Stratasys and SIA Engineering Company (SIAEC) have announced their joint venture organisation has received the AS9100D quality management certification for supply to the aerospace industry.

Now registered by International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG), Additive Flight Solutions (AFS) now complies with quality management standards applicable to the aviation, space and defence industry sectors.

AFS is the result of a collaboration between Stratasys and SIAEC struck in 2017 and combines the additive manufacturing expertise of the former with the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) know-how of the latter to deliver 3D printed parts to a number of customers in the aerospace and defence markets. These printed parts are primarily replacement parts for cabin interiors, such as sanitiser holders which were required recently by one local airline, with prototyping and tooling components also being delivered.

Though AFS has already been serving an extensive client base over the last three years, the company is now confident that the AS9100D certification will attract an increased number of manufacturers throughout the aviation, space and defence markets.

In the wake of Brexit, more exit signs are lighting up among European Union countries, with Italy's populists announcing the formal birth of the Italexit party.

Two days after meeting with Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage, Populist Italian Senator Gianluigi Paragone launched the Italexit party last Thursday, aiming at taking Italy out of the EU. The move came as the country is dealing with a migrant crisis, the coronavirus pandemic and growing economic hardship.

Professor Kemal Inat, a prominent academic from Sakarya University, pointed out the impact of the migrant crisis and growing discomfort from dominant countries like Germany on the rising Eurosceptic sentiments in Italy. "Eurosceptics in Italy think that the EU has not given sufficient support to Italy over the migrant crisis ... Leaving the EU would ease the pressure on (Italians)," Inat said.

In Europe, Italy was hit hardest by the pandemic. The country's massive production has collapsed during the pandemic as its gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to drop by about 11% this year. The countrys interior minister warned of possible social unrest this fall if businesses fail and lay off workers. While Italy was suffering from the pandemic, the EU was asked for an apology for not sufficiently helping the country at the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak. All of these factors have resulted in flagging faith in the EU project among Italians.

According to a survey by pollster SWG at the end of May, just 39% of Italians said they trusted the EU. Another survey conducted by Tecne in April showed that 42% of respondents said they would leave the EU; the number jumped from 26% in November 2018.

Italy has clashed with the EU over migrants stranded on boats in the Mediterranean. European countries have long been struggling to agree on how to deal with migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean. Italys government has threatened to cut funds for the EU unless other states take in boat migrants stranded in an Italian port. The country has also impeded nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and aid groups from operating rescue boats, either by refusing them entry to their ports or by impounding their vessels and placing their crews under investigation.

Inat also underscored the perception among Italians over losing their independence due to Germany's dominance in the bloc. Recalling the 2008-2009 economic crisis, Inat stated that countries like Italy need economic support from Germany as their economies have been negatively affected by the health crisis this year. Last week, Italy and the EU reached a deal to launch an economic recovery fund worth 750 billion euros ($881 billion). "Policies of countries like Germany and France would determine the future of Italy's role in the EU," Inat added.

EU's fragility

The first threat to the EU's long-time unity came with the possible withdrawal of Greece from the European single currency program following Greece's profound debt crisis. However, after three emergency bailouts and a debt-restructuring program, the Greek economy has continued to unravel and the threat of a "Grexit" is still on the agenda.

The second one was the Netherlands, one of the original founders of the EU, as the Dutch started to talk about a possible "Nexit" after the majority of people rejected an EU referendum on an association agreement between the EU and Ukraine on April 6, 2016. The vote was a heavy blow to the EU, as it showed growing disenchantment among the Dutch with the EU project. It also led the way in anti-EU sentiment, something that has become more visible in many EU countries. The leader of the far-right Dutch Freedom Party, Geert Wilders, described the result as "the beginning of the end of the EU."

Last but not least is the historical departure of the United Kingdom from the bloc. The U.K. left the EU on Jan. 31 after a slim majority voted for Brexit in a 2016 referendum, but financial firms have unfettered access to the bloc under transition arrangements that end on Dec. 31.

A new layer-by-layer fabrication process allows researchers to create new and improved soft robot actuators with variable degrees of stiffness.

Over the past decade, there has been a growing interest in developing soft robots that mimic nature to make them safer and more compliant with the physical world. Soft robots offer the promise of being able to interact more effectively with unknown objects and surroundings while operating with variable degrees of freedom.

However, soft robots inherent compliance often makes it difficult for them to exert forces on surrounding surfaces or withstand mechanical loading. To circumvent this problem, researchers are investigating and developing new technologies to control and tune the stiffness of soft robotics applications.

Nowadays, these technologies are widely implemented to enhance the grasping capabilities of soft actuators or to provide a physical feedback in wearable devices. Variable stiffness is also used in medical devices, such as micro-invasive catheters and rehabilitation devices, in order to lock the device into a certain shape to control changes in the degrees of freedom. However, the architecture and fabrication of stiffness tuning technologies are complicated, leading to time consuming processes and limited design flexibility and applicability.

In a recent article published in the journalAdvanced Intelligent Systems, researchers from the cole polytechnique fdrale de Lausanne (Switzerland), North Carolina State University (USA), and the University of Electro-Communications (Tokyo) describe a novel variable stiffness soft actuator an element to generate physical deformation that has a sandwich structure and is composed of three layers: a soft electrode, a dielectric layer, and variable stiffness electrode made of gallium.

A layer of the highly compliant electrode (carbon conductive grease) is applied to the elastomeric dielectric layer from one of the sides and does not constrain the polymers motion. The third layer is attached to the surface of the polymer layer from the other side. It represents a serpentine shape made of gallium, which is encapsulated in the acrylic membrane.

Gallium changes its phase between the solid and liquid state at low temperature, which is almost at the border of the human body temperature. Applying an electric potential across both electrodes (compliant grease form one side and the gallium serpentine shape from the other side) generates an attractive electrostatic force that causes the elastomer to shrink in thickness and expand in the area. In the current design, gallium is an electrode layer and can also change the actuators stiffness by heating the gallium metal traces. The use of a shared electrode for electrostatic actuation and, at the same time, stiffness change leverages the benefits of two technologies into a single device.

The simplicity of the layer-by-layer fabrication process is achieved by using a double-sided adhesive film that can easily bond to each other without additional pre-processing. An engraving mode of the laser cutter was used to fabricate traces for liquid gallium on the adhesive films surface. The novel device displays significantly greater stiffness change and actuation performance than other variable stiffness actuators with electrostatic actuation.

A co-fabricated electrode can be applied to different fields by providing a means to enable stiffness tuning capability most easily. In addition to grippers in robotics, such an electrode can find its application as a variable stiffness turbine blade in aerospace. Besides, this compact structure reveals new opportunities in haptics and wearable devices.

Chef Niven Patel Opens Mamey and Orno at Thesis Hotel Miami – Miami New Times

One of Food & Wine magazine's 2020 "Best New Chefs," Niven Patel, will bring two new restaurants to his Aya Hospitality lineup later this year.

The first of Niven's two restaurants will be Mamey, named for the tropical fruit native to Cuba and Central America, followed by a wood-fired cooking concept Orno in late-2020.Both will open inside the Thesis Hotel Miami in Coral Gables.

While he notes the move is a departure from his current establishments, Ghee and Erba, Patel said he is excited to align with a hotel group that shares his vision.

"The hotel's desire to create restaurants that reflect this approach was a factor in my decision to partner," Patel says. "This partnership promises great things."

Currently scheduled to open for dinner only seven nights a week beginning Tuesday, August 11, Mamey is described as a vibrant and island-minded concept with tapas-style plates. The concept is inspired by Patel's travels throughout Asia, Polynesia, Thailand, and the Caribbean.

Like each of his previous concepts, Patel said he wants to give the Mamey menu an authentic and organic touch. To do so, the chef says he will source a great deal of fruit, vegetables, and herbs from Rancho Patel, his two-acre farm in Homestead.Started in 2014, the farm currently supplies each restaurant with fresh produce from mangoes and eggplant to avocados and beets.

Patel's dedication to sustainability and mindful sourcing is what helps to define his eclectic cooking style, one that he says is deeply rooted in his heritage while also pulling inspiration from South Florida's agricultural bounty.

"The connection between the plants, the farm, the harvest, and the food on the plate is so important to me and the soul of everything we do at Ghee and Erba we will do at Mamey and Orno," Patel says.

Expect an eclectic array of cultures to be on display withMamey's menu, each showcasing the exotic flavors and spices commonly found in tropical cuisine. The menu begins with small plates like his yellowfin tuna tostones topped with a tomato sofrito, scallion, and piquillo pepper aioli; Bahamian-style conch fritters served with a cilantro tartar sauce and roasted peppers; and corn and callaloo empanadas.There are also sandwiches and large plates with everything from a Creole-inspired mahi to the crispy chicken sandwich dressed with plantain barbecuesauce, and Trini-style roti with curried chickpeas, spinach, red onion, and tamarind chutney ($8 to $36).

In collaboration with Bar Lab, Mamey's cocktail menu will feature flavorful concoctions that offer an island flair. Take the Mamey Swizzle, a blend of light rum, the chef's own chai tea blend, coconut milk, and mamey fruit. Another signature drink will be the Jerk Sandia, a mixture of Mezcal, watermelon, lemon balm, pomegranate, and jerk spices.

Sometimes, things change in a minute.

You look, and its one way. You look again, its different, and you didnt even see the change happening. You might not like it but that never matters. As in the new picture book The Shared Room by Kao Kalia Yang, illustrations by Xee Reiter, thats when its best just to take a deep breath, roll your shoulders, and move on.

If it were any other winter day in Minnesota, it mightve been nice. It was warm enough for the snow to melt and you could almost see that spring was coming. But inside the house in east St. Paul, there were shadows acros

s a dark fireplace and quiet floors. There was light in the house, but no sunshine.

Pictures hung on the wall but it was hard to look at them because they reminded the family inside the house that one of them was missing. It had been seven months since the girl with the shiny brown hair and big toothy smile, the happy little girl in a framed picture, had walked into a lake, misstepped, and accidentally drowned.

Nobody had seen it happen and nobody in the family could forget. The mother and the father couldnt even bear to take the sheets off the girls bed and for seven months, they visited her room and cried once, twice, three times a day. The house was quiet, except when someone would play a video of the girl on their phone, and everyone watched.

But then, something shifted.

Ever since the youngest brother was born, the oldest brother shared a bedroom with him in the house in east St. Paul. There were four bedrooms, four children and two parents, so there had to be sharing until the parents asked the oldest brother if hed like to have his sisters room. Hed have her bed. He would have her dresser and her closet.

But he would never have her back. Would he miss his sister forever?

Is The Shared Room a book for children?

You may wonder that after youve read it through once and you should, to gauge its appropriateness for your child before you present it. Its a lovely story, but its also deeply, unbearably sad.

While the artwork by Xee Reiter may soften things a bit, author Kao Kalia Yangs tale starts with silence and ends like a grey tattered shawl draped over every page. This profound mourning leaves a heaviness over the story that stays well beyond the final page, and youll feel it in your chest.

And yet, if you can withstand the pall, theres a sliver of hope inside this book and a reminder that life goes on. It also serves to tell a child that its best to come to terms with death but that never forgetting is okay, too.

Weldon Ryan is playing out his story, making strides in cyberspace despite the coronavirus attack.

The artist, a former Flagler County Art League president, joined artisans through Robert Shirk showcasing Men Painting Women Art Exhibit.

Your eyes will focus on stellar female forms, depicted differently by artists Wilson Romero, Leonardo Montoya Perez, Weldon Ryan, Herbie Martin, and Robert Shirk.

Thats happening through Aug. 21, Mondays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the downtown Orlando Public Library, 101 East Central Blvd., Orlando.

Recently, Ryan rid himself of his studio to work on line from home.

Ive also been working to get my social media with my YouTube channel going for people who enjoy my work, said Trinidad-born Ryan, who mostly grew up in the Bronx.

Ryans popularity has grown since graduating from the High School of Art and Design in 1981 and attending the State University of New York at New Paltz. He later received an associate degree in general illustration from the Fashion Institute of Technology.

He freelanced before landing an Urban Park Rangers job in 1987, painting murals for the New York City Parks Department at Pelham Bay Environmental Nature Center, and afterwards joining the New York City Police Department (NYPD).

Ryans sketches were the poster child for rounding up crooks after his assignment to the NYPD Forensic Artist Unit.

Doing the forensic work and the sketches of perpetrators of crime as you sit there, and speak with individuals, who have suffered a loss, you actually form a bond, and you feel their pain and emotions, he said.

His wife, Richlin, an art director and graphic artist, is the mother of the duos two children. Theyve changed their status arriving in Palm Coast in 2004.

Theres not any art related to carnival, except for mine as far as I know depicting the Caribbean side of things, and the way I do it, my realism, he stressed. Although his artwork is realistically illustrative, he allows for a bit of serendipity, reads his vitae.
