Holly Holm Defends Her Many Chances to Earn a UFC Title: ‘There’s a Reason’ – Sportscasting

Even if the UFC holds events for another 50 years, few moments will compare to Holly Holms head-kick KO of Ronda Rousey. Many fans believed Rousey would be the GOAT. But the loss to Holm and a followup loss to Amanda Nunes sent Rousey packing for WWE. Since her incredible upset win, Holm has managed only a 3-5 record in the UFC.

Although her losses were against some of the UFCs greatest, (Nunes, Cris Cyborg, Valentina Shevchenko, and Germaine de Randamie) a losing record doesnt seem to justify the three title shots Holm has received since losing the belt. Does she agree? Not so much.

Womens MMA is still a new sport, especially in the UFC. Holms win over Rousey is an all-time great moment. And Holm continued to be a great force for the sport. Shes taken fights that dont suit her, along with short-notice fights against heavily-favored opponents. Holm is loyal to the UFC brand and many of the womens divisions are still filling out.

Without top-level contenders, it makes sense for Holm to step in and create exciting fights in the meantime. It may seem like shes receiving title fights she doesnt deserve. But much of todays WMMA popularity is built on Holms career and shes not exactly pushing more deserving fighters aside.

Despite her up-and-down record, the UFC rankings currently list Holm at No. 2 among Womens Bantamweight fighters and No. 8 among all women. Her losses have been to the pound for pound No. 1, No. 3, and No. 9 fighters (along with Cyborg and Miesha Tate, who no longer compete in the UFC).

If theres an argument that Holm simply doesnt have it anymore, additional evidence is necessary. After retirement rumors swirled in mid-2019, Holm returned to the cage and won a unanimous decision over former title challenger Raquel Pennington. This set her up for another title fight in the near future.

Prior to facing Holm, Rousey felt the confidence that years of adoration from fans and critics create. Everybody tries to come at me in different ways, Rousey said, and I think their approach is going to be the most strategic and well-thought-out, but no amount of strategy can beat me, and Im going to show them that.

But things turned around quickly in the Octagon as Holm dominated the first round. Moving into the second, commentators wondered if Rousey would go to a decision for the first time in her career. A minute into round two, Holm landed a head kick that won her the belt. She dominated sports headlines for the next week.

RELATED: Ronda Rousey Absolutely Torched WWE Fans in Brutal New Interview

Since beating Rousey, Holm immediately lost the belt to Tate and managed a total record of three wins, five losses. But no amount of losses diminishes the shock that Holm sent throughout the MMA world when she knocked out Rousey. And some of that shock has certainly played into her title shots.

But that isnt necessarily a bad thing. Holm was the first fighter, man or woman, to win world championships in both boxing and MMA. Her impact will likely be felt for the entire future of womens MMA. Shes approaching 40 years old, but the shallow womens divisions she fights in have plenty of space.

Holms dominance in the boxing ring and strong point-fighting style in the Octagon have kept her largely injury-free throughout her career. Even if she never wins another fight, Holm has contributed a legendary story to MMA history and given boxers the blueprint to succeed.

Augusts Filmmaker of the Month: Park Chan-wook – The Spool

Would there be a Parasite or at least, a Parasite that won Best Picture at the 2020 Academy Awards and swept the American box office without Oldboy? Its a presumptuous question, to be sure, but one worth asking, especially as global audiences grow more accustomed to (and enamored of) the intricacies and tone-defying appeal of South Korean cinema. While Bong Joon-ho is arguably the countrys most well-known and celebrated director today, another man must at least share credit with Director Bong for popularizing South Korean cinema in the West Park Chan-wook.

Much of what we associate with South Korean cinema can be traced back to the American audiences embrace of both Bong and Parks works the dark humor, the intricate lacing of absurdism with abject violence, the heavy hand of sociopolitical commentary undergirding every plot point and sumptuously-framed image. Contemporaries in the early 21st-century Korean cinema scene, both Bong and Park had huge crossover hits championed by folks like previous Filmmaker of the Month recipients Quentin Tarantino and Spike Lee. But before Bong could achieve cult status in America with his 2005 monster movie The Host, its arguably Parks Vengeance Trilogy Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, and Lady Vengeance that put South Korea on the map for international audiences.

Despite their grindhouse notoriety, especially in the earlier parts of Parks career, his films are shockingly meditative, often musing on subjects as grisly as revenge, fate, and the specter of violence. He doesnt shy away from that violence, either: Oldboy is arguably his blood-soaked magnum opus, lingering on sliced-off tongues or claw hammers to the head with exploitation-movie levels of glee. And yet, with his painterly compositions and intriguing command of tone, even the bloodiest of his works feel like prayers massacres as pleas for humanity from people driven to the edges of their will. There are plenty of squib-heavy Korean action movies out there, but Parks thrillers feel more intriguingly messy than that. Images like Oldboys protagonist, Oh Dae-su, chomping greedily on a live octopus only hammer home (eh?) the notion that Parks protagonists all yearn for some kind of visceral connection to life. For the vampires of Thirst and the young sociopath at the center of Stoker, this disconnect from humanity is even more visible.

Its not all blood and guts, though; there are surreal rom-coms like Im a Cyborg But Thats OK, lush, queer period romantic thrillers (The Handmaiden), English-language debuts filled with southern Gothic energy (Stoker), and more, all contributing to Parks consistent work to live up to, and sometimes defy, his reputation. Over the course of the month, well explore the lions share of Parks ten films (and one television series) to date, and try to crack the code on the surprising connections between the tenderness and terror of a Park Chan-wook film.

The Terminator Is a Subtly Subversive Slasher – The Escapist

The Terminator is often discussed in terms of its contributions to specifically science fiction cinema. Prolific science fiction author Harlan Ellison earned an acknowledgement in the closing credits by filing a lawsuit alleging that the film stole various ideas from his television script Soldier for The Outer Limits, even though writer and director James Cameron would later dismiss Ellisons case as a nuisance suit. The Terminator contains elements associated with science fiction: time travel, cyborgs, post-apocalyptic warfare.

However, despite these trappings, The Terminator feels much more like a horror movie than a conventional science fiction adventure. Indeed, even beyond the shoestring budget and technical limitations imposed on the production, The Terminator stands apart in Camerons filmography. It is arguably closer in tone to the original Alien than Camerons sequel Aliens, using recognizable science fiction storytelling devices to frame an archetypal horror narrative.

It makes sense that The Terminator should feel like a horror. Cameron conceived of the film while in Rome working on his directorial debut, Piranha II: The Spawning. Cameron concedes the nightmare may have been prompted by a fever, but added, I think also the idea that because I was in a foreign city by myself and I felt very dissociated from humanity in general, it was very easy to project myself into these two characters from the future who were out of sync, out of time, out of place.

This nightmarish quality bleeds through into the film. The Terminator presents Los Angeles as a haunted landscape, particularly at night. While Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn) arrives in the city, it is a labyrinth of dark alleyways lit by the neon strobe of police lights. The Terminator repeatedly suggests that Reese has swapped one nightmare for another, paralleling the homeless inhabitants of 1984 Los Angeles scavenging for food with the survivors foraging in the ruins of the apocalyptic future.

The presentation of Los Angeles in The Terminator is in step with the broader portrayals of the American city as a sprawling wasteland in contemporary films like RoboCop or even After Hours. The Terminator has been described as basically Walter Hills best film, recalling the urban nightmares of films like The Warriors or Streets of Fire. In particular, the use of washed out blues and greens in the nighttime scenes evokes a feeling of chronic insomnia, a blurring of dream and reality.

As played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Terminator itself might have a pseudo-rational explanation, but it is also just a literal distillation of the classic slasher villain. Like Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees, characters driving the popular horror franchises of the decade, the Terminator is a relentless and unstoppable killing machine. Cameron emphasizes this with repeated shots of the machine getting knocked down, seemingly defeated, only to twitch back to life to continue the pace.

Cameron is not shy about acknowledging this influence. My contemporaries were all doing slasher-horror movies, Cameron has explained. John Carpenter was the guy I idolized the most. He made Halloween for $30,000 or something. That was everyones break-in dream, to do a stylish horror movie. It was a very slasher film type image. And it really was the launching pad for the story. Carpenters influence looms large over the film, especially Halloween and Assault on Precinct 13.

This is most obvious in an early sequence in which the Terminator murders Ginger (Bess Motta) and her boyfriend Matt (Rick Rossovich). Ginger and Matt have just had sex, which makes them prime targets in a horror movie. Ginger makes a sandwich, leaving Matt lying in bed in the dark room. The Terminator quietly enters and brutally murders Matt as Ginger listens to her headphones in another room. Ginger is oblivious to her boyfriends death until his head is smashed through a wall.

However, what is particularly interesting about The Terminator is how it uses these horror movie tropes in interesting ways. Even on his second film, Cameron was cognizant of what these devices could mean. Although Schwarzenegger has joked that Cameron declined to O.J. Simpson as the Terminator because Simpson was not believable for a killing machine, Cameron has also candidly admitted, I wasnt interested in an African-American man chasing around a white girl with a knife.

It is worth considering Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), the target of the time-traveling assassination cyborg. Sarah is introduced in a manner similar to the young women who tended to headline these sorts of horror movies, like Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) in Halloween or Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp) in A Nightmare on Elm Street. While the Terminator and Reese navigate a gritty urban nightmare, Sarah is introduced riding a pink scooter against a clear blue sky.

In some ways, Sarah could be seen as an embodiment of the classic horror movie final girl. She is young, with 27-year-old Hamilton playing an 18- (or 19-) year-old character. She is wholesome, working a low-paying job at a diner to make ends meet. She is also presented as somewhat more chaste than Ginger. While Ginger spends the night at home with Matt, Sarah is getting stood up on a date. (The voice on the answering machine is Cameron himself, Hamiltons future husband.)

Cameron doesnt play all the classic horror movie tropes straight. Instead, he actively and pointedly subverts some of the core elements of the slasher movie template. The sexual politics of horror movies are undoubtedly complicated, with many critics reading the slasher genre as inherently misogynistic while others argue that it has embraced a progressive feminism over time. Still, however one reads the genre, there is a strong puritanical undertone to its attitudes towards sex.

In horror movies, female characters are often punished for having sex. In the self-aware horror movie Scream, film buff Randy (Jamie Kennedy) explains, You can never have sex. When the audience boos, he doubles down, Sex equals death, okay? In the equally self-aware Cabin in the Woods, the moral logic of horror movies is framed in terms of transgression. Gary (Richard Jenkins) clarifies, If they dont transgress, they cant be punished.

In many horror films, for many female characters, sex itself is treated as a transgression worthy of punishment. The final girl in these films is often defined by her abstinence, in contrast to the characters around her. Good girls dont die, but loose ones do, summarizes Adam Rockoff. To simplify it further, the girls who refrain from having sex survive(;) the ones who indulge in their passions die. This allows the audience of such films to have their cake and eat it: to be titillated by the sexual content of these slasher films, but to be reassured that morality is ultimately upheld.

There are legitimate criticisms to be made of the sexual politics of Camerons films. His films lean heavily on the importance of his female characters as mothers. In Dark Fate, Sarah herself mounts a fair retroactive criticism of the original Terminator. When Dani (Natalia Reyes) freaks out about being targeted by killer robots from the future, Sarah sarcastically sighs, Youre not the threat. Its your womb. While the original Alien offered a genuinely radical portrayal of its protagonist Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), Cameron constructs a surrogate nuclear family for her in Aliens.

However, in the context of The Terminator and the larger slasher genre, this emphasis on motherhood becomes slyly subversive. The Terminator is built around Sarahs sexual agency. In the conventional slasher movie, the heroine dies if she has sex. In The Terminator, humanity itself dies if Sarah doesnt have sex. When Reese and Sarah have sex in the third act of The Terminator, shortly before the Terminators final attack, it is Reese who becomes expendable and is brutally murdered.

The result is to make The Terminator a subtly subversive slasher movie, albeit a movie that is rarely discussed in those terms. Its a movie that exemplifies much of the appeal of low-budget horror filmmaking, but it also offers a sophisticated twist on the classic template. Perhaps The Terminator saw the future in more ways than it initially appeared.

Nowadays, consumers are more aware of functional food and dietary supplements and the potential role of these products in ensuring good health. With this, probiotics are becoming an increasingly popular as a functional food because of their health benefits such as improvement of intestinal health, amelioration of symptoms of lactose intolerance, enhancement of the immune response, reduction of serum cholesterol, cancer prevention, and reduction of the risk of various other diseases. Moreover, the rising awareness activities by companies, such as Yakult, continue to drive the consumer awareness about probiotic products that will in turn fuel the growth of the probiotics market. Also, many countries are taking initiatives to promote the health benefits of probiotics. For instance, to provide the consumers with a better understanding of the health benefits of probiotics, the Nutrition Society of Malaysia (NSM) has Initiated the Probiotics Education Programme (PEP). Hence, the growing awareness about health benefits of probiotics among consumers and various initiatives taken by developing countries helps to spur the demand for probiotics.

Impact of COVID-19 on the Probiotics Market

The COVID-19 crisis has impacted the entire value chain of the probiotics industry mainly due to strict lockdown in some regions and several concerns such as truck shortages, reduced deliveries, and employees contracting COVID-19. In addition, truncated air freight capacity, port congestion, roadblocks, and logistic disruptions in Southeast Asia are expected to escalate as stricter measures are implemented by the governments. All these factors somehow restricted the demand for probiotics. For instance, Yakult company has reported that the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted its business in China as they had experienced a drop in sales in the first two months of the year 2020. However, the use of probiotics is increasing gradually in the recent months due to the fact that corona virus directly affects the human's immune system and use of probiotics have positive effects on the immune responses. For example, Dupont reported the growth in its Nutrition & Biosciences segment in its 2020 first quarter result, with probiotics section seeing the strongest growth period to date. Also, in April 2020, Probi reported that its probiotic sales had been bolstered, noting a clear increase in interest in its immunity products.

The global probiotics market study presents historical market data in terms of value (2018 and 2019), estimated current data (2020), and forecasts for 2027. The market is segmented on the basis of strain, product type, form, sales channel, end-user, and geography. The study also evaluates industry competitors and analyses the market at a country level.

Based on strain, the bacteria strain segment is estimated to command the largest share of the overall probiotics market in 2020. The large share of this segment is mainly attributed to the factors such as growing use of bacteria strain in a wide variety of commercial dairy products including sour and fresh milk, yogurt, and cheese, among others. In addition, the growing gastrointestinal and extraintestinal disorders (including prevention and alleviation symptoms of traveler's diarrhea and antibiotic-associated diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, lactose intolerance, and irritable bowel syndrome); increasing popularity among health-conscious consumers around the world; and rising preference for nutrient-rich food products is expected to boost the demand for bacterial strain probiotics. However, the yeast strain product segment is expected to grow with the fastest CAGR during the forecast period. The fast growth of this segment is mainly attributed to the increasing demand for yeast strain-based medicines due to proven positive results for reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as diarrhea & bowel diseases related to antibiotic use.

Based on product type, the probiotic functional food & beverages segment is estimated to command the largest share of the overall probiotics market in 2020. The large share of this market is mainly attributed to the factors such as growing consumer interest for functional food, particularly probiotics that can support digestive health; rising health and wellness trends; and growing application of probiotics in yogurt, which is the most popular source of probiotics. However, the probiotic medical & dietary supplements segmentis expected to grow with the fastest CAGR during the forecast period. The fast growth of this segment is primarily attributed to the rapid urbanization, increasing disease conditions, and growing awareness regarding the health benefits of good nutrients among consumers. Further, energy, weight management, immunity, diabetes control, cardiovascular diseases, gastrointestinal health, and general health are some of the major applications of probiotic dietary supplements which are driving the market growth.

Based on form, the liquid form segment is estimated to command the largest share of the overall probiotics market in 2020. The large share of this segment is mainly attributed to the growing use of liquid probiotics due to variations in the form of liquid supplements and probiotic-enriched drinks. Also, liquid probiotics are convenient and easy to consume for children and elderly who dislike swallowing pills and thus drives the growth of this segment. However, most probiotics need to be refrigerated, especially the juices and probiotics drinks, which somehow restricts the demand for liquid form probiotics. However, the dry form segment is expected to grow at the fastest rate, owing to the benefits such as better handling & transport, ease of use, lower expenses, ability to avoid costly formulation mistakes, and enhancement in shelf life of ingredients.

Quick Buy Probiotics Market Research Report:https://www.meticulousresearch.com/buy_now.php?pformat=417&vformat=1237

Based on sales channel, the offline sales segment is estimated to command the largest share of the overall probiotics market in 2020. The large share of this segment is mainly attributed to the increasing per capita disposable income, rising healthy eating habits, and growing urban population. In addition, the rise in the number of pharmacies and supermarkets and growing probiotics supplement industry in the U.S. and across the world further supports the growth of this segment. However, the online sales segment is expected to grow with the fastest CAGR during the forecast period. The fast growth of this segment is primarily attributed to the growing consumer spending on probiotic products through online distribution channels, growing smartphone and internet penetration, and e-commerce expansion by major players in the developing countries. For instance, South Korean probiotic brand, Youguth, is expanding its e-commerce reach in Singapore. Further, Amazon, online pharmacies, and local online stores are mainly expected to drive the growth of this segment.

Based on end-user, the human segment is estimated to command the largest share of the overall probiotics market in 2020. The large share of this market is mainly attributed to the major factors such as the growing use of probiotics to treat digestive tract issues in humans, growing proportion of elderly people, and high demand for nutritional products among consumers. However, the animal segment is expected to grow with the fastest CAGR during the forecast period.

Geographically, Asia-Pacific region is estimated to command the largest share of the global probiotics market in 2020. The large share and the fast growth of this market is mainly attributed to the factors such as increased consumer awareness regarding the relationship between their digestive health & immunity and overall wellness; growing diabetic and overweight people in Asia-Pacific; and rising innovations in probiotic formulations. In addition, the increasing trend across the Asia-Pacific region for non-dairy probiotic food (e.g. cereal based, fruit and vegetable juices) and presence of number of companies in the digestive health products category offers lucrative growth opportunities for the key players operating in this market.

Some of the key players operating in the global probiotics market are Probi AB (Sweden), BioGaia AB (Sweden), Nestle S.A. (Switzerland), Chr. Hasen Holding A/S (Denmark), Danone S.A. (France), Yakult Honsha Co., Ltd. (Japan), Lallemand Inc. (Canada), Lifeway Foods Inc. (U.S.), Dupont de Nemours, Inc. (U.S.), Kerry Group plc (Ireland), Archer Daniels Midland Co. With so many different supplements on the market, picking the right product can be challenging.

Be sure to buy from a reputable manufacturer and look for supplements that have undergone third-party testing and are certified by organizations like USP or NSF International.

Its also important to consider the type of calcium in your supplement and whether it contains calcium carbonate or calcium citrate, which are the two most common forms.

Calcium carbonate is more widely available, cheaper, and contains a higher amount of calcium than other compounds. However, it has been associated with symptoms like gas and bloating (3, 15).

Calcium citrate, on the other hand, is slightly more expensive but also more easily absorbed in the body (5, 15).

People who have low stomach acid or are taking proton pump inhibitors should choose calcium citrate, as it can be absorbed without the help of stomach acid (16).

Be sure to check the ingredient label carefully, as many products contain high amounts of fillers, additives, artificial sweeteners, and preservatives.

Many products also contain added ingredients like vitamin D, which can help optimize the absorption of calcium (4).

Calcium requirements range from 1,000-1,200 mg daily for most adults depending on age and sex, and it can come from a combination of food sources and supplements (17).

For most people, supplements providing 200500 mg of calcium are often enough to help fill any gaps in their diet (18).

However, those who are at risk of osteoporosis or unable to meet their calcium needs due to food allergies or dietary restrictions may require a higher dose (9).

Furthermore, those with certain medical conditions, such as hypoparathyroidism a condition characterized by low production of parathyroid hormone, may also need a higher dose supplement (19).

Be sure to talk to your doctor before using a high dose calcium supplement, and remember to always split supplementation into several smaller doses of less than 500 mg to maximize absorption (17).

Finally, its important to only use a supplement as directed and talk to a healthcare professional before starting to supplement, especially if you have any underlying conditions or are taking medications.

Calcium is an important mineral that plays a central role in bone health.

There are many calcium supplements on the market, each of which varies based on the type of calcium, dosage, and ingredients it contains.

The good vitamin guide: What should you take and when for a well-balanced diet? – Mirror Online

Many medical experts believe we are simply wasting money on health supplements.

The general consensus is we can get all the vitamins and minerals we need from a well-balanced diet.

And theres no discernible evidence taking those pills and potions will reduce your risk of conditions like heart disease or help you live longer.

The evidence for the actual health benefits is rather limited, says Leeds GP Dr Gary Bartlett, echoing the thoughts of so many of his colleagues.

Eating fruit, vegetables, carbohydrates and whole grains with the correct amount of protein will be way more beneficial in maintaining good health over taking a supplement.

But statistics show that, in the real world, for many reasons, this is not always the case.

Diet should always come first, says Dr Sarah Brewer, GP, nutritionist and medical director of Healthspan.

But the National Diet and Nutrition Surveys (NDNS) consistently show significant numbers of the population do not get all the vitamins and minerals they need from their food.

This could be because of poor diet choices, such as relying on processed foods, or other factors like avoiding certain food groups because you simply dont like them or for ethical reasons.

Then there are those on a restrictive weight loss plan; older people whose nutrient absorption is less efficient and menstruating girls at risk of low iron levels.

Sometimes, despite our best efforts, our diet fails to give us all we need, suggests Rob Hobson, nutritionist and author.

Vegans, for instance, are likely to benefit from taking a vitamin B12 supplement as this nutrient isnt found in many plant foods, he says.

And, if youre not getting your five- a-day or eating oily fish, then a daily multivitamin and mineral should be considered.

Quality is key, explains Dr Brewer. Look for products made to a pharmaceutical standard known as Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).

This tests products for purity and consistency of dose at every stage of manufacture and is usually mentioned as a quality point on manufacturers About Us web page.

You can also try searching on the internet for the name of your chosen brand plus the term GMP.

And be choosy where you buy them. Vitamin and mineral supplements sold in high street pharmacies or from trusted online retailers offer quality and value for money, says Dr Brewer.

You get what you pay for. Check labels to compare levels of ingredients between brands and that you are buying a quality product.

Whether you take a tablet, capsule, a liquid, gummies or spray is really down to personal choice, says Dr Brewer. Although, in general, a tablet will provide a wider range of vitamins and minerals than a gummy or spray.

Dr Brewer says: It is important to check with a pharmacist or doctor if you have a medical condition or if you are taking any prescribed or over-the-counter drugs.

Also check before taking any supplements if you are pregnant, or planning to be, or if breast-feeding.

"The risk of side-effects is very low as long as you do not exceed the manufacturer's recommended daily intake of any supplement.

"There is a wide safety margin between what most supplements deliver and what would be required to cause side-effects or toxic reactions," Dr Brewer explains.

"If taking a multivitamin, be careful about taking additional supplements that include fat soluble vitamins A, D, E and K as these can be stored in the body and accumulate to toxic levels when intakes are too high."

And because all minerals can be toxic in excess, dont exceed manufacturers recommended doses or mix and match supplements that contain minerals. Those most likely to cause problems in excess are iron, selenium, magnesium and zinc.

Most vitamin and mineral supplements are best taken immedi- ately after food and with water to avoid nausea or indigestion (even a few bites of food or a glass of orange juice will do).

Dont wash them down with coffee or tea, which can interfere with absorption of minerals such as iron and zinc.

Fat soluble substances (e.g. co-enzyme Q10, evening primrose oil, fish oils, vitamin E) are best taken with food containing some fat, such as milk. If taking a fish oil that produces fishy burps, try emulsifying the oil by shaking your dose with a little milk to increase absorption and reduce after-taste.

One-a-day supplements are best taken after your evening meal because repair processes and mineral movements in your body are greatest at night when growth hormone is secreted.

When taking two or more tablets/capsules of the same prepa- ration daily, spreading them over the day maximises absorption and evens out blood levels.

Herbal products can vary in quality, warns Dr Chris Etheridge, chair of the British Herbal Medicine Association.

Recent research revealed 30-40% of milk thistle and echinacea herbal and food supplements were sub- standard. Some appeared not to contain the listed herb.

However, Traditional Herbal Registration (THR) medicines were 100% accurate in containing the right herb in the correct amount. Always look for herbal medicines that display THR on their pack.

Wet pattern continues as two weather systems bring rain to over 25 states – WGRZ.com

From a seasonal low pressure system to Isaias, both will bring rain to the eastern half of the country this week.

BUFFALO, N.Y. Between tropical system Isaias and a continental low pressure system, lots of rain will be traversing the eastern half of the United States early this week.

For Buffalo specifically, isolated showers and storms Sunday were by produced the the low pressure system Sunday. The most rain fell along the shores of Lake Erie and Ontario, around a quarter to half an inch. Farther inland, only a few tenths fell with the fast paced showers in the Genesee Valley and Southern Tier.

A Lakeshore Flood Advisory is in effect until 2 a.m. for Erie and Chautauqua counties. With heavy rainfall and a strong breeze, isolated flooding is possible along the eastern shores of Lake Erie overnight.

A Beach Hazards Statement is also in effect until 6 a.m. Monday for Niagara and Orleans counties. Strong currents are possible along the southern shores of Lake Ontario with the strong, southwesterly breeze.

Isaias was downgraded Saturday from a category one hurricane to tropical storm. The tropical system weakened as it moved over the Bahamas and will stay at tropical storm strength through Wednesday.

The eastern half of the Florida peninsula could face tropical storm force winds, heavy rainfall and a storm surge of 2 to 4 feet along the shoreline as Isaias skirts the region Sunday and Monday.

The only real impact Western New Yorkers could see from Isaias is cloud cover and a few showers Tuesday But for the East Coast, Isaias could bring tropical storm force winds and high seas early in the week.

Sunday night, Tropical Storm Watches were issued from the coast of Virginia to Long Island ahead of the storm.

Rare, million-dollar copies of a letter written by Christopher Columbus replaced with fakes – 60 Minutes – CBS News

In 1492, Christopher Columbus, of course, sailed the ocean blue. And on his journey home, he wrote a letter to his patrons, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, describing his discovery of the new world, and in effect, asking for more money to make another trip. Columbus' voyage marked one of the great plot points in history. Upon his return, his letter was printed and distributed throughout Europe, making for blockbuster news. Columbus' original handwritten letter, penned on the high seas, no longer exists, but some of the printed copies do. As we first reported last year, most are housed in prestigious libraries, and for centuries, that's where they've remained. That is, until about 10 years ago, when authorities discovered some of these treasures had been stolen and replaced with forgeries. So began a modern kind of trans-Atlantic quest, as investigators in the U.S. and Europe worked to recover Columbus' missing missives and solve this most unusual international mystery.

If there is one library in the world you'd think would be impervious to theft, this would be it. The Vatican library in rome houses a vast and unrivaled collection of historic treasures. It is the pope's library, home to manuscripts going back nearly 2000 years. The library is closed to the public, it's a place for scholars only. But Ambrogio Piazzoni, the vice prefect, invited us inside.

It was here in 2011 that Vatican officials first discovered that one of their prized items, a Columbus letter, had somehow been stolen and replaced with a fake.

Jon Wertheim: How do you think this happened?

Ambrogio Piazzoni (Translation): Look I do not know. I have no idea how and when it may have happened. Certainly it was an operation carried out as a proper theft. But I do not know when or how.

He is in good company. At the center of this mystery: this eight-page letter, written at sea by Christopher Columbus, more than 500 years ago. In it, he describes his first impressions of the new world. A wonderland, he writes, filled with rivers, gold and timid natives.

When Columbus' letter arrived at the royal court in Spain in 1493, it was promptly sent to Rome, where it was translated into Latin and printed, spreading the news of his extraordinary expedition.

Jon Wertheim: So this was big news? Columbus makes this voyage and suddenly, this is being disseminated?

Jay Dillon: This is some of the biggest news ever

Jay Dillon is a rare book dealer in New Jersey. He ranks the Columbus letter as one of the most important documents ever printed.

Jay Dillon: This was one of the first bestsellers. It is probably the first contemporary account of anything to be published across Europe.Today, only about 30 copies of this Columbus letter still exist.

Jay Dillon: Each one is now worth something in the low 7 figures

Jon Wertheim: More than a million dollars?

Jay Dillon: More than a million but probably less than $4 or $5 million

It was while researching Columbus letters on his home computer, back in 2011, that Jay Dillon first noticed something amiss. The National Library of Catalonia in Barcelona had posted photos of their Columbus letter online. What struck Dillon as odd: it looked exactly like a Columbus letter that he had seen for sale a year earlier, right down to the same smudge marks in the margins.

Jon Wertheim: And you're telling yourself what at this point?

Jay Dillon: I'm telling myself that one of them has to be a forgery.

Jon Wertheim: Why is that?

Jay Dillon: Because you cant have two books with the same random brown spots in the margins. It's just impossible.

Jon Wertheim: What confirmed your suspicions were these matching marks from these texts that were 500 years old?

Jay Dillon: That's right. Exactly

Jon Wertheim: That would not happen.

Jay Dillon: That cannot happen.

Jay suspected the library's letter had been stolen and put up for sale, which meant whatever was currently in their collection was a fake.

Jay Dillon: It was so remarkable, I couldn't believe it at first. And I made it my business from that moment on to look at every original I could.

And so it was that Jay Dillon became an unlikely detective. Following his instincts, he visited libraries in Rome and Florence and took a look at their Columbus letters.

Jay Dillon: To my utter astonishment, a Columbus letter in the Vatican library was a forgery. And then I went to the Biblioteca Riccardiana in Florence and damned if the same thing doesn't happen again. Their Columbus letter is a fake too.

Afraid that notifying the libraries might alert the culprit, he decided instead to take his information to the Department of Justice.

Mark Olexa: It seemed like it was almost out of a Hollywood movie script.

Homeland Security special agent Mark Olexa led the investigation, along with assistant U.S. attorney for the District of Delaware, Jamie McCall.

Jamie McCall: Similar reaction. I thought it was a John Grisham novel. That we had some people in Europe stealing these treasures of the world and replacing them with high quality forgeries.

Jon Wertheim: You say Hollywood script, you say John Grisham. Were you skeptical?

Jamie McCall: Of course we have to confirm what our tipster was providing us

They turned to Paul Needham, one of the world's foremost experts on 15th century printing. He runs the Scheide Library at Princeton University, home to one of the most valuable private collections of books on earth. And now it was Needham's turn to travel to Europe to examine the letters. In each case, he determined the originals had indeed been removed and replaced with photographic facsimiles printed on centuries-old paper.

Paul Needham: The Columbus letter being a highly collected book it's just the perfect combination. Both very small and very valuable their value per leaf of paper is higher than for any other printed book.

Jon Wertheim: You're saying this is the perfect item to forge.

Paul Needham: It's the perfect item to forge.

Jon Wertheim: And there's a market for it?

Paul Needham: There's always been a market for it

This turned into a trans-Atlantic collaboration. A legacy, you might say, of Christopher Columbus.

Mark Olexa: We engaged quickly with Carabinieri.

Enter Giovanni Prisco, captain of the Carabinieri Police's Cultural Heritage Squad, based in Rome. His unit investigates property theft from private homes, churches and libraries. In Italy, it is a crime market second only to that of illegal drug and weapon sales.

Jon Wertheim: We are in this country with so many artifacts, with so many churches you must be very busy.

Giovanni Prisco: Yes we are very, very busy, of course.

One of the most valuable art collections in Europe isn't housed in a museum visited by millions of tourists, but in this warehouse in the back of his police station. It's basically an evidence locker for stolen artifacts.

Jon Wertheim: This is all art that you've seizedGiovanni Prisco: Yes, there are some archaeological items some fake and contemporary arts, and some antiques, paintings, like--

Jon Wertheim: What is this?

Giovanni Prisco: Yes, like that one. This is a Caravaggio, it's coming from school of Caravaggio.

Jon Wertheim: Caravaggio.

Giovanni Prisco: Yes, and it is a paint stolen at the end of 1990 and was from a private house. It was discovered in the north of Italy.

Jon Wertheim:What does a Caravaggio go for these days?

Giovanni Prisco: It is millions of dollars of course.

Jon Wertheim: Millions of dollars.

Giovanni Prisco: Yes, it's a great paint, it's quite big and it's coming from Caravaggio's hands.

But wait there's more: amphoras, sculptures and dozens of masterpieces. An original Tiepolo. And this painting by Peter Paul Reubens.

Jon Wertheim: Oh wow.

Giovanni Prisco: It's a Madonna.

Jon Wertheim: This is a Rubens.

Giovanni Prisco: Yes, it's a real Rubens. It's not a fake.

Captain Prisco says one of their biggest challenges these days is protecting Italy's rare books. The country has more than 18,000 libraries.

Jon Wertheim: Why is it so difficult to protect books from theft?

Giovanni Prisco: because books, some of them are really small and it's not difficult to put under your arm or in your jacket.

While book thefts are often committed by insiders, in the case of the Columbus letters, Assistant U.S. Attorney Jamie McCall suspects there may have been more than one person involved.

Jamie McCall: It requires access. It requires the ability to create high quality forgeries. And then the ability to know where and how to sell these Columbus letters on the private market.

Jon Wertheim: One name that keeps coming up is Massimo De Caro. Familiar name to you guys?

Jamie McCall: Yes, Massimo De Caro was prosecuted by the Italian authorities for pilfering thousands of rare books and he was involved in the sale of at least one of the Columbus letters at issue.

Jon Wertheim: This was someone who's been involved in these kind of crimes before?

Jamie McCall: Yes, correct.

Jon Wertheim: Fair to characterize him as a person of interest?

Jamie McCall: He is a subject in the investigation.

The Columbus letters themselves may be hard to track down, but this subject in the investigation is not exactly in hiding. Massimo De Caro, a notorious Italian book thief, just finished serving a seven-year sentence for stealing thousands of ancient books and manuscripts from Italian libraries and selling them overseas. To our surprise, he agreed to meet with us at his home in Orvieto, a hill town an hour's drive north of Rome. To say that he professes his innocence would be an act of considerable understatement.

Jon Wertheim: The police say you are a subject in this investigation. Does that concern you?

Massimo De Caro: You know, first of all, the police in Italy, regarding books are the worst, ok? They even don't know how is made one book. I love Italy too much to say which level they are, ok?

Jon Wertheim: But doesn't bother you that you are a person of interest?

Massimo De Caro: No, no, I mean, I would like to help but--

Jon Wertheim: You want to help?

Massimo De Caro: Yes I would like to help. If I work on it, I'm sure I can solve.

Jon Wertheim: You think you're smarter than the police.

Massimo De Caro: Let's say that I am more expert than them.

Jon Wertheim: In this field.

Massimo De Caro: In this field, yes.

De Caro is not just a convicted thief, he's also an accomplished forger. He spent years making a fake Galileo book, which fooled the experts and sold for almost a half million dollars. He showed us another Galileo reproduction he made.

Massimo De Caro: you can see the quality of the paper. I used antique paper.

Jon Wertheim: You did this? This is your handiwork.

Massimo De Caro: Yes, it all. I am very proud about this.

Jon Wertheim: You're very proud of this.

Massimo De Caro: Yes.

Jon Wertheim: If this book were original, what would this fetch on the market? What would someone pay for this?

Massimo De Caro: $300,000 at least

De Caro admits he sold two Columbus letters, which he says he bought legitimately from an anonymous collector. But he denies he ever made a fake Columbus letter. Why? For one thing, he says, it's too easy.

Jon Wertheim: You could've reproduced one of these Columbus letters.

Massimo De Caro: Oh if I try? I can, I'm sure I can create the best Columbus letter.

Massimo De Caro: If I create a Columbus letter, then we can show this Columbus letter to all the expert that you want and I'm sure I can bet that nobody recognize it is a fake.

Jon Wertheim: You think you can fool them?

Massimo De Caro: Yes.

Eight years into the joint U.S.-Italian investigation, no arrests have been made in the case, but three stolen Columbus letters have been recovered. No easy task, as they were sold in private sales to wealthy collectors, who, investigators say, weren't aware the letters had been stolen.

Jon Wertheim: How did you start tracking down the originals?

Mark Olexa: We relied heavily on Dr. Needham. He had a great roadmap of transactions and who was possessing and selling these Columbus letters throughout the world.

They were found in the most surprising places. The letter stolen from the Riccardiana Library in Florence turned up in, get this, the U.S. Library of Congress, alongside national treasures like the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

Jamie McCall: They were shocked. They were stunned. As you can imagine. The letter had been donated to the Library of Congress in 2004 by one of their major donors. As for the Vatican's stolen Columbus letter, it was traced to a wealthy Atlanta collector, who had bought it in 2004 for almost $1 million. Last year, Ambrogio Piazzoni, the vice prefect of the Vatican library, was on hand when it was returned to its rightful home.

7 New Netflix Shows in August 2020, and the Best Reasons to Watch – IndieWire

1. Hoops (available August 21)

Why Should I Watch? Between Big Mouth, F Is For Family, and The Midnight Gospel, Netflix has a strong slate of adult animated comedies, and thats without counting the services now ended but endlessly re-watchable episodes of BoJack. Hoops, starring and executive produced by Jake Johnson, looks to join those lofty ranks. Created by Ben Hoffman, Hoops follows Coach Ben Hopkins, a pathetic, angry, foul-mouthed high school basketball coach whos convinced he can make it to the big leagues if he can whip his wayward squad into shape. His father, Barry (voiced by Rob Riggle), is a former professional basketball star, and he wants to help his son succeed even though he knows hes a long way from being the man he should be. Hard-R hijinks ensue, with Chris Miller and Phil Lord (Clone High, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) also on board as executive producers.

Bonus Reason: If youre not familiar with creator Ben Hopkins, perhaps you know him by the stage name Wheeler Walker Jr., a (comedic) country singer whose first album, Redneck Shit, debuted on PornHub. Rolling Stone called that release unfathomably obscene and undeniably offensive for tracks like Cant Fuck You Off My Mind and Sit on My Face, and Walkers follow-ups only pushed the X-rated satire further. (Yup, thats another pull-quote from Rolling Stone.) Now, Hoffman is barely hiding behind another character via Coach Hopkins. Will the results be as extreme? Obscene? Offensive? Netflix has pushed those buttons to great success in other areas of late, so perhaps the strategy will help Hoops make a name for itself, too.

Nickelodeon

Why Should I Watch? If Netflix originals are doing a solid job with new adult animated offerings, than the streamers acquisition team is killing it in anime. After striking gold with Avatar the Last Airbender earlier this summer, Netflix invested in the sequel series to premiere this August. Created by Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino for Nickelodeon in 2012, The Legend of Korra follows the eponymous lead (voiced by Youre the Worst star Janet Varney) through four seasons (Books 1-4) of action, splendid (HD) visuals, and thoughtful commentary on real-world strife. Like Aang before her, Korra is an Avatar who can control the four elements: water, earth, fire, and air. Throughout the series, the hotheaded warrior has to maintain balance in a world facing political and spiritual unrest, though the final season sees her look inward in another imaginative pivot. Its quite a journey for anyone already caught up in the Avatar world

Bonus Reason: and great prep for Netflixs original adaptation. Back in 2018, the streaming giant announced plans for a live-action version of Avatar: The Last Airbender, hoping to do right by a beloved anime property that many felt was mishandled by M. Night Shyamalans 2010 movie. Theres still no word on a release date for the new series, but Netflix is certainly sparking renewed interest by releasing the original series and its sequel.

Why Should I Watch? Brandys beloved 90s sitcom, Moesha, is one of a handful of sitcoms focused on Black families that Netflix has licensed for release in the coming months. Originally planned for CBS before moving to its permanent home at UPN, the half-hour comedy centers on a well-off Black family living in the Leimert Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Moeshas diary entries open and close most episodes (shortly before Carrie Bradshaws essays would do the same on Sex and the City), which capture the titular leads days in high school, as well as her family life. Whether youre looking for a little nostalgia during your time at home or eager to finally see an oft-discussed comedy thats been previously unavailable otherwise, Moesha will give you 50-plus hours of much-needed entertainment.

Bonus Reason: Besides making a star out of Brandy, Moesha followed the grand tradition of most great sitcoms by tackling a number of difficult issues head-on. (The later seasons take on an infidelity arc thats a real humdinger.) So dont worry: This isnt a guilty pleasure or braindead bingeing; Moesha pushes the envelope, too.

Netflix

Why Should I Watch? Still looking for more animated offerings in August? Netflix has you covered with the third season of its kawaii counterculture cartoon, Aggretsuko. Originally the mascot for Sanrio, a Japanese company that designs, licenses, and specializes in super-cute products, Aggretsuko debuted as an anime musical-comedy in 2018, following an accountant named Retsuko who takes out her frustrations via death metal karaoke sessions. Episodes are pretty short about 15 minutes each but the length helps maximize the juxtaposition between crazy adorable creatures (Retsuko is a red panda) pursuing aggressively extreme outlets. (Retsuko eventually turns to marriage as solace from her office aggravations.) Try them out for yourself and see what all the much-deserved fuss is about.

Bonus Reason: One? Weve got five! For more hooks into Aggretsuko, check out our Season 1 breakdown. Heres a small taste: Retsukos name roughly translates to Rage-child in English, which is awesome by itself.

Why Should I Watch? A six-part documentary series from Shaul Schwarz and Christina Clusiau (Trophy), Immigration Nation examines Americas immigration process through the daily lives of ICE agents, activists, lawmakers, attorneys, and a sizable number of undocumented immigrants. Schwarz and Clusiau, who shot footage for more than three years, look at an array of immigrant stories, including longtime residents and more recent arrivals, and asks the hard questions about how our nation can live up to the words inscribed on the Statue of Liberty.

Bonus Reason: Early reviews have been strong. Varietys Chief TV Critic Caroline Framke writes Immigration Nation provides a damning indictment of the labyrinthe systems that make ICE so powerful, and a wrenching examination of the human cost its policies have wrought. Times Judy Berman also utilizes the striking descriptor when calling the docuseries as damning for the executive branch as it is illuminating for civilians. Heres hoping the timing of this release encourages voters to do what they can to change things.

Why Should I Watch? Another popular UPN entry, The Game originated as a spin-off of the sitcom Girlfriends (which starred Tracee Ellis Ross) before running one season longer than its predecessor. Mara Brock Akil created both, and recent Emmy nominee Tia Mowry leads The Game as Dr. Melanie Barnett-Davis who, when the series begins, has given up an offer to study at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine to support her husbands professional football career. Melanie quickly befriends her new football family, including Tasha (Wendy Raquel Robinson) and Kelly (Brittany Daniel), while she learns to juggle her responsibilities to her sport with her passion for practicing medicine. Honestly, the real answer to Why Should I Watch? is simply Tia Mowry (now Tia Mowry-Hardrict), but for those who wanted a few more names or a hint at the plot, there you go.

Bonus Reason: In addition to Mowry, The Game featured a slew of famous or soon-to-be famous faces. Moesha star Brandy showed up in later seasons, along with future Insecure star Jay Ellis. Rick Fox, Lee Majors, and Janet Varney were all part of the recurring cast, while guest stars like John Singleton, Jennifer Hudson, MoNique, Gabrielle Union, Serena Williams, Vivica A. Fox, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Jennifer Lopez kept audiences on their toes week in and week out.

Why Should I Watch? Whats cuter than animal-centered nature docs? How about an animal-centered nature doc focused on tiny animals? Exotic butterflies, everyday mice, weird-looking lizards, and more take the spotlight in this new Netflix docuseries that dramatizes little animals big adventures across the United States. Expect plenty of slo-motion shots and close calls for these Tiny Creatures, all in bright, beautiful high-definition.

Great white shark that pinged off Atlantic City, Ocean City leaves South Jersey – Press of Atlantic City

Where is Isaias now? Where is the forecasted path?

New Jersey remains in the forecast cone. Options from a graze up the coast to an inland track near the Delaware River are possible. Tropical storm warnings extend from Boston, down the I-95 corridor to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

As of 3 p.m., the National Weather Service Hazards for the Northeast. Tropical storm warnings are in dark red.

It is important to note that the heaviest rain will be to the west of Isaias' center. Meanwhile, the strongest winds will be to the east.

"Isaas" is the Spanish and Portuguese word for the biblical Isaiah. It is pronounced ees-ah-EE-ahs.

Isaias joins Tropical Storm Fay, which made landfall just south of Long Beach Island on July 10, as the two storms put the region in the forecast cone.

The cone represents a two-thirds probability of where the center of the low pressure center is.

The storm will slip through a weakness in a large high pressure system, which expands from the Gulf of Mexico into much of the Atlantic Ocean.

This map shows the steering patterns of the atmosphere between the 300 to 850 millibar level, between about 30,000 and 5,000 feet high. Isaias will slip through the weakness in the clockwise spinning high pressure system off the coast of Florida.

One it reaches Georgia, the steering patterns sharply moves west to east. While the storm won't curve immediately out to sea, there will be a turn to the northeast as it moves north, hence why New Jersey is in the forecast cone.

Forecast model guidance continues to narrow. A landfall will be possible, or can a pass two to three hundred miles out to sea.

The model track guidance for Tropical Storm Iasias, as of 8 a.m. Friday.

There are three options at play. However, it will not be until Saturday when they can be narrowed down. If the storm makes landfall before reaching New Jersey, that will weaken the storm, and vice versa. The first two scenarios are favored, with the third one looking less and less likely.

Option 1:

The European model from Wednesday night is a good representation of what scenario 1 would look like. The center of the storm is well out to sea.

Isaias stays 200 to 300 miles out to sea, passing between late Monday and Tuesday.

Spotty, but heavy, rain bands will pass. Winds would be gusty, but likely would not be enough to bring damage.

The real concerns would be out on the water. Given the full moon Monday and the onshore winds. Multiple rounds of minor or moderate coastal flooding would be likely. High seas would be present, with dangerous rip currents, too. During Tropical Storm Fay, a teenage lost his life in Ventnor while swimming with two friends the evening of the storm. In Ocean City, two 18-year-old girls were brought to shore by city police the following morning.

A heat wave that drives you to the shore, warm water temperature that draws you to the surf

Option 2:

The storm hugs the Jersey Shore. While the western side of the storm is usually the safer side, since the winds around the counter-clockwise spinning system goes against the northerly direction of the storm's movement, worse impacts than option 1 are possible.

Flooding rain, damaging winds at the coast, minor to moderate coastal flooding, dangerous rip currents and high seas will all be likely.

This being said, a track coast to the close would likely mean land interaction with North Carolina. If that happens, the storm would weaken. This could mean the difference between a strong tropical storm and weak, less organized one.

The Global Forecast System, American, model paints this picture. Though, note that the exact track of the storm should not be paid attention to. Rather, note how organized the storm is.

The GFS, American model, paints tropical storm force sustained winds at the shore Tuesday morning. Emergency personnel will not respond to a 9-1-1 call when winds are above tropical storm force.

Option 3:

Isaias makes landfall in Florida or the Southeastern United States and the center of the storm passes to the west of the state. That is illustrated on the western edge of the forecast cone.

The storm would likely be a remnants storm by then, or perhaps a Tropical Depression. However, flooding rains, some coastal flooding, dangerous seas, rip currents and high surf would be likely.

The Canadian weather forecast model from the Thursday night model run. Note the center of the storm is inland and would likely be a remnant storm, or a tropical depression by then.

Saturday.

By then, the storm will be near Florida. In the weakness of the large, Gulf of Mexico to Atlantic Ocean high pressure system, there will be a better idea on how the steering currents will move the storm.

Tropical Storm watches may go up Saturday night or Sunday morning, 48 hours before tropical storm force (39 mph or greater) winds arrive.

The Press of Atlantic City's Hurricane section of the Weather Center has the information you need to know to protect yourself and learn more about tropical systems in South Jersey.

Ten tropical storms and hurricanes have made landfall in South Jersey since 1900. Here's the list, newly updated with Tropical Storm Fay, which made landfall July 10. As long as the storm makes landfall in New Jersey, it will be the first time with two storms making landfall within the same year.

Making landfall on the Delaware Bay side of Cape May County on the morning of August 21, 1971, Doria was responsible for an F-2 tornado, with winds over 100 mph, near Cape May .

According to the Weather Prediction Center, 3 to 7 inches of rain fell in most of the region.

An active 2020 hurricane season was predictedby Colorado State University. With Isaias, 2020 continues its record breaking pace to hurricane season, beating out the historic 2005 year.

Breaking up is hard to do, but sometimes it needs to be done – The Japan Times

When I first came to Japan as a university English teacher in 1993, the hydrangea were in full bloom and I was 29 years old. Four years later, in 1997, I met my best friend here when we both started working for the same company at the exact same time. Both still relatively new to Japan, we bonded quickly over the strange customs, challenges and fathomless possibilities presented to us each day.

Since we both worked full time, we met every Sunday morning over coffee, often at a cafe where we chortled, gesticulated and expressed outright wonder as we struggled to understand Japan. We didnt care what others thought we were playful, untamed, carefree.

When I met her, I had just recentered my life by moving to Shiraishi Island in the Seto Inland Sea where I could satisfy a longing to live closer to nature: Where I could watch the tide whisper in under a full moon, taste the dew on the morning glories and swim in briny waters with swaying seagrass tickling my toes.

During that first year on the island, an abandoned kitten came upon me when I was running in the mountains. Imploring me to pick her up, she rested in my palm like a fragile, brilliant white goose egg. When I showed her to my best friend, she was smitten. It was just a normal cat, of course, but she told everyone it was the most elegant jewel in the whole world because it was mine. Thats just how she was.

My friend and I shared many of the same passions: the environment, sustainability and traditional Japanese culture, to name a few. She visited me often, and in our little island paradise we bathed in a sea of pink sunsets and danced in the shimmering summer air to appease the warrior spirits of the Battle of the Heike from 800 years ago.

When the autumn winds came, we wandered the ancient pilgrimage route while picking persimmons and memorized the Heart Sutra. In winter, her charm alone coaxed invitations into the warm island houses of Buddhist priests, shamans and folk dancers.

Time trudged on, I bought my island house and planted iris. She took on more work and stayed later each night at the company. We still met once a week, but eventually switched to Saturdays. When my parents came to visit me in Japan, they thought my friend was terrific, and returned home satisfied I was succeeding in this country with such wonderful support. It was true that she helped me get through the growing pains of this culture, just by being there.

When the internet moved life online, we did too, no longer meeting at a cafe for coffee. Instead, we caught up once a week as time permitted since meeting online gave us more freedom, less structure.

My friend was sophisticated, charming and more popular than I ever was, but she shared her vast cohort of admirers and many journeyed out to this remote, misty, plum-blossomed island in the Inland Sea she talked so much about. Some even became my life-long friends.

But as time rolls on, people mature and, inevitably, change. I married and her job made even more demands on her time. Japan was in a deep recession and she took a pay cut. We kept our chins up.

A decade later, my parents had passed away and hers separated after a long marriage. Her father took a new wife and things were never quite the same for her. So many adjustments to a new parent. I offered to help but was at a loss of what I could actually do for her. We occasionally took different views, had petty arguments, but tried not to allow a wedge to come between us.

About five years ago we had slipped to meeting just twice a month, on Mondays, and our relationship started showing real signs of weakness. We both knew something wasnt quite right, but we couldnt put our finger on it. We seldom cracked jokes anymore; in fact, we argued.

Still, she accompanied me to the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang in 2018 and we took four journeys together along the Kumano Kodo from 2014 to 2017.

Fast friends: Sometimes fate can bring just the right thing into your life. | AMY CHAVEZ

When I took a trip to Europe earlier this year with my husband, I sent her dispatches, just as I always had, starting with my first major solo trip on the Shikoku Pilgrimage in 1998, then again when I muddled through a stint in Hokkaido in 2007, and during two extended sailing voyages over the high seas in 2004 and 2012.

So when I came back from my European trip, it was a comfort to know she was still here waiting for me, the way she always had.

Last year in June, my precious jewel of a kitty passed away. For 22 years I had buried my nose in her fur when I was sad, and the pain of parting with my feline for good was so acute, I couldnt even share my loss with my best friend. I cradled the sweet old cat (mere bones!) and, amid a pouring spring rain, returned her to the mountain where she had first found me. For the rest of the rainy season, while the hydrangeas turned from green to pastel pink, pale blue and back to green again, I imagined the rain soaking down through the soil staining that beautiful white coat.

But I still had my best friend. We continued to meet once a month, and it felt somewhat stable.

Id been so dependent on her for so long. She mentored me through my 30s, 40s and now into my mid-50s. Because of her, I felt accepted and valued. It was a rare friendship and we knew it. Was it too late to renew that spark?

Then came COVID-19 and our worlds turned upside down. My friend could only meet me once every two months. When we did catch up, our viewpoints diverged, and we fell into spats. We made up though, before hopelessly quarreling again. The stress of diminishing finances among a world pandemic magnified our woes.

Where to go from here? I wondered, and it was not a new thought. Is such struggle normal? If I let her go, would I ever find another soulmate like her? In truth, I had started feeling estranged a long time ago, and I think she did too. Finally, I accepted that we had just grown apart.

Already, the cicadas are in full cry, but the last time I saw her was May 11.

Ive withheld her name until now because if you regularly read my column, you already know who she is. Ive written about her exactly 1,034 times, in essays that total 1 million words. Shes been in my life for 23 years and its so hard to let her go. But I know its time. She knows it, too. Farewell, Japan Lite.

A lot happens in 23 years but, in the end, time is itself an evanescence.

I have not regrets, but still I weep. And the Inland Sea tide rises.

Special thanks to the editors and staff at The Japan Times, and, of course, the readers for supporting me and Japan Lite for 23 years.

Video: Boxship Arrives in UAE With Toppled Containers – The Maritime Executive

UNI Florida - image from Uni-Asia Group

By The Maritime Executive 07-31-2020 04:25:25

Despite recent reports that suggested a decline in incidents of containers falling overboard, there apparently has been another incident this time approaching the Dubai port of Jebel Ali in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

While the full details of the situation are currently unknown, images have begun to appear of the 3,500 TEU container ship UNI Florida arriving in port with visible signs of container damage. The aft stack of boxes has toppled over leaning over the side of the ship. No reports have been released as of yet on the circumstances of the incident or the number or location of containers lost.

On a video shot by a local observer in the port, you can hear the surprise when they see the stack of boxes toppled over on the stern of the ship. Built in 2007 at the Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, it is apparently not the first instance that this vessel had a container accident in the same aft container bay. Pictures online dated 2007 show the same vessel with its boxes topped to starboard versus the current incident to the port side.

The vessel, the UNI Florida, however, was sold between these two incidents. She is currently owned by the Uni-Asia Group of Hong Kong working on time charters. AIS data indicates that the 43,000 DWT vessel remains in port at the UAE.

Recently, the World Shipping Council (WSC) issued a report saying that the incidents of containers lost overboard has been on the decline and is a small percentage of the total annual volume of containers transported at sea. The WCS concludes, based on data from the past 12 years, that half of all containers lost at sea are attributed to a limited number of major incidents that have occurred during those years. They reported that the number had declined to an average of 779 between 2017 and 2019.

Two and a half weeks ago, the MSC Palak reported that she had lost 22 containers overboard in high seas off the coast of South Africa in Algoa Bay. The South Africa Maritime Safety Authority responded to that incident briefly closingthe port over fears that the drifting containers were entering the shipping channel. The vessel was detained for a week in South Africa before it departed. SAMSA reports that MSC supported the clean-up efforts.

While many of the incidents similar to the UNI Florida often go unreported, others had drawn broad attention. In May, the APL England sailing east of Australia lost approximately 50 containers overboard in another heavy weather incident. The Australia authorities briefly detained the ship reporting that their inspectors had determined that the lashing arrangements for cargo were inadequate and found heavy corrosion on the securing points for containers on the ships deck. The clean-up from that incident is reported to still be ongoing while Australia has brought charges against the ships captain and is pursuing financial compensation from the ships owners.

The WCS admitted in its report that the goal should be both to improve incident reporting and seek to further reduce incidents such as these. They outlined a series of actions that were recommended to improve the safety of container ship operations.

The Galapagos islands face an invasion of trawlers – The Economist

A new treaty is the best hope of stopping it

ON JULY 16TH the Ecuadorian navy announced it had spotted a fleet of 260 fishing vessels, most of them Chinese, anchored in international waters near the Galapagos islands. Ecuadors government reacted as if it were facing some sort of invasion. It increased patrols to ensure that the ships would not venture into the Galapagos Exclusive Economic Zone, where Ecuador claims a sole right to resources. President Lenn Moreno formally complained to China.

Overfishing in high seas near the Galapagos is endangering the unique species that thrive there. Yet there is little Ecuador can do to stop foreign fleets from ransacking its stock of marine wildlife. No laws regulate fishing in international waters. The ships use bait to lure sharks out of Ecuadorian waters and then catch as many as they can.

It is impossible to track how much the ships fish. The Chinese under-report the international catch coming in through their ports, says Alex Hearn, of MigraMar, a marine-wildlife research organisation. But Ecuadorians got a glimpse in 2017, when one Chinese vessel was intercepted in the Galapagos Marine Reserve. The authorities found 300 tonnes of fish, most of it scalloped hammerhead shark, a critically endangered species. Two-thirds of hammerhead fins found in Hong Kong markets belong to species that depend on Galapagos waters.

China claims the vessels belong to independent companies it does not control. But there is no way Chinese ships would go all the way to fish around Ecuadorian waters without government subsidies and technical support, says Max Bello of Mission Blue, an NGO based in California. Chinas distant-water fishing fleet is the worlds largest but it is not the only country to have one. Taiwan, South Korea and America subsidise theirs, too. Global Fishing Watch, another American NGO, says much of the industry would collapse without subsidies.

Ecuador had played a big role in pushing countries to promise to negotiate a new UN treaty to regulate the fishing of endangered species. But its government took a back seat when the negotiations started, in deference to its own fishermen, who also trawl international waters. Thanks to the Chinese fleet, Ecuador is now eager to reassess its position, says Jeff LeBlanc, a government adviser. We now see there are more pros than cons. He hopes the new treaty will be signed next year, in time to save some threatened species. If not, fishing fleets will loot the waters near the Galapagos until there is little left.

The story behind the latest humongous ship to dock at Ocean Terminal in Edinburgh – Edinburgh Live

A huge new ship has appeared in Leith today, and has docked right in front of the Royal Yacht Britannia at Ocean Terminal.

The gigantic Caledonian Vanguard is a behemoth of a supply vessel. She was built 15 years ago and is currently sailing under the flag of the Cayman Islands: she is an impressive 93.45 metres long.

A platform supply vessel (PSV) is a ship specially designed to supply offshore oil and gas platforms. They move goods, tools, equipment and staff to and from the platforms: the Caledonian Vanguard travelled to Edinburgh from Aberdeen, a journey that took her 8 hours in total.

The ship is so big because she has to carry huge tanks for things like diesel fuel, water and chemicals that offshore oil platforms need to carry out their day-to-day functions. PSV's also carry chemical waste back to shore for proper recycling or disposal.

Platform Supply Vessels are also used to help reduce the extent of oil spillage in the high seas; some of these vessels are equipped with a firefighting capability and fire monitors for fighting potentially catastrophic platform fires.

Other vessels are equipped with tools, chemicals and personnel to help increase an oil well's production.

Often half of the crew are specialists such as scientists, geologists or other people involved in special jobs related to operations on the oil platforms.

Crews sign on to work and live aboard the platform supply vessels for an extended period of time, working in shifts.

Hopefully they'll be allowed onshore for a fun trip round the shops at Ocean Terminal today before they have to head back up to the North Sea oil fields.

31 July 2020 | Legal Affairs

The President of the Republic, Mr Danny Faure, attended a ceremony to mark the 10th anniversary of the Office of the Auditor General held this morning at the International Conference Centre Seychelles (ICCS).

In his opening address, the Auditor-General, Mr Gamini Herath, said that since a new Auditor General Act came into force in 2010, his office has made a significant milestone in the long history of Seychelles national audit service, which has existed in different forms under all systems of governments over the past 250 years.

In drafting the new law, we drew on the experiences of leading national audit service providers from across the world and we came up with the best practice at the time, said Mr Herath.

The Auditor-General thanked everyone locally and internationally for their support and gave a presentation which showed the positive impact the new law has had on the ranking of Seychelles National Audit Service within the international community. The ceremony was also highlighted by a report and photo exhibition to commemorate the day, and President Faure was given a visual tour of the work the Office of the Auditor General has done over the years.

Also present at the ceremony this morning was the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon Nicholas Prea, Minister for Finance, Trade, Investment and Economic Planning, Mr Maurice Loustau-Lalanne, the Attorney General, Mr Frank Ally, Chairman of the Human Rights Commission, Justice Bernardin Renaud, CEO of the Public Enterprise Monitoring Commission, Mr George Tirant, staff at the Office of the Auditor General, and other dignitaries.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Jonathan Brewer, a native of Sarasota, is playing a critical role in the U.S. Navys efforts to maintain a healthy and ready fighting force in the face of the Coronavirus pandemic.

As a hospital corpsman working at the Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Unit Groton, Connecticut, Brewers skills are vital to maintaining the health of the sailors in the New England area, and by extension, the readiness of the Navys operational ships and submarines on which they serve.

"The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Pandemic brought an invisible enemy to our shores and changed the way we operate as a Navy," said Adm. Mike Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations. "The fight against this virus is a tough one, but our sailors are tougher. We must harden our Navy by continuing to focus on the health and safety of our forces and our families. The health and safety of our sailors and their families is, and must continue to be, our number one priority."

As part of the Navy medicine team, Brewer protects sailors and their families, many of whom deploy around the world supporting national interests here at home.

"Were doing everything we can with extremely short notice and were making it happen," Brewer said. "Im glad to be a part of figuring all of this out and slowly getting back to a sense of normalcy."

Brewer is a 2008 Sarasota High School graduate. According to Brewer, the values required to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Sarasota.

"I grew up being very physically active and can relate that a healthy lifestyle is hugely important to our immune systems and survivability of potentially deadly diseases like COVID-19," Brewer said.
