kilometers). It was sold at a US auction by Bonhams Auctioneers to a buyer who paid $92,400 USD in 2014.

A few years ago, Volvo toyed with the idea of creating a modern version of the P1800, dubbed the Volvo concept coupe. This is not a futuristic dream car, but proof of what we are capable of today, said designer Thomas Ingenlath at the time. The concept, which was powered by a 400-horsepower engine, has not (yet) seen the light of production -watch this space.

The Road to a COVID-19 Vaccine and Treatment: a Biochemistry Student Explains – The Whit Online

In just five months, a nonliving particle one hundredth the diameter of a human hair has claimed the lives of more U.S. citizens than the Vietnam and Korean wars combined. This particle is, of course, the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19. Can scientists and medical professionals find a way to stop it before it reaps further destruction?

With the ability to switch from a nonliving to a living state after hijacking a host cells replication machinery, viruses are intricate rogue proteins that occupy a mysterious realm between biochemistry and quantum mechanics. You cannot kill viruses as they are not even alive in the first place, and the field of biochemistry is currently not advanced enough to annihilate all of these sub-microscopic parasites outright without harming you, too. However, viruses utilize a variety of chemicals to accomplish their replication cycles, and it is these specific chemicals that are vulnerable to attack.

Possible treatments for viruses are classified into one of two groups: drugs that inhibit viral replication and drugs that modify your immune response.

To understand how antiviral drugs work, you must know the substances involved in viral replication. COVID-19, aka SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory system coronavirus 2), is a single-stranded RNA virus that enters your cells by binding to a specific receptor on their surfaces, triggering endocytosis (cell entry). The virus reverse transcribes its RNA into double-stranded DNA, the blueprint for protein synthesis, using an enzyme called RNA polymerase. This enzyme lacks a proofreading function, so the resulting DNA code will mutate over time. When COVID-19s completed DNA is integrated into your cells genome, your cell exhausts its own resources manufacturing more viruses.

The viruses escape and infect other cells, eventually killing them.

Remdesivir is the most promising antiviral drug to date, and is the only one authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for emergency use. Its molecular structure mimics that of adenine, a nucleic acid in DNA. When the viruses RNA polymerase mistakenly adds a Remdesivir molecule in place of adenine, the reverse transcription process is stopped. The drugs developer, Gilead, applied for FDA approval Aug. 10 for regular use after presenting preliminary evidence proving the drugs effectiveness. Remdesivir is not a cure for COVID-19; according to the study, treatment only reduces the recovery time of infected patients and does not protect against death. FDA approval is currently pending.

Why prioritize usage of drugs when you could just prevent people from contracting COVID-19 in the first place?

This is where drugs that modify your immune response vaccines come into play. Vaccination is the best way to drastically reduce COVID-19 transmission and to grant immunity to the general public. Antibodies are protective proteins naturally synthesized by your body whenever antigens (foreign substances) invade it. By introducing a weakened form of the virus or a portion of the viruses protein structure into your body, vaccines train your immune system to manufacture its own antibodies in a phenomenon known as active immunity. When you are infected with the actual virus, your immune system swiftly identifies the pathogens protein pattern, induces apoptosis (cell death) in all affected cells, and stops viral spread in its tracks.

Unfortunately, vaccine development is a long and arduous process often riddled with complications, and rushing the development process can sacrifice drug effectiveness and even trigger dangerous immune reactions in patients. To be deemed safe and effective, immunological response data from thousands of testing subjects from specific populations (especially those with underlying health issues and senior citizens) must be compiled and analyzed. This procedure alone can take months or even years. After a vaccine is considered safe and effective, there is the additional hurdle of manufacturing and distributing the vaccine to the entire population.

The rate of vaccine development is progressing at historically fast speeds. According to Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center, the first COVID-19 vaccine was developed for testing just six weeks after the viral sequence was decoded. In comparison, the vaccine for Influenza another RNA virus infecting the respiratory system took 20 years to be developed and 26 years to be approved. In fact, by the time regular citizens were inoculated with this flu vaccine, it was ineffective because the virus had mutated by then.

The most promising SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, Moderna, entered its final phase of testing among 30,000 patients on July 27. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has predicted that researchers will be able to determine Modernas effectiveness by November or December this year, perhaps sooner. The vaccine does its job by transmitting mRNA (messenger RNA) molecules transcribed from DNA to your cells genomes, which causes them to assemble portions of COVID-19 proteins. By introducing these inactive foreign proteins into your body, the vaccine compels your immune system to manufacture antibodies that will identify and eliminate the actual virus. The introduction of a vaccine to the American public would finally allow our country to regain some semblance of normalcy.

The way each person responds to SARS-CoV-2 infection depends on individual genetics, age and pre-existing health conditions. Some patients are not even aware of infection, while others exhibit life-threatening symptoms. COVID-19 enters cells by binding a receptor called the angiotensin enzyme converting 2 (ACE2) receptor. Angiotensin 2 is a powerful enzyme that causes your blood pressure levels to skyrocket and is implicated in inflammation in a way that is still not fully understood. For some, SARS-CoV-2 wreaks havoc on the cardiovascular system, which then damages vascularized organs requiring a constant blood supply. Despite having a 3-4% mortality rate, evidence suggests that COVID-19 is capable of inflicting lasting damage on highly vascularized organs including the lungs and brain.

Scientific advancement is not based on a couple of scientific studies or published papers. Instead, it is founded upon decades of research. Medical professionals, scientists and governments across the globe are engaged in a race unlike any other in history to develop a safe and effective vaccine, and we have learned about COVID-19 faster than any infectious disease in history.

Unanswered questions, however maddening they may be, are powerful catalysts for scientific advancement. As we expand the breadth and depth of our knowledge, not only will we have more answers, but we will have a better understanding of the right questions to ask. To quote Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Phrasing the right question is much harder than finding the right answer.

Ultimately, it is questions not answers that are the driving force behind the growth of humanitys collective intelligence and the development of a successful vaccine.

New Book, Leaving Drug and Alcohol Addictions for Good, Reveals the Missing Link for Recovery – Press Release – Digital Journal

Denver, CO, USA - August 27, 2020 - A groundbreaking book on drug and alcohol recovery has been released by Joseph Eisele and Sharon Montgomery.

'Leaving Drug and Alcohol Addictions for Good: How Biochemical Restoration Radically Improves Your Chances of Recovery' provides readers with the missing link needed for full recovery: biochemical restoration. Biochemical restoration has helped more than a thousand patients of InnerBalance, the recovery center that Eisele cofounded, break free of the addiction cycle. This discovery is what saved Eisele himself from his own near-deadly ride on the addiction train. 'Leaving Drug and Alcohol Addictions for Good' is written with Sharon Montgomery, who's personal story is included in the book.

"This book is important because it tells how a person or family struggling with addictions can find success working a combination of biochemical repair along with the standard mental/emotional program for addictions," says William Billica, MD, FAAFP, and a practitioner at Tri-Life Health in Fort Collins, CO.

Biochemical restoration is what brings metabolic systems into balance. It is fundamental to full recovery. It stops the discouraging cycle of relapses, and can even play a role in keeping individuals off the addiction train in the first place.

"I know a lot of us with years of recovery who are still struggling with sleep, mood, diet, etc., and I think biochemical restoration is this missing link," says Jordan Fouts, a philanthropy professional who is now marking her fifteenth year in recovery following the inclusion of biochemical restoration in her treatment. "I'm thrilled to have this resource to direct people to."

The book is the result of years of research and study that Eisele undertook as an accredited addiction specialist, after succumbing to addiction as a teenager-total, severe, desperate, sinking so low that suicide seemed to be his only option.

"It was when I discovered this missing link of biochemical restoration that I started on my path to full recovery," says Eisele.

The virtual book launch celebration is scheduled for Thursday, September 3, 2020, at 6:30 p.m. Mountain Time.

'Leaving Drug and Alcohol Addictions for Good: How Biochemical Restoration Radically Improves Your Chances of Recovery' will be available on https://innerbalancehealthcenter.com/addiction-book.

About Sharon Montgomery

Sharon Montgomery is an author and business storyteller. Sharon works internationally and locally helping small business owners create "Informational Narratives," her solution to boring, cheesy, salesy corporate books and biographies. 'Leaving Drug and Alcohol Addictions for Good" was a 3-year process working with Joseph Eisele.

About Joseph Eisele

Joseph Eisele is the co-founder and clinical director of InnerBalance Health Center in Loveland, Colorado. A holistic treatment center established in 1999 for individuals battling drug and alcohol addiction, the center provides a comprehensive program that employs ongoing biochemical restoration as a critical step in long-term, sustainable recovery.

Eisele is a pioneer in the use of biochemical restoration, the "missing link" he discovered during his own journey to sobriety more than thirty-five years ago. He holds state and national certifications as an alcohol and drug therapist and received specialized training as an interventionist from the Johnson Institute, which maintains strong ties with the Hazelden Foundation Center for Public Advocacy. Twitter Had A Meltdown Over What ‘Red Flags’ To Look Out For On a Man’s Bookshelf – Junkee

"Hitting my head with a hammer so I can become illiterate for all the beautiful, amazing Queen's out there"

A single Tweet about the warning signs on a mans bookshelf effectively ruined Twitter for a whole day.

US journalist Jess McHugh started a furor on Tuesday when she tweeted out the top 7 warning signs on a mans bookshelf, listing off a few classics for any intellectual bro Hemingway, Infinite Jest, Bukowski and libertarian Ayn Rand.

The other references felt awfully specific who reads Goethe or says that Lolita or Fathers & Sons, a staple of 19th century Russian literature, is their favourite book?

The tweet caught on, and responses were pretty split between sharp agreeance and mocking, as well as a series of men who then shared their bookshelves or went through the list truly the biggest red-flag of them all.

For some, the post itself was deeply triggering, bringing back memories of boyfriends past.

Wish Id known about the too much Hemingway with my college boyfriend, replied Giulia Pines. He actually READ ME PASSAGES in this swoony voice he always used, like this was the most profound insight into humanity Id ever get.

Many suggested their own personal red-flags. There was the category of books they should have outgrown by adulthood, such as On The Road, Catcher In The Rye and Into The Wild or people who are really into Vonnegut. Then there were suggestions of a good bookshelf, which is just a really embarrassing idea to put out into the world.

Meanwhile, others counter-argued that having an obsession with Young Adult fiction as an adult is far worse than being an insufferable lite-intellectual.

Most people were just pretty frustrated with the earnest traction the tweet got in the first place, given that owning or reading a book doesnt mean you politically align with its message or author, and we also had this conversation 20,000 times on Tumblr back in 2011.

Overall, it was a terrible time on Twitter.com filled with terrible opinions, salvage by the meta-joke responses which laughed at how laughing at someones bookshelf is much more of a red flag than having read Infinite Jest. Enjoy those below.

There’s more than one way to deliver the mail – Newsday

U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy is testifying before Congress to defend his management of the Postal Service amid concern over voting by mail and the integrity of the November election. Democrats have questioned whether recent slowdowns and cutbacks at the post office under DeJoy may be part of an effort to suppress voting orchestrated by President Donald Trump, according to Bloomberg News. DeJoy told a Senate committee that allegations that cutbacks at the post office are aimed at having an impact on the November election are an "outrageous claim." DeJoy said he's simply trying run the Postal Service, which loses money, more efficiently and like a business.

Bloomberg Opinion figured it would be a good time to see how mail delivery works in other parts of the world, and whether the types of issues that are in focus in the U.S. exist elsewhere. Here are the results:

Germany's Publicly-Traded Post Office

Germany will mark the 20-year anniversary of its postal service becoming a publicly traded company in November. Today, Deutsche Post AG boasts a 47 billion euro ($56 billion) market capitalization, is nicely profitable, employs more than half a million people and is held in generally high esteem by the public. The shrinking German letters business accounts for just 15% of its 63 billion euros total revenues; services such as express delivery, freight forwarding and e-commerce make up the rest.

Yet for all its profits and solid management, Deutsche Post is hardly the corporate embodiment of Ayn Rand. It's still obliged to deliver domestic mail six days a week, the unionized German workforce sometimes goes on strike and the state still owns one-fifth of the shares via the KFW development bank. Retaining the state as an anchor shareholder has boosted Deutsche Post's credit standing, allowing it to borrow cheaply. Before becoming a public company, it also transferred a big chunk of civil servant pension liabilities to the government, lightening a burden that weighs heavy on the U.S. Postal Service.

While there are occasional gripes about service quality and rising postage costs, Deutsche Post is a regulated entity and no longer much of a political football. Public aversion to post office closures was overcome by allowing independent retail stores to operate small postal franchises, which are open longer. Customers can also collect internet shopping from unstaffed parcel machines and buy stamps online. And voting by mail has steadily risen to almost 30% of votes cast in the German federal election, and is uncontroversial.

The U.K.'s Royal Mail: Essential Yet Struggling

At the peak of the pandemic in April, a British postman managed to deliver a parcel labelled "vital survival stuff" whose address was simply "somewhere in Sheffield." The postman located the addressee through Facebook and delivered the package of chocolate bars from a sender in Sweden.

Apart from that, things have been pretty grim at Royal Mail, Britain's privatized mail service, which is struggling to modernize in the face of labor opposition. It has recently faced job cuts and restructurings, threats of strike action, walkouts over poor safety measures (four postal workers have died from COVID-19) and a 1.5 million pound ($1.96 million) fine for tardy delivery of first-class mail and overcharging customers for stamps.

Royal Mail has a universal service obligation, and is required to make deliveries six times a week around the country, so it is limited on the cost-cutting side. Somewhat confusingly, it was separated in 2012 from the state-controlled Post Office, which runs the network of over 11,600 branches that provide handles postal as well as government and financial services. Post Office branches are largely run by franchise partners and independent retailers, often known as subpostmasters, who are paid a fixed fee or commission. The number of branches has halved over the years, but 99% of the U.K. population must still be within three miles, and 90% within one mile, of an outlet. And yet it too has had to grapple with changing demand in the the digital age, a shrinking revenue base and court battles with stakeholders.

Whatever their respective struggles, Brits seem attached to both services, for different reasons. The decline of old-fashioned mail and the rise of Amazon.com have not shaken belief that a universal service obligation for mailed communications, symbolized by those iconic red pillar boxes that have been around since 1852, is part of the social contract. More than 18% of ballots cast in the 2019 general election were postal ballots.

As for the Post Office, for all the concerns about branch closures and declining profits, it made an operating profit of 40 million pounds in 2019. A 2016 study put the social value of the Post Office - what people were willing to pay for its services - at between 4.3 billion pounds and 9.7 billion pounds.

Japan's Post Office Is Bigger Than Citigroup

What's Japan's largest financial company after Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc.? By some measures, it's the country's postal service, Japan Post Holdings Co., with an asset base larger than those of Citigroup Inc. and Wells Fargo & Co.

Postal savings banks have been around almost as long as state postal services, and Japan's has long been a behemoth. Since the late 19th century, much of its wealth was built upon deposits taken in the country's post offices and reinvested in nation-building infrastructure. Thanks to income from Japan Post's separately-listed banking and insurance arms, the parent company is forecast to make 280 billion yen ($2.65 billion) of net income this year despite its core postal business not earning a cent.

To be sure, life as a Japanese bank in the 21st century isn't all that more lucrative than existence as a postal service especially when, as has historically been the case, you're obliged to invest in negative-yielding Japanese government debt. The parent company and Japan Post Bank Ltd. have each lost almost half their equity value since a 2015 initial public share offering. Still, analysts expect the group as a whole to make stable profits well into the current decade, and retail investors continue to sock their money away. The 4.48 trillion yen increase in deposits in the June quarter was the biggest in records dating back to 2014. There are worse ways of keeping a public service in operation without draining the public purse.

Australia Post Is Looking to Pivot

The coronavirus pandemic has underscored the ways that Australia Post has been torn in two directions in recent years. For years, the balancing act pursued by its managers has been around minimizing costs from its loss-making letter delivery arm while maximizing its profits from parcels, where its dominant position has helped it prosper from growing volumes of online shopping.

Letter volumes have fallen by more than half since 2008, and one of the first moves AusPost made was to switch to deliveries only every second day, rather than daily - a temporary measure that few would be surprised to see become permanent. At the same time, parcel volumes were up around 50% or more on usual levels at the peak of the lockdown, and the company is looking to increase the frequency of deliveries to handle the flood.

Growing numbers of parcels will lift revenues, but they may cause margins to narrow, too. AusPost has had to pay third parties to make deliveries because it doesn't have enough staff to handle the surge. Its fleet of delivery motor scooters looks increasingly obsolete, too, in an era when vans are needed to cope with growing volumes of bulky packages.

After a flurry of interest in privatization earlier this decade, that talk has long since died down. The more likely outcome would be less frequent, costlier letter deliveries so that core business is finally able to stand on its own feet.

Who Is Keith Raniere of ‘The Vow’ – Where Is He Now? – Men’s Health

Over the next nine weeks, and as NXIVM founder and convicted felon Keith Raniere awaits sentencing for charges of sex trafficking and conspiracy, HBO will air its recent documentary, The Vow, which examines the founding of NXIVM as well as Raniere's own criminal behavior.

The documentary features interviews with former NXIVM members, most notably Mark Vicente and Sarah Edmondson, who discuss their membership to NXIVM and relationship with Raniere. The documentary's existence has already provoked current NXIVM members, many of who have called for other members to petition HBO to remove their likenesses from the documentary.

Though the activities of Raniere and the NXIVM organization are by now widely known, The Vow will provide viewers with additional footage from inside the organization's seminars and will feature more damning interviews.

In the documentary's first episode, we're clued into the early cult of personality, which quickly developed around Raniere, based on claims of aberrational I.Q. scores and musical and athletic abilities. Raniere wasn't merely a leader, members believed, but a genius and visionary. They referred to him, just as he asked, as "Vanguard."

Here's what lay behind Vanguard's veneer.

Raniere grew up in upstate New York in the 1960s and 70s. His former partner, Barbara Bouchey, later told CBC that Raniere said he first became enlightened at age 13. Bouchey described manipulative behavior even then, with Raniere taking calls from multiple girls, telling each that he loved her. (Bouchey learned this through Raniere's mother.)

Even as he got older, Raniere apparently continued relations with this age group. When he was 24, Raniere had a sexual relationship with at least one 15-year-old girl.

In his 20s, Raniere began developing a personal ethos modeled, in part, on Ayn Rand's objectivismmost notably, the idea that individuals ought to aggressively pursue personal goals.

Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, Raniere worked in marketing and founded his own company, which would later be shut down after a civil suit alleged the company to be a pyramid scheme.

In 1998, Raniere created the Executive Success Program (ESP), a motivational group targeting business leaders and rich professionals, offering something of that Ayn Rand-inspired egoism. Five-day lectures could run upwards to $10,000. Word of mouth helped recruit more than 3,000 people to the program over the next five years.

In a 2003 cover story, Forbes wrote that Raniere had cashed in on the "high-profit fad of executive coaching." The story also noted troubling behavior, as reported by families of ESP members (the organization was by then called NXIVM). These behaviors included alleged psychological manipulation and separation of members from their own families.

NXIVM expanded worldwide. Members then began observing some of Raniere's darker, misogynistic practices. Witnesses at Raniere's trial said he began having sexual relationships with NXIVM members. The women were told that they could only have sex with Raniere, who also ordered women to starve themselves and, according to testimony, made women snort like pigs when eating.

In 2015 Rainere created a special division of NXVIM called "D.O.S.," the acronym based on a Latin phrase. It's rough translation: "Lord/Master of the Obedient Female Companions."

During Raniere's trial, various women testified how they were lured into NXIVM's D.O.S. They said they had been told it was a women's empowerment sorority and that it required "collateral" of them, including explicit photos and information on their families, which could be used to damage their reputations. These women were later branded in ceremonies with a cauterized pen. Their brand: Raniere's name.

According to testimony, Raniere had sexual relationships with more than 20 women of the NXIVM organization, multiple who became impregnated and required abortions. One girl was as young as 15.

Raniere then began recruiting "first-line masters," women who, according to witnesses, would help procure women for D.O.S. One notable first-line master was Allison Mack, an actor known for her role in the TV show Smallville. (Mack would plead guilty to federal charges before trial; Raniere would plead not guilty.)

In 2017, the Justice Department launched an investigation into NXIVM.

In March 2018, Raniere was arrested at a Mexican resort and brought back to the United States to face federal charges. Raniere would ultimately be charged with racketeering, forced labor conspiracy, sex trafficking, and human trafficking.

In June 2019, Raniere was found guilty of all charges.

After the trial, U.S. Attorney Richard Donoghue said the trial "revealed that Raniere, who portrayed himself as a savant and a genius, was in fact, a master manipulator, a con man and the crime boss of a cult-like organization involved in sex trafficking, child pornography, extortion, compelled abortions, branding, degradation and humiliation."

Raniere has since been awaiting sentencing in New York. As of earlier this year, Raniere was being held in a federal jail in Brooklyn, with his sentencing pushed back from March due to COVID-19.

Raniere is now scheduled to be sentenced on October 27. He faces a potential life imprisonment.
